Jets Make Trade Offer for Housh

by Steiny on September 4th, 2010 at 7:23 am

Yesterday, it was speculated that the Jets might be interested in Seahawks WR TJ Houshmandzadeh.  Well, now that speculation has turned into reality as The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Joe Reedy is reporting the Jets have made a trade offer for Houshmandzadeh.  This according to a league source.

Per a league source, the Vikings, Jets, Chargers and Cardinals have made trade offers with the Seahawks for Houshmandzadeh.

As I said yesterday, this isn’t good news for David Clowney who has appeared to make the roster for now.  Personally, I would prefer the Jets to pick up Laveranues Coles.  Laveranues clearly knows the offense better, and has better chemistry with the guys in the locker room.  Rex told Laveranues he expects him to be one of the leaders of this team.   I find it hard to believe Houshmandzadeh can provide that type of leadership.  As for what the Jets are offering, I my guess would be a late round draft pick.  The Jets gave up a 5th round pick for Santonio Holmes, so I would expect a 6th or 7th round pick at best.

Stay tuned as this story develops..

  1. Wow….can’t believe they are actually going through with this! I think it would be between the Jets and Chargers of who lands Housh. This would be an ‘F you’ to Vincent Jackson. I can’t see them trading him to a divisional rival. Just offer Clowney and call it a day lol

  2. avatar Ferraro41 says:

Given Lisa’s report that both Clowney and Brooks Foster will make the final 53, wouldn’t this be worse news for Foster?

  3. this means we would pick up his $8 mill guaranteed contract?? mehh

  4. avatar tyrone says:

good move we need to have an explosive offense and if sanchez cant get it done with this talent hes getting. he will be in trouble i mean houg edwards coth keller LT then in week 4 holmes or shottie but they better produce ..hey you dont want miami getting him.

  5. avatar Spent says:

Who’s next? Hulk Hogan? This “team” is getting worse than the WWF in terms of star power ticket sales.

  6. I agree with not letting a divisional rival snag him (I said Miami all along), but we don’t air it out nearly enough to keep all these WR’s content (Unless we are winning). We won’t deviate from our ground and pound, so I’m curious to see how that can work.

  7. Spent… Hulk Hogan or Hollywood Hogan?

  8. avatar WW85 says:

I hate this trade. Coles is about as good as Housh. Coles is a team leader. Coles will be less expensive. Coles is a Jet.

Are we going to run a spread offense now? Why don’t we trade for Tim Tebow, run quad or quint sets, cut Shonn greene & go pickup Marvin Harrison–he’s looking for a job too.

    • avatar Paul says:

Coles was as good, but he’s done. He didn’t look good at all last year in Cincy. Houshmandzadeh had almost a thousand yards last season, a very good year. He could be someone they keep for a few seasons, along with JCo, and probably Holmes.

      • avatar WW85 says:

Coles hardly got throws in Cincy-he had half as many catches with a higher average–They are both 32. Coles was the #3 WR and really is as good as Housh. Housh is a bigger target, but Coles has leadership.

    • avatar tyrone says:

you guys keep forgetting coles bail out on us when rex came in and he bailed out on us to the redskins he is not wayne chrebet so l really dont care about him plus hosh has size and sanchez need tall receivers look how well it worked last year foe the chargers

  9. avatar BigKatt says:

    i don’t get it….

  10. avatar Albert says:

Want to improve your team, sign revis!!!!!!!

  11. Unless Arizona sweeps in with an offer Pete Carroll can’t refuse…. Leinart for Housh

  12. swoops* sorry, had a Raven King moment.

  13. avatar JetOrange says:

I could be wrong , but I think we already paid for Holmes with a 2010 5th round pick, but our 7th in 2011 goes for O Connell.
If we are talking about a rental, at vet minimum, I’m on board, but anything else is crazy..

  14. avatar Joe says:

Jesus……are you kidding me? Housh hasn’t done anything since the Bengals – and he was just a product of the system there. Ocho would go deep and run those clear out routes, taking the attention, if not the physical bodies of the secondary with him, and housh would be wide open underneath – OVER and OVER again. This guy is old and expensive. How can it be debatable that the Jets can’t promise both LC and T-Rich’s salary and one of them has to go, or even AD for that matter, or afford Revis apparantly – but they can beat us fans over the head for PSL’s, charge over $100 for the worst seats in the house – AND trade for a bad locker room guy/contract in Housh? Something isn’t right here, God I hope this doesn’t happen. Housh is not the answer on offense – the answer is to run the ball down the defense’s throat – use your awesome rb’s, your kick ass o-line – wait till Santonio gets back – and go to work. I’m not saying don’t throw the ball – you have to throw in this league and it has become a passing league. I just don’t see how Housh upgrades our WR’s, or our team though.

