GAME RECAP: A TALE OF TWO PITIES
Rex Ryan has an idea how NFL teams ought to play defense. Step 1: Play hard and aggressive. Step 2: Whenever possible, ATTACK! Step 3: Challenge the opponent to respond to what you are doing. Step 4: When you hit ‘em, smash ‘em in the mouth and knock their teeth in. Step 5: Keep it simple. Step 6: Return to step 1. It’s simple and direct. The kind of thing you can teach to a rookie. It’s instinctive, and it works. Mike Westhoff has got a similar idea of how to play special teams. Westhoff and Ryan are a perfectly coherent pair. If football were played only on defense and special teams, the Jets would have won last night by thirty points against the Baltimore Ravens in their home opener, instead of losing 10-9 in heartbreaking fashion. But they didn’t win and that’s because NFL teams also play on offense and the Jets’ offense hasn’t got a clue.
Do they have a rookie quarterback? Nope. Not enough talent at wide receiver? Nope. Not enough talent at running back? Nope. A poor offensive line? Nope. Do the players know the system? You’d have to think so after all this time. Was the opponent the ’85 Bears? Not really. None of these weaknesses plagued the Jets. So why did they go 60 minutes with only six first downs and no third down conversions? Well, if the way the defense and special teams play, is playing like a Jet, then the offense is playing like a World War I biplane—a broken one.
Just for a minute, let’s remember the way Rex’s defense plays and design an offense. What would it do? Step 1: Play hard and aggressive. Step 2: Whenever possible, ATTACK! Step 3: Challenge the opponent to respond to what you are doing. Step 4: When you hit ‘em, smash ‘em in the mouth and knock their teeth in. Step 5: Keep it simple. Step 6: Return to step 1. How does the Jets’ offense actually play? Step 1: Try to ram the ball into the teeth of the defense. Step 2: Waste the talents of all your skill players. Step 3: Never challenge the opponent to respond to what you are doing. Step 4: On every play, make the pre-snap movement so intricate that it uses up the clock even with less than a minute left in the game. Also, make the movement so complicated that your own players don’t always know where they should be. Step 5: Take your instinctive, gunslinging, 23-year old quarterback who loves to play, and make him so cautious that he checks down on every snap. Step 6: Never throw down the field except when the pre-snap movement has already produced a flag for illegal shift. Oh and by the way, ignore the first down marker, even on fourth down, even at the end of the game where you only need another half yard to keep a game-winning drive alive.
Can anyone convince me why a head should not roll after this dung-stain of a football game? If I was the offensive coordinator, I’d blow my brains out. Brian Schottenheimer has absolutely no excuses. This was the worst performance I have ever seen from a Jets’ offense. That’s too limiting. From an NFL offense. Six first downs the entire game. I’m told that’s a record for futility for the Jets. One third down conversion, in eleven chances. One hundred seventy-six net yards. The defense and specials gave the offense the ball with fantastic field position, time and time again. On average, their drives began at the 45 yard line (Baltimore at their own 18). The defense forced a fumble on the Baltimore eleven yard line on the opening play of the game. Three and out. Another turnover gave the Jets the ball inside Baltimore’s forty. Three and out. Cromartie intercepts and runs it back to the Baltimore 31. Two and out as Shonn Greene fumbles for the second time. Finally, down only by 4 in the fourth quarter, the offense gets the ball on the Baltimore 35. Three and out. Did I mention that they were not playing the ’85 Bears. Everyone knew the Ravens had weaknesses in the secondary. Was there a game plan to exploit that weakness? Was there a game plan?
The first half was, by any standard, a slugfest—not between the Jets and the Ravens—but between the Jets and Walt Anderson’s crew of officials who called the Jets for 100 yards of penalties, several of which saved Ravens’ drives. A holding penalty against Kyle Wilson was the most egregious since it was away from the play, barely a grab, and it was on a 3rd and 28. I realize that this crew of officials is known for calling lots of receiver-favoring penalties, but this was ridiculous. The league can simply not permit a single crew of officials to be so one-sided in their interpretation of the rules compared to the other crews. Moreover, if the league is happy about all the publicity they’re getting from the Jets (and every NFL advertisement these days features Mark Sanchez), then they had better get this corrected. The Jets play defense and the rules have become so heavily in favor of the receiver, that they stifle any natural fairness in the encounter between the receiver and the defender. Put that together with an aggressive, offense-favoring crew and you’ve got a game that loses all its playfulness.
Commissioner Goodell, I saw you in the stands. Is this the kind of football you want—an overenthusiastic crew of martinets in stripes, affecting play more than the other team? Is this the football equivalent of judicial activism? The tally on the Ravens 76 yard drive that ended with a one yard touchdown run by McGahee? Ravens 7 yards. Officials: 69 yards including a nullified field goal which was about as lame a call as I’ve seen. You decide.
But, the game didn’t turn on the officials. If the Jets had done one positive thing on offense, they would have won. One decent drive. Hell, I would have been happy with one throw down field. These officials were just waiting to call a penalty on the defensive backs—any defensive backs. If the Jets had challenged the Ravens and their weak corners, they would have gotten the calls, too. Not these Jets.
LT was a bright spot. Shonn Greene was as mess dropping a chance at redemption on the final drive. Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery went to Sonic, where theymet Dustin Keller who overslept. Slauson played ok, but got blown up at a critical moment in the fourth quarter by Haloti Ngata, who blew past him like he wasn’t there. Tony Richardson, sadly, seemed overmatched. The Terminator’s day is coming.
On defense, Kyle Wilson got burned repeatedly, mostly by Boldin, but Revis got burned a lot, too, in his first year. Can’t blame the kid. Boldin’s a Pro Bowler and a veteran. Cromartie’s technique needs improvement. He repeatedly didn’t get his head around when he was in position to make a play on the ball. Instead, he made plays on the receivers. Brian Thomas and Sean Ellis played really well and there were several promising sightings of Jason Taylor. Jimmy Leonhard played pretty well but was late over the top on a Boldin long-gainer and failed to cover Heap in the fourth quarter which would have left the Ravens in a bad spot. The run defense was stout, even without Kris Jenkins who left the game early with pain in his knee. Ugh!
I hate to say it, but at this point, Mark Sanchez should not be starting because he’s so afraid of throwing downfield or taking a sack and fumbling that the team cannot develop any rhythm or put the opposing defense under stress. Still, we can’t blame Sanchez. He’s a great kid with a lot of talent. The blame will have to lay elsewhere. Fact was, the team didn’t show up on offense. Whose fault was that?
You know what I think.

who cares lets put this game behind us its the first game look KC is beating SD 21-7 so bid deal the defense is awesome and the offense has to step up we will win next week.and all will be forgotten we will get our revenge when we see the rsvens in the AFC game at the new jets stadium
-
Hey Nacho, throw the ball downfield or go back to watching plays and playing with rainbow ponies.Hey rex, your offense is soft. I can’t root for a team with an outstanding defense and a pu**y QB. Rex you gotta take over the offense and hand them some balls.
-
They took their biggest pair away when they got rid of Thomas Jones and Alan Faneca.
Seriously, this offense has no leader.
-
Oh please. The reporters in Arizona are saying Faneca is washed up.

Verdict: Schotty still sucks, Dustin Keller still sucks, Antonio Cromartie is still not the second coming of Revis, Kyle Wilson is a rookie, this defense needs better safeties, those officials were terrible. But they still could’ve won despite all of those things, except Schottenheimer. Schottenheimer sucked last season, and he still sucks this season. In fact, he might even be worse than last season. What is up with all the running around pre-snap crap? Who are they fooling? Themselves. Unfortunately, we’re stuck with Schottenheimer all season long. Firing him now wouldn’t work very well. The offense would have to adjust to a new coordinator. So we’re stuck with this crap. And the worst part? They’re just going to say that they couldn’t run the ball because the Ravens have a good run defense. So next week, they’ll just go back to ground and pound and hope it works. The sad thing is, the defense could’ve played better and they might’ve won. But again, this is completely on the offense. The defense was stuck on the field ALL GAME LONG. Way to go Schottenf***er.
-
I really think we should bench Sanchez. He needs to learn more about the intricacies of an NFL offense. Then he can learn first hand from a vet like Brunell or even Clemens. Too much pressure on Sanchez that he’s almost afraid to fail.
Has any other young QB have had as much pressure put on themselves like Sanchez with all this SB talk? I’m hard pressed to find another example.
-
Yes, the O sucked and sucked big time. And Sanchez looked handcuffed and afraid to throw the ball downfield. But was this MS’s fault alone? No the line gave up way too much pressure, especially against a three-man rush, when the Ravens dropped seven. And Schotty had no answer for this whatsoever.
Yes, the D looked good, especially against the run, keeping Ray Rice to 2 yards per rush. But Cromartie is not a shutdown CB. And I don’t know why Rex didn’t keep Revis on Boldin all game. Boldin was too much for Cro and too much for Wilson.
Also LT was solid, but Shonn was just plain awful.
And those penalties were ridiculous.
-
That should have been: when the Ravens dropped eight into coverage, the O line gave up way too much pressure. And Schotty had no answer for this whatsoever.
-
-
yes AFC championship jets and ravens rex gets his revenge.I put any thing on that.
-
the author of this post needs to step away from the ledge. we were in the game until the very end. its not like we got dismantled by a superior team. what would make this loss worse to stomach would be if jenkins is out for the year. it did not look good when he came off the field. i am hoping for the best for big jinx
-
Agreed. It’s one game, and it’s not like Sanchez threw 5 picks. If it were not for a few drops (Greene, Keller, Cotch), penalties (notably the illegal motion on the long negated pass play), and lapses in protection (Slauson, Woody), they probably win the game.
Do the reins need to be loosened? Definitely.
But this was a stout D (if not the ’85 Bears) and Sanchez’s decision making was pretty solid, I thought.
Everyone on O needs to take it up a notch from here, or the Jets could start digging themselves a hole.
-
if, if, if…no excuses. they lost a very winnable game with a franchise-worst display of offensive ineptitude.
Sanchez looked more confident and capable in his very first NFL game than he does now.

