Link: Contenders of the Next Decade?

Pat Kirwan looks at the Jets as one of his teams that could very well be a contender over the next ten years.

1. New York Jets

Looking into a crystal ball is not advised given all the volatility and worst-to-first scenarios that seem to pop up every year in the NFL. Still, it’s interesting to take a calculated look at the 32 teams and try to unveil those that could become the Patriots, Steelers, Colts and Eagles in this new decade.

The ingredients for long-term success start with a franchise quarterback and a solid young defense. It is also necessary to have young playmakers on offense, a strong front office and stability in the coaching staff.

The Jets already possess a young quarterback who has two road playoff victories under his belt in Mark Sanchez. Their defense will always be aggressive under the direction of Rex Ryan. The young offensive line will have a top center and left tackle for the next eight to 10 years, and Darrelle Revis will be an elite corner for years to come, once he and the team can get over their differences.

The front office isn’t afraid to use free agency and spend the bucks to get good players. Ryan is dynamic enough that the franchise can take chances on questionable players with great talent, and that makes them dangerous.

  1. If Sanchez pans out we have a lot of things in place. We have Mangold locked up for the next 7 years. D’Brick has been locked up. If we can only get Revis signed and Kyle Wilson turns into the player we expect him to we will have that CB duo for many years to come. Then there’s other young guys like Greene and Keller..

I feel if sanchez shows early development then that lessens revis leverage we don’t need an elite defense if we score more points. Id rather have sanchez playing well and not pay revis so we can spread that money around to better depth players

  3. I would hope so. We have a lot of key players that are in their prime or will be entering it soon.

The mets were built to win for years too! Wright, Beltran, Reyes, etc. Hope and potential make for good conversation in the preseason. But at some point you need to put wins on the board. The great team defense may not have the time to wait for a great team offense. Very rare do you have both. I think this years team is going to be as good as you are going to get in the future. Now or never. Next year there will be some other injury, some other contract issue.

The Mets were not built like this. Even in 2006 the smarter fans and analysts saw weaknesses and they were never addressed. This article points out that an important factor is a front office that is willing to make the necessary moves, which the Mets lack but the Jets have. I really don’t understand why the defense is built for this year, and why next year will be some other injury or contract issue. That’s happening now! I think they will be better next year, and a top 10 defense for years to come.

        pitching wins championships…. especially bullpens

      • I am not a baseball guy, but don’t completely agree on Mets. On paper 2007 they were good. Problem there was club house, they start fighting fans, like that was important. Instead of winning games they punished their rookie when he highfived fans after tieing game in the bottom of 9. The FO lost club house, and their player forgot what they are being paid for. They still have same type of problem.

That is not the same with Jets.

could we put the mets to rest they suck and their managers were no where near rex Im also a met fan you want to compare the 2010 jets are 86 mets

  5. It all depends on what happens in the offseason. It starts with Revis. As soon as this guy is signed, the Jets have some decisions to make regarding bringing back Harris,Holmes,Edwards and Cromartie. We also have Ellis coming off the books and Jenkins is getting older.Next years draft we need to work on bringing in a DT and DE for the furure. And Please…NO MORE VERNON GHOLSTONS LOL