  15. avatar Zack A. says:

    I don’t really like this…

  16. avatar michael says:

why?? No QB in the league has this many legit weapons already… one more will accomplish nothing.

  17. avatar Dont Be A Frontrunner says:

i would love coles on the jets again but it looks like he is done. this season is all on sanchez and the more toys he has the better.

  18. avatar Jason says:

Not a great move IMO. Hes not cheap by any means which makes me think that this would be a sign of not chance for a Revis extension or some other cut of a decent veteran that we did not expect. Maybe they will take Joe McKnight for him.

  19. avatar Dont Be A Frontrunner says:

ya know some news that would really make me feel GREAT about the season? jets sign revis! i feel everything the jets did in the offseason they were preparing for a potential revis holdout

  20. Joe Mcnight and Clowney for Housh? lol

  21. avatar Dont Be A Frontrunner says:

    yeah why not? lol

  22. avatar simplysimon2 says:

Housh has been good, “has been”. This could be more “due diligence” on Tanny’s part for a #3 till Holmes’s returns and an upgrade at #4 at a price he thinks is a bargain. On the other hand, with Smith still on the team, I don’t get it. What I do get is that with all this shuffling and cutting, there ain’t no time for begging Mevis.

  23. avatar Dont Be A Frontrunner says:

just a random question but does anybody honestly think revis will be here for MNF?

  24. Adam_Schefter
Jets need to pay Revis, Vikings paid Favre, hard to imagine any team now trading for T.J. Housh’s $7 million-this-year contract.

  25. I am starting not to think so honestly. It’s going to be whoever budges first, and both sides are confident enough to start the season without each other. Sad, but its the nature of the NFL. If we can start 2-0 that definitely gives us the leverage.

    • avatar Dont Be A Frontrunner says:

you have a good point. behind the scenes do you really think rex and tanny are like F revis we dont need that greedy f***? i think they know they need him

  26. avatar Dont Be A Frontrunner says:

vikings were desperate which is how the jets should handle the revis situation. just pay the guy who will probably go down as the greatest jet ever and has a chance to be the greatest conerback ever when its all over

  27. I understand where both sides are coming from. But Revis did HOLD OUT for this contract that he’s not happy with anymore. Needless to say, he definitely outplayed it, but i just don’t see why he can’t lower his demands just a little. He knows the Jets are working hard to get a deal done (shrewd moves and veteran cuts).

  28. avatar Dont Be A Frontrunner says:

yeah your right but revis doesnt agree. i wish i knew where revis was i think i would get a deal done

  29. avatar eddie b says:

well give mcnight a USC guy for housh haha

  30. LOL should stand outside his house and hold a boom-box over your head and serenade him while he’s sleeping.

  31. avatar Dont Be A Frontrunner says:

well i remember reading on here he is in his hometown area of pittsburgh so im on my way. expect revis back shortly

  32. avatar WW85 says:

The extra $4mm/year that Revis wants could be the difference in signing Harris, Holmes &/or Braylon. Good teams understand this.Brady took a paycut so the Pats could sign other great players & contend every year.

Sick of Revis—He can sit and stew for 3+ years or we can trade him for guys who want to win championships.

  33. Touche WW85…I’m not down with losing 1 or 2 of those possible players!

  34. avatar Dont Be A Frontrunner says:

only if revis would understand. i think rex got to him a little bit. wait isnt this post about housh? lol

  35. all posts in 1 way or the other are Revis related…Look what he has done to us!!

  36. avatar Dont Be A Frontrunner says:

yet another good point jetfan in miami. nice talking to you. maybe just maybe next time im on here revis will grow a damn brain and stop being greedy. later

  37. Im Getting Sick Of People Saying Just Pay Revis. O OK Well Just Give Him 160 Million With ALOT Of It Guaranteed and Lose A Couple Players.

  38. If we get Housh we have the best receiving Core in The NFL by the way.

  39. What team would want mcknight?

  40. avatar NorCal says:

Ham sandwich and a role of tape for Housh. Not needed.

  41. avatar burf says:

This makes no sense… even trading a 6th. Coles would be my choice. Besides, let’s see if Schott can integrate players like Keller, Brad Smith, etc, into the offense, before trading for more weapons. He wasn’t even able to use Leon effectively, when he was here. He never got enough touches.

  42. avatar Mars Blackmon says:

Strong points fan in Miami. Jets talk in some good ****. I start at the top and sometimes before I get a chance to make a point someone else beats me to it. This is better than reading the paper with their false sources and lack of true jets blood. The passionate fans are here.

  43. avatar bernie says:

Wait, Tannenbaum wants to trade away draft picks? Stop the presses!

Is Housh that much better than Coles or Clowney or some other free agent that was cut yesterday, that he’s worth a draft pick? The guy is 33 and will be the #5 WR. I don’t get it.

  44. FWIW, although I agree with Burf that the trade makes no sense, even trading a 7th, the fact is that Housh is unlikely to see the field.

