Revis Era in NY Coming to an End?

by Steiny on September 3rd, 2010 at 8:39 am

In a new twist in the Darrelle Revis saga, Jason Cole of Yahoo sports is speculating Darrelle Revis may have played his last game in a Jets uniform.

Here’s a little piece of information for Ryan and the rest of the New York Jets: If Revis doesn’t get a new contract soon, New York doesn’t have to worry about the star cornerback showing up. Ever.

As the clock ticks to the beginning of the NFL season, the relationship between the Jets and Revis is ticking toward an end. A divorce, really. That might sound like hysteria to some but it’s reality.

[..]

If the Jets can’t bridge the gap between what they are offering Revis and what he believes they promised him at the end of last season, he’s not showing up, period.

As in ever again.

[..]

To put it in another perspective, Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning will soon reset the bar for what the top players in the league are worth. The Colts will be lucky – yes, lucky – to get Manning’s deal done for less than an average of $25 million a year.

And if the top quarterback in the league is worth $25 million a year, what is the top cornerback or defensive end, left tackle or wide receiver – all guys who drastically impact the quarterback – are going to be worth?

There’s going to come a point where $16 million a year for Revis is a decent price.

The Jets can counter that by saying that they’re doing Revis a favor by redoing his contract now, at least one year in advance of free agency. That’s reasonable, but here’s another way of looking at it: If Revis plays out his contract over the next three years, he gets $21 million. The Jets then would be forced to put a franchise tag (assuming the franchise tag still exists) for a minimum of $18 million for 2013 (based on the fact that Revis’ 2012 salary is scheduled to be $15 million.

That’s $39 million over four years, but then the averages start to really jump, going way north of $20 million a year. From that perspective, $16 million a year looks like a good price.

But more important than any of that is a simple fact: Either the Jets get this done or they never have Revis again.

Crazy.  I never thought in a million years it would ever get this far.  As Cole said, the clock is ticking.

In my opinion Revis will not be on the field come September 13th. I’ve said many times both sides are going to need to give in for a deal to work. He has shown no signs of budging, and neither have the Jets.   At this moment in time both parties are refusing to move.

With the season starting next week and Revis MIA the next few days should be very interesting…

What do you guys think?  Has Revis put on a Jets uniform for the final time?

If it was up to me, YES.

I dont really care about four years down the road, the pot of gold is right in front of us, we need to grab it NOW.

I would make one improved offer today, and if he declines I would definatly explore trading him now, for the very reasons Cole indicates, but more importantly because it might be able to fill a hole this season.

If you cant trade him, then trade a high draft pick for a vet CB, we need more depth at that position. Certain they will grab someone off waivers, but if at all possible it would be great to add a vet CB now.

    • avatar Jimmy says:

The thing is, this article was probably written by Revis’s agents. It’s to force management’s hand into trading him because they’re not budging. To me, it’s a good sign, because they’re running out of cards to play. The only other card they have is sit out the year, and nothing ruins players faster than sitting out a whole year.

The agreement’s coming soon. There’s just too much to lose otherwise.

      • I agree, this sort of reaks of his agents. They have to be getting a little desperate, because as you said, nothing is worse for a player of his caliber than to forfeit a year. Add to that the growing possibility of a work stoppage next season and it makes one wonder whether he would be willing to sit out two full season – and what his value would be at the other end if that happens. Somethings gotta give.

      • avatar Tom says:

Jets won’t trade him. They would rather let him sit out and rot on the vine than give him an opportunity. The guy has three yrs of commitment left and if he doesn’t sign soon he is likely to end up sitting out two yrs (Next year maybe lockout) of his prime earning time. Why give him an opportunity elsewhere when he is screwing his teammates?

  2. avatar Benny says:

I really hope the Jets set a precedent here and refuse to cave. Let this guy sit for the next 3 years. Then see what he gets. I can’t believe this jerk is doing this. Thanks for putting a damper on what could be a great season Mevis.

    • avatar James in TN says:

Let him sit, if nothing else LOWER the offer.

      • I’ve said it before and will say it again….

Let Revis sit for the next “Three Years” which means don’t let him near the practice field, and don’t let him play! After three years of being benched, no one will offer him a large contract after missing all that play time and the best he may get is a vet’s minimum!! Hell his talent will diminish as well and he will never be the same caliber player as he was in 2009!!!!

Don’t pay him and don’t’ trade him as that would set a precedent with other players in the future!!!

        F*** Him !!!!

  3. avatar WW85 says:

What a bunch of baloney. Revis is now 3 years from RESTRICTED free agency. IF he doesn’t play for 3 years, the Jets can still match any offer from another team. HE IS UNDER CONTRACT. If he wants to throw his career away, that is up to him. Comparing him to Manning is ludicrous. Peyton is the best player in the league, the greatest QB to EVER play this game & he can single handedly turn a mediocre team into an elite. Revis is not in that stratospere. We are a better contender with him but we contend without him. Revis had ONE 1 ONE 1 ONE SPECTACULAR season. I’d rather have Mangold, Brick, Harris & take my chances. Let Revis sit during the best years of his career. It’s fine with me at this point.

  4. avatar Todd says:

    NFL to do list:

    1) Rookie Wage Scale
    2) A more serious pool of rookie money to go to players years 1-3 that outperform their contracts.
    3) Retirement/Disability/Backpay for NFL vets

    4) Revis…your awesome…but for 16 million a season we are going to just draft a new guy in the 1st or 2nd round every 3 years and let them go when they get money crazy.

  5. avatar Ryan says:

this article is nonsense…. you do realize Revis is under contract for 3 more years right?

If he doesn’t play for the jets hes only hurting himself and ruining his career. Since there wont be any fooball next year he will be losing 2 years in his prime that he will never get back.

Do you honestly think hes ready to sit out 2 years?

    Lets get real.

  6. avatar jiggz says:

Let him rot. Pay David Harris the money he deserves. No one is above the team.

  7. avatar Brendan says:

The starting defense gave up 1 TD all preseason, it’s not like this team is going to lose 10 games. I never liked Cole, but this is piss-poor reporting.

Champ Bailey’s CAP NUMBER is $13 million. That’s not saying he’s getting paid $13 million this year. That number is raised because of the bonus he received when signing his contract. But yeah, Jason, report it as if he’s earning $13 million this year because it supports your article.

Cole also cites Gilbert’s holdout as being a success, even though after he sat out a full season he came back a shell of his former self and never even came close to playing to the level expected for his $7 mil/year salary.

And Aso is making $15.17 this year, sure, but what happens after this season? He will most likely be cut. Cole also neglects to mention this fact.

So he uses two contracts, Aso & Champ, one that will almost certainly be ended early (Aso) and one that is a cap number in the general neighborhood of Revis’ price, but the real salary isn’t even close.

Nicely done, Jason, thanks for showing up.

  8. avatar deuce4417 says:

he will be a jet. alot of the offseason and preseason is all about smoke screens

now….. just because he will sign eventually does not mean i’m a huge fan of his anymore. if you look up selfish in the dictionary then his face should be right there!

without actually saying it he has said i’m mor important than mangold, dbrick, harris, holmes, edwards. that says alot about a person right there. revis should read “a puppy that lost his way”, thank you mrs. lippy!!!!

  9. If I’m the Jets I come to Revis and say, look — neither side is budging, that’s clear. So let’s meet halfway and get it done right now. We both lose, we both win. If you say no, we are removing this offer from the table and going back to our initial offer, never coming back to this. This is not a step towards negotiation, it is a one-time compromise. Take it or leave it.

If he leaves it, it’s unlikely he plays as a Jet anytime soon, but that is starting to look unlikely anyway.

