Turner Throws Punch, Gholston Makes Splash
CORTLAND–Desperately trying to keep one practice from blurring into the next. Fortunately, there was another fight this morning. At the center was Rob Turner. The guy just loves to fight. Before the fracas was over, his helmet had come off.
However, after practice Kris Jenkins made the point that Turner may be on edge as he tries to show the team what he’s got. Turner was removed from the competition for left guard as soon as Vlad Ducasse was drafted. While Turner does a lot of things for this team, and Rex Ryan said today that Turner could probably be a starter for a lot of other teams, it has to be incredibly frustrating for him to know that he has no shot at a starting role.
Vernon Gholston was the player of the day as far as Ryan was concerned.
“The best day he’s had since I’ve been here,” Ryan said. “It started when we were in a 5-4 dril. He came off and stood up Wayne Hunter. I told him, now you have to get off the block. Then he threw Rob Turner on the ground and I thought ‘all right, my man’s here.’ Whatever he had for breakfast he needs to eat every day.”
As for the competition between Ducasse and Matt Slauson, Ducasse ran a penalty lap today. It wasn’t his first. (This is one of the very few things that offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer seems to have held over from the Eric Mangini days.) He’s working hard but it’s a huge transition for him and, from what I understand, the language barrier — French is his first language — might be slowing things down a little bit more as well.
Kyle Wilson is looking great — way ahead of where you’d normally expect a rookie to be. Ryan even made the odd comment that Dwight Lowery went to DB coach Dennis Thurman and told Thurman that Wilson should start. This is a bit of a head-scratcher since theoretically, until Darrelle Revis gets back, Lowery should be the starter. There won’t be any way to follow up on this with Lowery until tomorrow, but as you can imagine, we’re all going to try.
Kellen Clemens worked with the second unit as Mark Brunell was given the day off from quarterbacking. Kind of like what Herm Edwards used to call “Senior Citizen Day.”
Brunell did step in to hold on field goals, something he did for New Orleans last year. Before that, he said he hadn’t held since high school. So far Brunell is a roll-with-it kind of guy. As he said about holding, “It’s a way to get on the field.”
As for Revis, no news, although Ryan said today that, “If he comes walking through the door, somebody will kiss him on the lips probably.”
David Clowney was back at practice today but, in spite of numerous requests to speak with him, he was hustled off the field immediately after signing autographs for fans following practice. We were told he had to go lift. So, no reason yet for why he missed two days of practice.
A few new injuries. Jason Taylor went out with a slight groin pull and Braylon Edwards had limited reps due to a sore knee. Joe McKnight was given fluids and went back in. Jeff Cumberland is still out with a concussion, Marlon Davis is still out with a knee. Brashton Satele is expected back at practice this afternoon, after recovering from his lower leg/ankle thing.
Humorous moment of the day (other than the fight): Kris Jenkins goes down like a cartoon character. I’ll let him describe the scene, “The little guy from Michigan? Donovan…Warren? He ran right up under me. He clipped me. I was trying to do a swim move on Nick (Mangold) … I see [Warren] rolling out of my way. Nick is laughing. My wife said it wasn’t the most attractive play.”
Fun sighting of the day: Woody Johnson and Mike Tannenbaum bicycling to practice together this morning.

It’s great to hear that Vernon Gholston is performing in camp but until I see him in live game action I won’t believe it. Vernon has showed me nothing since he’s been here besides destroying Davis Carr in the the pre-season game vs the Giants last year. Believe me I really hope he comes thru this season but I don’t see it.

Don’t forget DE is his natural position since he played it in college. I agree the true test will come during games but this is certainly encouraging news especially for a guy who has been labeled a bust for the past three years now.

yes but is his natural position DE in the 3-4?
-
Geez I know hes been bad but its only been two years! lol
He played plenty of DE during the first half of the season last year- dont wanna hear those excuses
-
He was definitely playing OLB Mostly.

Wake me up when he gets a sack in a real game.
Also, Mr. Taylor is too old to stay healthy.

I think Bent and I are the charter members of the Rob Turner fan club. I still don’t know why he wasn’t in the mix for LG. Buttle compared Slauson to Dan Alexander…high praise in my book. Maybe Turner is destined to be then next Guy Bingham or Ted Banker…a very good sub at multiple OL positions that never gets the starting nod, unless there’s an injury.

You know its funny, i use to get a kick out of when turner would come into the game as an eligible reciever a couple years ago when no one really knew about him… I’ve always liked him, half-jokingly at first but he sounds like hes really rounding into shape.
and i would love to join the fan club, start one on facebook!!!!!!

If Lowery did say that, I agree with him. Wilson should be the backup CB for this team (and the starter until Revis comes back), as Lowery just doesn’t seem to fit there. However, Lowery should probably be ahead of him in the nickel.

Rob Turner is a badass in my book – I think they will find room to fit him in

” also ask Jenks thoughts on LG battle. Said he thought that slauson was running away with it, but believes Vlad’s cathin’ up now”