Braylan, Cotch are solid when we go 2 WR. Hous doesn’t know the playbook. In a week he will learn a few plays but once he runs them he has to sit out. That only leaves three more games before Santonio is back.

All this confusion and worry seems like much ado about nothing but insurance should something happen to Braylan or Cotch. In an uncapped year, a year of salary makes little difference to guy we are unlikely to keep beyond this year.

  45. avatar ziggyd says:

we give our picks away too easily…they’re probably going to release him anyway…it seems like we’re the only team that releases players routinely, and get nothing for them aka: Pennington….Jones…Faneca…I think Coles…that’s why we have depth problems…look how NE stockpiles picks…

  46. JennyVrentas
Just got word OL Michael Turkovich was already cut. Will start updating yesterday’s entry. #nyj

  47. avatar ziggyd says:

I have a question…if we waive a guy to put on the PS, and someone claims him can we pull him back like baseball can…

  48. trade Revis we don’t NEED him we can win without him, maybe we could get some players in return that are good and put their team first.

    • avatar ziggyd says:

I keep saying it, and no one is listening Mevis will never play another game as a Jet again…he’s one of these stubborn guys that won’t let go…first it’s the hold out and if the Jets don’t budge which I hope they don’t and he sits out the season he’s gone…I’m surprised his agents haven’t leaked that out already that he feels unwanted by the Jets and should be traded…

      • Read the Jason Cole of Yahoo article. His agents already got someone to write that article for him.

Integrity of sports journalism in action. Not!

        harlan

        • avatar ziggyd says:

thanks I just read it…very curious throughout his whole article defending mevis’s position he never mentioned that mevis has three years left on the deal he held out for, and got paid like a top ten pick even though he was picked 14th without ever playing a down in the NFL, and that his brilliant agents are the one’s who are the architects of having $1 mil guaranteed before a possible lock out year….I guess facts never got in the way of a good story…:)

  49. avatar kc. says:

Sanchez is gonna have a tough enough time getting the balls to the recievers we HAVE already. Adding Hous just adds more confusion and messes up the chemistry we spent all summer building. Let one of the other “slapd!ck” teams have him.

  50. why do the jets want this guy? i don’t understand why the team is going after TJ.. doesn’t make sense to me.

    • avatar Bent says:

Unless they plan to recoup the pick by trading a wide receiver in week five, I don’t really get it either, but I guess a slight upgrade is still an upgrade.

    • avatar CharlieJet80 says:

Think about it, I think Mr.T wants to surround him with as much talent as possible. The Jets may not be able to sign both Homes and Edwards after this year.If we keep Homes and Cro. consider that to be very good even though I want both WRs. What do YOU THINK BENT?

      • avatar Bent says:

We don’t know what the asking price will be but we are certainly lucky to have both Edwards and Holmes under contract for this season. If they aren’t able to keep both, they may be able to recoup the value they gave up to trade them, so those were two great moves.

I’d love to keep both, but we’ll have to weigh that up after the season.

Seems this Housh story was false, which makes sense considering nobody believed it. I think he’s surrounded by enough talent for the time being, especially after week five.

  51. avatar Tos9987 says:

If they give up any pick I will be not happy with the trade

  52. avatar tomg says:

If anything the Jets should be looking for a CB for depth in that position because as I have said revis is not playing this year. I don’t understand this move and i wish Mr. T would stop wasting draft picks. This is why the Jets have no depth.

  53. Where and why does Housh fit into this team. We are a run team, so there will not be a tremendous amount of passes tyhrown. if he comes, who does he take throws from? Edwards? Cotchery? Holmes? Keller?

We need a stopgap for the first 4 games in case one of the regulars goes down, someone who knows the system already , can fill in and then say bye bye if needed, someone like Laverneous Coles.

  54. avatar BkJetFan says:

As much as I want to see Revis on the field this season. It has now gone to far. Make that man sit for the next three years. Go win a SB without him and make sure he pays all that fine money. I have a feeling if the Jets do get a deal done with Revis that he will not have to pay the over 1/2 a million dollars in fines. Revis needs to learn some principles.

  55. I am stunned that people think we can win without revis. Maybe some games but no shot at a superbowl. This guy in my opinion is the best non qb player in football.

  56. avatar cmonleon says:

    Boooo
    Very dumb

  57. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

Lets trade Revis for Housh, Jennings and a #1 and #4 pick next year.

  58. Im saying Trade Revis for DRC and a 1st Round Pick.

  59. Trade him for noone! he is younng and briiliant and hes ours

    • Yeah And He Wants Money We Dont Have.

    • And, more importantly, if we trade him after the crap his agents and he pulled, we will see that strategy employed again, and again, and again. Is that what any Jet fan wants?

