On tonight’s game…

We started off a little slow again and hurt ourselves in the redzone. I just missed on the route to Dustin (Keller) and (DeAngelo) Hall kind of fell right into it. It wasn’t a spectacular play on defense other than he caught it. When you miss in the redzone, there are too many people around, so you better be accurate. I just missed him.

On the Jets first drive of the game…

We want to score points in the redzone. When we do get a field goal, it means we have to come back with a touchdown the next drive. I thought we had a great play in that first two-minute drive. It was scripted just like we had in practice – 1:55 on the clock, three timeouts, and we’re on the minus-40. We’re thinking ‘OK, we have a real shot to get a field goal, if not a touchdown.’ We turned the ball over and Santonio (Holmes) felt bad about it. He’ll hang onto the ball and we’ll be fine and get some points.

On whether the Jets turnovers are alarming…

They’re never good. Whether its preseason, playoffs, or the regular season, we can’t have them and we need to take ownership of them. I need to put it right on Dustin’s numbers, right in his hands, and we’ve got to hang onto the ball.

On his interception…

If anything, it was just a poor throw. Dustin was my number one and he was open. I think I just missed him, maybe (by) a ball-length and-a-half or a couple of feet. That doesn’t work.

On the Jets not being sharp…

We’re not overwhelmingly pleased, but I’m glad we got a chance in the second half to come back and put together a nice little drive, play into the fourth (quarter) and score.

On the Jets running backs…

Shonn (Greene) and LT (LaDainian Tomlinson) are a great 1-2 punch, so that’s huge for us. LT definitely has something left in the tank. He’s ready to prove that and we’re excited to play with him.

On converting on third-down…

We were one-for-six at halftime, which is never good. A lot of that was our fault. It wasn’t like these guys were making miraculous plays. Credit them for playing the defenses they were, and being in the right spots, but at the same time, we’ve got to capitalize on that. We need to make plays when we get opportunities.

On the hit he took in the first half…

I just felt kind of weird, but I jumped right up. (It) just didn’t feel great, but that’s part of the game. You’ve got to play. I’m glad I got a taste of that and got a good hit out of the way. Hopefully, there won’t be anymore.

On the Jets redzone offense…

I just missed (Dustin Keller) early on, but I’m glad we got back on the same page. I was ready to throw him the ball quick and he didn’t look, and then the next time, he looked when he wasn’t suppose to look, so we really weren’t in sync. For us to come back and complete three-or-four balls to him on that last drive, that was important. That’s the way it can be with Dustin all the time when we’re on the same page That’s both of us needing to get our chemistry down.

On whether the offense will be ready for the start of the season….

Absolutely. We still have two weeks. We just need to really focus these next couple of weeks, take the positives out of this game, and we really have to find a way to start fast.

On the Jets scoring their first touchdown in 10 quarters…

I think it’s preseason and we need to take it seriously. It doesn’t feel good. It’s not a positive. We need to learn from it, find out why it’s happening, and be more efficient.

On why the offense has been slow the last two weeks…

We just started slow. When you do that, you have to come back and I’m glad we did in the second half. That was encouraging, but it needs to happen sooner. In that two-minute drive, we were just kind of shooting ourselves in the foot. That’s what’s really hurting us. The plays are there, we have the personnel, and now we need to make it happen. We have to put it together.

On the running game…

They look great. That’s something really to be proud of. Both up front and the running backs are looking great. We are very excited about that.

On playing after hitting his shoulder…

I just kind of fell funny when I got tackled. I threw the ball away real quick and just kind of fell on my shoulder. But I got up and they just checked it out real quick to make sure it was OK. It’s fine.

On if there was concern about sitting for two weeks before the regular season opener…

The only good thing about it is that these last two games might not have left the best taste in our mouth as an offense. I think guys are going to be real hungry. When you take away those games, you take away our chance to let out all that energy and stuff that we’ve built up all week. You take that away for a week and a half or two weeks and I think these guys will be hungry. We’ll be just where we want to be.

