Lowery Explains Comments
CORTLAND — On Monday, Rex Ryan said Dwight Lowery went to defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman and told him Kyle Wilson should start. The reaction from many – including some players – was, “… Huh?” Why would a player in a position to step into a starting role suggest another player for the job?
I wasn’t entirely sure where he was going with it, and when I spoke to a couple of his teammates, they weren’t either. This morning, Lowery clarified.
It’s not that he doesn’t want to start, but he is facing the idea that Darrelle Revis might not be here. He sees huge potential in Wilson and has assessed that the better Wilson is, the better the team will be. According to Lowery, because Wilson is a first-round pick, he needs to be on the field.
“You only get better by getting in there and playing,” Lowery said. “[The more he plays], the better his progression is going to be. I did it, too. It had an impact on my progression.
“Kyle’s a good player. I really think the best thing for himself and the team is to get in there.”
What you’re seeing here, in case you didn’t recognize it, is an actual case of ‘team first.’ Many talk the talk, Lowery is walking the walk.
In addition, Lowery is the first player who has really vocalized what everyone is starting to think, especially after Woody Johnson’s comments yesterday: Darrelle Revis could hold out for the entire season.
If Revis doesn’t report by midnight tonight, he will lose an entire accrued season. The players I spoke to, across the board, said they see no chance of him showing up by that deadline.

I see your point, but it is still odd to me that a player would point someone else out over themselves. Isn’t it in a player’s blood that he feels he should always start? Shouldn’t it be.
Like I said, I see your point. But to me, it’s still odd.

You can be selfish or you can be a team player. He sees what is best for the team, and acts on it, although it may not be best for you. Not like some others we know.
-
-
hes as good a back up cb as one could ask. Dwight is the man
-
Glass half full: team-first mentality
Glass half empty: lack of desire/confidenceI’m a glass half empty guy unfortunately

wrong tude

I’m not a big fan of Lowery’s talent. But my hat’s off to him because He knows what his role on this team is and it’s not at starting CB. Wison should take all the reps at CB.
-
lowery is a stand out guy, he knows his role on this defense and if you wanna try to call the guy a scrub at all remember this, he started alot alot of games for us last year that helped us be the number one defense, he probably notices and sees the potential in wilson and knows he could be a nice replacement of the greedy *******
-
I like Lowrey.. (except when Indy Colts are burning him), and this comment makes me like him more..
I think some of the ‘critics’ forget how he exceded a lot of expectations when he started the first half of the season as a rookie in 08.. That opener in Miami, he played great.. remember? anyone? I know Indy is a lot fresher in people’s minds..
If Revis stays home this year, Lowry in the slot isn’t so bad.. It’s Drew Coleman that scares the crap outta me!
-
He did play excellent his first year (i haven’t forgotten). Especially when you consider he came from a relativity small school (San Jose). However, I think he’s more of a cover corner and Mangini liked the zone defense so he did better under Mangini.
-
Which is why I wouldn’t be surprised to see him play at FS and possibly snag the starting job. He has impressive ball-skills. Man-to-man isn’t a strength, but for a DB is a decent tackler. I like his versatility, and in my opinion, his attitude too.
To Paul and LamJones,
I don’t know him so I can’t comment on his confidence or psyche, but I don’t doubt the desire. To put the team first shows a desire to win, and a desire to win shows a desire to not let the team down with poor play. As a fan, I admire Lowery for the selfless comment and I could never bash a player for wanting to win, regardless of their role and in what capacity they contribute on the field. Don’t hold the Colts game against him. In addition to losing Greene and having TJ burn out, the whole defense with the exception of Revis played poorly, from Rhodes to Scott to DREW COLEMAN (who shouldn’t even BE in the NFL judging on skill).
-
-
Lowery in the slot would be terrible. Hes not quick enough to handle the slot type WR’s and routes. In fact- Drew Coleman would be a better option.
-
Peyton Manning would agree with that. He, Garcon, and Collie would unite in an awfully haughty laugh.

It seems like Revis can learn something from Lowery about being a team player. I’ve always liked Lowery and i think he can do good in Rex’s system but it might be easier for Wilson to play corner and let lowery play the nickle DB because wilson played CB in college.
-
If I didn’t know Lowery’s age I’d think he was a 10 year vet .. If you think Lowery is scared, that’s crazy talk .. He’s been puttin in work since his rookie year .. Yea Peyton chopped him up but when my cousin & I discuss that game we never ever blame Lowery .. Dude tried his best & got cooked but he never backed down, let’s hope he’s learned from that experience .. He’s not the best CB but he’s a gamer .. Cro, Kdub, Lowery .. I’m ready ..
-
amen
-
Exactly. Players go against other players that are either quicker or stronger than them EVERY Game Unfortunately for Lowery Garcon was Faster and Stronger and Peyton Found Him Every Time He Was Open.
Lowery Is Still A Solid Player, He Can Have Confidence In Himself And Be Realistic.

