Woody Johnson Not Optimistic About Revis Situation

by Lisa Zimmerman on August 9th, 2010 at 5:32 pm

CORTLAND–Woody Johnson spoke to the media after today’s afternoon practice to address the situation with Darrelle Revis. Johnson, who was filled in on the three-hour meeting that GM Mike Tannenbaum had with Revis’ agents on Friday, was asked if he was still optimistic about getting a deal done before the season starts. His response was a simple and emphatic, “No.”

Tannenbaum added, “My impression is no progress. Nothing new and different.”

The bottom line, “Fundamentally there really hasn’t been a change,” Tannenbaum said. “We still have fundamental differences of opinion on what the appropriate compensation should be. When there’s an appropriate deal to be made, I have no idea.”

An added element of this saga is that any player who has not reported to training camp by midnight tomorrow (August 10th) will lose an entire accrued season, regardless if he plays after that. This could ultimately affect Revis’ free agent status down the line.

good bye revis is was nice knowing you for 3 years hopefully we can move on and sign our other draft picks.

  2. Ok let get in the mindset that this kid doesn’t play for the Jets this year, and lets face it may never again

Thank got the offense is looking an improved unit, cos there going to be a drop-off on defense

  3. avatar Bob Vila says:

Oh give me a break madbacker. The guy is gonna get signed, which makes this whole charade even more frustrating.

Rex n’ Co need to cut out the bluster than the defense will be fine without Revis, you simply can’t execute the schemes we used last year without him.

So man up, pay the guy his money and be done with it. We have championships to win, worry about restructuring next offseason.

  4. avatar Wolf says:

Can we let him rot under contract for next three years, Bent?

If he doesn’t play for us, he doesn’t play. In not worried about compensation, the Jets should boy even be thinking about a trade.

  5. avatar endzoneview says:

I’m not going to panic until the third pre-season game if he hasn’t signed.

Worst case: he sits out and instead of being a super dominate defense with Kyle Wilson as our nickel, we stay overall just as good as last year with Wilson starting opposite Cro and Lowery as the nickelback. I could live with that.

  6. avatar Led says:

They’re playing poker. Anything either side says to the media right now should be taken with a grain of salt.

  7. ubelievable! I will be livid at everyone if this guy is not playing against the Ravens week 1! Livid at Darrelle Revis, livid at the FO, and livid that this season may very well be a disaster! This team cannot win a championship without Darrelle locking up half the field, allowing Rex to annihalate the QB. Without Revis we don’t have the safety net of knowing the number 1 Receiver is locked up which let’s us get to the QB. I think we can make the playoffs without Revis, but no Super Bowl I’m sorry. This season has the makings of a failure! I love Cromartie I think he’s gonna have a pro-bowl type season and will be here to stay after this year. I think KW will be very good one day. However, Revis is the best defensive player in the league and allows Rex to do things with this defense that some defensive coordinators/head coaches can only dream of. I’m still optimistic that this team will be real good, but Revis needs to play if we want a Super Bowl. And believe me I don’t think Revis is right, he’s been absolutely selfish, but I will blame everyone if he’s not playing by week 1

  8. avatar neauone says:

Revis would not fall under the four year rule under the CBA of 2010 and in effect would be tied to the Jets for the next 3 years. He would actually be shooting himself in the foot by not showing up for his pay and play. If your going to trade the guy or talk of a trade which I don’t for a moment think is going to happen. Than send him to Oakland, we pick up 5 number one’s and Al can pay him 20 million a year. LOL

  9. avatar Shamik says:

I need to bury this bleep’s jersey. My greatest wish right now is for the Jets to win the SB with Revis sitting out for the year, ruining his free agent status and then shipping him off to Cleveland when he comes around to beg for a super bowl ring.

  10. avatar JetMetVet says:

    Revistory.

  11. avatar Mark Sanchez says:

If Revis holds out for the year, he runs the risk of missing 2 years in row because of the lockout.

  12. avatar jeff i says:

just trade the guy and move on.

don’t get me wrong, there’s only one revis and he’s great. but we don’t need revis this year. we’ve added a lot of depth to the secondary (wilson, cromartie, pool) and with all the offensive firepower we have now we don’t really need to rely upon the defense as much.

we can use the exorbitant amount of $ he’s asking for to sign mangold, harris, s. holmes, cromartie, etc…

i’m sure the redskins would give up at least two #1s for revis — maybe even more?

  13. avatar GrnMtnMan says:

I just can’t believe that the Revis Camp is being so ridiculous. It’s been said a million times on this site today already, but this guy held out to get the contract that he has right now! It was frontloaded so that he got all his cheese in the early years of the contract and when he signed it it was clearly understood that down the road there would be years where the salary dropped to $1mil.

I’m hoping beyond hope that tomorrow’s headline will be: “Evil Voodoo Witchdoctor arrested for Mind-Controlling Revis, Contract now signed”.

    • The thing is that he wants all the cheze at the start of this new contract as well, thats why the Jets can’t give in here, cos he’s just going to want more again.

I mean the Jets have offered to increase his deal for this year by 400%, and pay him Aso money for the 6 year extention what is ur issue Revis.

I think he knows he’ll never honor a new deal and is just trying to fleese the Jets for as much as possable before he hangs it up, didn’t his uncle do something similar in Carolina, signed a huge deal and then did nothing for that team

  14. avatar Marvel says:

I guess sitting out for 3 years as opposed to making 21 mill is the move that benefits his family the most ..

2 holdouts in 3 seasons .. While Tom Brady who has 3 SB rings plays out his contract ..

This guy is a clown .. If you can’t see it, I can’t help you ..

  15. avatar belvey631 says:

If he sits out this entire season, there’s no way he’ll play on this team again.(at least he shouldn’t)
Its a good thing we powered up our offense. We’re gonna have to put up more points.