Disgusting. Thoughts:
1. Revis should have held out for a billion dollars. After tonight’s debacle from Cro and KW, he would have had it.
2. Why wasn’t Revis on Boldin EVERY SINGLE PLAY?
3. I have never been so disgusted with our offense. Sanchez didn’t even look past the first down marker all game (with the exception of the DK play which was negated by #4)
4. Braylon Edwards. WTF? No concentration, and a crucial mistake on special teams. Another great game from this clown.
5. Personally, I love when my teams talk. But they better walk the walk.On a completely random topic (something I think about every year)…
How has Schotty survived for so long. I don’t think the offense has ever even been in the top half under his control.
Just putrid.
-
They even admitted that was a stupid call on Edwards on that. Its really a dumb call, and should be taken away. It wasnt his fault. What if he blocked it and the kicker went down? Does that same rule apply?
-
correct Dave

brian schottenheimer is the only person who can stop the jets
-
ITS NOT SHOTTY FAULT!! U PUSH MARK TOO MUCH HE THROWS INT….
-
-
EVERYONE SAID ITS PRESEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I have said it before, Sanchez needs a new and very good QB coach. The offensive play calling was simply offensive and I start to doubt Brian Schottenheimer.Sanchez looked lost and so did every other offensive player.
And I suspect that there is something wrong with Rex’s formula. He has to stop looking at statistics and start feeling the game! -
The thing that worries me the most is if Jenkins is out for the year again. The D will be very good without him, but with him they’d be great. Just seeing how disappointed he looked makes me think this may be the last we’ll ever see of Kris Jenkins in the NFL.
-
Attending this game was one of the worst experiences of my life. And I got on the damn field at halftime for the Green Day concert. However, that coolness was counteracted by the hour and a half it took to get into the parking lot and to find a spot, then the fact that to be on the field required missing the entire second quarter, without even radio broadcasts. Then the already stupid escalator layout was made worse by the fact that they were forcing people onto the concourse to go around to the next escalator, which is a blatant fire hazard. Woody should have paid each and every one of us to watch that dreck, not the other way around.
-
It was the playcalling that was to blame, I find it hard to believe that Sanchez didn’t want to gun it down field, I believe schotty didn’t have confidence and stuck to an extremely conservative and ineffective gameplan
-
+1
It is the play calling and There was a brief talk with Sanchez and Shotty where you can see Sanchez did not like the play calls he was being told to do.
Here is the thing, Shotty is a good play caller when it comes to the run,but he is not a passing Coordinator.Maybe Shotty can worry about making the Run calls and Sanchez can worry about the pass plays.Sanchez needs more freedom and we lost today because it was clear Sanchez was afraid to throw an interception.Sometimes you need to take risks to win in this league.
-
-
Shocked? Really?
Unicorn screensavers? Stink bombs? Putrid play in the preseason. Continued putrid play in the preseason.
Sanchez needs to be benched.
1:44 and his body language SCREAMED, I don’t want to win this game.
-
+ 1 MILLION.. except for benching him part!!
-
He’s clearly better than Brad Smith.
-
-
-
Any reason Revis shouldn’t have been on Boldin the entire game??? By far the Ravens most dynamic receiver…Mason would have been a much easier assignment for the rook.
-
Because he’s not a slot corner and cannot cover every receiver on every single play.
-
-
It’s just concerning that they’ve hammered into Sanchez’s head that he needs to check down. Obviously, when everyone is covered you do that. But after only two seconds, he was throwing little passes to the running backs that were usually off target. So not only was he eliminating any passes down field, he was placing the running backs he was relying on in bad positions.
Shonne Green was definitely the biggest disappointment for me. I was expecting him to be like he was in the playoffs. Instead he played like he did at the beginning of last season when he couldn’t hold on to the ball. That was terrible on his part and I was glad he was held accountable. On the other hand, you would think that he would have been able to help an offense that was literally able to do nothing.
Also, the fact that Keller was not involved is just a joke. I don’t know whether it is the offensive coordinator’s fault or Sanchez’s, but he needs to be the guy you check down to. He’s big and physical. He can actually make a big play out of nothing. Plus, the only drive where the Jets had any success this preseason was the one where Keller got nearly every pass. I just don’t understand how he could be so overlooked.
My only concern with the defense is how Rex wouldn’t back away once from his crazy all-out blitzing on 3rd and long after they had burned so much. I thought that he might put more people in coverage because clearly what they were doing wasn’t working. In the end, it didn’t cost us too much because we only gave up 10 points; and those can be attributed to the penalties. But still, I’d like to think that when something is not working at all, Rex would consider changing for even a series or two.
One last thing; if Cromartie plays like he did today the rest of the season we won’t even finish above .500. He was a joke today.
-
Wait… he had one fumble.
Sanchez played a lot worse and kept playing.
-
-
I was at the game and the refs were killing me with the touchy calls. Defense played great in my opinion even with giving up 282 yards. Not bad for being on the field for 38 minutes. We had a positive turnover ratio which was good. Sanchez didn’t throw a pick. But I agree with Andrew that the play calling was horrendous and Sanchez is nervous to throw down field because Shottenheimer is a moron. His offense is so predictable. I heard on the 5th quarter show that Ryan didn’t make the decision to bench Greene. As a HC he has to tell Shottenheimer to shut the hell up and leave Greene in there. LT def played well, but the confidence of Greene just dropped for not being played.
This game was a tough one and we had chances to win and didn’t capitalize. The pass to Keller that was called back for a penalty was nice. Sanchez made some good throws. We just gotta get ready for New England on Sunday and throw the damn ball down field and keep running the ball. Only 1 game still got 15 more to play.
-
How bout that running into the kicker penalty, eh? cost the Jets the game! lol well that and every other thing
-
14 penalty 38 min on the field and only gave up 10 points we must see something positive about this team. and thats without jenkins .and that call on edwards was funny greene fumble after cromartie intercepted the ball to have to go play defense again. hey we just need to get the offense going better and it will .benching green after the fumble killed his confidence shotte dont know what he is doing.maybe callahan can come in and help.
-
Does anyone else think that Rex should have challenged that punt return in the 2nd half – it was safety based off of me pausing it on my DVR.
-
OK, tonight assued me were a good team, (save the laughter) First odd when sanchez had over .5 seconds to throw the ball i thought he did an excellent job, why do you all bloame sanchez for checking down all game? didnt you want him to do this all offseason? all of you are hypocrites….He “managed” the game the way he was supposed to…w\btw wilson looked exactly like revis dis his rookie year…great coverage but never turned his head around,,btw…pettine…Revis needs to be on boldin!!!!!
-
There’s a difference between playing it safe, and checking down to LR for 4 yards at your own 20 with a minute left in the game.
Listen, Schotty really f’d it up. Sanchez threw down field once and threw a beauty to keller that was brought back, then he never went down field again. Brad Smith came in and ran for 20+ yards then rode the bench for the rest of the game. They never pushed the envelope in a game that only took 1 play to win. Their offense is basically everything their defense isn’t.
-
8 pass defenders against 3 wide receivers (2 of them possession receivers) = check downs.
Should he have thrown it into triple coverage? I mean, come on.
-
-
Again… Revis isn’t a slot cb. Not all wideouts can play the slot, Boldin can. Actually all the wideouts on the Ravens can lineup in the slot.
See Braylon in the slot…. rarely. He’s not a slot receiver.
Sanchez didn’t manage the game. He played not to lose.
-
-
Sanchez needs to throw down the field. Don’t blame Braylon for being aggressive on special teams. Lousy call, like many others.
The play calling was horrendous, but the execution wasn’t there at times, either. Probably good to get humbled like that in game one — they have a lot of work to do.
-
To who? When they are dropping 8 into coverage, who do you throw it to? We have 3 Wideouts on the active roster, and only 1 can stretch the defense.
-
-
How about the secondary? I’m terrified of what Brady is going to do to us next week. Cromartie had a pic but looked horrible, Wilson was burned the entire game. Every third down it seemed they converted when they went the air route.
-
Revis has to cover Welker. He just has to.They may have to double coverage Moss if that what it takes to keep the ball out of his hand.I thought despite playing good, we put Wilson in a bad spot by letting him cover Boldin.Revis pretty much made Mason a non issue.
-
-
Whoa, it’s the first game. It was terrible yes, but there are 15 games left to play. It makes it worse because we were all so amped for tonight after all of the moves and Hard Knocks and then they put up a huge stinker. But they have the talent to win, a lot, if they decide to use it. It’s not the end of the season. There is a lot of work to do this week for the coaching staff.
-
Doesn’t Sanchez practice against one of the best D’s in the league. How does he not get better when he went through a whole training camp basically playing the Ravens D with better CB’s!
-
He spent preseason and training camp perfecting practical jokes and telling Bart Scott to shut up.
He might be the biggest joke in the league.
-
-
The Ravens dropped 8 and rushed 3 (and got good pressure with those 3). When you drop 8 you CANT THROW THE BALL DOWNFIELD!!!!
All this talk of “just throw it downfield” is ridiculous. WE ONLY HAD 3 RECEIVERS ON THE ACTIVE ROSTER!!!
I REPEAT: 3 RECEIVERS ON THE ACTIVE ROSTER!!!! That leaves you with nothing BUT checkdowns. It would have helped if the receivers didn’t drop the ball.
So, let’s do the math, 3 wide outs + a TE + a RB against 8 defenders in coverage = checkdowns.
-
Shouldn’t run work well then?
-
Yes, but the focused on what the scouting report said: run between the guards — but it didn’t work well. When the ran stretches it seemed effective, but they barely went there. They stayed dedicated to running between the guards only.
But, even more, on third downs they were in good position to run screens and draws, and we saw 1 attempted screen, and 0 draws.
Imagine that.

Schottenheimer should have been fired with Mangini.

Plus there were too many bad calls to count. When I read the article about the officiating crew before the game, I knew it was bad news.
-
what report? There were a ton of BS Calls in that game that should have not been called.
-
The one on here about the same crew calling a bunch of penalties last year against the Ravens….

