Tannenbaum Statement On Richardson
NEW YORK–We just got the official notification from the Jets of their cuts and signings, all of which I previously wrote about.
Following is GM Mike Tannenbaum’s statement regarding the release of 16-year veteran and four-time Pro Bowler, Tony Richardson:
“Each season, there are difficult choices when constructing a 53-man roster and this year is no exception. We appreciate Tony’s contributions and leadership over the past two seasons and have nothing but the highest respect for him as a person and as a player.”

OOWWWWWWWW!
Over the line, but still great…
-
best post yet!!!

Does he do it in song ala MacFarlane?

So, the main questions surrounding the NY Cessnas are:
Who has the juice in that hangar? OR, is Rex’s mouth simply printing out a check that Tanny won’t write?
Can you win a Super Bowl on the cheap?
Who has the juice here?
Is Rex merely coaching whatever team Tanny hands him?
Or, is Tanny doing everything in his power to give Rex what he needs to be successful?
In HKs it’s been interesting to watch the friction between Rex and Tanny.
Rex clearly acts like Tanny is the boss, as he has often pleaded his case to Tanny. Last Wednesday, Tanny looked at his numbers and sounded as cold as a snake when he said T-Rich made “$850,000.” That’s a lot of dough, but it’s the Veteran Minimum! Most guys cost waaay more than that!
-
>>Rex clearly acts like Tanny is the boss, as he has often pleaded his case to Tanny.
Typically the GM is the boss!
As Rex’s success grows he will gain more clout, and Im sure he already has influence in the Jets organization.
But the GM is the boss, except in rare cases.