  10. avatar JG from Mass says:

Soon to be on-sale. Revis jerseys. Right next to jones and faneca gear.

  11. avatar tyrone says:

well that article was stupid I read it yesterday and cole is a miami man he writes for the miami herald or use to .So what does revis do for 3 years hang out with grandma .I wish the media stays away from his family .cause that report about the jets are treating revis wrong is bull 121 mil is not bad .its more money then anybody in that town will make in a lifetime. How much did revis agents pay this miami guy to write this.maybe its time to forget revis and his greddy agents and family but dont trade him .its time foe the owners to make a statement here.3 years then when hes 28 years old and rusty he could play for peanuts how quickly money takes away humility by a family who never had this type of money before.

  12. avatar Dave says:

I am ready for the Kyle Wilson era to begin as a NY Jet.
Revis agents have poisoned his mind.
45 million Americans won’t eat dinner today. Young men fighting for our freedom overseas.
And $12 million PER YEAR isn’t enough for him to play football?

History will judge what Revis decides, but he may not have a choice much longer.

    • avatar Andrew C says:

So true .. used to like the guy but mevis can take a walk .. trade him for two ones to a lousy team like Tampa and well get two quality players in a rookie salary slot for a lot less money and not blow up our cap for one guy

  13. avatar WW85 says:

I’m getting to the point that I’d be OK trading him for picks & players. Let another team bankrupt their future.

  14. avatar Brandon says:

    Revis ha sno leverage.
Even if he was making 500K a year, he has no leverage.
All he can do is sit and hope the Jets trade him.
But its not like he becomes a free agent next year.

So the answer is, by sitting, especially long term, he isn’t going to get what he wants. Instead he should push for some more millions this year (which the Jets offered, but he can still ask for a few more). Then if he can produce like last year he will have greater value. Keep in mind that he has had 1 incredible year, maybe the following year he would just be very good. He doesn’t have a long term track record. If he duplicates last year, and has 2 years left, maybe the Jets are more likely to negotiate a big contract.

However – this is all speculation – no need to get worked up about this. I dont care what Jason Cole speculates, that is not even worth writing about.

The real reason Im posting is:

Stop worrying about Revis every day. We have no knowledg eof the behind the scenes negotiations, and are just getting annoyed. Revis is n’t necessarily greedy, he may really think he is worth 16MM a year, and may be heavily influeneces (i.e mislead and ill-advised) by his uncle. So its not that Revis is greedy, he may be delusional :-)

  15. avatar InfDayz says:

My thing is this about Revis if he wants to sit 3 yrs let him he isnt hurting the Jets he is purely destroying his image as a selfish player if he wants to be the next DIVA let him most DIVA’s end up going year by year contracts I dont seem him duplicating the season he just had 3 yrs later if he sits thats his fault.

  16. avatar Electric Ham says:

What choice does he have?? Wait out 3 years until hes a free agent? and then what, even so I wouldn’t doubt that there are penalties in place if he does not show up just like how he lost a year of eligibility this year. I don’t understand how Revis has a choice, either he plays for the Jets or he sits on the couch.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Depending on the new CBA, Revis could potentially be a RFA after that 3rd year, and then they could franchise tag him. So they could actually screw him for much longer than just 3 years.

  17. Let him stew, and by the way the Jets did move and offer him a improved deal. The problem here is that he just wants the Jets to tear up the 3 years he’s got left on his deal and give him 16m per year from the off, o and he wants fully guaranteed money not what Mangold and Brick got, even though he knows the team can’t offer that except in the form of an upfront bonus.

The think i find weird is that the sole reason that the Jets wanted him to have a six year deal was so they didn’t have him, mangold and brick all needing extensions in the same year, and look what happened in the end,

    O and he’s a prick

  18. avatar TJBfan says:

The problem with comparing him to Peyton is that Peyton isn’t under his ROOKIE contract, has won a superbowl and if the 1st point wasn’t clear he’s been spectacular a freaking long time.

I do agree a divorce may be near however I can tell you this: the day 16 mil a year becomes a bargain for Revis is the year he HOLDS out again.

The Jets are smart not to cave, I own a revis jersey I think he’s the best out there but the cornerback position doesn’t win superbowls.

We don’t need to trade for a high end cornerback we have cromartoe and wilson, we just need to bring in some good depth that could play number 3 vs stronger teams.

  19. avatar jcjets says:

I don’t get why, as a player, you’d want to sign a 10 yr contract. There’s no way you’re gonna see that backend money.

5 years- $60M with $25 million in guarantees sounds about right, to me.

    • avatar Bent says:

If you’re as good as you claim to be OF COURSE you’re going to get that money. Elite players don’t renegotiate down (unless they exceptionally decide to do so to help the team).

If they don’t want to pay him any more, they have to cut him, rather than holding onto him until the contract expires and then being able to franchise him and decide where he goes if you’re going to trade him. You either get the money in your contract, or you are completely freed up to earn whatever you are worth and play for who you like. If you’re not worth what you were contractually due to receive, then you shouldn’t have had a deal that high in the first place.

jc – Double the guarantees and add 20m onto the value of the contract and Revis still might turn that down, based on the reports we’ve heard so far.

      • avatar Ghost On says:

Turning down 80, with 50 guaranteed, for five years? That’s just, that’s insane. This whole thing makes me experience such a wide range of emotions, I’m honestly getting burned out by it and that’s not how I want to be heading into this season.

      • avatar jcjets says:

but a 5 year contract would put Revis back into free agency at 29 with a pretty low chance of him getting cut before the contract is up. The market is not likely to go down for shutdown corners..and who was the last player that actually played out a 10 year contract? I can’t remember any..

The numbers I mentioned are what I think he should get, not what Revis wants.

  20. avatar tomg says:

I’ve said it all along, screw revis. Let him sit for 3 years and than the jets can hopefully sign comartie, holmes, edwards and harris. Next years draft the jets can draft another corner.

  21. avatar Me says:

I can’t believe this “article” was even posted here.

Not ONE source was mentioned that referenced Revis never playing for the Jets again. It was a PURE SPECULATION “article” written by an ex-Dolphin beat writer. Might as well have come from Bleacher Report or Mike Florio…

  22. avatar Bent says:

Cole isn’t breaking any news here, he’s just speculating.

I actually think the most likely outcome was that he sits out the whole year and then renegotiates in the offseason. Only if he can’t come to an agreement will they trade him.

I just don’t see how we can assume he’d get the money he wants from any other team. Yeah, there might be a few teams crazy enough to pay him that amount, but they are the ones that are always spending, so they won’t have the cap space.

I do appreciate that the media and fan backlash if he sits out the season will make returning very difficult. All that’s going to lead to is the Jets taking less than full value for him in a trade and Revis ending up with a contract lower than he wanted (as well as having wasted a year of his prime).

    • Bent, I hope that you are wrong. I agree with all those brilliant Jetsblog posters who realize the only smart move is to let Revis sit and retire himself.

There is no trade worth making for Revis. No one will give us even comparable value, it rewards this selfish behavior setting a precedent for every disgruntled Jet, and weakens our team by having to face Revis.

Again, as I have been posting repeatedly, and now others are saying, just let him sit home and make nothing. If our FO will not trade him, doesn’t cave into a contract that is unreasonable, our team will be better off. Players who play and put team first get paid. Players who try to blackmail the team end their careers.

No trade. No stupid contract. Revis retires 3 or 4 years from now.