I find it amazing that fans want to reward the only NFL player under contract who refused to go to camp. The only one. If we make him sit out three years, Mangold and Brick win for being reasonable and the piggy loses millions for being selfish. Even if he plays the last three games, he will lose so much money in fines and lost endorsements that he will never recover the income lost over three or four years (assuming, as I do, a lockout).

With all the crap his agents and camp put out, do you really think he cares where he gets his money — that he really cares about being a NY Jet as Brick and Mangold obviously do?

Trading Revis is the dumbest, the dumbest thing they could do, and the only close second would be caving in to Revis’ demands that he be the $160 million dollar man.

      harlan

  60. avatar kennydajet says:

Maybe we can send Joe Mcknight and get Leon back…….forget whoseyourmama

  61. kennydajet, wouldnt that be wonderful.funny i dont here from all those jet fans who said leon was done and mcknight will fill his role.

  62. avatar kc. says:

I will ACTUALLY go on RECORD right NOW and say that I would RATHER have COLES back than pick up TJ WHOSYOURMAMMA.

  63. He should be the highest paid defensive player in football. And tanny went to him and said we are tearing up your contract. And its a business mangold and brick would follow more money to another team

  64. avatar Zenlaw says:

I don’t understand this. Aren’t the Jets stacked already at WR? How will Brad Smith see the field once Housh is in the fold?

    This move makes no sense.

  65. the whole seasons hinges on revis and sanchez hopefully playing more maturely then he acts. who cares about tj.

  66. avatar Shamik says:

Coles as a long-time Jet favorite would be a great locker-room presence. I can imagine him as the calm, quiet veteran that keeps everyone in line and focused on a playoff run.

  67. Hey rex if you are looking for leadership he is in kansas city and arizona

  68. avatar kennydajet says:

Yes I still miss Leon. Just don’t think mcknight has what it takes. I also think that Leons injury and subsequent trade is playing a major facto in the Revis hold out…….smh. Still we do not need another WR

  69. TheJetsStream
Per league source, #Jets did NOT offer trade to Seattle for WR TJHoushmandzadeh. #nfl #nyj

  70. avatar jvsvn says:

This is a hard deal to understand. Given the receivers we already have (including Keller)I don’t see how TJH improves the team. Not to mention the finances of his contract and other potential headaches that come along with him.

  71. avatar Max V.V. says:

Mehta just reported that this was FALSE. The Jets have NOT made an offer for Housh.

  72. avatar tomg says:

I just heard on the WFAN that Houshmandzadeh was released.

  73. avatar Brad says:

Dont understand how the Jets are so cheap that they wont bring in guys like Coles and Adalius Thomas now cause they dont want to guarantee them their Vet. Min. contract, and also cant come to terms with Revis, but are considering Housh for 7Mil.!

  74. avatar Dylan says:

I don’t believe this for a second. No chance the Jets would pay his 7 mil base salary. They cut Coles who was making the league minimum to save money. I think that this is completely fabricated.

  75. avatar GGG says:

I think Coles is a better fit though per Schefter,

“His Seahawks contract includes offset language that makes Seattle liable to pay Houshmanzadeh whatever his new team doesn’t.

So if Houshmanzadeh were to sign a veteran minimum deal of $850,000, the Seahawks would be liable for the remaining $6.15 million balance.”

… so maybe that has something to do with the Tanny’s interest? Low risk/High reward? Who knows …

  76. avatar Andrew says:

Why do we need ANOTHER WR?

  77. @TheJetsStream: Per league source, #Jets did NOT offer trade to Seattle for WR TJHoushmandzadeh. #nfl #nyj

Gotta luv a good source .. Lmao

  78. I know people don’t like to give the names of their source, but can’t they atleast give their rank or something. Modern day journalism is a joke. You literally can’t believe anything you see or read. It’s kinda sad, but it’s always been like this to some extent so can’t get too upset.

  79. avatar Lysol says:

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Don’t do it. Pay revis and Harris dummies!!!!!!!!

  80. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

I think if we can trade revis for a bunch of picks and a legit #2 cornerback in the league we will be fine. Wilson is unproven still, but will be okay. Trade him and Bryan Thomas for Bryan Orakpo and Philip Buchanon and a 2nd rounder. That would be a good deal for the Jets. Cromartie can be a #1 CB and do fine. Orakpo would be a beast at the pass rush.

  81. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

I wouldnever pay Revis 16 mill or 15.2 mill whatever. Only the QB (franchise) gets those dollars. Everyone else is less. We have hungry players that want to play for this TEAM. Let them play and trade away the selfish ones.

  82. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

another option…trade him and B Thomas for Lamar Woodley and Bryant McFaddon and a 3rd Rounder.

  83. avatar tyrone says:

Can some one get me Revis agent I’m holding out from my job cause they want me to sign something I don’t agree with..or I go on unemployment and they have to pay.this Is catchy .
