Sanchez and Mangold on Cover of SI

by Steiny on August 31st, 2010 at 2:04 pm

Keep in mind this is just for their Northeast cover…

For whats it is worth, Peter King has the Jets going 10-6 and winning the AFC East.  However, he has the Jets losing to the Steelers in the divisional round.  In the end, he has the Steelers beating the Packers in the Super Bowl.

On a side note, Sportingnews has the Jets going 12-4 and beating the Cowboys in the big game.

I think I may actually get this issue

  2. avatar devo says:

10-6 sounds about right. For the hell of it, I’ll say losses to the Patriots, Ravens, Dolphins, Packers, Vikings and Steelers.

  3. avatar brian311 says:

this is a regional cover, right?

  4. avatar starz31 says:

At least Peter King picked us to lose in the playoffs. That pretty much guarantees a super bowl.

  5. avatar Brendan says:

King is such a doofus. Not one Steelers fan is confident about this season.

  6. avatar starz31 says:

Further proof Sanchez needs to work on looking off the safety.

  7. Damnit, they fell for the “JINX” again. They put Sanchize on the cover last yr after we beat SD. And look @ what happened to us the following week. Bassett, Bent, hell anyone please let Sanchez know about being on that cover.

    W/O Revis: 6-10

    W/ Revis: 11-5

Yes, he represents that much of a difference.

PAY THE MAN! AND LETS WIN THE SB, B/C ONCE AGAIN…. IF NOT ITS GONNA BE A LONG SEASON!

  8. avatar bob says:

GEENBAY PACKERS IS MY PIC NFC… STEELERS IN THE AFC? I DONT THINK SO! I PIC THE JETS HOWEVER I HAVE THEM GETTING OFF TO A SLOW START……

  9. Oh yeah, Peter King is the largest tool in the shed. And to think as a youngster, him and Gary “fishlips” Myers, i thought their words were from the bible. thats how much i followed them….. Religiously.

  10. avatar greene says:

i read this exact article on tim graham’s blog on espn……… just saying…….

  11. avatar CJF27 says:

The Steelers? Really? Does anyone, Steelers fans included, really think they will go anywhere this season?

  12. Ok, Brendan. Mr. NFL Nastrodamus… Whats our record this yr.

Lets make an internet bet. If Revis doesnt play all yr.. then whats the record?

If he plays from week 1, then whats the record?

If he comes back mid-season or before the 10th game then whats the record.

B/c i’m trying to get to Dallas, and everyone knows the importance of Revis… Hell we went 9-7 w/o. So whats your take on it. Whats our record? Playoffs or No Playoffs..

Now if your wrong on your predicition, then all offseason you cant post as Brendan anymore… Like really, you might as well get AARP or HIP, b/c you can retire that screen name. What do you say??? Friendly Cyber Bet.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Hah, so you want me to bet my name (which is my real name, for the record) on getting the record of all 3 of those scenario’s correctly?

But for you to say that the defense will be so bad that the team’s win total is a difference of 5 games is absurd to me. The defense will be elite without Revis, so what makes you think the team regresses from last season that badly?

Without Revis, I put the team at 9 or 10 wins.

With Revis, I put the team at 11 or 12.

But this is the AFC, where a difference between 10 and 11 wins could very well be a playoff spot, so his presence is still important. I just don’t think the team is headed for a top 10 draft pick simply because Revis isn’t here.

The team is loaded in all areas, and Kyle Wilson is proving he’s a starting CB. So I’m not going to predict records because I have as much shot at doing that as Joan Rivers, it’s all guessing.

      • avatar Brendan says:

And what happens if the “just pay” Revis this year, screw the cap for the future, don’t win in 2010 and then are stuck in neutral for five years? That’s a better option than waiting it out and forcing Revis’ hand?

        • avatar Eddie DiGio says:

What happens when Jenkins, Ellis, Bart Scott Pace, BT all get up above 30 in a few years???

There’s no guarantee’s for the future either. but our best shot is with #24 on the field…

Sometimes you just gotta push all your chips into the middle of the table and say “WTF

          • avatar Brendan says:

Their big contracts come off the book and they use an influx of youth and free agents to sustain their success? I actually need to explain that to you? (I know I don’t, you’re a smart guy, but your question isn’t).

