Buzz: AD to the NYC?

With the injury to Calvin Pace, is the team looking to find a roster ‘replacement’ at OLB? Could Adalius Thomas be heading to the Jets in the near future?  Possibly, according to ESPNNY.

The Jets are also showing interest in free agent Adalius Thomas, league sources told ESPNNewYork.com on Sunday. Thomas, 33, was released on April 26 by the New England Patriots and hasn’t drawn serious interest on the free-agent market.

Thomas played under Ryan from 2000 to 2006 with the Baltimore Ravens. He spent three seasons with the Patriots, but his production declined and he fell out of favor with coach Bill Belichick. In 14 games last season, he recorded 34 tackles, including three sacks.

No Darrelle, no Pace, Sanchez struggling, no Santonio for the first month … it’s not even the start of the regular season and there will be talk of the wheels falling off for this team over the next week.  Are pundits going to get cold feet on the offseason champs?  Especially now when you take a second look at that first month schedule?

Adding Adalius Thomas is – in my mind – a last ditch move.  It’s like the Ty Law acquisition of 2008.  Nice in theory, but not much else.  Maybe AD can respond and see this as his last hurrah in the league … but I have to confess that I don’t think he can play at a level that the Jets would need him to.  The fact that no one has made a run at him since April tells you all you need to know about his current abilities.

Bring him in, we are in hard times!!

  2. avatar Nick E says:

No need to panic yet, season hasnt started, if no one is grabbing him now why not wait till week one or two to truly see if we have this whole everyone speaks of so early, dont make desperation moves yet, perfect example would be jenkins out last yr and we go to the afc championship game

    • Why would this be a desperation move ? Why can’t it just be “a move” ? Wouldn’t the smart thing to do be to bring him in tomorrow, see if he can play(leave him alone if he can’t), then sign him so he can get some work in against Philly etc, etc , etc.

      • avatar Ben Nevis says:

As I said on a previous thread, signing AD after the season starts decreases his value to us in those first few games—-which is exactly when we need him.

AD needs to get a ton of reps with our D BEFORE we play the Ravens in our first game.

I know AD knows Rex’s system, but there’s no substitute for time on the field when you’re working with all new teammates. Ideally, I’d like to see AD play in our last preseason game this Thursday.

        • avatar Bent says:

He still could play on Thursday and then not be on the opening day roster, then be brought back afterwards.

          • avatar Ben Nevis says:

            Bent—

Yes, I was thinking that as well.

It’s like what they’re probably going to do with Coles.

Play him now. Cut him before the season begins. Then resign him, and not have to pay him a full year’s salary for four games work.

One question, though, Bent: if they do cut AD between now and the beginning of the season, does that mean that he can’t play against the Ravens?

            • avatar Bent says:

Correct, he won’t be able to play against the Ravens because it’s those guys on the opening day roster that have their salaries guaranteed at that point.

What they’d be saying is we’d rather have him for 3-5 games but not the first one at a cost of 200-300K than have him for week one and be on the hook for 850K (or whatever the minimum for a guy his age is) regardless of how much he’d play. As long as Gholston, Taylor, Westerman and BT are all healthy, there won’t be many reps for him in week one anyway.

That’s if he can prove he’s going to be capable of cracking that rotation when they work him out.

          • avatar Ben Nevis says:

            Thanks, Bent—

Yes, I can see this factoring into the FO’s thinking: lose AD for one game, and pay him about half a mil less. Then have him play for another three, four or five games for us.

If they work AD out this week, and see that he could be a plus for us, then I would expect him to get a lot of reps with our D for a week or so, then get cut, then resigned after the first game.

          • avatar James in TN says:

this cutting crap is crazy, just use layout’s money to cover fill ins. We don’t need the no loyalty tag coming up.

  3. avatar bob says:

we will be fine. we need to take out the oxigen containers above the seat on the jet and put in laughing gas….

  4. avatar Albert says:

Well worst thing he takes veteran’s minimum and we cut him lose when pace is expected back. Between him and Taylor someone needs to step up

  5. avatar EastSide says:

    *yawn*
Like the Kimo VonOellhoffen, Bobby Hamilton and Law acquisitions, this is a move that might have been effective 3-5 years ago but today it will do little to no good for this team. Thomas is a band-aid that’s lost most of its stick.

Personally, I’d rather see a guy like Westerman step up into Pace’s role and prove his worth.

  6. avatar tyrone says:

at 33 years old you never know he has not won a sb yet so this could be his last chance .the way LT is playing maybe being back with rex will pump him up you never know

  7. avatar brian311 says:

the fact is that we are incredibly thin at OLB and ILB. AD can play both of these positions. Can he play at an all pro level – no. But i think he is worth taking a look at, if we could get him cheap

  8. avatar Starz31 says:

I’d love to know if he has been preparing to play in 2010, I.e. Staying in shape. We need I’m for the first month of the season, would he be ready to go in two weeks and not only playing but play well. No time for him to stage off the rust or start slow. If he is ready then he should be a jet.

