Jets Roster Movements

by Weeks on September 5th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

We will be tracking the Jets’ roster movements throughout the day and will continously update this post.

Practice Squad

C Robby Felix – According to Jenny Vrentas, the team will assign Felix to the PS. Felix had previously signed on with the Baltimore Ravens in 2008 before heading to the UFL in 2009.

DE/OLB Ricky Foley – CFL stand out Foley will be heading down to the PS.

WR Larry Taylor – Taylor who was on Mike Westhoff’s good side and had a solid preseason didn’t get a chance to crack the active roster. However according to his agents, Taylor will join the PS.

OLB Cody Brown – A second round pick by the Cardinals in 2009, Brown joins the Jets according to his agent. Aaron Wilson reports that Brown will end up on the PS.

Claims

WR Patrick Turner – As Steiny noted earlier, the Jets have claimed Turner off waivers.

DE Marcus Dixon – According to Dixon’s Twitter account, he has been signed by the Jets. Dixon who was previously a Dallas Cowboy joined the Boys in 2008 as an undrafted free agent.

T Patrick Brown – Schefter reports that the Jets have claimed former Viking Patrick Brown off waivers. Brown went undrafted in 2009 and was picked up by the Panthers. Brown later joined the Patriots before heading to Minnesota.

Waived/Released

WR David Clowney - After signing Turner, the Jets abruptly cut Clowney from the active roster.

RB Chauncey Washington – According to Vrentas the Jets plan to waive Washington however they hope to re-sign him to the practice squad.

FB Tony Richardson – After picking up Brown off waivers, the Jets had one too many on board and the team determined Richardson was the odd man out. Though I’m sad to see the team lose one of their best veterans, John Conner has been turning heads and unfortunately when your over the fifty three man limit (or your just being cheap) something’s got to give.

    No0o.. Baby Jesus>> WHY

  2. avatar Jayson says:

Wow. Knew that clowney’s position was tenuous at best. Turner was supposed to be a steal when he was drafted. maybe he pans out here. I really liked chauncey washington, this will add a lot of fuel to the anti-Joe MCcKnight-ers out there

  3. avatar Jayson says:

also puts a lot of pressure on Woodhead

  4. avatar juunit says:

Oh god damnit, are you serious? That means we only have two RB’s in Greene and LT. McDonald$ is garbage and he won’t even be active according to Rex. So unless you count Conner as the third RB, we have two. Isn’t that just brilliant for a “ground and pound” team?

    • avatar JDB says:

Yeah that wasn’t what the Ravens did with Ray Rice, Willis McGahee and Leron McClain.

      Stop whining

      • avatar juunit says:

Yeah, except LT is older so who knows if he can be effective for 16+ games. And Greene is bound to at least get banged up over the course of the season because his style of running. You must be one hell of an optimist if you believe those two guys are going to last the whole season completely healthy.

    • avatar charleyjet says:

Yes, I too am puzzled by cutting Chauncey Washington. He surely looked to me like a good option at RB. I don’t expect to see McKnight on the field unless they get desperate for a punt returner.

  5. O Wow Clowney’s Gone. Hope He Gets A Spot Somewhere Mr.August was popular here.

  6. avatar Bent says:

I’d much rather have Conner carrying the ball a few times a game and playing special teams.

Hey, we only have 52 players on the active roster if Chauncey is waived. Is there anyone on an inactive list that might be about to be activated to take that final spot, I wonder? Yes, that’s it. AINGE is coming back!

  7. How do you keep Woodhead over Wasington?
    This is some BS.

Ground & Pound is dead. Woodhead is trash, Washington is lifetimes better.. Ughhhh

    Long Live the Clown

    Long Live Joe Money Bags

  8. avatar jlad56 says:

btw, Steelers Release Hartwig…Any possibility on getting him and put him at guard to keep our QB ALIVE!!!!

  9. avatar Jayson says:

veteran RB? PLEASE no Fast Willie Parker…i guess at this point he is “not so fast” willie parker

  10. avatar jets69 says:

Turner is an upgrade over Clowney-See ya Clown!

  11. avatar Wesleywalker says:

Is this Dixon cat any good? Never heard of… Clowney Washington and Jackson last 3 to make team. So 1st 3 to leave if necessary…

  12. avatar Wesleywalker says:

I saw that Stacy Andrews was traded for… He could have helped quard situation. But money would be the issue? Hartwig is not bad. But not sure if he fits here…

  13. avatar Jetsfan310 says:

How many carries did you think Washington was going to get a game maybe 2. Get real this is only going to hurt our special teams because I did like what Washington did on special teams cant really judge cutting Washington untill we see who they pick up

    • So why keep Woodhead over him? If you day because he can play WR, I will … I will .. I’ll probably just laugh..

      • avatar Bent says:

Maybe it’s because he’s a superior special teamer. In fact, I’m sure it is that.

Yes, Chauncey had that one big hit. I didn’t really see him contribute other than that on specials.

Given the choice of two average guys with no upside, you always keep the better special teamer.

        • avatar juunit says:

He recovered a fumble on special teams too.

          • avatar Bent says:

            No, he didn’t.

Clowney, Woodhead, Laury and Gholston recovered fumbles on special teams. Washington did not.

Chauncey had one tackle/FF on special teams and that was it. Other than the 22 yarder he broke in the last game he averaged 2.5 yards per carry (with one lost fumble) against backups too.

          • avatar Dylan says:

He didn’t recover a fumble on STs, but he caused a fumble, and he made a great play recovering Holmes’s fumble on offense. I have no doubt that Washington is a better North/South runner than Woodhead. However, Woodhead can contribute in more ways. When you are the last guy on the roster, its all about STs play and versatility. Thats why Woodhead is getting the spot over Washington.

