Hard Knocks Recap: Episode 4 – Cheeseburgers in Dystopia

Note: We’ve lifted a number of videos from our friends at KSK for you to enjoy with Kirk’s commentary. Please patronize KSK and let ‘em know we appreciate their efforts! Beware the videos they are most assuredly NSFW. – Bassett
Last night’s show began at the halfway mark in training camp and, based on the comments by several of the coaches in the opening minutes, progress is half-empty. To quote the narrator at the beginning of the show, “something is missing.” And he’s not talking about Revis.
We first hear from Anthony Lynn, RBs coach, as he’s addressing his squad, noting they are playing flat and that they have enough experience in the room to recognize that and fix it.
Immediately after that, we see Schotty in a coaches meeting saying that the team’s playing without confidence. QBs coach Matt Cavanaugh responded saying, “we have some really talented guys but none of them motivate, vocally, the group.”
After the first two preseason games, we hear Rex ask and answer his own question: “Well what needs to improve? Blocking, receiving, running… other than that we’re pretty good.”
This was a pretty scary way to start the show. So, before we continue I’d figured it’d be nice to show a clip of highlighting Rex’s “hand-picked fullback” John Conner’s mega hits on special teams, which has spawned a new kickoff return scheme by Westhoff titled “Terminator Right.”
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTHYO9C0V-E
And now on to the whole Colishaw incident, as viewed through the management’s eyes.
Revis’ holdout and Colishaw’s Twitter FAIL were addressed in the first six minutes of the show. Tanny and the coaches are all asking why Colishaw is reporting what he is reporting.
“Does he know something I don’t?” we hear Pettine ask.
“I just want to know what the deal looks like,” said Tanny.
From the episode’s framing, ESPN looks very very bad this week, as the coaches keep track of the number of times the story is reported on Sportscenter (and the staff noted it was a lead story on Sportscenter) and questions why 1050 ESPN (the NYC radio station) is reporting that more than one source is saying the same info as Cowlishaw.
After the infamous incident is dropped in the episode, we hear an interesting quote or two from Tanny and Rex regarding Revis later. When talking with Laveranues Coles, we hear Rex say the team needs money for the Revis situation. Then, when talking about how some of the backup players are too expensive and need to be cut, we hear Tanny say “If we pay Mangold, pay Brick and pay Revis, that’s what’s gonna happen.” (Yikes, he didn’t mention my favorite, David Harris). In the interest of joining all the journalists who jump on any tiny bit of info and run with it, I’d like to declare that Revis is getting signed today (PSYCH). That felt…. disturbing. How do these reporters live with themselves?
On a positive note when it comes to contracts, we got a glimpse of celebration and adulation for Mangold after he signed his contract. He gets applause from his teammates when entering the film room the next day as the coaches say “It’s all about you!” Rex tells management he’s worried that Nick’s new contract is “getting to his head” because he saw the center at Taco Bell the night before (side note, between Sanchez’s Taco Bell hat and several references to the fast food franchise, I’m convinced the company, along with Pretzel M&Ms, are sponsoring the show through product placement). Right after Rex’s comment, we see Tanny telling Woody that Nick “really is invaluable” to Sanchez.
The position battle of the week focused on Slauson and Ducasse at guard. It look’s like Slauson has Bill Callahan’s backing, as the O Line coach says his running blocking is solid, although his pass protection is scary. Slauson still has the edge as we hear Tanny ask “Is Ducasse that bad?” We then see him miss several blocks in preseason games where Sanchez gets sacked. In Vlad’s defense, the show points out that he comes from a small school, is transitioning from tackle to guard role and is getting better physically although not mentally. Hopefully, King Ugly will be his name based on looks and not play come the future.
Sanchez’s education continued this week with a prank, as all QBs got binders for their playbook and picked on Mark when he didn’t have one. So he responded like a kid, changing Schotty’s computer desktop image to what appears to be a horse with a very colorful urinary tract.
On top of that, he draws mustaches on the picture frames of Schotty’s kids, which I thought was a little too much. It’s not good when even the coach refers to Sanchez as a big kid and not as a man.
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDqwVuERoTg
The focus on the QB battle showed nothing new. Brunell is the backup, Clemens is being the nice guy who finishes last at the third roster sport and accepts a pay cut. An interesting quote from Clemens, “I don’t want to be overpaid as much as I don’t want to be underpaid… Do I set myself up as a guy who gets pushed over?”
