Final Score: New York Jets 9 Carolina Panthers 3

by Bent on August 21st, 2010 at 11:21 pm

The Jets got their first win of the preseason with a scrappy 9-3 win over the Carolina Panthers, who were undone by terrible special teams play, as both offenses failed to get anything going.

Here were the main talking points:

- Ropati Pitoitua appeared to hurt his ankle pretty badly in the first half. UPDATE: It’s a torn Achilles and he’s probably out for the year.
- Jim Leonhard intercepted an overthrown pass by Matt Moore on Carolina’s first drive and later added a sack
- D’Brickashaw Ferguson gave up a sack in the first quarter on an inside move by Everette Brown, then Brown got another, beating Hartsock and Tomlinson
- LaDainian Tomlinson looked good busting for a 20 yard run on 3rd and 13
- Mark Sanchez almost threw a pick on the Jets first drive and the Jets second drive and ended up with 12 yards passing on 10 pass attempts
- Lance Laury and David Clowney each recovered a muffed punt
- Jerricho Cotchery had a nice third down conversion
- Nick Folk nailed a 43 yard Field Goal and a 34 yarder in the first half then hit a 49 yarder in the fourth quarter
- The Jets went backwards in the redzone on their fourth drive, with Greene and Tomlinson (on a pass) tackled for losses
- The teams combined for just 112 yards (less than 2 per play), 9 punts and just 5 first downs in the first half, as the Jets led 6-0. 26 of Carolina’s yards came on one play.
- Dwight Lowery broke up a pass in the first quarter and two more in the second quarter, although he did have a few struggles against Dwayne Jarrett later on.
- The starters exited early in the second quarter and the second string offense led by Mark Brunell looked awful
- The second string defense looked a lot better, with Westerman picking up a sack and Gholston making an immediate disruptive impact, which I’m sure I’ll be asked to break down on BGA later this week. He also led the team in tackles
- Kellen Clemens started the second half and was slightly better than Brunell and Sanchez, completing a nice throw down the seam to Jeff Cumberland and going 4-for-6 for 32 yards
- Joe McKnight struggled early, then finally had a nice first down run, only to lose a fumble that set up a third quarter field goal to make it 6-3. He did bounce back, with a spectacular 67 yard punt return, but almost fumbled after that play too
- Chauncey Washington had a big hit on punt coverage to force a fumble after Steve Weatherford was forced to punt from his endzone following two Panthers sacks. Danny Woodhead recovered the fumble and Washington also looked strong running the football, but then lost a fumble inside the ten
- Vladimir Ducasse blocked the wrong guy early in the fourth quarter, leading to the fifth Panthers sack
- Kenwin Cummings again had an active game with a couple of big hits, but did miss a tackle leading to a long run on third and long
- Ty Steinkuhler flashed with a batted down pass at the line and a tackle in the backfield and Matt Kroul had a late sack.
- Kevin O’Connell entered the game with the third stringers up 9-3 with 9 minutes left but didn’t complete a pass, as the Jets had just 16 passing yards
- Drew Coleman had a leaping interception with under two minutes to go and Mike DeVito had a last minute sack to clinch the win

Does anyone know how to contact the NFL people to tell them there stats must be wrong as according to them someone called V Gholston led the team in tackles which cant possibly be right?

  2. avatar Ghost On says:

    It’s happening. Ghost…On…

    >>Gholston making an immediate disruptive impact, which I’m sure I’ll be asked to break down on BGA later this week

You! I want to hear about it.

I was really scared by Folk, but after this game I am much more relaxed. Maybe he will regain his old form and the jets will pick up a good kicker for free.

The 2nd team defensive backs were a lot better this game.

The Jets Olines gave up a bunch of sacks.

Some mis-communication in the defense out there, and O line. I thought the Jets were going to stop them early when the Panthers converted on third down.
    Was that Comartie? Someone else?

Cromartie made a number of tackles.

Daily News The Jets Stream just tweeted that Ropati Pitoitua tore his achilles and is out for the year.

    • avatar NamVetJet says:

      He will be missed.

    • avatar cmart28 says:

Fairly sizable blow. I don’t think they can go in with just Ellis, Pouha, Jenkins, and DeVito. I guess Wright has a spot now.

      • avatar Bent says:

I don’t think so. He’s been working mainly with the threes and hasn’t had any impact whatsoever as far as I can recall. Kroul probably has a roster spot secured now and don’t forget Gholston. The other defensive lineman (if they carry seven, which they didn’t last year) may not be on the team yet.