          • avatar juunit says:

I could’ve sworn he recovered a fumble… that’s weird. Maybe he fell on one while on offense? Or maybe I’m just high.

          • Or maybe you are just trying to overrate a person you like. That sounds like it.

  14. avatar HHH says:

WHY IS EVERYONE ACTING LIKE THE 3 STRING RB GET PLAY??

  15. avatar Jetsfan310 says:

Chauncey apparently isnt to happy about being cut

    TheJetsStream

Is it possible to botch a cut? Apparently. RB Chauncey Washington is fuming after learning #Jets will waive him now. #nfl #nyj

  16. avatar Wesleywalker says:

I liked what I saw from Washington. But would not see active roster except for injury…agree.. So not big deal. They will try to sign him to PS hopefully.

  17. avatar MEL31602 says:

Also Washington can be called up to the active roster if someone gets hurt or whatever, so it’s not like he’s gone for good. The only people who should be upset are the Clowney fans, if there are any of them left haha.

  18. avatar Ryan says:

Cant see exactly how Patrick Turner is an upgrade. Whats that based on? Purely on potential I guess. He was a high draft pick at a position the Dolphins were very weak at last year and didnt catch one ball all season. He was also beat out by undrafted players in training camp this year. If you were dissapointed in Clowney thats fine, but theres no basis to say Patrick Turner is an upgrade

  19. avatar Wesleywalker says:

USC? Not sure the facination… Turner didn’t make the cut for a reason. Mcfumble as well. Maybe it’s Sanchez recommendation? Talented but need that to translate at some point… At least we knew what we had in Washington and clowney…

  20. avatar MEL31602 says:

TheJetsStream: WR Larry Taylor will be on #Jets practice squad, per his agents. #nfl

  21. avatar Brad says:

Clowney was doing horrible on ST according to clips in Hard Knocks. Clowney is also a smaller WR. Turner is 6’5″ i believe- nice tall WR, Physical, and probably better on ST, plus chemistry with Sanchez!

DE- Marcus Dixon is interesting- he was the guy that was sentenced to jail for statutory rape- big thing on him on HBO real sports i believe a few years ago. He was 18 in HS and hooked up with a white girl who was 15yrs old. A crime by the law, but stuff that happens all the time. Interesting prospect, DE- 6’4″ 295lbs.

    • i watched that years ago… to this day i hate that district attorney who actually went on with the trial when he had a chance not to and sat there with no problem that he was about to ruin a young mans life for something that millions of 16 and 18 year olds do everyday

  22. avatar MEL31602 says:

RT @ProStarSports Congrats to RICKY FOLEY, resigning with the #Jets on their Practice Squad.

  23. avatar Wolf says:

Larry Taylor made it to the practice squad.

Cutting Washington is mistake. He could have really helped us this year on ST. Keeping McKnight on roster sends the wrong message to the players.

Washington proved he can play for us. We are keeping McKnight around solely based on potential? Rubbish.

  24. avatar Wesleywalker says:

Taylor looked good last preseason game…

  25. avatar Wesleywalker says:

Thanks brad… Maybe that’s why he was not drafted.. So Dixon may have some talent.

  26. avatar Wolf says:

I wasn’t one of those people rooting for the Clown. He’s got talent, but if he hasn’t put it all together yet, he probably never will. He’s a poor route runner, sloppy on ST, isn’t a good blocker and has trouble separating.

Turner is an interesting pick-up. Maybe Sanchez can motivate him.

I like the Marcus Dixon pick-up. He had an active pre-season and has great size.

Chauncey Washington got the raw end of this deal. Woodhead/McKnight should have been waived before him. The guy would have contributed on ST.

Glad to se Foley and Taylor make it to the practice squad, but I don’t see Washington making it past the other 31 teams.

  27. avatar Bent says:

If Chauncey’s that amazing, I’m sure teams will be falling over themselves to make a waiver claim. We’ll see.

I wasn’t sure he was eligible for the practice squad, being a third year player, but I think he just squeaks through, by virtue of having only been activated in six (and not seven) games in his one accrued season.

I don’t think he has much upside though, so I expect they’ll draft another running back if LDT doesn’t return next year or McKnight doesn’t pan out, so he’ll still probably end up a victim of the numbers game.

  28. avatar Dylan says:

Hard Knocks is going to be tough to watch this week.

  29. avatar AKA Jack says:

I like the Marcus Dixon signing. I have been reading about this kid since he got railroaded into jail in high school. Very smart and mentally tough and a physical specimen with a chip on his shoulder.

  30. avatar Wesleywalker says:

I think Washington goes PS… As long as no one claims. I think that was plan all along. Washington more likely to clear than mk. But Washington does deserve better…

  31. avatar Chando says:

I dont understand all the hype around Woodhead, Washington is better suited for the Jets style of running…Woodhead was a great story at 1st but is not suited for this offense and hasnt produced. I like the addition of Patrick Turner, who knows maybe the familiarity of playing with Sanchez will benefit him. As for Marcus Dixon hes definatly a project but has upside and give us depth at the DE spot.

  32. avatar Dylan says:

Adam_Schefter Jets claim former Vikings OT Patrick Brown on waivers. #nyj

  33. avatar AKA Jack says:

Yea, I’m a little surprised at some of the gushing about Woodhead and the lack or respect for Washington. Washington was clearly the 3rd best back on the field for the Jets during the preseason and number 4 wasn’t close.

Woodhead has done next to nothing in his time with the Jets and while I admire his hustle and attitude his skills don’t make up for his lack of size. If Greene gets dinged and we have to go with a combination of LT and McKnight or LT and Woodhead we are in deep doo doo.

