I Hope He Pays in Rolls of Pennies

by Bassett on September 2nd, 2010 at 12:00 pm

In case you were wondering what Revis’s fine totals were so far … A-Schef breaks out the calculator.

  1. Adam Schefter
Adam_Schefter For those keeping score, Jets CB Darrelle’s Revis’ 31-day fine total is now up to $512,213. And counting.

wow the Jets are making money…

  2. avatar C Low says:

BTW…what was all that crap last night on Hard Knocks with cameras being allowed into financial discussions?

I thought this was an uncapped year? Why are they tweaking the roster for 2010 1 year 2nd and 3rd stringers? No cap = no worries for 1 year deals…or so I thought. and what was all that BS about needing that $$$ for Revis? How does that apply for one year deals like Clemens and other back-ups? Somebody explain this to me….because now I’m starting to get pissed off with this. Its as if Fred Wilpon owns the Jets.

  3. avatar diem says:

It’s cool because he’ll probably put it in his contract that they have to give that money back

    • avatar DanF says:

Actually, If all he wants is bragging rights that he is the best and highest paid corner in the league, why not pay him $16.5 Millon like he wants, but retroactively change the terms of the fines to $4.5 Million dollars for his holdout, and voila! He gets his $16.5M and title of highest paid corner, but it only costs the Jets $12M, becuase he has to give back $4.5M. After next year, What’s his name’s contract in Oakland will end and cornerback prices will come back down to earth, and they can negotiate a new contract based on the real world.

Bent, you have an in with Tanny and Rex, Right? Forward this to them ASAP!

  4. avatar Ed L says:

it is still a business and they do have a budget whether you people believe it or not…

money doesnt grow on trees for you nor the Jets…

i mean come on be realistic…

and bassett am i getting the vibe that you are upset that revis is getting fined by the jets..

“I hope he pays in rolls of pennies?”

i am sorry but if i held out of my job if i had three years left on a contract for more money i would most likely be fired…

and not for nothing tanny is right…you cant pay everyone…i mean lets be realistic

    • avatar starz31 says:

The fine doesnt really mean much though. Any contract that he signs is going to cover that. He’s already been fined more than half of what he’s due to make this season, but thats going to change with a new contract.

      • Starz, you are assuming there is a deal. I think there is a good choice there will not be a deal. If that is the case, Revis will owe the Jets the fine, interest on it, if he decides to play under his current contract next year.

    Pay Revis’ bonus in pennies…

  6. Jets1974 – +1

I hope they make him go to the bank and stand in line himself to get those rolls of pennies.

He is a smart, incredibly talented CB and a stupid dewschbag as a person.

  7. avatar Big Mark says:

Talk about his contract negotiations Adam, who cares about the fine.

  8. avatar bob says:

HOT ITEM IN NY THE FANS LOVE IT and their selling like hot cakes..SOMEONE IS SELLING JETS SHIRT WITH A TARGET ON IT………..

  9. avatar OMG says:

At this rate, if Revis holds out through the last game (January 2nd) he will incur a total fine of $2,544,542.
I say let’s do this again next year, and the year after, and the year after that.
The guy will eventually lose everything he’s earned and have to live in his uncle’s guest house for the rest of his life.
    Way to go Mevis.

    • +1

That’s what makes this holdout so ridiculous, that he has so many years left on his contract. He must really believe that the team will cave, I hope they don’t.

    • avatar Bent says:

Firstly, I am pretty sure that the fines only apply for offseason mandatory activities. He doesn’t continue to get fined during the season, he just loses his game check each week ($60k or thereabouts). That’s how I understand it anyway.

Also, I am not 100% sure about this, but I think Revis is only fined when there is a team activity, which means he doesn’t get a fine when there’s a day off and therefore Schefter may be overstating the level of fines charged to date. I think I previously calculated the maximum penalties based on my understanding of the rules to be about 435k.

    • avatar azjetfan says:

Totally agree…I really dont think we need him this year..we have enough talent & Rex.

  10. avatar Mike Jones says:

I think it is time to issue Revis a 72 window to sign the Jets current offer or it will be pulled & he will have to play for his current deal.If he does not come in we just have to look at it as player lost to injury this time it is a severe greed break, out for 3 years.

  11. avatar Carlito7 says:

Isn’t it ironic that the jets released just about all of their core leaders and now they are having leadership problems. Ignorance is bliss.

  12. avatar karl hungus says:

I want them to tell Mevis to sit it out…then next year, offer the same contract Mevis turned down to Asmounga and sign him…then let Mevis stew that for another year or two, and then see what happens….

