Gamethread: New York Jets @ Philadelphia Eagles 09.02.10

by Weeks on September 2nd, 2010 at 6:42 pm

The famous Andy Reid ’pat’ returns to the Eagles sidelines.

Who: New York Jets @ Philadelphia Eagles
When: 7:30 p.m. EDT
Where: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA
Media: TV – WCBS, Radio - 1050 AM ESPN Radio, Sirius – 127, Sirius XM – XM 104, Internet AudioNFL Fieldpass.
Injury Report: Darrelle Revis (DNR – Wallet), Erik Ainge (DNR – Rehab), Charlie Tanner (Knee), Josh Mauga (Concussion), Donovan Warren (Concussion).
Their Previous Meeting: In their (generally) annual preseason matchup, the Eagles would fly (Ha-get it?) to the Meadowlands to take on the Jets in the team’s final preseason match a year ago tomorrow. Newly-named starter Mark Sanchez and the rest of the first team were given one series against the Eagles and they would capitalize as Sanchez completed all five of his passes, the last one being a 21 yard touchdown to Jerricho Cotchery. From there, it would turn into a score-fest as the second and third team offenses got to work. Philly scored 17 points in the second quarter while the Jets scored 10 via a Woodhead run and a Feely FG however the Jets would trail the Eagles 17-24 at halftime despite harassing the heck out of Michael Vick (Sack by Westerman, Lowery INT). With Erik Ainge working the offense for the second half, the Jets would strike twice in the third quarter with a four yard pass to Wallace Wright for a TD and a Woodhead run that put the Jets in the lead. The defense continued to play lights out into the fourth as only one David Akers field goal was allowed. The Jets would secure their victory when Ainge threw a 73 yard bomb to Mr. August himself, David Clowney, thus securing the team’s 38-27 victory.

Following the team’s second straight loss in the preseason, the starters will hit the bench for the night. However the starters, or more appropriately Mark Sanchez, will be kept on his toes for a while as he will call some plays on offense. Hopefully in doing so, he’ll be able to gain a greater understanding of certain situations as he will have the luxury of stepping back to assess the situation more carefully.

That being said, the spotlight will remain on the second and third teams who will take the field. Although this seems like a recipe for a boring showcase, many of these guys will be fighting for their careers tonight trying to make a statement and show the coaching staff they belong (Danny Woodhead did it last preseason, ironically against the Eagles).

  3. avatar tyrone says:

well i have to wait till 11pm to see it on sny directv.

  4. avatar Ed L says:

ironically the eagles have played the jets in this last preseason game for the past 10 years…

so most all 2nd/3rd stringers have had to prove it against the eagles

  5. I want 2 Drives and thats It!!!

No messing around with injuries this close to opening day.Give the Offense 2 drives and from there let guys like Ducasse,McKnight,Lowery Etc..get some work in.

  6. avatar Jim says:

    Anyone have the stream?

  7. Does anyone have a site where I can watch the game???

  8. Brady and Eli both started today, but I don’t wanna see any starters on the field except for Slauson, Santonio, and KW. Let’s get ready for Baltimore boys!

  9. #1 Thing Ill be looking at tonight-

    1-Kellen Clemens

I really don’t see how Brunnell is our backup and I really hope for a good game out of Clemens.I always knew he was a class act, but after seeing Hard Knocks last night, I became a Kellen Clemens supporter.I really hope he does well tonight and locks down that backup Job.

  10. avatar James in TN says:

anybody got it on yet on the net?

  11. Why didn’t Money bounce to the outside on that 2nd down run ? Ughhhhhh !! All I saw was open spaces ..

  12. avatar MEL31602 says:

    firstrow.net
The Eagles broadcast but better than nothing

  13. avatar sweeper says:

Nice move Taylor…to get the first

  14. avatar sweeper says:

    McNight will be cut

  15. avatar tomg says:

McNight fumbles the ball way to much.

  16. avatar Wolf says:

    Hey Brendan,

Woodhead over McKnight? That kid should be cut.

  17. avatar Antstiggity says:

Someone get the crazy glue to mcknight, I like what I see, but it’s disappointing when you see turnover like that

  18. avatar Dan in Ok says:

Damn! I thought mcknight might be coming around but…he can’t be trusted.

  19. avatar WW85 says:

Cut Mcknight & keep Clowney or Coles

  20. avatar LCG says:

apparently, we’re so good we can just turn it on when it starts counting. didn’t you hear? SB champs. hope this team wakes up. haven’t looked very sharp…for most of preseason

  21. avatar jets1974 says:

Cut McKnight right now. Don’t even let him back in the locker room…I can’t see letting Woodhead go to keep this douche.