There’s an emotional moment (at least for me) as you see Laveranues Coles walking through the training camp halls and see a montage of some of his amazing catches against the Ravens and Vikings. The team loves him and so does Rex, who is fighting for him to be on the team. Even Tanny said LC came in better than expected.
Rex and Tanny’s interactions are interesting when it comes to players. Rex sees the man, Tanny sees the dollars. “Both are great mentors and they both can still play,” says Rex on LC and Tony Richardson. Tanny responds, saying “T-Rich is tough because of $850,000 guaranteed.”
One player they definitely aren’t cutting, unless he keeps showing up late, is Jason Taylor. The new acquisition in the Big Apple area keeps getting lost. He gets lost driving to the stadium for a preseason game (which oddly had Phil Collins playing during warm ups and stretching, WTF?). He’s then late to a scrimmage at Hofstra University (a game that was an emotional time for those, like my wife, who grew up on Long Island and would stop by the camp to watch the Jets in the past). Even the GPS in his Maserati doesn’t help Taylor get to games on time. Miami must have really, really easy roads to drive around if he can’t find anything in the NYC area.
Speaking of the scrimmage at Hofstra, there were two standout moments that had little to nothing to do with the game.
1. The defense eating eating cheseburgers on the sideline as Santonio Holmes calls them “gangster.”
2. The great takedown by security of the jackass that interrupted the game. You hear Rex saying “send the Terminator” to get him as players shout “He’s resisting arrest!”
The cheeseburger incident did not go over well with Rex, who addressed it in a big speech to the team. Here’s some quotes:
“This team is only going so far if I’m the guy that leads.”
“I’m not a great leader” [my note- I respectfully disagree, sir].
“We ain’t gonna win if it’s all about me.”
“What are we waiting on? Do you want it or not? Do understand there’s a price to pay?”
“I demand that we have fun. There’s a difference between having fun and being a jackass. Defense was being jackass by eating cheeseburgers.”
“Play like Jets and not like some slapdick team… let’s go eat a G*&$amn snack.” Oh how Rex loves his food.
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uc8Uxzoqzj0
Westhoff was happy with Rex’s speech, telling the head coach the team needed it and that he doesn’t “want to be the only one mother f-ing everyone.”
Moving on to the Redskins game, there’s an eerie shot of Pace warming up his leg before the game on a roll device (let’s not talk about what happened to him during the game).
Rex’s best trash talk of the game was at a Redskins player who hit LT late at the end of his big run of the night. “Tackle him at the line of scrimmage… You ain’t gonna tackle anybody, that’s why my brother got rid of your ass.” Someone please chime in and let me know who Rex is mocking. Rex also lashed out at the ref, saying “how about throwing a flag again for nothing?” after the bad call on the fumble.
Jenkins is still being a leader and having fun. When on the field toward the end of the game, we hear him say “Get the ball for the QB, he needs some more work.” Later, he gets rattled by an official pushing his left hip during a play for a better view and we see Jinx thinks it’s one of the linebackers, to whom he get’s a little snippy but then relaxes.
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVz8D_WBJ9k
Bart’s mouth wasn’t running much during this episode, but the coaches were certainly talking about him. “This f$%king Bart guy,” Pettine yells during the personal foul call. As Rex tells Pettine that he told Bart to play with passion, Pettine responds, saying, “There’s a difference between passion and stupid.”
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJXR3StEoqA
After the game, we see Braylon in Manhattan buying scarf, with a Yankees hat and pink shirt on with a pinstripe suit, and freaking out about a gray hair in his beard.
Someone tell me why the show keeps focusing on Brasthon Satele? I know showing him walk past a pizza parlor is funny after Westhoff’s comment that he should just open a pizza place in the Bronx and leave him alone. But seriously, what has this guy done besides have injury concerns and get yelled at by Westhoff?
Note to Jason Taylor: having your kids punch each other in a makeshift boxing ring in their bedroom… probably not a good idea.
The show ends with a montage of players getting cut. The toughest part, for me, was watching Tanny and Rex speak to Lav Coles about his scenario and how the team wants to cut him now an pick him up later.
Good ole LC responds, saying “If anyone understands, I understand. I’m just a thankful i got a chance to walk through the doors.”
Rex wants him back on the team and in front leading, saying “Everyone has so much respect for you, including me. enjoy your little vacation, come back ready.”
O’Connell gets cut and the episode ends.
Next week, we’ll see Rex in a hot tub, calling himself a “silverback.”
Is that something to look forward to? I guess if you are a female gorilla.

