Link: NYT Mag Article on Rex

The New York Times has a great article about Rex Ryan from the NY Times Magazine that’s well worth the read.

… Ryan is so different from coaches then, and coaches now, that it’s like encountering Jeff (the Dude) Lebowski in the senior partners’ elevator. For this football Falstaff, the better part of valor is always valor. “We expect to win the damn Super Bowl,” he says. “Period. Anything less than a Super Bowl will be a disappointment.”

It’s a great look into Rex, his life, his bravado, his shortcomings, and his attic tenant. Again, well worth the read to know more about the man.

Thanks to Ben Nevis for sending this in.

    Great and long article.
I was most interetsed in the part that says Rex can see all 22 players at once on film whereas most coaches just see a 2-3 players at a time.

Am I the only one that realize the meaning of the first game vs Ravens if we beat them!! Boy iMa be happy!!

    • avatar Zartan says:

Yep, it’s almost make or break. Beat them, we break the camals back and run all over the season. Lose and we dog fight for playoff spot.

Ravens are tuff but getting old.

RavensInsider Cut by the New York Jets this week, cornerback Brian Jackson is joining the New York Giants’ practice squad, per a league source.

1-Revis Signing. We may even footage along the lines of an agreement happening first hand.
2-Preseason Finale with our backups(Expect to see the Gholston sack again)
3-Final Cuts which will be a big story.releasing Clowny should be interesting and the whole TRich release and signing him back will be interesting to see.
4-Reaction of Revis returning to practice.Should be funny to see a segment with Revis is discuise with a Wig.
5-Calvin Pace injury. They didn’t really talk much about his injury and should hear some good news from him on the show about his fast recovery.

not that i really give a f@&# what other people think, but if fans around the league read this maybe they’d understand better why we love Rex. And if not they too can go f@&# themselves.

I put this on the thread about Rex cursing but it really belongs here:

Great article. Lots of goodies besides M&Ms. Backgound that gives insight into foreground, what we see today. Watch the Emmy winning movie, “Temple Grandin”, about an autistic child with exceptional qualities and that gives insight into Rex’s dyslexia giving him the ability to see the whole field. He’s a mental freak like “Rain Man” who can count cards whereas Rex can see what 22 men are doing at once on the football field whereas the rest of us can barely watch 2 at a time.

Then comes a successful man who loves people and can’t spell. He’s not perfect, he’s just a man you can love.

Check out the article and meet our coach.

Outstanding article. I loved how he re-arranged his neighbor’s face while wearing flip flops. LOL!

  13. avatar Gordon says:

Wow….that is a really well written article on Rex. Worth the read. Insightful stuff.

I love this man and after reading this article I think I like him more than my own father. haha.

You know you have the right man when he has people leaving their jobs to work for him and only wanting to work for him.

I just can’t see a way we don’t SUPER things this year.

Where can I watch Hard Knocks on line my jet family please help I’m working all night. I normally wait until the morning but I can’t for the one.

  16. avatar iJets says:

    Dear Dungy…

“Being upbraided for swearing around football players strikes Ryan as a little prim. “I’m not a perfect person, never claimed to be,” he says. “Tony Dungy loves Michael Vick. I never tortured or killed animals. I’m an animal lover! I used a few cuss words! At the end of the day, no matter what, I’ll walk out the door and say I always was who I am.” ”

    so nah !!!

  17. avatar geoff says:

great article. read the whole shebang. i know more now and im thankful.

  18. avatar Led says:

The article was a more than a little fawning and somewhat embarrassing. I like Ryan a lot, but the article is unlikely to change many minds about him. It’s a ballwashing.

  19. avatar Scouse Jet says:

Have I misread here? Good for Rex, I wonder who he was talking about:

“Another player, extravagantly well muscled, comes into view, a cloud passing before the sun. “I’d just as soon move on without him,” Ryan mutters. “He’s into something. Roid monster. He shouldn’t look like that.”

    • avatar Ranger Rob says:

      I was wondering this too.

    • avatar WOJF says:

Was thinking T Jones, but they said it was late spring and he was gone by then.

      Gholton?

      • avatar Bent says:

Hopefully, it’s someone they got rid of.

“I’d just as soon move on without him” doesn’t really sound like Gholston, because it conflicts with how excited Rex has been every time he’s shown progress. Also, from my locker room experience in the middle of last year, he didn’t really look all that jacked up – there were others that had more of a bodybuilder physique than he did.

Hopefully it’s someone they’ve already got rid of.

  20. avatar aed says:

Great article, but I was also extremely surprised that Rex would tell a writer he thinks one of his players is roided up. If the writer reveals the name of the player that would cause all sorts of problems.

    • avatar Scouse Jet says:

It’s just hear say though isn’t it.
I guess the fact it wasn’t mentioned who it was is all about journos respect for Rex and not wanting to get him in trouble and not wanting to get a young player who didn’t make the squad suffer unnecesarily

  21. avatar WOJF says:

Terrific but VERY long article, I printed it and kept it for later.