Go with Cromartie and Wilson at the corners!!!!!!!!
Screw Revis! We paid Gholston to sit around,
I would lock Revis up for the extent of his Hold out contract when he was a rookie!
I want to win CHAMPOINSHIPSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
Not be a 1 and out team with the highest paid Corner in the league who lost his desire after a few years.
Sign Mangold and Harris this year, Lock up the rest and let Revis sit the next few years out!
My ass its about guaranteed money!
OH Yeah Play Lowery in the Nickle package now!
Glass half Full!

off topic….David Clowney to Revis:
@Revis24 Homeboy Come on back 2 practice so we can win this Super Bowl I’ll hook U up wit half my check. Not much but itll hold U down 4 now
-
It’s funny but true .. Clowney has fast become one of my favorite players (he does crazy charity work) & I think he really would give up half his check .. But screw Mevis keep your money .. Let’s play with the player we have ..
-
” mevis “, great nickname….so reminiscent of meshawn.
WHo knows what really going on behind the scenes, but we will be fine without him. beter with him but not the end of the world. With the potential better pass rush, he’ll be missed less than he would have been last year.
-
-
Was that really from the Clown?
-
-
Lowery might not be the best, but with Diva Island missing bottom line Lowery and Wilson gotta step up. Maybe this is a gift in disguise where Wilson just might immediately become a dominant CB sooner than expected, while Lowery’s capabilities will transpire with the extra effort.
Glass is Empty because I drank all the Green Kool Aid!
-
if only Dwight was as talented as he is selfless.
-
The coaches get paid to decide who should play when and why. I think Rex and Dennis Thurman have a pretty good grasp on what they want to see as far as the development of the secondary. Lowery’s got other things to be concerned with. He’s a cornerback, not a consultant. He should be spending all of his time and energy preparing himself to play when the coaches call upon him (whether as a starter or in any other role). He’s wasting his time if he’s thinking about anything else. The fact that he’s even having this discussion seems pretty odd to me.
-
Lowery has been there, Kdub hasn’t .. Mevis is a chump & will holdout, so Lowery wants the rookie to get experience .. Got it ?
-
Nothing more, nothing less!

the big play the colts had was that over the top pass before the end of the first half if rhodes would of knock the crap out of him it probally would have been diferent and 2 missed fgs is what beat us in that game and shoone greene getting hurt bart scott and harris was hurt and we still almost beat them .this team upgrade in defense andf offense makes us better.without revis cromartie is just as good.
-
if VG get going and jt and pace who cares about the sec.less pressure on them
-
Excuse my ignorance here, but if we have Revis signed for 3 more years…could we essentially keep him out of the NFL for three years? It’s not that I think this is probable or that it would be smart, but is this leverage for the Jets in this situation? I mean he has 3 years left, and there is no way Revis would sit out for 3 years. So, is it, you can sit for 3 years, or you can compromise? I also think our start to the year will give leverage one way or the other…if 3-3 I bet Woody caves…if 5-1, well, we’ll see you next year #24.
-
I believe that Revis can void his deal at the end of this year because all his incentives were reached already. The Jets then have the opportunity to buy back the final two years at 20 million guaranteed, which with the rate this is going, I don’t think will happen. This would essentially make Revis an RFA (meaning that another team could sign him to the money he wants but they’d have to give us a 1st and 3rd round pick, which in my opinion isn’t enough compensation). The Jets however, would have the opportunity to match whatever offer he is given. Plus you have the possibility of a lock out. It’s a very sticky situation and both sides know it. Each side has their own leverage and is trying to out leverage the other side, which is why this is such a stalemate.

Nicely put, Jim.
As is said about every lousy affair, “It’s complicated!”