Some of the blame also lies in how Rex Ryan mishandled Kyle Wilson in the preseason. He totally set this kid up to fail. By putting him in the starting lineup, he limited the kid’s reps for the first three games, and then didn’t play him at all in the 4th game. Worse, they then stuck him in the slot, which is far different than playing outside, when he had never even practiced let alone played this position in his entire football career prior to six days before the opener. On top of that, they asked him to also return punts when, again, he had returned exactly zero punts the entire preseason. When you add all that up, you get a meltdown game that included two hideous penalties, several receptions, and a fumbled punt.
-
Brilliant assessment. Not once did the idiots on ESPN mention that.
-
-
Even more, of our 3 receivers on the active roster, 2 of them are possesion receivers (Brad Smith and Cotchery). Only 1 can stretch the field (Edwards) and the Ravens were dropping 7 or 8 into coverage, while putting decent pressure on Sanchez with only 3 or 4 rushing the QB.
That leaves only a checkdown to throw it to, at best. So who is a QB supposed to throw it to?
-
Well I came up from FL and I just got back to NYC from the game what crap!!! The offense look like **** it was like Sanchez was afraid to throw the ball and Greene look like **** . I was not expecting this at all I hope they have a much better game plan for the Patriots!!! Well goodnight and go JETS!!!
-
Schottenheimer and the refs are the reason they lost this game. The whole world is gunna blame Sanchez for this loss but in reality he made what? 2 bad throws? gimme a break. He was throwing to the checkdowns because 1) thats what the coaching staff wants him to do and 2) Schottenheimer call’s the p*ssiest plays i have ever seen. Also the officiating was an absolute joke. The refs were foaming at the mouth to throw their flags. Sure Cromartie and Wilson looked a little confused but that was amplified by the fact that the refs called ridiculous penalties. In the end this is one loss, by one point, to one of the “elite teams” in the NFL and it’s week one. If they lose by one point by playing like absolute **** on offense then they’ll come around. This is arguably the most talented team in the NFL. Mark Sanchez is an intelligent, young, developing quarterback and we’ve seen he can play at a high level (the playoffs). Once they realize that Schottenheimer is too restricting the offense will come around and they will be a force to be reckoned with. They’re too good to lose like this.
-
Couldn’t agree more.
-
Body language spoke volumes about Sanchez confidence right now.
Sanchez looked unprepared and rusty. Which is the way he looked in every single preseason game.
-
-
I can’t watch 15 more games of this, when it came time to put up or shut up on national TV the Jets screwed the pootch( or maybe a rainbow pony)
-
run a draw
-
Albert haynesworth anyone?
-
Gotta love the people who see the Jets run 4 receivers (only 1 can stretch the field) to the Ravens 8 pass defenders complaining that he should have pushed the ball downfield and not checked it down.
Yeah, he should have just forced the ball to Braylon Edwards who is being double teamed, right?
-
If 8 drop back, shouldn’t we with our O-line be able to run better than we did?
-
Yes, but Schotty kept calling runs between the guards. How many runs did you see to the outside?
How many attempted screens? 1?
How many draws? 0?
-
-
-
That was about as bad an offensive performance as you will ever see. Im hoping to have something up tomorrow looking at just how bad our guys did as a team. I already looked at the offense and the pass game was even worse than the stats made it out to be.
-
I am not disgusted. Losing a game by 1 point is disheartening, but the issue here is clearly the play-calling. I’m sorry, but when a run doesn’t work on 3rd and short the first time you try it, generally you might consider trying something different the next time you’re on 3rd and short. We all have seen Sanchez play competently, and we’ve definitely seen flashes of being able to sling it. Game-planning for teams should really be simple in concept, “exploit their weaknesses”. Their weakness was their secondary, and we tried to exploit their strength. Bad job Schotty, and bad job Refs.
-
Cro is acting like a pigeon. Shonn Greene has got to stop smoking that stuff….change the offense’s battery, the hands are sticking. That BAL kicker is a real female dog’s bottom. He should get spat on. In the first week of ESPN’s ELIMINATOR FANTASY FOOTBALL CHALLENGE I already got knocked out……..San Francisco 49ers actually lost to the Seattle Seahawks……..In some ways I’m happy, the NFL is truly competitive and everyone has a chance at doing something spectacular.
-
JasonLaCanfora
Kris Jenkins will have his MRI @9am on his injured knee but for now Jets doctors optimistic its not an ACL. Jenkins left game in 1st Qtr
-
Great recap! You pretty much spoke my mind. Its kind of hard to blame the officials too much for their calls against the secondary, when we didn’t even test the Ravens secondary! In all likely hood, we probably would have gotten the same calls. I think the same crew called TEN pass interference calls on the Ravens last year. Their interpretation of the rule might be a joke, but they definitely aren’t biased. They call pass interference on EVERYBODY! Its dumbfounding that the Jets wouldn’t even test the Ravens weak secondary, which is known for being overaggressive. I guess thats what happens when your QB is so scared to throw a pick that he doesn’t trust his arm. Sanchez made a lot of mistakes last year, but he always looked like he wanted to make a play, no matter how badly he had been playing. You want your QB to make smart decisions, but you can’t take away his “IT” factor. He needs to be allowed and encouraged to play his position. Turnovers suck. But its really not all that much worse than going three and out and punting every single time.
-
REX NEEDS TO TAKE SCHOTTY OUT BEHIND THE BACK SHED AND WHOOP HIS F’N A$$.
-
You’d think that with a defense of this caliber, capable of such dominance, the offense would have the green light to air it out. To spread it out. Take a shot. But not a chance. Predictable formations. Ineffective play design. Ultra-conservative playcalling. In the interest of fairness, can’t put it ALL on Schotty when your anticipated bread-and-butter, smash mouth tailback fumbles twice on four carries with a drop. What a wretched performance by Shonn Greene. But shame on Schotty for failing to make any effective adjustments. Disgusting.
-
Ummm…
1) You can’t blame this game on Sanchez. Last year it wasn’t that he was afraid of throwing down the field it was that he was making poor decisions: looking down the receiver, trying to seem the ball in double coverage, trying to make a play when he should have just thrown it away. It wasn’t that Sanchez was afraid to throw the ball it was just that he was always trying to make the perfect play instead of holding the ball. That can be said too about when he would run the ball himself as well, looking more for the team to get the extra yard rather than his health. He’s a team first QB and in that mindset you have to believe that he’s first priority is for the team to score as many points as possible.
That being said the Jets barely threw it tonight. Of those throws more than half were little slants which were about 5 yards from Sanchez to the receiver. There was no Ed Reed on this secondary. One of Baltimore’s CB’s was also injured. Their secondary was depleted. What we saw was Brian Schottenheimer and his incompetence. Every year we overlook Schottenheimer. He made a lot of terrible play calls tonight…
The reason i’m blaming Schotty and not Sanchez comes from the entire offensive display tonight, especially the last drive. On one play Sanchez and Schotty can be seen arguing the play call, not on the same page. It looked like Sanchez was questioning the play that Schotty had just called… and rightfully so. Sanchez wasn’t given the opportunity to throw downfield. On the night i only saw one throw where Sanchez was given the opportunity to throw down the field… AND IT WAS TURNED BACK BECAUSE OF A HOLDING PENALTY.
Which leads me to my next segment. The refs were atrocious. What was even more hideous? Antonio Cromartie’s playing. He was almost always beaten. Some plays he allowed the catch to happen, others he took a bad penalty. It was never ending. Wilson was almost the same. It kind of seems to me like Revis holding out hurt Wilson’s play. Instead of being able to learn from Revis this summer he took to Cromartie and it really showed tonight. Both got beat in the same ways, both took costly penalties.
My next point: The O-Line and the running game.
It’s kind of hard for Sanchez to be successful when his pocket is collapsing rapidly. Slausen did an OK job, D-Brick looks to have lost a step, and Woody takes penalties at the worst possible times. It’s kind of disappointing that this team let go of Faneca with the success the O-Line had last year. The running was also not performing either. Maybe it was nerves but Shonn Greene can’t be coughing up the ball like that. And then! to bench him?! What in the world… What is this punishment tactics? At the end of the day he’s the more explosive of the 2 running backs in this system. Don’t just completely go away from him! Who in their right mind would make such a call? He’s supposed to be the running back of the future here, what kind of message is that sending him? A real vote of confidence. That showed during that last drive also when Greene was so nervous he dropped a ball handed to him on a silver platter. Those drops happen when a player over thinks everything happening around him.
Aside from that… the defense looked very solid tonight. I’m glad we didn’t lose that part to the team.
The special teams looks vastly improved from last year.
I feel bad for Jenkins. My gut tells me this is it for him and that he’s out for the season and likely his career but I really hope it’s just a sprain and he’ll be out for at most a month.
Missing Santonio right now seems very bad. He could have definitely helped throughout the game and at the very least during that final drive. Even though… we did have Cotchery and Edwards the entire game and they were practically non-existant.
This offense is just begging to be taken control of by someone. Right now Schottenheimer is in control and it seems like he doesn’t trust his QB and RB’s and WR’s enough to take risks. Once someone comes in and takes control this offense will take flight.

Fire Schotty, cha cha chachacha, fire schotty cha cha chachacha, fire schotty cha cha chachacaha, and so on
-
Once again, the Jets lost by 1 point to the team all the “experts” expect to be in the Superbowl.
People really need to calm down.
Yes, the Jets didn’t stretch the field, but, once again, this is what happens when you have 3 RECEIVERS ON THE ACTIVE ROSTER (and 2 of them are possession receivers — one a converted QB who has never been successful as a receiver) and 7 or 8 players on the Ravens dropping back into pass defense.
You take what they give you, and they only gave us checkdowns.
-
KEYS to the LOSS
!
1) LT getting to many carries, Shonn green never found a grove
2) Sanchez was deplorable
3) Cotchery dropped a big pass
4) Keller should have reached out.BOttome LINE: BULL****
-
LT: 11 rushes for 62 yards (5.5 average)
SG: 5 rushes for 8 yards, 2 fumbles, one lost.

REX NEEDS TO TAKE SCHOTTY OUT BEHIND THE BACK SHED AND WHOOP HIS F’N A$$.
this had to be the worst offensive showing i have ever seen… and i am a lifelong jets fan.
i really dont think we should put this on sanchez. schotty repeatedly didn’t scheme well or put his qb in an environment to feel comfortable. on third down, schotty seems more intent on having a back out on the flat for the checkdown instead of being behind in protection. no passes to stretch the field, not even a fair amount of tosses or sweeps to counter this aggressive and aging ravens d. i refuse to believe schotty had a gameplan because if he did he definitely needs to be fired. put callahan in charge, i dont think it would be as difficult as a transition as many think.
-
If 8 drop back, shouldn’t we with our O-line be able to run better than we did?
-
We averaged 5.5 yards per carry.
-
If you take 2 runs out average drops to 3
-
-
-
5. ALL THE DEFENSIVE PENALTIES
-
We were all dreaming like we do when we contemplate winning the lottery. The reality is that there’s hard work to do and lots of ups and downs ahead.
-
bottom line…as bad as the offense was…we shulda won 9-6….horrid penalty calls, EXPECIALLY braylons “running into the kicker”
-
+1
We gotta stop blinding ourself to thinking we have a bad team.Only reason it is disappointing is all the expectations put on this team but defense proved to be good as advertised. That is without Pace and Jenkins too.We just need to be better on offense. Its a long season and with Miami playing the Viking next week, with a win we are once again tied for 1st place again. We lost by 1 point despite how bad our offense was. That says something.

