As we head into roster cutdowns through the next few days, we’ll take a closer look at what — we imagine — the final roster could look like. Here’s a swing at the direction I expect the roster to be come final cut downs. I’ve left one roster spot available for a waiver wire pickup from another team (likely a DL, LB or CB), and I’ve not counted Santonio Holmes toward the total count since that won’t happen until Week Five. On another note, I have optimistically counted Darrelle Revis as a member of the team.
Hope this helps, let us know what you think in the comments.
SECONDARY
| Pos | # | Name | Height | Weight | Age | Years | |
| CB | 1 | 24 | Revis, D (inactive?) | 5-11 | 200 | 25 | 4 |
| CB | 2 | 31 | Cromartie, A | 6-2 | 210 | 26 | 5 |
| CB | 3 | 20 | Wilson, K | 5-10 | 190 | 23 | R |
| CB | 4 | 26 | Lowery, D | 5-11 | 198 | 24 | 3 |
| CB | 5 | 30 | Coleman, D | 5-9 | 180 | 27 | 5 |
| CB | 6 | 34 | Cole, M | 5-10 | 192 | 26 | 2 |
| S | 1 | 36 | Leonhard, J | 5-8 | 188 | 27 | 6 |
| S | 2 | 22 | Pool, B | 6-2 | 214 | 26 | 6 |
| S | 3 | 33 | Smith, E | 6-1 | 207 | 27 | 5 |
| S | 4 | 44 | Ihedigbo, J | 6-1 | 214 | 26 | 4 |
Notes: No Revis, no changes as far as I can see. With Revis still in cryogenic freeze, Coleman makes the team. If Revis was to come back into the fold before the season starts, I’d imagine Coleman (though he’s a teacher’s pet since Jeff Weeks coached him at some point as an amateur) might be the one on thin ice … if there’s any monetary benefit to cutting him (5 years) versus Cole (2 years) and and then bringing him back once the season starts – I could see the Jets doing that.
While some are really cheering for Donavan Warren to make this team, he’s not shown enough and been injured, so there’s really no shot of him making the active roster, more than likely, he’ll be a squadder unless someone else picks him up first.

| OLB | 4 | 55 | Westerman, J | 6-3 | 255 | 25 | 2 |
Notes: No changes here. Rickey Foley is a nice idea, but I think it’s too little too late, and when you count the news that Calvin Pace might be back sooner as opposed to later, then there’s no need to have a roster spot for Foley … the Jets just need to hold the fort until the help arrives. Cory Reamer is a player the team seems to like, but who can’t be afforded a full roster spot at this time. Lance Laury might be on the bubble, but I think his special teams abilities could well keep him on the roster for the Jets. With all that said, I get the sense that the Jets wish they had one more legit fill in options depth-wise at linebacker .. so should anyone float to the waiver wire that they’ve had their eye on in the next few days, that might change quickly.
DEFENSIVE LINE

| DL | 5 | 61 | Steinkuhler | 6-3 | 290 | 24 | 1 |
Notes: The removal of Rodrique Wright only showed that the team has more faith in their project linemen from last year, Matt Kroul and Ty Steinkuhler, than the former highly touted NFL prospect. I still think that if the Jets find a more satisfactory hybrid 4-3 tackle or 3-4 end on the waiver wire, they’ll release one of these guys (likely Stein) to make room.
OFFENSIVE LINE
| Pos | # | Name | Height | Weight | Age | Years | |
| LT | 1 | 60 | Ferguson, D | 6-6 | 310 | 26 | 5 |
| LG | 1 | 68 | Slauson, M | 6-5 | 315 | 24 | 2 |
| C | 1 | 74 | Mangold, N | 6-4 | 307 | 26 | 5 |