Leaders need to step up. You cannot keep players with declining skills and high price tags in this league solely for their leadership.
-
Exactly. Coaches are just challenging the team demanding some veterans step up and take over. What better time than in August.
-
-
You could also see that JT has something in his contract that allows him to come to certain places on his own. Veterans earn that right.
-
also, i remember reading something about living close and the coaches gave him permission to drive instead of going with the team
-
-
T-Rich, Mangold, LT, Cotchery, Holmes. The offense has leadership, they just need to step it up. I am not worried about a lack of leadership at all.
-
Really? Your QB coach and OC says there is a leadership issue but you know better?
-
Well, TJ and Faneca weren’t the only eladers last year. Those guys are leaders, and I’m sorry if I don’t take HK as my football gospel, it’s a 5 minute clip from an entire week.
If the team was that concerned about leadership, they would’ve kept Coles on the roster.
-
-
-
cheeseburger incident, unprofessional?
its football, not accounting. there is nothing wrong with a good ol’ cheeseburger.
-
Lets see you got Cromatie, & Holmes with trading away draft picks
You want the draft picks or the players?
-
And Edwards
-
And Jenkins.
-
don’t forget Favre!
-
-

Rex complimented the depth. He said “that’s how you build a championship team” when talking about it. He basically said you have your frontline guys making big bucks, then find cheap players to fill in, which is what they have.
“And Rex is shocked that ‘ground and pound’ isn’t quite the same”
What did you see that made you think this? He went so far as to say “this is Jets ground and pound football right there” when going over the team’s rushing stats. TURNOVERS is the issue, the team is running wild, I have no idea how you can say that Rex is ‘shocked’ that the G&P isn’t the same, when it is.
-
Hey Bernie…
“- The “cheeseburger incident” couldn’t have come off more unprofessional.”
Agreed. Where is Rex’s laying doing the hammer? A scolding only? Not a good message to rookies.
- Can Jason Taylor at least pretend to care? How is a veteran late to 3 practices because of traffic?
Agreed. Yes, JT deserves a little wiggle room. But he is one of the veterans that should lead be example?
I remember in a past HK episode the RB coach telling T-Rich he could come in late to RB warm ups because he deserved it. I wonder if T-Rich came in early with rookies or late as allowed to.
-
Early.
-
-
The practice thing was unprofessional, but Taylor was late and the guys were eating cheeseburgers because they pushed the practice up 45 or an hour or something because of weather I think.
-
-
“That’s why my brother got rid of your ass” was the best line of the show…
-
It was DeAngelo Hall
-
-
I honestly had no idea Rex had tattoos. Can anyone tell what those are?
-
I’m sorry but Tanny has absolutely no social skills. Did anyone notice the clear difference between how Rex let LC go and Tanny let O’Connel go? (I realize the situation was a little different as well, but still…) O’Connell started getting emotional and Tanny’s just like “Well, see you later”. He’s great on the business side but he definitely needs to learn how to interact with players — even the ones who don’t have a future with the Jets. What a goon.
-
To be fair, you kinda need that type of person in those situations. Rex is an emotional guy, and emotions can get in the way of running a business. That’s where Tanny steps in. It’s harsh and cold, certainly, but he’s obviously comfortable doing it. It’s like a band-aid, just gotta rip it off. This is also not the only time where he tells the guys he’s being cut as he’s sitting down. Dude hasn’t even sat down and he hears it. Cold.
-
You mean, the respect shown to LC, a guy I openly dislike but does deserve respect based on his veteran status and the fact that he isn’t some nobody, and the way a 4th string QB was cut was different?
I actually liked the way Tanny is upfront, no-nonsense, and doesn’t humor or lie to these players.
-
The best front office guys, in any business, remove emotion from their tasks. Tanny needs to be that way..
-
No, JO28 that’s not correct.
You need a balance. Took me many years in mgt. to learn this. I became much more successful once I learned.
At one stop, my predecessor (a Tanny type) lost $400,000 for this small company her last year; my first year, using a Rex/Parcells-esque approach this same group cleared $527,000. Trust me, respect works.
Business is cold, but human beings who populate your business are warm. Both need to be dealt with to be successful.
The irony comes from understanding eventually that taking the human being into account more often allows you the latitude to do more of the harsh but needed aspects of mgt. The more you care for the person, the more you can establish the iron law that business demands. You come across as demanding (which folks respond to well) as opposed to being seen as a dick (which, SHOCK, folks do not respond to well).
