Woodhead a Lock to Make the Team

by Steiny on September 3rd, 2010 at 10:31 am

I really am glad Woodhead is making the team.  He is a great kid with a big heart…how can you not root for the guy?
He clearly has faced many people who have doubted him in his life due to his size, and now finally he has the last laugh.
Congrats again Danny, you deserved it…

A better 3rd RB than McKnight right now. He should be active every week unless McKinght finds some guts and plays like a Jet.

  2. avatar ramble914 says:

A nice story, and I’m happy for him, but I really don’t believe he is an NFL caliber player.

    • avatar Todd says:

No way…Woodhead has done nothing but do what he has been asked. Even if most of his touches come in garbage time. I say throw this guy out there against the first teamers and he would still pick up 4 yards a pop with the potential for the occasional 15-20 yard play. He’s wirey.

  3. avatar Led says:

I’d rather have Washington. I don’t trust Woodhead on specials after the Miami debacle (I know he was miscast as the edge setter, but stil) and I don’t think he can be effective against real NFL defenses. Washington has decent speed, a little wiggle and can pound it. Plus I like him better covering kicks than Woodhead. I know Woodhead is a sentimental favorite (deceptive speed, gritty fan favorite, plays the game the right way, all the undersized white guy cliches…), but Washington is a better player.

  4. avatar Jim says:

I’m happy for Danny. He’s a great story and by all accounts a great guy. This worries me a little though. Does Woodhead making the roster mean that Chauncey Washington will be cut? With McKnight likely deactivated on game days, we need a 3rd RB who can actually play RB and handle the load should LT2 or Greene go down with an injury. I love Woodhead but I just don’t see him as a guy you can put in the backfield on a consistant basis in the regular season. Chauncey has shown he can take the punishment and dish some out as well. I really hope he makes this team.

  5. avatar bob says:

been on the team 3yrs gaining experience accepted by the players.i do believe he has a uppside..the best of danny woodhead is yet to come…Mcnight is another Demarkus Russell his hart and head really not about football……

  6. avatar Dan L. says:

I love Woodhead. I was hoping the Jets would cut him so my Texans would have a shot at him to make him a slot receiver. Why don’t the Jets try him there? I bet he’d get some scary YAC.

  7. avatar neauone says:

I think as fan’s we lose the insight of watching a player like Woodhead day in and day out. Based on what we see in preseason we make our assessments about one player or another. Clearly Woodhead plays football, the kind of football that makes coaches notice him. He plays and he stays period.

  8. avatar Woodhead fan says:

All you Woodhead haters can just take notice that Rex himself SAYS to take notice! Come on people! Obviously the Jets want him there! Just deal with it and move on! He is a Good player…case closed!

    • avatar Brendan says:

Um…case is not closed. He actually has to, you know, play well when it matters.

      • avatar Woodhead fan says:

And when has he gotten a REAL shot?? Getting 10 touches in a season isn’t enough evidence to dismiss the kid! He is there for a reason. Don’t argue with me…argue with the coaches getting paid millions of dollars to make these decisions!

        • avatar Jim says:

So you’re confident that if Greene and/or LT go down that Woodhead can step in and take a bulk of the carries? Please. Take you fan lenses off for a second and think about what your saying. The coaches are keeping him on the team because he works hard and he’s a nice kid. They don’t actually expect to play him in any game that matters.

        • avatar Brendan says:

And he hasn’t gotten playing time for a reason. He’s simply not good. He is small, but he’s not a shifty runner like Sproles, or a battering ram like Jones-Drew. He’s not effective.

          • avatar deuce4417 says:

            brendan,

you are most certainly intitled to your own opinion but i’m wondering…. again just a question but what will it take for you to agree that woodhead is of value? 500yrds rushing, 200 recieving?

          • avatar Brendan says:

Um…well, I honestly hope that whoever the 3rd RB is doesn’t get much playing time. That means Greene/LT are both healthy and doing well.

But I would like to see Woodhead average close to 5 yards per carry. And maybe some catches out of the backfield. But I’m more interested to see what his contribution on STs are (which is my main reason for not wanting him). STs cost the Jets a few games last year, and Woodhead was directly involved in one of those STs collapses (Miami game).

          • avatar Brendan says:

I know, I just didn’t see him do anything during preseason on them. He recovered a fumble, so he’s aware and smart (two things I have admitted before), but aside from running in his lane and breaking off at the right time, I haven’t seen anything.