-
The real question is, what team out there has a good CB and a little money that wants to trade that guy, and multiple other players for Greedis?
Trade him now for another corner and some depth and we will be in awsome shape for THIS year.
We can’t let Drew C get on the field under ANY circumstance…and i would like to upgrade over Lowery in the slot (although i like him and will accept him there if necessary).
-
Wislon is 2 feet tall…we’re gonna be up against brandon marshall and randy moss twice…please dont start wilson, please.
-
Do you not realize that Antonio Cromartie is huge and has a NBA PF’s wingspan and is more athletic than both of those guys?
-
If his head’s where it needs to be, he is capable of greatness. He’s one of the best ATHLETES in the entire NFL. You don’t sit out your final year of college with an injury and still get drafted in the 1st round unless you have tremendous raw talent and decent skill (which he undeniably does).
-
-
-
Trading Revis is the dumbest idea ever. We’re not even 1/2 of the same defense without him guys. I think some of you guys have lost your mind. It would be like the Ravens trading Ray Lewis in his prime…
I’m sorry but it’s true. Once in a decade type player.
-
Im sorry guys I might be wrong but in my opinion this trade talk needs to stop. How can you guys ask for REVIS (correct spelling) to be traded? I understand the guy is holding out, I understand he held out for his rookie deal that he’s not honoring anymore, who’s to say that he goes out there and during training camp or preseason breaks his leg or arm or whatever. Doesn’t he have the right to protect himself in this situation? The Jets have already show what they will do to you if you get hurt they are going to trade you away just like any other NFL team, there is no loyalty to a player that cant perform for you. His teammates understand I don’t know if Bart was joking when he said this but he said if he was in the same situation and was the same caliber of player as Revis he would hold out to if it was in his best interest. I might be wrong but its just how I feel right now.
As for Lowery stand up team first guy!
-
-
Mevis could learn alot from Lowery about the team aspect over selfish gain.
-
We should all start saying Revis is scared to face Marshall that’s why he’s holding out.
-
I don’t understand why many Jets fans are so critical of Lowery. He doesn’t have elite physical tools, but he has great ball skills, is a tough tackler, and has exceeded expectations at every opportunity, dating back to starting as a rookie.
If I remember correctly, Lowery was clearly injured during the AFC Championship game. Strickland left the game hurt, Sheppard was useless, and Drew Coleman was still Drew Coleman, meaning Lowery was on the field out of necessity, toughing it out but clearly less than 100%.
-
Cont. And hopefully he would do anything to come back.
-
Can everyone chill with the Mevis and the Greedis and the trade talk. This guy is the best position player in the league. When was the last time the Jets had a player of his caliber? I’ve been following the Jets for 25 years and I don’t remember one. You can’t believe everything thats in the media. The Jets are putting things out to try and get the upper hand, Revis’ camp is putting out stuff to try and get the upper hand. None of us know what is true and what is rumor. We DO all know that Revis was going to be severly underpaid this year. He would have been the 8th highest paid player in his own secondary. Imagine in your job doing the work of a CEO and getting paid like an intern. You’d be pissed too. All the players on the team aren’t against Revis trying to get his money, why should us fans be? Let’s all take a step back here and think before you type in anger.
-
Since when is QB not a “position”? This isn’t baseball.
And people are rightfully upset that a 25 year old who has already earned $15 million on a front-loaded deal is now holding out because he needs to “support his family”. Since most fans won’t earn even $1 million in their lives and will support a family anyway, this does not resonate with the blue-collar fans.
Fans are rightfully upset at Revis’ actions, as they’re taking away from the team and can be viewed by some as “selfish”.
-
Agreed ..
-
So in your arguement “blue collar fans” can be upset with every athlete because they all make more money than we will in a lifetime? Give me a break. The family line was a weak one but it still doesnt change the fact that he was to be grossly underpaid this year.
-
-
Completely agree. Well-put.
-
-
Jim, are you reading the posts? We are dealing with contract language here, not media hype.
-
Really? Where has the exact contract offered or proposed been posted to this site? If it has been then I missed that post.
-
billvv,
“We are dealing with contract language here [that we have never seen and know absolutely nothing about], not media hype.”
Just helpin’ you out here, brother.

-
I woulda thought that one through Jim, I couldn’t disagree anymore.
-
I couldn’t care less if you agree or not. Trading Revis would be stupid, bottom line. He’s a once in a lifetime player. I know I’m in the minority on this site in my opinion but when he eventually signs and helps us win the SB, will you all be crying that he’s selfish? The guy deserves the money.
-
Welcome to the party, Jim.
Keep the faith.
Perhaps there is growing pressure to grab a torch and join the mob, but there are many here who still enjoy reason.
While many here scream and proudly wipe their butts with their very expensive DR jerseys to make a point of some kind, some of us (on both sides) are trying to keep our heads on straight to follow the business of it all. And still have a team left when this is all over.
-
Ironically I’ve been telling my friend for the past year to buy a Sanchez jersey as he was considering a Revis jersey. He went on a trip to the big city. Hopefully he made the right choice. With zero regard to this situation, I think Mark will be a very good QB for us and we at least know he has a good head on his shoulders. Plus (with VERY few exceptions, with the 2000 Ravens being the only no-brainer) a QB has way more influence over a team’s success than a CB does.
-
Plus a CB is more likely to be traded in his prime, i.e. Champ Bailey. Name the last established franchise QB to be traded in their prime. Granted Sanchez has a ways to go, but if he reaches that point, a #6 green and white jersey will be a much better investment than a #24 jersey, and that’s without mentioning the holdout.
I’m also partial to Sanchez because I live in CA, am a USC fan, and saw him play against my high school in the CIFs at Angel Stadium in 04 (Mission Viejo vs. Valencia *watch for Shane Vereen*)

I’m with you Jim. I especially see why this has dragged on so long. For Revis, it really came down to how he saw the Faneca, Jones, and Washington treatment from the Jets front office. It seems that the company culture is that he can an injury away from being expendable as bad as that sounds.
I personally think Revis SHOULD milk the organization, but at the same time, a compromise needs to be made at some point. And I think it will be. Revis is so good that he could sign his contract the night before Monday Night Football and still just be as dominant.
Trade talk is absurd. I believe Tannebaum agrees with me on that.

Folks here are also missing the fact that Lowery is moving to S, where he’ll be something of a ‘tweener. More CB than most S are, and a CB who’s playing more of a S spot with all that vision ahead of him, which is where he excels.
His touting Wilson for Cro’s RCB spot while Cro cover for DR, is also designed to help keep himself in the spot that he feels best suits his game.
Wise as he is selfless.

That’s pretty stand-up of Lowery. However, if any one watched the AFC Championship game, they’d understand why people in South Florida refer to him as Dwight Lousy.