  22. avatar ziggyd says:

am I the only one that feels like the Jason Taylor signing is like the Glavine signing…his only Hard Knocks highlights is showing up late….making his last paycheck on us…

  23. avatar juunit says:

Honestly, Larry Turner is exactly the kind of player we want McDonald$ to be… except he’s actually shown some ability. He could be the new Leon. Little guy with speed who makes people miss and can also play special teams. Cut McDonald$ and give Turner his roster spot.

  24. avatar WW85 says:

Taylor has been playing great & hard.

  25. avatar Antstiggity says:

Maybe this whole thing with sanchez caking his own plays might be a good idea

  26. avatar eKill says:

time to let McKnight go. This guy isnt an NFL player. Chauncy is so much better

  27. avatar Antstiggity says:

I wouldve liked to see Wilson in there tonight, got a feeling he’s gonne turn heads this year

  28. avatar AL says:

Mcknight is the worst rookie we have drafted in the Tannenbaum era.

  29. avatar jets1974 says:

Ducasse was demolished on that play he was called for holding on…

  30. avatar Wolf says:

Woodhead is playing great tonight ;-)

  31. C.Washington better make this team..

    C.Washington>>>>>> Money

    C.Washington>>>>>> Woodhead

  32. avatar jets1974 says:

    Keep woodhead….cut McKnight…

  33. avatar tomg says:

    C. Washington is definitely better than McNight.

  34. avatar Wolf says:

This years draft class looks terrible. Neither Ducasse or McKnight look like NFL players. Our UDFA’s look better.

  35. As always people will forget the good & remember the bad .. Such is life.. Don’t worry Joe Money I got your back, but right now you gotta give your spot up to my boy C.Washington..

  36. avatar David says:

Anyone notice the offense didn’t look good intill Sanchez starting calling the plays.

    FIRE SCHOTTY

  37. avatar ziggyd says:

we’re going to find out alot about the Jets management…is it all about where you were drafted or how you perform…

  38. Juunit .. Cumberland looks like a player.

  39. avatar Wolf says:

Fair point Ziggy. We will find out soon.

  40. avatar juunit says:

You know what I hate? How all these media people say Greene proved his abilities in the post season. But that isn’t true at all. He proved he was a good running back BEFORE the post season started, they just continued to give Jones the ball anyway.

  41. avatar David says:

Did Sanchez call that last series?

  42. avatar Antstiggity says:

Atleast he held onto the ball this time

  43. avatar Jason says:

The best thing about this game is its the last time I have to hear Greg Buttle on my TV for a full year.

  44. avatar jets1974 says:

I just want to see Gholston get a sack….I could care less if its against the third string….

  45. avatar Antstiggity says:

Hey juunit I was thinking the same thing. Greene was doing well before the playoffs, it’s just that he wasn’t getting the carries enough for them to realize it, he was TEARING it UP

  46. avatar Dave says:

This guy Mcknight is really killing me to watch.

  47. WOODHEAD AND CHAUNCEY WASHINGTON FTW! McKnight is a bum!

  48. Did the announcer just take a shot at Leonhard right before the break? Sure sounded like it…

  49. avatar AL says:

Why cant Gholston grab a sack against the 2/3′s to make us believe. C’mon Ghost!!!!

  50. avatar Benny says:

You have to be *****ing me. McKnight fumbled again?? Good God, WTF! I thought you guys were talking about the last game and then I realized you meant tonight. Sanchez vouched for this guy. Bet he’d like to have back. He has talent but come on!

  51. avatar Woodhead fan says:

Woodhead on the tackle….that’s what I’m talking about

  52. This Money Mcknight hate is crazy.

  53. avatar HHH says:

    What about E. Cook???

  54. Guys will McKnight receive more hate mail after this performance than Justin McCareins got after week 2 in Baltimore in ’07 when he messed up Kellen Clemens’ debut lol

  55. The Eagles broadcast commentators are the Worst… so Boring!

  56. The Jackson kid is pretty good IMO ..

  57. avatar tomg says:

Why does it appear that all the touchdowns in pre season that the Jets gave up were on turnovers. Boy I hope they don’t do this in the regular season, talk about shooting your self in the foot.

  58. avatar HHH says:

watch kellen come in and move the ball!!

  59. avatar MEL31602 says:

Isn’t there a rule that the ground can’t cause a fumble? Or does that not apply in this situation?

    • avatar Bent says:

Not if you aren’t touched by a defender. Had he not fumbled, he wasn’t down, so could have got back up and carried on or crawled on his belly for extra yards until touched.

Freak play, glad it happened in preseason.

  60. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

What a joke the JETS RBs are! Can we run the ball without a fumble!!

I am not impressed withe the JETS depth. Maybe if they weren’t in a penny pinching mood, maybe we would have better depth. And I am not impressed with Brunell.