  16. avatar kwesi says:

this is nuts – I have been a Jets Fan for so long. The opportunity to have one of the greatest defenses ever and they are going to muck around. Pay him the damn money. Simple

    • avatar viguy007 says:

Not that simple as paying him. The Jets have one pool of money for all players. If we overpay him we will not have the money to pay other important players. What does that get us. He wants to take the money from his teammates. It is not like the Jets were cheap and were way under the cap. This is a team and lives or dies as a team.

  17. avatar billvv says:

You haven’t even seen a preseason game. How can you give in so easily. The Giants game is this week. At least wait until you see them PLAY before you freak out!

    • I wish someone could leak the contract proposals though I wanna know whats going on.

      • don’t trade him, let him rot. leaks have started ie Revis was insulted that the Jets only offered him $5 million to play this season, thats what pushed him into his holdout, and the Jets have said that Revis’s new offer was pretty much what they had already delivered( they prob knocked of a million or so)

    • avatar viguy007 says:

His uncle tells him we will pay him and he will get the money he wants. I would rather have him be an example to others. Let him sit for three years, we will not have to face him, so he will not be a problem for us. We will not have the advantage of his skills, but neither will anybody else. It is a pity all the way around.

  18. Two holdouts in four years shows he is selfish. I’m so disappointed at this. He’s no less of a prima donna than the WR’s he covers, but at least most of those guys went to camp. I almost usually always blame the FO for this stuff, but this is a terrible pattern with Revis. The Jets should never, ever have approached his agent right after the AFC title game. They deserve the blame for creating this mess. But Revis self-centered actions have completely dwarfed the Jets irresponsibility. Maybe I’m subconciously throwing Revis under the bus to help me feel better if he sits out 2010, but I’m crushed at his lack of team spirit. This is a business bla bla bla bla nothing is guaranteed bla bla bla. Well, he’s averaged $4.6 million per year since he’s been in the NFL. That’s nearly 4 times what Leon earned and significantly more than what any of us are earning. Screw him. If I’m the Jets and he skips 2010 I take all the money I thought I was going to use to extend him and use it tie his case up in labyrinthian litigation so he doesn’t play a down of football for the rest of his days as a Jet.

    • avatar Bent says:

Do you really believe Revis would be happy to play for 1m if the Jets didn’t approach him first?

The guy reportedly turned down a deal that increased that to 4m because it was “insulting.”

When they approached Revis, they didn’t know that they’d have to comply with the 30% rule and that setting upfront money against the uncapped year would not be an option. This was because the NFL surprised teams by announcing an alternative interpretation of the rules and made long term deals much more difficult.

  19. avatar Mike says:

Send revis to oakland and trade for aso.. or a 1st round draft pick.. The oaklandis going to suck this year anyways

  20. Green Lantern, Tanny should be fired if they trade him.

Revis is the only, the only NFL player with a contract not at camp according to Chris Mortenson (Mike and Mike segment). Those who are pissed at him have even more reasons to be. What a piggy.

If you trade him, he will get the contract he wants. Jet players will know that Jet contracts are not binding and sit out so they can get traded if they or their agents think that they are being “underpaid”.

It is time to allow Revis to make one choice and one choice only. Come to camp and play out your deal or sit out and earn nothing or come in late and earn next to nothing.

More importantly, Tanny and Woody need to go public and say that they will not trade Revis even if he sits out all three years. Plus if there is a franchise tag in the next CBA, even after three years, he will have to settle for that or nothing.

    Harlan

  21. avatar spent says:

I hope Revis will be man enough to sit out the season and not just show up and dog it.

  22. avatar HHH says:

“More Neil Schwartz: “We believe our proposals addressed their concerns &issues” Mike Tannenbaum and Woody Johnson disagree. #nfl #nyj #jets”

  23. avatar Randy says:

Im getting the impression that Revis Camp thinks it is too good for the Jets.Every day this thing goes by I am convinced Revis doesn’t want to be a Jet and want to play for a team like the Saints,Colts,Patriots,Giants, etc..

He wants all the Fame as being the highest paid CB in the NFL and wants to become a Star on a Playoff Team.He is acting like he is a common NBA player such as Dwayne Wade where he wants Money,Fame, commercials and exposure as being a Superstar in his sport.

    • avatar bilal says:

You mean the same Dwayne Wade who won a championship and then recruited the two biggest free agents to SHARE the spotlight with him in order to win more chips?

      Horrible comparison

  24. avatar Nick says:

He HAS to sign, if the Jets just simply send him there best offer and REFUSE to speak to him anylonger. It’s career suicide to sit out for two years (assuming a lockout)!!

  25. avatar Paul says:

Honestly.. this is just getting worse and worse and it looks like he might never play for us again. The longer this goes on, the worse it gets.

And I’m not gonna lie, I’m a little pissed at our front office for not manning up and cutting him a big check. If there is a “30%” rule then why not give him a ton of guaranteed money over the next 5 years? The Texans did it for Andre and he has 5 years left! I swear to god when it comes to extending contracts this team does it horribly.. what are we gonna do when David Harris wants premier money.. and Mangold wants to be the highest paid corner? Are we not gonna give it to them? Because as of right now, the answer looks like NO!.. Makes me sick.

    • avatar Bent says:

We had a post on here summing up why Andre Johnson’s deal is a very small raise with almost no new fully guaranteed money, lots of incentives and two years bolted onto the end that are not guaranteed. That really doesn’t strengthen his case because it’s no better than what he’s already turned down.

The market is far more straightforward for Centers and LBs, so hopefully they won’t prove that problematic under the new CBA.

You’re not wrong, it doesn’t look good.

      • Given the reported money the Jets were offering him, and that they are saying there a massive gap bewteen the 2 side, he must be looking for 140 Million or so, my god !!!

        • avatar Bent says:

I expect the Jets have offered him the money he wants or upfront money, but not both (yet).

          • avatar Bent says:

140m is fine as long as it’s over 10 years and backloaded. If the last two years are 18m and he is still an All Pro in 8 years, that might be reasonable money for an all pro corner by then.