Okay…Just got back from the game and after paying a small fortune for tickets and waiting on a 2 hour line to take the train back to Penn I have a few points.
1. Did the defense play absolutely perfect…No but pretty damn close. Say what you will. They gave up some yards and they gave up some plays but man do they fight. When you have players like that you keep attacking because you are going to win more than you lose. Just a very resilient bunch. Cro definitely needs to work on some things but he fought hard (Made some tackles!) and did come up with the pic. He is not a cover guy like Revis but he is a ball hawk. Wilson will get better and the ridiculous soft calls were not doing him any favors. I’d hate to see Jenks out but let’s not forget that we were NOT the number one d when he went down last year and we established that feet with him out of the lineup.
Kudos tonight to Bryan Thomas as he was all over the field. If you watch a re-run of this game you are going to see him in on every pressure. Gholston played some quality minutes and as much as it pains me to say this Taylor was very active and I thought he played well. All in all some great things out of the defense. The offense gave them NOTHING and they had so many chances to fold but they fought hard to the end. You really see Rex’s persona in those players.Just a thought on Revis…It’s possible they wanted to have him shadow a side instead of a player to see if they could trust Cro and Wilson in Man coverage. Also the loss of Pool may have wanted them to have Revis roaming the field a bit more. I think you will see him lock in on Randy next week as that seems like a better strategy…
2) The offense…really nothing to say except that I do not think you can KILL Sanchez. He certainly did not play well but he managed the game and he did not turn the ball over.
What is the deal with Schotty…We have no plan, no rhythm no anything. It just does not seem like he has any clue what we are trying to do out there. Besides the fact that it was a disastrous exercise in futility, he is doing nothing. Are we a running team? If so, why does he countlessly call plays out of the shotgun on 2nd and 6? Are we a throwing team? If so, why did we only go down the field twice tonight and the time we threw to a wide receiver it was cotchery (NOT our deep threat).
He just out thinks himself. I think he knows football and his insights may be valued by Rex and his staff. However, It is just not working here. There could be any number of reasons but it is just not going to work. I really think the identity of this offense is going to hold this team back. Rex really needs to step in and influence the playcalling a bit more or its going to be another season of “Why can’t we do this every week” and then followed by a 9 point showing and loss to the Bills.
This defense is championship calibur..Step up O.
Defense allows 10 points causes three turnovers and starts 4 drives on the other side of the opponents 50 and you come up short.
-
If Jenks is IR’d maybe we’ll see LC back. Got to find offense somewhere.
If Rex has such a knack for seeing the whole field and predicting what the enemy offense will try next, he should mentor Shotty’s play calling.
The playbook probably is fine. It’s the play calling that’s discordant against a tough team like the Ravens.
New England can march down the field with a variety of positive plays. That’s a model to emulate.
I don’t have confidence that Shotty is up to making the necessary adjustments to do this.
Rex better get interested fast in why Shotty’s offense doesn’t work…and then do something about it.
-
AND!….as “BAD” as cro was…still way better than lito
-
OK, something positive, something positive…
Ummmm, and WHAT WAS WITH THE ROAD UNIS?
Home is for the Green jersey! White is for the road…
-
With the score so tight throughout, why did it feel like we were down 38-7 and it was over halfway through the 3rd Quarter?