    • avatar Dylan says:

Its all about versatility and special teams play when you are the last man on the roster. Washington is a better north/south runner, but Woodhead does more. Thats why he is on the team, and Washington got cut.

      • avatar AKA Jack says:

And yet, Woodhead hasn’t done more. What has he done in his time with the Jets? I understand the argument that he is more versatile but he hasn’t produced when he is on the field.

The real reason for Washington getting cut is 1) the decision to keep 2 fullbacks which is very unusual 2) the coaching staff’s refusal to cut bait on McKnight 3) the decision to keep 4 tight ends.

If nothing changes our game time roster is going to include Greene, LT and Woodhead as running backs. Sorry, that doesn’t fill me with confidence.

        • avatar Dylan says:

Oh please. We led the league in rushing using TWO running backs all season. Greene didn’t even play until Leon got injured. Woodhead also had 8 receptions and 15 rushes, which is about what you would expect from the last guy on the roster. And cutting McKnight would be an awful move. The guy had a bad offseason, but he has WAY more potential than Washington or Woodhead.

          • avatar AKA Jack says:

And Greene got hurt twice last year and missed games. So by your admission that backs get hurt and Rex’s statement that McKnight isn’t ready for prime time, as I said our active backfield is going to consist of Greene, LT and Woodhead.

We led the league because we had two straight ahead power backs and until he got hurt Leon as the change of pace. We now have 1 power back, one change of pace back and a guy that goes down in a light west wind. I’d rather have power right now than potential.

          • avatar Dylan says:

So then we pick up another RB. There are a ton of guys out there that can contribute as much as Washington. Actually, Washington will probably still be available. But while we do have Greene and LT, Woodhead can contribute more.

          • avatar James in TN says:

            LMAO, McSuck should be cut.

        • avatar Bent says:

Washington wouldn’t fill me with confidence either.

Woodhead’s value comes merely from being able to fill in at two spots, even without producing, there is value just in being able to line up in the right place and not blow any assignments saving you a roster spot. Don’t underestimate his value to the scout team either.

If Greene or LdT went down for longer than a week, they’d instantly pick up another RB, not rely on Woodhead, but I believe the situation would also be the same with Chauncey.

I’d certainly advocate cutting Woodhead for a good runner. I just don’t think Washington is any better than he is.

          • avatar AKA Jack says:

Then we’ll just have to disagree. Woodhead has really done nothing in his time with the Jets. I don’t think either of them is going to lead us to the promised land but I’d take Washington over Woodhead.

            • avatar Bent says:

Either way, it was close. I can see why Woodhead got the edge, but it wouldn’t have surprised me if the decision went the other way.

    • avatar Bent says:

They’re both no better than average, so the better special teamed gets it, especially if he adds versatility.

Washington broke a 22 yard run in the last game. Other than that, he averaged 2.5 yards per carry and lost a fumble.

The gushing about Woodhead is misplaced, but Chauncey flashed a couple of times, but was mostly very ineffective.

  34. avatar Tim from nj says:

    JasonLaCanfora

Dolphins release DE Marques Douglas, DE Charles Grant and G Cory Procter. Miami also announced CB Will Allen put on Injured Reserve.

    maybe we take back douglas?

    • avatar Bent says:

Real good chance of that. The reason they didn’t bring him in was because they wanted Potty to play instead. Him or Kroul, though?

The Dolphins save a $145,000 bonus by cutting him, so next time the Jets are accused of penny pinching…

  35. avatar jvsvn says:

Clowney wasn’t going to contribute much in the passing game this year and Turner probably won’t either. With Turner, my guess is that the Jets are looking for a big receiver to develop for the post-Braylon future. Given his history with Sanchez, hopefully Turner can reach his potential with the Jets. There is no ways we will be giving big money next year to both Edwards and Holmes. Based on all of the players and coaches comments over the course of the preseason, they probably already feel that Edward’s skill set is more easily replaced. Maybe Turner is the guy.

  36. avatar Oli3268 says:

    Bent

once this has settled and the roster/practice squad is set. Could you do a piece on all the new guys we picked up.

    thanks

  37. avatar MEL31602 says:

Dolphins cut Marcus Douglas… d-line depth anyone?

  38. This is almost as exciting as the draft. lol .. Seriously.

  39. avatar pat says:

another thing to consider here is the fact that when the jets only have 4-5 picks in a draft, that means they usually used the others to pick up solid starters. For instance, trading a 5th rounder-let me repeat that-FIFTH ROUNDER for a guy under 26 who caught almost 80 passes for over 1200 yards last year, its basically picking up draftees. only difference is, santonios proven to be a force.

point is, the jets get more out of their picks in terms of solid starters than any other team, whereas the patriots trade away solid starters (derrick burgess) for draft picks who may never see the field

    • avatar jvsvn says:

There is no one way to build a winning team. I hate the patriots but they’ve had a lot of success with their personnel philosophy and system. And that’s exactly the point. It wasn’t until the last 2 or 3 years that you could even say that the Jets had a philosophy on how to build a team. As a long time Jet fan, the last 2 or 3 years has been a major change (and upgrade) in how the team was put together and run.

Seattle with more surprises: Seahawks cut RB Julius Jones and DB Jordan Babineaux.

  41. @Adam_Schefter: Seattle with more surprises: Seahawks cut RB Julius Jones and DB Jordan Babineaux.

  42. avatar jcc says:

Can somebody explain where this extra roster spot came from? I was under the impression that we had 53 last night, but now we have claimed 3 and waived 2. Where is the other spot coming from? I don’t quite get why we claimed Patrick Brown. We have 8 OL already and the only one I really don’t have any confidence in is Ducasse at the moment. Turner and Hunter are our two legitimate backup linemen and Slauson is a serviceable guard.