  26. avatar AS says:

and eat aso’s contract? no thank you

  27. avatar Randy says:

Is it possible we can trade Holmes with his suspension along with Revis for an Elite Receiever such as Reggie Wayne? I would do that in a heartbeat.I doubt the Colts do it for the same reason they don’t want to pay that much money when they have to lock up their own players like Manning who deserve that kind of money.

We need to start concidering using Revis as a trading piece to acquire a major upgrade at one of our other roster spots.

We can upgrade at CB,DE,WR,DT,S as the biggest needs. So what are the possibilities?

    • avatar jsa says:

Fully agree. The mantra “let Revis rot for three years” works as a threat, but does not help the Jets on the field in any way. It does no good to have Revis under contract and not on the field.

I think it’s too early in the holdout to trade Revis, and he hasn’t publicly asked for a trade. But if it goes into the season, I’d rather trade him and get something in return than let this great asset waste away. At Revis’s talent and age, we should be able to get a whole lot in return.

Revis sitting out a year is Mutually Assured Destruction. It represents a failure by all sides and helps no one.

    • avatar njdpelc says:

CB and WR are our strong points. We don’t need to upgrade there. And holmes is a beast you’d be crazy to trade him and revis for anything. Even if you got wayne and two first rounders cause they’d be late first rounders as usual.

    • avatar bilal says:

You would trade Revis and Holmes for Wayne!?!? The colts would JUMP on that. Wayne is getting is on his way downward and you wanna get rid of a young superbowl MVP for him?

  28. avatar mitch says:

so smart of them to get these other guys in. let revis rot in hell! he signed the deal now deal with it

  29. avatar Marvel says:

If your boss comes to you & says “hey I like what you’ve been doing, & I want to give you a 10% pay increase even though I don’t have to” & you say “FU man, I want a 50% pay increase even though I have no leverage”, how exactly is the boss at fault ?

Instead of being greatfull this Clown flips the script .. If Mevis plays or sits Cro will have 12-14 picks .. KDub will have to play ball .. I’m game ..

Please Woody make your next offer to this clown your last, if he says no, let him sit for 3 seasons .. Done & Done ..

  30. I thought the 30% rule did not apply to Revis’ situation. I could be wrong of course.

    • avatar Bent says:

It does, but not in the same way as Harris/Mangold. For them, it restricts their annual raises to such an extent that 80% of the contract is going to have to be signing bonus or incentives. For Revis, it doesn’t affect that as much because he received a decent sum in 2009, but it does affect how the contract can be structured, which is important. They can’t couple a big bonus with low salaries to keep early cap charges down because the later years have to be high.

It’s the reallocation rule that hurts his chances because it prevents the Jets from fully guaranteeing money unless they pay it up front.

      • avatar 96DEBACLE says:

i have to say after this i am VERY hesitant for the JETS giving a lot of up front money. i can see him pulling a Haynsworth after 2 years.
“thanks…i want more. no? well i’ll just sit again…”

i love what Revis did for us last year. i get his desire to have the security with a long term with alot in guarantee. with that, i’m ready to move on if he doesnt report. pay the people in camp IMO.
        i’m a jets fan 1st.

  31. avatar JetsFan4Life says:

Assuming it’s years played under K that allow a player to reach FA, couldn’t Jets effectively keep him as a RFA indefinitely? If he never plays his fourth year how would he ever become a FA? Is that assumption correct?

If so, let him come back and play, or find another career!

    • avatar Bent says:

Gilbert successfully sued the Redskins for trying to franchise him again after he sat out the season. I’d imagine Revis would consider doing the same in that situation.

      • avatar JetsFan4Life says:

Guess we’d need to know whether Gilbert was already a FA at point when he sat out (presumably he was)…otherwise seems a clear distinction could be drawn.

        • avatar Bent says:

Yes, he played out his rookie deal. Revis wants to tear up the second half of his.

His rookie deal was blasted for being too low, the complete opposite of Revis.

  32. this is all getting on my last nerve. forget this dude right now! we’re preparing for the season without him. We have Cromartie and Kyle Wilson and if Rex can make Fabian Washington look good, then you best believe he’s gonna turn Kyle Wilson into something. We’re gonna win with or without this guy. Our offense is much better and we have a defensive mastermind as our head coach. I love you Revi$ but this is too much

  33. avatar belvey631 says:

At this point I’ll just expect Revis to be done as a Jet. If he comes back that’s great but I’m not gonna hold my breath. I know its early but it’s time to start game planning without him.

  34. avatar Mark Sanchez says:

It’s only the 2nd week of training camp. There is still lots of time to get something done. Revis doesn’t want to hold out, and the Jets obviously want him there. Something will get done.

  35. avatar Will says:

Im so sick of this, i have nothin to say

If this guy doesnt play, i might be done with this sorry ass franchise

  36. avatar Randy says:

What we have going for us is that Revis will be the best player in the deal so we can almost certainly get anybody we want that is available.

Let me name a few guys that could make us a better team. Not knowing of course who is a possiblity but just a few players that I would love to have.I didnt mention Vincent Jackson because he is Suspended therefore I want no part of him.

    Wide Receivers
    Calvin Johnson (Det)
    Larry Fitzgerald (ARZ)
    Michael Crabtree (SF)

    Safety
    Adrian Wilson (ARZ)
    Antoine Bethea/Bob Sanders (IND)
    Troy Polamalu (PIT)

    Defensive Ends
    Dwight Freeney (IND)
    Trent Cole (PHI)
    Jared Allen (MIN)

    Cornerbacks
    Asante Samuel (PHI)
    Charles Woodson (GB)
    Nnamdi Asomugha (Oak)

Best Case scenerio Though, I can see us trading for both Greg Jennings and Charles Woodson for Darrelle Revis and Santonio Holmes.

  37. avatar Mark Sanchez says:

all of this rhetoric is part of the holdout process, and a deal makes too much sense not to happen just before the season starts.

  38. avatar AKA Jack says:

I’m a fan of the NY Jets and any player who contributes to their success. That doesn’t mean I think the team is perfect or incapable of tough negotiations.