If he isnt signed in time to start the Ravens game, he is dead to me…..

  13. avatar juunit says:

I’m assuming that he must pay the fine before he is allowed to step onto the field again?

  14. avatar Carlito7 says:

That hole cheeseburger sh@#, if Thomas Jones, Fanaca were here I doubt that would of taken place.

  15. If we can agree to shut down the Revis watch at the start of the season we only have 11 days left of this BS.

As others mentioned, I’m also concerned about the lack of team leadership cited on Hard Knocks by Rex and other coaches. Despite his tired legs at the end of last season, TJ was a bear in the clubhouse and his ability to fire up others will be missed unless someone steps up on offense. Scott does it for the “D.”

My last concern is that the Jets didn’t know the suspension rules for Holmes. Who’s job is it: Tanny, Rex? Reporters shouldn’t be the ones to let the Jets know that Holmes can train with them and participate in team meetings, but can’t practice and of course play in games while suspended. Both Tanny and Rex should know this so Holmes can be effective when he plays in Week 5.

Maybe the front office is too lax?

  16. avatar Steven says:

no matter how much we want the revis watch to end we cant live without it, he is a key role in the best defense, i know im tired of all the false reports of him coming back but when i turn on ESPN and see MultiRevisaire, i know it’ll all be worth it

There might be a media blackout between the Jets and Darrelle Revis, but that hasn’t stopped his grandmother from speaking her mind.

“For this to be happening to him, it’s almost like a slap in the face, because he’s not appreciated,” Revis’ grandmother, Aileen Gilbert, told ESPN.com about his 33-day holdout.

Gilbert spoke from Aliquippa, Pa., where Revis has spent part of his summer. Though the All-Pro cornerback no longer was there, she said he certainly wasn’t on his way back to the Jets.

“I think he’s comfortable with his decision [to hold out] because he knows what he was told by the Jets and he knows what he’s worth,” Gilbert said.

“People are trying to portray him as greedy, but he has outperformed his contract. For them to put him in this position is just unreal.”

Revis reportedly wants a 10-year, $160 million contract and the Jets reportedly have offered 10 years, $122 million, along with shorter-term deals.

Sean Gilbert, Revis’ uncle, held out for an entire season while with the Redskins, forcing a trade to the Panthers that landed him the big contract he wanted.

“If he does (sit out the season), it won’t be because of Sean,” Aileen Gilbert said of Darrelle. It’ll be because the Jets don’t give him a decent contract.”

Frankly the whole Revis/Gilbert family is nuts if they think $122 million over 10 years is not respecting him. Frankly, Comartie has looked good playing Revis’s CB position so I am thinking that Revis is a product of Ryan’s system. In my opinion he is greedy!
I hope he signs. But if doesn’t, I hope the JETS make him sit out for 3 years and then let him see what he is worth?

  18. Don’t know how old Granny is but I don’t think she knows the difference between 122 Mil and 160 mil. maybe she thinks it’s dollars and cents. Let him sit for the next 3 years and see what kind of contract he’ll get then! The Jets will get along with-out him. No one is INDISPENSIBLE in this world. As someone said a lot of teams have won the SB, without Mevis. GO JETS!!!

  19. avatar tomg says:

Screw Mr. Diva, enjoy your 3 year vacation.

  20. I couldn’t agree more. It’s over if granny got the word that $122M is an insult. Revis would have you believe that you can sit the rest of the starting 11 on defense and he will shut them out.

I now know why we were able to win without Jenkins last year; Revis was on the field! And all along I thought it was because our subs stood up and Rex adjusted our defense to accommodate a different level of skills.

What really irks me is the reporters ignoring the fan’s side of this. They always take the players side because they’re afraid the players will cut them off if they disagree with the coverage.

  21. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

I agree, let him sit for next three years. Actually on September 13th, i would announce that if an agreement isn’t reached in 5 days, all offers will be pulled off the table.

bent – Isn’t there still a category that they can put him in that disqualifies him for entire year?

    • avatar Bent says:

I guess they could suspend him, but that would be cutting off the nose to spite the face and would damage their reputation as an employer for prospective free agents in future.

      • avatar Nick says:

So there is no IR type situation they can use?

        • avatar Bent says:

          Not if he’s not injured.

What’s the point? He’ll be on a reserve list, won’t take up a roster spot and will be an asset to the team if be ends his holdout, so I don’t see what harm it does to keep that option alive.

          • avatar Nick says:

my thought here is that the jets could speed up the decision process if they let him know they intended to end his season if he doesn’t sign before week one/
