Revis Watch: Why August 10th Might Be Meaningless

by Bassett on August 9th, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Darrelle Revis

Once Revis didn’t show in Cortland, the next date that began floating around was August 10 or 11 (no one seems sure) as the drop-dead date for Mr. Revis to accrue a year of service — should he show up after that point.  My trenchant counterpoint to being compelled to show up?  Um, he’s Darrelle Freaking Revis.

Okay, okay … while that’s a rather oversimplified cap analysis (par for the course with me) our man Jason at nyjetscap.com (who we trust with our life in any Jets salary cap emergency) wrote up an insightful analysis that explains the issue in a little more detail and why accruing a year might not matter.

Capologize me, Jason.

… a new set of rules are in place in 2010 because 2010 is an uncapped season. In an uncapped year the required time for unrestricted free agency jumps from four years of service to six years of service. All signs at this point in the labor negotiations basically point to both sides playing the year out without a new CBA in place and then seeing who blinks first in March. Here is why this affects Revis and makes the August 10th date likely meaningless. It also adds a new dimension to his holdout from the team.

Jason then goes on to explain that, basically, a new labor deal won’t be worked out until March at the earliest, with the 2011 NFL Draft the fallback.  So why does this matter to the Revis negotiations?

And all of this leaves a superstar cornerback in limbo. When Revis voids his contract in February all signs point to the fact that he is going to be a restricted free agent whether he sits out all of training camp or all of the NFL football season. Three years or four years of service makes no difference in a year where you need six seasons to become an unrestricted free agent. This also sheds new light on a potential reason why Revis is holding out right now and willing to give up 20 million guaranteed by doing so. Revis was likely not playing in 2010 for 20 million dollars. He was likely playing for a 3 million dollar or so qualifying offer from the Jets in 2011 and a 9 million dollar franchise tag in 2012. Sure he could hope the Jets would exercise the buyback , but that would be putting faith in an organization and there is almost no trust [in a league-wide sense] between the players and teams right now.

So as you see, accruing a year of service really might not matter.  Now this doesn’t mean that if he doesn’t show up in the next day or two, that he won’t play in 2010, but Revis might think that the RFA gambit might be his best bet to force the team to ante up at the risk of getting himself into the semi-open RFA market.  While I don’t know the exact nature of the RFA tender rules in uncapped years, it’s at least worth wondering aloud if RFA “Poison Pills” could make a comeback, even if they are in spirit frowned upon around the league — especially when it comes to a player like Revis.

So if the Jets were to RFA and then have him signed away due to a poison pill loophole?  It would mean just a 1st & 3rd round pick.  Too scant a compensation I’d imagine for many fans.

I am no longer on Revis’ side. No longer buying his jersey. Mangold and Harris are real men.

  2. avatar GANGGREEN says:

A first and third round draft pick for Revis would still not fill his void.Other teams fear him and dont even bother throwing in his direction.Losing Revis would be one of the worse mistakes The Jets Organization could make and on the flop side where are you going to replace his talent/reputation AKA”Revis Island” Revis is a must sign player and anything else would be the most idiotic choice this front office can make…ANTE up WOODY and pay the man his just dues…

    • avatar zep says:

1st and 3rd not enough but to say this would be the stupidest move on the jets, no.

he almost deserves to be cut the man held out for this very contract, two holdouts in three years?? FOR A SIX YEAR DEAL!!?? WHAT!?

pay the man, not 16 million dollars that’s utterly ridiculous i would take some great picks for this guy in a second.

i want jets not money babies as i’m sure a lot of fans do. not happy with the way revis and the jets have made this situation but if its revis who isn’t budging than shame on him, he deserves no more than 12-13mil per year..what does the second highest payed corner make 10? 11? or else he can go play for a s*** team because we have something to play for its not the new york revis’

  3. avatar trizzle says:

Revis is so selfish we have a win now team and he’s trying to ruin our season threatening to sit out the whole season, i used to love revis but now im starting to hate him

  4. avatar Ray says:

The part of that story the hit me the hardest was the comment “WHEN Revis voids his contract in february”. Does he have some kind of clause in this contract that lets him out? This is the first I have heard that he isn’t signed for three more years.