  23. avatar George says:

I read the article yesterday about Cimini interviewing Revis’ Grandmother about the situation, and how she said the Jets are being unfair..Please.. I felt sick to my stomach..I love Revis and want him there more than anything, but MEvis better come down on his asking price.. I mean who does this guy think he is? Does he deserve to be the highest paid at his position? Yes..Can u base that off the most rediculous contract in NFL history(Courtesy of AL Davis) ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! For Revis asking to be paid more than Asomugha is insane!! That contract should be thrown out along with Al Davis!! C’mon Revis be reasonable!! If the Jets caved in to his demands I would fault them, no player (accept maybe a QB)is worth that $$.. Do not fault the Jets here, why do you think the Raiders organization is in the position that it’s in, for decisions like that.. Revis could not be more wrong here, let him sit out and prove just how SELFISH he is

  24. Trade him to an NFC club for an experienced CB and their #1 next year. What guarantee do we have that Revis, even if he coomes back will play lights out if he doesn’t get his $16 mill.

Time for a blockbuster trade, revis for a CB and #1, or Revis for a CB and a rush DE.

    • originaljetfan

Are you NUTS!!!! Why should the team trade this a$$ clown? I don’t want anyone in the NFC or AFC to sign him!!! There is no reason to trade him and then possibly face him in a championship game!! No Way Dude!!!

If the team does decide to trade him then I hope they send him to the worst team in the league in the most dangerous place to live at maximum value, and they better include a form of a poison pill so he can’t be traded to a winning team without a 1st, two 2nd, and two 3rd round draft picks being sent to the Jets!!!

Sit him and let him ROT!!!

  25. avatar tomg says:

    Bent,
maybe the jets should consider trading him now knowing he will sit out the season especially when there probably won’t be a season next year.

    • avatar staz says:

trade him after next season cause he will suck cause he hasnt played for 2 seasons

    • avatar Bent says:

All I can see them getting is some draft picks, which means the team doesn’t benefit in the short term any more than it would be trying again next year and THEN making a trade.

The upside of being able to retain Revis far outweighs that of any draft picks, so while that option still exists, they might as well keep trying. Even if they still can’t get a deal done this year, it will be a lot easier to bridge the gap under the new CBA, so the chances of being able to get him signed for 2011 (if there’s a season) should be much higher.

I certainly think they should not let themselves be held to ransom.

  26. avatar charleyjet says:

To answer your question, NO I don’t think he has played anywhere near his last game. He will be in uniform by week 3 or before. And this guy from Yahoo sports is talking out of his blow hole, like the rest of the know-nothings who have “reported” their scoops on this situation.

  27. avatar johhnyjetson says:

well by holding out revis has forfitted, or however you spell it, his eligibility for free agency. so really the jets have him for 4 years. i would call his agents today and offer them 10yr 130 mill with 45 mill guarantee and tell them that everyday that goes by that he doesnt sign 5 mill comes off the guarantee money. you would see how fast he would sign.

im so tired of the players who really dont have a “real” job complain about the money the make. look at those poor miners who are stuck in a hole for months just so they can feed there families. maybe they should stick revis down there with them. JETS LET HIM SIT AND ROT!!!

  28. avatar Nick says:

Lets face it, if he isn’t there for game one he’s never playing for us again. Do you really think he’s going to cave in mid way thru the season? And do you really think Rex will push to get him back if they start out poorly? Hell NO, he will feel betrayed by Revis.

HE Aint Playing for the Jets EVER again (if he’s not there by 9/13).

With this the obvious case….what do you guy’s think we shoudl do? And please don’t say sit him for three years, that is the only thing that is definately NOT going to happen.

  29. avatar staz says:

**** revis just play. i hope the jets dont give him what he wants. let him sit out this year then the lock out next year and he will miss 2 straight years and he will suck

  30. if revis misses a game i will hate him forever

  31. avatar Andy says:

I do not know if he will sign before the first game. I have a feeling though that it will go into the season. From all of the ways I heard that this will get resolved, this one makes sense:
THe hold out will go into the season. Now if in the first couple of games the Jets continue to have a great defense and shut down the other teams recievers and win some games without Revis, then Revis has lost his leverage and the Jets have it. The Jets can say hey we won with out you so take our offer or leave it. Now if the Jets in the first couple of games get burned in the secondary and lose a couple of games then Revis has the leverage and Revis can say pay me…you need me.
Either way this needs to get resolved. Hopefully I am wrong and a deal gets done soon.

  32. Revis should come back and play and tell them he will sit out real games next year if they don’t do something soon. Don’t let the personal issues affect the TEAM. Get on the field and deal with the front office on YOUR time. Tell them that next year he will miss the season too, whatever. He has no leverage and knows it, so just go play. Worst case scenario, if he gets hurt this year, he is still under contract for two more years and by then any injury will be fully healed. It’s more likely he dominates and gets more than the Jets are offering now.

    • avatar JetMetVet says:

The only problem with that is that there’s no way Revis can be more “idolized” by the media than at this point. If he gets on the field again, he’ll likely not be able to top last seasons results. At that point, his value goes down.

  33. avatar jets1974 says:

Trading Revis is pretty much impossible. No team is willing to give up 2 first round picks plus pay him 16 million a year. Not even the Raiders.

  34. avatar JetsFan233 says:

This article was clearly written by Revis’s agents. Let him sit for three years.

    • avatar Nick says:

Why do people keep saying this? This is the only thing that will not happen! He’s getting traded. period. Even if he sits all year, he’s still getting traded (unless he comes in before 9/13).

      • Nick, people who understand business keep saying this because trading Revis would be the stupidest thing they could do.

        1) They cannot get fair value — no team will give us 2 #1s and pay him $16 mil.

        2) It makes his agents heros. They will get more clients who use this strategy because a three year contact will mean nothing.

        3) Other agents will try this on the Jets.

If anyone voluntarily rewards the selfish player WHO IS ALREADY LOCKED UP FOR 3 YEARS so he gets more than the good guys (and another team will give Revis more than Mangold and Brick), fails to improve team, and add a key player to an opponent

        • Sorry for the reply to my reply. My computer keyboard bit back. The last point should have read:

If anyone voluntarily rewards the selfish player willing to ignore his teammates and not honor his word or a contract and WHO IS ALREADY LOCKED UP FOR 3 YEARS so he gets more than the good guys (and another team will give Revis more than Mangold and Brick), fails to improve team (because no one will give us enough value), and add a key player to an opponent (in any division), they deserve to be spanked and they will eventually put themselves out of business.

Trading Revis is the only stupid move they can make other than paying him more than any CB is worth.

          harlan

    • avatar Bent says:

I think that’s a very important point to note. Nobody seems to be that critical of the agents and I’m pretty sure that’s because they are seen as a potential source. Nobody wants to alienate them and miss out on a potential scoop.

      • avatar Nick says:

That remindes me of one point that coudl change everyting. If mid year, Revis was to fire his agent and apoligise, then i think the Jets could take him back. Barring that, he’s probably done as a Jet.

      • I made same point few times before, but very nice addition, Bent, explaining why media leaves effect of agents out of reports.

  35. avatar Rharnick says:

This article sounds like it was ghost written for Revis’ agents.

  36. avatar Michael says:

This is the problem. There is a limited amount of money to pay all the players on the team. If you pay one player a large amount of the pie, the rest of the team suffers. You can’t keep a LC or others. More importantly, if you want to upgrade your pass rush, there’s no money left to sign major free agents in the future. You also have Harris, Holmes, Edwards, etc. in the last year of their contracts.

The successful teams are the ones that can walk the fine line of paying the players a fair but not top salary. The Patriots are the best example. How long has Tom Brady been paid less than the top quarterback in the league? I think he has even renegotiated his contract so the Patriots can sign free agents. Other top players on the Patriots have done the same. The Patriots have chosen not to re sign player that demanded top salaries.