  61. avatar Antstiggity says:

    Tomg +100000

  62. avatar Woodhead fan says:

Here we go again…woodhead gets the call up the middle!!! GREAT play calls!

  63. Cumberland, Woodhead, Chauncey Washington, and Clowney did okay for themselves in the first half. A certain #25 did not!

  64. avatar David says:

I really want this site to do a review of playcalling! Schotty vs Sanchez!

  65. avatar tomg says:

I think the Jets offense scored more touchdowns for the opposing teams then they did for themselves, sigh.

  66. avatar Shane L. says:

This team has NO depth whatsoever.

  67. Ok, to me RB’s are :
    Tomlinson
    Greene
    Washington
    Connor
    Richardson

McKnight to Practice squad and cut Woodhead, his potential upside is not great, while McKnight’s is

  68. Would this Woodhead mania be as great if he was a 6’0″ guy from USC? Just a thought, but he’s not the 2nd coming of Wayne Chrebet,

  69. avatar MEL31602 says:

I think you guy are overreacting on our lack of depth. The D did great, holding the Eagles to 3 points on a drive that started on a short field. The offense actually moved the ball pretty well, if not for McKnight the score could easily be 10-10 or 14-10 Jets. And I agree with Bent that the Connor fumble was more a fluke play than the Terminator doing anything wrong.

  70. avatar Nick says:

I love Conner, but he dropped the ball. That is doing something wrong no matter the circumstances. We need to work on securing the football.

  71. avatar WW85 says:

    Clemens looks good

  72. Long live Joe Money.. F the haters(sorry Bent)
    *leaves for the night*

  73. avatar Woodhead fan says:

Enough with the freakin draw plays!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  74. Here We Go!!!

    MY MAN CLEMENS~~

  75. avatar WW85 says:

Washington playing great football. Cut MCknight. Keep washinton!

    • Washington is going nowhere. After his Preseason he has earned himself the 3rd Spot.I would also Say What a surprise by Kellen Clemens.I Sware he better be our backup QB if Sanchez goes down.Brunnell was better today but in just 1 drive Clemens made Brunnell look terrible.

  76. avatar ssx tricky says:

    woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooodhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaddddddddddddddd!!!!!!!!11111111111111111111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  77. I think it’s Obvious McKnight is not ready.I wouldn’t cut him though. The potential is still there. We don’t need him to be a key player on this offense this year anyway.I think the Depth Chart looks like this..

    Greene
    LT
    Washington
    McKnight

We can carry 6 RB’s into the Regular season.Woodhead unfortunetly has no Spot on this team.Even if he has a Good game, we have too many RB’s on the roster already.Only way he is here is if he is on the Depth Chart as a Wide Receiver. That would mean the depth chart would look like the following..

    Holmes
    Edwards
    Cotchery
    Brad Smith
    Woodhead

    • avatar WW85 says:

How about the Larry Taylor? I saw Mcknight’s potential watching USC, BUT he is just too much of a headcase for the NFL. I’m not a big Woodhead fan, but honestly-I think Woodhead adds more to the team than Mcknight. Mcknight is a detriment to this team. I can’t imagine him in a live game.

      • Im just saying let’s hold on to McKnight and see how he develops over the course of a season. We probably won’t even use him this season so he has a chance next season to prove he learned from his rookie mistakes.

  78. avatar Nick says:

Rex is going to need to really give them a talking too about securing the damn ball!!!

  79. avatar Antstiggity says:

Can someone post the official count of fumbles this preaseason?

  80. avatar bmack says:

I respect what Mike Tannenbaum has done with the Jets but he is a complete dork. Hard Knocks has exposed his lack of knowledge of the game of Football. He should stick to what he is good at, number crunching, at stop acting like he is an evaluater of talent.

  81. avatar tomg says:

    what a shock, another fumble.

  82. avatar CWPOST1993 says:

    Joe McKnight must go

  83. avatar ssx tricky says:

sooooooooo anyone going to the sb this yr?

  84. avatar Eric in StL says:

look who keeps fumbling- clemens, mcknight, connor, etc. you know- guys who won’t be seeing the ball much. who cares? granted holmes has fumbled, but he has never had a history of that. everyone relax

  85. avatar Eric in StL says:

how about we look at the fact that the starting D has allowed a whopping 1 TD and it was on a 3 play 1 yard drive. jeez guys- it’s pre-season

  86. bent

if mcknight is placed on the practice squad, then does he have to clear waivers or anything first? thanks.

  87. avatar WW85 says:

    Yeah CW: Joe must go!

  88. avatar WW85 says:

Practice club players can sign with any team at any time so waivers would be irrelevant.

  89. avatar ziggyd says:

overachievers win football games underachievers lose them…

  90. avatar MEL31602 says:

If anyone cares Clemens hurt his elbow

  91. I swear if Danny Woodhead was playing like Money Mcknight you people wouldn’t be riding him as hard as you all are riding Money.

