Active Roster is Done, But It’s Not Over

by Lisa Zimmerman on September 4th, 2010 at 10:07 pm

NEW YORK–Well, the cuts are in. Nothing unexpected. The Darrelle Revis holdout and the Santonio Holmes suspension, not to mention the injury to Calvin Pace added a bit of stress that the Jets certainly didn’t want to deal with.

We had a conference call with Mike Tannenbaum – Rex Ryan was inexplicably unavailable. I actually asked Tannenbaum on that call what sort of impact the unknown situation with Revis had on them in the decision making. He responded, “We’ve talked about that quite a bit. We feel good about our depth at corner and that’s the group we’re going to be moving forward with.”When asked about the current status with Revis, Tannenbaum said, “We have a confidentiality agreement and I’m going to honor that.”

Keeping Chauncey Washington means that the team has five running backs, although Danny Woodhead does serve as a “swing guy.” According to Tannenbaum, “Chauncey’s a physical guy…He’s remained productive in the kicking game.” Washington is certainly one of those guys whose status is tenuous based on what else may or may not happen in the next few weeks.

A source told me yesterday that Brian Jackson would not make the active roster, but that they wanted to get him for the practice squad. As you’ve seen, he made the active roster after all (yes, I’ll be speaking to that source…), but my hunch is that when and if Revis returns, Jackson would be the first guy to go, depending on what his production looks like between now and then. I don’t know that even this team would keep more than 10 defensive backs.

As for Joe McKnight making the team, Tannenbaum echoed what Ryan has been saying, that the rookie has been very disappointing. “With Joe, he was a little more inconsistent than we had hoped in the preseason, but he’s going to get an opportunity to be on the roster.”

He then added, “As we’ve done in the past, our 45-man roster is going to look different week in and week out and there are going to be a number of spots that are going to be up for grabs in practice.”

The unspoken message there: David Clowney, we’re watching you.

I was convinced they were not going to keep Clowney and I still think he’s not anywhere close to being on solid ground. If he doesn’t perform, Holmes’ return won’t bode well for him.

Of course, they’re not done yet. They will be putting in claims on guys who are on waivers. That closes at noon on Sunday so we will see what the practice squad looks like at that point. There are a few guys who were cut today who will be signed there and you still may see some changes to the active roster as well.

Tannenbaum’s best line of the day: “We’re about 2,000 to 3,000 calories away from finalizing this roster. I’m very optimistic that’s on the low end of what the number is. It’s amazing the number of pretzel M&Ms that have been shipped here by Mars Candy.”

  1. Who thinks we sign Jarvis Green?

  2. We should have done whatever necessary to get Revis playing again. For the record, I’m not happy with our secondary without him.

  3. avatar Matt3222 says:

Hopefully revis will stop thinking $120 million is a “slap in the face”. What a punk

  4. GL as I said in an earlier post, He’s going to get his chance returning punts.Don’t give up on this kid. I think Rex is playing a game with him in order to motivate him,ala Golston.Rookies need time to mature, especially in the Big Apple.

  5. avatar Jscott says:

PLZ PLZ PICK UP TROY SMITH……..thats a great 3rd 4th string QB for us…hes way better than Brunell and Clemins…WAY BETTER…he just never got a shot sitting behind the baltimore QBs…..

  6. avatar Jetfan4life says:

The Jets will sign Revis this week. They want a positive vibe when they open the new stadium. Woody will open the checkbook…just a hunch

  7. avatar jlad51 says:

Pick up Troy Smith for at least the MNF game for info…

  8. avatar Tim says:

Hmm… Rex Ryan mysteriously didn’t show up… Secret rendezvous with Revis to make him sign?

  9. avatar AJ says:

    Please sign Revis! :[

  10. avatar G says:

TJ Housh was cut. Being that we were making trade offers I’m sure we’re kicking the tires there.

