This whole “Rex Cursed on HBO!!!” thing is getting to the point of sheer insanity. Congratulations, as we’ve now hit the coveted third layer of echo chamber discussion on the topic.
In case you are joining us late: Rex cursed on HBO, on a TV show, directly after a show about insipid pansexual vampirism. Then Tony Dungy didn’t approve, and now Rex’s dad is cracking back on Dungy and the media going bannonkers (bananas + bonkers … thanks, Fitzy) with the whole thing.
“I don’t think he applied for a job with what’s his name, either,” the 76-year-old former Eagles coach told 97.5 The Fanatic radio in Philadelphia.
Rex Ryan has drawn criticism for his use of profanity in last week’s premiere of HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” which unveils episode two tonight. Asked about Dungy’s idea that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell should tell Rex to tone it down, Buddy replied, “It’s none of Dungy’s business.
“The commissioner can do anything he wants to and I think he’ll take the appropriate action,” Buddy said. “I think it’s being blown way out of perspective.”
Besides, Buddy said Rex already heard from the ultimate judge.
“I read in the paper that his mother said he needed his mouth washed out with soap, so I thought that covered it pretty good,” Buddy said.
It’s football. These are grown men. Do we really need to belabor this point?
And if I watch Hard Knocks tonight and hear bleeps or cut audio where curses should be … I’m going to be —-ing some —- up.

Yeah, Dungy is all about choir boys like Michael Vick.
-
Yup… and bigotry.
Let us never forget that Tony Dungy is a bigot.
-
-
Can we talk about how overrated Dungy was as a coach? I mean, I always felt that way but never really had a reason to rip into the guy. Lets face it – the Bucs stalled in the playoffs because of him, and the Colts won a SB despite him.
-
Seriously, Manning ran the offense, probably spoke over him during meetings, so what does that leave? Their vaulted defense? Dungy is nothing. And between him and Rodney Harrison, it makes me want to puke in my mouth. And then when Peter King and douchey Olbermann make it on-screen… I’m done.
-
Rodney Harrison king of the DBags

I am so happy you wrote what you did. He has got to be one of the most overrated coaches in NFL histroy. He rode on Monte Kiffin’s back and their upsurdly good defense for 5 years in TB and did nothing to fix the offense which held them back year after year. Then he goes to Indy, lauded the whole time as this great defensive mind, and is handed an offense that should have won multiple Super Bowls under his watch and he can’t put a defense together that can hold a lead. So he finally wins ONE super bowl in 7 years with an offensive juggernaut and retires and we are supposed to believe that he is this great man, great coach…give me a break.

