Jets Interested in Houshmandzadeh?

by Steiny on September 3rd, 2010 at 6:08 pm

Adam Schefter is reporting T.J. Houshmandzadeh is on his way out of Seattle. Bengals beat writer Joe Reedy is speculating the Jets might be interested in his services.
Housh is clearly and upgrade over David Clowney and it can be argued he is a better WR than Laveranues Coles.
This is definitely something we will keep our eye on over the next few days…

  1. avatar juunit says:

Yes he would definitely be an upgrade. I’m just not sure what the point is though. There are already plenty of weapons on offense. It’s up to Sanchez to get things done.

    • avatar endzoneview says:

      Locker room cancer = Housh

      That is all

    • avatar Balsley says:

I agree, he’d be an upgrade and the Jets have enough weapons but also the Jets pointed out on Hard Knocks they’re looking to cut costs to make room for Revis’ potential return. Housh wouldn’t accept league minimum which appears to be all the Jets are interested in spending. If they wanted to pay more for a WR they wouldn’t have let Coles go with the intentions of bringing him back again to pay him less money.

  2. avatar jj says:

we should just stick to running the ball…sanchez makes me nervous with all those picks he throws

  3. avatar Paul says:

I’m not opposed to signing him, but it’d probably take him several weeks to get the offense down, and by that time Holmes will be back.

  4. avatar Jetsetter says:

Just sign revis! Were good after that.

    • avatar viguy007 says:

Could it be Woody and the Jets know that the owners next year are looking to reduce the player percentage of revenues in the new CBA by 10 to 20%. Woody has sat in on the owners meetings and knows how hard hard-nosed they will be. This means that instead of having a higher salary cap for each team it will be will have a lower cap by 10 to 20%. A team that this year would have a cap of 125 million for this year (if it existed) would have a cap of 112.5 to 100 million next year. Contracts put in place this year would still be effected by the new cap. That is why ALL negotiations this year have been so difficult. This is why there is no Revis deal. Please address this issue.

  5. avatar deuce4417 says:

we’re all worried about money and we’re going out to sign this guy!?

  6. avatar Woodhead fan says:

No need for another WR that is going to cause trouble. He’ll complain about playing time and not getting the ball!!!

  7. avatar HHH says:

Even tho sanchez isn’t proven!! HOLY BABY JESUS DO IT!!

  8. avatar tom says:

can we please just get revid done! all our focus & attention should be on getting #24 back! im not ssying to pay him exactly what he is currently looking for, but find a way please!! they need his play & on field leaderdhip

    • avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Yea tom thats the “leader” the Jets are looking for to walk through the door…because as Darrelle lead this team last year, they made it to the AFC Championship game

Thats why they are all flat in the pre-season, cause #24 aint there

  9. avatar Jaro says:

No point. We have an abundance of riches at WR (not to mention Keller and LT) and our run-first O doesn’t need one more guy to have to worry about feeding the ball to.

If we were an air-it-out team, I’d say snap him up, but it doesn’t make sense to me.

  10. avatar Bent says:

But all I’ve been hearing all offseason is how washed up TJ is…

    Did Victor Cruz get cut?

  11. We got my boy Woodhead we don’t need this guy.

  12. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

I got an idea…don’t sign another vet at WR and sign Revis and Harris to long term deals

  13. avatar cmart28 says:

Not worth the locker room implications of signing him and cutting Coles.

    • avatar Bent says:

One benefit that I can see is that Minnesota is a WR down and the Jets play them in a month, so this keeps them a man short. Still not worth it, agreed, although it wouldn’t surprise me.

  14. This would be a nice pick up if the Jets needed a WR for a year. I say pass on him.

On another note… Anyone know where I can catch this weeks Hard Knocks Ep4?
    – Thanks in advance

  15. i swear all these news guys just mention the jets to generate more interest/hits/comments to whatever the heck theyre ‘reporting’. that move would make absolutely no sense whatsovever for the jets.

  16. avatar NJets says:

Did people forget about JCo or something? Why would we ever bring anyone else at WR right now that would take balls away from JCo’s incredible hands.

Lets run the damn ball and sign Revis. If Housh was that good hed still be in Cincy AND in Seattle.

  17. So, we are now going to run a spread offense? HOUSH, Holmes, Braylon, Cotch, DK? Who needs running backs? IF Housh is a 1 year deal, I guess I could sort of get it.

