Remember Rex’s first presser, when he told reporters that he was going to “Keep It Likeable and Learnable”?
Mike Lombardi writes on NFL.com that the Jets need to be cautious not to throw too much too fast at their wunderkind, Mark Sanchez, by using the cautionary tale of Rick Mirer.
What the Jets must learn from Mirer is that they cannot expand the offense in Sanchez’s second year. They must err on the side of caution in terms of offensive design. Sanchez is too inaccurate to create a wide-open offense. Limiting his inside throws by running the ball more often is what will make Sanchez most effective. Sanchez must be managed and it is Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer’s job to make sure the offense is Sanchez-friendly, not expansive.
The second year is the make-or-break year for young quarterbacks. With 16 games worth of tape to study, every defensive coordinator will have a good read on their weaknesses and exploit those areas. Teams have a read on Sanchez now. They will play him in a certain style and manner, thus forcing him to play outside his comfort zone. Once Sanchez proves he can play that way, his career will take off, but if he fails to handle the challenge, things will get dicey.
Rex has given every indication that this offense will still run a lot, but the addition of a guy like Santonio Holmes and the removal of Thomas Jones and Alan Faneca would seem to betray that statement. I know Schottenheimer loves detailed and nuanced offense, but I get the feeling that sometimes he gets a little wonkish with his offense, and I am concerned that he yet again lose the forest for the trees. If you remember, it took Rex sitting in on his meetings to dial it back last year.
I don’t know that I completely agree with what Lombardi is writing, but I do think that if the offense sputters, I wouldn’t be afraid to dust off the ol’ Colored Wristband Days of 2009.

I hope a lot of you people are not doctors

yeah, yeah, yeah Lombardi….doom and gloom etc…

I think the main point here is something I have been saying for a while. The success of the Jets offense this season will depend on Schottenheimer’s playcalling and specifically how he handles Sanchez. He must put Sanchez in a position to be successful while not asking him to do all the things that a 5+ year vet would, similar to how things worked in the playoffs. Of course this is a tall order since opposing coaches and defense know this. It’s all on Schottenheimer to find the right balance and not put too much on Sanchez too soon.
-
Bassett,
I don’t see how dropping Faneca and Jones and picking up Santonio betrays a ground and pound type offense when we pick up LT and a RB, FB, and o-line man in the draft. Sanchez has not thrown more than 25 times in the preseason, and hasn’t been throwing deep either. He’s made mistakes, but he’s clearly learning.
-
Bassett—
it’s not the complexity of the offense that should be a concern for Sanchez—it’s his focus. Judging bythe first three season games, MS looked tight and less focused than he should have been. His best drive of the preseason (which was, for the most part, against the D’s #2s) was the drive that ended with a Keller TD. Last night on HK, we saw Rex talking to Sanchez before he started that drive, getting the kid’s head in the game, getting to have fun, and to lead.
If we’re gonna win this season, this is what Rex is going to have to do with our kid QB, series after series, game after game: make Sanchez focus, and in just the right way. In other words, RR has to ride the kid, he has to be a voice in his head, over and over and over again—so that Sanchez doesn’t go flat, doesn’t lose focus.
This is what Rex did late last season, and it worked. If RR does it again this season, Sanchez should play the way he did last year down the stretch and in the playoffs.
-
I just got it! The RR on the chair in Tanny’s office is for Rex Ryan, RR, not Richie Rich. Rex has a designated place in Tanny’s office. Cute.
-
Ben, I’m in total agreement. The problem is Sanchez’s inability to read defenses consistently & also his relentless desire to stare down receivers. It’s not because he’s a second year player. He just doesn’t seem to “get it” yet.
BUT I also don’t think he will get better unless he learns from his mistakes. I guess the answer is that he should be given free rein in practice but the game calls are more conservative.

I don’t know that Sanchez is the problem with the INT’s.
Schotty has now had 4 different starting QB’s in his system, all of whom have had a bad TD/INT ratio. Even the ultra-conservative Chad Pennington had a bad TD/INT ratio in this system.
There’s a decent amount of evidence to suggest that one or more of the above are true.
a) Schotty’s system is INT prone at it’s core.
b) Schotty’s play calling is INT prone.
c) Schotty doesn’t do a good enough job of teaching his system, resulting in a high number of INT’s.-
I have never liked Schottenheimer. At least we have Rex for defense.