  11. avatar Dont Be A Frontrunner says:

    F you revis F you

  12. avatar tomg says:

I can’t believe people on this blog still think the Jets will sign revis before the start of the season. People on this blog need to move on and forget Revis, he will hold out the entire season. Lets move on, enough of Revis.

  13. avatar Tonks says:

Jackson should not be cut… he looked really good in coverage.

Coleman should be the guy to cut over jackson

  14. even if revis shows up sometime before the game against the ravens, how much of an impact can he really have? he hasnt practiced or anything since minicamp. i’m sure he has been keeping in shape and is well conditioned, but can we honestly expect him to show up and be an elite player right away? i dont see it happening.

    • avatar Dylan says:

Revis could sign his contract 30 seconds before the game, and would still be WAY better than any other CB on the team. He is a special talent, and like you said, I’m sure he is keeping in shape. I don’t think anyone is a fan of how he has handled this situation, but he does have an incredible work ethic, and I’m sure he has already studied the Ravens receivers. That guy puts in a ton of work during the offseason.

  15. avatar Jim says:

At this point, Mcknight can not be trusted to return punts or even handle the morning eggs. period

  16. Secret meeting btwn Rex and Revis @ a undisclosed all you can eat buffet. Rex places a full plate of food in front of Revis “you can’t take all the food all at once cause ur going to get full before ur done” then places another less full plate in front of Revis “you take some just enough where you’ll then have room to eat even more after” Rex then eats finishes all the food from both plates. Revis is now confused and says to Rex “I don’t get it?” reply by Rex “You’re being greedy! And I just wanted an excuse to eat everything just now! Man up and sign for less before I break you like a crab leg!”

  17. Hate when people say non guarenteed money “is not real money”, if that was the case sign Revis to a 10 year 40 mill contract with 40 mill guarenteed. Lol Revis would take that as an insult and punch everyone in the room right in their faces…. Twice… And then kick them in the groin… And then hold out…

I’m very interested to see what waiver claims we put in. Catch you guys tomorrow.

    Long Live Joe Money Bags

    • avatar Tonks says:

they back end of a deal is nothing, they will always ask him to renegotiate. It happens with every contract.

The only thing that matters to the players is the guarentee

    • avatar Dylan says:

Its real in the sense that IF you meet all the expectations and you don’t get cut, you make all of the money. It isn’t real in the sense that you could get cut the next day and would never see a penny of it. Guaranteed money is obviously very important, but I agree that its not the only thing that matters. Total compensation is very important as well.

  18. avatar jets69 says:

There are enough good wide-outs floating around on the waiver wire to make this a bad weekend for The Clown. But if you follow his tweets, he doesn’t seem concerned as he trolls for dates online

  19. Consider Clifton Geathers, Khalif Mitchell, Brett Ratliff.

  20. avatar Jetsfan29 says:

Sanchez reminds me of the realfndeal.com guy from transformers 2 watch that movie and tell me if you disAgree! If were supposed to co habitate then you can’t be suckin the sack bro!

  21. avatar Jetsfan29 says:

When it comes to our roster there’s one weakness for this team and it’s cb, I’m not saying we need beavis but we need more than lowery and Coleman behind Wilson and alcrotraz, how tanny can be ok with this group is troubling unless he knows something about a cb on waivers or beavis that we don’t! No way does this group shut down the pats saints colts pass attacks, Please help mr t!

  22. avatar Jetsfan29 says:

Nathan vasher dre Bly and the hill were among the CBS I saw that were released, jaheem brocks Jarvis green and Howard green dlinemen released some others I saw wich not trying to pick up just caught the eye, Jacob bender Sean Ryan Brett Ratliff.

To add to the list of intriguing cuts:
DE-Jarron Gilbert (YouTube sensation and freak, great measurables), Pat White (annoy the Fish with getting first hand Fins info on the Wildcat), Michael Robinson (versatile and great special teamer…c’mon Woodhead over a guy like Robinson makes 0 sense), Myron Rolle and Raheem Brock.