I Am Watching You wrote:
“If 8 drop back, shouldn’t we with our O-line be able to run better than we did?”
=========================================
We had 116 yards rushing on 21 carries (5.5 yards per carry).
Like I said previously, the scouting reports said that the best place to run against the Ravens is between the guards. That wasn’t very effective, but Schotty felt the need to stay running between the guards, even if stretch plays and the few outside runs (only like 2 or 3 of them) were effective.
God forbid if he ran more than ONE screen pass and ZERO draws.
-
If you take 2 longest runs our average drops to 3
-
Yeah , this was tough to watch, should have guessed it was gonna be when Sanchez , ran and slid on 3rd down , slid one yd short of a first down. that and keller going out of bounds 1/2 yd short….are they on the metric system or somehthing? highlight to me was a pass where cromartie wasn’t flagged, wait there might have been two. lastly i can’t help but think we would have been better keeping Chad p !!!
-
I blame it on the offensive coordinator. Schottenheimer’s a household name because of Marty. I don’t think this guy can be a successful coach. What has he done to get the offense better since he’s arrived on the Jets? They need to ax this guy and let him go. Jets need a better offensive coordinator. Someone like Norm Chow, or maybe give Bill Callahan a chance.
-
Our offense looked better when Sanchez was making the calls.Maybe SHotty should give Sanchez some more freedom to make his own decisions. It seemed that Sanchez was WAY TO CONSERVATIVE and that goes back to Shotty. He didn’t want Sanchez throwing Picks and Sanchez was afraid to throw deep because of the risk.
-
-
Is it just be or should LT have gotten more than 11 carries? He was the only thing on offense that actually worked.
-
And by the way that 3 receivers bunched audible to run, was the same formation keller caught a ball on 4 yard. was called back cause edwards wasn’t set.
-
Well I hope we release a TE this week and sign Coles back because it is clear we need WR depth.Coles would be a good fill in while Holmes gets back in week 5.Holmes could be a HUGE Boost.Hopefully we get Pace back next week and Jenkins hopefully isn’t hurt too bad.
One positive note though was Jason Taylor. He really stepped up Bigtime today in the run defense.
-
Remember last year that Rex had to start sitting in on Schotty’s meetings and make him simplify the offense? That is when we started playing better.
Schotty is like Jason Garrett of the Cowboys — too in love with his schemes (constant presnap movement that fools no one) and thinks he’s way too creative.
-
He does over complicates things…
-
-
MT should give Schottenheimer a stipulation for this Sunday’s all-important game: Put up 21 points, or you’re fired. Three active receivers or not, there’s NO excuse for such unimaginative play design. With LT, DK, and that trio of servicable receivers to throw to, ANY offensive coordinator in this league should be able to make SOMETHING happen.
-
Kris Jenkins will have his MRI @9am on his injured knee but for now Jets doctors optimistic its not an ACL. Jenkins left game in 1st Qtr…
-Jason La Canfora on twitter
-
He walked off his own power so maybe there is still hope for Jenkins.Maybe it is a Sprain and not a tear.If that is the case we can manage until he gets back.Pace may be on his way back and Jason Taylor tonight earned himself more playing time.
-
-
Sanchez has yet to prove he can pull out a game in the final 2 minutes. Despite all the penalties and lack of “O,” we had a chance to get to within field goal range with 1:44 left on the clock and 1 timeout. Until Sanchez develops the ability to do that, we’re going to lose some close games in the last few seconds of play.
The truth hurts. He’s still a kid with a lot to learn.. I hope he grows quickly.
-
If Keller stays in bounds and doesn’t go out of bound before the marker, who knows what would have happened.Sanchez didn’t get a fair chance to prove it.
-
-
Shotty does over complicates things. for sure…
-
He’s the master of running the ball when he should pass, and pass the ball when he should run. He likes to think he’s out-thinking the opponent and ends up out-thinking himself.
He was the master of not giving Leon Washington the ball because Leon was way too effective, therefore he could throw the defense off guard by not giving Leon more than 4 touches a game.
Why does he still have a job?
-
It’s well and all ( i do think half of his plays he comes up sitting at night over his own play book rather than watching the film), but until Sanchez proves me wrong i would still baby him, and not loose the offense. Everyone mentions last year playoffs… Well if we played 3 times over the same games, who knows how many INT he would throw. It is visible he doesn’t see the field, i don’t think he has enough of experience to open up the offense.
And another thing, where did all this band wagon Jets fans came from???? Ohhh, just dropped off their SB straight rout?? The season is 16 games… Cant handle that get the f***ck off the wagon….
-
-
-
I never comment Basset an crew you are awesome. I got my girl into football last year at the end of the season and it was real cool. I was super pumped for this game but the jets offense aired me out the D line and backers did a awesome job and even with revis out he only had that one penalty. Wow I though a bunch of calls didn’t go our way am I wrong? This is one diehard fan heart broken on opening day even though the D doesn’t look like the same old Jets. Come on O get us us one TD my Birthday is on 10/20. Much love BRo
-
Well, after having some time to cool off, I think we need to step back from the ledge. I realize that there are problems, but there’s a silver lining too.
1) The defense looked very good. Cromartie and Wilson need to spend some time with game film though. Hopefully Jenkins is okay.
2) Special Teams unit looked good too–great field position all night. The only blemish is Edwards’ penalty, which I think we all agree was ridiculous.
3) Yes the offense was terrible, but that is likely to be the best defense we are going to face all year. Baltimore will likely be 2nd in the league for team defense behind us, at the very least top 5. The only teams on our schedule who will be remotely close are the Steelers, Packers and Patriots. We are bound to get better
4) LT looked good but he is not sustainable all season at that pace.
Keys for the future:
–Schottenheimer needs to stop getting cute with the play calling. Even if you’re afraid Sanchez is going to throw a pick, sometimes you have to let him do it. If he keeps calling nothing but 5 yard screens, teams are going to stuff the box–case in point, Chad Pennington’s career in NY. STRETCH THE FIELD EARLY. At least once or twice.–No excuses from Cromartie, he was a penalty machine in SD too if I remember correctly. Time to change that
–Greene needs redemption next week.
–Wilson’s a rookie–enough said.
Note to NFL League office: If there are stories being written about a team of officials that love to call penalties, you need to fix that problem. Especially don’t sign them to officiate a game with the stature this one had.
-
Paul Hackettesque…barf.
-
worst!
-
-
Did any of you guys get the impression that the offense was run like a Madden Game?I mean when the game is tight and you really want to win the game, it makes you play too conservative. You tend to throw to your RB and TE more often because you don’t think you have enough time to find your receivers open. That is what happened today. The Jets were too worried about not turning the ball over, that they became too conservative. Sanchez needs to play like he did in the beginning of the season last year and we can win games.Don’t worry about throwing Interceptions. You just have to understand the situation and not throw in traffic.Sometimes I feel like I should be the Jets coordinator lol.
-
After one of the most embarrassing offensive performances in NFL history, 2 things are clear.
1)
This is not the best O-line in football. The pass protection issues in preseason continued in week 1. This is not just a LG issue — Woody and Ferguson struggled against a very physical defensive front 7.2)
The kid is still not ready to play in the NFL. The kid looked lost and confused. And worst of all… he looked scared.
Baltimore’s defense can make a lot of QBs look bad, but an offense needs to attack, move the ball, and put points on the board.
It is clear neither Rex nor Schotty trust the kid and they were hoping to play a field position game and win with a few FGs. If the special teams and defense weren’t dominant, this would have been a total blow out. It is time to make a change.Kellen Clemens may never be a star QB in this league, but he is much better than the kid is right now. The kid needs to sit and hold a clipboard for a while. It is not good for his long term psyche to know the only reason a playoff caliber team does not win is because the QB sucks! (which was painfully obvious to the entire country tonight on MNF).
The kid has incredible physical gifts, and has a chance to be good one day. But we need get a QB coach/mentor that knows how to play like Favre. This kid needs to learn that his arm is a special weapon. He needs to learn that great QBs do NOT “manage” a game ala Pennington; great QBs are aggressive and know how to attack a defense.
The kid needs to learn how to throw against an NFL defense that knows the pass is coming.
The kid needs time to mature – it is time for him to sit.
It is time for Kellen Clemens to step in and make sure this team doesn’t end up 1-3 heading into Minnesota. -
I DONT EVEN BLAME SANCHEZ FOR THAT ATROCITY I JUST WITNESS. BRIAN SCHOTTY HAS TO GO, I SAID THIS LAST YEAR AND I STAND BY THOSE WORDS!!!!!!!!! I just cant get how we only threw the ball down the field 3 times all game with a inept secondary on the opposite side. But for as horrible as the jets played, they had a chance to win. Which I called before this game started. All these lame b-more fans calling a blowout, better be lucky the jets kept getting called for penalties. Jets Defense played extremely well because this could of been a blowout easily. Rookie CB Wilson gets picked on the whole night, I think revis got thrown at 3 times tonight with no catches in his coverage. Cro has no agility but did make a nice pick before halftime. Hoping this is not the story when holmes comes back or we are in for a VERY LONG SEASON.
1 more thing, LET SANCHEZ DA F*** LOOSE, STOP TELLING HIM TO DINK AND DUMP THE BALL LIKE CHAD PENNINGTON DID HERE. HE WILL NOT LAST IN THE LEAGUE WITH THAT ATTITUDE
-
BECAUSE THE MAN NEVER LOOKED DOWNFIELD! BRAYLON WAS ONE ON ONE ALL DAY AND HE JUST DOESNT LOOK THE LEFT.
Yes shotty sucks but dont make a cop out for mark not being able to look downfield and see what the safeties are giving him.
all these people not at the game texting me “they need to let mark loose” obviously heard someone on ESPN say that because players were running routes downfield- he just couldnt make them!
-
That’s all true and good but the post itself stated the problem. Sanchez was scared. Why? The only ppl that can scare him is his coaches. It seemed to me that turnovers was fresh in the back of his mind. You can turn the ball over and still win. Sanchez is allowed 1 maybe even 2 turnovers. Let him throw the ball and see what he has. Where was Brunell to tell him to relax.
-
-
-
As a soj fan who has suffered with this team for way too long(plus my pessimism gets the best of me at times), the defense was amazing as usual, and hope that jenkins is ok. Sanchez looked like he was lost out there, brian schottenheimer is a atrocious play caller and his head needed to roll a while back. As for the raven scum they seem to be talking alot of smack considering they won by a point. we shut down their new “high octane” passing game.
Allow sanchez to spread the field damnit why get edwards, holmes if your going to run routes short of ten yards and even worse the out of bounds pass before he even passed the first down marker just made me piss my pants with joy.
-
if this was said already i apologize…
but 2nd to last drive of the game, LT for 20… then LT for 7… he get up, all pumped up…clappin his hands…. he is the hot RB…
we take him out and sub in greene….. guy 2 rows behind me yells out “Why take out the hot RB”..
i turn and say….damn right…what the hell…
next play we send greene out to the flat for a possible dump off….and of course we check down and throw it to him and he drops it…
LIL schotty was brutal….
and the pass int call in the end zone and the running into the kicker especially were brutal calls that changed the game…
even stu scott and steve young on espn just now said the braylon call was like calvin johnson call a “dumb nfl rule”…. the kicker finished the kick…braylon is on the side of him and his over-follow thru ends with him tumbling like a b**ch AND HE GETS THAT CALL?????
the refs in this league suck….
oh…and nice idea to play 18 games at some point….flacco hit, jenkins injury, ray lewis hit on keller…. these guys take enough of a beating….
-
LT tapped out after his second run. Should lil shotty have forced LT to stay in when he asked out? You and the guy two rows back should watch the game closer.
-
-
and can someone tell me if that punt return by baltimore near the goal line should have been called a safety???
never got a good replay at the game….
but i was on that goalline…seemed like a very generous forward progress call…
shocker….
-
he had forward progress, wasnt that close
-
thanks timbo…thought so…
usually give u forward progress near goal line….
that punt returner still dumb as hell :)
-
-
The four scoreboards at the game showed the replay four times. Were you and the guy two rows back at the beer line?
-
ha…didnt see a great goal line view?? i was on that goal line….2nd level first row…. play was on my side also…
just looked sketchy live… and maybe missed 1 of the replays…
-
-
-
the suffering continues… Suffer like a JET!
-
just got back from the game with an endzone view of sanchez… looks like we will be approaching the kyle boller years the ravens fans had to suffer through
-
Schotty has a stable of players that no othe Jets OC ever had. What does he do with it. Runs Brad f’n Smith…. Joke, joke nothing but a joke.
-
Really? Brad Smith runs were probably the best offensives plays of the night. In retrospect they should have used Brad Smith more than he was used!
-
1 out of 3 worked. I’d rather give 89 or 17 3 deep looks. 1 will work
-
no 2 out of 3 worked.
its hard to give your WR’s looks when your QB isnt willing to throw them the ball
-
or OC wont call the damn play .
-
I was at the game- there were plenty of options- he didnt make the throws.
Even the one reception he got to cotchery early in the second half Braylon was wide open in the endzone.
I hate shotty as much as the next guy but people need to start pointing the finger at the QB. He did not throw the ball downfield when it was available

The offense just looked out of sync tonight. The Ravens’ defense was a major factor, but the dropped passes (Jericho had 2 huge drops, along with Greene’s) and Greene’s fumble didn’t help. This season is all about Sanchez, but I felt he wasn’t given a chance to win the game, only not to lose. If Rex doesn’t have confidence that his QB can win a game, then get a new QB. Sometimes QBs have to throw into coverage and let their receivers make plays or give the refs an opportunity to throw a flag. Also, the offensive penalties were killer, especially the Edwards illegal shift that negated a beautiful pass and catch (by a covered Keller) up the seam and the Wilson pass interference in the end zone may have been the pivotal play of the game. But, how about some criticism for Rex? 4th and less than 1 in the red zone and he doesn’t go for it? That’s cowardly football. If this team is a Super Bowl team and the baddest team in the NFL, you go for it on 4th and 1 in the red zone because if you don’t get the yard, the defense can attack the other team in the shadow of the end zone. Rex and the offense played not to lose and the Jets will not even be .500 if the offense doesn’t match the “take no prisoners” persona of the defense and special teams, which were excellent. The offense has to step it up and play to win.
-
good post
-
-
been a jets fan for 27 years , this was the worst peformance ive ever seen. thank the good lord we had the specialsit of teams to help us out. on top of the rain and the heart breaking lost with no 3rd down conversions , the staduim is horrible . the only thing cool is watching the rich people chillen out in their huge boxes and paying out the rear for seat that are worse then last year so rich people can straight chill. studium looks exactly the sa,me on the inside its just twice as expensive as last year and you still need parking passes for some insane reason.
-
two loses to phins last year are worse than this, right of the top of my head. You crazies are thinking to win SB first week of the season… calm down people…
-
-
Besides, if we fire Schotty we give Bill Callahan to call plays. He did it all the way to the Super Bowl with a comperable talent !
-
I think all of you guys make excellent points, but from the comments in his post game press conference, this was the gameplan. It was basically to play good defense and not turn the ball over on offense. I can’t lay blame at the feet of Brian Schottenheimer every time the offense doesn’t play well. After all, this is the same guy who developed both Drew Brees and Philip Rivers into elite NFL QB’s. I am sure the Jets had plays where they had WR’s running deep routes. The problem was Mark Sanchez wasn’t looking down field, and when he did, he was too scared to throw the ball and let his receiver make a play.
Andrew was dead on in his analysis. It seems the coaches have preached to Sanchez that if he doesn’t turn the ball over the defense will do enough to win. However, when you have weapons like Braylon Edwards and Dustin Keller, and precise route runner like Jerricho Cotchery, you have to get the ball to them and let them make plays. If you listened to Sanchez’ post game comments he seemed way too happy that he didn’t turn the ball over. That isn’t a good sign.
It’s only one game, but the Jets have to seriously re-evaluate things and fast. In the NFL 2010, you cannot win by being one-dimensional on offense. I don’t care how good the defense is.
-
I posted without reading first , kinda say the same thing. Turnovers did not win or lose the game. The Jets playing like panssies did.
-
-
How do you run out of bounds short of the first in that situation? He must have not been thinking straight after that hit by Lewis. The sticks were right in front of him. Terrible
-
Sad sad day, one touchdown and we would have won. 60 mins of football and this sb bound team cant get one! even starting from the 12 yard line? Come on we can’t win if we don’t score touchdowns! Folk did his part but the offense needs to get it together, this is how we played in preseason and the offensive struggles are damning a team with so much talent and potential just a shame, I’m not sure who to blame Sanchez shotty or even Rex but this cannot continue. Really hope Jenkins is ok!
-
NO MORE MARTY BALL!!!! SCHOTTY’S GOT TO GO!!! Sanchez has talent, but his coaches are invoking so much fear in him if he throws an INT that he’s afraid to try anything downfield. I say give him one pick a game and see if he can open things up. And what’s up with this super-ultra-complex-pre-snap routine? It’s a goddamn joke. Just snap the f@ckin ball and run the play, we’re not fooling anybody. Embarrassing.
-
Damn , once again I have to read before I post. Give the kid at least 1 int before you reil em in.
-
-
People, you su**k. This was not a worst loss. You are not either Jets fan or football fan if you dump on your team after 10-9 1st game loss to a team who many project to win a SB. Admit, you all bought into hype that Jets are SB bound team. Truth is no one is till late in the season. Are there concerns? Sure! But this was one game against good opponent, with a very young QB who don’t have enough experience even at college level. We have tough schedule and most games will be dog fights. But Jets didn’t embarrass themselves. This can’t compare to any game they played under Mangini… I will take this game over any under his regime. (Well almost any). Wait until week four and if they are worse than 2-2, then you can start doing all this.
-
Good Post! As disappointed as I was with this loss. It could have been a lot worse! While the offense was a little embarrassing (see getting the ball at the 12 and not being able to score a touchdown) the D and ST really stepped up. Yes they got burned a couple of times, but they only gave up 1 touchdown and 1 FG. This is a very good team, who added the likes of Anquan Bolden. Ray Rice was kept in check and the D on a whole was very stout, even after big Jenks went down. It’s only one game against a very good team, that if it wasn’t for one or two plays, questionable calls, or dropeed passes could have ended up as a win. Do you think Payton Manning and the Colt’s Super Bowl hopes are over cause they lost one game???!!!??!
-
right on…
people who are “panicking” and killing sanchez… .aka losers who call into WFAN and ESPN1050…
are not smart fans…
its 1 game…against a sick D….with an absurd amount of penalties by a crew that is known to call them….
we gotta chill….
-
-
-
Schotty was horrible! He can’t win with any QB! Brees never played half as well as he did when in San Diego with him, then he couldn’t win with Pennington, and then couldn’t win with favre! If you can win with these guys, you’re just horrible. I hope Rex takes over some of the playcalling on offense now that we now how incompetent schotty is
-
Somebody call PETA, ’cause I’m heading to the zoo to punch a zebra square in the face. This game was a travesty.
Some home field advantage? Next time, let’s play in Jupiter or France! They called two defensive holding calls on us in the first quarter. I haven’t seen two defensive holding calls in thirty years!!!
We were robbed!!!
-
MSHANAHAN YOU ARE COMPLETLY CORRECT ,Kellen Clemens NEEDS TO BE THE STARTING QB PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!!
HE KNOWS THIS OFFENSE BETTER THAN ANYONE..74 YARDS JETS PAID 50 MILLION FOR A QB TO PASS FOR 74 YARDS YOUR F!$%^&*G KIDDING ME!!!