When is a bigtime DE, DT going to fall in our lap instead of another dime a dozen WR?

  18. I thought Revis was signed… For three more seasons… I must have bad memory.

  19. avatar kennydajet says:

the season boils down to 2 things imo…..development of Sanchez and Revis

If and when Mark lives up to his promise is when the Jets truly become elite

When and If Revis signs long term our defense will be elite for years to come

This year it may or may not happen but if those two keys come to frution then I truly believe the Jets will be very good for a long long time

  20. avatar steviek says:

the top 3 wr’s are obvious. when you get to 4th & 5th wr’s they really have to play specials. brad smith does. woodhead does. maybe clowney.
coles can be brought back for only (if he wants) the 3 games before holmes gets back.
housh on specials, guaranteeed $? i dont think so.
this sounds like bs floated by the agent.

  21. avatar Shane L. says:

Don’t get this at all. Hope it’s just a useless rumor. We have plenty of talent at WR to get by. Idk where he would fit in anyway, Braylon and Holmes both think they’re the #1 WR, and J-Co is arguably more valuable than both of them lol. You think Housh is gonna be the 4th WR without causing problems? Would be a huge mistake.

  22. avatar Dylan says:

We don’t need another WR that can’t play STs.

  23. forget this clown we already have enough WR’s – now we just need someone to throw them the ball…BENCH SANCHEZ and give Clemens the ball!! Clemens on one drive last night made Brunell AND Sanchez look horrible. I guarantee with Clemens under center our offense would be explosive (and give up far less INT’s).

    • avatar Dylan says:

Just stop… Clemens has never shown us ANYTHING as a starting QB. He had one or two good games as against 2nd and 3rd team defenses in the preseason. Clemens wasn’t even good yesterday. Brunell clearly outplayed him. Sanchez is clearly the best QB on this team. He led this team to the AFC Championship as a rookie. What has Clemens ever done?

  24. avatar TJBfan says:

If TJ can’t stick on the most WR deprived team in the NFL the last few years then he isn’t worth a spot on the roster at any cost.

I’m still down for Coles but it’ll be up to him if he wants to come aboard after game 1.

  25. avatar Shamik says:

Man, the last thing we need here is more receivers. Especially one never satisfied with his role. Housh was targeted by far the most in Seattle last year and was a league leader in targets and still complained that he wasnt being passed to enough. Plus, this team needs its QB to play better, more depth in RB, and better play out of its secondary. The WR corps are fine as is, frankly.

  26. I can’t even fathom how this inbred POS thinks Housh would come here. I mean how is that possible and why would we go there with the WR we have on our roster. I mean this is beyond dumb, this is painfully idiotic!

  27. It actually makes sense though especially since Housh is about to get cut. But who would you rather have Housh or Coles?
I Like Coles a lot but I think Housh is more talented at this point.

    • avatar Dylan says:

You would pay 7 mil per year for a 4th WR? Cause thats his base salary. We have absolutely no need for him. He would be our 4th WR for 12 games. Sanchez is going to have a hard enough time spreading the ball around as it is. Do we really need to add an overpaid, overrated, selfish WR to the mix?

  28. avatar Mars Blackmon says:

@steviek @Shane. Well said and a few others spoke some sense. Lol. Tj will want to b the man. After 4 games of not being the man (Braylon jco) santonio comes back. Brad smith isn’t a slouch as a slot or 4th option and LT catches out the backfield. We are good with 4 te since 2of them are recieving tight ends and 2 of the 3 of the rbs can catch (LT TRich Woodhead) sanchez doesn’t need a selfish/powerful personality in the huddle(tj) that will further hinder his already minimal development..any free dollars we have to throw around—add it to the guranteed portion of revis’s contract.

  29. avatar Team JCo says:

We won’t guarantee Coles’ contract but we would for Housh? Doesn’t make sense. He isn’t a clear upgrade and I think Coles is better anyway. Both in his skill set and knowledge of the O. Plus a better teamate and leader in the locker room.

  30. avatar RevisRetires says:

If they want to add someone to the O they should look for a Vet that can take Slauson and Vlad’s spot, I rather they load up more on D at this point.

  31. avatar TOON2388 says:

    we do not need him

  32. avatar RobStuff says:

Nah they really do not need him even though he is pretty good.

On a side note the jets need to be paying attention to their own instead of outsiders(Revis,Harris).