On if there was overconfidence in the offense…

Any time you don’t play the way you want to, it’s a good reality check. It’s way too early to tell what our identity is on offense. That’s what we need to find these next couple weeks. We need to stick to our run game, get sharper in the passing game, and we need to help our defense out. We need to give them a blow. They get tired out there when we give the ball back. We need to be a lot sharper. That’s what these next two weeks are about. It’s got to happen soon because we are playing against a pretty good opponent.

On if he is unsure about the offense’s identity…

No, I think we just need to reach our potential. We need to be things we say we’re going to be. We have a chance to do that and really focus the next couple of weeks. I’m excited about the group we have. I know the potential is there, we just have to realize it.

On if he thinks the interceptions are reminiscent of last year…

I think I just missed. I think last year I might have been throwing into double coverage. Hall did a good job catching the ball, but I threw it right to him. I just missed Dustin. If he catches it, he might run him over for a touchdown. It’s a just bad throw. It happened. And it just can’t happen in the redzone.

On starting slow…

We just need to come out fast on Monday night when we play our first game. We need to come out faster than we have these last two weeks. And if we stall a little bit, we need to come right back and not let it carry over.

On getting touchdowns in the redzone…

We’re getting those third downs in the redzone and we’re getting field goals. As long as we are getting points, we’ll be OK. But we want to turn those into touchdowns, and that will happen when we don’t turn the ball over.

On LaDainian Tomlinson…

The guy has been unbelievable. Lights-out. We need to get him touches. He’s doing a great job. He’s a great help for Shonn. He converted a third and long again in the redzone when he got on a check down. That’s encouraging. He’s got such great vision and such great feel. He knows when I start moving, he finds an open lane. It’s easy when you have a guy like that.

As I said on a previous thread, it’s time for Rex to ride Sanchez the way he did late last season. Which means putting MS back on the color code system. Which also means reestablishing this Friday night pizza sessions with Rex, Sanchez and Schotty.

What Rex did right late last season was stay on top MS, series after series, game after game, and also between, to force the kid to start thinking more clearly, to force him to think the way Rex would think in game situatuions.

Last season it took Rex a huge chunk of the season to realize that this was necessary. I hope after these first three preseason games, Rex realizes that it’s still necessary, that the kid hasn’t yet matured enough to fly solo. He still needs Rex to be involved in a big way.

If Rex does this, and does it now, I think we’ll start to see Sanchez play the way he did down the stretch and in the playoffs.

    • avatar WW85 says:

I guess I agree somewhat. I think at least for the first half of the season, we need to be the running team that went to the AFC championship game. But at some point, we need to see what Sanchez can do with all the firepower we have. My biggest concern really is Sanchez’ durability. Brunell looks just terrible–well he looks like a coach trying to play. We don’t seem to have any realistic backups. I’d rather have Clemens over Brunell, but neither guy will lead us anywhere anyway.

      • avatar Ben Nevis says:

I agree: Brunell makes Clemens look good, which isn’t easy to do.

As for Rex riding Sanchez, it’s not about keeping the kid from using all the weapons he has at WR & TE & out of the backfield (LT!), it’s about Rex getting inside the kid’s head so that he starts to think like Rex in game situations, so that he starts making better decisions.

Sanchez has shown in these first three preseason games that ge hasn’t matured enough to do this on his own. He needs to have Rex focusing on him to force MS to focus. And Rex needs to realize this now.

    • The more I see MS handle himself now, the more I fear the playoffs last year were more a goalie’s hot hand in the NHL playoffs than any real growth as a QB. Sometimes, you just get hot. Are you that good? No, just hot.

At this point, I honestly feel Mark is a decently talented QB, but a spoiled, immature twerp — which keeps him from growing as a QB. Despite the hype, I see no improvement in his play at all yet this year. You watch how out-of-control he is on the field, how little he focuses, how inaccurate he is, what bad reads he STILL comes up with. When he does focus, he’s fine, like on the TD drive last night and in the playoffs. But he JUST WILL NOT FOCUS. If I’m one of the elders on that team, Jenkins, Scott or TRich, I’m in his face to say grow the hell up since he’s costing every other man in that room a shot at the title.

What I find more galling than that, however, is his post f-up analysis when interviewed. He can calmly, even rationally tell you everything that broke down and what needs to be fixed and how he just needs to do better and all will be fine, AND THEN HE GOES OUT AND DOES THE EXACT SAME G-D THING ALL OVER AGAIN the next time! AND THE TIME AFTER THAT! He simply is not ‘getting it.’

