Ryan: Pride ‘Hurt a Little Bit’ By Jets D Performance

by Bassett on September 28th, 2010 at 11:01 am

Times writer David Caldwell writes notes that the Jets defense didn’t perform as well as expected against the Dolphins, and Rex Ryan is looking to address some issues this week before their matchup against the Bills in Buffalo this coming Sunday.

As much as Ryan appreciated how his offense performed in the 31-23 victory, the Jets’ defense — his defense — was pushed around, surrendering 363 passing yards.

“My pride’s hurt a little bit,” Ryan said, somewhat softly. “No question about that.”

[…]

“It sent a message to us that we’ve got to do a better job in the classroom,” Ryan said.

[…]

The way the Jets won was so scattershot, and so uncharacteristic for them, that Ryan sounded as if he did not want to endure something like that again. The offense, and quarterback Mark Sanchez and tight end Dustin Keller in particular, pushed the team this time.

While the defense didn’t have their best game, it would seem that there were a lot of competing factors at play here in how the Jets defense played against the Dolphins.

The Jets got out to an early lead, forcing the Dolphins to throw the ball to catch up.  Brandon Marshall was the one thing that the Jets were intent on doing their best to stop, which allowed Davone Bess and others to get the Dolphins offense back on track.  Without Revis & Pace, the Jets were limited in how much pressure they could bring up front to one of the league’s better offensive lines, and then how effective they could be in covering receivers.

Give Chad Henne enough time and he’ll find the open man.  The Jets weren’t able to apply pressure effectively, and it killed their secondary all night.

That’s where a player like Calvin Pace would be a huge asset.  While Bryan Thomas and Jason Taylor are playing quite well, imagine Thomas as the third OLB, and a rotation working between those three … they could be relentless

Jet-Dolphin games are always crazy…..key will be for them not to wet the bed this week against Buffalo….they need to stomp this team and get ready for Minny/Denver/GB. 3-0 in the division is huge….

  2. avatar zenlaw says:

Seriously, 3-0 in the division, with 2 wins coming on the road, would be amazing. I hope the Jets are ready for the Bills this week.

They will also face a serious challenge on MNF against the well-rested Vikings.

    • avatar Randy says:

Yea considering we would play the Dolphins and Bills at home,we have the advantage.Toughest game will be to win at Foxburo. That would be a huge statement game if we can win.We have a great chance to beat Buffalo and Dolphins at home.Hardest part was beating Miami at their stadium and we accomplished that.

  3. avatar tyrone says:

rex welcome to the jets and Dolfins or afc east .they are no stats here just wins and looses we all hate each other henne will not do that again .only jets and fins .believe we lost to david woodley in afc game in 82 season or AJ Duje .the mud bowl we had a great defense that year .we lost 14-0 and good offense .

  4. avatar WOJF says:

Last weeks defensive lapses might be a blessig in disguise, REX will make sure there is no let down on defense in the upcoming classic trap game.

Only way this stays close is if Schotty goes all conservative as he did during the Mangini years every time Jets played this team.

Then again, I predicted a 15-12 win last week with no touchdowns so clearly I have no clue wtf is going to happen anymore, for which I am very grateful because it shows they are not predictable.

    • “Last weeks defensive lapses might be a blessig in disguise, REX will make sure there is no let down on defense in the upcoming classic trap game.”

Agree 100%. To learn that lesson while winning is awesome. The D should be hungry on sunday.

  5. avatar gary says:

i felt the same way as rex after this game, yes we won but it was so far from jets football it scared me, im used to the d carrying us and the offense trying not to blow it and this game was the exact opposite. now down the line maybe i can come to expect this offense but right now i don’t think its anywhere near good enough to consistently put up games like this which is why i (rex too now) was scared by this performance because showed the d could have games like this. then again there’s a chance this was just the dolphins and this is what happens when we play them and now at least get to now destroy the bills (sanchez no longer has it in him to throw 6 picks) and move forward.

CAN’T WAIT TO GET REVIS, PACE, HOLMES BACK mnf vs. vikings with them three gonna be a lot of fun (im a fan allowed to look forward players better not)

    • avatar Brendan says:

That sucks, like him as a special teams guy, but whatever, he’s still just a depth guy, and John Conner can probably pull off the Jason Snelling if there’s an emergency.