In this case I am convinced they have been more than fair and it’s Revis who is being unreasonable. His actions are bordering on being destructive to the teams goals right now and if this drags on much longer I am very supportive of sending him to some NFC Wst team like the Seahawks (hi Leon) where he can get his money and finish his career in obscurity.

There’s no I in team and apparently there is no team in RevIs.

  39. avatar TheRealRK says:

This is part of the game, both sides proclaim gloom and doom…we’ve seen it so many times. I still believe one of these days before the season starts out of nowhere we will get leaks that “The Jets and Revis are close” and it will be done. I’m not saying my nerves aren’t a little frayed but this is all part of the negotiating game. Don’t take anything either side says too seriously. Next thing you’ll hear Revis’s agent talk about how he’s prepared to sit out the entire year.

    • “Next thing you’ll hear Revis’s agent talk about how he’s prepared to sit out the entire year.”

We’ve already gotten that. Which is why Woody pee’d on the offer team Revis just sent over to him on Friday.

  40. avatar Nostraboys says:

If the Jets sign Revis for the money he wants it will take up almost 1/4 of the team’s total cap. If one player wants 1/4 of the teams money for himself then he is not a team player! That means that 52 other guys have to be signed and it cannot be done with the cap. Revis I thought you were a team player! Now we all know the truth, you are only looking out for yourself. We as fans want TEAM players not money hungry cry babies. Revis, if you don’t show by tomorrow night you will be out a whole lot of money! Good luck.

    • avatar Bent says:

1/4 of the cap is about 33m. Does he want 33m a year?

      • Plus, Nostraboys, you have no earthly idea what the cap is going to look like after the lockout, or if there’ll even BE a cap system afterwards. The one you’re talking about is gone, over, goodbye with the death of the CBA.

Remember, the cap was imposed by the owners on themselves once FA began to keep them from killing each other.

The players hate it. The players now also hate the owners. So if they’re locked out of their jobs by owner greed, don’t be shocked to see the players drag their heels on agreeing to set up a new cap system.

  41. avatar Randy says:

Realistic Possibility of Trade scenrios such as this would point to us trading Darrelle Revis to GB for Charles Woodson and 1st Rd Draft picks from GB for 2011 and 2012 assuming that GB agrees to a contract extension for Revis.

  42. avatar Ed L says:

revis was good before rex….but with rex he was great…. he may be able to be great some place else but you see big jinx, jt, and all the jets saying how much a pleasure it is playing for rex…how people wanna be jets now just to play for rex….and revis is pulling this….

look i am sure woody and tanny are not dumb…these are the same people you praised with other moves the jets have made…

revis is being selfish and stupid because he is getting advice from his **** head uncle and geigergeiger who is his friend from college who prolly was on his knees for him through college…

i think it is all pathetic on revis’ part….honestly i dont see the jets D being that much worse off with out revis then with him because we picked up a lot of help with cro and lowery

  43. avatar Mark Sanchez says:

Woodson would suck on our defense, and is at the end of his career. I think not. Revis will get signed, and all will be well in the world.

  44. avatar Ed L says:

and i also dont believe that revis will sit out the whole season that we open up a new stadium have all the prime time games….if we do succeed without him…fans will forget about him in a heartbeat especially when there is no season next year

  45. avatar Lysol says:

We don’t know the details and we won’t even when this is all through. My gut tells me he will sign. It will get done. This is too important to both sides. Revis getting paid and the potential of a lockout and the Jets needing a super bowl.

  46. avatar geoff says:

    theres still time ..

  47. avatar Nostraboys says:

Peyton Manning only makes around 15 million a year (7 years at 99 million) and Revis wants 20! No player especially a defensive player deserves 20 million a year. Come back to reality Revis.

    • avatar Bent says:

But when reports surfaced that he wanted 20m a year, he said that was ludicrous.

      • It’s almost past the point of rational thought, Bent.

The F.O. has whipped up a pretty good mob mentality on here about Revis, and it’s picked up a lot of ugly steam.

I’ll argue with anyone until the cows come home about this or anything, but these posts re: Darrelle now are mostly just insane droolings…

        • avatar Bent says:

Its a frustrating situation and a lot of people are just venting. That’s why we’re here!

“Just pay him whatever he wants” and “Screw him, we don’t need him” are just a ridiculous as each other at opposite ends of the scale, especially when we don’t know for sure what the proposals have been so far.

It doesn’t look good, but I’m going to try to keep an open mind.

          • I’m with you on that one, Bent. Both of the extremes miss all manner of points, as I stated late last week.

There is cold, hard, ugly business being played out here, and it will go the way it needs to go. That’s what I’m most interested in.

I don’t mind the venting aspect of things. I can vent with the best of them, lord knows. It’s good we have you and Brian here to help us do that. But the sheer irrational torch and pitchfork frenzy of it, getting ugly at times, that makes things really uneasy.

  48. Right now it’s all talk, so calm down everybody. If this isn’t resolved by Week 4, then trade him and let’s move on. Until then, it’s 2 sides talking tough.

  49. avatar James in TN says:

I can’t believe I am saying this, but I now like Jason Taylor better than the Holdout and the Rehab. At least JT is in camp. Sad.

  50. avatar BigKatt says:

Revis for Aso and two #1′s? i’d go for that. That’s four number one’s over the next two years, plus a guy that while in Rob Ryan’s system in Oakland was considered the best corner in football. Plus, sending to the Raiders would most likely mean not having to see him in the playoffs. I hate to jump the gun, because i want nothing more then both sides to reach an agreement tonight, but if one doesn’t come through this looks pretty damn good to me.

    • avatar Bent says:

The Raiders don’t have another first rounder until 2012.

Also, paying Asomugha and two first rounders will make it even less possible to keep the rest of the core together, especially when you add in a potential small dead money hit from trading Revis.