HE PLAYED 1 YEAR AT A TOP SCHOOL THAT DOESNT MAKE YOU A NFL QB , REX RYAN, SHOTTY IF YOU CONTINUE TO IGNORE Kellen Clemens,
YOU GUYS SHOULD WALK AWAY CAUSE CLEARLY REX YOU KNOW DEFENSE BUT YOU KNOW DIDLY ABOUT OFFENSE, AND ON TOP OF ALL THAT YOU FORCE KELLEN TO TAKE A PAY CUT YOUR WHOLE MGMT SHOULD TAKE A PAY CUT..
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST DUSTIN KELLER COULD HAVE BEEN LOST FOR THE SEASON HAD HE BEEN HIT ANY HARDER FROM THE SUICIDE BALL SANCHEZ THREW TO HIM

-
Standing too close to the edge buddy. Do you want me to push you over?
-
-
schotty must go
-
Final analysis: if a team, like the ravens, can stop the jets run game with only 7 men in the box then Sanchez is going to have a long day. Very rarely did the ravens actually bring a safety up.
-
From a die hard and extremely passionate JETS fan, there certainly isn’t any passion (player or coach) on the offensive side of the ball…just utterly pathetic!! 6 first downs, and 1/11 on 3rd downs? Rex your ‘da man, but cool down the superbowl chatter…its time to regroup and work on converting first downs!!! Your a defensive genius, but there are three phrases of the team and the responsibility falls on your shoulders since you are the head coach! Take a step back, and please do something about our VANILLA and ANEMIC offense!!!!!!! Oh, and please hold these so called professional athletes acountable for their STUPID and unexplainable (except Wilson) penalities!!!!
-
JET FANS IF YOU TRULY ARE JET FANS YOU BETTER WAKE UP AND START CHANTING KELLEN OR YOU WONT EVEN WIN 5 GAMES THIS YEAR..
UNDER SANCHEZ NO WR WILL HAVE OVER A 100 YARDS
YOU CAN BRING IN LARRY FITZGERALD AND SANCHEZ WONT KNOW HOW TO GET HIM THE BALL,
THEY PRE SEASON DOESNT COUNT OK , BUT IT WAS A SIGN AND EVERYBODY KEPT LYING TO THEMSELVES JUST A PRE SEASON, YEAH WHAT EVER HE THREW A INT IN EVERY PRE SEASON GAME
SANCHEZ IS NOT A NFL QB MAYBE 4 YEARS FROM NOW
GIVE KELLEN THE DAMN BALL!!!!!AND MAYBE THIS SEASON WILL BE SAVED -
what happen’s when they end up 0-2? or maybe even 0-3? Two huge division games coming up. One on the national stage again.
-
I was more in shock when this game ended than I was pissed. I was just so shocked that the offense was that bad. Its almost like they are waiting for Santonio Holmes to come and make plays for them, because they dont think they can do it themselves. These are the same receivers we had last year when we got to the AFC Championship game, I wish we trusted them more. Id never be stupid enough to make statements about this team after 1 game like some of you have. “Sanchez isnt ready to be an NFL QB”, “Shonn Greene Sucks” and all this other stupid stuff Im seeing. Ill admit it certainly didnt look good, but you cant make assesments on this team after 1 game, and btw not to make excuses, but maybe the Ravens Defense is as good as they were tonight. I dont see this offense being held down week in and week out throughout the season.
And we all know were gonna here it tomorrow and ALL Week, “Rex Ryan talked so much and he couldnt back it up” “Rex Ryan cost the Jets the game by talking so much” and all the other BS you know were gonna have to here, thats such a lame theory and if anyone uses it, you will be easily able to see his football IQ isnt too high. The Jets didnt lose tonight because Rex Ryan Beleives in his team and said so to the media, it had nothing to do with that. If Shonn Greene doesnt fumble the Jets win that game, If Jericho Cotchery catches that 3rd down pass, the Jets probably win that game, if there isnt an insanely ticky-tack call on that running into the kicker play, the Jets probably win the game. For anyone to blame the loss on the Jets “talking” all off-season than thats just really lame and you need to have whatever sports journalism licenses you have revoked!
-
i guess lt starts next week, anyone agree?
-
You guys must be smoking if you think Kellen going to be the quaterback that leads us to the playoffs. sanchez just looks like he just going thru the motion I’m a big USC but he should stay in college than came out. sanchez need to man up and listen to Rex stop pull pratically jokes on the defense.
-
was there even a pass attempt to Braylon Edwards the entire game?
On offense I agree with both assesments….They got the kid so scared to make a mistake thay they are making Herm Edwards our QB and coordinator…at the same time, he has to be a bigger man, step up and not be afraid to make an error….he checked down almost on every play where Wrs and Te ran a deep route. the scary part is he checked down without even giving a chance for a play to develop or even throwing to open Wrs in single coverage.
We can not treat this kid like he is mentally retarded and cant wipe his own nose….because thats exactly what youre going to get…someone who cant wipe his own nose…..I mean 3rd and 5 at midfield and you call a run play down the middle with brad smith at QB? Schotty might as well bench the kid and let brad smith run the rest then.
-
Terrell Suggs really needs to shut the hell up. “Rex has to deal with the next he created” SON, YOU WON BY 1 POINT BECAUSE OF PENALTIES. Be thankful you got the luckiest win of Week 1 and shut your goddamn mouth. The Ravens suck, baby.
-
MONSTER he created. Too many beers. Still a freaking joke to talk trash after that debacle.
-
-
Lack of disapline our qb didn’t look down the field a lot of times the oline jumped offsides at crucial times our olineman was tossed like a child at a justin beiber concert. Our number 1 rb fumbles the head coach takes him out most of the game and we heavily rely on him so we bite our nose off to spite our face.he gets back in and drops a big pass.our dbs don’t know how to turn their heads around and locate the ball we run into a kiicker all this plus more and we lose by 1 point and you guys are freaking out?this is a bmore team that beat the hell out of the pats something we haven’t done in a long time.people relax we r gonna be ok.
-
A total sh#t show was actually better now than winning barely and keeping a dangerous level of overconfidence. Go back. Address the offense issue. Win through the season and get into the playoffs. This is not a broken team.
-
Let’s calm down for a second. Week 1 is always a crap shoot. Teams don’t show their playbook in the pre-season and there really is no film to look at.
Ryan is a master at game planning and as the season develops that will get better.
I’ve never seen the offense look worse. On the other side of the ball, it looked like Flacco was just lobbing the ball in the air and either the receiver caught it, or there was a penalty call.
And the roughing the kicker call was an absolute joke. The kids obviously took a dive. And that changed the entire game.
Despite all that, they only lost by 1 point to a team that many predict is going to the Super Bowl.
So hang in there – the real test is next week against New England. If they lose that, then we’re in real trouble.
-
Im not worried about our defense or Ryan. Im worried about the crappy offense.
-
-
The refs on the most part called a fair game , accept in key situations here and there.
I don’t know if it’s Sanchez fault or the fact that it seemed like some one had him scared but the reads were easy. On one play the d was obviously blitzing, Chez had J-Cho for a quick pass but took a sack. I eat ppl up with that in madden . WTF.
-
not even bothering to read as I know 95% of you buffoons will blame Schotty for everything – and i agree, as OC it Schotty is responsible for the D giving up 3rd down after 3rd down, Keller & Cotch dropping 1st down passes, the Refs not calling it ways, and why there is no peace in the middle east.
Only thing I care about Sunday is ending Brady’s season
-
Epic Fail
-
-
This team is gonna get anihillated by Miami, let alone the Pats. Can’t make open field tackles and the secondary is braindead. Good lord Welker’s going to have a historic game I’ll bet.
-
Oh yes, the problem was the defense…
-
-
Ummmmm 10 penalties for 100 yards in the first half alone?
Dropped passes
Overly complex audibles
QB as Mr. Checkdown
Typical lack of creativity from OC
Total lack of emotion on offense
Aaarrggggghhhhhhh
-
all things considered, it was a game they could have won, not should have won.
Baltimore’s defense was one point better.
Sanchez is still a rookie QB. I was expecting him to lose the game on a stupid pick.
At least he has learned how to slide for a first down.
He didn’t get it, but he didnt get hurt either.
His dumbest move was calling his last TO with one minute left after a first down. I knew then the football gods were not in the mood for a Jet miracle. He had to spike the ball to stop the clock.
You must keep that last TO until the last second FG attempt. -
Schotty please stop with this balance offense crap if something is working keep doing it until they show you they can stop it. Run the wild cat with Brad Smith more if lt just broke two good runs keep feeding him the ball. Sanchez is being held back and he will never Be an elite QB if he does not take chances downfield. He has to trust his ability to get the ball there like the pass to Keller that was called back he put that ball between two Raven defenders. Yes I know there were drops and offsides that made it difficult but that’s why the offensive coordinator gets paid the big bucks tough situation against a tough defense how are you going to confuse them and please stop all the motion movement just snap the ball please hurry up offense don’t let the defense set up. And to Rex last year you inherited a team that was very tight they were very disciplined bc Mangini was a nut ran his camp Like a military camp well now everyone is to loose especially the secondary going out for cheesburgers and paying atten to that Mexican reporter get your heads out of your asses your not that good step up and take this seriously tou guys looked like clowns out their Ugh!
-
How could you possibly blame Sanchez for that it’s clear Schotty wanted him to check down. There were plays when he snapped the ball and then immediately checked down that’s by design not because Mark wanted to
-
As usual noone ever mentions rex ryan. I guess it never the head coaches fault.
-
Any jet fan who has been watching this team for a real amount of time has seen that loss 20 times. After this team running its mouth all the time we are a joke this tuesday morning.
-
Get your head around a loss to NE then eight road games remaining. Must-win in game two or at best we’re nine win team after off-season of yipping.
-
woke up to some serious heartache from this. I was saying Jamarcus Russell last night, but I won’t even blame Sanchez for this one even though HE SUCKED HARD. LT,Greene,Schotty. Why can I see this offense clicking next week, and then the defense sucks?
-
lmao can you believe all summer, I don’t think ONE PERSON said..”same old Jets”.
-
Lets all be honest. The offensive coordinator was to blame here and thats a simple fact. Play calling was just plain awful. We have been waiting since 1970 for these guys to gel. They have a no excuse period. They have the talent the money and the coaching. They stink
-
I defended Schotty for a long time, but he needs to get FIRED TODAY. Where is the accountability? Sanchez deserves blame as well(he is totally overrated like most USC QBs), but Schotty prepared him, became his best friend & not his coach. Schotty trained him to be a terrified dog. Schotty never challenged the secondary EVEN THOUGH IT WAS WELL KNOWN THIS OFFICIATING CREW CALLS VERY TIGHT PASS INTs ALL THE TIME. Why didn’t we challenge them even just to get some calls? Keeping Greene in the game was horrid when LT was insanely hot.