Treating LC well cost the Jets nothing. It did nothing to change the harshness of Sayonara. Finis. It’s over. LC ‘got’ it. It ended up being no different than saying “‘Bye,” before the guy hits the chair. It costs you NOTHING to allow the person to walk away with their dignity intact. They know full well how crushing the news is. You gain nothing from treating them like crap in the bargain.
But the humanity that remains for the person doing the letting go is vastly different for those two scenarios.
That’s why the locker room trusts Rex and does not trust Tanny. They’ve seen Rex give guys bad news, and know that he’ll treat them the same way when it’s their turn, as it will be eventually. They also see the way Tanny chits on people and know that’s how THEY’LL be treated when it’s their turn, as well. This goes a lonnnng way to explaining the Revis hostility. He saw the way Tanny treated those whom he wanted to expunge and expected and prepared for full-frontal warfare when it would be his time. And Voila! Here we are. It simply didn’t have to be like this.
You just know that even if Rex has to give you crushing news, he’s going to respect your manhood and your humanity. He knows it sucks — for YOU. Tanny treats you like a nuisance that he just wants to be over. His approach is all about him — the mark of a poor manager — “I don’t wanna do this, so make it easy on ME and get out of here. Don’t make MY job any harder.” We’ve all had superiors like that. Those are the jobs we hate.
Managers such as this often come to bad ends eventually, no matter what other talents they bring to the table.
Branden and any others of you who are on that career path: I cannot urge you more strongly to study Rex’s methods and philosophy. You can translate them very easily into your situation. And flourish.
The Rex type of mgr. tends to sleep better, too…
-
Mike,
Come.On.
LC got that treatment because he’s a veteran and long-time Jet.
O’Connel and the other bottom feeders get quick sendoffs because that’s what low-level players get. Every year of HKs shows this.
What about the Way Tanny treated things with Clemens? Upfront, honest, and telling Clemens what his options are. That’s showing he’s a good manager, one that doesn’t beat around the bush or give false hope.
The LC release was easier because the odds are he’s returning. Rex really likes LC so he sat in for that one. I don’t see the divisive split that you see at all.
-
I disagree, I thought Tanny handled Clemmens poorly, and could have done a much better job.
You can still be in control, but also show some humanity, and be a little sympathetic.
Tanny shows 0 people skills, which is typical for many managers in America (at least the ones I’ve dealt with). The sad thing is people skills can be trained to some extent, and can help a lot.
-
-
-
Agreed. Why let a guy sit down and start thinking there may be a way out of it…just to get his spirit crushed. Mr. T does it the way it should be done. I also like that he doesn’t BS a guy.
-
-
-
I dont know what you been watching ,but the running game looks good .as for JT veterans that old dont take camp that serious .they know what to do and his record speaks .plus he is playing in the same division hes played his whole career .the jets will be fine .maybe the whole thing is a show to fool everybody then they come out and steam roll everybody.Cause the dfense is there LT is playing great remember curtis martin at 31 led the nfl in rushing and he to wants to prove all wrong.
-
Think the ref was out of line pushing Jenks when he is set—think maybe he should move?
-
In the age of booty, who WOULDNT want to tap Jenkins’ ass?
-
LOL!
-
-
-
I’ll keep in mind that this is primetime television, it can be shaped to look like the jets are the most prepared team in the league or the least. With that being said ;
-I would like for Sanchez to man up a little bit, this has nothing to with the clowning around with Schotty’s computer. This has everything to with his in game joking, aswell as his shakey voice in the huddle. The QB is the leader, he’s got to be more assertive. I don’t picture Matt Stafford acting like Mark does(pure speculation). Please none of that he’s a kid crap, people use that stupid, aged excuse far too often(Revis supporters), these dudes are grown men whether they know it or not.
- Shotty is an idiot. That “we need to have fun” comment during the game is something some inexperienced OC would say. WTF
-I luv our DC
-Rex should run a tighter ship, you don’t chew your team out & then say let’s get a snack. C’mon with the jokes already.
I could go on but like I said, editors are like magicians, the can make me see whatever they wish too.
-
I’m tired of hearing people say stuff about Faneca and TJ being leaders…That is great but at somepoint they won’t be there anyway even if they aren’t cut…So what do you do then. Basically what the coaches are saying is hey we need to find our new Leaders….So Sanchez needs to step up even more, maybe someone like Mangold who seems like one of the most respected on the team by everyone…Santanio Holmes seems like that type of guy as well, but he won’t be here for the first 4 weeks. On Def it is obvious Bart and Big Jenks are the leaders.
-
Firstly, fantastic episode. Many interesting things to see. The behind-the-scenes reaction of the FO regarding the Revis signing rumor was great. The drama was Kellen and LC was great. Rex’ pre-game speech was great.