    • avatar Randy says:

That sound like a lot from Oakland and the Raiders would be stupid to do that move. They would be paying more money fore Revis who is slightly better than ASO and be giving up 2 first Rd Picks.Al Davis would be killed if he made that trade.

  51. avatar Randy says:

Did anyonce catch E60 with Woody Johnson?

When asked his Gut feeling about whether or not Revis will be playing this season Woody Johnson simply replied, “NO”..

Im really starting to worry about this now that he would publicly say that.

  52. avatar Jcjets says:

Wow this is pretty dissapointing news..

Jets keep saying the issue is total compensation or the yearly avg salary. Woody has said guaranteed money and everything else can be worked out once they find the total compensation. So they still haven’t even gotten that far..

I saw it reported that Champ Bailey will be making 13million+ this year.

  53. avatar tyrone says:

i sold a car today and made 700$ f revis let him sit for the next 3years

  54. Hey Woody!

    Play like a Jet!

Have the courage to cross your fellow owners as they take the NFL over a cliff.

Show us, your fanbase — the ones who pay for your little green toy — that you care about us, and not only about lining the pockets of the 31 other owners who would rip your financial heart out in a second.

It’d be nice if you were a Jet. But I doubt you are.

    • avatar James in TN says:

Lost me on that one. Say what?

    • Oops, sorry, didn’t mean to lose you there.

It’s simple, gentlemen, and I’ll try to make it as concise as I can.

The entire Revis affair is only partly about ‘A player’ and ‘A team.’

Like the Spanish Civil War, this is not being conducted in a vacuum, and if you’ve been reading the NFL labor articles along the way, it smells exactly like a dress run for larger issues and many more actors.

As noted before, the owners have decided they want the players to pay a healthy chunk of the freight on these new football palaces they’ve been building since cash-strapped local/state govts stopped floating heavyweight bonds for 8 home games a year. The owners have been paying more of the construction fare so they got the bright idea they want the players to pay half.

The players, as you’d assume, laughed and told them to forget it. So, it’s been Owner Tanty Time ever since.

THAT is why they pulled out of the CBA. That is why they walked away from the bargaining table with the NFLPA.

That is why we have an uncapped 2010, and why we have this dopey 30% Rule which the owners slid into the old CBA to prevent Steinbrenner types like Jones in Dallas from buying a Super Bowl in case we ever got to the point we’re standing at right now. This is all because of the greed of the owners.

In a regular year, under the dopey-but-dealable rules of the CBA, re-doing Revis’ contract would have been tricky but doable. None of us would have gone through this crap if this were a couple of years ago.

However, really bad timing had DR blow up into a dominant and very marketable league-wide presence at the exact same time the owners were attempting to tamp down the financial playing field in preparation for their Great Idea — The Lockout of 2011. No one across the NFL wants to pay his players any out-sized contracts, since they still don’t know if they’ll be on the hook for salaries and bonuses in 2011 during the LO.

The new rules imposed on the league’s GMs by the owners’ action of pulling out of the CBA, now prohibits any of the creative ways the very creative Tanny would have had available to him to help reach a deal with his superstar.

The local NY problem stemmed from Tanny telling DR’s agent in Indy after the Champ Game, that he’d re-do DR’s contract. Bad move. DR took that as a promise, but then the league wouldn’t let Tanny do what he’d have to do to pull that off. So to DR, that’s a broken promise. He’s not about to accept any of the make-believe proposals that Tanny is now forced to send to him by the owners.

DR is smart and competitive and knows full well this is coming from the league. He knows Tanny would do the right thing if he could.

So DR called the league’s bluff. “You now say I’m one of the Top 3-5 guys in the entire NFL, fine, pay me like one.” Ohhh, nooo, the owners respond, we can’t!! We have these rules!! “But they’re YOUR rules!” DR says. The owners simply turn away.

Revis has apparently decided that these rules are bogus, and will not abide by them. He doesn’t want to hear about 30% Rules. They don’t apply if you decide they do not apply.

      That’s where Woody comes in.

This is what I meant about Woody standing up to his fellow owners. Legally, Woody can pay Revis or any member of his organization whatever price he feels matches that person’s worth.

The brotherhood of the owners is the only thing standing in the way of that.

Revis really is taking on the entire league here. I believe he’s well aware of that fact. So, it does really come down to Woody, and whether he’d have the guts to break with his fellow owners, toss away those dopey owner contract rules and pay his team what he feels is fair value.

But I, for one, do not think Woody had anywhere near that type of courage.

I would love to be wrong on this, but I’m afraid I’m pretty close to the mark.

I know this is long, but I hope I’ve made it a little clearer.

      • avatar BigBear says:

Nice post. Was with you til the end. I don’t believe that Woody is in a position to put the toothpaste back in the tube – ie, go back and undo the opting out of the CBA.

The question is where to go now. Like many on this site, I am disappointed that this is lasting this long – but candidly I am not surprised. The start of the regular season is still a month away and unfortunately these situations seem to take the time allotted (though I was hoping for Aug 10th). I am hoping that we can either get a better “band-aid” deal done or (ideally) a long-term deal (maybe one that is set up to be easily redone to be more cap friendly under the expected new CBA).

In some ways, it is frustrating that we really don’t know what the various proposals have been so we can’t see how close the two sides are. However, I believe the fact that each side has not disclosed details of the offers/positions means that we are not at an impasse yet and thus in some ways it is better than the alternative.

        Patience, my friends, patience.

  55. avatar NJets says:

    Not worried at all anymore.

This is going to hurt Revis and his agents more than it will hurt the Jets. Thats the BOTTOM LINE.

The front office made a brilliant move for Cro and then again for Wilson.

Reading about it so much has made me numb and comfortable with the idea of going without Revis. Mangold is more important anyway (hes at camp by the way, making everyone else better).

  56. avatar Jetrsfan310 says:

I dont always agree with Mike Florio at PFT but he said it best. This deal makes too much sense to not get done. We need Revis to win the superbowl. Revis is not going to sit out this year with a lockout looming. I expect this to get done, we need Revis to win.

