Decisions, decisions
FLORHAM PARK–The word of the day? Hydrate. Every single player who was asked about the trip to Denver parroted back that they’ve been told to hydrate. The team will also fly out a day early, on Friday rather than Saturday, and remain on East Coast time in order to best combat both the altitude and time difference.
The question of the hour, will Darrelle Revis, not to mention Calvin Pace, be on that plane on Friday? Rex Ryan has now taken that decision out of the players’ hands. Last week, once the doctors had cleared him, Ryan left it up to Revis. This week, he has reversed that process. “”It’s going to be on my shoulders,” he said. “Every other decision is made by me, with a lot of other opinions. Why wouldn’t I make this decision.”
Basically, he is taking this decision off his players’ shoulders, which frankly is fair. While it’s nice to put it in the player’s hands, players want to play so it’s better to have someone else take that burden.
Ryan also said that after reviewing tape of the game, by the end of the game, Revis was not the same player he normally is, or that he even was at the beginning of the game. He was not finishing plays and was clearly hobbled by the hamstring at that point.
As for Pace, he told me that he actually felt better coming back from the broken foot than he did coming back after his suspension last year. Part of that, likely, was that he wasn’t around the facility at all during the suspension and he’s been here every day rehabbing his foot. ”It was more about my eyes,” he said, “and being able to see stuff.”
Mark Sanchez is relieved to have escaped Monday night without an interception. His fellow quarterbacks agree and have chalked it up to good fortune. “I was late on a couple and I lucked out,” he said. He acknowledged that overall his decision-making is much better this year as opposed to last year when he had a tendency to try to force things and made bad decisions as a result. “If that was my worst game,” he said referencing Monday night. “We’ll be OK.”
Funny conversation with Wayne Hunter. He is now wearing a carbon fiber sleeve on his right shin to protect it after getting hit with a helmet a couple of weeks ago. (That’s not the funny part). His return made them able to once again run what they call their “Jumbo” package, which is when Hunter reports as eligible. They scaled back on it while he was out. It’s primarily a blocking role although there is a possibility that he could be one of the checkdowns. Hunter joked however, that if Sanchez got that far down in his checkdowns, he’d probably reload and go back to the first one.
There was one time when that wasn’t the case. “Last year, against New England, at New England, ” he said. “We were on the goal line. I was the first and only checkdown. It was me or nothing.” So what happened? The “little” defensive back was called for pass interference. Hunter never even got his hands up and the ball sailed over his head. He doesn’t remember who the back was, and I just don’t have time before filing this to try to find out. I’m sure one of you out there is going to know this.
As for who has been filling in for him in the Jumbo package, that would be Matt Mulligan. Although, according to laughing Hunter, “The play wasn’t as big as usual, literally or figuratively.”
And, Mulligan’s rebuttal? He admitted that Hunter was right. In fact, he said with a grin, they renamed the package when he’s in it, “medium Jumbo.” Mulligan did assert in a tangential conversation that the tight end meeting room is one of the best. Just so you know.
It’s still a little unclear what exactly happened with Drew Coleman, who will start if Revis doesn’t play. He said he was fine after the game, and originally we were told he had cramps. However, today, Ryan said that he got punched in the stomach. “It was a standing eight count.”
Jim Leonhard is on the injury report with a biceps issue, although he practiced fully. Ryan also merrily shared that in addition to the biceps, at some point Leonhard “got smacked in the face by Eric Smith.” Let’s all assume that this was an accident.
Santonio Holmes denied reports that he has ever taken money from an agent.

He hasn’t played football since August, and then he went out and played almost the entire game. He’s sore, as you would imagine. Ryan said there were no structural setbacks to the foot or anything.
-
Only thing I had heard was that he was sore after the game. I figured everybody was.
-
-
I listened to an interview with Josh Luchs and he said that he did NOT give Santonio Holmes any money.
-
if you read the si article that wasn’t the issue, it was that when luchs spoke to holmes, santonio had said another agent was already supporting (paying) him
still though im nowhere near knowing any facts about this just merely stating the facts that have been presented to me so far
-
Why do we even care? Everyone involved in college football makes a lot of money on it (or would like to) except the kids who play.

I say let Revis sit this week, get him warmed up for GB. Doesn’t sound like he’s as hurt as he was after the New England game. Denver’s a passing offense which kinda worries me but it comes down to pressure pressure pressure on the QB. I’d feel better knowing that Coleman is 100% by gametime. Did I just say that?!? Rex is a hell of a coach!