    • avatar Bent says:

The void is coupled with a two year buyback option for the Jets, so he basically is under contract for 3 years unless they choose not to do that.

  5. avatar Brad says:

    Trizzle,

I’m sure Revis (and his people) are saying the same thing about Woody/Tanny.

Revis has always been spoken of highly by everyone. Since we don’t know what has been offered, we can’t really tell who is being fair and who isn’t.

  6. avatar GANGGREEN says:

WHOA you guys are killing me…Revis is the best corner in the league and your telling me we can pay the man a salary he deserves…The front office shells out what 11 or 12 million for Brett Favre for a 1 year deal and thats ok but Revis who is the foundation for our team to be able to blitz and cut the field in half because no one is going to throw to his side is not worth it…I’m not a fan of shelling out huge money on contracts or long term deals but If I was Mike T. this is a player they need to lock up for a long time because he body of work proves his is worth the money…And dont be trying to call Revis greedy and all that crap…Pay the man what he is worth and all will be good again…I have no hard feeling for what Revis is doing and neither should any of you…The Jets front office needs to put the money where in belongs in the long term well being of this team…Revis is loved and respected by all=coaches, players, and media..Revis is another Curtis Martin in the making a player of high respect, contributes high quality play all the time,is not arrogant or loose with his mouth in the media, and a damn great CB…I say it again PAY THE MAN HIS JUST DUES he is worth every penny and then some…

    • avatar zep says:

his body of work proves he is worth the money?? he had one break out year last year that doesn’t qualify him for peyton manning money who has a much larger influence on the game any way you shake it has. i still wouldn’t put him above asomgua maybe he had a better year than him last year but the guy from the raiders has done it for much longer than revis has.

and by the way curtis martin would never hold out of the same contract twice in three years.

    • avatar Jeff says:

Um, my friend this is not Major League Baseball. One of the best things in the NFL is the salary cap, and what makes almost all teams competitive in that they have the same amount of “cap space” to spend on players.

If we didn’t have a cap, Mike T would gladly give him a contract. However, we only have soo much cap space to spend on our homegrown talent. When we have guys like D Harris and Mangold in the line for top market deals along with the other 50 players in the roster.

I don’t know what the number is on the deal or the money offered. However if Revis is looking to get his .50 cent raise over Nmandi then he must be smoking whatever Al Davis is smoking. There is no way a corner is worth 16 million a season. Not even 13! Heck when the top receivers in the game make around 10 million and top corner before Nmandi!

Sure its easy to say “Pay the Man”, but unless you are playing fantasy baseball with the NY Yankees its not that easy

    • avatar iJets says:

Completely agree with Revis deserving to get Top Notch money and holding out.

      He’s best Corner in biz.

  7. avatar Dante says:

If you’re the Jets, why would you not excercise the buy-back? It’s essentially an insurance plan against Revis being signed away on a poison pill. Coupled with the fact that this insurance plan has a cost of $2 Million in 2011, and $6 Million in 2012 (Both values representing the cost of the buy-back over the applicable tenders), and it seems a no brainer from a value perspective.

Lost in all of this, also is the fact that in 2012 (2011 if the option on the third year is not picked up), Aso’s contract is no longer in play, and to be the “highest-paid” CB in the league would only require about $10 Million a year (This number is subject, as always, to the whims of Al Davis).

In the end it really seems that the Jets bear little cost for controlling Revis, and the timeline for $15.2 Million being the bar he needs to be paid over is also dwindling.

  8. avatar gmist26 says:

trade em to oakland for aso!!

  9. I’ve had enough of Revis. Get to camp. This is a business? Well show up to work. He’s made $15 million, and if the worst case scenario comes to bear as Bassett mentioned he’d “only” make another $13 million. I have zero sympathy for him. He signed his deal. This is not Leon Washington, a fourth-round pick who exceeded expectations. If he’s willing to screw over the fans and his teammates this year for their shot at a super bowl by missing regular season games, whatever, trade him.