  13. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

You people are completely delusional if you think the Jets wont miss Revis when or if they play the Indy’s, New Englands of the world…Can’t wait for Brady or Peyton to spread them out and destroy Lowery on every play…then the Jets will open up the checkbook after an 0-2 start

Bottom line is this…the defense without Revis is good enough to finish in the top 10 and get 9-10 wins…they will be DESTROYED by any elite QB with a good WR corps

I love Rex but I aint drinking the kool aid on this one…its time to pay Revis or trade him for another corner to a team that will…hes too valuable a commodity to being playing Madden 11 whereever the heck he is right now

  14. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

RJF Im totally with you…the Jets defense will dominate the Buffalo’s, Clevelands or Detroit’s but the Jets are in for a RUDE awakening when they face Brady Week 2 if they are without Revis…or any top flight QB WR combo. All I remember is Collie and Garcon celebrating in the endzone with our lockdown nickel back Dwight Lowery

Its embarassing when fans of other teams are all telling me the whole offseason how they’d be happy if there team traded 2 1st rd’ers for Relle or how the Jets just need to pay Revis…this whole thing has been a disgrace

    • avatar Brendan says:

Isn’t this what people said when Jenkins went down?

In case you guys have been ignoring the first team defense during preseason, Cromartie is back. He’s running down receivers like a cheetah taking down antelopes. Kyle Wilson is in the receiver’s back pocket almost every play.

Is Revis/”a steaming heap of trash” a better combination than Cromartie/Wilson? Absolutely not.

      • avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Cromartie’s back huh??? I saw his pick get negated by a penalty and him drop picks Relle would have been celebrating in the end zone with…Cromarties got some skills but he aint on the same planet as Revis…not even the same universe…Plus who did Cro shut down that was even comparable to what Revis did last year and you’re ready to crown him???

Two good corners with no real viable elite pass rusher aint gonna get it done anymore…not against Brees, Rodgers, Brady or Peyton…sorry it aint

You put Revis, Cromartie and Kyle out there…now were in business

But if you just gonna be happy with a meaningless top 10 defensive ranking when you told everyone in the civilized world you’re thinking Super Bowl, then try to sell the fan base that “Hey we’ll be alright without him” it makes you a JOKE…and thats what this whole situation has become…an outright debacle

        • avatar Brendan says:

Like the pick Relle dropped that would’ve won the Falcons game? You give him demi-God status, when in reality he’s had as many elite season as Cromartie has had. Stop being so close-minded and realize this is a team game, and while Revis makes the team better, the team is still a top tier team without him. Maybe watch an actual game before you call out the optimism people still hold for this season.

The only joke involved in this is Revis.

You guys are willing to cripple a franchise for years for one player, and the vast majority of the fans of this team are not.

          • avatar Eddie DiGio says:

The vast majority at the Meadowlands screaming PAY REVIS right???

Dude, hes the best player at his position in the league…its not even close…Cromartie had 10 picks but he didnt do what Revis did…

Sorry if it ruins your day but this team ain’t the same without Revis…and if you want to keep eating up all the BS you see or read from Rex, thats fine, but I aint buying it

          • avatar Brendan says:

The only BS I’m eating is what I’ve seen, and that is a defense that is fast, athletic, physical and still the best unit in the league. #1 defense is #1 defense. Revis makes it historically good, but without him they’re still great.

And those people aren’t chanting Pay Revis as much anymore, I don’t hear those chants echoing through NM Stadium like they were in the Spring.

          • avatar stewballz says:

Yeah Eddie revis only scored that one td because it was a freak play where the ball bounced off of the receivers foot and had nothing but daylight ahead of him.

Brendan good point with the “Cro has had as many elite seasons as revis has had” its just not sound business to pay a guy that much for only being elite for such a short time.

      • avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Is Revis/”a steaming heap of trash” a better combination than Cromartie/Wilson? Absolutely not.

In case you haven’t noticed, Kyle Wilson is locked up for the next 5 years after signing his 1st rd contract…so it will be a Revis/ Kyle Wilson combo for the next 5 years…not the steaming pile of crap

Id give Cro’s re-up money to Revis in a second, and go draft another cover corner in Rd 1 or 2 in next years draft

        • avatar Brendan says:

…unless Wilson pulls a Revis and holds out after only fullfilling 1/2 his deal.

