Jets Sign Youtube Star Gilbert to Practice Squad

by Steiny on September 6th, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune is reporting the Jets have signed Jarron Gilbert to the practice squad. Gilbert became an internet sensation after the video above appeared on Youtube.

Jarron Gilbert has found a new home.

The Bears’ top pick in 2009 has been signed to the practice squad of the New York Jets, according to his agent Frank Bauer.

Gilbert was claimed by the Jets on waivers Sunday, but the team had a higher prioritized claim on Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marcus Dixon. The Jets were awarded Dixon and Gilbert became a free agent.

Jets coach Rex Ryan called Gilbert late Sunday to personally recruit him to the Jets and the sell job worked.

“He liked Rex Ryan because Rex had come out to personally work him out before the draft,” Bauer said. “He said, ‘Come sign on my practice squad.’ I thought I was going to bring Jarron out west, but he made the decision to go there and it’s a good one.”

The Jets run a 3-4 scheme that might fit Gilbert better. The Bears originally asked him to be an under tackle in their 4-3 defense. Then, they asked him to slim down to play left end. He dropped to 270 pounds this year on his 6-6 frame and it didn’t work out.

“That’s what Rex and I talked about,” Bauer said. “The scheme might be better for him. Let’s see what happens for the kid.”

Per Bauer, the Jets were considering Gilbert with the first pick of the third round last year. Instead, they took Iowa running back Shonn Greene, which turned out to be a smart move. Gilbert went three picks later to the Bears.

The Bears did not try to bring Gilbert back to their practice squad, choosing to cut bait. The team owes him $146,500 in a future base guarantee. Baltimore, Seattle and the New York Giants also expressed interest in Gilbert.

very nice signing. like him a lot.

man… even our practice squad is stacked. cannot wait for week 1.

  3. avatar BamBam says:

He’ll be perfect if we are playing in San Diego on MNF and they have a torrential downpour

Love this signing! This is the guy who I thought the Jets were trading up for in round 3 last year. When he bulks up again he has a good chance of being legit as a 3-4 end his better projected position in the NFL

    • avatar Brad says:

Totally agree- had the same thought in the draft too! I feel he can be the perfect replacement for Ellis- He has the size and strength to hold the point of attack against the run, with the power and speed to pressure the QB.

Rex is going to turn Gilbert into a legitimate starting DL. The kid’s athletic ability has been well documented and Rex’s ability to maximize the potential of his DL is very well known. Very excited they were able to bring him in.

The Pied Piper of NFL players marches on…..

Agree that he was highly ranked last year, but idea that Bears cut him one year after drafting him concerns me. Even if we was playing out of position, Bears wouldn’t give up on him if they thought he had any upside.

    • avatar Bent says:

He barely even got on the field, but we do know how shifting weight up and down will slow down your development (see Bryan Thomas).

He actually had two sacks in the last two games.

Interesting to see the hype here. If the Jets drafted a guy that high and he did nothing (at least Gholston got on the field), everyone would be saying he’s a bum and a wasted pick. I’m sure Bears fans would probably laugh at some of these comments.

Let’s hope there’s a spark of potential still there.

Bent, considering the number of fans that want to cut McKnight, I agree wholeheartedly. When Rex had to answer Cimini’s snarky comments about signing Patrick Turner, he said that guys often develop at different speeds. I personally loved the Turner signing. And, his experience with Sanchez and his knowledge of the Fins playbook can’t hurt. Cimini was actually giving Rex grief about Clowney, Mr. August. Cimini is such a know-nothing jerk.

          • avatar Bent says:

            Haha.

I didn’t want to draft Turner because I thought it would take him 3 years to contribute. Instead we get him for next to nothing at the start of year three? No lose situation.

Yeah, it’s the tall WRs coming out of college that have the steeper learning curve. I guess they just can’t believe a 5-10 CB has the strength to jam them on the LOS and screw up the timing of their route-running. The smaller guys have to deal with getting off the LOS or they can’t play, whether it’s college, high school or Pop Warner, so they’re always a little more NFL-ready.

I really like this, I was hoping we drafted him the other year hopefully he finds a way on the roster.

  8. avatar Grover10 says:

I remember watching Rex work him out pre draft and how impressed he was with this guy. Good luck Jarron now play like JET!

  9. avatar neauone says:

Oh, please the Bears have no eye for talent, just look at the RB’s they let walk and traded for a QB who has major issues with his personal life. This is a good pick up for the Jets.

this highlight tape is more impressive than his jumping out of the pool video

  11. avatar juunit says:

Good, we need youth on this line.

  12. avatar clint says:

well just look at kris jenkins he wasn’t that great in the 4-3 compared to how good he is at the 3-4 so hopefully itll help gilbert out.

    • avatar Paul says:

Jenkins was a 3x Pro Bowler in the 4-3. He was injured for most of ’04 & ’05 otherwise he may have had 5 Pro Bowl appearances during his time in the 4-3.

  13. avatar seanmac31 says:

A lot of recent high-round deadwood is getting cut due to the uncapped year. I wasn’t high on Gilbert at the time and I’m certainly no bigger a fan of him after he managed to get run out of Chicago so quickly. I suspect this is big news the way signing Donovan Warren was big news right after the draft. But I’ve certainly been wrong before.

  14. avatar jpizzle says:

@ Clinton Jenkins was a beast with the Panthers he also was a probowler.

  15. avatar HHH says:

I feel that God has his hands on the jets!!

  16. avatar kennydajet says:

Good signing was a fan of his coming out of college and happy he is with the Jets. Hopefully our young D lineman can really develop to be big time producers at the next level
    Mike De vito
    Ropatai Pitiotua
    Matt Kroul
    Jarron Gilbert

  17. avatar clint says:

jp yes he was but this last three years with panthers he declined but im saying hes better as a noseguard imo.

  18. avatar Brad says:

Can someone clarify the Practice Squad rules- Cant some other team taking him from us? If they taking him off our practice squad, do they have to make him part of their active roster?- isnt that how we originally got Clowney.

  19. avatar junior says:

i like this move he is gonna be on the active roster by week 6 and Devito will be gone. Cant stand Devito

  20. avatar ziggy says:

I think the FO is doing a nice job in upgrading our all around talent and potential level…gotta love our depth at QB when you look around the league and compare it to ours…

  21. avatar eboozer says:

We’ll see what Coach wants to do w Jarron. In college he looks like a rush end. He beats the blocker over and over with some nice spins and swims, shows good speed in pursuit. But the bears made him a DT in the 4-3 and didn’t like him there. He won’t abuse NFL linemen like he did in college. If he is going to play DT for the Jets, he needs to get real gritty.
Haven’t seen DeVito much in preseason, but his game is all about toughness.

  22. avatar junior says:

Jarron will be groomed to be the Defensive End in the 3-4 he is physically a good fit Devito is too small

  23. Love this kid. The jets can scout!

  24. avatar neauone says:

That door you hear closing is on Gholstons career as a NFL player.

  25. avatar iJets says:

If you freeze video at :12 there is a image of a face that appears over his left knee. weird.

  26. avatar phil says:

i was actually upset when i found out we had a higher priority on Dixon then Gilbert….now we get to see both….with Gilbert taking the last ps spot and Jackson soon to be cut to make room for Revis, who do we let go? Gay?