Also, notice the total lack of fire when he’s asked about mistakes. Oh, yeah, it’s cool, we’ll fix that. We need to be better. We just need a quicker start… He’s sounding like Ollie Perez out there, dropping good-sounding bites that are expected of him, but not internalizing the data.

Or he pouts. Right after the pick, he’s on the bench with his head down and his shoulders slumped. The very thing Cav was talking to him about on HK weeks ago while the kid was playing with his bag like a 15-yr.-old girl.

Combine his lack of gravitas on the field with the shoddy play of the OL so far, and he’s gonna be running around looking out his ear hole throwing it god-knows-where.

Very loud bells need to be ringing for Rex and his staff right now. They’ve got to slap this kid upside the head and ride him like Sea Biscuit the whole year, or he’ll scuttle this season all by his lonesome.

This kid needs to stop talking and start walking.

      Fast.

      • avatar Ben Nevis says:

I agree (and said much of the same above—that Sanchez is making bad decisions, that he isn’t focusing—but there’s a big difference between Ollie Perez and Sanchez. For just one example, Ollie can’t be coached. Sanchez can. Rex proved that late last season with his color code and his Friday night pizza sessions with MS, Schotty & RR.

Rex just needs to take the reins again now, stay on top Sanchez the way he did last season, go back to the color code system, and get MS to focus.

If Rex does this, then Sanchez will start playing the way he did down the stretch and in the playoffs.

  2. Mark’s Shoulder Will Be Fine My Worries Are Gone. Just curious as to when Pace will be back.

  3. he still looks like a rookie out there… that’s troublesome to me..

  4. avatar BigLen says:

Ben is right…Rex has to go back to the meetings and staying on top of MS during the game. The kid still doesn’t get it during the game. If Rex works with him more,MS will be fine

  5. Dust off the rainbow wristband for marky mark.

  6. An interception waiting to happen just like last year

  7. avatar Brian says:

In my opinion there is no need to yell Danger just yet. I think MS will be fine when the season starts. The Jets don’t watch any film for these games, it was said by a few players. He is in his 2nd year, he is not going to be Joe Montana or Peyton Manning just yet. Manning struggled his first few years then exploded. The kid will show everyone what he can do this year. I think he is throwing the ball more confidently than last year and its only a matter of time before everything clicks.

Losing Pace yesterday really hurts us for week 1 if he can’t go, but I think he will be ready for the opener. We will be fine and ready to go come 9/13, if we start 0-4 and MS has 8 picks then I’ll be worried.

    • avatar JOEYTHEJET says:

Manning went 3-13 as a rookie and 13-3 in his second season, get your facts straight dude,Taco is making me nervous and the offensive play calling is even worst

    • The kid was 12/20/53.8%/63.0 for the Jets in ’09. Manning as a rookie went from TD/INT of 26/28 and 56.7% comp avg. and passer rating of 71.2 while stinking it up with his team at 3-13 in ’98 to 26/15/62.1%/90.7 with his team 13-3 in ’99 when he went to the Pro Bowl. Montana’s TD/INT was 16/9 in his first two years as a non-starter, then 19/12/63.7%/ in his 3rd yr. (1st as a starter) when his team went 13-3, also, and he went to the Pro Bowl. In those three years, Montana’s ratings went 81.1/87.8/88.4.

So, no, Brian, the kid has a lot of growing up and catching up to do.

  8. avatar Iain says:

Ugh. Let’s save the overreaction for the regular season, shall we?

  9. It would have been nice to see some improvement. H e still looks unsure and makes bad decisions

  10. So we can get excited for lt doing well in the preseason but ms doing bad its ok because its the preseason?

  11. avatar BigLen says:

do you know why everyone is over-reacting….it’s cause, way back in our minds, way back but still lurking is “same old Jets” Rex is trying very hard to get rid of that mentality, but after last nite…Rex must get heavier involved with Sanchez.

