It’s Still Not Over

by Lisa Zimmerman on September 5th, 2010 at 8:04 pm

NEW YORK–Well, we haven’t gotten any official word from the Jets about anything yet today, however, I’ve been able to confirm almost everything you’ve been reading and hearing all day. The team cut David Clowney (now can I say I told you so?), Chauncey Washington, and then the big bombshell, Tony Richardson.

Rex Ryan had said that Richardson would make the team, that he had earned the right to be on it. It’s possible they will bring him back after Week One so that they won’t have to guarantee his salary for the season (a la Laveranues Coles). I think that could happen, but how short on cash are they that they can’t just give Richardson this money and keep him on board, given everything he brings to the table? This is a move that’s going to put a very negative spotlight on them.As I’ve been saying about Clowney, he didn’t have enough catches and overall production for the team’s liking during camp and the preseason. They kept him on the active roster yesterday just as a placeholder until they found someone else. Which they did. The team has signed Patrick Turner who was with the Miami Dolphins last year. He had three catches. We’ll see how that goes.

The Jets also signed tackle Patrick Brown who was with the Vikings and Marcus Dixon, a defensive end from the Cowboys. These are two positions where the team needed to add a little depth.

So far, there are three players who have been signed to the practice squad: Robby Felix, Ricky Foley and Larry Taylor.

I have not been able to confirm what has happened with Cody Brown.

The Jets also put in claims for Jarron Gilbert (DT)  from Chicago and Logan Payne (WR) from the Vikings, but they were awarded Dixon and Turner instead – the Jets may have had them as priorities over Gilbert and Payne.

I had been told that Jason Davis had been claimed by the Arizona Cardinals, but per a recent Tweet by him the claim was taken back.

The Jets practice tomorrow morning so one would think they would want to have their practice squad in place by then…Odd that there’s still so many outstanding questions here.

Losing T-Rich was a huge blow to the locker room. His skills were diminishing but he was still a rock last year and now we’re gonna rely on a rookie fullback in our dominant running game?

I;m hoping to god some of these moves are really only being made to get Revis signed longterm but I think we need to forget about him this season. We’re a week away from opening night and they’re still miles apart.

  2. avatar JPM says:

I don’t understand the Richardson move at all. Rex loves the guy and is talking about the complete lack of leadership on offense, then they release him? I haven’t subscribed to the idea that the Jets are cheap, but they really couldn’t pay one guy $800,000? I may be changing my mind about that one.

  3. avatar Michael M. says:

the T-Rich cut makes me sick.

  4. avatar JPM says:

Paul, if this was a move to get Revis signed then this doesn’t bode well for the future of the team. If the Jets give Revis $16 million a year we’re going to be seeing a lot of questionable cuts over the next ten years so they can pay the Revis contract. There will be little to no depth on the roster down the road.

Patrick turner is not going to be on practice squad??

  7. avatar Tos9987 says:

So they want every washed up FA for doubble what they are worth . But we cant sign our best player and release our best leader . Gee wonder why they cant sell PSL season tickets

Ill say thats going to be a real negitive .

Obviously Tanny dropped the ahmmer on that one .

300 comments and nobody is stating the obvious.

connor is an absolute beast. he has been so good that he made t-rich expendable. he goes out on the field and tunes people up and he just keeps his mouth shut. that’s 90% of leadership.

props to Terminator for an awesome pre-season and props to Tanny and Rex for a sweet draft pickup.

    enough said.

    • avatar Tos9987 says:

I am excited about Conner too but , it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth about the team . Imagine whats going through the locker room now .

    • avatar AKA Jack says:

Yeah, I’d have to agree with this. Connor has been playing lights out. I also think the constant chirping about this team being cheap is silly. The Jets, like every team in the league, are constantly trying to get better and younger, it’s the nature of the beast.

Hate to lose T-Rich even if its only for a couple games but roster spots are at a premium and no team, not even the Jets, keep 2 fullbacks.

  9. The New York Cessnas?

They can’t afford a bigger plane? Are they gonna have to take AMTRAK to their Super Bowl?