I understand he is just a FB and we have a solid back up…but this one kinda makes me sick
Idk what we are doing but I sure hope this money is either:
A) going to pay revis
B) going to pay revis
Or
C) going to pay revis
This should be an interesting HK
-
I know exactly what we should do.
Cut Tanny to save that money and resign Revis…
-
How can you possibly dislike Tanny after this beautiful offseason just because they (temporarily in this case) let players who lost a step go. Very little sentiment in winning, guys.
-
-
-
I just cannot believe this. Major leadership void.
-
You don’t draft a fullback in the middle of a draft, have him light it up in training camp, and then hang onto your 38-year-old starter. There isn’t a team in the league that would hang onto two fullbacks in that situation. (Can you imagine how quickly Belichick would give Richardson his walking papers?)
Stop the leadership stuff. It’s a fullback. A backup fullback, in all likelihood.
-
But we like him :(
-
-
I dont know why people are so surprised, no team this year would ever keep 2 fbs. Leadership is highly overrated, making a team of cheerleaders wont win you a championship
-
A) TJ, LW, T Rich
B)Greene, LT, Conner
Unless “A” was gonna make Sanchez a more accurate passer/decision maker, I’m gonna take “B”. But how will these grown men function in the Locker room? Lol, that’s me being sarcastic.
Tanny in the best GM in the business, plus it’s time for the(rich) kids(by kids I mean men) to step up, no worries.
-
Now that we Jet fans have priced in the run to the Super Bowl as a fact not a goal, what are folks going to be saying by November if Mark Sanchez’ eyes are spinning around in his head, WRs BE & SH are bitchin’ about attempts, LT’s legs give out and SG’s hurt? Who’s strong enough to keep this boat afloat? Who’s gonna step in and straighten MS’s head out when he’s already tuned Cav out, is starting to pout with Schotty and was too busy chewing his nails when Rex was giving his Snacks speech to really understand it?
You don’t need your leaders when things are going well (altho’ that never hurts), it’s when things are falling apart, that’s when it’s crucial to have colleagues who don’t get rattled and can calm down everyone else and get them focused.
We never deserved a playoff run last year, because we never deserved the playoffs. We played well in spurts, bad in spurts, but not well enough to be a playoff team — two things got us there: every single team we needed to roll over and die in order for us to have a shot rolled over and died. If ANY of them could have won A GAME in the last three weeks, we were out. Secondly, the veteran presence on the team held everybody together so we could take advantage of the poor play by all those other teams. Then we got hot.
Tell me, if we play .500 ball through the Bye, who’s gonna get guys to pick up their game? Who’s gonna be up in their faces?
And how the hell are we gonna get these low-paid Jonas Brothers we have on the roster now to play like Jets?
-
-
there are no veterans on this team anymore…it doesnt make sense a team needs that veteran leader to direct the team and richardson was one of those guys.ya terminator is having a great preseason but just because of that you cut a 16 year vet who was really the only leader left from last years team? im starting to think that tanny is getting a little ahead of himself in thinking that he HAS to make a move. tanny just sit back and watch the team come together.dont over think it.just watch bro.
-
No veterans? Brandon Moore? Damien Woody? LT? Kris Jenkins? Bryan Thomas? Jerricho Cotchery? Shaun Ellis? Bart Scott? Jason Taylor? How many more veterans do we need?
-
Jim Leonhard, Calvin Pace, Mark Brunell. Even Bray and Holmes has been stepping up as leaders. Sure, T-Rich was in the league longer and was more respected than some of these 14 names listed here, but to say the team lacks veterans and leaders is pretty misguided.
-
-
-
Agree with the three previous, this was a dispassionate football move, noone carries 2 FB’s and certainly not a 38 yr old one. frees up a roster spot for something else.
Screw the “leader” thing, if these guys need a leader to play to their potential, then their potential was never good enough to win anyway. They are Pro’s, they are jets, No play like Jetsand pro’s!!!
Anyone crying about a “leader’ probably never played the game beyond a HS level.-
From watching HKs, it looks like some of them think they’re STILL in HS.
-
-
The first comment is great I love it and it’s true.
-
This is really disapointing. He hasn’t been here long, but I think of him as a JET. I have to admit, I looked past a lot of the talk about the locker room and chemistry because of Richardson. He is smart guy and a true professional, hope the guy who was just dumped by another team was worth it.
-
This move was BS. I have suddenly turned from as excited as I ever could be about this season to NOT EXCITED AT ALL! The Jets are making all sorts of moves but not making any of the moves that they should be making. I know that T Rich wasn’t going to be our “starter”, but to have a guy like him as a part of our team was really AN HONOR. I just don’t agree. It’s sad really, and it makes me sick.
-
Woody is listening to the Wilpon’s on how to run your team on the cheap, make money and screw your fans big time.
-
Scary!
-
Because you want to keep a 38 year old player who has lost a step and can’t contribute on ST, just because he is a great person, that makes them cheap? It had less to do with money than the roster spot. Connor won the job, that’s life. The team is not void of leadership, everywhere you look in the locker room there are veterans and leaders.
-
-
if one leader leaves, it just helps another one step up. the team has plenty of leaders on the field just overshadowed.
-
Relax, its a FB, and a rookie clearly out played him in the preseason. Yes he was a leader, but like other posts have said, its time for others to step up, I see the void being filled by the younger guys, Mangold, and Harris on D with Scott / Leonard. Sometimes the best leaders lead by example, ie hardwork, domination, damn REVIS sign already.
-
look at the positive from this…Joe McKnight bashing is non-existence today !
-
2 FB’s would be ridiculous…. Period!
LT cant be a leader? Mangold cant lead? Woody cant lead? Um and all three are veterans as well..
Relax. The Jets will go as far as Sanchez allows them to. The defense will be a top 10 defense even without Revis. The running game will be top 10 as well.