  33. avatar joe says:

Ed Reed just placed on PUP list

  34. Ed Reed on PUP? Where are you Raven King?!?

  35. avatar Dave says:

Both Housh and the Jets know he’s still a much better player at this point than a four game slot receiver fix.

  36. avatar HHH says:

yay! Ed reed has been put on Pup!! I count 2 int avoided by mark in that one move LMao!!

  37. One word…NO! It all comes down to Mark Sanchez maturing as a QB and no longer making rookie mistakes. Look at what we have surrounded Mark Sanchez with, one of the best Offensive Lines in the NFL with the exception of our LG, Jerricho Cotchery one of the most sure-handed receivers in the league, Braylon Edwards who I think can have a breakout year depending on Sanchez, Santonio Holmes, and Dustin Keller who will be a star in this league. Not to mention LT out of the backfield. WHY DO WE NEED ANOTHER RECEIVER? Our offense has enough weapons for Sanchez, it all comes down to him maturing as a QB and utilizing these weapons. TJ would be disasterous to the locker room and would screw up Sanchez’s development, not to mention that he’s not even that great of a receiver IMO. He had a few good years in Cincy opposite Chad Johnson-Ochocinco in his prime.

  38. avatar Nick says:

Enough already. Can we stick with what we have please

  39. Why can’t i post a link here?

  40. avatar Dylan says:

LisaZimmerman Per a source, as of right now, both David Clowney and Brooks Foster are on the 53-man roster. #Jets

  41. avatar Will says:

espn said they are looking for a trade maybe, time for trader mike to do what he does best

I dont care what everyone says about having to many good players already (which we do), you can never have too many weapons on offense. I say get him if we can get him for cheap

  42. avatar karl hungus says:

not just no, but hell no….they dont need another reciever that doesnt play ST..

two guys I wouldnt mind grabbing, Michael Robinson is a great ST player and would mean we could send the clown and mcwaste packing….

If the Eagles release him, Stacey Andrews……might be useful in case slauson and ducasse arent ready.

  43. Yo! Moderators can u respond? Why can’t i post external link here?

  44. Sign revis meet somewhere in the middle jets r at 120 mill over 10 years revis wants 160 Mill. Meet at 135-145 mill and get him on the Fu*king field for the first game!!!!! I’m flying up from Florida 2 see the first game and I bought a authentic Revis jersey and I want to see him there shutting down Boldin!!!!!!!! Go JETS!!!!!!

    • avatar JetMetVet says:

Whats the return policy at Modell’s anyway?

    • Revis demands a minimum of $15M a year, so the “compromise” would be 150M with the Jets guarantying most of the money even if his performance level declines in the future.

Also, based on his existing contract, he’d want this replacement contract front loaded too just in case some other player negotiates a larger contract and he has to demand more money after 3 or 4 yrs.

You’re proposal is reasonable and I agree with your frustration, but you can’t make Revis agree to it.

  45. avatar BigGigs says:

Enough of this….blah blah blah .

    One word: FOCUS

  46. Sign Revis to a 10 year deal.

    27 million signing bonus
10 million/year for the first nine years.
That gives him 117 million through 9 years.

In year 10 he is due 43 million and 5 dollars.

This way he gets 37 million in his pocket year 1.
He averages 16 million dollars and 50 cents/year that he desires.

The Jets pay him an average of just under 12 million a year through the first 9 years. A number they are comfortable with.

He can hold out after 4 years and still have averaged 16 million +/year or if he plans on living up to the full contract length the Jets can cut him after year nine and he only averages 12 million per year.

Its a win win for everyone and he plays at least 4 more years with the Jets when Tanny and Rex’s contract expire.

  47. Just heard Greg Buttle on ESPN and he said that the Jets are willing to Trade Revis for 2 1st round draft picks.

    • avatar JetsFan65 says:

What does he know about the jets personel? Lol…

    • No team is that stupid because they’d still have to pay him $15M / yr. — Okay, so maybe Al Davis IS that stupid but he’s the only one. Then he can brag he has $30M worth of CB’s on the field. The rest of his players would have to receive Practice Squad – type money; $5,200 per game.

I’d almost pay to see that.

    • I wonder who would want him. Hes not going to the AFC or any team we play this year we know that for sure.
I say trade him to KC for a 1st and Eric Berry.
Or Detroit for a 1st and Suh.