      • avatar Dylan says:

Yeah I agree. Not a huge loss or anything. Just would have been nice to see him stick around. Do you think the Jets will activate McKnight if Greene is banged up?

        • avatar Brendan says:

If Greene can’t go…they kind of have to, no? Can’t go in with just one HB, unless they think Conner can come in and be a power runner (like I do).

I wouldn’t be surprised to see McKnight dressing for his first NFL game on Sunday, though.

          • avatar Dylan says:

Yeah, I could see them activating him, even if Greene is OK to play. If the Jets get out to a big lead (which is very possible), it might be a good time to give McKnight the ball, and give Greene and LT a breather. No need to have Turner AND Clowney active this week. I doubt the Jets need to throw the ball all that much against the Bills defense.

          • avatar Nick says:

They should have cut McSucks and kept Washington…even it he’s “just a depth guy”. Guy’s like Washington have a way of paying dividends.

            • avatar Brendan says:

              I disagree.

Washington is one of those “dime a dozen” guys. He’s a solid football player, runs hard, but he’s not very gifted physically and isn’t worth the risk of losing someone as immensely talented as McKnight.

McKnight is 22 years old. It’s remarkable how Jets fans have an actual example of jumping to conclusions right in front of their face (Gholston, who is now becoming a good player for this team), but are already going for the jugular with McKnight. He’s still an incredible return man, and he should improve at running the ball.

Jets fans are never satisfied. I’ve NEVER seen a 4th round pick take heat like this in my life. It’s ridiculous.

              • avatar Nick says:

                Two thoughts.

Comparing him to Gholston? VG, despite performing horribly, was always in shape and worked extreamly hard. People worried that he didn’t have the necessary skills. McKnight has the skills, he’s just a wadte of talent.

Secondly, you’ve never seen a 4th round pick get so much crap, because most 4th rounders who preform so badly are let go. Here you have a cash of hardworking guys being shown the door for a guy who doesn’t like to work. THAT is why we dislike the kid.

                • avatar brian311 says:

                  +1

                  perfect summary

also VG was the 6th overall selection in the draft, and was due a TON of guaranteed money. cutting him would have been pointless – we would have been paying a 23 year old kid millions of dollars NOT to play. mcknight is a completely different situation – it is not a valid comparison

              • avatar Ferraro41 says:

Well, there are a lot of factors contributing to this.

He was, for all intents and purposes, traded for Leon Washington, a pretty popular player.

The media made a big deal about his vomiting in mini-camp and failed conditioning test, both of which were probably no big deal but made a big deal by the media.

You had the fumbles in the pre-season games.

And then you had Hard Knocks, where you had Anthony Lynn constantly questioning him, Ryan cursing him on the sidelines, saying “nothing worse than a fumbler”, etc..

I am no way saying I agree with it, only saying that the combination of the above has more than fed the feeding frenzy over this kid.

                • avatar BamBam says:

I blame Herm for all of this!
If he never had bolted to KC mid-contract we’d never have drafted Leon and hence we wouldn’t be in this mess with McPuke. hehehe

              • avatar Brendan says:

Yes, comparing him to Gholston. Both were very young when they came into the league. Both were very, very raw. Both had unreasonable expectations.

People’s worries about Gholston involved passion, fire, love of football. Not physical gifts.

People’s worries about McKnight involve passion, fire, mental toughness. Not physical gifts.

                I think it’s a very fair comparison.

And, no, most fourth rounders are fourth rounders, so they’re either project players (like McKnight) or they’re depth guys. Occasionally you get a stud, but that’s rare. How do you know he doesn’t like to work? He was taking LT out to dinners/lunches in Cortland to pick his brain. He’s put in extra work quite often. His throw-ups were well documented as a product of him stressing himself out and not pacing himself in workouts. People dislike him because they wrongfully see it as “we traded Leon for this guy” when it’s “we actually got something for Leon before he left the team with them getting nothing in return”.