Getting Revis back at any cost will hurt the team in the long run. If he remains unreasonable, the Jets should try to trade him for a legitimate pass rusher. It is easier to stop an offense by pressuring the quarterback than trying to cover 5 receivers. Remember the AFC title game?

  37. avatar Brad says:

Ban the dude who referred to Revis as a monkey please.

The article is clearly a plant by an agent of Revis’. There is no way that you can say 18 million for a corner at any point is a good deal for the franchise considering the CBA is a lock to change.

  38. avatar tomg says:

Since I read Revis looks up to his uncle and respects him allot, I do believe if the jets don’t agree to his asking price and the season starts, I truly feel will follow his uncle’s footsteps. The Jets should then call around the league and see if any teams are interested in trading for him (Revis). The reason the jets should try now because Revis would be worth more now then next year.

    • avatar tyrone says:

you sound like you are working for revis agents .thats what swartz or whatever his name is wants .they are a lot of teams would sign him for that money even the fins .but the stratergy for the jets is to play good defense and no trade he will be dum to hold out .believe me this manb is comming back.gilbert wasnt contracted for 3 years .revis has no levrege here.and he better be carefull he dont get hurt cause he has no contract.then he fid out how much his agents care about him.

  39. avatar Testiculon says:

I am really starting to despise Revis. He is the epitome of a me-first-team-last player. The only reason I still have a Revis jersey in my drawer is because I can’t decide on the most spectacular way to destroy it. I’ll never wear it again.

  40. I don’t think he will be back in time for the first 2 games, and what will piss me off is he will be rooting for Balt and N.E to win so as 2 put pressure on the Jets

  41. avatar MarkD says:

Who is this guy and what makes his sources any better than Cowlishaw or Graziano?

This guy is talking out of his arse and by putting the article up he got more recognition than had received in his entrie career

  42. I have lost all respect for this jack-a$$, and I can not believe he his pulling this crap! I’m getting to the point where I hope someone shows up at his door and when he answers it they punch him in the mouth!!! Maybe that would knock some sense into his, his agents, his mothers, and his grand-mothers heads!!!

  43. avatar 25 million? says:

  45. avatar nicko says:

im gettin sick of Revis and his family…..since when is 120 million not a decent offer.
i say trade his ass to the NFC for 2 first rounders. then lets sign Asomugha the minute he becomes a free agent. screw you revis u clown

  46. avatar 0h the ag0ny says:

ban the guy who called Revis a monkey…

Since the comment obviously caused offence, I removed it.

I’m going to assume it wasn’t intended to be offensive because that particular commenter has never been a problem before, but we would prefer people to think about their choice of language a bit more carefully.

  47. avatar jets1974 says:

Once again, it is imposible to trade him… what team is going to give up 2 first round draft picks and then overpay Revis 16 million a year for a guy who had one — ONE!! — great year???

    Let’s get real…

  48. avatar Albert says:

I like revis, I want him apart of this team but now it comes down to what’s right. And both parties are at fault. But here’s what revis has to realize, he holds out into the season, and he basically causes bad blood. Cause if start off poor because of him, the season is doomed and if he comes back a shell of himself, the locker room will destroy him. He will put a target on himself even more than Ryan has put on his team. That’s what he is failing to realize. The team was cool with revis holding out during training camp, but during the season? That’s not going to be so well liked by the team. If I’m the jets, if you’re not in this locker room come opening night…..see you in 2012 after the lockout. Pull the offer and say no deal

    • avatar JetMetVet says:

Agreed. Fans and teammates are mostly “supporting” revis getting paid, but when he starts causing the team to lose games, his teammates, the fans, the media, and New Yorkers won’t be playing nice anymore. It’s a fine line, Darrelle.

      Be adored or be despised.

  49. avatar Nick says:

What if there is a new rookie wage scale once the CBA is signed? Then, hot damn, we could eaisly afford the two first rounders we would want for Revis next year…..

  50. avatar Tonk says:

If Revis doesn’t wear a jets uniform ever again. He will never wear one. The jets will sit on his contact

  51. avatar Jason says:

I think an article like this is all speculation. There really is no basis for it. Its also not really the QB market that really sets the dollar values for the positions. Its more the draft picks (though that will change in the future). Look at it this way, Eli Manning made a boatload of money on his extension with the Giants. I dont think you ever heard of a negotiation at another position where they came in and said Eli got a 12% raise over Roethlisberger so we want a 12% raise over the highest paid player at our position. Even assuming that Coles methodology is correct and the QB market drives the whole market, outside of the Aso deal a corner is basically paid around 60% of the top QB value. So 25 million per year for Peyton still would not come out to 16 million per year for Revis. It would be about 15.3. So 16 million is not going to be a bargain.

As for the franchise tag type argument again it makes little sense. Revis is likely going to blow the 15 million dollars in year 6. More likely it will be 13 million. So we are looking at 550K for 2010, 5 million in 2011, and 13 million in 2012 for a total of 18.5 million. Less his payback to the Jets of 1.3 million for voiding his deal and its basically 17 million for 3 years. Give the franchise tag twice and you have salaries of 15.6 and 18.8. From the Jets perspective thats 5 years at 10.3 million. Its impossible to make an argument that 16 million per year now somehow represents a bargain price in the future. The numbers just dont add up.

The other issue is that when players sit for a year their market shrinks if he thinks he can simply demand a trade and get the money. Teams usually dont get as excited about a guy who has not played the game for a full year. Questions come up about the kind of shape he is in and how things have changed. Mike Vick missed two years and hes a shell. Granted Revis will have access to far better training facilities, but I dont think he will have 31 other teams beating down the door for his services.

  52. avatar steviek says:

since when does a cb get to compare himself to a qb in pay scale who’s won a super bowl?

we really dont if the jets are making fair offers. i dont have a grudge against revis wantign some guarantees, but i do have an issue with it has to be at least x because i’m the best. it has to be $40M guaranteed as opposed to $30M?

i have to agree with those that have specualted that it really comes down to the guarantees, and not rolling guaranteed money.

  53. avatar jets1974 says:

We have learned from Hard Knocks that Tanny’s people skills absolutely suck. He’s really cold blooded. With that having been said, I think Tany will have no problem letting him sit.

    Good for Tanny.

  54. avatar Matt3222 says:

yeah this article def sounds like it was written by Team Revis and it’s posturing on their part. They do make a valid point though, if he sits out the whole year, are we all of a sudden going to gave next year? that’s unlikely. If that’s the case though, the Jets really should stick it to them and hold his rights as long as then can. If he does move on eventually have fun going to play defense for something other than the best defensive mind in football buddy….after your prime was wasted holding out like selfish ass!

I really hope a deal gets done, but when i see stuff in the press about his family saying a $120 MILLION DOLLAR OFFER…..repeat 120 MILLION DOLLARS….is a “slap in the face” I think they are all pieces of trash.

  55. avatar J Roc says:

I think you should remove this post immediately

  56. This article is asinine. No new facts. No new sources. Just speculation on his part (former Miami writer).

It doesn’t address the fact that the Jets have him under contract for 3 years (plus 4th if the franchise him).

From a purely economic standpoint, sitting out a year (or more) from Revis’ standpoint would be a disaster. Even if he got a monster contract after leaving the Jets, when you factor in 3 years of lost wages + fines (which the Jets would certainly recoup if he went to another team), he would NEVER make the same amount of total money as if he took the current renegotiated offer with the Jets. The math just doesn’t add up.

The more I think about it, it’s Revis who has more to lose than the Jets. The only caveat, is the Jets need to stand their ground.