          • avatar bigtkyle says:

What has washington done on special teams besides make one big hit. C’mon woodhead proved last year he can make catches out of the backfield when his number is called upon. There are only a certain number of plays he can actually be in there for when you have green, t.jones and leon washington ahead of you. And if you want to go on just preseason which you are doing for c washington, he hasn’t even come close to having a game woodhead had in the final preseason game last year. Im not saying cut washington i hope he stays, but woodhead is def ahead of him.

  9. avatar NamVetJet says:

    Not over Washington.

  10. avatar deuce4417 says:

its finny cause all the peple that say he goes down too easy and the same people that say he can’t play reciever, well, wouldn’t that make sense to move him there to get seperation from defenders?

  11. avatar Mr Blint says:

Good grief – Woodhead has earned his spot and if he wasn’t an NFL caliber player he wouldn’t have had the highest yards per catch of all Jets running backs last year, His speed is not deceptive – in his rookie year he ran the 40-yard dash in a time of 4.33 to 4.38 seconds which would have been the second-fastest among all running backs at the NFL Combine in March 2008. He posted the best pro-agility time of 4.03 seconds, the second-best vertical jump (38½ inches) and the best 60-yard shuttle time (11.2 seconds)
He has SKILLS…and he improves at whatever task or role they give him. Utility men are always valuable to a team and he is a good one.

    • avatar Brendan says:

So…he did good at measurables, except for the ones that are most important to this conversation (his size). Great.

He had the highest ypc out of Jets RBs? Since he played WR maybe he is better than I thought, registering stats for two positions at once is a neat trick.

    • avatar Jim says:

He had 8 catches last year. You can’t make an argument on a sample size that small. And as we as Jet fans have clearly seen over the years, combine measurables don’t really mean much. Great, Woodhead runs fast in his underwear. Glad we know that.

  12. avatar Dylan says:

Honestly, I think McKnight paved the way for Woodhead to make the team. The Jets want to have another back that can lineup in the slot and can catch the ball a bit out of the backfield. Woodhead can not run between the tackles, but he has good hands and is fast. I hope he has improved on STs though.

  13. avatar Ryan M says:

Brendan…um….um…woodhead is on this team for a reason…um…um… Rex is a hell of a coach and has done great things with players that everyone thought was too small or not just good enough…um…um… So I put my trust in rex, if he sees something, then the man can play…um…um

    • avatar Brendan says:

      Are you stuttering?

The fact is that Woodhead does nothing well, just does a lot of things. He’s not a good RB, he’s an underdeveloped WR, and has shown nothing to me on STs. The team likes him because the team rallies around him or whatever, but his impact will be minimal, if there is one at all.

  14. avatar Dylan says:

    Players cut so far:
    Cook
    Satele
    Davis
    Taylor
    Knicky
    Fitzhugh
    Felix
    Mauga (almost definitely)
    Warren (almost definitely)

So far my prediction is good. I’m a little nervous about picking Jackson to make the roster, and leaving Washington off the roster though.

  15. avatar TheRealRK says:

I just hope its not at the expence of C. Washington. I think he provides a lot more to the team than Woodhead does.

  16. avatar deuce4417 says:

lets not forget we have one guy on our team thyat everyone said was too small..IE jim leonard. so your all saying you don’t want jimmy either because he is too small? lets try to be a little consistant

    • avatar Brendan says:

Leonhard is even more physically gifted than Woodhead (he won Wisconsin’s slam dunk contest multiple times over actual NCAA basketball players). He’s also in a different position where his size isn’t as big of a concern (secondary players have always been the smallest group on the field).

  17. avatar Tim says:

Honestly, I can’t believe people are still questioning Woodhead. You don’t give up a spot in a final roster to a kid who can’t contribute. He was a third down running back in the playoffs last year and did a good job with blitz pickup. He doesn’t lose the football, he runs hard and he is clearly fast, even if it is deceptively so.

  18. avatar jvsvn says:

I think Dylan is right. It’s hard to see Woodhead making the team if McKnight didn’t implode. The Jets clearly wanted an all purpose back type on the roster and McKnight proved he just can’t be trusted in that role. Woodhead was the next guy up. Take nothing away from Woodhead. The guy is a tiny, UDFA from Chadron State and three years later look where he is. He deserves all the credit in the world. But when the Jets traded up in the draft for McKnight I guarantee you that they didn’t expect he would get outplayed by Woodhead (and everyone else).

