Jets Win 2010 Bollinger Bowl 21-17

by Bent on September 2nd, 2010 at 10:47 pm

The Jets hung on for a 21-17 win over the Eagles in the 2010 Bollinger Bowl, after yet another sloppy performance where the Jets completely dominated their opponent (347-186 total yards, 37:24 time of possession), but hurt themselves with bad errors, notably fumbles.

Here are the main talking points:

- Hugh Douglas, working for the local Philadelphia network, was wearing a suit with a pair of Chuck Taylors.
- As expected, hardly any starters dressed for the Jets.
- Danny Woodhead broke a tackle!
- A long return on the opening kickoff and then a big catch against Drew Coleman set up a field goal for the Eagles on their first drive.
- Joe McKnight fumbled yet again on the last play of the first quarter and it was returned for a long TD to give the Eagles a 10-0 lead.
- Emmanuel Cook intercepted a pass early in the second quarter to set up the Jets at the Eagles 15 yard line. Mark Brunell rolled out and hit Jeff Cumberland for a 2 yard TD to cut the deficit to 10-7.
- The Jets outgained the Eagles 153-100 in the first half and the Eagles failed to convert a third down. The offensive line was not great, but the running game averaged five yards per carry and they only gave up one sack.
- Mark Brunell may not be athletic enough to break down first string defenses any more, but tonight gave an insight into how Mark Sanchez can learn from his decision making and patience. He went 9-15-63-TD in the first half, but underthrew a wide open Santonio Holmes on a deep throw late in the second quarter.
- In the final minute of the first half, John Conner fumbled on a freak play after tripping over his own man and had it returned for another TD by Kurt Coleman, his second TD of the day, so the Eagles led 17-7 at the half.
- Kellen Clemens played QB in the second half and opened up the half by going 5-for-6 on a long drive that ended with a 14 yard TD run by Danny Woodhead to cut it to 17-14.
- Santonio Holmes fumbled for the second game in a row, but Chauncey Washington bailed him out with the recovery. Clemens then got sacked and lost a fumble on the next drive. He injured his elbow on the play, but did return later.
- Brunell re-entered the game and threw a 51 yard TD on a long bomb to Holmes to give the Jets a 21-17 lead early in the fourth. Holmes led the Jets with 97 yards on four catches.
- Eagles backup QB Mike Kafka’s stats through three quarters: 1-14-3yds-int.
- Brian Jackson stripped the ball loose and recovered a fumble with 12:39 to go and the Jets still up 21-17.
- Matt Kroul led the Jets in tackles and was credited with two sacks.
- The Jets ran for 175 yards, led by Chauncey Washington’s 56 yards on 12 carries.
- The Eagles drove down to the Jets 48 on their last possession, but Vernon Gholston beat the right tackle with a speed rush and sacked Kafka on the final play of the game to clinch the win.

Stay tuned for our official guess the roster contest later tonight and we’ll do BGA after the final cuts and practice squad have been announced.

    Vernon effing Gholston!

  2. avatar JDB says:

rooting for McKnight, but Washington has consistently outperformed him.

Granted their styles are different, Joe is better in space, but really he just makes too many mistakes right now

    • Us Money Supporters have lost Ryan said he isn’t playing Mcknight until he proves he deserves it. I don’t understand it he lost two fumbles all Pre Season and he doesn’t deserve it?

      • avatar Bent says:

Funnily enough, that’s what I predicted before camp got underway and I was told to shut up before I embarrassed myself.

*cups hand to ear, Hulk Hogan style*

      • avatar juunit says:

He also threw up in his first practice, failed the conditioning tests, and averaged around 3 yards a carry during the preseason. So uh… no, he does not deserve anything.

        • Yeah but bent broke it down so did Washington and besides woodhead’s run HE was averaging 3 per carry as well.
He failed a conditioning test and come on if you think him throwing up in a practice means rex has no confidence in him then you really are clueless.
How is Mcknight supposed to get Ryan’s confidence sitting on the Bench deactivated. Its not fair I bet my bottom dollar Money Mcknight will have a beter career than Woodhead or Washington.