Great Week review. FInally gave us some respect in the power rankings.

I wouldnt play Revis until the bengals game. Maybe a few snaps in the in the Texans game. we can stand to lose a game or 2 until then. Our only competition will be Green Bay and Texans. That should give him 5 weeks to heal
-
Let’s just sit him the whole season. Get him in nice game shape for the playoffs. Wait a minute, that’s too risky. Let’s just rest him and his $11 million salary until the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl. That’s when he’ll be totally ready to contribute.
Hamstrings can flare up at any time, and the reason this injury came to be is he wasn’t playing ENOUGH. There’s absolutely no guarantee he’s going to be 100% at all this season, no matter how many weeks of rest he gets. The dude needs to play if he’s not seriously hindered. Take the Denver game and the bye if necessary, but he has to be (and should be) ready to go in the Green Bay game.
There’s no tissue damage, it’s just inflamed. The idea that he needs to miss another MONTH AND A HALF to get ready is a total joke.

What wrong with Calvin Pace???
-
Of course Revis should rehab now. The X country trip is tough enough healthy. Let him sit in NY & rehab for 2 weeks.
-
they should have let Mevis sit out the whole year…

Sooooo tired of hearing the Revis name. It’s been the whole year. Enough already.
Rex screwed up when he first said that playing after an injury is up to the player in Revis’ case. Until then, it was always up the coach after the player was cleared by medical staff.
And now the media won’t drop it. At today’s news conference they grilled and cross-examined Rex like prosecuting attorneys. He barely had time to mention any of the other 52 players. It sounds like the media believes it’s Revis and 52 others not worth mentioning.
Here’s an FYI for the media: I want to here about the Jets. We are entering Week 6, Revis has yet to make a meaningful impact and we are winning. Focus on that!
Let’s make a deal. If you focus on team preparation for the upcoming game, you can run another 500 stories on Revis over the Bye Week. Enough to make everyone puke.

how about shawm merriman you guys think he will work out
-
i would love to take a chance on shawne merriman…this would give us great depth and the option to move guys like thomas and taylor around the line nd really give a new dimension on 3rd down..go get shawn!!

I’m glad to see Rex taking control of the Revis situation. I thought it was a poor move giving the player the official final say on whether or not he’d play and the subsequent breaking of the news on Revis’ twitter was just ridiculous. Obviously if Revis says he can’t go, you don’t play him, but to tell the media and everyone else that they OK’ed him and they were waiting for HIM to sign off on it, it just looked weak.

Your JoeDog is packed and ready for Denver. He’s prepared to hydrate himself on Denver’s local beers. Like all his fellow Jets fans, JoeDog may have lost a game or two, but he never lost a party….

Its not vacation time. Play Revis. Everybody plays who can play. Play your best win the game.

Just because Revis isn’t 100% doesn’t mean he should sit out.Is he is say 75-80 percent, than play him in less plays, thats all.Players play hurt all the time and they are limited.Same should go for Revis. How can he expect to get in game shape if he is sitting every other game he plays. At this point if he is healthy enough, you play him.Just monitor Revis from play to play.If he is only playing in 2 snaps out of every 4, so be it.
-
-
I have a feeling Revis will be playing this week though. The fact he was limited in practice said a lot about how hurt he really was.Sure he is sore, but that is expected.Same thing happens to Starting pitchers, which is why they get 5 days rest.

Long time, first time.
I spent the last two weeks hating Darelle Revis. I couldn’t understand why the media hasn’t been all over his me-first mentalilty. I feel like its been that burning spit on back of every (same old) jet fan’s tongue every time he hears “if” and “100%” in the same sentence. I mean we’re paying him, right?
Rex just reminded me why he’s an awesome coach.

The girls look well hydrated!

I used to live in Denver. The altitude does make a slight difference. But mostly for out of shape people. Sure for well tuned athletes it might give the Broncos a slight edge. But the only time I see the altitude affecting the Jets is if the Jets defense is continously on the field towards the end of the game. However the Broncos rushing game sucks and the passing game won’t be as taxing on the Jets D. Plus the Jets offense will dominate time of possession.
If you want to see how altitude affects the body drive 2 hours west of denver into the mountains. The closest mountain is Winter Park. The base elevation of that mountain is twice as high as Denver and the top of the mountain is 12,000+ feet. I have been up there with my snowboard and walking is taxing. Also you get alcohol intolerance in the mountains. A couple of beers give you a nice buzz.