  57. avatar Jetrsfan310 says:

Scratch that thought we need Revis to win. We are still superbowl contenders without him he just increases are chances by a lot.

  58. avatar juunit says:

I still think the Jets are just playing hardball and acting as if they’re willing to let Revis wait as long as he wants until HE bends. Whether the Jets themselves will bend if Revis doesn’t when the beginning to the season comes around, well I don’t know that. But by making it appear like they aren’t close at all, the Jets are attempting to make Revis sweat. Like I remember when I was in Rome and was buying a shirt from a street vendor near the Spanish Steps. I didn’t want to pay too much, and the guy lowered his price, but not enough, so I walked away. I’d walked maybe 10 feet when he called me back and sold me the shirt for my price. You’ve got to make them believe (Revis) that you (the Jets) are willing to just walk away.

  59. avatar MrJetGreen says:

Good by Bevis….have fun this fall with Butthead.

  60. avatar Pdubbs says:

It’s a chain effect because if we sign Revis we look bad to Mangold and Harris. However, we need Revis to be amazing…..

I can’t believe Revis is going to ruin this for thousands of fans who have been waiting for a long time to have a season like this.

    • IMHO, it’s exactly the opposite.

The Jets actions now are only cementing the bad relations that have grown between locker room and FO over the last few years.

You wanna make the other core guys happy? Settle with Derrelle, whom they all acknowledge as NY Jet top dog. If they see him get paid, they’ll know they’ll get paid.

  61. avatar Marvel says:

Bent, I give it another week & then you will have to spam block all comments ..

Either our secondary looks amazing against the giants or it looks average, either way it’s “F*** Mevis we can win without him” or “F*** Mevis he’s a selfish jerk who doesn’t care about the team” ..

I honestly believe we can win without him, but I understand it would be easier with him .. Say we cave, Harris,Mangold & everyother Jet who doesn’t like their contract should pull a Mevis .. Who would blame them ?

Sure Brandon Marshall kicked the ball out of some kids hand but atleast he PLAYED .. If “Revis” sits this season will you promise to call him a selfish clown ?(serious question)

  62. I’m sweating. No doubt. I think Revis may just be crazy enough to sit out this season and run the risk of not playing football for two years (considering the potential lockout next year). His ties to that uncle of his is beyond a shadow of a doubt very scary.
The team can’t stop practicing and like Rex said, they must prepare for life Revis-less.
It really is just wild when you think that literally the guy has played 3 seasons and has already held out for two contracts.
Interesting side note: Revis’ agents (Schwartz and Feinsod) also have a problem in SD with Vincent Jackson and rumor has it that he will sit out the first ten games. Who the f**k do these two agents think they are? Two studs that don’t play a seasons worth of games.

  63. Revis had a good year last year. The Jets offered him a $4M bonus to acknowledge that. He’s still under contract for 3 more years counting this one. Since he structured his original contract to get his money up front and play this year for $1M, no way a $4M “attaboy” is an insult.

As for those who say just pay him, they must work for the government. In real life, you can’t just print money. The guy refused a $100M extension. How mush is “just pay him the money?” Two hundred million? 500 million? Get real.

  64. avatar WW85 says:

Bent, How does this situation affect Revis’s FA status? I’m not clear on that.

None of us have a clue what Revis is asking for or what the Jets are countering. We can only guess. I agree that Revis sounds like a selfish sh.., but we really don’t know the facts at all. The Jet PR machine is powerful & I bet some of the PR makers are on this blog.

    • avatar Bent says:

Long story short, it may not have a material effect on his FA status.

Him missing that deadline could mean that he’d be an RFA (at a lower cost) if the Jets elected to not buy him back. They’d then possibly be able to franchise him. However, this is aggressive and not without risk. It’s also possible he’d be an RFA regardless, so the FA situation may be a red herring.

  65. avatar Bkwrxwgn says:

Let Revis rot if he’s a no show, expectations from the media about the Jets will change but that might give the team the motivation to step it up to their own expectations of what Rex has been preaching. To top it off the FO should work out and settle contracts with Mangold and Harris. This will show the rest of the team if you stayed quiet and worked hard you will get paid. I know it’s tough for us fans to assume we’re going in without our top CB but just treat it like he’s injuried from selfishness and move on.

  66. avatar g.JETSon says:

went to USA Today.com top NFL Salaries2009. P Rivers 25.5mil, E Manning 20.5mil, C Long 19mil, K Warner 19mil, K Hayden 17.5mil, M shaub 17mil, J Peppers 16.6mil, G Jennings 16mil, A smith 15.5 mil and T Suggs 15mil. That was the top ten for all those saying Revis doesn’t deserve 16 mil a few things. there are only 4 Qbs on that list all over what Revis is asking. Lookat those names and tell me we can’t put Revis between Peppers and Suggs. The other thing all of those clubs are good so paying 1 or 2 players that money didn’t stop any of these teams from getting other good pkayers so it won’t kill us to pay Revis. The arguments that only QBs get that money or if you pay a guy that it prevents you from signing or getting other good players is bull****!

    • avatar Bent says:

None of those guys get that much every year. I believe several of those numbers include one off bonus money.

I don’t think any of them have only been in the league three years, either.

    • And none of those teams are in the same cap situation as us. Its not as simple as saying O Baltimore gave Terrel Suggs this much how come we cant.

  67. avatar LeRevis says:

Don’t worry REvis will be playing week 1.

  68. avatar AJ says:

Trade him for ST Louis first and second round pick next year.

  69. avatar F- Revis says:

    Revis is a greedy POS.

  70. avatar F- Revis says:

Our team is on the field.

    3 years, 2 holdouts. Nice.

  71. avatar Ghost On says:

I just hope his nickname doesn’t become a literal truth. I would like to see him, helping his team, and leading our def to the championship. The def and him need each other.