              • avatar BigKatt says:

                I totally agree with Brendan

    • I just saw the same thing. I wonder who they will sign to replace him.

      • avatar Dylan says:

Not sure who is available. Maybe they sign Brett Ratliff to the practice squad again. I think he was recently cut by the Jags, and they have two open spots.

  6. Request to Bent:
1.Could you please check if there was a difference in up front personnel between NE and Phins game on defence.
    2. And how we lined up against 2RB formations.
    3. Would like to know what was the general gameplan to control the front in running situation while still giving enough leverage to the secondary(which by the way sucked, and [to Basset] i would reverse the criticism between Leonhart and Cro. Cro did play well in “vertical” one-on-one, but when marshal was sent across/middle cut, the whole secondary didn’t know what to do, and i saw multiple times Cro in a position to make a play yet staying slightly back, for no particular reason leaving Jim on Marshall. – {I still didn’t review the film, though}

After watching 3 games i have the following impression of our secondary:

    1. #20 – i see him on the roster, but where is he on the field? I think they keep him in Bart Scott back packet(is he that short? he looks like that on the field for some reason) – though i give him the most slack, he is a rookie.

    2. #31 – can the dude keep his head in the game when he is not lined face to face against a receiver? Com’n with his physical skills he should dominate in all facets of the DB game. Study the fr**kin gameplan and listen to the coaches, stop being “little princess premadona”. Get your work ethics up dude, you should be a frk**n wolf out there.

    3. #24 @@@@ssss, we missed you in preseason, you “i am bigger than the team” “show me the money i could have gotten in July” goose head. Secondary has no communication, i also mentioned it after the first game and big thanks to you #24 for not being there in preseason and teaching the guys the system.

I think Rex will put personal attention on secondary few next games, let’s see the results.

Last note, love the mentality of our team: “Stand up for your own blood!”. (in reference to The Ex Beard and the team support)

  7. avatar JoeDog says:

Honestly, there were times when it seemed like the secondary was playing sandlot football. At first I thought they were trying to disguise coverages. Then I thought they didn’t have any to disguise….

  8. avatar SackDance99 says:

I said it before the season and I’ll say it again: the one weakness on this team is pass rush. Taylor if he only played in obvious passing downs would be a better weapon. I think playing so much has sapped his effectiveness. Getting Pace back will be huge. But, besides an aging Taylor and an above-average pass rusher in Pace, the Jets just don’t have that bona fide pass rusher that demands double teams. Losing Jenks, while having little negative effect on the run defense, hurts the pass defense because he always made good interior penetration and demanded double teams, which allows better blitz lanes for the safeties and LBs. When Revis is out, the secondary is exposed. One way to lessen that exposure is to put the QB on his back. As good as this defense is, it would be among the NFL’s best ever if the Jets had an Orakpo, Clay Matthews or DeMarcus Ware.

    • avatar Dylan says:

Thats definitely my biggest concern with this team. Revis and Jenkins both hurt the Jets pass rush. In order to pressure the opposing QB, the Jets need to blitz. That was the case last year, and it has been he case so far this year. You mentioned Jenkins being out hurting the pass rush. Revis being out hurts the pass rush just as much, because it forces them to choose between blitzing and leaving their CBs on an island, or giving Cromartie and Wilson safety help and giving the QB all day to throw. I think that was the biggest problem on Sunday. When Rex blitzed, Cromartie and Wilson got burned in one on one coverage. When the Jets didn’t blitz, Henne had all day to throw and eventually found an open receiver. Pace will definitely help us out a ton, and same with Revis.

      • Biggest problem on Sunday was Fish had a formidable run game that is very unconventional. Give fins just a little credit. The problem in the secondary was related to communication.

        To SackDance99:

We play very different defense from many conventional ones. We very often play nickel and dime packages with only two lineman and OLB(2 or 1) lining up right on the line. The line is very spread and there are a lot of motions between DB’s who line in the middle and ILB, sometimes they stay back and then rush, sometimes they come to the line and then drop back. For a conventional LB puss rusher one need a little more man power up front which we don’t use. We use holes in the line and offsets. Fish is one of few teams against which this becomes a very hard matchup, that is why Jenkins and very good communication in secondary is important for the team. (I am not saying talented puss rusher wouldn’t help this team thought).

