Jets Release Coles, Henry, Allison and Wright

by Steiny on August 29th, 2010 at 12:33 pm

Very interesting to see the Jets release Coles.  I expected him to step in for the first four games of the season while Holmes was suspended.  With three WR’s now gone, they will now turn to Brad Smith.  Furthermore, this almost guarantees David Clowney a roster spot.

As for Wright, Rex clearly wanted him to step up when Ropati Pitoitua was lost for the season.  Rex obviously didn’t see anything during the Redskins game that made him think Wright can fill Pitoitua’s shoes, and thus he has been released.

Clowney is now a lock to make the roster. I think this means the Jets are looking to add another DE as well. Wouldn’t be surprised if the Jets decided to add AD, because he is versatile enough to play DE or LB.

  2. avatar Dave says:

Coles is a lot better then Clowney

  3. avatar Dylan says:

I think the Jets will wait until Tuesday, when a lot of players are going to be cut, before making a move.

  4. avatar Tim says:

Clowney’s not gonna be the third receiver though, it’s gonna be Smith. Smith has looked alot better this preseason, and Clowney has surprisingly been nonexistent.

Re: Dylan- As I wrote on a prior thread, the Jets likely are going to bring in Thomas for a workout and will sign him if he’s in shape and the agent doesn’t demand too much.

  6. avatar E. Weeks says:

Somewhat sad to see them cut Coles considering just the other day his teammates confirmed he still had some spark left. Of course it’s possible he could rejoin but at least he’ll get his wish and be able to retire a Jet.

    • avatar BamBam says:

I would be sad too if Coles hadn’t slit us and gone to the Jetskins. I feel no remorse at all. I admire his toughness and intensity but he has clearly slowed down.

  7. Yeah Brad Smith Is Stepping Up, I Can Be Happy With Him At The Third Receiver Until Santonio Gets Back, We are going to run it like hell anyway.

  8. avatar david harris says:

Wow. Brendan you were right. He did have something to prove this preseason. Hat tip to you.

  9. avatar Matt Birdoff says:

sucks to see Coles get cut, but he really did seem old and slow in the plays he was in on. Hopefully they put him in a front office job or something. He was a great Jet while he was playing.

  10. Coles might still be picked before the season, they might just wanna bring in other guys and see what they have but don’t be surprised to see Coles back against the Ravens

  11. love coles to death, but was done his last stint with us.

interested to see what defensive lineman we pick up.

  12. i think its time to bench sanchez, start clemens and let sanchez back him up. give him a no-pressure year to develop and then maybe dump him for draft picks.

    • avatar Dylan says:

Come on man you can’t be serious… This is all because of a couple preseason games?

      • Sanchez has looked slow and inacurrate on many plays. Yes it’s preseason and it would be overreacting to bench him but I’m starting to worry. I hope he proves me in the regular season. Another quaterback drafted high from USC has not done well….Is Sanchez another Matt Leinard?

        • avatar Dylan says:

Comparing Sanchez to Leinert is unfair. Sanchez helped bring his team to the AFC Championship in his rookie season, is a gym rat, and desperately wants to get better. Leinert was a party boy at USC, had a terrible work ethic, and never showed any heart. Plus Leinert stayed an extra year at USC, and Sanchez came out early.

Sanchez is still a fairly inexperienced QB and he does need to improve. He stepped up big time in the playoffs though, and he showed that he has all the tools to eventually be a great QB. Was his preseason performance disheartening? Yeah, a bit. But lets give him a chance to play well in the regular season with an actual game plan, before we kill him.

Dude, whatever you’re smoking, you need to cut back.

  13. avatar Mars Blackmon says:

Clowney won’t b a factor on offense and he isn’t a special teams stud, why not give that spot to one of the odd men out(Larry, woodhead, Washington) those 3 kids are extremely hungry while clowney has just been “hanging around” the last few seasons…

  14. avatar Dylan says:

Btw Antonio Bryant was just released.

  15. avatar Randy says:

I knew it.I called it during the last preseason game against the Redskins.I knew Brad Smith was going to be the 3rd Wide Receiver based on how Coles was not looking good in the Preseason. Its sad because I really wanted Coles to make this team but truth is that he doesn’t have anything left.

  16. avatar richardtodd says:

Adailus Thomas is the guy we need most…Let’s see what other teams do before we go for another WR, which I dont think we need…Smith and Clowney can hold down the ship before Holmes gets back…Remember, we didnt even have Holmes last year!!!!

    • avatar EastSide says:

Aren’t you at all troubled by the fact NO other team has shown a hint of interest in him and Ryan himself has consistently shot down any notion that the Jets would like to pick him up?

At this point picking AT up would seem like nothing but desperation and I would really begin to worry.

  17. avatar EastSide says:

How long are we gonna keep Clowney around for unfulfilled potential? He seems like a great guy and has flashed in preseasons past but I don’t see how he contributes on offense (like Brad Smith) or even specials (like Eric Smith, Westerman or Larry Taylor).