Schotty sucks all 3 statements are true

I respect Lombardi’s opinion a lot, he seems to be spot on with a lot of his observations. The part that concerned me the most was that Mark is never going to be a very accurate QB. His Comp % was pretty bad in a lot of games, but when you watched them I never really thought of him as a guy who misses his open receivers, just seems to take some shots, etc. Wasn’t he touted as an accurate guy coming out of USC(65%)? Now he’s a lifetime inaccurate guy after one year?
-
I’m not concerned about Sanchez the way some of these ‘writers’ are. Sure, Sanchez played below the DVOA last year. Sure, no QB who played below the DVOA in his first 2 years ever amounted to anything in the NFL. However, I can’t remember the last QB that entered the league after playing only one full season in college. Not to mention USC runs a spread offense.
Sanchez is young, and if he stayed in the program, this would be his rookie year.
With that said, I still believe in the color code system. He’s just not there yet.
-
Compelling argument KRR.
-
The problem isn’t complexitiy its dumb play calling he thinks hes tricking people I can call a shotty game any day. He will always throw out the 3rd and long draw everytime the second and 2 reverse and first play from scrimmage bomb that ends with a pick. He’s extremely predictible. Your trick plays ARE sapposed to trick people. But not shotty
-
Who runs on 3rd and long?
-
well in all fairness a lot of teams run on 3rd and long. Sometimes its used to create space when your in your own territory so your not punting out of your endzone or goal line. Its a low risk fairly low reward play that works perfectly early in the game. So really its a field position tactic used by teams with good D’s. I dont know but that sounds like us.
If I also might add, LT has picked up I believe 2 first downs on 3rd and longs both on draw plays.

If Revis was in camp from day one, we would hear much more on topics of Sanchy and Shotty. Reporters would have to develop some angles, and after 3 preseason games there would be much more on “Where is Sanchy in his development?”. Now many are busy talking “Can Jets win without Revis” and shotting down “he almost signed” reports.
-
If Sanchez can avoid telegraphing his passes like he did on the Hall INT last week, he can have a very good year, color-coding or not.
-
FWIW, the ESPN “experts” just released their picks. While most did pick the Jets to at least make the playoffs, there were some who left them out of the playoff picture altogether. And not a single one of them picked them to win the AFC Championship, yet alone win the SB.
-
good, that’s the way i like it.
-
Its amazing what a Revis holdout can do to a teams expectations. Before the Holdout, we were picked to win the AFC East and be a Superbowl contender. Now Revis holds out and we are barely a playoff team? They didn’t even factor in that Revis will probably be playing in week 1 anyway. So what changed this offseason that changed their minds?I Don’t get it.What I can’t understand is how they are being hipocrits. All of them are saying we are concidered the favorites and yet most people are picking the Patriots to win the division.
The Revis holdout is blinding everyone from the Good offseason we had.
-
I really don’t think Revis will be playing in week 1 (or even 2)