Also, our OL: Slauson & Woody totally not prepared for pass protection. Is Schotty not accountable at some point?
Rex deserves blame too: Why isn’t Revis covering Boldin(their #1) instead of a ROOKY????
BUT FIRE SCHOTTY TODAY!!!1
-
When was revis burned? They didnt even look at Revis.
-
His rookie season, as in don’t look too deeply into Wilson’s bad day.
-
-
WHY DID WE DRAFT A QB WITH THE FIFTH PICK IF WE”RE NOT GONNA LET HIM THROW??!!!!! 1st Down: run. 2nd Down: Run Third Down: RUN. Punt. ARE YOU F***ING KIDDING ME???!!!!!! They were stopping the run at every turn but hey lets give it another shot. This offense was being called to not lose the game, NOT to win it. BAD COACHING!!!! F***ING DISGUSTING PLAYCALLING!!! SCHOTTY does not get a pass on this one. Throw the F***ING BALLL AND LET THE KID MAKE A MISTAKE BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO NOT LET HIM PLAY! THIS WAS GARBAGE!!!
-
mike, it said burned in his first year for revis not yesterday….. that was ugly who gets the game ball for the ravens,,, shonn greene braylon edwards kyle wilson…. disgusting Why was the rookie on there best receiver…..
-
the ravens werent that great…. cut down the penaly ravens are off the field …jets were anemic
-
Wilson covering Boldin? Somebody explain it to me. Revis doesn’t cover their #1? Please don’t tell me it’s bc Boldin was in the slot all night, Revis can cover the slot. Rex deserves blame, but really Schotty’s shi*ty offense lost this game.
-
There you go, blame the officials. STFU, idiot.
You have a head coach shooting his mouth off on a national stage and YOU HAVEN’T WON A THING! Shut your fat mouth Rex. Jets fans, I’m laughing my a** off. -
I think we all need to calm down a bit. The offense was just awful, and that, along with poor officiating cost us a win. Let’s just take out our frustration today and move on to the Patriots. The next three games, division games, are the most important.
Get the offense in gear this week at practice, and be ready to down the Patriots.
-
9 and 7 at best
-
Rod you hit it right on the head. I haven’t been around since 1970 but your on point with EVERYTHING you said.
-
dude how can we calm down? Just read something that said Jenkins is 50/50 lost for the season.
-
NO WAY TO blame the officials for this loss. IT was written about, talked about, interviews made that this OFFICIATING CREW calls a very tight game, esp in pass int. The Ravens got the message. Their OC challenged our secondary to get calls. They were smart. What does Schotty do? RUN, RUN, PASS underneath, PUNT. BLAMING THE OFFICIALS IS PATHETIC. Both temas knew this crew. Ravens took advantage & Schotty FAILED.
-
Great post – couldn’t agree more. That is all.
-
I’m not jumping off the bridge like most fans. I truly didn’t think the Jets were a super bowl team. I posted on here I thought this team would go 8-8. The main reason was exactly what i saw last night, the offense. I don’t have confidence in sanchez. I wasn’t gaga over greene, he is injury prone and fumbles the ball way to much. I couldn’t believe greene fumble the ball in the first quarter without being touched, now that is bad. I knew the defense would be good but you need to score on offense. I think Sanchez will be a good QB but it takes at least four years to really develop and become comfortable in this league. it’s unbelievable that Jenkins is hurt again. This guy has never played a full season with the jets. I bet you he is done for the year.
-
Jets averaged over 37 carries per game last year.
They had 19 yesterday (excluding Sanchez’s two “carries” that were really just him avoiding sacks).
Um…Schotty….ground and pount? Maybe? You know, the thing that the team was built around, the thing supposed to insulate your young QB from having to shoulder the load all by himself?
Good stuff, Schotty. Your offense never ceases to disappoint.
-
dude no1 is jumping off the bridge, we’re all Jets here, but when 50% of the team isn’t playing it can be frustrating.
/understatement
-
sexy rexy,I’ve been a jet fan probably before you were born, I’m use to it.
-
you probably have. I don’t wanna get used to it.
-
Fire Schotty.
-
I will agree with jet fans about Schottenheimer, he has been here long enough, it’s time for a change, unfortunately it’s not happening, were stuck with him at least for this season. It seems the Jets organization likes him.
-
Brian Schottenheimer is destroying this kid, as he destroyed Pennington’s career here. I don’t know what the front office sees in this guy because I am just sickened by his playcalling. Sanchez may be damaged beyond repair from this idiot, with his dummy counts and check downs, piss poor clock management, asinine (non)game plans. Does anyone for a second seriously think we can match point for point with the Patsys next week? Man, what a debacle.
-
Anyone going to give any blame to the big mouth hc in charge or just blame the oc hthat he still has kept around and the refs?
-
What did Rex do that makes this game his fault? Cromartie and Wilson got worked like speed bags and flagged all game. THe offense was non-existent. Even with all the penalties the defense still only gave up 10 points to an offense people were saying could be a juggernaut.
It’s his team, so of course Rex shoulders some of the blame, but you hire an offensive coordinator to scheme and plan, Rex can’t do everything himself.
-
-
If the pats get to 10 points the fin game is over!
-
Watching the offense in that game, every time they came out on the field, was agonizing. I think Sanchez said it best, “This is so easy, Schotty, you suck!”
Even in jest, were truer words ever spoken?
-
Brendan this team was extremely undisciplined and i knew that from that circus of a training camp i watched on hard knox.
-
Jets were in the bottom 1/3 in the league in penalties last year.
-
-
And can everyone please stop accusing jet fans who choose to speak the truth about the team as fans jumping on and off the bandwagon. Fans jump on bandwagons of teams that have won some championships ex. pats gmen and yankees. Fans do not jump on the bandwagon of a team that has done nothing for 40 years.
-
When i killed rex for keeping shotty you said he had no choice it was his first year well its his 2nd year and that idiot still patrols the sidelines
-
Schotty was directly involved with the development of Drew Brees and Philip Rivers, so I assume Rex & the FO thought he could do the same with Sanchez.
-
-
Please spare us all how long you’ve been a fan and how much you’ve suffered. We all know the deal.
From how I saw it, penalties and an offense intent on not killing itself, killed us. Sanchez was using his own color code system and was stuck in red all night. The positives would be they are all correctable issues. So let’s see how it goes!
-
Brendan last night was an absolute disaster i dont want to hear any excuses.I dont think the season is over just dont mention the word superbowl not with this offense.
-
….have I been? I’m trying to sift through the garbage and figure out what the issues are. Schotty is the biggest one I came from in that game. The penalties can be fixed, so can Sanchez stuck in “Code Red” and so can Greene’s fumbles. Can Schotty’s nonsensical gameplan? That’s the biggest question to me.
-
-
Rex deserves blame for not putting Revis on Boldin. He also deserves blame for not taking over the offense in the 4th quarter. But really, this was the worst offensive performance by the Jets since 1976!!! Schotty has to get fired today. Woody had the guts to fire MAngini. It’s time to clean out Schotty.
-
first of all, superbowl my ass, they are lucky to win 6 games top this year, and the only reason they are going to win those 6 games is because of the defense, lets be honest, ravens def or not,you are not going to beat anyone when your qb throws for 70 freakkin yards period, the qb is a dud,and so is his offensive coordinator,i wish faneca was still here,i bet his laughing right now, tannenbaum you are an idiot sir,and someone should call him into their office and tell him, were going to let you go,taco meat, needs to man,and stop acting like a spoiled brat, you havent done crap yet,you didnt even take this team to the playoffs last year,it was all defense again,i hope we have a controversy in the locker room between offense and defense, perhaps then brian schitty will be on thin ice cuz it looks like his job is secure even if taco meat throws for 50 yards against the patsies this sunday
-
Aaaand here is the overreaction of the day.
-
I think “taco meat” is offensive.
-
-
You think that garbage of an offense can be fixed in a week! Our starting running back who you all said would replace TJ cant hold on to the ball. The QB who is young which i understand the coaches have 0 faith in him.The pats must be salavating
-
This is the same team that beat the Pats last year with a rookie QB.
Pace will be back.
Pool will be back.
(forget we have those two on the back burner?)
And Greene will get 20 carries, or the fans will descend from the stands and publicly stone Schotty.
Greene had five carries, that’s criminal for your “#1″ running back.
-
Greene dropped the ball every time he touched it. You wanted him to get more carries last night? LT should have been fed the ball. He was on fire.
-
Either way, someone needs to be running the ball. 19 carries and no rhythm to the running game is terrible.
And, Yes, Greene needs carries and I won’t hold fumbles in Week 1 against him for a 17 week season.
-
Either way, they barely ran it. I would have liked more of Shonn Greene (he did have one catch early on). But his 2nd fumble was a HUGE momentum shift and changed the game.
Our first drive of the game, on the 11, we ran once! For a running team, in the red zone, just run it down their necks. They bust out the play action before the run was even established.
-
-
-
-
Terrible. All I have to say.
-
Brendan i didnt mean you sorry bud. But i just dont understand what everyone sees in sanchez. He struck me a spoiled brat who is very immature and takes nothing seriously. I thought the trainig camp was a joke. And i voiced my concerns about those two things before the season and i was ripped for that. So far i am right and that sucks.
-
That’s what HBO showed you. They didn’t show you video of him spending 8 hours a day in the offseason watching film and working out. He put more time in this offseason than anyone else on the team, and it wasn’t even close.
Rex runs one of the toughest training camps in the league, just because you see some giggles and pranks doesn’t mean that once the helmets go on that it’s Club Med. That’s Wade Philips or Norv Turner. Rex loves the contact, and his training camp reflects that.
It’s Week 1, against a Super Bowl contender, and if a few calls go our way and a few balls bounce our way, that’s a win. People are ready to jump ship (not you) for one loss to a great team, I just don’t follow that belief.
-
Let them jump ship dude, the fans who truly love this team will stay on board. we’ve all been here before it is a long season and i actually see the pats game as a sign of hope…because now with an early loss/pats win we get to play them and even up the division race early, as opposed to them skipping out front with a few wins and momentum. thats me being optimistic but that keeps me sane until wk 16.
-