  43. avatar Harvlis says:

I think the Jets should take TJ Hush over Patrick Turner, if they could get him for the right price. I would have been happy with Clowney but, as long as he is gone, TJ is an experienced pro, whereas Turner is a project. I would love Turner on the practice squad but, TJ is a no-brainer.

  44. avatar Jc says:

When are Jets going to announce full practice squad seems the rest of the league has

  45. avatar jets69 says:

Dont the Jets have 54 on the Roster now. They added three and cut two. Who is going. Probably an OL since they picked up a tackle. Does anybody know?

    • avatar Bent says:

I wonder if Wayne Hunter’s in trouble. He wasn’t very good in preseason.

Alternatively, they might want 8 contributing linemen, so Ducasse could be buried on the inactive list, like McKnight.

  46. Dixon is on the practice squad, NOT the active roster. With the OL Brown added we are at 53.

  47. avatar Wolf says:

Douglas is ‘the failsafe. Like Grant though…

Anybody think Kroul should make team?

  48. avatar Wolf says:

I want Slauson to being back the war paint for opening day.

  49. avatar Brad says:

Kroul has shown some ability, but Douglas did start for us last year and was solid. Besides possibly cutting Kroul the only area we can cut somoene on D is at CB- Brian Jackson.

  50. avatar Wolf says:

If you all love Houston so much, why don’t you marry him?

Or better yet, follow him on twitter. Golvos21

  51. avatar Dylan says:

@mortreport:Jaguars have signed ex-Brown, ex-Jet QB Brett Ratliff to their practice squad…. Leinart not in their picture right now

Damn I didn’t know he was still PS eligible.

  52. avatar DMazz says:

I really hope Mr T and Rex don’t let Marques slip away. I was a fan of his play on defense.

  53. avatar MrJetGreen says:

Roto World posted that the Jets picked up Jarron Gilbert. I’m not sure we need any Gilbert’s….

  54. avatar Zartan says:

I disagree with keeping Woodhead, doubt another team picks him up aposed to Washington.

The only success McKnight can have, is at WR. That is where he should had been converted to and CHauncey the #3 back.

  55. “The only success McKnight can have, is at WR.”

  56. avatar Dylan says:

Jarron Gilbert, the #Bears 3rd round pick last season, has been claimed by the #Jets per a league source.

  57. what do you think is going through Revis’ head right now?!! A week to go until Monday Night Football, opening up against the Ravens. The whole broadcast they are going to be talking about Revis whether he is there or not. If he’s not there, I think the announcers will be beating him up the whole night, if he is there — he will be a hero…what does everyone think is going through his head.

  58. avatar BamBam says:

Is Ricky Foley to old for the practice squad? He was born on born April 2, 1981. That makes him 28.

His ex-CFL coach was quoted as saying: “I understand, because of his age, he’s not eligible for a spot on an NFL practice roster,” Buono said. “If he becomes free, we’ll talk again. I view him as a potential starter, yes.”

    • avatar JetsFan4Life says:

Per PFT (take with grain of salt)…An earlier version of this post passed along a report from Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune that the Jets claimed Gilbert off waivers. The team did put a claim on him, but Gilbert is a free agent because the Jets put a higher priority on Marcus Henry, who they landed from Dallas.

  61. avatar Dylan says:

@BradBiggs #Jets put priority on DE Marcus Dixon. When they got him, they no longer wanted Gilbert.

  62. avatar Dylan says:

  69. Jets released T Rich .. Wow

  70. avatar Jetsfan310 says:

    Wow. I cant believe it.

    Adam_Schefter

This had to be a tough one: Jets released veteran FB Tony Richardson, one of the league’s classiest players.

  71. avatar Jc says:

When we gonna know our practice roster

  72. avatar Steiny says:

Best of luck T Rich. Damn thats going to be hard to watch on Hark Knocks.

  73. avatar SackDance99 says:

All this crying over Chauncey Washington? A north/south upright runner with no elusiveness, ability to turn the corner or breakaway speed? Guys like that just can’t be successful in the NFL. So, a 22 year-old 4th round pick has a rough NFL training camp and he should be cut? I thought he was the Jets best punt returner in pre-season and he was making progress at hitting holes, but his fumbling stymied his momentum. I don’t know whether McKnight can play in the NFL, but he has NFL talent. Washington will likely never be a significant NFL contributor because he does not have NFL talent and he’s 25, an age when if he hasn’t made it at RB, he likely never will. With guys like Michael Robinson, Derrick Ward and Julius Jones there are guys better than Washington that the Jets can sign. Heck, I’d even take a flyer on Blount, whose running style is similar to Washington’s, but Blount has more speed and power and he’s a battler (even if a tad over-zealous).

  74. wtf?? You think Tanny is going to re-sign him after week 1 for salary purposes??? I am so upset right now

  75. avatar Bobby says:

Terrible, terrible move…one Rex definitely wasn’t on board with…if they don’t sign Revis in the next couple days, I will seriously have doubt about this season.

  76. avatar SackDance99 says:

WOW! I’m very surprised by T-Rich…any chance he will be re-signed tomorrow after the Jets make some moves, like when the Eagles traded Andrews and immediately re-signed Gilles? Conner, IMO, deserves the PT because he’s a dynamic blocker and useful special teamer, but T-Rich looked great, too.

    • avatar Bent says:

Maybe. Or maybe after week one.

I did kind of predict this, but based on preseason I thought he’d earned his spot.

Guessing this I’d more to do with the roster spot than the money.