-
Hopefully Buddy punches him in the face and tells him to shut the f#ck up.
-
Define irony – refraining from cursing to a blog post about…. cursing.
TD ‘managed’ his team to a super bowl. His Tampa 2 wasn’t scheming anyone outta their boots, and he left the offense to Peyton. What worked for him will not work for us. This is New York City, not the effing mid-west.
And I quote Homer Simpson: I like my beer cold, my tv loud, and my homosexuals FLAMING!
Keep backing that dog killer. Tell Jesus I said what up.
I’d rather talk about Favre at this point.
Scratch that. -
You have to love an overated coack like dungy commenting on rex ryans foul language. This man backed a piece of garbage dog killer. Did everything he could to get this criminal back in the league. The only difference between him and herm is he had peyton manning to do his job.Dungy should go buy a church put on a robe and tell evreyone how to live. Remember you can kill defenseless animals just dont use the fbomb while doing it.
-
Is it even a question that NBC has THE WORST football coverage of any network?
-
You can build a mosque next to the old WTC but you can’t curse on HBO at 10pm, while 6 channels away on Skinemax there is soft porn at the same time. I respect Dungy but STFU. Maybe if Rex had Mainning as QB he wouldn’t have to curse as much.
-
Great point. Also there is a rating on this program.
-
-
As is the case with most objections to free speech, Dungy should simply change the channel. Maybe he can watch a show that argues against teaching evolution to children.
-
Dungy would take Michael vick on his team, but not hire Rex Ryan? The guy’s a bit of a hypocrite..
I really enjoyed Hard Knocks, and am looking forward to it again tonight! but in all honesty, Rex *could* tone down the cursing a bit. He wasn’t really doing it for emphasis, or during a fiery speech, but just in normal conversation. But I think people are missing the point of what hard knocks is..its an inside look at training camp! And from all accounts, Rex isn’t curing for the cameras, its just how he is.
-
Yea hopefully Dungy didn’t tune in 5 minutes early to catch the bloody vampires having sex on true blood. That would have really burned him up.
-
Dungy absolutely was not an overrated coach and was pretty instrumental in the development of the Colts and Manning’s success as a up and coming QB.
That being said, I agree with everything else that was said on this board. Pumped for Hardknocks tonight!
-
Its ok to have a murderer on his team (Harrison), and to mentor a dog killer (vick), but Rex can’t coach his team because Rex cursed?!?!??? And we take Dungy seriously???
-
funny how Scott calling Sanchez a “Nacho” isn’t talked about….I wonder what would’ve happened if Sanchez would’ve called Scott “Fried Chicken”……..things that make you go hmmmmm……
-
Or Kris Jenkins letting curses fly after the goal line drill.
-
it was pretty obvious it was friendly joking around..i doubt sanchez saying that would have been a big deal.
now if woody johnson said it, THEN it would be a big deal. lol.
-
-
>.funny how Scott calling Sanchez a “Nacho” isn’t talked about….I wonder what would’ve happened if Sanchez would’ve called Scott “Fried Chicken”
Before reading in any racisim, I would ask both those players. It wouldn’t surprise me if players of differnet nationalities who are friends have “playful names” for each other.
Personally, I would try to reduce the number of F-bombs if I were Rex, but I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it. Dungy looks like a wuss to me. If it really bothered him a simple statement like “I think a coach can be effective while not using profanity. I don’t think it helps get the mesage across , and it makes you look bad”.
-
someone PLEEEEEEEEEEASE send the DUNG man a copy of a KSK article
-
Guys, what the hell??? We all want the real Jets to be shown on HBO. Why do you want a PG13 version for the cameras….that wouldn’t be them.
The speach was behind closed doors but from the players reaction Rex’s inspirational speach the night before the AFC championship game was LOADED with curses. Why the F (pun intended) should Rex and team try not to curse in front of the cameras?
Continue to be real!!!! And F the wussification of the United States.
Lead the team in ****ing wins!!!!!
-
……Meant league
-
First of all, this is the very reason why this show is on HBO and not ESPN or say NFLN.. because it’s a more raw, more honest look at the inner workings of an NFL team preparing for the season..
Second, it’s an NFL team with grown men.. Not a HS football camp, not college or HS kids, or pee wees, or a church league..
Third: The show is called, “hard knocks”.. Not “picking pussy-willows with Rex, Mike and Woody”
Excuse me while i hunt down some George Carlin videos on YouTube to hold me over before tonight’s Hard Knocks.. Tony, go away please.
-
“Picking Pussy Willows with Rex, Mike and Woody.” Classic. And F**K is not a curse word Tony, it’s a religous based acronym for: For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Maybe Tony should worry about keeping his own house in order before telling the neighbors how to live their lives.
-
-
i dont understand who appointed Dungy as the potty-mouth police. maybe Dungy should have spent more time connecting and mentoring his players (i.e. Marvin Harrison). i think Rex has a connection with his players that Dungy never had.
also, as a coach, Dungy has to be right up there with the worst big game coaches in NFL history. to be a so-called defensive mastermind and be handed perhaps the greatest QB to play the game and only win 1 championship, is actually pretty pathetic in my mind
-
the f word goes with everything, and it sounds good to people when expressing anger .As for dungy he needs to focus on his life and not at others we all are responsible for our actions .according to the parables its state do not judge no one but yourself.but like most Christian hypocrite .they prefer to change others than themselves.thats why for 500 years we have been confused about how to live our lives. And if jesus came back he be the first one saying kill him hes the devil.
-
“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone”
-
-
Tony Dungy gets that done in the missionary position only.
-
I don’t agree with dungy but to say was overrated as a coach is silly, especially since the colts defense was what carried them in the playoffs the year they won it all. the NFL is a qb driven league so if dungy wasn’t a good coach then neither is bellichick.
-
It’s not that he is overrated because he had a great QB, it’s because he had a great QB and as a “defensive architect” didn’t consistently over the 7 years he was there give the offense the defensive support to complement.
The Colts D did get hot through the first 2 rounds of the playoffs, but they were manhandled by the Pats in the AFC Championship game and the offense had to come back and win that game for them after being down 21-3. And I will speak nothing of the regular season where they couldn’t stop a nose bleed, as Rex would say, and the offense carried them to a division title.

-
dungy I KNOw you want to say it go ahead FFFFFFFFFUuuuuuuuuuuuu
-
dungy is just mad he cant curse .but anyway the jets have brought on a lot of haters this reminds me of the 86 mets i just hope the jets could do the same win a championship and dominate .
-
“Will Smith don’t gotta cuss in his raps to sell his records;
well I do, so f@#& him and f@#& you too!”-
haha, nicely done Em

-
dungy backs harrison and vick because they are black…Rex is white….it’s as clear as black and white…so dungy shut the **** up…
-
……hmm, so I guess it’s safe to say that you guys are pretty upset huh?lol….. I think some of you need to back away from the red button just a tad, from what I remember back when he retired guys were saying the total opposite on the open thread. The man just voiced his opinion….. Case closed. Everybody doesn’t have to agree with Rex’s methods, regardless of what ties he has to other peolple……so bringing up Harrison and vick is really petty. U can’t hold him wanting to rehabilitate someone against him, it’s not that serious fellas
-
I agree with you but you also have to understand WE LOVE REX RYAN .plus he is doing more than voicing his opinion ,he is trying to get the nfl comm. to shut him up .and thats why we are voicing ours .For years nobody respected the jets, know rex has come in and not only pumped up the team but also the fans ,and we really have not won anything yet.but our hope is a lot higher then in the past. So leave our rex alone.right know he’s bigger then!! well you know what i mean.