Well, I do agree that he will be playing week 1 and we forget all this brouhaha. I just can’t see him sitting out a game…

  72. avatar James in TN says:

Trade him to Cleveland for Cribbs and a 1st

  73. avatar Harvlis says:

    Woody,

This is our year, you greedy piece of dogmeat. Sign Revis to a fair contract, that locks him up until he is gray, and lets move on from this drama.

  74. avatar TOON2388 says:

both sides are negotiating well as nobody has caved.

Here is a new angle (if someone else has presented it, I apologize). Thinking back to year Emmitt Smith held out – Dallas gets off to bad start, all of a sudden, Enmmit is there for Week 3. Team Revis see Baltimore and New England the 1st 2 weeks. They just might be willing to see if we start 0-2, and you can bet your last $ that he would be on that field for week 3 in Miami.

  75. You cant argue against 2 Holdouts In Three Years.
EVERYONE Saying Just Pay Revis You Dont Get It! We can’t do that without Killing our cap, and losing some very valuable players.
I would be very surprised if Revis is playing Week 1 but Id Also be surprised if he got traded even though that is the most logical solution.

    • avatar JetsFan4Life says:

Agree! Although we lose if he’s not a Jet. and could we get some decent value for him, probably, but why? Sends wrong message to all the JETS other players. Rex’s Manta – “Play like a Jet” Translation – be tough, and be a team player. Instead, he’s a prima donna. He’s not happy then just sit on him 4ever (don’t forget, he’ll never be a FA unless he plays for the Jets for one more year, perhaps two if he misses the 8/10 deadline).

Is he really willing to end his career?

  76. avatar F- Revis says:

I think Emmitt had a bigger impact on a game in his prime than Revis ever could. Give me a break…

I don’t understand how a kid who grew up with NOTHING can’t be satisfied with $12mm+ a year….

  77. avatar F- Revis says:

I realize it may be blasphemy on this site but Tom Brady = Team Player. 5 years, $50mm. Allowed for flexibility to win championships by signing other players. If he chooses now to hold out, I would respect that. But guess what – he’s in camp.

  78. trade him this year and if he plays against us we will just throw the ball to cotch and holmes while revis covers braylon…im jus messin around dont take seriously

  79. avatar ziggyd says:

not for nothing we were basically an 8-8 team last year with grevis having a career year…let him stew…we own him for the next three years minimum since this year will not qualify if he doesn’t show up by midnight tomorrow…if the Jets pay grevis the money he wants, it will guarantee losing Mangold or Harris….f**k him….

  80. avatar C Low says:

I hate to say this but Mangold is more important to this team than Revis. Trade Revis and get a tong of draft pics and let Mr. T work his magic

(My wife got me a revis jersey for christmas, it would be a shame that I couldn’t rock it for one freakin’ jet game but whatevers…..

  81. if we do trade revis for a mediocre player and a pick or 2…then you gotta hope cromartie plays good so we can sign him mangold harris holmes and edwards next year instead of jus revis and mangold and maybe 1 more out of that list if we dont trade him…just wish he would realize that this team has the potential to be great for a couple years if he signs a reasonable contract for him and the team…the saga continues!!!

  82. avatar F- Revis says:

“Nobody here can solve it but myself and the team,” Brady said after practice Friday morning at New England’s training camp. “I’m in the position a lot of guys are around the league and on this team. I’m under contract and it’s my responsibility to come out and play as well as I can. I’ve always felt that’s what I love to do anyway — to come out here and compete.”

Brady, who turns 33 Monday, said that he would like to play another 10 years, hopefully for the Patriots. He is making $6.5 million in the final year of his contract.

THE HUDDLE: Kraft insists Brady will remain with Patriots

Brady believes he has the mental toughness to not let the contract talks or anything else become a distraction that would affect his play.

“We all deal with different stuff in our life — some more challenging than others — but I’m a leader on this team and I’ve been a captain for a long time. You just put those things off the field behind you and come here with a good attitude and show good leadership.”

  83. avatar F- Revis says:

Hate to say it but a certain Jet could learn alot from a certain Super Bowl MVP that we root against.

  84. avatar ziggyd says:

and this guy thinks he can walk back into the lockerroom as a team leader skipping two a days with three years left on his contract….please…the other players will always say the right thing to reporters about him but don’t believe it for a minute…the Brady blog says it all about winners and whiners…

  85. avatar Dmazz says:

If I had a Revis jersey I would burn it Lebron style.

  86. avatar WOJF says:

I certainly hope Mr. T dotted the I’s and crossed the T’s on that contract, because it the other side certainly appears confident those options to buy back DR’s contract will be ruled invalid.

No one wanted to hear it a month ago when the national media leaked that Revis’ agents believed that contract was invalid, and I know our resident cap guys believe it is valid, and their argument is persuasive, but they dont have a copy of the contract. All it takes is a little gray and a friendly arbitor or judge.

    • avatar Bent says:

Virtually all of the National Media completely ignored that report, presumably because they looked into it and there was nothing to it.

We don’t need a copy of the contract. The contract has already been approved by the NFL, including the buyback option.

      • avatar WOJF says:

There is a higher court in this land than the NFL, believe it or not, and judges sometimes see things differently.

If Revis goes nuclear you think the NFL will risk its anti-trust exemption to defend this deal? Not.

In any case, his camp seems firmly entranched, no matter the specifics our team is in trouble this year.

        • avatar Brendan says:

The team is not in trouble. The team is still good. The team will survive without Revis.

        • avatar Bent says:

I appreciate that, but I’m of the view that in the event that the NFL tried to block a transaction they had previously approved under the same set of rules, a court would find in favor of the Jets. There is no talk from anyone about this issue, so I have to conclude it’s a non-issue. In any case, it looks like Florio was wrong that the Jets can’t RFA him instead of executivg the buyback, so they’d still control his rights for two years.

If Revis thought there was a chance he could be free after this season, he’d show up by midnight, to preserve his 4th accrued year. He won’t.

  87. avatar Dave75 says:

Let’s also not forget that Woodys comments might have been embellished a little bit for the Hard Knocks cameras! If this is alll as true as everyon says, I would love to hear Revis be a man and take questions. We’re not doubting that he deserves new but his demands are ludicrous. Let him rot on the bench and get the compensation for him next year!