No panic. No renegotiating. No trades. He will sit, accumulating fines, with diminishing skills, losing his standing amongst the fan base, with decreasing advertising potential, until he realizes that he is NOT above the team, and that he has FOOLISHLY overplayed his hand.

Revis is truly on an island now, one of his own making.

    • avatar davidus1 says:

This is a great post, but lets not totally discount what this writer is saying.

Obviously the Jets hold all of the cards here, anyone can see this, but we are totally removing the human element here and that is a mistake.

At the end of the day, if Revis feels hurt or gets stubborn and emotional then he will refuse to play. You just never know the makeup of a person, and it is possible that the longer this drags on the less likely it is that Revis will ever play for the Jets. I dont think it warranted an entire article, but it is valid.

  59. avatar zenlaw says:

Does anyone remember the concern that was raised at the beginning of free agency when the Jets let go of some core players and signed guys like Cromarte and Holmes?

We read post after post about whether the Jets would have team chemistry with all of these changes.

What does caving in to Revis’ demands do to team chemistry? At this point, how do you think the other 52 players on the Jets’ roster feel about Revis and his obstinance?

  60. avatar jettison says:

I SAY THE JETS ASK OR DEMAND” GREEDVIS” TO PAY HIS FINES NOW! Let him scratch up the $600,000. Why do good people with good personalites let agents destroy them?

  61. Let’s go Revis!!!!

Stick it to suckup and puppetface!!!!

  62. avatar coachmarv25 says:

without Revis, u can forget about stopping Peyton Manning, Tom Brady will sexually abuse our secondary & I’m a Jets fan. Coverage & Pressure go hand in hand. Even if the Jets overpay for him they look like geniuses. I don’t see the conundrum. Don’t compare him to Kerry, or Leon or even Curtis. Just pay him!

  63. avatar Nikolas says:

I have been a Revis supporter and I want him to get paid what is fair. We really do not know what the Jets offer is and the 12m/ year with X guarantee money reported by the press may be a total lie! The Jets FO has provided false information in the media before. Therefore, all these Jets fans who now hate Revis “calm down”. We do not know what is going on! You cannot condemn people on publicly known information because the information can be erroneous.
The older Jets fans should know and remember that we invaded Iraq- 8 years of war , 2 trillion dollars in debt, 4,500 of our soldiers dead, 100, 000 civilian Iraqis dead, a country in ruins- on the premises (faulty information) that Iraq had Al-Qaida connections and nuclear weapons.
Calm down, both sides are grown ups and they will do what they think is best for both of them. Simply, I feel that without Revis our chances for a trip to the SB are miniscule.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Revis has two of the biggest scumbag agents in all of sports. They’re leaking information to the press to incite fan emotion and pressure the team into making a move.

  64. avatar CG says:

all this crap about how the jets D gave up 1 TD all preseason is the worst argument for why they should forget about Revis. They played the gmen without their best WR steve smith, the panthers without the even better WR steve smith and with an unproven who the hell is matt moore type of guy, and the skins WITHOUT mcnabb which basically throws that game out the window and the 4th game nobody played

  65. avatar Cole says:

Just like all the “he’ll sign soon” speculations, this is just speculation. Cole is an ex-Dolphins beat writer who would love to imagine a worst case scenario for New York, notice the “apocalyptic” tone of this article. I’m not saying that hes wrong, just that like all other speculative arguments, to procede with caution. His argument is no better than all the others that just list the reasons why he WILL come back. Combine this article with all the articles predicting the reasons for his return and you’d have a great article outlining why he will and will not return but no solid evidence or truth behind either. This article only enforces my use of the wait and see policy.

  66. avatar Pdubbs says:

This guy sucks… wayy too much drama.

He could have been 12-13 mil richer today and playing for a Superbowl contender.

Yea, your agents really want whats best for you. Yet another dumb athlete letting their untalented agent ruin their life.

you really **** the bed on this one Revis !

  67. avatar tyrone says:

I would love to go 15-1 and lead in defense wilson rookie of the year comartie 14 int.and in the super bowl and win then trade him to raiders in exchange for aso then all the money endorsements go to alCROtraz and wising is.tthis is a possibility.

  68. avatar Joe who? says:

This is all theater! As Sonny Werblin said Broadway, “it’s show business Joseph”. Let’s just enjoy the process. MEvis is showing a value system below disdain. But what can we expect when athletes are worshiped by the media, and let’s face it, us.

MEvis will return. The show will go on. He will be richer and we are gonna have a great season, of entertainment.

    Go Jets!

  69. avatar BKWRXWgn says:

So the show must go on, if Revis sits then it’s on him to jeopardize his own career. I just wonder how the FO will play this out, let him rot or trade him. I’m pretty sure if Revis sits home for “3 years” he won’t get the same $ he wants right now. I do blame his freaking agents though since their doing the same with Jackson out in SD, what a bunch of pr**ks!

    • BKWRXWgn, Just like with lawyers, people are responsible for their own decisions. His agents are putzes and if the Jets do not cave and do not trade him, they will have cost Revis millions of dollars in salaries and endorsements.

His uncle may be a strong voice for Revis and his advice may be colored by his success, getting all his lost money back in one year. His uncle may be mistakenly missing the number of years Revis is indentured to the Jets or not but…

Revis has to agree to take any advice. Someone may get bad advice but one does not have to listen to it. The only person to blame is Revis.

In fact, it is obvious his uncle is just trying to look out for Revis, and his agents are trying to prove they are the best in the world. If they get Revis moved while he has three years to go on his contract, they will be besieged by potential clients. The fact they may cost this kid millions or even his career is a reasonable price for THEM to pay.

      harlan

  70. avatar hornblower says:

At this point there is a whiff of desperation but oddly enough it’s not from the Jets. The agents told him the Jets would cave and he would be back by now. No 25 yr. old wants to sit out. He is a player. His friends and teammates are going to war and he is home.
If Cole has any source it’s the agents. Their future not Darrelle’s is on the line. They with the help of Mom and Uncle oversold him. I’m sure he is on the phone every ten minutes with them and his teammates.
When he realizes they have used him to advance their reputation he will come in. He is a pawn in this game. Too bad he seems like a nice kid.

  71. avatar MBI says:

Revis was my favorite player, loved the way he went about his business. Until thise year you really didn’t hear anything about him, but I think we all knew how good he was. Up until recently I didn’t really blame him for the hold out, since I feel like contracts in the NFL are always up for renegotiation in either direction (see Ghloston and Clemmens). But the longer it goes the longer it seems like the Jets have the leverage (he has 3 years remaining on his deal and they dont have to do a damn thing if they dont want to) and its making Revis seem selfish and irrational, like even though he knows they are probably fair offers he doesn’t care and will stomp his feet until he gets what he wants. Revis is really hurting his rep with this one, I think he is a good guy getting bad advice.

  72. avatar Will says:

I have no problem with him never playing again for the Jets as long as the Jets dont trade him. Let him sit for 3 years getting fined everyday.

  73. avatar karl hungus says:

He coulda have been somebody, he coulda been a condender, instead of a bum……

I dont want the Jets to trade him, I want them to pull a Michael and say, “my offer is this….nothing….”

Not a thing until you get back on the field and start playing…..we will take out a insurance policy for injury, and not a thing will be negotiated until you get back on the field.

    Capish?

If he doesnt agree, then have fun, they hold his rights for 3+ years….his career will be pretty much over. Another one hit wonder asking himself what might have been….to have been the best player on a NY team that was fighting for championships…….the regret will last a lifetime….

  74. LOVE the Blog been following for years but never commented this is my first time.

I was supposed to go to New York with three friends (im from tampa) but one of them bailed on me and I recently bought three tickets to the New England @ New york jets and now i have a extra ticket.