  77. avatar Dylan says:

WOW that pisses me off a little bit. You are seriously going to complain about the lack of leadership, and then cut the unquestionable team leader just so you can save a little money? I don’t like the message that it sends to the team.

  78. avatar Rudibager says:

How the hell can they cut T-Rich? Wow, this is the first move that has actually made me panic since Rex has got here.

  79. avatar Albert says:

With the cut of t-rich, I do not know what the hell this front office is doing anymore

  80. avatar Ryan says:

Tanny and the crew have done a great job since they came in, but Thats the only thing about this regime that I dont like. They will get rid of a guy whos important on and off the field who is a leader just to save a few bucks. I mean T-Rich was making the veterans minimum. I dont like the move, oh and btw he can still play.

    • avatar Bent says:

He had a good preseason, but he really wasn’t that consistent last year. He fell off a lot from 2008.

They apparently no longer have room for 2 FBs at this time. It was obvious Conner would get priority in such a situation.

  81. avatar Dylan says:

Does anyone else think Hard Knocks is gonna be brutal this week?

  82. My guess is it was planned between both parties in an attempt to stock up money for Revis. They can resign him after the first game if is and pay him per game…

  83. avatar dabu says:

I’m hearing there’s a chance Tony Richardson could re-sign after Wk 1, when his salary wouldn’t be guaranteed. Stay tuned. #Jets

  85. avatar Brad says:

    Great Job JETS:
Biggest leader of the Team- Thomas Jones- Cut
Biggest leader of Offensive Line- Faneca- Cut
Biggest Leader of Defense/Best Player- Revis- unable to come to an agreement on new contract- might sit out for the season
Current Team Leader- T-Rich- now cut too!
I see this season going real well!

    • avatar Dylan says:

I would argue that Scott and not Revis was the biggest leader on defense. But yeah, its pretty brutal. I still don’t think its anything that can’t be overcome though.

    • avatar Tonks says:

cept Revis, all those players were passed their prime

I feel bad because of Richardson

Jets do have players that replace those guys on the field

    • I agree 100%. they keep cutting these leaders and all that is left is a immature squad that brings cheeseburgers to practice. This whole summer i couldn’t wait for the season to start but know with so many ?’s about team leaders and all their talking ****( coaches ), i lost alot of fire. how are these players suppose to come together when they keep cutting these high character leaders. Jason Taylor keeps coming late to practice and they make a joke of it.WTF ! i am starting to feel as if they don’t know what they are doing.

  86. avatar NYJBeast89 says:

The Jets cut a class guy like T-Rich to save a couple hundred thousand, no wonder Revis doesn’t trust these guys. I really want Tanny fired, he has been putting Purse before Team for too long now, Jason Kendall, Coles, Baker, Faneca, Leon and the beat goes on.

    • Yes this is why Revis is holding out! (sarcasm)

      *refrains self from name calling*

    • avatar SackDance99 says:

That would be “Pete” Kendall, who is out of the NFL, now. The Jets spend to the cap limit and need $$$ to sign Revis. Coles and Baker didn’t last more than 1 season with their new teams. Let’s see what happens with Faneca and Leon. Oh, and you forgot Victor Hobson, he’s out of the NFL, too. Sounds like Tanny knows when to cut guys loose before their poor play hurts the Jets.

    • avatar Tonks says:

it is annoying but Tanny has been a great GM

    • avatar Jetsfan310 says:

That has to be the worst comment ever. Tanny is one of the best GMs in the league. Do I agree with cutting T-Rich no, but its not the end of the world. Rex can lead this team himself. Bart and leonard are leaders on defense. and its time for J-co and Mangold to step up like the someone else said. You have to cut some money to afford our starters.

      • avatar dabu says:

and somehow trading for edwards, holmes, mangold, revis, sanchez, cromartie and signing scott to big deal means that he’s putting purse before team?? they went to the afc championship and added many pieces. its not like theyre leaving themselves bare at fb. i like t-rich and all and its tough to let him go but thats football for you

    • avatar phil says:

how do you know those are orders aren’t coming from above Tanny????? he gets the budget, he doesn’t set the budget. Kendall and Baker were brutal after leaving the Jets. Leon is a wildcard who wanted a new deal and the Jets couldn’t afford to make that gamble. Everyone knew Coles was being brought in to hold things down for Santonio. Jury still out on Faneca but he was brutal last year according to analysts and stat trackers.

  87. avatar The Real RK says:

God I hope they know what they are doing. 3 veteran leaders are gone. Of course they are 3 leaders who on the field are close to being shot. You know D-Woody and Jenkins are probably gone after this year too. They are going to need some younger guys to step up the leadership I guess. This has not exactly been the pre-season I was expecting. I am a little nervous to say the least.

  88. avatar SackDance99 says:

I guess I was one of the only guys who took Rex Ryan’s criticism about leadership on offense asa wake up call to Sanchez, Mangold and, generally, the young guns. Mangold has to fill the leadership role that Faneca had. He’s the center and highest paid OL. He’s 1st team All Pro; it’s time to lead, son. Thomas Jones was the skill position leader, but that has to be Sanchez’s role. Sanchez sulks and broods a little too much. Leaders don’t sulk like little whiny beeatches. It’s time to cowboy up, amigo. Also, Jericho has to step up, so does Brick. The Jets have a good core of young players on offense, it’s time to sack the babysitters and trust them not to set the house on fire.

  89. avatar Dylan says:

Woody just said that it was “shocking” to him on Jets nation.

  90. And another lkeader bites the dust

  91. Someone explain to me after watching hard knox, the poor preseason, and no revis all i am seeing is 0 and 2

  92. avatar NYJBeast89 says:

RJF- I’m right with you brother, I am typically a “middle of the road” Jet fan but something tells me the Ravens are gonna put it on us without Revis and the Pats are coming into the Meadowlands with ALOT of venom. I don’t see this going well at all.