| OL | 2 | 78 | Hunter, W | 6-5 | 318 | 29 | 7 |
| OL | 3 | 62 | Ducasse, V | 6-5 | 325 | 22 | R |
Notes: Ducasse is going to be buried on the depth chart for the foreseeable future, or at least until Slauson almost gets Mark Sanchez killed, based on Tannenbaum’s assesment of the near-miss on Sanchez’s knee during one of the first unit’s work against the Panthers. Matt Slauson has all but won the starting job by virtue of turnstyling a lower number of defensive linemen into his QB. Not exactly what you are looking for from the position. Personally, I think the Jets would be better playing Turner at LG at this point, but then it would cause real havoc if the team’s backup Center needed to replace Mangold for more than the odd snap at any point during the season.
TIGHT ENDS
| Pos | # | Name | Height | Weight | Age | Years | |
| TE | 1 | 81 | Keller, D | 6-2 | 250 | 25 | 3 |
| TE | 2 | 84 | Hartsock, B | 6-4 | 268 | 30 | 7 |
| TE | 3 | 82 | Mulligan, M | 6-4 | 268 | 25 | 2 |
| TE | 4 | 86 | Cumberland, J | 6-5 | 260 | 23 | R |
Notes: Matthew Mulligan has played his way onto this team by virtue of his special teams play and lack of compelling backup linebackers who can double on special teams. Everyone likes Jeff Cumberland based on his potential, and while I thought he would not make the squad last week, it’s clear that Rex wants him here, and barring any shenanigans or Woodhead-esque Game Four preseason performances, he’ll make the final roster for the Jets.
WIDE RECEIVERS
| Pos | # | Name | Height | Weight | Age | Years | |
| WR | 1 | 89 | Cotchery, J | 6-0 | 203 | 28 | 7 |
| WR | 2 | 17 | Edwards, B | 6-3 | 214 | 27 | 6 |
| WR | 3 | 10 | Holmes, S (susp.) | 5-11 | 192 | 26 | 5 |
| WR | 4 | 16 | Smith, B | 6-2 | 212 | 26 | 5 |
| WR | 5 | 87 | Clowney, D | 6-0 | 187 | 25 | 3 |
Notes: This looks ridiculous … four receivers on the opening roster? It just doesn’t look right. Most teams carry five or six into a season, but I think with keeping Cumberland and Richardson on the team, they have to sacrifice somewhere, and with Holmes coming back Week Five, there’s no reason to have fluff when the team’s top TE is a beefcake’d receiver. Clowney has beaten out Larry Taylor, a kid who’s a nice story, but nice stories alone don’t make NFL rosters when they return one kickoff and one punt in the third preseason game. The Jets will get by until help arrives, then find a way to shelve TE Cumberland once it does.
RUNNING BACKS
| Pos | # | Name | Height | Weight | Age | Years | |
| RB | 1 | 23 | Greene, S | 5-11 | 226 | 24 | 2 |
| RB | 2 | 21 | Tomlinson, L | 5-10 | 215 | 31 | 10 |
| RB | 3 | 25 | McKnight, J | 5-11 | 205 | 22 | R |
| FB | 1 | 49 | Richardson, T | 6-1 | 240 | 38 | 16 |
| FB | 2 | 38 | Conner, J | 5-11 | 245 | 23 | R |
Notes: More than anything, Tomlinson has shown a renewed energy this summer and I think that limiting his carries could prove a nice complement to Greene’s battering ways. I still have doubts about Joe McKnight making the roster … I’d like him to make it, but I think that the team isn’t giving up on their draft pick just yet.
So, the above looks like the most realistic scenario to me, based on how much Rex wants Richardson on this team. Still, I don’t know how this is going to play out based on Tannenbaum’s reluctance to do what it would take to find a roster spot for the veteran FB. I could see a scenario where the team takes Danny Woodhead instead and leaves T-Rich off the opening day roster.
QUARTERBACKS
| Pos | # | Name | Height | Weight | Age | Years | |
| QB | 1 | 6 | Sanchez, M | 6-2 | 225 | 23 | 2 |
| QB | 2 | 8 | Brunell, M | 6-1 | 215 | 39 | 18 |
| QB | 3 | 11 | Clemens, K | 6-2 | 220 | 27 | 5 |
Notes: The Clemens storyline on HK was one of the most compelling. It’s proof to me that contractually, the NFL business model is a one-way street from owners to players … Clemens was forced to take a paycut, or take his chances on the open market – which would have been a death sentence, this close to the season for a guy like him. There were no RFA overtures for Clemens last offseason, the team had been actively shopping him up until very recently, and I think he saw the reality of the situation: make minimum level money as the #3, or get cut and take your chances. Tannenbaum encouraged Clemens to work to make himself the long-term #2 and challenge Rex to see him as such, a conversation which couldn’t have made him feel good, and which pained me to watch. In the offseason, Clemens will be an unrestricted free agent, and he’ll get the chance to see if there are teams who will take a risk on him, or he could come back to the Jets should nothing avail itself to him. In some ways, I worry he’s become “Jetstitutionalized” much like Brooks in Shawshank Redemption. We’ll see this offseason.
I get that Tannenbaum is trying to shave it to the bone as much as he can (maybe as a way to justify some insane money for Revis?) but I didn’t like how that played out at all for Clemens. It was a win for the Jets, while Clemens – a guy who just three years ago was The Great Oregonian Hope – is now barely hanging onto the Jets roster.
SPECIALISTS
| Pos | # | Name | Height | Weight | Age | Years | |
| K | 2 | Folk, N | 6-1 | 222 | 25 | 4 | |
| LS | 46 | Purdum, T | 6-3 | 270 | 26 | 1 | |
| P | 9 | Weatherford, S | 6-3 | 215 | 27 | 5 |
Notes: Folk missed an XP last week … that’s not good for anyone most specifically himself, but hey, he’s cheap. I still contend if there is someone they like better, they’ll pick that kicker up, specifically whoever falls off the Texans roster.
Every few days, I get emails about James Dearth. The team is moving on, and from what I saw on HK last night, they are looking to slim the cost of the roster for this season as much as possible by necessity from giving guys like Brick and Nick new deals. Having a long-standing vet like Dearth on this team is costly, it’s something the Jets aren’t willing to really look at just yet.