          • avatar juunit says:

The difference is Washington and Woodhead averaged that in this game, McDonald$ averaged 3 yards all preseason long. Washington had better games where he averaged more than that. McDonald$ has done absolutely nothing to prove his value to this team, the throwing up and failing the tests only compound the issue.

    • IMHO, Joe G’Night has simply played himself off this team. Forget styles, he’s been thoroughly outplayed by C. Washington the last two games.

Even beyond the fumbles… I was watching Joe tonight and over and over he refused to hit a hole. Which, of course, would immediately close up on him. He’s running “cute.” He gets the ball and attempts to figure out which would the best way to go — and he cuts, and he cuts and he cuts, until the hole closes, he gets hit and he goes down.

He’s proving that he’s still the greatest High School runner in the country.

      • avatar PSuLking says:

Amen to THAT. He hits the hole like an 88 year-old grandmother, fumbles a ton (even after that long punt return against Washington, he fumbled and was GASSED afterwards), and refuses to block (look at the punts last night). Woodhead and Washington are both Rudyesque, but inspire those around them to play better football.

        To rework Ara’s quote:

I wish god would put Woodhead’s heart in Joe Mcnight’s body!

  3. avatar Paul says:

I was so happy for Gholston on that last play.. he breaks through the line a lot but then slows down when he forces the QB out of the pocket. I’m hoping he can show up this year.. he’s had hands down his best training camp.. which isn’t saying much haha.

    • avatar Bent says:

That was a nice reward for him, albeit against a guy who likely won’t play in the NFL this year, if ever. He was on the blindside most of the time, but they often doubled up on him, so he didn’t get much pressure. In fact, they dropped him into coverage quite a lot, which suggests they do intend to use him at OLB in week one.

I think Ducasse was much better today, too, but I’ll have to look at the film.

    • I was trying to keep an eye on VG tonight, and I thought he had a pretty good game. There were a number of pressures, and they did have him in coverage a lot.

What I saw was a ton of hustle and a pretty high motor for VG. I think we’re getting somewhere…

    • avatar iJets says:

Reminded my of the last play in the movie Rudy.

I hope VG has a break out year.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Ghost Man looks ready to silence his critics. He’s a football player now, an NFL player at that. He’s not taking crap from other players (I’ve seen him in 2-3 legit post-play scuffles this preseason), he’s letting his natural abilities take over, he’s showing actual instinct (probably the most shocking to fans), and (get ready Sackdance…) he’s showing pass rushing moves. I mean, he’s not just running in a straight line at the QB with a lineman in his way.

Very happy that Ghost Man’s hard work is paying off and he’s getting the fans behind him finally.

      • avatar R in CT says:

Actually did a little fist pump when VG nailed that last sack — good for him! I focused on him a lot during the game, and he was heavily involved and was constantly involved with tackles, rather than just standing around at the end of plays. Certainly has gotten better.

In fairness to VG, although he’s gotten a lot of criticism for his productivity (or lack thereof), you can’t ever question the kid’s work habits. Having seen him at camp a few times, he’s always one of those guys hanging around doing extra, listening to coaches and the older vets, and genuinely trying to become a better football player.

He’s also never complained about anything as far as I can tell, despite being moved around and all the criticism. Seems like a decent kid, so I’m glad that he is finally putting it all together.

  4. avatar JETS#1 says:

    Brunell looked good

  5. avatar Dmazz says:

Chauncey deserves the 3rd RB spot hands down woodhead should stick around until holmes comes back. McKnight should sit on the practice squad along with Larry Taylor

  6. avatar JayM says:

TheJetsStream Rex says mcknight “is going to make this team. I’m just not going to play him.”

TheJetsStream Rex esentially saying mcknight will be deactivated every week until he proves he derserves to play.