      • avatar WW85 says:

I would take Suh for Revis straight up to be honest. Would never happen. Suh is a freaking beast of beasts.

        • avatar Dylan says:

And Revis isn’t? That guy is the best CB since Prime Time.

          • True, Yeah Id have to get more than just Suh for Revis.
But if we do trade Revis we should definitely get a CB in the trade as well Dominique Rodgers Cromartie.

          • avatar WW85 says:

Suh’s potential is as big as Revis. Detroit would never do it anyway. Revis has had 1 spectacular year. He’s not going to Canton yet.

          • avatar Dylan says:

Yeah I agree with that. I would try and do everything possible to sign him before trading him though. If we do give him up, we need to get an elite young talent, a first round pick, and a CB has to be involved in the deal. Guys like Revis don’t come along practically ever.

          • avatar WW85 says:

No team is going to trade top young talent + starting corner +1st round pick?? I think a lot of us are delusional. Revis had 1 great year. What team would bankrupt their future for this greedy talent? I bet detroit is pretty proud of Suh & wouldn’t even want Revis straight up for Suh. Also, I bet if you ask GMs around the league, this would be a straight up trade or Suh. I’d love to know revis’s real value.

          • avatar Dylan says:

Wow its insane how much you are undervaluing Revis. The guy is the best defensive player in the entire NFL, and hasn’t even reached his prime yet. He could very well be the best defensive player in the NFL for the next 10 years. You think a rookie who has never even played a game is worth more than him? Thats a joke.

          • avatar WW85 says:

Do you think Detroit would trade Suh for Revis straight up? Suh is the most highly touted defensive recruit in years. I’m just saying I bet Revis & Suh’s trade value are about the same today. Revis’s value is hurt by his holdout somewhat. But Suh is due to make almost $14mm per year–More than the Jets are willing to pay Revis.

          • I Want DRC and A 1st For Revis. Thats Fair Isn’t It?

          • avatar Dylan says:

Revis is proven, less than two years older than Suh, and could probably be signed for less. I think Suh is going to be great, but what if he disappoints? He would be the most overpaid player in the NFL. The Jets would need to get a first round pick back in the deal, or another good young player.

  48. avatar zep says:

im getting a little tired of tannenbaum making madden real life, i dont want him.

  49. avatar Justin says:

Housh is a diva player who just isn’t very good anymore. I’d rather they take care of the current Jets first.

  50. avatar E. Weeks says:

Personal attacks are not necessary. And it is quite probable that the filter keeps flagging you.

  51. avatar Davidus1 says:

Why can’t people accept the facts?

Fact 1: The Jets cannot sign David Harris to an extension this season unless they pay 95% of the salary up front.

Fact 2: Housh will not cost the Jets $7 million per season. He will be released (I.e. No contract)

Fact 3: We cannot pay Revis $50mm in the final year of his deal. The way that we would have to structure the deal makes that impossible.

I’m posting this for everyones benefit because misinformation only pollutes the blog and your opinions.

    • avatar Bent says:

      1. More like 80% actually, but good point.

      2. I agree with your logic, but there are reports they’re looking at a trade.

      3. That would be quite easy to do, actually, just by bumping it up with a not likely to be earned incentive, which if both teams understood he’d hit free agency before the last year, could be anything, as long as Revis didn’t already achieve it last year.

  52. avatar cmonleon says:

this is dumb i just heard we are one of like 6 teams who put in a trade offer for him, this is so dumb if we trade hes still gonna make seven mill. if your gonna trade find another corner make revis shake in his boots, or just have even more depth for when he comes back.

  53. Guys, sorry it doesn’t match the thread, please let me know why i can’t post external links?

  54. avatar Iain says:

Out of interest re: Housh – why wouldn’t he sign for the league minimum? Seattle are on the hook for whatever he doesn’t earn elsewhere, so why not stick it to them by signing for minimum and taking over $6m from the team that cut him?

  55. avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

TJ wouldn’t be a bad addition to the team. If they were able to make this happen, which I seriously doubt, it says that they must be seeing a lot more from Sanchez in practice than they, an he, have shown in the preseason games.

  56. i think this going to be a breakout year for brad smith all around as a receiver and wildcat qb/rb…he’s been pretty valuable to us as a gunner on special teams and offense but this year hes going to take it up a notch on offense…with all our weapons on offense teams can easily forget about smith which will help out his game plus its his 4th year as a receiver
