Best news so far of the day? Wayne Chrebet is going to blog this season for the NewYorkJets.com site every Thursday. Here’s his first swing at it.
The 1998 season, Bill’s second, was a lot like this season … [t]hat season, expectations were high. A lot like this year. Bill changed the whole persona of the team and the franchise. We had a good team and people knew it. And we knew it.
[…]
We had an older team. We played with a tremendous amount of confidence. We knew we could win every game. So does the 2010 team. So do the fans.
Here’s the difference. This team has swagger. People can say they’re cocky, say we haven’t won anything since 1968. All that doesn’t matter. We had teams when I played that we didn’t look forward to playing. We knew we could win, but we knew we had a tough day in store for us.
The 2010 Jets are that team. Rex laid the foundation last year. A foundation that said this isn’t the same old Jets.
Awesome to see Wayne’s thoughts on the Jets site. This team has the horses, has the swagger and in my mind is more talented than even that ‘98 team. I know we’re just around the corner, but this seaso can’t get here quick enough for me.
Cap tip to gr33n for the heads up!

I was more confident in ’98 then I am now. I like Mark Sanchez but he’s still raw and prone to acts of sheer stupidity. Maybe that guy we saw down the stretch is the real Sanchez but in the pre-season I saw him throw too many passes into double coverage. Hopefully, things will change when he has the structure of a game plan. If not, there are going to be a lot of shattered Jets fans.

I agree. Nacho should’ve been playing in the 4th preseason game. I’m just shocked at how he “wants” to be a leader.
Never ever heard Tom Brady or Peyton Manning say I want to lead my team.

Chrebet on fans booing:
I know how they feel. I grew up going to the Stadium and scalping tickets once or twice a year with my father. So I heard the boos. I am ashamed to say that I booed, too. Not for the Jets, of course, just the Giants. I’m lying, but who cares at this point?

The 98 team was far more talented at the QB position with Foley and Testaverde and at RB with Curtis Martin.
Jets fans are born, not made.

I sure hope this is not like 1998. The season ended in the first quarter of the first game when Vinnie went down. In 1997 Vinnie was as good at quarterback as anyone ever.

you might have been a chiefs fan back then charleyjet.
97 ended with a leon johnson pass for an int in Detroit.
98 ended with the entire team falling apart in the 2nd half in the afc championship game.
99 ended 8-8 with ray lucas filling in for a hurt Vinny T and a pile of poo known as Rick Mirer.

I just got in a great mood reading Wayne’s blog, never loved any jet like I loved him and now have him along for the ride saying that he thinks this team reminds him of their 98 team but better. Anyone else feels this is BY FAR the most they’ve ever been excited for opening day?

I was at the Vinny game against the Patriots in 1999. I was ten years old. That scar’s never gone away.

Yea 99 still hurts….mirer was horrible!….I remember tupa had a better qb rating…lol….if parcells woulda turned to Lucas earlier we coulda went 9-7…..I think that was enough for playoffs…..sigh

man if we beat the ravens the whole league is not gonna want any part of us!!