        • What i meant someone like Jenkins along Pouha is important for the team in this game.

        • avatar Um says:

Are you joking or did you watch another game?

The fins had no run game, they were all passing.

84 yards running vs 352 passing for the phins.

          • Alright cranium, we didn’t defend the run, we mostly defended pass, we never acted like: “Hey, Henne bit us over air”. <<<— All sarcastic, check Phins other games, and just maybe we stopped that at the expense of pass??? Just maybe u will realize that if u put some of your grey matter in motion.

          • Your moderation, losers suck, i am pissed for the fact that you tried to cut the comment that had no bad language. And if that will happen one more time, I will make total fools out of you.

Comments are often flagged automatically for moderation by our spam filter for a multitude of reasons and sometimes at random. It happens to everyone, not just you, but we have to have a spam filter in order to keep trolls and spambots off the site. We don’t actually have moderators on call 24/7 so sometimes there’s a delay before a comment gets posted.

Was there really any need for the threat?

            - TJB

            • I have nothing against flaging comments, i support it, even though it is frustrating.

You can tell me “don’t like the channel, switch it”, but i do; i think your content contributors do a great job. But removing flagged comments cause one doesn’t wanna review them, is unprofessional. Read my last comment under “Watching U Still” it is no more offensive than what it was in reply to.

I feel insulted when i can’t have a freedom at even exchange of thoughts. And if that is not what you are promoting here, then what is the point of this site? – Your ego?

This site is featured on SNY, and has editors who are professional writers, hence has serious backing. But some of your moderators, through their behaviors set 2 tones: 1 – i am better than you and i will tell you what counts as a valid comment, 2 – i am so lazy to do my job, i will not even review the flagged comment and just delete them.

Take my previous comment not as a threat, but a cry from commenters , who are frustrated with the job of moderators, and i know few of such, who are regulars and very good guys.

              • avatar Bent says:

None of our editors or moderators are professional writers.

All comments flagged for moderation are posted to the site as soon as they are reviewed, unless they don’t meet the rule (example: namecalling).

The only comments from you that went to moderation that were not posted were duplicate comments because you posted the same thing several times.

I don’t know what you’re getting sensitive about. The only comments we don’t post are inappropriate ones. Sometimes we might accidentally delete a comment or a glitch might mean that it doesn’t post, but please don’t portray us as sitting in our ivory tower judging every single comment on whether it meets our superior intellect because that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Your threat was unnecessary. I hope you understand a little better now – this isn’t some witchhunt against you personally.

                • Lisa Zimmerman is a professional writer and if i am not mistaken has following to her resume:

                  Jets Correspondent at CBSSports.com

                  Publicist/Writer at Maguire Public Relations

I don’t take it as a personal witchhunt, but how about creating a web page which will state the moderation policy and refer complaints like mine to that page if it is warranted. Otherwise do the appropriate job of moderation without being overzealous.

This is not site of high school juniors. And should be a little more up on communication. I had questions in the past and sent them through email, but never got any replies EVER. If those methods of communication worked things would have been more simple.

                  • avatar Bent says:

Lisa does not edit or moderate for the site.

We have posted our comments policy many times and are actually in the process of adding something permanent to the site. It’s pretty straightforward though, basically be respectful.

Understand that from time to time comments will be blocked automatically even if nothing is wrong with them and there may sometimes be a delay, so many of the issues you are concerned about have little to do with our policy and are unavoidable. Thanks for your concern.

      • I think there’s little doubt that whenever the next draft/offseason comes around, a REAL edge rusher will be high on our list. Then again, a lot of us thought that was the case this year. Maybe when Pace is back and Taylor plays less, we’ll be better able to rattle the QB.

      • avatar Ferraro41 says:

Just wait until they are able to get Pace, Taylor and Thomas on the field at the same time. I think we’ll see a lot more consistent pressure.