  88. avatar Steelballs says:

What if i started a fund to donate money to pay for Darelle Revis to play this year for the Jets. Or why doesnt the jets sign a one year deal and wait until our salary cap is balanced out than give the kid what he wants. I just dont want to play this year without Revis. And Mr. GreenLantern…the most valuable player on the Jets IS revis, i dont care who we have to cut, this guy needs to play this year with us. You dont plan on winning a championship, then loose your star player, you just dont do that. And woody johnson wipes himself with millions of dollars, im sure if he wasnt completely retarted he would’ve worked somehting out already. Unfortunately he is.

    • avatar Bent says:

You can’t sign a one year deal for a guy who is under contract for three years. They need to sign at least a three year deal and I believe that if they are going to front Revis any money, they will insist on lengthening the deal by at least a year.

    • avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

I found it funny that you mispelled retarDed. Revis can sit if he wants. Sucks to lose him, but enough already.

  89. avatar JetsFan65 says:

    Bent

What is your take on what will happen with this whole Revis situation or is it too soon to even speculate? What would be smarter is revis sits out season, sit him or trade him?

    • avatar Bent says:

Honestly? I’m not expecting him to play this season. The Jets will wait it out in hopes that he lowers his demands. I don’t think they’ll try to trade him (and if they did I don’t think they’d get fair value at this time).

I’m not optimistic about their postseason chances in 2010 without him either, although overpaying him would have wider reaching impact than just one season, so I’m torn as to what the right move is.

That’s just a prediction based on what’s being said and perhaps clouded by multiple Jets-related disappointments over the years.

      • avatar JetsFan65 says:

        Thanks Bent!

I also think he won’t end up playing this year which is a damn shame because it will kill the Jets chances at a SB and could possibly ruin Revis’ career.

  90. avatar WW85 says:

Harvlis, How do you know the Jets haven’t already offered him a fair deal? Nobody knows the truth. A fair deal would be $12mm/year or so, but if DR is asking for 16mm, he can rot.

    • avatar Bent says:

A pretty trusted source had the Jets opening offer at an extra 4 years and 55m. That translates to just under 11m over seven years. I think it’s reasonable to assume they would be prepared to stretch that offer to 12 or 13m and probably already have.

  91. avatar Vince says:

Wow, Everyone is being over the top negative. I mean this is upsetting news and all but Revis could have a change of heart and play for the fans, teammates or whatever. Maybe Rex makes a call and convinces Revis to play this year (You never know). Woody believes whatever he wants but it’s all up to #24. The long and short of it is Revis will play on the best defense in football this year.

  92. avatar jets17 says:

All you saying to trade or bench revis are retarded. Without revis we loose, We DID NOT have nearly enough sacks last year to have a top defense, but we did have coverage sacks and made QBs throw the ball away or force him to make throws into small windows. Revis shutdown top recievers by himself without having a safety and we rolled coverage elsehwhere. Revis means more to our defense that Harris does for sure, there are plenty of great linebackers and no corners nearly as goood as revis. In a draft i bet 100% of us would choose revis over harris anyday.

  93. avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

Revis will not make or break this team. Are we better with him? Absolutelý. Does one CB make a backfield? No.

He is important, but he is not the make or break. If he is looking for 16 mil, I can understand why, but it is ridiculous. Doesn’t matter who gave Aso that stupid contract, the fact is…it exists. Revis is the best, he should be paid as such.

Still, the value to a team of someone like Mangold is much higher. C, blindside T, QB are all > CB to any team. One could make the argument for a few other positions as well.

Let him sit if he must. This is old @ this point.

  94. avatar Steelballs says:

He simply wants to be paid as the best corner in the leauge. Nnamdi Asomugha is being paid about 16 million. Darelle is much better than Asomugha and deserves to be paid as much. Woody is just a cheap bastard.

    • avatar Bent says:

Read: Jets far from cheapskates – http://m.espn.go.com/nfl/story?storyId=5373081

Asomugha only will only receive 28m from the first two years of his deal and will then be cut.

The most he will have earned over a six year period, even if he isn’t cut, is approximately 11m a year. I agree that Revis deserves more than Asomugha, but 16m a year over a six year period or more starting in year four is not slightly more, it’s almost 50% more.

Asomugha earned just 18m in his first five years. Revis has earned 15m in three and wants 16m a year starting from now?

The Jets have multiple free agents to sign next year. They can’t afford to overpay by so much.

    • avatar Brendan says:

I also don’t know if Revis is “much better” than Aso. Aso essentially closes an entire side of the field down for the day. He’s the only player that is in the same conversation as Darrelle.

  95. avatar Steelballs says:

But isnt this year an uncapped year. So wouldnt that leave it up to Woody to just pay the man. Yea Revis is asking for a lot, but what if he plays this year without that guaranteed money and gets hurt, than 1. He will never be the same, and 2. he will never get a chance at this much money again in his career. To be completely honest i think Revis is THE MOST important aspect on this team.

    • avatar Brendan says:

That’s the exact argument AGAINST upfront money. What happens if you give him $30 million (“just pay the man) and his leg snaps off? Then the team is screwed more than Revis.

    • avatar Bent says:

Although it’s an uncapped year, the maximum salary he can get under the uncapped year rules is 130% of last year which is 9.3m. Anything over and above that will affect future years and the cap position. The fact it’s an uncapped year has no bearing on the Jets ability to sign everyone next year.

  96. avatar Steelballs says:

So is this just a matter of Revis wanting something that is just impossible for him to get?
And now Dwight Lowery wants Kyle Wilson to start over him, and thats dangerous considering you have a rookie going up against, not only pro-bowl veterans in our leauge, but receivers that tower him. Not to say the same receivers down tower Darrelle, but at least Darrelle has had some experience with them already. Dwight Lowery needs to step up to the plate and fill some really big shoes, bottom line.