        • avatar Randy says:

Just going to say that.Gholston has looked impressive and this creates an opening for more playing time.

Im under the impression that Devito will not be starting opposite Ellis though.Devito was playing a lot yesterday with the 2nd team and this makes me wonder if they are planning on starting Ellis and Gholston at DE and have Pouha and DeVito back the D-Line up.

          • avatar Bent says:

Maybe Pouha starts. He’s that good and would be interchangeable with Jenks.

Ellis AND Gholston is way too lightweight unless they’re going to be either end of a four man front.

  5. avatar NamVetJet says:

D and Special Teams played good football, the Offense not so good. Glad to see Gholston have a good game. I think he has improved a heck of a lot—he might be a very pleasent suprise this year.

  6. avatar Bent says:

I don’t know whether he’ll have any impact during the season, but he was defintely good tonight. His first series of the game (possibly against starters) was the best series of his career, four good plays in a row (and then he had a tackle for loss on the next drive).

  7. avatar Bent says:

Although the backup DBs were way better tonight, perhaps the Jets should just sign whoever the Steelers cut because they held Victor Cruz to 30 yards on two catches tonight.

  8. avatar nyckage says:

That was a horrible game, And I Hope Everette Brown makes the Pro Bowl because Brick got his ass beat, by a a Rookie whom the Jets had so many chances to draft, even late in the Draft.

    • avatar njdpelc says:

Brick got beat by him once…? He beat hartstock once too. Not as good as you think.

    • avatar Bent says:

Kage – Do you have him mixed up with Eversen Griffen? Brown was a second round pick last year and is in his second season.

Brick just got beat the once by that inside move that he gets caught by about once every ten games and then remembers not to let it happen again for the next few months. Hopefully, anyway.

The second sack was nothing to do with Brick, who was correctly blocking a defensive tackle on that particular play.

  9. avatar Bkwrxwgn says:

Oh man I hope the O just needed to get the kinks out, it was not pretty at all. Is it wrong to expect the Jets to steam roll over teams even during preseason?

  10. avatar Merc20 says:

Hard to believe they charge full price for that. Absolutely brutal.

    • avatar Bent says:

      I love a good 9-3, personally!

Both teams played very sloppily though.

      • avatar Merc20 says:

That’s more what I was referencing. Hard to watch a game with no TDs scored. I love defense, LOVE defense. But I’m selfish and want my offense to score :p

Not panicked or anything but would like to see a forward pass completed every few drives. This is 2010 not 1910.

  11. avatar karl hungus says:

I wonder if they will call around for another backup qb….brunell is done……

    • avatar Merc20 says:

Yeah and O’Connell can carry his bags out to the car. What did their scouts see in him?

    • avatar njdpelc says:

They are relying on brunel to mentor. Not so much play. If he has the first offense in front of him im sure he’ll do fine. He is with the back ups you need to remember. If he has to go in during a game (knock on wood) he’ll have a better supporting cast.

  12. avatar Eric says:

Brunell and McKnight are this year’s mistakes. Not sure about Jason Taylor or Ducasse (in the short term) either. But, what really bothers me is how poorly Sanchez played after looking so good last week. Will he throw away a few games again this year.

    • avatar njdpelc says:

Brunel is here to mentor. And you’re jumping the gun on mcknight who hasn’t played with the 1st line yet. Give him a shot. Same thiing with brunel. You’ve only seen them with a s***ty o line.

    • avatar Shamik says:

Yeah, he probably will. At least one or two. But thats to be expected. Anyone who thinks that a 2nd year QB, especially one as young as Sanchez is suddenly at the level of Brees, Manning, or Brady is delusional.

  13. avatar Brad says:

    Key Battles:

CB- With hopefully Revis coming back at some point- Cole or Coleman for the 5th spot- I’m leaning towards Cole more on default of Coleman, who has had many years of opportunity to only disappoint.

RB- Woodhead or Chauncey Washington- Even though Washington fumbled, i liked his aggressive pounding physical style- and with question marks about the durability of Greene and LT- I would prefer a more true pounder than a scat back in Woodhead.

ILB- Besides Cummings, not sure who else is battling, maybe Laury. Not sure if Westerman is even considered ILB anymore. Think Westerman and Cummings are pretty safe and Laury is on the bubble.