I think the other thing that is interesting is how teams are attacking our blitz. It seems like as soon as they see our guys coming, the QB knows he’s got single coverage, and so they are simply throwing the ball up for grabs, letting their receivers either try and come down with the ball, or draw a PI penalty. Flacco must have done this 15 times against us. Brady tried it with Moss. Henne did it with Marshall numerous times.

I think my biggest concern is our 3rd down defense. Last year we led the league in 3rd down conversion percentage. This year, I’ve lost count as to how many 3rd and 8+ yards we’ve allowed to be converted, either by penalty or botched coverage. If we would have stopped even half of those conversions, we’d easily be 3-0.

  9. avatar WW85 says:

I think Woodhead & Washington are prime examples of NOT doing HK. It advertised those guys. What are the odds those guys got signed if every GM hadn’t seen them on HK?

Losing Washington sux. He is a solid football player & he’s ready to play. Unlike $$Mcknight who just kinda won’t be ready for at least a year.

  10. avatar Bill C says:

Washington was a dollar and cents issue. Washington was driving a hard bargain before the 2009 season. He had a multi year deal with some guaranteed money but they were $5M apart. He took a chance and got hurt. The Jet don’t want to pay him a top starter salary when he only gets 10-12 touches a game. That is why they traded him.

Washington was my favorite player. I think Tanny sometimes focuses too much on $$$.

  11. avatar Bill C says:

I think McKnight was a bad call. He will never replace Washington. Pete Carroll picked before the Jets and he did not pick McKnight. That was very telling because Seattle had a need.

C wash is a 52nd-55th player on a .500 football team. Save your anxiety for something else.

  13. One other approach, away from this week’s conventional wisdom–

I was extremely proud of the Defense on Sun. night, actually.

Look what they gave up: 2 TDs, a 3-yd flick to Fasano and an 11-ydr. to Marshall; 3 FGs, 44, 20, 50. 23 pts. is pretty standard NFL fare — twenty NFL teams scored 20+ pts this weekend. So, by that criterion, we ended up OK. Sure, it was really scary as it unfolded, but that’s what made this such an exciting game to watch!

This was gut-check, hang-on, bend-but-don’t-break defense at its best by a D that was clearly over-matched, esp. vs. a world-class giant at WR, and short a world-class CB, a world-class NT and an excellent OLB/rusher, forcing almost everyone out of position, with a rook in a key position where you couldn’t hide him or protect him.

Then, despite getting pushed up and down the field all game, and having the WORST time getting their OWN stuff straightened out on the field, they still held the Phins off, denying them the big plays that would have killed the Jets. This ‘terrible’ Jets D also smothered the vaunted Phin running game, shutting down the WildPhin entirely. And they made game-saving plays at the end, stiffening as much as needed for as many plays as they had to as Miami was rolling downhill to score a potential tying TD & 2-pt. conversion.

They knew what they had to do and had the cojones to do it.

    Bravo, gentlemen!

You provided some amazing couch screaming opportunities…

  14. avatar Randy says:

Problem I seen with the defense was we weren’t getting to the QB fast enough. That can be expected since we covered more without Revis and without Pace, other guys didn’t blitz.Adding Revis allows us to use Safety blitz.Adding Pace would help the pass rush.2 very important additions.Harris and Scott are cover Linebackers.Bryan Thomas has never been a Blitz linebacker.JT and Ellis were the only guys who could get to the QB.Adding Pace will be a huge boost.I would consider starting Taylor over Thomas IMO.That gives us 2 Pass rushers on the outside with Harris and Scott controlling the middle.

    • avatar Revis Christ says:

are you kidding ….. bryan thomas is playing lights out in the run game hes been crushing rbs and he has been getting to the qb when asked to i think the best scenerio is pace and thomas start and jt comes in for added pass rush that senerio cna work beautifully cause the oline will have to pay attention to both PACE and JT leaving single coverage on ellis and thomas plus we could bring a saftey or harris/scott

      • avatar Randy says:

I never noticed Bryan Thomas getting to the QB,but I guess the man thing is we need Pace to help the blitz.

        • BT got to flacco along with ellis on the first play in the ravens game, and has been close a number of other times.