  12. avatar Nikolas says:

    1. The Jets need a very good QB coach. Cavanaugh is not going to cut it.MS is very talented but he is developing bad habits! And bad habits rarely die.
    2. Brunel will not grasp this offense in a three to four months period. Clemens should be the backup QB.
    3. Sign Revis already! With Revis, Cromartie and Wilson in the backfield I would feel much-much better!
    4. Watching the Green-Bay vs. Colts game and Morgan Burnet as the starting safety for Green-Bay, you have to question the Ducasse move in the draft! We could have had Burnet as our starting safety! But I guess the “FUTURE” plan of a cheap OL (to replace Woody and cut Faneca) was more important.
    5. The McKnight pick and the Leon Washington trade look now soooooo stupid!
    6. Till we see much-much more we should quit talking about the SB.

    • avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

So you would have prefered Leon to.LDT? That was the true trade, and you couldn’t hav e both.

Ducasse will pan out. He’s got the physical skills, he’s just raw, and from what I am seeing, our backfield looks pretty good.

      Revis? Sigh…

  13. Then the superbowl talk should stop because we dont know if we a franchise qb

    • avatar NamVetJet says:

The SB is a goal that every team should have every year. Getting there is extremly difficult. We have a shot this year—but nothing is guaranteed. Just because Rex verbalizes his goal of getting to the SB, it isn’t going to change what will happen this year.

  14. avatar JOEYTHEJET says:

if taco and the offense play like this when it counts,we will not win more than 6 games with the brutal schedule we got,and the fact that every team is gunning for us this year

  15. avatar HHH says:

THE SAYS THE RIGHT THINGS, BUT DOES ALL THE BAD THINGS!!

  16. Every jet fan will always have the SOJ somewhere in there mind until they win a SB

    • Yes, I agree.

SOJ will never fully die by excited words alone.

Winning is the only thing that will pull SOJ out by the roots, killing it forever.

We came close last year, made us all believe, but now the pressure is twice as hot.

We’re like the Bosox of 2003. Soclose. Only 2004 could put that to rest once and for all.

  17. Nikolas i agree i still dont get the leon trade or the vlad pick

    • avatar JOEYTHEJET says:

vlad was a waste of a second round when we could of gotten a good pass rusher,he will never be an elite player

      • avatar Bent says:

I’ve seen plenty of guys look a lot worse than Vlad when they first entered the league and still become good players. Nick Kaczur is a recent example.

        • I still believe he was originally projected as Woody’s heir, but they put 2+2 together and got 5 as far as using Vlad to replace Faneca. Not sure this is gonna work. Square peg; round hole.

I hope they start training him at RT soon to take over from Woody next year. Or this year if Woody can’t find somebody to block soon.

  18. avatar GANGGREEN says:

Saying the preseason doesn’t matter is like studying for a test, failing the pretest, and thinking your going to pass the real test. Now i know they are evaluating talent but our first string pass offense is atrocious..Edwards,Cotchery,Holmes,Keller and we still aren’t lighting up the scoreboard…As said on ESPN,” COME ON MAN! “

    • Since you want to put it like that lets insert some truth into it.
The Pre-Season Is like a math pre-test that nobody studies for, nobody brings a calculator to, and nobody takes serious because it doesn’t effect their grade.
Wait until the regular season The Jets will bring the calculators and be ready to ace it.

      • But even on the pre-test you expect to get the simple arithmetic stuff right. You know, the “Vanilla” everyone’s been throwing around as an excuse today.

        • The Jets are focusing on the hard problems to see if they can get them right. Passing In The Red Zone Come On. We Run In The Red Zone.
The Jets Played Bad In The Pre Season every knows it. We aren’t making excuses for that were making excuses to not take this farther than what it is.

  19. avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

All this Leon talk is ridiculous, just as the Thomas Jones talk before it was. If an injured Leon wasn’t traded, he leaves for nothing after 2010. Also, LDT is looking like an upgrade.

Ducasse has all the physical tools and is learning under the best o-line coach in the league.

We do not know what the season will bring. These are PRACTICE games.

As for Sanchez, remember, he sucked early last year, but when he got into pressure games, he rose to the occasion and played like a champ.

If Im correct, I do believe Rex said they wont be prep for these games or study but that might just be the Giants game?