Unfortunately, this episode revealed the myriad problems facing the Jets as we head into the season. The offense needs to get it together, and we are all nervous about that LG position. I know it’s early, but Vlad looks useless. Also, Sanchez needs to grow up. What’s up with all of the nail biting? He looks like a nervous child; not a team leader. Also, I can’t believe there was even a discussion about letting go of T-Rich considering the leadership this team has already lost.
-
Pretty sure that was #23 Deangelo Hall that Rex was barking at after LT got hi-lowed. He was cut by the Raiders after signing a huge deal and I think Rob Ryan was the D coordinator at the time.
-
no that was in oakland
-
the raiders are in oakland
-
oops for some reason my mind read ravens. my bad
-
-
-
-
Rex Ryan to DeAngelo Hall: “That’s why my brother got rid of your ass”
-
I Died laughing when Rex said that because I already knew who he was talking about.
-
-
I like Dave Harris as much as anyone but ILB’s are a dime a dozen. Great man-to-man cover corners, and Good Lineman are pretty hard to come by.
I understand the Jets thinking honestly I just hope they find a way to keep Dave here though.-
I’m admittedly biased, but Harris is not a dime a dozen ILB. He lead the team in tackles last year and is a perennial monster. Other teams value him. Remember when the Broncos wanted him for Marshall?
-
Wow, missed this comment. GL, I’m sorry, but no. Just no.
-
-
I have to say, the whole leadership issue is really starting to worry me. The Jets let go of a lot of vocal leaders, and Rex insisted that chemistry wouldn’t be a problem. Its a little disheartening to see the coaches question if there is enough leadership on the team. Here are a couple things that I got from the episode:
- Santonio Holmes is really good
- The Jets are really trying to cut costs
- The Jets are still planning on signing Revis
- The Jets miss TJ and Faneca in the locker room
- Clemens is a great guy
- Rex has an enormous crush on John Conner
- Conner is ahead of Richardson on the depth chart-
I wouldn’t be surprised though if a lot of teams face that predicament every training camp. New guys coming in and replacing veterans. There has to be a meshing period. This is what practice is for, you iron out those uncertainties. They just want some people to step up and show the initiative.
We still have plenty of leadership with Jenkins, Scott, T-rich, Woody, J-co, hell even LT.
-
I agree, and I think that the team will be fine. Some of the vets need to step up and hold the other players accountable though.
-
-
They’re not questioning if there are leaders on the team, they even said they know there are. They are challenging these leaders to step up, because to this point they’ve been pretty passive.
-
I think that this team is gong to be fine, but that is a little bit worrying. We all know that their are great vets such as Ellis, Tomlinson, Jenkins, Scott, Richardson, etc. Its important though that someone really steps up and takes control of the locker room, like TJ and Faneca did last year.
-
T-Rich was the most vocal person on the team last year (lead the chants, pre-game speeches, etc.), I can’t imagine him not being vocal now. It’s confusing, really.
-
-
+100
everyone should just chill… those are effects of having cameras in the locker room and seeing day to day interactions of players-coaches… all those statements are more motivational then an indication of a problem, obviously statements must be cued of somthng or they will not have desired effect
-
-
-
i’m not worried about the lack of leadership. guys like mangold and brick just have to step up and be more vocal, especially since they signed new deals and will be on the team for the long term. not to mention j-co, t-rich and tomlinson.
defense? i dont think there is any lack of leadership there with jenks, bart, leonhard and revis when he comes back.
-
Conner is a beast! This kid is gonna be great.
-
Hey does anyone have the link to the stream again? (I hate not having HBO)
-
please, me too. Im in costa rica and hbo is different here
-
-
The concerns around leadership, depth, etc are what alot of us were thinking/saying months ago. I’m sure the coaches knew then as well but it makes you wonder why they did not have different strategies around drafting, roster management, etc. With the season 2 weeks away, they are handcuffed and my concern since even the middle of last yr is the team just is not good enough. Add an injury, or two in and I sure hope this isn’t another disappointing year…
-
Bernie McBurns – Sanchez would have been driven into the ground harder had Faneca been in there. He’s as bad a pass blocker as he is a good run blocker. Did you see Jetsblog’s analysis of all the players we let go? He’s the only former player WITH a sack! he might be a leader, but he’s a washed-up one. Slaussen will be an upgrade (just like he was last year when Faneca WASN’T on the line).