Maybe this is a chance for western

  9. avatar Starz31 says:

    Chance for westerman*.
    /Damn phone

  10. avatar J!E!T!S! says:

The guy played in Ryan’s system and played well in it. Sure he wasn’t very good for the Pats but that could have been more about there scheme then his disintegrating skills. Sure he’s not the 2006 AD but why not give a guy a shot who played well for Rex before.

  11. avatar MEL31602 says:

SI_PeterKing: Just talked to Adalius Thomas. He has talked to the Jets but nothing is imminent.

  12. avatar Dmazz says:

I wouldn’t be against this move ad long as it came cheap. It’s nice because he would be compelled to play at his best due to the 1st two opponents having history there.

  13. avatar bobbert says:

boy after high expectations this season is turning into a disaster

  14. avatar Ed L says:

I think we need a back up plan to westermann…I say bring ad in and if he is in shape let him and westerman duke it out against philly for who gets to be the backup..we will pace back and who knows maybe ad can look at these first few games as a showase for other teams in the nfl

  15. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

I figured we would make a potential stab at AT. The truth is we are the biggest hyped football team in the NFL. We are a good team with A LOT of bravado. It sounds nice, but we will see on the field. Last year we came in with fairly low expectations I feel. We made some draft splashes, but I never thought we were a playoff team all year. We snuck in and played well in the tourny. Now we are a SB favorite? Seriously we are good and we should see a 10-6 maybe 11-5 team that gets in as a Wildcard or maybe squeezes the division. We are not better than Indy, or even SD yet. Maybe Balt and Cincy could be even better. We will see, but this is not a walk on to the SB. This league has ALOT of parity and we need to stop with worrying about every struggle.

All the teams that win the championship have injuries and free agent problems…

Pace will be okay and Holmes will return. If we can go 2-2 in the first 4 games, I would be happy, because then we can (barring new injuries) be full strength leading into crunch time. Hopefully th team works something out with Revis before week 5. If not trade him, or let him sit and see what the new bargaining agreement gives the Jets for momentum during crazy negotiations.

Everyone should really stop worrying and just get back to reality. Drink what Ryan is putting out there, but remain humble. The Jets are not, but we as fans (fanatics) should try to or else every losing year is a bad one.

I am a Laker fan and a Yankee fan (go figure). I live in SD and am from NY and NJ. Every year the Lakers or Yanks don’t bring a trophy home is a bad year. We haven’t won enough to think that way. I like it better as underdogs.

  16. “boy after high expectations this season is turning into a disaster”

we havent played a single game yet people – if we are 0-3 then it will be time to panic

  17. avatar WW85 says:

Seems like AT is a must unless some LB rich team cuts somebody in the same way we cut Coles. We struggled without Pace last year. Not sure why it would be different this year. How about Cory Reamer?? :)

Oddly, I’m not as worried sans Revis. Cro, Wilson, Poole all playing so well, I think we are just as good as last year in the secondary overall.

  18. avatar SackDance99 says:

I’m indifferent to AD. On the plus side, Rex knows him, he knows the defense and he’ll be super-motivated against the Ravens and Pats. On the negative side, he looked bad last year (but, he was in BB’s doghouse) and, more importantly, he may not be in good football shape. I think the Jets can get by with playing more 46, 4-3 defenses with their current players. AD, however, can’t hurt.

  19. avatar Eirias says:

Why was he such a disaster for the Pats? Simply age? He was a fierce defender for Baltimore, even if wildly overpaid by his subsequent contract.

    • avatar CA JETS FAN says:

I do not think it was age so much as the system. Patriots were never a real big sack team from what I remember. BB scheme relys on stopping the run and applying pressure, so sacks are not what to look at.

Gholston: Huge mistake to play him standing up. His confidence will grow drastically if we keep him perminently at end.

      • avatar Bent says:

He’s already been standing up half the time. The difference is that he’s the Rush LB so doesn’t have coverage responsibilities (except very rarely) and can focus on going forward. Many of his best plays over the last two games have been from a standing position.

  20. avatar juunit says:

No point in bringing him in. Jason Taylor will just get more playing time. The Jets need another lineman, not another linebacker.

  21. avatar Harvlis says:

I like Ellis, Pouha, and Jenkins with Gholston and Bryan Thomas at OLB’s. Harris and Scott in the middle. If these guys stay healthy, we will be just fine.

If the Jets are offering Revis similar guarantees to Mangold and Ferguson — I think he is making a big mistake, in not signing. If he misses this season, and football has a strike, next season, he will be missing two years of his football prime. You can’t get that back.

  22. wow not much panic on this board..we sure we’re all jet fans here??

  23. Yes we are all Jet fans not SOJ fans. Kudos to Harvis for his posts, I agree 100%. Go Jets!