And my comparison was for last year (Revis/trash) vs. the current situation (Cro/Wilson).

And you want to have drafted a first round CB in 3 of the past five drafts? Seriously? Eddie, come back to us, please.

          • avatar starz31 says:

The point is, I want all THREE of them in our secondary. A combination of two out of Cro, Revis, or Wilson would give us a great defense, and we could have a good season. But that wont be enough to beat the elite teams in the playoffs. ALL THREE of them gives us what we need to take on the best QBs in the NFL, which most likely is what we will be facing on our way to Dallas.

          • avatar Eddie DiGio says:

            Why not???

Isnt our fearless leader Rex Ryan a proponent of the “you can never have enough cover corners” philosophy

          • avatar Brendan says:

Yes, take what Rex said as literally as possible. He would start 11 cover corners if the team let him.

          • avatar starz31 says:

With this team, if we can make the playoffs…then its worth spending the money to make sure you have THE best corner in the NFL on your side.

          • avatar Brendan says:

Not if spending that money screw your team for the future, which a $16+ million/year figure would most certainly do.

  15. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Whats the point of being ranked in the top 10 in defense if you know you aren’t good enough to beat the elite teams???

I for one, am sick of that mentality…Herman Edwards was already the coach here

    • avatar Brendan says:

You’re certain that the Jets can’t beat any good team without Revis?

With Jenks, they can send less players to create pressure. This lets them drop more into coverage. Last year, even with the entire defense either hurt, getting hurt, getting beat, the team was 15 minutes from a Super Bowl birth, so my apologies if I don’t feel like lighting my Mangold Jersey on fire on a row boat and giving the Jets season a viking funeral before it even starts.

      • avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Yea…Id bet anything that this team can’t beat Indy, New England, Baltimore, Green Bay, Minnesota or New Orleans in any meaningful game without the Revis/Cro/ Kyle Wilson trio..

Hey they still might win 9 or 10 games…but they aint a Super Bowl caliber defense without Revis and a bonafide game changer pass rusher, and Sanchez could do a decent job at QB but is no where near ready to put the offense on his back and light up the scoreboard on way to a title…

Problem is the Jets have yapped and yapped about winning a Super Bowl this year, but they are sitting on their hands while their best player, who they publicized and crowned the best at his position, sits home and plays me in Madden 11 (which Revis is SICK in btw)

Its my opinion and we won’t find that out for sure til the real bullets start flying

        • avatar Brendan says:

Interestingly enough, every team that has won a Super Bowl has done so without Revis. Wild…

        • avatar Brendan says:

And if it’s not just Revis, but a bunch of issues that make this team a non-Super Bowl team, why waste money this season on Revis at all? Why not wait until the rest of the team is ready to win?

          • avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Cuz having him gives you the BEST CHANCE to win with the way the team is currently constituted

          • avatar Brendan says:

For one year. What happens next year? Or the year after that? Or after that? He screws the team in the long run. He’s refusing to take deals that similarly skilled players (Mangold- best C, A. Johnson- Best WR, P. Willis- Best MLB, Elvis Dumervil- top 5 pass rusher, D’Brick- top 5 LT) are taking. He’s saying he’s beyond even those guys. Revis is saying he’s special and deserves a separate set of rules. Sorry, not in this life.

  16. avatar Randy says:

I think ESPN and all these Analyst are over rating Revis on our defense.Yea we were 9-7 with Revis last season and they can say we will be worse without Revis. But there is one key element that everyone keeps forgetting. We played last season without Kris Jenkins last season. To me Jenkins gets us more wins than Revis does.

You really got to ask yourself what is better.

Revis,Cromartie, Wilson Without Jenkins or Cromartie,Wilson,Jenkins Without Revis

I am going with Jenkins. I would much rather go in with Jenkins demanding double teams while Cromartie and Wilson play Coverage.

Only thing that really bugs me about this situation is the injury to Calvin Pace. That injury really worries me because I don’t trust Jason Taylor to take over full time over Calvin Pace.

    • avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Jenkins, who crapped out the last 4 games of 08 and played 6 games last year???

Lets put it on his back right???