  92. avatar Woodhead fan says:

There are so many people who ride Woodhead on this site for no freakin reason…so i wouldn’t go there

  93. avatar WW85 says:

Woodhead would have 0 shot if he played like Mcknight. The only reason Mcknight has any hope is bc we traded for him & he is Sanchez’s buddy. I don’t think Woodhead adds much either. He sucks whenver he plays against 1s.

    • avatar Woodhead fan says:

He’s never given the opportunity to play much against 1s…how do you know?

      • avatar WW85 says:

Last year, he played special teams on occasion & blew coverage on a big play as I recall. But yeah, I guess he hasn’t seen much action as a natural RB/WR against 1s.

    • Yeah he’d have 0 Shot because its his 3rd year and he has a handicap unlike Mcknight who is a rookie whos making rookie mistakes.

      • He’s a nice kid with a boatload of heart. But he is not now, nor will he ever be, a player of consequence.

        • Which One Woodhead or Mcknight?
I Honestly Think Money can develop into a nice player in a Reggie Bush – Ahmad Bradshaw(From The Jacobs-Ward Days) Role.

        • avatar Eric in StL says:

none of these guys really matter- does anyone remember what last preseason was like? we had a rookie QB, a middle of the road D, a new head coach, and we just came off of a major collapse to end the year. everyone analyzing mcknight and woodhead’s potential merits is wasting their time. LT and Greene are fully capable backs with maybe Chauncey as the 3rd stringer. everyone is looking so negatively at the pre-season. the Jets strategy is to wear teams down with their running game and beat them up with the D. the D has looked fine and that’s without the best player and the running game has been getting like 7 ypc. they just haven’t pounded it every time like they do in the regular season. Pace may be back by week 2 and Revis will probably be back before week 1. everyone calm down

      • avatar WW85 says:

I hope you are right about Mcknight. His head just doesn’t seem to be here. I’d love to see his talent come out like the USC-OSU game.

  94. avatar cmonleon says:

man is it me or is buttle the worst ever, i cant stand him.

  95. avatar sweeper says:

I’m not worried about pre-season fumbles.

    And jets dominated this game.

    I don’t understand the negativity

  96. This game kinda proves how we need a new Offensive Coordinator. Brunell hasn’t looked that bad since Mark has been calling plays.

  97. avatar DMazz says:

    The GHOST!

  98. Hahaha an EXPLOSION by Gholston at the end there

  99. Gholston!!!!! Rex is going crazy!!!!!

  100. avatar bob says:

well thats it Jets won yahoo

  101. NOOOOOOOO I MISSED GHOLSTON FIRST OFFICIAL SACK!!!!

  102. avatar Michael says:

yea, Ghost i’ve been waiting so Long for this

  103. Yahoo sports is saying that rev is and his relationship with the jets is ticking toward a end!!!! Not good news I thought there was progress????

  104. HOLY S#IT, VERNON GHOLSTON GOT A SACK!!!!…. YEAH, THAT HURRICANE WILL HIT TOMORROW.

HE GOT A SACK! WOW, THAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF A BORING GAME

Ducasse looked decent. You can see the physical gifts, but let him get mental and he’ll be dominant.

Watching this game reminds me that this team needs to draft. Stop trading up, hold pat and draft. I’m tired of seeing the washed up players and also tired of raping the UDFA. Just draft.

Clemens looks good. No Lie!, he looks big and confident, if he just stops making dumb mistakes like that fumble.

Chauncey Washington reminds me of a poor mans Cedric Benson.. Dont know if he wants to be compared in that light, but he does.

Overall great game, b/c no one got injured, but really boring. Wish Pufftonio Holmes can keep his substance abuse in order, b/c the guy is great.

DID I MENTION THAT GHOLSTON GOT HIS FIRST SACK

  105. Bent, i dont remembet that, please put up a link

  106. avatar Nick says:

Bent, well all forget this one if he has another regular season like last year too!!!

  107. avatar MEL31602 says:

Also Woodhead fans rejoice- Rex just said Danny did enough to make team

  108. avatar Bent says:

Here’s Gholston’s REAL first NFL sack – the one everyone forgot happened.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUw7xfi_LbY

The play in question comes at approximately the 1:55 mark.

  109. avatar Wolf says:

Gholston is here to stay. Excellent game. He wad on all night.

McKnight is practice squad fodder. Woodhead and Washington proved that they both deserve a spot on the roster. I hope they don’t lose their jobs at the expense of McKight, sends the wrong message to the team. Play like a Jet, you’re a Jet. End of discussion.

McKnight will never be a player. Mark my words. He has no passion, no heart. He is a liability.

  110. avatar ziggyd says:

gotta love our depth at QB…