  10. avatar tyrone says:

    gang green sounds like revis

  11. Revis Is The Best Corner Easily, Revis Is A BIG Part In The Reason Why We Have The Number 1 Defense But If we give him the contract he wants not only would we lose valuable players on defense we lose valuable players on offense AND our Bread And Butter Our O-LINE!!!
Its NOT worth it Revis deserves to be paid like the best corner too bad the contract he wants to get paid more than is ridiculous in itself.
Its becoming clear to me Revis will have to get traded..
    TRADE HIM FOR ASO!

  12. avatar tyrone says:

revis island move over for ALCATRAZ i guess cromartie will be smart and get the attention and endoresments .holmes mvp super bowl 1mill no contract in camp /cromartie 1m no contract in camp/harris 55000good lb no contract in camp/mangold 3mill no contract in camp revis15 mil contract 21 left crying at home like a girl .cause he wants to make more then everybody .out of camp.those other guys could also get hurt. whats your excuse.! oh yes you need more food!

  13. avatar Ed L says:

read that link from fanhouse about how the jets are blaming al davis and how the jets should be catching more flack for giving d’brick his deal…ya gotta wonder where they find these people to write these articles….i mean aol is a joke to begin with but still someone has to edit these things

  14. avatar Ed L says:

and not for nothing it is all al davis’ fault…and i guarantee every owner/gm would tell you the same thing behind closed doors

  15. avatar JesusRevis says:

The Jets organization is going to look pathetic if they screw this up. For all of you who are criticizing Revis, you need to understand that nothing is guaranteed in this league and anyone who doesnt try and get as much money as they can, while they can, is a moron. Revis the Jets best player, he might even be the best non QB in the NFL, the Jets need to FIND A WAY to make him happy. This is casting a dark cloud on what should have been a fun exciting off season. If the Jets front office finds a way to lose Revis, they will be viewed as an absolute joke.

    • Why would the Jets look bad its Revis’s Fault.

    • avatar zep says:

your absolutely right lets sign him for 16 million. not sign harris and mangold, then in the future when sanchez contract is up he will argue that he is more important than revis….which is true a qb has a much bigger impact on a game, duh. and then we have 35 mil a year to two players how well of a team do you think we would have around them? its ridiculous signing him to 16 mil that’s like an eighth of the salary to him.

  16. I’d prefer to just resign him at a reasonable cost, but if we have to, send Revis to Arizona so he can be with his primadonna pal. Revis and Ellis for Rodgers-Cromartie and Dockett.

  17. We are a COMPLETELY different team with Revis on the field and he gives Rex so much flexibility on defensive schemes. However, he is not worth a contract that won’t allow us to sign Davis Harris, Nick Mangold, Holmes/Edwards, and Cromartie after the season. I’m a HUGE fan of Revis, he’s my favorite player along with Harris but we just can’t give him a contract that will not allow us to sign any of our other core guys. This is getting ridiculous and if Revis is not on the field by week 1, I will lose SO much respect for him. BTW GANGGREEN, Curtis Martin would NEVER do something like this so please don’t compare Curtis to Revis right now.

  18. avatar JayM says:

    TheJetsStream

BREAKING: Revis’ agent met with Tannenbaum in Roscoe, NY on Friday. Presented Jets with offer. Awaiting response.

  19. avatar Ed L says:

enough with the nothing is guaranteed b/s get insurance…everyday people who have jobs carry risk of getting disabled and not making salary…i am sure revis’ bank accounts are very full and he should be able to take out a few nice policies against injuries…i believe brick did it…

but regardless his agent/mgmt are fools because he could be the star of hard knocks and basically rake in the dough on all the promo/marketing deals he would get…he is missing out on the chance of a lifetime to have fans across the nation..because the whole country will see hard knocks

    • avatar bilal says:

yea but this everyday person is not an NFL athlete. the comparison may draw a sympathetic vote but to me- I know millions of people arent glued to the TV watching how I perform at my job.