Hey the guy can dominate for stretches but needs to be spelled…

It cracks me up how fans of other teams all sweat Revis so hard and his own fan base is ready to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in his abscense

      • avatar Brendan says:

Jenkins “crapped out” because Mangini used him as a traditional NT and never rested him. Rex isn’t stupid and knows how to handle the big fella (he also is in the best shape in years, so that should help).

“Lets put it on his back right???”

That is my exact point. You don’t put it on any ONE guy’s back. You put it on all their backs. Bart Scott keeps talking about how the defense is challenging each other to be great, that greatness is the goal. That happens with Revis or without Revis.

And you wouldn’t hoist the Lombardi Trophy (if earned) in his absence? Really? I find that hard to believe.

    • avatar starz31 says:

All the elite WRs that Revis covered/shut-down last year would dispute your point.

The Pace injury hurts, no question, but you can’t get worked up over it. It didn’t slow us down last year missing Pace the first 4 weeks of the season.

  17. avatar Randy says:

Man, if we can stay healthy until week 5 and at least have a 2-2 record..we will be in a Great situation moving forward.Getting back Holmes, Pace and potentially Revis would be Huge!!

  18. avatar Randy says:

Here is how I predict the Schedule going for the Jets 1st 8 games.Whats your take.

    1-Ravens-W
    2-Patriots-L
    3-Dolphins-W
    4-Bills-W
    5-Vikings-L
    6-Broncos-W
    7-Packers-L
    8-Lions-W

So we will start off about average (5-3)but not as Superbowl Material.Note we get back Holmes,Pace and Revis by the time we play the Vikings. For the next 8 Games I see us really taking off though.

    9-Browns-W
    10-Texans-W
    11-Bengals-W
    12-Patriots-W
    13-Dolphins-W
    14-Steelers-L
    15-Bears-L
    16-Bills-W

For me there is NO WAY we lose both games against the Pats after losing the 1st game and the Dolphins I Know we will be focused to win.Browns,Bills and Texans I have a feeling will be one sided for us and A Team like the Bears would beat us because thats the kind of teams the Jets always seem to lose to for some reason.Steelers at Pittsburg will be ready to play and I can see us losing that game. The Bengals on Thanksgiving will be Very tough but I think we can take them.So we finish 6-2 and our record ends up being 11-5 which is fair don’t you think?Maybe
12-4 if we beat either the Vikings,Packers or Steelers.

    Hope is not a strategy

  20. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Brendan

How are you so ABSOLUTELY 1000000000000% sure that signing Revis to that deal would MOST CERTAINLY cripple the Jets to the point where they could no longer field a competitive team???

And furthermore, so what if they lost all those guys, by your logic all you need to do is challenge each other to be great, and forget it Super Bowl hear we come..

You can be as condescending as you want to me…cause Im getting really tired of it…but you dont know anything of the stuff you are posting as scripture to be FACT…

So until the real bullets start flying and we’ll see who is right

  21. avatar Mike F. says:

    Randy,
I like your rundown of the season except for one thing. I dont see us losing to the Bears. Revis or no Revis we will destroy that team on defense. Cutler wont know what hit him. He’s already proven several times that he makes bad decisions under pressure (which he will be under ALOT from the Jets). And with AlCroTraz and Wilson back in coverage they will have a field day. Just dont see us losing 3 out of 4 to the NFC North.

    Brendan,

Finally someone sees what I have seen. Cromartie has been SICK this preseason. He’s flying to the ball on every play. If it’s tipped in the air, he’s almost always near it trying to get it. And did I mention that he’s been a tackling machine. By his previous standards anyways lol.

I love Revis as much as the next guy, but I am not panicking. Is he great? sure. The Best? Maybe. Are we hurting without him at CB? NO. Would we be better with him? OF COURSE. So hopefully he gets his head out of his @$$ and signs before the season, but if not, ya know what?, oh well. I dont see us losing any more games because he isnt on the field. We will lose games because of our offense not outscoring the other team. Which shouldnt be too hard considering most teams should only be scoring about 13-17 points if that….

    Just MHO…..

  22. avatar Brad says:

Maybe I’m a little bit late to the party, but anyone else notice how hilarious this picture is? Surely someone would have made a comment about how it looks like Mangold’s junk is hanging out, right?