  93. avatar bmack says:

This is a bs move. all that talk on hard knocks about leadership is all for tv.

  94. NYJBeast89 it just feels like we are in big trouble

    • avatar SackDance99 says:

You did see the Jets’ defense and special teams dominate in the pre-season, right? You do know that the Ravens and Pats have had crippling injury and personnel issues, right? For instance, weren’t Mankins and Kaczur starters on the Pats OL? Hmmm, 40% of the starting OL out and the Pats face Jenkins, Scott and Harris up the middle? Ravens’ best player on defense, Ed Reed, is out and arguably their best CB (Foxworth) is out, too. If you drafted Braylon Edwards, start him against the Ravens, and Keller, too. Point is that every NFL team has issues. And, IMO, no Mankins on the Pats OL is one of the most under-reported stories of the pre-season. Before predicting doom, please tell me who on the Pats OL will block Big Jenks?

      • avatar Brad says:

I agree on the Pats! The Ravens- im a litle nervous- first of all- we have no chance of running on them- have u seen their front line. Were a known running team and they will stack the box. Then we will have to throw the ball, and Sanchez, with the poor pass blocking from the OL has not been up to par!

      • avatar matt says:

dont forget that the pats will be without their starting cb leigh bodden for the whole year

  95. You could see T-Rich coming, NOONE has 2 fullbacks, some don’t even have one, this gives greater flexibility elsewhere…I just hope the Terminator can block the way T-Rich did.

  96. avatar NYJBeast89 says:

RJF- The hits just keep on coming, first the Revis debacle, then losing Pace. then CRO hurting his hip, now a big time “locker room” guy is cut just to save a few bucks, its a disgrace what our “Superbowl” year has turned into.

    • avatar Jetsfan310 says:

NYJBeast89, RJF- Guess the season is safe now.

      Manish Mehta TheJetsStream

No promises, but league source just told me there’s solid chance Tony Richardson returns after Wk 1(so $$ won’t be guaranteed for yr)

  97. avatar HHH says:

    jarron gilbert to practice squad

  98. avatar michael says:

I honestly don’t mind this… they’ve still got some good leaders on offense with LT, Mangold, Woody, and even Sanchez. They’re looking to add depth at DL, so it makes sense to cut someone where you have extraneous players. Even though you’re cutting a good player, it just doesn’t make sense to carry two fullbacks. If the terminator can handle the role, I’d rather not waste a roster spot on another FB.

  99. avatar Jetsfan310 says:

Seriously though Cromartie is fine. Pace can be back as early as week 2 I dont know about Revis but I still think he resigns. Seriously relax.

  100. avatar NYJBeast89 says:

JF310- The fact that he will be returning doesn’t change the fact that its a bad move to cut a 17 year vet and team leader just to save some cash. What kind of a message does that send to younger players like Keller, Greene even Conner? A guy who played his heart out and gave his 110% to the Jets for 3 seasons was thrown out like a bag of trash.

    • avatar jvsvn says:

It gives them the message that the team believes in them. They are the 2010 New York Jets and it’s their team. Their time is now. That’s the only message I can see.

    • avatar AKA Jack says:

You keep saying they cut him only to save cash as if it was true. As has been pointed out by everyone nobody keeps two fullbacks and roster spots are crucial.

I’m disappointed to lose a guy of T-Rich’s character but this what happens to aging vets. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets resigned sometime during the season.

  101. avatar jvsvn says:

What a bunch of whiners! Are you guys Jet fans? T-Rich is a great guy and he deserves everybody’s respect. But this is the NFL. We just drafted a kid who has shown the potential to be the best FB in the NFL. How does he become the best? By being on the field, that’s how. It’s hard to become a great team by keeping a roster spot for 37 year old back-up FB who doesn’t play specials. The whole leadership thing is also overblown. Nobody becomes a leader until they’re in a position to lead. The answer is that we’ll find out who the leaders on this team are going to be when the real bullets start to fly next week. I’m a Jet fan. I believe guys will emerge.

  102. avatar dabu says:

the only thing that bothers me is do you really think that any of these guys they picked up will be better than t-rich. clown and chauncey i hear, not so much w/ t-rich. only time will tell

  103. avatar Albert says:

Someone want to be the one to ask this front office why they are being so cheap. Let’s sign everyone after week one. So we are accepting starting 0-1 to save a few bucks. And let’s mortage this whole season too

  104. avatar Dylan says:

LisaZimmerman In light of FB Tony Richardon release, this ranks as slightly less important but FB Jason Davis, with the Jets in camp, signed by Arizona

    Congrats to JD!

  105. avatar Dylan says:

marcusdixon92 Just boarded the plane and headed to join a great organization! Very excited and eager to learn and contribute as much as I can!!! #GOJETS

  106. avatar ALLNY says:

    jets just cut tony richardson
could sign him after the season so salary wont be guaranteed.

  107. I think we (Jet fans) are overreacting a bit. We didn’t cut a QB! Yes T-Rich was a leader, and yes I am saddened about it, but lets not play GM too much and assume why certain moves are made. These are grown men, and if they needed T-Rich to lead them still thats pretty sad. Its time for our QB to take a bigger leadership role

  108. avatar HHH says:

To make this look right, that money better all be going to revis greedy ass!!!