JennyVrentas Players Ryan said stood out: Brian Jackson, Martin Tevaseu, Chauncey Washington. Also said Woodhead earned his roster spot

  7. avatar DR24 says:

    VERNON GHOLSTON!
The roster cut downs are going to be tough.

  8. avatar bk says:

    i like holmes’ td celebration

  9. avatar Dylan says:

I don’t see how the Jets could cut Washington after that game. I also don’t see how they could keep 5 RBs, 2 FBs, and 4 TEs. Some tough decisions are going to need to be made. I also think Brian Jackson will get a roster spot. He did a good job.

  10. avatar AKA Jack says:

Washington has earned a spot on this team.

    • avatar Bent says:

I’m not so sure. He broke a big 22 yard run, but other than that averaged just 3 yards per carry. Against backups, that’s not really good enough. He did have a nice catch too though (and Woodhead also only averaged 3 yards a carry if you take away his TD).

      I just don’t see how there’s room for 3 QBs, 2 FBs, 5 RBs and 4 TEs.

  11. avatar swizzle81 says:

They have to keep Washington over Woodhead if it comes down to that, unless they cut Clowney and give Woodhead the 5th WR spot. What are the chances the Jets cutting Hartsock, if Mulligan is basically the same type of player costing a lot less?

    • avatar Dylan says:

Rex already said Woodhead “earned his roster spot,” so he isn’t going anywhere.

    • avatar Bent says:

No chance, Swizz, Hartsock was guaranteed 800K in the deal he signed.

People underestimate what an integral part of the running game he is. No way they’d get close to the same production from Mulli, who is on the team for his special teams play.

Rex does seem to have “promised” a lot of roster spots to skill position players. I wonder if he’s regretably going to end up having to break that promise.

  12. Rex said that McKnight WILL make the team just won’t get any playing time. All I’m saying is that this better not mean that Chauncey Washington and Woodhead won’t make the 53 man roster because that just would not be fair. Woodhead had a very nice game and Chauncey has been superb all pre-season. Jeff Cumberland did well for himself today, I really like what I saw from him. He looks like a poor man’s Jermichael Finley, let’s see if he pans out. I think Clowney will make the team, not that he’s gonna contribute much once the season starts. MY MAN VERNON GHOLSTON! I tell ya, I’m expecting a productive season out of Vernon, I really think moving him to DE was one of the smartest things Rex has done. Vernon Gholston will take away that “bust” label after this season, mark my words. Not saying he’s going to be a star, but he will contribute. As for the backup QB situation, I guess Brunell wasn’t too bad tonight, had that nice TD pass to Holmes and the TD to Cumberland, but I still think Kellen Clemens deserves to be the #2. I just don’t think it’s fair that a 38 year old Mark Brunell can just walk in and be guaranteed the job while Clemens outperformed him in the pre-season. I have the ut=most respect for Kellen Clemens and even more so after watching Hard Knocks yesterday. I don’t think Kellen will ever be a starter in the NFL, but the guy is a SOLID backup QB and there is no doubt in my mind that if God forbid Sanchez were to go down, Clemens puts us in a MUCH better position to win than Brunell. Brunell should sit back and mentor Sanchez but Kellen deserves to be the backup. NOW BRING ON THE RAVENS!

  13. avatar Led says:

I’m a big Chauncey fan after this preseason. Plus, it’s Jets tradition to have somebody named Washington. Marvin, Brian, Leon, Chauncey…. McKnight has to make the team becuase he’s a 4th round pick, but he hasn’t come close to earning it.

  14. avatar Ed L says:

i like chauncy over mcknight and woodhead…however mcknight has a lot of potential he just needs to get his head on straight…to the practice squad he should go

  15. with the emergence of skilled players in this game like Chauncy, Woodhead, Emmanuel Cook, Brian Jackson, and Cumberland, my strong suspicion is that somebody like Ty Steinkuhler who was a strong bet to make the team will now lose his anticipated spot

  16. Washington’s so much better than McKnight it’s unreal. McKnight lacks the grit to be a solid player and better develop it quick or he may a perennial PS-type player. Gifted athlete with no desire.