Off topic… Anyone headed to Devnver for the game? If so, would like to meet up with fellow TJB JETS fans prior to the game for some tailgaiting….

AWWW MAN!! I am eating crow right now I dont believe in sanchez but he is doing his thing, but 2 of these games have been very close to go either way, but anyway sanchez I will give you some cool points, but I still have a gripe he is laced with a bunch of weapons I mean laced and a good off line WHY WASNT CLEMMENS GIVEN THESE WAEPONS AND OFF LINE THE GAMES HE PLAYED!!!!

lol

Look at the Tampa Bay game last year for why

You know, Revis may be a knucklehead, but he is OUR knucklehead.Let’s not forget how great this guy was last season. He was the singe reason why our defense was as good as it was last season. We wouldn’t have made it that far without him. understand the holdout situation clouded everything, but you know what…that is not all in the past.Us as Jet fans have got to support the guy.We really need to defense what he stands for and that what he did last season wasn’t a fluke.Other than Jet fans, everyone else thinks this guy is overated. They would kill to have a player like Revis on their team, if they knew how good this guy really is when he is healthy. If us Jet fans don’t defend Revis, than nobody will.He gives the Jets a legit Superstar and we can’t be the type of fans that want to bring him down.I trust in Revis and WE as Jet fans should all trust in Revis.
-
He’s a grown man, he doesn’t need us to say nice things about him, he needs to get healthy and get his ass on the field because his behavior since January hasn’t hurt anybody but Jet fans. People say he’s overrated? How can that be false if he’s not on the field? No Jet fans want to ‘bring him down’. Obviously he’s been a great player for us and once he’s on the field we all want him to do as well as possible, but he’s given us nothing other than headaches since 0:00 in the AFC Championship, so why are we the ones who have to go out of our ways to stick up for him?
-
Good point Joe B. I can’t defend any of Toasty’s actions either. He made the bed, now he must sleep in it, which is probably what he does all day when he doesn’t make the road trips.
If somebody would just just give Toasty a Snickers Bar then maybe he could shed the diva attitude.Go JETS!!!!!

If Rex puts Revis on the field befor he,s 100%.. then rex needs to be spanked…..next six game is part the of a easyer sch…….
-
Just read that revis felt better in yesterdays practice. They guy won’t be 100% by sitting, he’s not hurt its normal for him to be sore 1st game back just like Pace.
I think we should play him on a limited basis, by halftime we will have this game in the bag!! Then he can sit if we don’t need him. Broncos can’t hang with us. Were going to have a field day with their Defense lol
Their offense doesn’t scare me neither, their dead last in rushing, and we just STOPED PETERSON!!! Who cares if they can Pass the ball, they haven’t played a team like us yet, and their reported to be terrible at stopping the blitz! And that’s all we do
Pressure on the QB stops everything! -
Something none of us have talked about:
Revis has never been hurt before. He’s never missed a snap until this year, so it’s very possible that he didn’t know what playing on a gimpy hamstring would be like.
It’s the right move for this decision to fall on Rex. Obviously, if Revis says he can’t go then it’s an easy answer. But even if Revis is foaming at the mouth to get out there, it’s still Rex’s call. The Jets are 1/3 of the way through the regular season (with hopefully 3-4 games after that) so resting Revis should be a serious consideration.
I need to take a deep breath before this next statement.
Ok, one more.
Because of how well Drew Coleman is playing, the Jets can afford to sit Revis this week.
My hands were trembling while typing that, as if they knew it was blasphemous.
But when it comes down to it, whether you love him or hate him, this team needs Revis to beat Indy. Maybe put Revis out on obvious passing downs, but keep him out on early downs to stop some of the physical beating he’d take on run plays.
Either way, Kyle Orton is an elite passer in this league (there go those trembling hands again) and the Jets need to bring their A game. Take this team lightly and the Jets are 4-2 instead of 5-1 and flying high into the bye week.
-
Remember that the broncos just faced a very tough ravens team last week. I think McDaniels will prepare for the jets (who have have the same physical presence as the Ravens) this time around. Ryan better lay off on some of the blitzes this week.
-
I also don’t understand why everyone has forgotten the 2008 game against the broncos. The broncos can put up points. Sanchez has not won a game for the jets in the fourth quarter or overtime fo the jets. I think the broncos will put up several points in the first half.
-
Because they were coached by Shanahan and had Hay Cutler at QB?
-

What’s wrong with Pace?Did he re-injure himself?