Was that colts superbowl team even dungy’s? it seemed to me that Manning did more coaching work then any coach on that whole team. As long as Peyton is on that team you dont need a offensive coordinator or a head coach to coach the offense for that matter. Rex’s personality is what works best for the NYJ and surprisingly enough brings this team together (something coaches have failed to do in the past). So Dungy, leave Rex the **** alone.
-
I think the real issue here isnt how good of a coach he was, but the fact that he wouldnt hire someone who curses. He supported Vick. I’m not against someone that goes to prison and deserving a 2nd chance… depending on the crime. This guy tortured dogs. Im a dog owner and if your conscience doesnt tell to that electrocuting or hanging a dog is wrong then no one cant explain that to you. I think Vick was more sorry that he got caught then what he did.
So for Dungy to vouch for Vick and say he’s now a model citizen and deserves a right to play in the NFL, but Ryan is not good for the NFL because he curses is hypocritical. BOOYAH!!!
-
rex has awoken a sleeping jet fan base we will protect him all the way to the end.at least I know i will .ny jets back up your f coach ,and beat the f out of every team .all of you jets get motivated on the stupid comment, by whats his name ?,no 27 of the giants. all the teams you play are going to diss you .so play like every game is the SB and if revis dont come back fk him to.
-
I didn’t really catch the full context in what dingy had said…. But from the way your making it sound is that he wants Rex banned from the NFL or something lol ….. Which I doubt is the case, so again… Him wanting to help vick get his life back and not be condmened for the rest of his life for 1 mistake is still ridiculous to bring up…….the man just doesn’t favor cursing lol. No ones being condemned here
-
I love Rex just as much as anybody else but it’s not a far gone conclusion that the man talks like a sailor, do I have a problem with it… No. Would someone with kids who are die hard jet fans have a problem…. Probably lol. U can monitor only so much, so kids will do what they want……. Including catch an episode of hard knocks on hbo. There are tons of jet fans who could have been offended by rex’s mouth who probably share tony’s views, that’s all. But whatever makes these guys motivated works for me, I just wanna pay attention to that win column. Lol
-
Listen your kids are going to use those bad words once they hear them anyway, whether it’s 8, 13…once one kid figures it out they all do. I supervised 8 year old kids and they talked just like Rex Ryan. Plus its censored before 10 :00 anyway. Not to mention the show replays right after the 10 o’clock episode. If you’re that concerned about your kids watch it at 11.
What’s my point? If your kids are hearing the uncensored version then your a stupid parent, and your kids have hear all those words every single day in school so stop being such a whiny b****
-
-
“No Michael,we don’t curse.Kill that FREAKING dog..no need for f-bombs”
-
Noones whining dirty, so just take two steps back from the ledge kid. Just making a statement within reason and btw ……. Your first statement is as ignorant as they come

Classy response by Rex:
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2010/08/rex_ryan_thinks_tony_dungy_unf.html -
im sick of this kids bull**** i got 3 adults i raised almost the way rex talks to his team guess what my daughter is 26 and no kids in college working on a law degree no drinking or drugging a son in college also my third married and happy no problems you know what i raised my kids not the nobody can do nothing to you is how you train your kids what counts the only thing that hurts my oldest played football at green run high school with plaxaco buress but the coach said he wasnt good enough or maybe when i went crazy when they took him out of a game
-
I lost a lot of respect for Dungy over his statements. It seemed personal and way over-the-top. He actually said that if he were a GM that he would never hire Rex AND that Goodell should look into and reprimand Rex over his cursing on “Hard Knocks.” He came to these harsh conclusions while NEVER WATCHING THE ACTUAL FOOTAGE!!!! First, why single out Rex for cursing? Nearly ever coach on previous seasons of “Hard Knocks” cursed. Second, he really would never hire a guy who in one season turned around an average defensive team to the NFL’s no.1 defense by a wide margin? In his first year as a head coach? A guy who made the AFC Championship game in his first season and with a rookie QB? All this because he curses?!? His players heard more cursing playing “Grand Theft Auto” or listening to hip-hop as teenagers. That was just an incredibly ignorant statement. But, even worse is his suggestion that the NFL Commissioner should reprimand Rex after Rex and the Jets did the NFL a huge favor by being on “Hard Knocks” in the first place. However, the real kicker is that Dungy, the self-professed conscious of the NFL who has forgiven Michael Vick, jumped to all of these conclusions without seeing the footage or manning up and telling Rex to his face. I wish Dungy had the balls to coach again in the NFL, preferably in the AFC East. He’s just an ignorant hypocrite who should follow the sage advice of Abraham Lincoln:
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.

I like Dungy but this is all just silly. Maybe Dungy and Herm can start a football academy for choir boys.