Hes already done a few endorsements so I’m not sure how much this is hurting him. You know hard knocks can still follow Revis. They followed the bengals first round pick last year when he didnt sign and they also followed LJ the year before when he was holding out.

      • avatar Ed L says:

the implications of making say 12 mil a year to 15 mil a year is not much if your not an idiot and dont blow it all in a month…

he can pretty do what ever he pleases on that salary and if he did ever get hurt thats just the nature of his business…and he will have plenty of guarantees built in to take care of him for the rest of his life….

these million dollar figures get thrown around like they are nothing… i for one dont feel bad for revis…. i am sure the jets are making him the highest paid cb in the league OTHER THEN ASO and thats what he deserves…and if the jets arent then shame on the jets

  20. avatar Ed L says:

and that is from a pure business standpoint…

  21. avatar tyrone says:

right now cromartie is our best player .cause revis is at home not on the feild .how could you be the best player when your not playing !last year is over.its about this year, theirs a lot or 1 year stars in sports. get to work the jets and fans paid you up front money finish your contract or sit home with gil who sucked after he got his contract.

  22. avatar JayM says:

    MarkCannizzaro

Revis agents and mike t met fri and gave the gm a written proposal to be given to woody johnson

  23. avatar JayM says:

I think Klecko said it best last night on Jets Nation. Revis held out to get this contract. Now he is holding out again, he can’t get it his way all the time and he needs to compromise, and get back into camp.

  24. avatar Bent says:

    Re: Poison Pill.

If the CBA is signed during that gap between void and exercise, the Jets might be able to know for certain that it’s an option.

RFAing him is kind of an aggressive move and may be more valuable as something they could threaten him with to try and persuade him to sign.

  25. avatar Bent says:

I’m sure the dealine is “before August 11th”, so he’d have to show by sometime tomorrow. No idea if it’s midnight, 4pm, 5:30pm or anything else, but I bet one of the beat writers will tweet it and then the rest of them will.

I don’t expect him to return without a deal, so the urgency of this deadline is overstated anyway.

    • As Jason alludes, the entire Aug. 10 deadline issue is moot.

      • avatar Bent says:

I’ve always felt it was moot anyway. The threat of future money reducing is of no concern to Revis. If the uncapped rules are still in place when he voids his deal and that isn’t retroactively corrected by the new CBA and that makes the accrued year thing irrelevant anyway, then that removes the importance of that date, but I don’t think he’s concerned with his current contract, just his next one. I still don’t expect the Jets to RFA him because potentially exposing him to a rival is too risky.

        • Bent,

When I grow up, I want to be you (that’s a compliment, not a jibe!).

Your faith in human nature and the business ethics of the corporate animal are uplifting to my soul.

That’s been kicked out of me many decades ago. I am always more surprised when they make the ethical move then the unethical one.

          • avatar Bent says:

Everything I’ve learned over the last few years writing for TJB has me trusting the team and not trusting the agent in this situation.

Also, you can’t trust what you read in the media.

Ultimately, I’m not taking sides though, I’m remaining open-minded.

          • avatar billvv says:

The contract is the document of record. Everything else is dust in the wind….

  26. Great article by Jason. Thanks to Brian to sending it our way.

But it only serves to solidify my points.

Revis is not returning until this is settled, period, even if it’s for the year or longer. The Jets are on their own as far as trying to get a SB ring this year. Rot’sa ruck, guys! Again, Revis is the most competitive SOB in the NFL. The front office could have rolled over a bunch of guys but picked the wrong guy to try to screw over.

This is now all about Woody. Since the owners are responsible for all this mess, all Woody has to do is break with the owners and do what’s best for the NY Jets and the NY Jets fanbase. Does Woody have the cojones to go counter to his fellow owners like that, or not?

  27. Question for Jason/Bent:

Thoughts on the impact that the Great NFL Lockout of 2011 will have on FA accrual?

A case can be made for not accruing time in a players’ strike. But an owners’ lockout is not of a player’s choosing, and he should not be victimized out of accrual time. I think that would be the NFLPA position — which makes perfect sense to me.