  18. avatar Jetsfan29 says:

Clowney is the gunner! Didn’t he force or recover a fumble against the panthers? I agree we need AD but I’d rather the jets sign Aaron shobel! Stick it to the dolphins and the bills while adding depth at Olb and De sure wish we kept douglas at this point but o well!

    • avatar Bent says:

Clowney hasn’t had much work as a gunner and wasn’t very effective. Cole has been much better.

He did recover a fumble by being in the right place at the right time, but so did Gholston and Woodhead.

  19. avatar vd10 says:

what’s going on with cumberland? what are the chances of him making the roster?

    • avatar Dylan says:

He did have that tipped pass last week, which a lot of people saw as a negative. I think the fact that he was playing with the first team shows how highly the Jets think of him though. I think he will make the roster.

    • avatar HHH says:

On Hard Knock, the depth chart showed jets would keep 4 Tight Ends!!

  20. avatar juunit says:

Adalius Thomas is not the answer. He’s just the best player still available. They need a guy who can truly play the line, not a linebacker.

  21. avatar Dylan says:

rodboonee Ryan said there is definite interest in A.D. and Jets may make a move there sooner than later. Could happen as soon as tonight. #Jets

  22. avatar Dylan says:

nyjets EA: Coach Ryan says it’s a real possibility Laveranues Coles could be back after the first game. 2 minutes ago via web

Good job Bent! You saw this coming from a mile away.

  23. avatar cmart28 says:

Damn, I really didn’t want Clowney to make the team. He provides nothing as a WR (at least Coles might be able to contribute for a couple of plays if someone got hurt) and isn’t good on special teams, but now it looks like he’ll make the team.

  24. avatar Dylan says:

RichCimini Ryan says starters will not play at all in Philly pre-season finale, except for LG Matt Slauson. #Jets

    Good decision.

  25. avatar jet says:

imagine if we picked up a. bryant? i would have 4 wr out every play

    but it wont happen…

  26. avatar atrain says:

AD FOR CHEAP WOULD BE OK FOR ME. A TEMP FILL IN ….

  27. I think that all of these names, except R Wright were players who would not get significant PT. IOW, who goes and stays at this level is irrelevant. If we lose our top 3 WR during the first four weeks, it is more likely we see LT picking up the load than a clown. And, when Holmes comes back, whoever is the depth at WR is gone.

RW was only important because of our lack of depth at DE. I would not be shocked for us to pick up a never was who played in Rex’ system after the first week (no guarantee).

And, the only cuts that will be important is whether the young-uns at CB can displace the losers (Coleman and Cole) that we have there. But here too. If we go much beyond Lowery, we are likely in big trouble.

    harlan

    • avatar Dylan says:

Coleman’s deal is now guaranteed, so he isn’t gong anywhere. The Jets restructured his deal so that he makes less money, but its entirely guaranteed.

      • avatar Bent says:

Coleman and Cole are also two of the best STers. I hope they aren’t needed much on defense, but they are important to the roster.

  28. avatar Kevino says:

How long did it take Eli before he got decent? Four years? It will probably get worse before it gets better. If I could sign up for an equal amount of TD passes & interceptions for Sanchez this year, I’d do it in a heartbeat…

    • avatar Andy says:

      Eli?
Exact opposite of Sanny. Elis has got the skills but dosent know it… Eli’s problems are all in his head. The fix? Make him watch Rudy till his eyes bleed.

  29. maybe now since clowney has been non existent in the preseason he’ll actually do something in the real season unlike the last 2 years… not 100 percent surprised about coles being cut either after watching hard knocks and seeing coles sitting by himself in the front looking old and uncomfortable at rookie talent show something didnt look right with him

  30. avatar ziggyd says:

I think Clowney is on the team by default…I’m glad Coles is gone…he has nothing left, and when he left the first time I was done with the drama queen…it something better turns up on the waiver wire Clowney is gone…Westhoff has had enough of him on special teams…I said it before Pace was gone a minimum of 4 weeks…now it looks more like a minimum of 6 if he has surgery…Gholston time to put up or shut up…please no Adalius Thomas…he’s more done than Coles…

  31. avatar Brendan says:

It looks like they’re still going to try to bring him back after Week 1 for $50k/week salary. That wouldn’t be too bad, as his deal wouldn’t be guaranteed.

But I said it when he was brought in, he’s simply not that good anymore. I got chastised for simply wondering aloud if Brad Smith could do the job that Coles was presumably brought in to do. It appears as though Smith has taken big steps forward in terms of being a receiver and Coles barely saw the field in preseason. I never liked Coles, but that didn’t factor into my assumption that he was done, and he appears to be. Even if he’s brought back after Week 1, I don’t see him making it past mid-season with the etam.
