Always something going on, on Friday

by Lisa Zimmerman on November 19th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

FLORHAM PARK–Jerricho Cotchery and Marquice Cole were dressed and joined the team for early warm-ups on Friday, but then moved off to the side to work with the training staff. Both have been ruled out for Sunday.

Cotchery is disappointed but he’s learned his lesson from rushing back from a hamstring injury last year. “You’ve got to move yourself out of the way,” he said of letting the doctors and trainers make the decision for him to sit. He said he feels a lot better. He’s not in any pain but has some lingering sensitivity. He was able to do some running today, but just straight ahead, no cutting. He said he worked this week as if he was getting ready for Sunday and has made a lot of progress. It remains to be seen if he’ll be ready for the Bengals game on Thanksgiving.

Dwight Lowery is also out with the concussion. He’s getting better but there’s no timetable on his return.

David Harris and Brad Smith were added to the injury report. Harris with a calf, Smith with a lower back. Ryan said both are probable.

Joe McKnight may get playing time not only on special teams, but on defense as a cornerback…

Rex Ryan confirmed that the Jets will elevate Patrick Turner. They cut Jarron Gilbert on Thursday to make room. Ryan spoke highly of the work Turner has done recently in practice. Ryan said that Turner pushed Darrelle Revis so hard in the practices leading up to the Detroit Lions game (Turner was imitating Calvin Johnson as part of the scout team) that they gave Turner a game ball after the win.

Now, if you want to talk about your slow days…as the media was walking through the field house on our way to the locker room, we noticed one player, not currently a member of the team, doing what looked like a workout in front of a number of coaches, scouts and front office people.  The team holds tryouts on a regular basis. However, we’re not usually around to see them. Now I had something to do. My mission: find out the guy’s name. I did have a clue, Braylon Edwards, who had been walking through the field house as well, went up to this person and greeted him warmly. OK, so likely a former Cleveland Browns player or a former University of Michigan player.

One of my fellow writers was also on the hunt. That person cleverly enlisted the help of a spy, however I trumped them. Braylon Edwards returned to the locker room and I made a beeline for him. The mystery tryout player was…linebacker Shawn Crable, most recently of the New England Patriots, and a former teammate of Edwards at Michigan.

The rest of the media and the PR staff basically laughed and pointed at me as I raced around grilling one player after the next before Edwards ultimately showed up. Of course, the exercise turned out to be entirely for naught when Crable himself showed up and sat down at an empty locker between Bart Scott and Damien Woody.

The team plays the Patriots in two weeks so they may, in fact, sign him. All Ryan would say in response to questions about Crable was, “He was really tall. Tall, skinny kid.”

The sideline at practice on Friday morning was lined with members from all five branches of the United States Military, plus members of the New Jersey National Guard as the Jets hosted them for their Military Appreciation Day.

As I’ve previously reported, on Fridays, Ryan picks non-kickers to perform kicking duties at the end of practice. Today he selected one of the military personnel. The players I spoke to who watched him warming up said his form looked really good and they thought he was going to make it. Unfortunately, it went just slightly wide right. However, there was a strong wind blowing, to which most players I spoke to attributed his failure.

Based on this, I unearthed another fascinating tidbit. One time, during his days at Pepperell High School in Lindale, Georgia, defensive end Marcus Dixon was forced into kicking duties due to the absence of the team’s real kicker. It did not go well. “I was one for five in point after attempts,” he said. “When I finally made one, the other team started clapping for me.”

It may have been his technique. “I was a straight-on kicker,” he said. And then laughed, “But, I can throw the ball. Rex really likes my spiral.” Watch out Mark Sanchez.

Shaun Ellis shared with me that he feels he would make a really good gunner on special teams. I shared with him the fact that Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff calls them flyers.

Don’t know if id’s classify Crable as “a former teammate of Edwards at Michigan.” Crable was a 4 yr player @ Michigan who was drafted 08, and played from 04-07. Edwards came out 3 yrs earlier in 05, and played from 01-04, so at best made them teammates for 1 year. If anything, Edwards was showing some love to a former Maize and Blue and Crable’s more concrete link to the Jets would be to David Harris, who he played next to for 2 years and was drafted in 07.

But as a Michigan fan, Crable was a beast in college. he practiced daily against Henne and Long. Don’t know what happened to him in the pro’s. Maybe he’ll figure it out as a Jet and stick.