VG looked a lot better in spots. Still gets hung up at times on his blocks and needs to develop some type of spin move or get really pissed to bust through and dominate. Remember this was the Eagles second team “O.”

The remaining days before the season better be spent on securing the ball or buying all the Stick-um available on the East Coast. I’d have all the receivers, RB’s, TEs, kickoff and punt returners line up opposite the D-men and have the “D’s” try to strip away the ball for 10 minutes every day. This would help both sides although the “D” is fine at this point.

    • avatar NamVetJet says:

I don’t know if it is a lack of desire—-seemed to me to be more insecurity then anything else. Sometimes we forget that these are very young men who are being thrown on a very big stage, very quickly. That is why you might want to wait a bit before throwing in the towel with a guy. Not saying he is going to be a star in the NFL, but he obviously had some talent that showed in college.

  17. avatar Brad says:

Cant put McKnight on the Practice Squad cause someone else would probably pick him up- and then they just wasted a 4th rd pick and traded Leon for nothing- it would show they made a huge mistake- and they wouldnt do that. Best bet, maybe PUP list- come up with some BS reason, dont know the rules on this, if there is a consequence for a team putting someone on their for an BS injury.

    • avatar Bent says:

Yes, but football players get so banged up you can usually give them some kind of season ending surgery or something. If he’s going to be on the roster but not play (as Rex said) maybe a “phantom” injury around say week four might be convenient.

PUP isn’t an option unless you’ve not played at all during camp.

    • I believe G’Night might be suffering from the same malady bedeviling Ollie Perez of the Mets — a brain sprain.

That should definitely qualify for IR — with the only known cure, ‘growing the F#@K Up.’ And that should take a while…

  18. avatar jets69 says:

    Gholston had a sack!
    Damn

  19. avatar jvsvn says:

In his in-game interview Tanny said he expected that the jets might bring in a guy or two off the waiver wire “as they have done in the past.” I’m not so sure that guys “who earned a roster spot” tonight should feel too comfortable. Also, Ryan seems to like this guy Martin Tevaseu. Sounds like he’s a good candidate for the PS.

  20. what happen to cory reamer

  21. when revis signs coleman is done jackson has more talent

    • avatar Brendan says:

      +1

First play of the game what do I see? Coleman getting burnt for almost 30 yards by a rookie. Yeah, get him the hell outta here and keep Jackson. He’s athletic and strong and I like what he’s shown thus far.

  22. avatar juunit says:

I know they won’t, but what’s the real argument against just trading McDonald$? If he’s going to clog up the roster, it seems dumb to keep him. It’s like Oliver Perez on the Mets. Constantly playing one man short.

    • Baseball has minor league where you keep players till they are ready. Remember dude is just a rookie and was drafted.

      • avatar juunit says:

So what? He’s still clogging up a roster spot that could be used by a player that would actually be useful to the team. And Oliver Perez refused to go to the minors, so in that situation the minor leagues might as well not exist. With that situation it’s either trade him, cut him or be stuck with him… the same as it is with McDonald$.

  23. avatar Dylan says:

I thought Kroul earned a roster spot. He was really good. I really like what I saw from Larry Taylor. I didn’t think he was anything more than a KR/PR, but I thought he showed some potential as a WR. I could see him contributing out of the slot in a year or two. Not sure if he makes the roster, but if he doesn’t he is a perfect PS candidate.

  24. avatar DR24 says:

Is there any place to get highlights for this game? I can’t find any clips on ESPN that aren’t exclusively of Coleman’s returns, which I do not want to see anymore.

  25. avatar da hood says:

Let me tell you If you dont allready know i love KC class act , he doesnt fumble or get hurt if the right gaurd doesnt get beat.

With that said sanchez better get some all time blocking cause he is gonna take a beating, he better be on his skates , and brunnel being #2 against starters he will get seriously hurt I am sorry to say.