Even with Slauson I think we will have an effective running game.
This team has what it takes, but as we know as Jets fans, the biggest obstacle this year is that we are being picked to win.As long time Jets fan (30 years) that is never a good thing….
-
Fast Forward to the Future: Nnamdi Asomungha and The Raiders of their Lost Minds, playing Jets $1,000,000,000 Island surrounded by a couple Sharks (Agents) swimming in a sea of mediocre minimum wage teammates.
Stop the insanity… You’re a Cornerback, not a Quarterback!
-
A corner that can’t score, like a Deon Sanders.
Who would you take?
Corner that on a drive, gives up 3 catchs for 45 yards but intercepts the ball and takes it to the house.
Corner that gives up zero yards but the team goes up the feild and scores.
-
-
Anyone who says that Woody is being cheap is ridiculous. 2 guys just got huge record-breaking contracts, and even if Revis took the $120 million contract, it’s not like he’s being cheap.
-
… In other words, Mr. T getting Jets younger, cheaper can not only be attributed to Conner’s great preseason; yet, also to Revis’ non attendance.
We’re robbing Peter to pay Paul. Without T- Rich in the huddle of veteran leadership, as well as a great mentorship for the kid.
Jesus, if KC didn’t take the pay cut, we’re just a few bucks away from O’Connell under center? I don’t consider Brunell anything more than a QB coach in pads.
NOTE TO DARRELL: You’re being to greedy. Look at D’Brick and Mangold. Look at all the players, we’re walking to try to pay you!
How in the Hell are we supposed to pay David Harris?
Get your ass in uniform already. Those commercials are making me sick!
-
Love t-rich and am not sure about this move, BUT the only reason any of you are bringing up the supposed leadership void is because of hard knocks. If not for that it wouldn’t even be brought up.
T-rich got terminated
-
Just in florham park. I drove by the practice facility. They have a coin toss setup and a big picture of Revis.
Faneca, Coles, Richardson…..all money saving moves…not moves to win games. Woody comes off like a tightwad, who does not value good players or good people for that matter.
Fatso franchesa is going to do a week of shows on this..great for his ratings.
-
I think the only people who believe Woody looks cheap after this offseason are the ones who listen to Mike Francesa.
-
-
How can any of you idiots say leadership is overrated. When that offense is down, and is looking ugly, who is going to bring them back up? Sanchez? I think not.
-
It certainly was not going to be the backup fullback. My guess would be Tomlinson and Damien Woody, veteran leaders who will actually be in the huddle.
-
-
SouthFloridaJetsFan,
I agree Mangold and (I would hope D’Brick) can lead. I’m just saying they haven’t. To your point they haven’t had to, ’cause we had Thomas Jones, T- Rich, Alan Fanaca.
Now, Jones and Fanaca are gone due to decline. Hopefully, Slauson’s pass blocking improves with experience as the OLine gels. His run blocking was never a question.
Obviously, T-Rich is gone, because John Conner’s was a great 5th round pick up. Only, I’m convened that he’s more of a financial casualty than a performance, roster consideration.
In other words, his departure is part of an effort to pay Revis. I hate the fact that Revis’ dirty, scumbag agents are bending Woodie, Tannenbaum, and me (the fan) over, because the have leverage.
They know it’s our make or break, Super Bowl or Bust year and we face Ravens, Patsies and Phins to start.
I hate ‘em and his god damn lazy uncle, who sucked anyway… And I’m beginning to hate Revis himself, especially those damn commercials!!!
-
Major Leadership Vacume
-
This is really disappointing. Mike T looks really bad right now to me. We saw on hard knocks how people need to step up and be leaders and now they’re cutting one of the best they have. I hope they resign him duting the season or something. These players cannot like what’s going on and I know fans hate this move too. Revis better get signed before this game and at that point it won’t be as bad…I guess.
-
You add Brown, if you cut Hunter you save a little more cash, then cutting Richardson. We carried 8 OLine last year why 9 this year…
-
-
1. 2 FB’s doesn’t make sense; especially when you’re keeping 4 TE’s – and might be running lots of 2 TE sets.
2. It doesn’t make sense to bring back T-Rich after game one to save guaranteed salary. It makes sense with LC, because he might get cut when SH returns. Ditto A. Thomas/C. Pace.
Therefore, I think this is about roster, not money.
3. They just signed Brick/Mangold to two nice contracts. Maybe all this $$$$ focus from Mike T. on HK is just posturing. But I wonder for who?
4. Interesting Brian Jackson wasn’t cut instead.
-
NJ-E-T-SFX,
I like your point (3) about Mr T posturing for public opinion while we wait out Revis.
It looks like both parties are digging in to see how Jets (sans ) fares .
Jets win games, Revis (and his dirty agents) lose their contract demands. Jets lose games, Revis (and his dirty, scumbag uncle) wins their contract demands.
Either way, the fans lose. Kinda like kids in a divorce, eh?
-
-
Outside of the freeing up money, and being outplayed by Connor… could cutting T-Rich some how give the team additional draft picks in 2011?
-
I hate this move we couldn’t figure something else out????? It very much seems like rex has no control of who comes and who goes he promises spots and it never happens.
-
TheJetsStream BREAKING: Rex Ryan & Revis met in Fla this weekend 2discuss contract impasse. No resolution yet. But lines of communication open #jets #nfl
Get Revis signed and everything will be well with the world. Or at least on this blog…
-
What is the financial impact of keeping McKnight? If they released him, what would they owe? Now that they decided to keep him, what do they owe him? Anyone know. I was not impressed.
-
Can we trade McKnight for Haynesworth?????
-
-
Sometimes I think the FO gets a little to cute with cuts and pick ups this time of year especially when it comes to team chemistry… but maybe there is a means to all this madness. Hope it is all part of getting revis on the field. Also, on HK it was evident that they were not thrilled with the talent of 2-3 depth players.. So maybe this is trying to address that… But I thought the roster was pretty good before today. They sure know more about it than we do!