  109. We just lost the most well-respected guy in the locker room, the heart and soul of the locker room. Yet on the last Hard Knocks Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum were talking about lack of leadership. I don’t get it, I just don’t! John Conner has A LOT of potential, looks like he’s the real deal but what kind of message does this send to the rest of the team. We let go of Thomas Jones in the offseason, one of our biggest leaders last year and guys the team wasn’t quiet about how they felt about that. Now they let go of T-Rich! Even if we bring him back after week 1 it looks bad when you release the leader of the team. This season is starting to shape up to be another dissappointment I hate to say it. If Revis isn’t here week 1, boy we are in for another long season of Jets football..

    • “We just lost the most well-respected guy in the locker room, the heart and soul of the locker room.”

Where do you get this stuff from, it’s classic.

We were doomed when we cut TJ
We were doomed when we let WW go
We were doomed when we cut Faneca
      Etc etc etc

It’s hard being a Jets fan lol..

    • avatar jvsvn says:

“This season is starting to shape up to be another dissappointment”

Wow! Why, because we released a 37 year old FB. Get a grip.

      • avatar g.JETSon says:

Check the list of RBs TRich has blocked for. TJ had 1000 yrds but we get trich and he gets 1400 back to back years. Do you think conner knows blocking, stategy, this system, opposing players and their tendencies or anything NFL related better than TRich? If this is aboit money than I want to see REVIS back.

  110. avatar Dylan says:

Didn’t Rex repeatedly state that T-Rich wasn’t going anywhere? I’m sure he isn’t behind this move.

  111. This is a wild dream right now. 3 of our leading rushing team is gone. TJ, Faneca, and now T-rich. Nice…… No really nice move, they feel very well about Terminator. Man listen, just sign Revis and we’re good.

Great quote, if I’m the front office I prep Ducasse for RT now! Sign a backup Guard now! B/c I agree that Woody will be gone after this season. Jenkins is a different story. If healthy, he can play for another 3yrs.

Dont mean to be the bearer of bad news, but if we dont sign Revis were going 0-2. No doubt about that.

Dont know if I should feel bad, but I feel very nervous about the team we’re gonna field on Monday Night.

Just my feeling, were gonna get crushed.

  112. avatar Dylan says:

damienwoody Shout out to Tony Richardson….one of the classiest dudes ever! U will be missed!!!

  113. avatar jlad51 says:

Does anyone know anything about Cody Brown????

  114. I mean its a sad move, but we were preparing for life without T-Rich after last season ended. His play declined during the latter part of the year, but his locker room presence made up for it. I think its time for some1 else to step up as a leader. Plus we have other holes to fill on the roster guys.

  115. avatar tomg says:

Just got home and skimmed through the post. Let me get this straight. The Jets are doomed because they cut Tony Richardson? are you people for real, jeez.

    • avatar Nick says:

they are not doomed because of this cut, or the Fanica cut, OR the TJ cut, OR the Leon cut…

But HELLO, there is a cumulative effect!!

    • avatar Brad says:

Its about cutting a bunch of veteran leaders, not just T-Rich! One thing to cut one or 2 leaders, but when they get rid of 3 main leaders in T. Jones, Faneca, and T- Rich and also get rid of Leon Washington to draft McKnight whose looked awful, and then also open up negotiations with our best player in Revis and now he might not play for the season. Add to that- cutting or not bringing in other Vets making the league min so they dont have to guarantee them for the whole season in an Uncapped year looks very cheap and foolish in the eyes of the Fans- those Players being- Coles, Adalius Thomas, and now T-Rich.
The team is looking foolish with some of these moves, especially since its an uncapped year.- not the Revis move- cant give him the house! We are losing leaders, teams nead leaders!

  116. avatar Nick says:

You cannot remove every leader in the locker room and expect to win THAT year. It will take most of the season to see where the leaders will come from. In the NFL that means 9-7.

I don’t want to hear any freaking complaints from the FO about a leadership void they created. This isn’t fantasy football….does the FO understand that at all??

  117. avatar dabu says:

i frankly wanted t-rich out even before they drafted the terminator. it was only after reading the amazing piece on him in si and hearing bout him on hk that i changed my mind to wanting him to stay. but honestly, w/ regards to the team this isnt a very big deal. clearly the org thought connor would be the full time starter which means he never sees the field b/c he’s not gonna be on special teams either. only thing is cody brown vs. t-rich. whos is better for jets competitively? also does this now spell end for connor on specials. his hit in the carolina gm was insane

    • avatar phil says:

Theres more to being a FB then knocking the snot out of someone. A good FB needs to be able to understand what defense are trying to do and the angles that need to be taken to create the kind of block to spring a guy. They must be able to pick up a blitz as well as handle an outlet pass. I agree that Connor has loads of potential but we don’t know if he can read defenses yet, handle a Ravens blitz package and catch an outlet. I guess he showed enough but practice and game are 2 different situations. I hope the gamble works.

  118. avatar HHH says:

when tanny and rex where talking about t-rich first thing tanny did was looked at his salary!! not a good representation!!

  119. avatar James in TN says:

hell, i give up wtf are they thinking, we have in less than one year totally dismantled the ground in pound that got us to AFC championship. Now we have to depend on Schotty’s playcalling? We are screwed, holy @#$%!!!!

  120. avatar Nick says:

Clearly they have never heard that if it aint broke don’t fix it…

  121. avatar Joe says:

Maybe when our biggest questions all have to do with leadership issues we shouldn’t be cutting one of the most respected players in the NFL let alone the jets locker room! This better be clearing money for revis!

    • avatar Nick says:

If they are clearing room for Revis how do you think the locker room is going to feel about that? “hey, glad you got paid so much that they needed to cut all our buddies you jackass”….

  122. avatar HHH says:

jason davis is still available, he said az claim was taken back!!