Yeah we need gholsten, and the way vick just toyed with the 1st team dfense was retarded i know those werent starters but still i think if vick played a whole half he might have 200 yards. he threw 5 passes for 60 yrds, damn.,

WOODHEAD is a must he is a wayne chrebet in disguised. I am going in the past sorry but does anyone realize if wayne chrebet were on a different team like the patriots or the colts he just might b a future hall of famer

and i say that to say this the jets will never understand the QB position testaverde and pennington got this hard working guy into early retirement.

Hope woodhead doesnt experience the same also worried about s holmes way too careless with the ball and he wasnt even hit hard i could understand if he was hit hard.

I am almost startg to wonder if tannumbuam is isiah thomas in disguise , t.jones for a old lt, if any body has followed lt he never plays a whole season every play off for the last 4 years for the chargers he gets hurt I understand there is a limit to how far a team will go to pay a player but $50 mill for sanchez noway!!!!,

i totally understand why revis is doin what he is doin the jets are known for not paying major $$ for the right guys. revis has proven himself .sanchez threw 22 interceptions last year GO FIGURE???

    • avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

I cannot believe you are saying that LDT is not an upgrade from Jones. All offseason I have seen those tÝpe of comments in the comments an it still stuns me.
Jones had a few redeeming qualities. He din’t get hurt an he didn’t fumble an he was a vocal leader.

He couldn’t catch, he couldn’t make people miss, an generally fell forward for 3 yd gains most of the time.

LDT is definately an upgrade. The big question is if he can stay healthy.

    • avatar Brendan says:

      Ok.

Thomas Jones has 25 carries for 87 yards (3.5 ypc) and 1 TD 5 receptions for 18 yards.

LT has 22 carries for 129 yards (5.9 average) and 4 receptions for 43 yards.

Now, please don’t come at me with the offensive line argument. Both KC and SD have bad run-blocking lines. TJ goes to KC and is not doing well, LT leaves SD for a great run-blocking line and all of a sudden looks pretty damn good. He’s more explosive since he dropped weight this offseason and I see no way in which TJ is better, behind this offensive line, than LT.

    • How is Woodhead Wayne in disguise and Woodhead’s a RB? Are you saying that cause he’s white ? Because thats about the only thing they have in common.

  26. avatar da hood says:

    • avatar Bent says:

“HOW IN THE WORLD DOES A ROOKIE IN HIS 2ND GAME THROW 260 YDS AGAINST THE #1 DEFENSE IN THE NFL”

      1. He wasn’t a rookie
      2. The Ravens weren’t the number one defense that year
      3. The Ravens lost to the 1-15 Dolphins that year
      4. Clemens had 84 yards entering the 4th and was just 9-18
      5. The Jets trailed 20-3 after three quarters
      6. The Ravens went into a prevent in the 4th
      7. Over half his 4th quarter yds = YAC by Cotchery
      8. Even if McCareins catches that ball, they don’t win, they just go to overtime.
      9. Brooks Bollinger’s best game (v Miami) was better (327 yards, 2 TDs)
      10. They still only scored 13 points.
      11. His QB rating that day was 60.6.
      12. 260 yards on 37 passes is not that good.

      Facts, every one of them.

I’m not anti-Clemens, but continuing to reference that game does him no favors, because he had one good quarter against a lousy team playing a prevent defense. He actually had better games than that later on that season.

  27. avatar TJBfan says:

You are also just twisting facts to try and seem in your favor. Here are the Clemens facts:
He was losing the training camp battle to Pennington before they brought in Brett.
He was set to challenge Brett Ratliff in training camp before Sanchez was drafted and clearly lost out to his new contender Mark who looked better in practice and preseason games.
He filled in for Mark for 1 game vs Tampa and looked pretty bad.

I can see why it may seem the “odds” are stacked against him but I watched those battles in preseason and he didn’t really come close in any battle, why has he gotten so little regular season snaps? You put the best man on the field.