The season hasn’t started yet, someone will definitely step up and fill the void. There’s too much pride on this team for someone not to get inspired. As Rexie said at the after the first practice (post Gints game), he’s a coach that will immiediately identify a lack of hustle. It’s being addressed now, in preseason, before we have that first snap against Blatimore.
Why do I have a feeling Holmes is going to get hurt in tonight’s game? Anyone, please, tell me I’m crazy…
-
At least he’ll have 4 weeks to heal. Seriously though injuries IMO are the toughest part of the game. You don’t know when they are going to happen and pretty much out of your control (except for conditioning). When it happens to key players it can ruin your season. Think what the Colts would be like without Manning.
-
-
What I found interesting was when Shotty goes to Rex we have to be like the defense and just have fun out there. We do better when we play looser. I hope Shotty sticks to the plan, it seemed to work.
-
The best way to keep the offense loose is first-drive/second-drive points. A first quarter TD and the team knows it just gave itself a tremendous shot at a win. Early struggles and that unit will tighten up like a ________.
-
-
I have to say this was the best episode in my opinion this season. It was also the most revaling and most emotional episode. How can you not feel sorry for Clemens and Coles. If anything I have become a Kellen Clemens supporter after this episode.I really hope he is our 2nd string QB and hope he does well in the event Sanchez goes down.
-
Clemens has always shown he is a class act.
-
True, but the part where he said, “what if I don’t take it?”and “How soon” kind of told me he was really disapointed the way his career has gone and its sad to see him swallow his pride and take the offer that was on the table.
-
As was Pennington.
-
(a class act)
-
-
-
-
Let’s Try this again.. This is primetime TV, the show can be shaped to make the Jets look like the most prepared team in the NFL or the least. With that being said;
-Sanchez has to man up little, drawing on your OCs pictures is cool and all but during the game I demand a no nonsense attitude. Why the hek are you telling Rex and Schotty about Braylon calling you fat ? C’mon dude, and it wouldn’t hurt to be a little more assertive in the huddle. For some reason I picture Stafford being more of a leader, and please none of that “Marks a kid” crap, dude is a grown man.
-Schotty is an idiot. That “we need to have fun” comment he said to Rex during the game is something a scared rookie OC would say imo.
-Our DC is on point at all times.
-Rex has to run a tighter ship, you don’t chew your team out & then say let’s go get a snack. Enough already.
-I could go on, but I won’t
The Editors are magicians, they can make us see whatever they want to but nonetheless we have some things that need to be fixed. I didn’t like what I saw.
-
totally agree with your commentary with respect to coaches…. scary
-
Teams have a scheduled snack the night before a game. It’s funny that he ended with that, but that was a scheduled part of their day.
-
-
Anyone else disgusted by Sanchez’s brattyness? He’s 23 going on 16 i feel like..
I wonder what Parcells would be saying to him right about now.
-
He’s a brat? The older players, and coaches, play pranks on him. He pranks them back. I think the rest of the team/coaches like him for being youthful and fun. And as they’ve said over and over, no one on the team studies as much as he does. He wants to be a great NFL QB for this team more than anything else, and that’s what matters. Not the fact he likes to piss off his coordinator, who likes to piss Sanchez off right back.
-
I think you are just mistaking his personality, for immaturity. Favre is the same way, and he is one of the best QB’s to ever play the game.
-
and Jason Taylor’s lateness pisses me off too.. what a douche..
-
-
I know HK as part entertainment…
However, I believe what was very scary was Shotty’s comments about having the offense having fun. Shotty’s been around the team for awhile and one year under Rex and only now conceding to being on the team’s same page? Wow.
I hope the next “seeing the light” happens sooner than later.
Maybe he should reexamine his approach to developing Sanchize.
-
Ok… so Schotty saying “man, when we’re having fun we play better, when we’re tight we’re (fart noise)” means he isn’t on the same page as the rest of the team?
This is the one part of HK that I hate. A 20 second clip shows this and people make wild assumptions off of it.
And what does that have to do with Sanchez developing?
-
Yes, it is entertainment. I hate some of the sound clips too. I will give maybe 1/3 of what we see to be actual truth. I try not to overreact.
Sanchez development is dependent (partly) on coaching.
The following Shotty points concern me (all subjective)
- Shotty’s overall approach to Sanchize
- Shotty’s game planning. I think he takes a more reactive approach than a proactive approach. Color coding plays and Rex’s involvement late in season make me speculate that Shotty needs development himself.
-
Schotty developed Drew Brees and Philip Rivers, he knows what he’s doing in this regard.
-
-
-
I looked at that differently. I think he’s just trying to help Sanchez learn that he needs to relax.
-
-
Ditto to Matt’s question about a link