Should we assume that’s another issue heading for Federal court?

    • avatar Bent says:

I can’t see anyone getting credit for an accrued year when there is no season, but they might reduce the time to unrestricted free agency by a year in the first year of the new CBA.

      • Oooh, then we’re in for a much longer lockout than we expected.

You’ve stated the owners’ position above. They’ll say, No season, no work, no play, no pay, no accrual. That’s safe to say, I think.

The earth would fall off its axis if the players EVER go along with that. Short-circuiting FA accrual time is, I foresee, an ultimate dealbreaker for the players side, assuming all other issues were to be resolved.

If I were dealing with this, and my boss kept me in the street, it’d be bad enough he wouldn’t pay me. If he then tried to screw with my seniority process due to his tantrum, yes, I’d sue his hide off. As I assume the NFLPA would do here.

  28. avatar Violent_D says:

We should trade him to the raiders so he can understand why nnamdi makes 16mil per year cause he plays for the worst team in the NFL. and hes compensated for it.

  29. Revis is 100% right. He deserves his money, i cant name u one wide out that had over 60 yards last season, let alone giving up a td on him. With most of the jets getting a little old this year is 1000% their best chance of winning a superbowl. The contract that revis proposed to the jets would make him so rich, and a jet for life, those are two things i would love to see. Letting revis go would be the biggest mistake in jets history, and the sooner they realize that the better.

    • avatar billvv says:

Contracts are not written to pay for ‘deserving.’ They pay specified amounts each year as agreed upon in advance by both parties. It is a red herring to make a plea for more money because it is deserved.

Secondly, there is no thought of letting Revis go. He will remain under contract. He is just refusing to play under the contract.

My guess is that the defensive scheme will require more pressure on the QB than last year when they just needed to hurry the QB. No worse than that. I will not panic over the loss of Revis given the other additions to the team. They more than make up for his absence.

  30. avatar GANGGREEN says:

I know the Jets should let Revis sit all year, miss the superbowl, and then let a team like Miami or New England who have cap money pick him up a year from now so we can play him in our division twice a year…Gimme a break..I know you can give in to every players demand when they ask for more money and that Revis should honor his current contract BUT and this is a big BUT is he worth losing getting signed because we are going to play hard ball with the best corner in the league..I dont think so…Revis stated earlier in the off season that he wasn’t even asking for 12 mil or to be paid like ASO so I dont think the contract is anywhere near what people are speculating…Does anyone think without Revis on this team this season that we make the Superbowl…I’m not to sure about that one!!! All i’m saying is both sides meet in the middle and get this contract done for the better of the whole team!!!!!

  31. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

First of all the JETS will exercise the buyout in his contract which will pay him $10 million in 2011 and 2012. If he sits out this year, which is really stupid on his part, his $1 million contract will be in force for next year. I think this is contract law. And how could he be so stupid to turn down $100 million 6 year extension??

Burn your Revis jerseys as he is stupid and his agents are even more stupid.

The Jets should trade a pick for a good CB to strengthen secondary and call revis’s bluff.

    • avatar Bent says:

“…the JETS will exercise the buyout in his contract which will pay him $10 million in 2011 and 2012″

You need to stop reading the Post. They keep reporting this, but the truth is that it will pay him 5m in 2011 and 11m in 2012 (plus 2m if he makes the Pro Bowl this year – which won’t happen if he sits out the season – and 2m if he makes the Pro Bowl next year – which won’t happen if there’s no season).

“If he sits out this year, which is really stupid on his part, his $1 million contract will be in force for next year. I think this is contract law.”

No, that’s incorrect. He won’t receive a salary if he isn’t on the active roster, but his contract will remain unchanged and the buyback will still apply after the 2010 season.

  32. avatar billvv says:

His refusal to play does not void his contract. It voids certain provisions of his contract.

    • avatar Bent says:

Something else that just occurred to me, if he was to refuse to play for the Jets again, he’d probably have to give back half of his signing bonus money.