I know that Woody’s been shut out of the Johnson & Johnson business and fortune for a long while, and that he had to make his own money outside of the family business, but if he’s THIS broke, he should sell to someone who is fully capitalized.

This is NY, Woody, everything is more expensive here — both the coffee AND the cornerbacks.

So, when do the PSL holders storm the Woody Bowl with pitchforks and torches and demand their money back?

No sense whatsoever. This seems like a case of going to the well one too many times with asking the question of…”Who do we really need?”

I will say it has been a bit strange to see how many teams are cutting potential impact players due to salary gurantees. It seems front offices are just nervous about the implications of a new CBA and how it will affect the potential long term deals of key players going forward.

In fairness to the Jets….They are thinking about Revis, Harris, Braylon/Santonio, Cromartie?, potential emergences of new D-Linemen…Big Jenks ( A very BIG part of this time) is nearing the end…They want as much flexibility going forward as possible and we know they are not afraid to pull the trigger on a deal during the season if they think it will benefit the team. Just remember, we were all wondering how they would find a way to lock up the entire core of young cornerstones and with every move they get a bit closer to doing it…

The Revis situation is interesting because they could be cutting corners to give him as much as possible…Or…If they do come into a situation to trade Revis it will be for a top talent making top dollar or high draft picks they will want to sign to long term deals. Just a thought…

All of that being said, I hate the T-Rich move. Even if we do sign him and Coles after week 1…Is that really the message we want to send?

According to his wiki profile. Jarron Gilbert is a Jet.

    • avatar Lisa Zimmerman says:

I know. Not sure if they haven’t fixed it since the claim was rescinded or if something else going on. Still trying to find out.

makes noooo sense the FO is pissing me off right now if he manages to blow this season in the name of FISCAL RESPONSIBLITY im never watching this team again. youd think since your saving money on not having revis back you could splurge on an old fullback. im not liking where this is going.

i had tickets to the first game but im thinking about selling them now it seems they want to throw away the first game to save a little bit of money. why should i spend money on tickets and parking and food when they cant try to put the best team possible out there

It is a reflection of what all businesses in this economy are doing: they move work to cheaper locales for a short term gain. Long Term, America can’t afford the cheaper goods because we are all unemployed.
Long Term Jets have trouble getting players because they know they will just cut you no matter if you have a deal for a cheaper less productive replacement: SEE Joe McKnight.

Sad but true, it’s a business.

  19. avatar clint says:

who picked up jarron gilbert then?

  20. avatar clint says:

I would like to see us get jarron gilbert or douglas back, hopefully we find out more on those.

  21. avatar Broadway12 says:

I really don’t think its so much of them being CHEAP. But its just ludacris to think of keeping 2 FB’S. And since the kid shined during the pre season it was an easy decision. Give up on a guy who shows crazy promise and let him shine on another team? Or keep the guy who is probably thinking about retirement after the season .And then look around for a quality blocking back that you just don’t see that much anymore, since its a pass first league. I’m ready to ROLL with the TERMINATOR 9-15-10 JUDGEMENT DAY!

  22. avatar Wesleywalker says:

Read on thejetsstream twitter that per profootball talk that Gilbert was signed to PS 3 hours ago… Not sure it is accurate but it was posted there…

  23. avatar cmart28 says:

Just wondering, is it at all possible that Richardson was just cut while they make adjustments to the roster and will be back before week 1?

  24. avatar TJBfan says:

I’ve backed the front office on many moves I disagree with but releasing T-Rich makes me absolutely sick. Its a classless move to make after saying he will definitely make the team.

Don’t make a statement like that and release a player who deserves more respect than that for his time in the league and all he’s done to bring John Conner along(and could still do this year).

  25. Fact is, understanding it is a business, but Jets are giving off the impression that they can “get by” for at least the first week without guys that would contribute, even if in a minor role — wrong message for a franchise, especially one in this market that is thought to be a win-now mentality.

  26. avatar will shapiro says:

I’m really hoping this is Revis-related

The NFL is a cut-throat business – but does our team have to be the most cut throat? There’s something to be said for team leadership, camaraderie and loyalty. This has disaster written all over it, which we’ve all come to know all too well over the years.
