Link: Football Outsiders on LT’s Rebirth

Those of you fortunate enough to be in possession of an ESPN Insider account may be interested in Football Outsider’s assessment of LaDainian Tomlinson. Doug Farrar not only remarks on the inconceivability of Tomlinson’s resurrection, but also argues that it could not have come with any other team:

Through his first four games, though, Tomlinson is averaging a ridiculous 6.1 yards per carry, and his per-game total of 85.3 yards is over 30 yards better than his 2009 total and his best since 2007. As it turned out, the Jets knew how to not only spot a bargain in the backfield, but how to create one as well. It’s safe to say that had Tomlinson gone to almost any other team, he would not have seen these incredible results.

Again, you’ll need an Insider account to read this. If, like me, you find yourself locked out, why not read Bassett’s earlier recap of Football Outsider’s fine Jets analysis?

he’s exactly right when he says we’re the only team that could’ve made this happen. best run-blocking line in the NFL. turning supposedly washed up backs into BEASTS is our specialty.

big props to 60, 68, 74, 65, and 67. and bill callahan for making it all happen.

    LT. Great story.

    Devin thomas anyone?

Our Offensive Line can really help any running back which is why I always have to make the debate that the Jets may have the best Offensive Line in Football.Without a great offensive line, there is no way we reach the AFC Championship with a rookie QB.You seen Thomas Jones become a lead rusher when he came here from Chicago and we are seeing the OLD LT once he came here to the Jets.Shonn Greene even looks good with the OLine.Anywhere else and he would be struggling right now.As far as Greene goes btw, these Experts have got to stop hating this guy.He is now a Split back and he did rack up 110 Plus yards last week.

Haterade . I saw this a mile away I was pumped when we got LT

  6. avatar Tom B says:

anyone that thought LT was washed up never watched Chargers games, and had no understanding of the (negative)impact Norv Turner has had on that team.

I thought LT was washed up, suspecting that his body was breaking down. If he stays healthy, behind our OL,no question that he can have a pro-bowl year.

  8. i think it has alot to do too with not having the pressure of being the face of the franchise and that if he did well it would a bonus… so injury for the first time in 2 years plus him having pressure free fun equals RESURRECTION!!!

  9. now that he is a jet i can now say that visor is bad ass

I never expected him to be this good but I wrote an article back in June when all the people, specifically the stat guys, were bashing the signing. I think what I wrote has pretty much held true and LT being good is not a shock. This good is a shock, but he was going to be pretty good in this offense no matter what.

L.T. went from possibly the worst O-line in the league to the best. And man with those recieving skills does he spread the defense out or what. Rex knew what he was doing when he replaced TJ for LT. Green and Conner can wear defenses down and LT is the perfect compliment to those bruisers. The rest of the league has got to fear this team.

As one of the most vocal opponents of the LT acquisition, I have been pleasantly surprised.

But my criticism of the move was two fold, one I thought his talent was gone, and the other I did not think he (and Greene) would hold up over the 16 game schedule the way TJ did.

I willingly eat crowe on the talent comment, but whethar he and Greene can hold up over the 16 game schedule remains to be seen.

That said, the emergence of Sanchez and excellent play of Edwards has made that less important than I thought it would be, so right now it appears Mr. T made an excellent move (man that crowe tastes horrible, choke, gag….)

I was not happy with letting TJ go and picking up LT. I had always been a big fan of LT’s but, we knew what we had in TJ and we weren’t sure what we would get with LT. Now that LT has stepped up and shown that he is still a factor, I love having him on the team. He is still one of the most dangerous backs in the game. His ability, to catch the ball out of the backfield, totally opens up the field for the Jets. Schottenheimer has to feel like a kid in a candy shop.

I was a skeptic on getting LT because of his past workload. But, I was never a huge fan of TJ and thought, all things being equal, why not go with the aging RB who is a first-ballot HOFer, more versatile and a redzone monster. Plus, we all expected LT to be better with a better OL, but I never expected LT to look this good. He’s just a tad slower than his HOF career peak. Adding that LT to this team, which was already an excellent running game, has improved the running game, while with Sanchez’s maturity, Edwards’ comfort in the system, Keller’s progress into an All-Pro and, now, Holmes, the passing game is also improved. If the offense continues to improve in all phases, this team will get more dangerous as the season goes on.