  19. avatar Dylan says:

I wonder if they will have him returning punts if Revis still isn’t signed. You can’t have your starting CB on punt returns, and I don’t think they want to put Leonhard or Cotchery back there anymore. There is also no way McKnight is returning punts while he can’t hold onto the ball.

  20. avatar Ryan M says:

    No, wasn’t studdering, just seeing figured I’d um… Between every comment…um…like u

  21. for all the woodhead lovers out there, where exactly do you expect him to contribute this year? how often do you expect him to get the ball on offense with all the weapons we have? he doesnt return kickoffs or punts and he is a potential liability in coverage, right? heck, even fumbles mcknight would be a bigger contributer than woodhead on specials if he returned punts and kickoffs.

hes a good story, but a wasted roster spot imo.

  22. I don’t mind Woodhead making the team, as long as Chauncey Washington also makes the team. I do think Woodhead has the talent and can be a contributer to the offense if given the opportunity, but obviously he’s not going to have many opportunities because we have LT and Greene. Woodhead is going to have to make a name for himself on special teams this year. You saw what happened in the Miami game last year when Ted Ginn returned the 2 kickoffs back, Woodhead took a lot of heat on those plays. He’s going to have top improve on Special Teams. I’m glad Woodhead is making the team and hopefully Chauncey will as well because he had an outstanding pre-season. As for McKnight I don’t even know if he’s going to turn into a solid RB at the NFL level. He looked God awful this pre-season, he had that nice punt return in Carolina and NOTHING else. But we just can’t cut the kid because we wasted a 4th round pick and Leon on him

  23. avatar Ryan M says:

Um…I expect him to help up lead the league in f###king wins anyway he can

  24. avatar jvsvn says:

I think all the contributor talk about Woodhead kind of misses the point. It’s a long season. You need a couple a guys who can go out and take some carries or catch a few passes without making any major mistakes so that the guys who are the real contributors can get a blow from time to time. It’s sort of like having an extra pitcher to eat some innings during a long season. We don’t see what Woodhead does in practice. My guess is that he is extremely consistent, doesn’t fumble, doesn’t drop easy passes, and basically plays high effort, mistake free football. The exact type of player that you can trust with 2 or 3 touches a game without making any major mistakes. In a long hard season, that is contributing.

  25. Before camp I would never have imagined that Woodhead would make the team but the bottom line is that the people who see him the most and get paid to make these decisions obviously think he can contribute. The implication I’ve seen a few times in this thread that he made the team as something of a mascot is kind of ridiculous.

  26. I really don’t get the Woodhead lovers OR the Woodhead haters at all. The guy is a bubble player, he’s not going to be great, you’re crazy if you think he’s going to be great. That being said, if he contributes a little (see his drive extending catch against TB last year) he is well worth being the 52nd or 53rd guy on the team. I know all about his ST gaff last year, but Westy has already admitted he used in him the wrong spot. There were also a lot of other guys who were higher on the team’s over all depth chart who had bad plays last year.

The funniest thing of all to me is when someone posts “he’s not big enough to play in this league”. Just nuts. Ever hear of a guy named Chrebet??? I’m not saying woodhead will ever contribute 1/1000th as much as chrebet did, but that’s not the point. They are roughly the same size and there have been others that size who have played at this level as well. If a guy comes out who is 5’4″ and 175lbs and earns a spot, then that will be big enough.

Clearly the woodhead lovers love him because he is a little guy and a major underdog. I think the woodhead haters hate him simply because so many people love him. I repeat, he is a perennial bubble player, so why does anyone care that much one way or the other?

  27. avatar DHarvey says:

    To all Woodhead Doubters…BBWWAHAAAHAAAA

  28. I’m glad he made the team, but as Bent said earlier, the reason he made the team is mostly STs. His versatility to step in to multiple roles plays into that, but I imagine that the coaching staff’s vision of his role, is mostly to be a distraction to opposing defenses.

Throw him out there in an odd situation/spot on the field, and grab the attention of the defense, maybe force a time out bc of the confusion.

His size doesn’t just work against him, other teams will look at him, if he’s on the field and not want to be the team that is made to look bad by the small RB.

Perhaps his size and sporadic appearances will work to the teams advantage bc of the looming homerun possibility. Just get in the other team’s head, you know?