The part about if they sign Mr. Diva they will have to cut cost with other players verify what I posted the other day and that is nothing has changed since Mr. T stated on hard knocks that there is nothing else he can do to sign Mr. Diva. Mr. Diva thinks that by holding out regular season games is going to change Mr. T’s mind is fooling himself. I suggest Mr. diva get rid of those two moron agents and get somebody else because he will kill his career.

If anyone missed Hard knocks here it is

Thanks JayM!!!

Loved the show last night but Tanny is really starting to bug me. Maybe because, for whatever reason, he reminds me of the snot nose kid Paul Jr from American Chopper.
And what is with the Richie Rich couches in his office?
-
Funny I always liked Paul Jr over the old man lol

Thanks JayM!

This was a motivational tool. The team is not playing badly. Most of what you see is set up anyway. They have played very vanilla, and they want to see what the backups do. To get insight into who gets cut and the tough job of letting people go is as real as it gets. It is interesting though that players who were once dominate at the end of their careers now walk a much different walk.

Repeat post, fits better on this thread;
Random thoughts during Hard Knocks.
It is very easy to continue to hate Jason Taylor.
No discipline on this team, for all the bluster of the coaches the vets seem to take it as a big joke.
No leadership on offense? Shocked. Should have thought about that in the offseason.
Which is a real indictment of Sanchez, who just looks like a pouty high school kid in the meetings, nail chewing, flip flopping down the hall during recess. Not a good vibe from this kid.
Clemens is class, hope he plays great tonight, someone notices, and some QB needy team decides to take a shot and trade for him so he gets the shot he deserves.
After all this publicity, tonights game is huge for him, be interesting to see how he reacts to the spotlight, hopefully not like a deer.