  123. avatar Paul says:

Sigh.. another terrible movie by the Jets this offseason. If anybody thinks that we’re gonna resign Revis or meet halfway on his demands you’re out of your mind. We’ve been penny pinching most of this off-season and don’t tell me LT and JT were signed.. they had tiny contracts. I understand we locked up Brick and Mangold, but they got VERY LITTLE fully guaranteed money, and that seems to be what they’re obsessing over. They can’t keep Coles or T-Rich because their contracts would be fully guaranteed.. ru kidding me? Darrelle Revis will never play for the Jets again if they’re that cheap with their guaranteed money and signing bonuses.

  124. How come all of you jey fans keep naming leaders we have on the team and the all knowing rex ryan is asking for one leader

  125. avatar AKA Jack says:

Enough with the leadership. We have plenty of vets who can lead this team. Yea, we let go a wise old vet with T-Rich, we brought in a hall of fame running back during the off season who many here wrote off before he took a snap and who has been the best runner on the team this preseason. We also have Brick, Mangold, Moore and Woody on the O-line.

On D, we have the much hated Jason Taylor who says he is all about the ring. Well he has now been thrown into fire full time and he was a big time presence for the Fins, no reason to think he won’t stand up. We also have Scott, Harris, Jenkins, Ellis, Leonhard and Cro as strong veteran presences on the D.

We have plenty of leadership both on the field and in the locker room. These are all grown men, some as good as any at their position in the game. If we don’t make it this year it won’t be because of a lack of veteran leadership.

    • avatar James in TN says:

Jason effing Taylor can’t make it on time for a game much less be a leader.

    • avatar Nick says:

      AKA Jack -

Good player = Leader? I think not.

You can’t just list our quality players and say we have plenty of leadership. Some guys just aren’t vocal, and the LT and JT’s of this team are new and on the downside of their career, they are not going to lead.

  126. avatar James in TN says:

Plus we still have McSuck’s a$$ on the roster
    @#$%ing brilliant!

  127. avatar Paul says:

I’d say that it’s gonna be Sanchez that stands up and leads this team but after seeing him tear up on Hard Knocks after “sucking” in practice I think it’s safe to assume that he’s got a long way to go .

  128. I am not predicting doom i would have thought we could beat ravens and pats. but after watching hard knox and the preseason and no revis(the best defensive player in football) I just dont think they are better then the pats or ravens

  129. avatar EastSide says:

I guess what I don’t get about the T-Rich cut is that even if he split playing time 50-50 with da Terminator, how is he going to contribute less than the guys we picked up (who the FO has presumedly not even had a chance to fully workout yet)

  130. Jason taylor could care less. A leader he doesnt even looked interested. And again if we haved all these leaders why is supercoach looking for it.

    • avatar AKA Jack says:

Have you ever played a team sport? This crap happens all the time. The coaches are constantly asking for the leaders to stand up. It’s boiler plate coach speak.

Just because it happens on TV this season for the Jets doesn’t mean it isn’t happening in every other locker room in the league right now.

      • avatar Nick says:

The difference is they were talking about it behind closed doors. So it wasn’t just coach speak for the players.

Also, it’s not something that championship teams search for. Good teams…yes, young teams…absolutely, but championship teams? Because isn’t that what the JEts think they can be this year?

  131. Sanchez has shown nothing resembling a leader.

  132. I understand you guys are either undervalueing revis or just hoping he is not that important to this team . But revis is the player that gives us a victory against ravens or pats

  133. Did T Rich Play Defense ?

    Did TRich play QB?

It’s a sad day when I expect more from my dog than some of you expect from a bunch of grown a$$ football players.

Who will lead? The players with the millions in guaranteed money & the players fighting to keep their jobs. Maybe if the coach isn’t too busy he can help lead. If they ask, I’ll lead also. Who’s with me?

  134. avatar Antstiggity says:

Can some of you guys stop whining like a bunch 0f he-she’s, so what we cut a couple guys here and there.what ever happened to IN REX I TRUST. Let’s start this season already and let the team speak for itself !

  135. I also saw the offense suck in preseason sackdance99

  136. Half the defense disrespected rex on hard knox and rex even sais so. That training camp was a vacation.

  137. I love these guys who bring up playing team sports. Like anything is equal to the nfl. lol

  138. Since we havent been in a superbowl sice 1969 i think its ok for alot of us jet fans to be concerned it doesnt mean we are whining and remember rex, sanchez and especially the gm have won nothing.

  139. I read this blog everyday and post only once and awhile, really are you kidding me. all this over T-Rich? Was he a good leader? yes, was he expendable? absolutely. Its not that big of a deal. I was more upest that we kept Mcknight and relased Washington.
As Far as Revis goes. Is he Great, Of course he is, But I think our secondary with Cro,Pool,Wilson and JL is a major upgrade over last year..I just don’t see the Panic…..

  140. My worry has nothing to do with trich.Ijust dont think we are a great team. And keep undervalueing revis we will see how that works out for us.

  141. No jet fan who watched the ;preseason or hard knox could think this team will get a snff of the superbowl unless you are drinking the koolaid and blindly loyal

  142. avatar Rizzo says:

Everyone has to settle down. We still have a nasty team and everyone is still freaking out. Revis will sign, The Terminator will crush people, LT will be the new leader in the locker room, and we get Santonio back week 5 along with Pace. I think they will hold their own.

  143. avatar ezjets says:

i guess they are given up leadership with some of their moves. i felt that t. jones padded his stats against bad teams and faneca got pancaked on pass blocks so many times that IHOP should have had a special platter named after him! i was a season ticket holder for 32 years gave up my seats last season. i refuse to pay the PSL & ticket prices. Hopefully i can enjoy watching them at home this year, but leave it to the Jets brass to screw this Revis situation up! Finally draft a heck of a player amd he will wind up like playing for someone else. Go jets!