can we all start a collection to take out a full page ad in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette imploring Revis to sign? I will gladly lead the efforts and set up a Pay Pal account to pay for this. I just cant afford it on my own. Anybody in?
-
Does anyone see this:
DL 3 50 Gholston, V 6-3 260 24 3
He is the lightest DL on the roster by 30 lb. And we are considered 3-4 defense. I guess call him all you want, as long as it helps him play well.
-
everyone new he was small for the DL position since day 1!!
-
-
What about E. Cook??
-
“A kid who’s a nice story, but nice stories alone don’t make NFL rosters”
Kinda funny that that’s the logic for Clowney making the team over Taylor who pretty much embodies the “nice story” player himself.
-
aren’t Mulligan and Hartsock kind of redundant? Why carry both?
-
Doubts about McKnight making the roster? He’s looked pretty darned good on punt returns.
-
Matt322,
No one reads the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, not even Revis!
-
haha, touche – unfortunately i was working under teh assumption it’d be much cheaper than a NY paper!

“Money” McKnight Is Making This Team No Doubt. End Debate.
-
In philly
Tailgating.
Philly has no love for anyone
Let’s go jets -
I see Woodhead making the roster at the expense of Clowney. Woodhead can catch as many or more balls than the Clown and he can play specials including returning the ball. The Clown probably makes the roster and is cut after week 4.
The Jets will pick up one or two D lineman when the free agent feeding frenzy starts with roster cuts to 53 players.
HOT NUGGET – Clemens is the #3 QB but will be the starter if Sanchez goes down for any length of time.
-
I’m not anti-Clowney per se, but I’d rather keep Danny Woodhead, who’s way more versatile and does nothing but produce when he’s on the field. Thoughts?
Honestly, Woodhead is more NFL ready as a RB than even McKnight at this point…
-
I also see Chauncey Washington in the hunt for a final roster spot. Probably a long shot but he did get a game ball after the Carolina game for that crunching ST hit and some hard running between the tackles.
-
Jets pick up an O lineman before gameday.
-
After the first half of the Philly game, with another McKnight fumble, I think it breaks down like this:
1-3. QB’s
4-8. Obvious RB’s/FB’s
9-11. Cotch, Edwards, Smith
12-15. 4 TE’s
16-23. 8 OL
24. Ellis
25. Jenkins
26. DeVito
27. Pouha
28. Kroul
29. Steinkuhler
30. Gholston
31. Pace
32. Taylor
33. Thomas
34. Westerman
35. Laury
36. Scott
37. Harris
38. Cummings
39. Revis/Coleman
40. Cro
41. Lowery
42. Wilson
43. Cole
44. Leonhard
45. Smith
46. Diggs
47. Pool
48-50. K/P/LS
51. Woodhead
52. Washington
53. Clowney/Holmes -
Anybody who has watched this perseason can not be excited. This team walks around like they accomplished something.Wow what a fun training camp that must have been. The backups stink and vlad and mcknight stink.Rex looks miserable deakling with these players.
-
McKnight has no business making this team. Taylor, Washington, and woodhead all have a place here over McKnight. The guy is way too immature at this stage in his life to be an nil player. Drop a tight end and give the three headed monster of midgets ( woodhead washington Taylor) a chance
-
Greg “the shill” buttle just said that revis couldnt cover holmes. Are you kidding me who does this guy know that he has a job.
-
a team that fumbles is an undisciplined team
-
We get it. You don’t like Rex Ryan.
-
-
Woodhead and Chauncey both deserve spots on the team..McKnight does not
-
Buttle is just awful…ridiculous comments all night long. “Jim Leonhard would have trouble making the 49ers” “Revis cant cover Holmes”
-
I only count 51 names above, so there is a couple spots available for the woodheads, cooks, and warrens I guess.

I think your assessment of Slauson is pretty unfair. He’s been better than you give him credit for. I like Rob Turner, but Slauson deserves the job on merit and hasn’t won it by default.