  24. avatar kc. says:

after ALL the hoopla……we GOTTA sign Revis. We are gonna end up PAYING him anyways…..just do it.

  25. avatar kc. says:

OR F-ING TRADE HIM FOR TWO FIRST ROUNDERS AND LETS MOVE ON!

  26. avatar D Rex says:

Hey Guys Im a full time follower and heres my issue… my girlfriends birthday is sept 13th which is also the same day as the jets opening day monday nite vs. the raves. What the F… do i tell her to relax bc shes telling me that im a d bag and forgetting about her bday or do i make her watch the game with me? Im stuck in a hard spot and i need your help.

    • avatar James in TN says:

Break it offwith her, save the money on dinner and the gift and watch the game. A keeper would watch the game with you and incorporate the game in with her birthday like going to a nice sportsbar to watch it. So if she has a problem with the game, move on.

      My 2 cents.

    • cant miss the game, the date is messed up, but you gotta find a way to pull it off. Im assuming you are not going to the game, so make the whole day about her birthday right up until 7, take 3 hours and go back.

    • avatar Lisa Zimmerman says:

      Girl’s opinion:

      1) Male sure you buy a really nice card and thoughtful gift that you give her that day.

      2) Send her flowers at her office. Preferably a dozen roses or if she has a different favorite flower that you know about send those.

      3) Make her dinner before the game starts (if you can both get out of work early enough for this, otherwise pick something up) OR offer to pay for a dinner with her and one or two of her girlfriends so they can celebrate and then meet up with her when game is over.

      4) As soon as game is over, turn off TV and have bottle of champagne ready.

Justin Tuck was interviewed by Steve Serby of the NY Post. 2 parts of the interview I rather enjoyed

    #1
“Q: Who has a better defense, the Giants or Jets?

    A: It doesn’t matter.

Q: Is your defense in the same ballpark as the Jets?

A: No. . . . They were the No. 1 defense, and I think we were in the top 20. We got a long way to go to get to the glory and the greatness of the Jet defense.”

    #2
“Q: Your innermost feelings walking out of the old Giants Stadium for the last time after the Carolina game?

A: A feeling of letting every Giant fan ever down. Not because we lost the game, but because they beat us in every aspect of the football game. . . . I’ve never seen a Giant team look like that. It’s something I’ll always remember — I was a part of that to close down that stadium. . . . (It was) one of the all-time lows of playing in Giants Stadium and playing for the Giants period. That’s not something that’s gonna leave me anytime soon. . . . It was devastating.”

Revis situation is so rediculous. 122mil?
I highly doubt the Jets are being cheap with the with the guaranteed money either..

  29. avatar Zartan says:

JScott, Troy Smith is borderline starter . No way the jets pick him up.

  30. avatar JetOrange says:

I wouldn’t mind CJ Mosely, Gilbert could be a great fit, and how about Bobby Carpenter

  31. avatar WOJF says:

Lisa, who did you think they were keeping instead of Clowney? Once Coles was cut he was a lock to make it this far.

Did you think they would keep only three WR’s?

Agree he is on thin ice but he was safe up until this point.

I think you read too much into what went on in Hard Knocks, the criticsm of Clowney and Jackson.

I watched both and neither did one thing wrong in one preseason game, in fact Jackson has played quite well and is a big CB with cover ability, a rarity. It would shock me if he did not remain all season and even work out a roll. He is better right now than Drew Coleman and probably Lowery.

    • avatar Lisa Zimmerman says:

Wasn’t putting stock into what I was seeing on Hard Knocks. I was already familiar with most of that before it aired. Was going based on what I was hearing from sources behind the scenes. I thought receivers would be: Cotchery, Edwards and Smith and thought they’d list Woodhead as WR at least until Holmes returned. Clearly being a GM is not in my future.

  32. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

I would pick up Myron Rolle for practice squad.