I come say this because this is a great jet fan site and would totally be willing to sell the ticket for alot less than almost everyone is selling for the seat. Its section 134 (lower goal line seats) and i just really want to get my money back and note that I got it for a really good price so its not super expensive. Ive checked all the prices for the seats and it would be at least $100 cheaper then everyone else.
IF anyone has any questions email me at Cptvelez@gmail.com(this is not spam and I am being sincere)
    GO JETS!!!

  75. As a HUGE Darrelle Revis fan since his rookie year, I am really saddenned by all that has gone on. One of the reasons that I loved Darrelle so much was because he USED to be quiet and humble. That is why I had so much respect for the guy. I must tell you, I will never look at Darrelle the same after this, sadly I think these are his true colors. I really hope that Revis does put on a Jets uniform I really do, but not at the expense of the team and signing other players like Harris, Holmes/Edwards. Right now it’s not looking good and I doubt he’ll play against Baltimore. If Revis sits out this season and it becomes oobvious that Revis’ prescence or lack there of costed us this “great season” we were suppose to have I hope it backfires on him. Darrelle sits out the year and then there’s a lockout in 2011, that is 2 years in Revis’ prime gone out the window and all of a sudden he becomes the loser in all this. Again it’s sad that things have come to this but evenetually we have to move on

  76. avatar gt73 says:

Ridiculous article or not, you don’t play games with potentially the best defensive player in franchise history. Putting a chip on Revis’ shoulder now and causing him to want to leave the organization (I’m still pissed about losing John Riggins all those years ago) at any point before he is ready to retire would be absolutely inexcusable, and a PR blunder beyond all others. This man is your legacy player of the current era. If you sincerely hope to be THE football team of New York pay him and get on with the season, dammit. New York was ready to give Brett Favre the key to the city before he did a damn thing here. Revis should be given the key to the gotdam state.

  77. avatar moyvore says:

Under the NFL collective bargining agreement roster exemption provisions for players under contract are different than those that apply for restricted free agents.

    Revis is under contract.

Based on the language below, after a certain date (now past) it appears that a club can elect to keep a player on the roster exempt list and continue not pay him even after the player decides to report…for as long as the club likes (during a single season).

This provision requires that the player be given written notice of “such fact” upon reporting to the club.

I suppose this is designed to protect the club from having to pay players who aren’t in shape and don’t know new plays that might have been put in.

However, it also appears from the contract language that the player won’t know for sure that all the work he would be putting to get into game shape would result in being placed on the active roster.

If a player on a roster-exempt list report late in the year with the expectation of getting credit for an accrued season by being on the active roster for six games, there’s no assurance that would actually happen.

“Q. What constitutes an “accrued season?”

    A. Six or more regular-season games on a club’s active/inactive, reserved-injured or “physically unable to perform” lists” (NFL.com)

Revis will almost certainly be placed on the roster exempt list by the time that final cuts are made.

    It’s a no-brainer.

    NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement

    Article XXXII, Other Provisions

    Section 4. Roster Exemption:

    (b) Players Under Contract. If a Club obtains a roster exemption for a player under contract who does not report to his Club until after the first
roster reduction, the player will not be entitled to pre-season or regular season compensation until such exemption is removed, provided the player is
given written notice of such fact upon reporting to the Club. If such notice is not given to the player, the player must be paid his salary during his exemption

  78. We can say Revis is the loser in this all we want, but the truth of the matter is, he’s still going to be sitting pretty. Professional athletes are some of the most overpaid people in America. Sure, his reputation will be tarnished, if he doesn’t play for 2 or 3 years, but he may not even care. This is a vacation. The Jets need Revis. History won’t be kind to the Jets, if they don’t find a way to get him back on the team soon. People won’t remember that Revis held the 2010 Jets hostage. They will remember that the 2010 Jets didn’t pay the man and as a result, didn’t live up to expectations.

    • avatar eboozer says:

Must disagree. if they pay Revis what he wants the salary cap will prevent them from paying Holmes, Harris, Edwards and others. there must be a structure and if he can’t fit in then he must be left out

    • avatar George says:

Couldn’t disagree more, no player is bigger than the team.. No player, besides maybe a QB is worth that much.. MEvis makes me sick,he is the loser..No matter what u say, if the Jets pay him what he wants, there at fault.. U pay this guy that much, what about all the guys we have to sign next year? MEvis, being the so called “Team Player”, Should know that.. He doesn’t care about the team at all, he is not the player I thought he was..

    • avatar Brandon says:

If a professional to misses a season it does have an impact on their performance. It takes a while to relearn and get into proper shape. Even if they stay in shape, it does have an impact to be away from the game for a year. That doesnt mean the professional wont still be ok, but they are probably not in top form for a number of weeks.

      >>is a vacation.

Somehow, I don’t think Revis will view it as such, or be enjoying it as much. And he still has to stay in shape if he wanst to get a big contract.

      >>The Jets need Revis.

Of course they do. But they need to run the team as a whole also.

      >> History won’t be kind to the Jets, if they don’t find a way to get him back on the team soon. People won’t remember that Revis held the 2010 Jets hostage. They will remember that the 2010 Jets didn’t pay the man and as a result, didn’t live up to expectations.

Who cares what history thinks? Seriously. The only one who has a say is Woody Johnson, who wants to win a Super Bowl. And the Jets are not there until Sanchez becomes a good QB.

In addition, losing Revis hurts, but if Comartie and Wilson play OK, the drop off may not be that huge. It will still cost a game over the season, but nothing like 3 losses. Now is Cromartie or Wilson gets hurt, thats another story.

“History” will remember that the Jets were wise and didn’t cave in to unreasonable demands.

PS – will this hold out cost Revis any endorsement money? Not with me. I certainly wont think well of him pushing a product.

    • avatar JetsFan65 says:

No offense but what are you smoking?

How would Revis be sitting pretty by sitting out 2-3 years. I’m not 100% sure but i believe that he loses all his money that is left on his contract not to mention all the $ that he’s getting fined which is over 500,000 already. Doesn’t get to play the sport that he loves and will most likely never return to form when he’s actually allowed to leave the team. No way he gets a big contract then so he loses out on $ and career goes down the drain!

  79. avatar BTEXP says:

We just have to remember that he is under contract. There is too much to loose for Revis. Rather than have him sit, trade him for two #1′s. You will always need first round talent.

  80. avatar Tony says:

Let him ROT for 3 years. Let’s see how good you’ll be when you’ve been out of the NFL for 3 years MEVIS!!!

  81. avatar Joe B. says:

This is ridiculous. Cole is obviously planting a story fed to him word-for-word by Revis’ agents. Really bothers me when guys write propaganda stories rather than straight journalistic ones. Then the drastic tone of the ‘article’ gets a ton of attention when it’s really just the agents (again) trying to scare the Jets into spending way more money than they can afford to.

I’m sick to death of this whole thing. Let him sit. We’ll be fine. Enjoy being absent for an entire year in the middle of your prime when you’re finally starting to get endorsements, moron.