**BREAKING NEWS** Jet fans the deal is all but done! Revis will be here for Monday Night against Ravens – He is meeting with Tanny tmrw
-
That guy is full of S%#T! Look at what he said about LeBron James on July 6th:
incarceratedbob WFAN & Incarcerated Bob have learned Lebron James will announce that he is signing on with the NY Knicks for 3 Years . 3 sources confirm
-
-
This moves says a lot about the jets organization. Woody is a clown who should own a polo club, not a NFL team.
-
Manish Mehta reported on his blog “Rex Ryan meets with Darrelle Revis this weekend to discuss contract impasse”
I hope that Rex can get him here like he did when he showed up at Bart Scott’s house the minute teams were allowed to talked to free agents.
-
haha good point Dylan…immediately disqualified that guy is
-
From your posts, sounds like YOU’RE still in ‘HIGH SCHOOL’..SOJetter
-
ESPN is reporting that a meeting took place…
-
… But, no deal is eminent.
-
this deal would be eminent, if it were imminent.

T-Rich signs with another team then Connor gets hurt! Then What ? TR is on a 1 year contract in a uncapped year, this makes no sense. There isn’t any high priority 2nd or 3rd back up player that we HAVE to keep. Ex., Pace is hurt and already talk about making VG standing up again. I guess the back ups aren’t good enough but then why are they on the team.
-
Do you suggest the Jets keep 106 players, because the first 53 can always get hurt?
-
Yea 106 is about right ! can u read ? we have back up players on the team that the coaches don’t have confid. in and they cut a great team player and leader. Connor can still be very important on ST and learn from one of the best.
-
-
-
For a team clearly in need of on field leadership, this is a terrible move.
Even if Conner is better and T Rich wouldn’t see the field, keep him around as a player coach.
Although I did like cutting Faneca at the time, it has proved to be a mistake, lets not make the same one again.
Maybe Rex will offer him a job on his coaching staff……
-
This team is overflowing with leaders. I don’t understand this sentiment at all.

A little background on OT Patrick Brown. The Vikings definitely wanted to put him on their practice squad again before the Jets decided to claim him.
Hope he can pass block.
“…That’s where Brown spent most of his first pro season, after getting cut by Carolina and then spending two weeks on New England’s practice squad.
“I was there long enough to get chewed out by Bill Belichick,” Brown said.
Is a chewing-out from Belichick a memorable experience? “Oh, yeah,” Brown said. “He knew my name. I was impressed by that.”
Brown underwent open-heart surgery for a jagged aorta as a 6-year-old. Sometimes, lifelong restrictions for activities are placed on a kid after that surgery. The order to Brown after his recovery was, “Get on with life.”
He became a powerful lineman for St. Charles (Ill.) North. His scholarship offers came from Texas Christian, Western Michigan and Central Florida, where he landed. Why not TCU?
“TCU was a Top 25 program, and I liked it there, but Central Florida was different,” Brown said. “The feel of the place was as though you were still going to high school.”
The head coach was George O’Leary, hired by the Orlando school after spending two seasons (2002-03) as Mike Tice’s defensive coordinator with the Vikings. “He’s a great motivator, a great coach,” Brown said of O’Leary.
Brown met another motivator — strength coach Tom Kanavy — after signing on to the Vikings’ practice squad last Sept. 29.
“As linemen, we’re lifting all the time, but Kanavy had some different things that I felt helped me a lot,” Brown said. “A rookie year is more chaos than anything. But I knew, with one year experience, you had to show a lot more. My best chance to get better as a player was to spend the offseason in his conditioning program.”
Brown showed up at Winter Park in February, a couple of weeks before the formal start of Kanavy’s program. The 6-5, 310-pounder didn’t miss a day in the offseason. He worked at left tackle in minicamp and OTAs, and at left guard and right tackle in training camp.
He has made an impression, although not universally. Asked if he had any encounters with Pat Brown, sack man Jared Allen said, “I only go against Big Mac (McKinnie). I spend my time with the ones.”
(The article seems only accessible from the Google cache.)

guys did any one of you see HK if you did you would say the jets don’t need leaders
a) the coaches said the team is lacking leaders
b) the guys were eating burgers while sraching
c) JT showing up late 3 times -

Well, to be fair, all of that was done with T-Rich on the team.

Hey… what’s the difference between a blocking TE and a FB that doesn’t run?
-
I don’t know mshanahan what?
-
All im saying is.. we couldnt trade t-rich for anything?! i guarantee sum1 is gonna pick him almost immediatly…so why not get sumthin in return, let the other team release their fb and pick him up
-
I simply don’t understand all the negativity. We’ve got a FB called “The Terminator” That is freakin awesome. Stop focusing on the negative.
-
Per Florio, he should be back today.