As far as McKnight, watching him in person made me sick. No heart and doesn’t deserve to be in the NFL as of now. His only redeeming talent is he seems good for punt returns so as a 4th round pick I’d keep him to try and develop the rest.

Washington would make the team in a regular year but do I keep him over Conner + Richardson? Nope. Good player but nothing that would distinguish him from a good rb cut from other rosters.

I’d like to root for Clowney yet another offseason but I’m in rooting for Woodhead. When a player has that much work ethic and drive it’s a matter of finding the right game situations to have him make an impact.

  28. avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

Kellen can make a servicable backup. If he was able, the team would have never brought in Favre. If you remember, he couldn’t even beat out Pennington. I am happy he will make the team, if only so he is not spilling the beans to a competitor.

Preseason=Don’t get too high, don’t get too low…it’s practice.

In a week, any gripes we all may have will be completely valid. We can then jump all over the offense if they continue to struggle.

  29. avatar Brandon says:

What do you think of having Connor carry the ball every so often, to spell Green? Of cours ethat fumble didn’t help :-(

  30. avatar da hood says:

WOODHEAD IS SHORT NOT ONLY WHITE, BUT HE PLAYS HARD AND LIKE CHREBET HE ALWAYS WANTED TO PROVE THE DOUBTERS WRONG ABOUT HIS SIZE HE IS A RB BUT HE WILL BE CATCHING THE BALL AS WELL,

LETS B NICE AND NOT MAKE IT ABOUT RACE IF HER WERE BLACK I WOULD SAY THE SAME THING, AND JUST BECAUSE LT HAS A COUPLE MORE YARDS IN THE PRESEASON HE HAS TO PROVE HE ISNT OLD AND AGAIN WHO DO YOU REALLY WANT ON THE FIELD TO MOVE THE BALL WHEN YOU ARE ON 3RD AND 3 OR 3RD AND 2 T JONES, GETS THAT 1ST DWN EVERY TIME

AND AGAIN IF YOU LIKE LT IM TELLING YOU NOW HE WILL NOT PLAY A ENTIRE SEASON HASNT IN 5 YEARS!!

    !
AND BENT YEAH HE (KC) DID HAVE BETTER GAMES HE BITT PITT IN OVERTIME WITH HIS ARM AND SCRABLING FOR 1ST DOWNS AND YOU KEEP SAYING YARDS AFTER THE CATCH SO WHAT SHOULD THE REC DO STOP AFTA THE CATCH? TELL ME HE HAD GREAT RECIEVERS IN 2007

AND THE MCAERINS DROP ANY WIDE RECIEVER MAKES THAT CATCH HE COUDNT THROW ANY MORE BEAUTIFUL AND IF THEY GO INTO (OT) THEY WOULDA WON CAUSE HE WAS ON A ROLL IN ONLY HIS TRULY 2ND GAME OF HIS NFL CAREER.

BENT DO YOU WORK FOR REX???

JETS FANS WERE JUST HAPPY TO HAVE A YOUNG QB AND DIDNT CARE WHO HE WAS HE SAID ALL THE RIGHT THINGS BUT DID ALL THE WRONG THINGS

AS I SAID HIS POORLY THROWN BALLS MADE CHREBET HAVE TO RETIRE EARLY PENNINGTON COULD NOT MOVE OUT OF THE POCKET,

AND EVERY PASS WAS A 2 YARDER TO THE RECEIVER TO SEE IF HE CAN BREAK DOWN FIELD WHICH WAS THE JETS #1 PASSING PLAY CAUSE CP COULD NOT THROW DOWNFIELD SO IF YOU WANNA SAY HE LOST TO HIM GO HEAD BUT YOUR NOT BEING REAL BRO.

ESPN USED TO INTERVIEW CORNERBACKS WHO WOULD SAY WHEN WE PLAY THE JETS UNDER PENNINGTON ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS PLAY THE 1ST TEN YARDS CAUSE HE ISNT THROWING DOWNFIELD