  82. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Hey I dont always agree with everything Darrelle did during this ordeal but the idea “Let him sit, we’ll be fine” is outright DELUSION…and not for nothing but Darrelle never acted like a jackass eating McDonalds at Hofstra like Antonio ” I got traded cuz I dont hit anyone” Cromartie did…Relle was as outstanding in run support as he was in coverage, which I cant see how Cromartie could ever duplicate unless he got a testicular implant. I said from jump street on that trade I loved Cro as our #2, not as our #1. At this point our depth in the secondary is putrid. Lowery, Coleman or Cole couldn’t cover most teams #4 WR

Im not arguing to pay or not pay him anymore, Ive beaten that horse to death, shot it, stabbed it, ran over it with my Yukon, then came back and took a dump on its chest…

All Im saying is if you are going to move on, like Tanny said in Hard Knocks 1, trade for another CORNER, cause they are not a Super Bowl team with no pure pass rusher, no ball hawking safety/Ed Reed clone and no Darelle Revis-take your #1WR off the field completely-DB…

Sorry guys…its the truth…you can tar and feather me if Im wrong but its just the way I feel

    • avatar njdpelc says:

I’ve been seeing cromartie hit people all preseason. I think he’ll hold up just fine. Granted i want revis back but we’ll still be a top defense with or without revis. But def better with him.

And with 8 kids i think cromartie needs his testicles removed not more added. Haha

      • avatar Brandon says:

        Me too!
Comartie seems like an OK physical CB.
I saw him make an open field tackle of a running back against Washington.
I think the Jets worked with him, and he is more physical.

        >>At this point our depth in the secondary is putrid. Lowery, Coleman or Cole couldn’t cover most teams #4 WR

Lowerey is our starting Nickle back. :-/

  83. avatar greene says:

can we trade the dude for Aso yet???? Aso is one mean man-cover corner. I would LOVE to have Aso on this team.

    • avatar JetsFan65 says:

I wouldn’t have a problem with that. Revis goes to a non-contender and we get an equal replacement in return.

But we would also have to get something else in return besides aso like a 1st or 2nd round pick for the fact that Aso’s contract expires this year and Revis will have 2 yrs left after this one. Al Davis is dumb enough to make such a move and Revis will get his monster contract which is all he’s worried about instead of winning as well.

And then depending on how the season plays out, we decide who to keep next year and for how much with all our expiring contracts. Ex. Aso(if acquired), Harris, Cro, Holmes, Edwards, Ellis.

    • avatar Eddie DiGio says:

How are the Jets going to pick Aso’s 16 million when they wont even pay Revis the 16 million and he is BETTER than Aso…Nice try

      • avatar JetsFan65 says:

Because if the Jets were to acquire Aso for this year, that’s 16 mil for only this year in an uncapped year not for the next 10 years the way Revis wants.

And i can guarantee you that Aso and getting that much $ again on his next contract..

  84. avatar neauone says:

Let him sit for 3 years without pay as he is under contract. Now if someone wants to give us 3 number 1′s for him fine. Let the malcontent go. period.

This is obviously a propaganda piece from Revis’ agents. I hope management just decides to move on.
Let Revis sit if that’s what he wants. I might have a different view, if he was a free-agent, but he’s already pocketed a lot of money. He was the one that signed off on his contract’s salary structure.
Let him sit. To Woody & Steve… don’t fold!

Schwartz and Feinsod are the true problem here. If Darrelle had a real agent, this would get resolved.

Look at their history – they don’t know how to negotiate.

      • avatar AA Brooklyn says:

I don’t know if the problem is negotiating as much as it is knowing when to compromise and doing what is best for your client (which may not always be staying the course until getting the maximum payday). I find it interesting that in the NFL where on the field rules are clear and that players teams coaches and ownership are all held to some standards and accountability that the agents have none and basically operate in a vacuum.

My opinion on the situation is as follows. Revis signed the deal, he is morally obligated to fulfill hid current contract. Say I paid you $50 bucks to pick me up at the airport and you said yes. Then, Bent offers you $75 for the same job and you pick him up and leave my butt stranded.

You’re a jerk, with no principles. In this situation, Revis is Bent.

This team will win without Revis. If Revis is not there for the opening game, relationships begin to deteriorate. I say screw Revis. But don’t trade him. Let him rot till his contract expires.

    • avatar NamVetJet says:

      Don’t pick on Bent.

    • I’m not siding with Revis, because I think he’s gone about this in a completely classless way, but the whole “he signed a contract, he’s morally bound to obligate it” argument really doesn’t hold true for NFL contracts. An NFL contract can barely be considered a true contract because the owners are free not to honor their side of the bargain. If Revis underperforms or gets hurt, the Jets are completely within their rights to let him go and not pay him. It’s hard to make a blanket statement that the players are morally bound to honor the contract when the same doesn’t hold true for the owners. However, as I said, I don’t think he’s gone about this the right way, and I’m really getting sick of him and his agents.

  89. avatar william says:

Hey Jet fans. What happened in the game against the Colts? Revis can only cover one guy at a time. You need to be able to pass rush with only 4 guys. A legitimate pass rusher is worth more that a CB. Even the Mannings and Bradys of the world have bad days when they are being hurried. I have seen the Jets blitz 6 or 7 guys and not get to the QB (see AFC title game). You need to get pass rushers.

    • avatar JetsFan65 says:

That’s true, we do need pass rushers which should be addressed in next year’s draft.

But that’s why they picked up Cromartie and Wilson to go along with Revis so that they can have great coverage vs Colts as opposed to last year. Better coverage equals more sacks or at least less TD’s.

  92. avatar charlie says:

good idea neauone. lets trade him for ASO and a #2 draft pick from the raiders and let the raiders over pay a player AGAIN.

  93. avatar MylesT says:

So mad right now. This needs to end. I just want to enjoy the regular season. This is bull**** Both sides needs to meet in the middle.

Pay David Harris! He is showing up and deserves it.

  94. avatar Ducky says:

I get that these people have to write thier articles, but the analysis in this article is faulty. The idea that Manning’s contract will bring up every other “top” player’s does not follow. What Cole ignores, is the fact that Aso will eventually get a new contract which is very unlikely to be at the same level he is at now. The market for corners is going to get reset at that level, not what QB’s are making. If Revis holds out for the whole year, his leverage is going to dissipate, not increase. By Cole’s logic, once Manning re-signs every position salary is going to increase. We know this is not true.

  95. avatar tyrone says:

if you could get 2 1st rounders or, 123 and a decent player .I would trade him., colts and saints had no shut down corners last year and the two teams with shut down corners did not go to the super bowl. and just in case sanchez does not live up .we could have some good picks in the draft for later. and also get a pass rusher.the jets got a
super bowl team right know without revis if wilson could hold up we know what cromartie could do.I believe in sanchez but any good qb with this offense will light up the score board.

    • avatar Eddie DiGio says:

      yea tyrone
but the Colts have TWO DEMON sack artists and the Saints go 4 deep in terms of CBs who can start in the league…both of which the Jets do not have

Plus, those two teams can come back from any deficit because they have two of the top 3 QBs in the NFL…another luxury the Jets do not have…

sorry…this team aint as good as you people think it is

  96. avatar tyrone says:

poole/cromarte/wilson/is better then lowery/rhodes/revis.plus jenkins and JT in the front and the ghost making some noise we could be better then last year, and sign everybody.

      • avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Yea what happens when you face Indy, New England, Green Bay, Minnesota (Rice healthy), New Orleans or Baltimore who go THREE starting caliber WRs deep…

Ill tell you, Peyton finds who Lowery is covering and shreads you for 30 pts and you GO HOME…those trades were built with Revis IN MIND and on this team, leading that secondary…anything Rex or the Jets say is complete and utter put up a strong front so they cant say we mailed it in

  97. avatar tyrone says:

but yes revis will make us super better.but hey the guy dont want to be a jet he wants to be a jerk

revis is asking for 10 years 160 million i would offer him 140 million and if he doesnt want that he can sit out the whole year and next year because there wont be football and see what contract offer he gets. no one will give a player who hasnt played for 2 years bover 100 million

  100. avatar Snakeman says:

I defer judgment until Bent weighs in.