          • avatar Randy says:

Yea I looked that up and forgot he had a sack on Flacco.LOL I already mentally blocked out that horrible game against Baltimore.Things have certainly changed since then.Who would have known that losing Jenkins, losing the game, and getting criticized all week would eventually change like it has today. Now we sit in 1st place and Sanchez has Top 10 Qb numbers right now with No Interceptions and the jets offense has become as good as it has the last 2 games. If this keeps up we are in for a great season.

        • avatar Bent says:

BT had 10 pressures in the first two games, I believe.

  15. avatar larryjet says:

it is so obvious that we lack a true edge rusher (and have since abraham) that revis’ (and pace’s) value is greatly increased and was evident sunday. Jason taylor is our best pass rusher, that’s a problem.

    • Let’s say you have a single great pass rusher. How will he do anything, if the opposing team will put two people on him by maybe adding a TE. On teams like Giants you have few guys up front who already require a double team. Thus teams will have to pick their poison with guys like Strahan and such. But when we have 5-6 guys in the box as opposed to conventional 7 any great puss rusher will have his numbers go down due to double team. There are downs and other situations(offensive formations and such) when the rusher has high chance to succeed, but not against the team like Phins, who have up to 3 additional people on line/back.

  16. avatar larryjet says:

Gholston was an attempt to resolve that. oh well, we will try again.

  17. avatar Joe B. says:

Not that I care, but the Jets DROPPED one spot in the ESPN power rankings. The Bears, who have been completely gifted two out of their three wins, are now ahead of them. ESPN is such a joke.

    • avatar Randy says:

How did we drop a spot?I checked AOL and they had us moving up a spot just behind Saints,Colts,Bears and Steelers.I can live with that.BTW I think the Bears will be a good team in the NFC and I would be shocked if the Bears didn’t beat the Giants this week. This is a great week to watch football as a Jet fan.

Anybody know if Joe McKnight is a lost cause? Does he show anything in practice? Did he come into camp so out of shape, that for this season, he will never catch up? Is he immature and not ready to compete at the NFL level? Is there no hope for the future? Does not playing or even not being included on the active roster even bother him? Anybody have any current

I can’t believe this, but the Jets are really getting a ton of respect by the same fans that said they were overated.Everytime I go to NFL.com I see comments bashing the Jets ALL THE TIME, but the last 24 hours or so,I have seen nothing but praise.People are really starting to view the Jets as a legit team in the NFL and what is funny is the Dolphin Fans are actually giving us props.I knew the Dolphins game was huge, but I never realized how big a win it actually was. Finally the Jets are getting credit for their win.I have yet to hear an excuse for the Jets yet. That Dolphin game was a real statement game that the Jets are for real and are not Overated like most people wanted to say.I am starting to think that Sanchez playing better has a lot to do with people changing their opinion about the Jets. Most people doubted Sanchez was good enough but thus far he has been good.Let’s hope the Jets keep it up.

    @ Randy,

It all starts with Sanchez, no matter how well the D plays, we only go as far as Sanchez takes us. So far the ride has been fun.

      +1

Sanchez is really the guy that controls how far we go,but we also need the defense to play better than it did against Miami.Revis really is the difference maker when he is 100%.Last years AFC Championship proved that even if Sanchez has a good game, you still need the defense to step it up.I do believe we improved our secondary but Cromartie and Kyle Wilson have to really step it up.I believe they have been good for us,but we need more from them.Revis really is missed though.

A great pass rusher is always double-teamed and often faces max protect. Yet, great pass rushers still get to the QB. Watch Dwight Freeney, Ware or tape on Dumervill. I had the privilege of watching both the Sack Exchange and LT every Sunday growing up. Nothing prevented guys like Gastineau and LT getting double-digit sacks. Rex’s blitz schemes are done out of necessity because he doesn’t have a bona fide pass rusher. If Rex had a Ware or Matthews, his entire blitz schemes would be based on disguising where they would blitz from and that would cause even more hesitation and confusion by the offense. Remember, Rex often overloads one side, but if the other side had a Ware rushing, what’s the offense going to do? If Rex had a bona fide pass rusher in his toolbox, along with a healthy Revis, the Jets would be near impossible to pass against.