WR- Coles, Clowney, Allison- Really havent seen much out of Clowney- mainly deep threat only, Coles still looks good- proven vet., Allison is a more complete WR than Clowney. 2 of the 3 should make the team til Holmes comes back.

  14. avatar Brad says:

McKnight- I really thought he had a much better game than last week. One thing was for sure this week, he was aggressive, running straight up the middle mostly and when their was an opening he got some good positive yards. The Fumble didnt look like a fumble, but there just wasnt good enough video evidence to overturn it. The play reminded me of Leons BS called fumble last year where he was down on the ground and he let the other team rip the ball out- refs didnt see play was dead, called it a fumble, video couldnt overturn it.

  15. avatar g.JETSon says:

he had Holmes and coles, that’s better than a third of the leagues starting WRs. He’s done! Kellen knows the system better and has a better arm. Keep Brunell as #3 to mentor Sanchez but kellen is the best option for #2 QB

    • avatar Ben Nevis says:

Never thought I’d be saying this after watching him last season, but I agree: Clemens is the second best QB on the team now. KC far outplayed both Brunell and O’Connell tonight.

And Clemens was even better against the Giants.

Brunell & O’Connell have been stinking it up big time this preseason.

Right now, Brad Smith is the third best QB on this team.

  16. avatar Shamik says:

Man, season ending injuries to Revis and Pitoitua. Good thing this D has some depth to it!

  17. avatar JetSetRadio says:

alan faneca may have been rated the worst offensive lineman in the nfl but who cares i just felt a sense of security when he was in there.. slauson looked alright but idk if i can trust him hopefully brick and mangold aren’t affected negatively because of it.. not re signing faneca is the only deal i hated this off season but they still have to play the games so we will see… ducasse and mcknight looked terrible and so did mark sanchez i hope hard knocks isnt getting to his head.

    • avatar njdpelc says:

We cut faneca, we didn’t just not resign him but it was a move for the future. The more the line plays together the better they’ll get. Im not worried. They’ll have there mess ups for a little here and there but it’ll get all worked out.

  18. avatar Brad says:

Major concern- if our offense looks that inept against Carolina, what is it going to look like against the Ravens?

    • avatar TOON2388 says:

Brad – definitely a concern – not because it is Carolina but because they did not pick up where they left off last week and you cannot be inconsistent from week to week.

On the other hand, YES it was only Carolina, but the D needs to have the “ok, O is lost, we need to shut them out.”

Last season, the D, despite being #1, cracked too many times when the O was awful AND the 1st Miami game when the O did everything to bail them out.

    • avatar R in CT says:

I would point out that the first offense only played 1 quarter and some change and did manage to score. Hardly enough time to get into a rhythm, especially without much of a gameplan.

Now if they had played 4 quarters and only put up 9 on Carolina, I would be very concerned. Otherwise, it’s just the 2nd preseason game. Next week will be a better gauge.

  19. What a rotten game. Made the Mets rain delay look thrilling.

My gawd, the Jets stunk. Somehow, they were the better team today. Yechhhh! They pulled this out only because the Panther stunk the whole place up even worse…

Bent cites a number of plays that were noteworthy. That would be “isolated plays.”

This is the kind of game you toss away overall, but that still provided outrageously good ‘teachable moments’ that coaches can ride their team hard with all week…

  20. avatar johnsec.125 says:

    better keep clemens

  21. avatar neauone says:

Preseason doesn’t mean a thing. Granted D’brick allowed a sack among others. Sanchez and co. played a bad first set. But a whole game it does not make. These games are for who they are keeping and who they are letting go. The next few games should be more of the same. I’m confident when the season begins the first team will be ready and the backups will have earned their spots on this team. One last point its good to see VG playing better, maybe we will have the monster we envisioned when we drafted him finally.

  22. avatar billvv says:

Next is Washington here. O line must give Sanchez more time. Routes are not developing in the short time he is given and the check down is all there is time for. All else is forgiven.

  23. avatar Reprocity says:

VG and Clemens stepping up… I picked the wrong day to stop drinking apple juice…

  24. avatar JDB says:

I’m glad guys are making mistakes now. They fix them now when the games mean nothing.

  25. avatar greenie says:

clemens back to no. 2 qb. PLEASE.

  26. avatar C Low says:

Brunell is here for mentoring? Why can’t we just get VINNY in here!!!!! I kid, well, kind of