    • avatar Bent says:

He might prove to be correct, but this article is baseless speculation, with several logical flaws, as pointed out by everyone else.

  101. I look at this and say “Okay, then he can’t play football”
The NYJ own him for 3 years. Period.

  102. avatar tos98987 says:

they need to tell him thats fine you can hold out till 2013 when you a free agent amd find another team .

Whos going to want a guy who will then be almost 30 , removed from the game for three years .

You guys think he will do that . I dont really see how he has the leverage .

  103. ” Shame on you STEINY for referencing that crappy article which lacks any valid points, research or informative value. I commented on this article in a different thread many hours ago but didn’t want to give a link or name or author, cause i don’t promote mediocrity.

Bravo STEINY for making this thread. Good job on using speculative, emotionally ridden article whose main point is to generate emotional responses. ”

Duality of life, nothing makes sense when taking as a whole. It is all about making it make sense to you.

“Is there are hidden message in my comment that has a more direct relation to the contract in question?” – you might ask. <- (wishfull thinking on my part) Yes, but apparently others are still not tired of repeating same talking points over and over and over. Beats the hell out of reading between the lines.

  104. avatar tos98987 says:

Also how are all these guys getting record contracts and they are going to lower the cap, thats BS .

The owners and the players are going to be on the same page with that . IMO

  105. avatar klecko71 says:

    this is a joke already

and an embarrassment to this team

agree that the “he signed a contract” arguement is beyond weak b/c of the way the nfl works, as mark schlereth constantly says on espn nfl live, nfl contracts are written on toilet paper..

BUT the big key here is that a**hole, i mean revis…has finished year 3 of a 6 year deal, that that a**hole held out for back when he was drafted. That a**hole held out for the 6th year.

That a**holes agents werent smart enough to figure out that that his leverage would take longer to gain the longer the deal went.

the jets came to them after the season ended and agreed he needed a new deal. the fact that its not done is both sides fault, but in the end revis has done something unfathomable:

    THE FANS HATE HIM NOW.

unreal…the teams best player in YEARS is now hated by most. (I use this site as my barometer)

his agents suck, they are the same agents for vincent jackson…who has more leverage b/c he is on the last year of his deal… and they still cant get that deal done.

wake up girls…you and your clients are in the middle of the country being in the sh***er…. figure out a nice amount of freaking millions to get your client….make SMART deals that in 2-3 years can also be re-worked if your clients out perform them somehow….

with revis, these 2 morons clearly messed up holding out for a 6th year…almost as stupid as the ricky williams contract he first signed.

hold out….we own you for 3 years….sit out all 3….good luck making any kind of “real money” as you idiots call it after sitting out 3 years.

football is a team sport….. good luck watching the TEAM dominate without you.

love your talent, hate your attitude and feel sorry that you are allowing those 2 morons to run your life….in the prime of your career no less…

nice work…. good luck with that.

maybe you can hire rusty harden as your lawyer to fight for your freedom next…

  106. avatar MK says:

I saw on SNY some guys talking about if Revis will be back for Game 1. One said he would the other said he wouldn’t. One said that he would “Root that the Jets get lit up like a Christmas Tree and get blown out”. The other looked shocked and said “Do you really think that he would be rooting for HIS team to lose?”

All I can say about this is this. If he doesn’t come back and the Jets lose the first 2-3 games, the fans will HATE…HATE him. If fans get the sense that Revis was glad that the Jets lost games when he wasn’t there because that proves his worth to the team, the Jets fans will shift the blame from the FO to him.

Jets fans like me have waited way way to freaking long for a season where we have a shot. To know that Revis could be rooting against his teammates because he wants to make $3 million more instead of $2 million more and the Jets are losing because of this, the Fans will ABSOLUTELY HATE HIM.

God forbid this happens and his comes back in Week 4 or 5 with the Jets winless, the fans will boo him for the rest of his time as a Jet.

I’m saying this to him at this moment. Jets fans like you but they want to win. Right now I’m angry at the front office for not signing you, but if we lose because of this and you WATCH this happen and actually are happy with it, then you are a ghost to Jets fans. You will have stabbed us in the back and we will never forgive you. So if that happens, then please do stay away…for your own sake.

  107. Revis Era? He was awesome for 1 year and pretty good in another.

      • avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Ummmmmmmmm…he was here for 3 years…made the Pro Bowl his second year…was the best at his position by his 3rd full year…you know the last guy who did that as a defensive player in NY??? Yea his name was Lawrence Taylor…

Your argument would work if he was here for 10 years but is not really great here.l..and if he actually does suit up for us this season, he’ll have another year of “awesomeness”

Say what you want about him off the field, but he was the MVP of the team last year and was completely irreplacable…just ask Rex Ryan

  108. avatar DHarvey says:

Let him sit for 3 years under whatever is the minimum as set in the contract minus any applicable penalties. Nuff said. Can we move on now?

  109. avatar chris says:

anyone see the interviews with harris and mangold last night during the game when the reporter asked why they didnt hold out of camp? they both pretty much said the same thing.. something along the lines of i wanted to be here for my teammates and the thought didnt cross my mind…

theres 2 players that are all for the team and not for themselves….play for the name on the front of the jersey, not the back…

  110. avatar klecko71 says:

amen chris…. revis getting bad advice thats for sure

  111. avatar Chris J says:

Trade him to the Rams for their number one pick next year and a pass rusher

  112. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

trade him to the rams for #1 and #2 next year…rookie wage scale will be in the works by then. He will get lost there like ASO in Oakland.

Or trade him to Oakland for ASO and their 2nd rounder next year..ASO would be just as good in this D.

Or trade him to Jax for a CB and their #1 next year..

    • avatar JetsFan65 says:

Why would we trade revis to rams for only a 1st and a 2nd rounder, nothing less than two #1′s and probably more than that!

Now the deal for Aso and #2 i said already i would do.

  113. avatar walter says:

i hope the jets stand their ground on this one because i really dont think he is worth what he wants.yes he is a great player but not that great for what he wants.let him sit we will be fine.i just think that he is greedy and doesnt care about the team OR us fans.

  114. avatar Andy says:

Revis boy how such a winner can become such a loser. You have taken such bad advice. Who anyway is giving you advice? Did they ever negotiate anything? Are you serious you cant live on anything less then 16 million a year? 12 million a year is not enough for you? I bleed green and hoped it would never come to this, now I hope you are forced to stick to the contract you signed as a rookie. In other words I hope you rot like a piece of fruit for the next two or three seasons. The team tried to make it right and through the advice from others who know nothing you have turned it into a huge distraction for the team. I hope your advisors are happy. I am a J E T S fan NOT a Revis fan. Its a team sport and your actions have hurt the team. What would Parcels have done with you. Hope you are happy now!

  115. avatar Moto says:

Sadly, I don’t think Revis ever wanted to be a Jet for life. Look up the negotiations on his rookie contract. I say let him sit for 3 years and think about it. He is getting bad advice from his agent, uncle and whomever… he is leaving a lot of money on the table in a bad economy. Great player for sure, but not too smart.

  116. avatar jetsjerk says:

    Revis ShhhhhMEvis!

  117. avatar klecko71 says:

just read up on the rookie deal revis signed…. didnt realize it was the team who insisted on the 6th year…. revis wanted 5…

interesting…we won the battle then but losing the war now….

BUT…cant ignore a guy like mangold in his last season of his rookie deal showing up, doing the right thing…and getting rewarded…

  118. I’m tired of waiting on news of Revis. I’m ready to focus on the Raven game and on the players currently on the Jet team. I wonder what Revis would think if the Jets were to win the Super bowl???