As for leadership, Sanchez has to be the man and he just doesn’t seem to have that personality, still immature, trying too hard to fit in, it seems.
It could just be the cameras, but I do not see the “it” that he allegedly has.
Last years vocal leaders were TJ, Faneca, T Rich and perhaps Woody.
T Rich was huge in this regard but has to be on the field for it to matter, and his playing time figures to be reduced, in fact his career in jeopardy, so he may not feel it right now.
Mangold, Brick, Moore, LT, Shonn, Cotch are fairly mellow dudes.
Holmes is still feeling his way, and I havent seen enough of Braylon to know if he has that in him.
I think Keller has it but he too is not an every down player.
Sanchez needs to step up, sure thats what they meant.
-
Sanchez is having way to much fun and is immature. I would like a lil more serious attitude out of sanchez hes actually annoying sometimes

WOJF well put!

I have been trying hard to get behind the Taylor move, but I’ve given up. Watching that douche in his Maserati and constantly showing up late was getting me PO’d. Memo to twinkle toes: If you know your navi sucks, they have these things called “Maps”. Regional varieties are sold near checkout at almost every 7-11 in the United States. My 7-year old son can read a map…it just ain’t that hard, even for someone who probably only attended three college classes in his life.
Definitely concerning about the supposed lack of leadership on offense, but am curious if this is only limited to the offense? Granted, it started with Anthony Lynn and Matt Cavanaugh’s comments about the offense, but then Rex addressed these concerns to the entire team, and Westhoff, who is the ST coach, commended Ryan for saying it, stating “they needed it”. Just seemed like these might be leadership concerns beyond just the offense, though it’s hard to believe that with vocal guys like Scott and Jenkins on defense, they would lack leadership.
Regardless, it has to be Sanchez. It can’t be Richardson all of the time. Mark is the leader of the offense…he’s not a rookie anymore. It’s time for him to step up and take charge of this team, of this offense.
In watching the preview of next week, will be interesting to see who Ryan was referring to when they showed him saying “when the lights came on he pissed down his leg”. They immediately panned to McKnight…I wonder if he’s in danger of not making this team? Not likely, but Ryan has said himself that sometimes the pro game is just too big for some guys.
-
I saw the same thing. It may have been the way it was edited, but the coming attractions clips seemed to go further than that—suggesting that McKnight was headed for the Practice Squad.
-
-
well it’s obvious that they have been planning for this holdout for awhile and the faneca cut makes a lot more sense…no way theyre gonna pay faneca 8 mill or w/e he was owed knowing they had to pay brick, mangold, and revis this offseason

The problem concerning leadership is that it came from the veterans last year. But how long are you going to keep veterans that are losing their skills just to be leaders? The Jets need the younger players to start stepping up and become leaders of this team. It will take time but it will happen.
-
Sanchez did look like he was about to cry when Rex made the speech about somebody being a leader. He took it to heart because he knows HE needs to be that leader. That shows how serious he takes his position.
Next game he gets hurt and stays in the game to lead a drive for a touchdown.
Remember everyone that these clips they take are from the whole training camp and things that happened in the beginning are being shown now to help fill gaps. So you really dont get the clue on how people respond to these things. but,
Personally i have no problem with the fun Sanchez has. We all know he works hard.
All work and no play, is not a good way to go about things.
-
Big fan of Rex Ryan and the Jets but his exchange with DeAngelo Hall seemed to cross the line from harmless sideline banter to a personal attack. Talking tough doesn’t make you tough —–> http://clicky.me/1VaS
-
Rex looks like hes been smoking something in that hot tub pic. I think Hard Knocks is making Rex a little immature at times, but thats editing like someone else said.
-
*look

This was the most frustrating episode to watch.
- They are just realizing they have no leaders? How many of us openly questioned the wisdom of letting Jones and Faneca go, for exactly this reason…
- Along the same lines, we also questioned letting Faneca walk with no proven guy to fill the void. And Rex is shocked that ‘ground and pound’ isn’t quite the same, and Sanchez is getting driven to the turf?
- Why is Tannenbaum having the pay-cut discussion with Clemens instead of Brunell?
- The “cheeseburger incident” couldn’t have come off more unprofessional.
- Can Jason Taylor at least pretend to care? How is a veteran late to 3 practices because of traffic?
- Rex was complaining about our depth… well, gee, your GM trades away half your draft picks every year. You figure it out.