-
In watching the replays this morning, it seems like the game plan was to get rid of the ball fast. The problem is that the jets cannot run the (get rid of the ball fast) plays that you need to run against a blitzing aggressive defense. I live in New England and having been a Jets fan since Joe Namath’s first game, this past decade has been the worst Jets fan Nightmare – with Belachick screwing the Jets and then turning into Vince Lombardi for the team I Hate the most… But if there is one thing that has made the PAT teams great, it is belachick’s teams ability to beat the blitz – they run screens perfectly, and they hit the quick pass to the small quick receiver who can run… Troy Brown, Wes Welker etc. It helps to have brady, but he didn’t do too bad with Cassell either.
My big fear is that they have broken Sanchez. Last year he would be terrible, but he could also be terrific (like every rookie QB). Its starting to feel like they did a mojo-ectomy to the guy.-
Good post. Where were the slants to DK?. The quick outs to LT worked too.
-
There didn’t seem to be any game plan. They have Sanchez so afraid of making a mistake that he is paralyzed. Can they throw the ball down the field one time? Can they throw on first down once in a while? And news flash- McKnight is not going to replace Leon. And if that is how Greene is going to play, can we trade for Thomas Jones?
-
Greene had a bad fumble, give th eguy a break. We already knew his hands were suspect, and he did have one catch. But the dude can run the ball simple as that. Just needs to hold on to the ball. Greene will have a MUCH better 2010 than TJ.
-
-
-
Brendan you explain to me how any jet fan who watched the preseason and hard knox thought that this team would be anything special.
-
Because it has the #1 defense, should have the #1 running game, and those two things are what the team rode to two road playoff wins.
-
The point is, how could anyone see something to say otherwise? Brendan’s exact points are what make this team special and they barely showed any of that. Hard Knocks is a drama. They have to focus on the personal side of things to create a dramatic show that football and non-football fans can watch.
-
-
OK, look on the bright side–the jets discovered a whole new scheme last night — the PREVENT OFFENSE.
-
lol thats pretty funny, sad, and very true. +1 with a heartfelt sob after rewarding that one.
-
-
Everything you said brendan about the camp is probably true but last nights game tells a different tale
-
What would make you think we will have the number 1 rushing team
-
Firing Schotty might help.
The offensive line was getting push up front, opening holes and the team averaged 5.5 yards per carry. Granted, they had two long runs (21 yards each by LT and B. Smith), but even if you throw those runs out (and Sanchez’s two “runs” that were really just plus-yard sacks) the team ran 17 times for 74 yards (4.3 YPC) which is good against this Ravens team. They just didn’t stick with it.
-
-
They did to sanchez what the yankees did to joba chamberlin they neutered them. And they (rex included)
-
Brendan have a great day buddy . Sorry man just my ballon popped last night .
-
sorry to hear that. I usually keep my balloon filled for 17 weeks+.
-
-
I still think Sanchez will be a decent QB. Lets face it, sanchez didn’t even play four years of college. Carroll was correct in his assumption that sanchez wasn’t ready for the NFL. This is one of the reason’s I predicted the jets to go 7-9 0r 8-8. I also don’t have any confidence in Greene either, Mr. injury prone and can’t hold on to the ball. Greene always seems to fumble at the worse times of the game, not want you want out of your lead running back.
-
The 5th pick and 50 million guaranteed for a DECENT qb oh boy!
-
Our defense looked nasty early on. Very physical. The DL-line and LBers played great. Flacco got the ball out just in time in some crucial spots and our DBs weren’t there to make the plays. They picked on cro and wilson big time, as they should have. Wilson got beat, but he looked better than Cro who played the ball ONCE!. That one time turned out to be a 70 yard INT return and that was it for him. PI’s, holding, never turning to look for the ball…horrible.
Special teams looked great. Braylon made a great play leapfrogging the center on the FG-attempt and thats just crappy luck that he got called on it. Leonhard looked great returning punts. Weathorford had some great punts too.
offense, offense offense…where to begin. Time and time again as we see with Schotty, he is either hit or miss. Sometimes he calls a great game as he did a few times last year, mixing up the plays and keeping the other team off balance. That was not last night. He was too fancy just to be fancy. Too many moving parts when it just wasn’t necessary at times. I don’t know if they got in Sanchez’s head or what, but he was VERY cautious. He did not play like that the first 3 weeks last year or in the playoffs. I saw him check down before even looking downfield. before even letting his WRs get out of their routes. Newsflash, the WRs won’t be open if you don’t give them time to get open. This was the exact opposite for Flacco. He had poor throws, but on his important completions, he waited just enough to let the play develop. That was not the case for Sanchez.
That said, everyone get off the ledge. This is not the end of the world. The team will address this. And the offense will improve. ’93 Cowboys started 0-2, so its not the end of the world.
-
kudos to ANDREW WEISS.
“if the way the defense and special teams play is playing like a Jet, then the offense is playing like a World War I biplane—a broken one.”
a better synopsis of the team has never been written on this site before. well done.
-
did woody lower the PSL’s?
-
Thats wonderful but we arent in the same stratusphere as the those cowboys. And i am worried that the coaching stafss lack of faith in sanchez will or has effected him negatively
-
This might be a crazy question but can Gruden be hired as an offensive coordinatior? The dude loves sanchez, even mentored him in the off season. He loves QB’s and even brought the bucs to the big dance with…im not even sure who was QB’ing. The biggest point of all on this move and to echo what this article was saying…he’s a rex ryan version of an OC.
-
Gruden was the hc of a sb team i dont think he would be an oc.
-
Better chance gruden is the next head coach of the jets
-
Jesus dude, relax. It’s ONE GAME. Against a SUPERBOWL CONTENDER. The offense was awful, they made a ton of mistakes, and they should have won the game still. It’s not the end of the world, or even the end of the season. One game.
-
-
I just meant that gruden would never take an oc job
-
Just dont want the same speeches if they are o and 2 because i am sure you all agree we cant go 0 and 2
-
brendan is a smart guy…. y’all can learn a thing or 2…
lets keep this simple with regards to lil schotty…
greene is cold…on bench alot in 2nd half…
2nd to last drive of the game from our own 8
LT for 18
LT for 6…he gets up after the 6 yd run pumped up / clapping his hands… he is the “hot RB”… lil shotty said he would go with who got hot..
SO WHAT DOES HE DO THEN?? subs out LT for greene…. then calls a shotgun on 2nd and 4, which greene goes out into the flat… gets the dump pass… and drops it..
at the game a guy behind me yelled “why take LT out he is hot” i turned to him and agreed… then of course our point was validated 20 secs later.
little things like that are lame… and proof of no feel for a game sometimes by schotty…
little things like that can decide games….
like crappy PI calls in the end zone by a crew that is known to call em….

I know it’s too early to panic….but I’m tired of hearing Sanchez say he’s going to do all the right things blah blah blah and play like he about to pee on himself…this hurts