Sorry that we are starting the season early , with the Shotty sux theme but it’s true.
I praised the man in the playoffs(wife asking me of he’s not the guy I hate) only for him to go clueless after Greene went down. Schotty is this teams true weak link. I don’t care who’s QB, this offense should be 3X better.
-
I CANT WAIT FOR THE JETS TO FIRE BRAIN SCHITTY,I CANT STAND HIM AND HIS PLAYCALLING,AND HIS SYSTEM,THE DUDE NEVER PLAYED IN TE NFL AND HAS NO EXPERIENCE WHAT SO EVER,HE SIMPLY LIVES OFF HIS FATHER’S NAME,WE NEED A REAL PROVEN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR,I WISH WE CAN GET JIM FASSEL IN HERE OR BRIAN BILLICK,THESE DUDES ARE OFFENSIVE GENIUSES,I HOPE HE GETS FIRED AFTER THIS SEASON,THAT WOULD BE MY SUPERBOWL
-
JOEYTHEJET, you speak true. Schotty is a terrible OC.
-
-
Why is dropping thomas jones and going to a guy that is younger and can pound the ball the more due to his age…This kid will be a beast…I’m so tired of hearing this…Younger is better in this league when it comes to certain positions. As long as there isnt a dropoff…your talking about a kid that touched the ball a lot in college and didnt have issues with injuries so don’t give me that as a fear
-
Joythejet, that would mean a awful season for my team. Don’t want him gone that bad yet. When we start losing on his account…..
-
Another season to Prove Everyone WRONG.We did it last year and we can do it again.I prefer this way because it gives the Jets Motivation to win.The fact that Everyone is doubting us is good for the team.Jets are a good team and WE know that. They are being overlooked and teams will be sorry they don’t take us seriously.
-
Just let the season start already, I’m tired of these non stories writers throw out there
-
I’m not sure if this is Schotty, but I like that the Jets have been converting 3rd/4th and short situations by pounding the run.
-
Well for anyone who thinks the media is buying what the Jets are selling, check out the Espn reporters, bloggers etc…and their predictions.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/preview10/news/story?id=5493278
This is fine with me, because none of these guys ever get it right, so I’m ok with no one picking the Jets to get to the Super Bowl.
-
On the other side of this argument, you have the greatest player in the history of the franchise saying open it up. Namath was doing interviews last week saying how he wished the Jets weren’t just dictating which receiver would get the ball pre-snap every time. He said they should give Sanchez the opportunity to read the defense and throw to the open receiver. Now clearly a lot has changed in the NFL since the days of Namath, but his sentiment rings true even today: at some point we need to have someone under center who can rely on their QB instincts and make these decisions. Maybe I’m premature here, maybe bc it’s his second year its too much to ask, but then why have we assembled this win now team if we’re going to have to hold the kid’s hand the whole season? How can we be expected to play for a Super Bowl if Sanchez is always throwing to the pre-determined receiver, even when coverage breaks down and another guy is wide open down field? I know I’m not the only one who sees this.
Namath also said that he’s sick and tired of seeing us throw to the check down receiver for a five yard gain on 3rd and 8… from his lips to God’s ears.
-
Namath had 173 TDs and 220 INTs (comparisons: Bradshaw 212 / 210, Staubach 153 / 109), so I wouldn’t put undue weight on his opinion.
-
INTS can cost you games but they dont realy lose them. You have to have balls to throw the ball(Farve, though i love/hate him for it)
I never new Sanchez was not allowed to throw to the receiver of his choice, this is more blame on Schooty.
-
The fact that he played enough to get to 220 INTs proves he was a talented QB. He also won a superbowl.

what string defense is rick foley going to play with Bass??
-
I think he plays 5 string bass and does some backing vocals
-
Definitely not talented enough to play the double neck.

finally some good news- pace could be back by week 2
-
Sanchez is complicated. I don’t trust him to read a defense, but I don’t think the Jets can win a title with a dominant run game & weak pass game. I understand Namath’s comments–If Sanchez is ever to become anything more than a game manager, he needs to have some rope. But that will surely give up some INTs.
My solution is to push Sanchez very hard in practice but hold him back in games until he can beat our own D consistently.
I am not a big fan of Sanchez. I don’t think there is another QB that stares down recevers the way he does. I just hope he can get much better.

Shotty Junior has developed Brees and Rivers (I almost forgot). Or was that the work of Shotty Senior?
I was not overall impressed with Shotty Junior after Rex had to intervene in offensive dial down and watching HK (I know HK is only a show…).
Bringing in Brunnell also had me scratching my head trying to figure that move out (waste of internal cap space and roster spot) even though Brunell did perform well in last preseason game.
Maybe a HC opportunity opens up for Shotty Junior. I wouldn’t object to seeing him go.

can we start the season,my god !all this advice .the guy played good in the playoffs and could of beaten the colts if greene/scoot/harris/elis/di”nt get hurt and tj lost his legs .and the more I see that catch before the end of the half. that led to a colts TD makes me glad that rhodes is gone, he could of knock the s out of the guy and maybe he drops the ball.what till the first 4 games to judge better yet the end of the season.
