Fun With Design: Nike “Pro Combat” 2012 Protos

by Bassett on November 19th, 2010 at 11:30 am

If you’ve not heard the news, in 2012 Nike will be providing uniforms and sideline apparel to the NFL.  Rather than be good sports about the news, Nike took the opportunity to spit on Reebok’s proverbial grave by saying ”we plan on changing the NFL jersey dramatically just like we’ve done with the college programs, using new thinking and the greatest technology available. The NFL program hasn’t had the same type of advancement in recent years.”  Boom. Roasted.

So while many have wondered just what Nike might try and do, an intrepid designer took to the idea of creating his own Nike Proto “Pro Combat” unis that have been bouncing around teh Internets for a few days now, here’s a link to a series of images.  Also, a quick check to what they’ve done in NCAA would lead one to believe, that they’re not going to get as radical as they would like to think they are.
While some are creative, and I do like the Jets re-imaging, I can’t imagine the NFL allowing some of these designs – some of which are almost arena league-ish in nature to pass muster.  Look at the new Chargers uni … ee-yikes.  Or take a look at the Patriots, a uniform which would have hundreds of American flags symbolically touching the ground during every single game.  Sorry, not gonna happen in the very patriotic NFL.
Thanks to Chris and Jesse for sending these in.

  2. avatar mikebe1 says:

saw this during our miami game i love them all except the pats jerseys

  3. avatar Eric K says:

Were Green not black. That simple.

    • avatar Barbella says:

      Erik K,

I totally agree. Green and White, not Black. Sames goes for the Mets. The new batting helmets make me nauseous.

      nau·seous/ˈnôSHəs/Adjective

      1. Affected with nausea; inclined to vomit.
      2. Causing nausea; offensive to the taste or smell.

On a good note, the Dolphins uni has the same effect on me.

  4. I don’t like the black. Especially the black helmet. I do like the switch to the old logo

    • Mister Way,

You’re too young to know, but:

What we’re using now IS THE OLD LOGO.

That ’80s monstrosity took us forever to get rid of. We screamed and screamed to get our REAL Jets unis back again.

It’s like the Yankees (whom I hate, but admire). When you have an identity, you don’t go changing it. Your look is a major part of your brand. When you’re nobody, hey, what could hurt being somebody else for a while? But you’re still “nobody.”

These Nike unis are the ugliest crap I’ve ever seen. Just as my nausea was pushed down, I’d see the NEXT team — and they were even uglier. The Jets version is a nightmare. They say four things, very loudly:

      1) Arena football!!!!!!!!!!
      2) Battle of the Network Gladiators!!!!!!!!
      3) UGLLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!

and, even worse for the 32 owners…

      4) USFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. avatar AKA Jack says:

One word for going back to the late ’70s helmet logo, no.

  6. avatar deuce4417 says:

green and whit wit hsome black accents would look much sharper. i’ve always liked black, think it fits out team too.

  7. avatar Max says:

Nike goes a little overboard with these Pro Combat unis. I don’t like the incorporation of black into the jets uni. Our colors are green and white, no amount of black is gonna make us look “tougher”. If the current design was updated than I’d be all for it but I don’t think it needs to be completely reinvented.

  8. avatar Brendan says:

I would like Nike try to tell the Bengals they’re playing in what can only be described as “Bassett’s kid got orange and black markers and drew all over a jersey”. For Bassett’s lil’ guy it’d be a nice work of creative art. But for a multi-billion dollar sports empire, what in the blue hell is that?

Some of these would probably look good. A lot of them would piss off their fans.

  9. avatar zep says:

Horrible!! I hate a black jets jersey its sickening.

They tried wayyyy to hard with all of these jersey’s, this isn’t college NIKE sorry.

I do like the older jets logo though!

    and thats about it…….

  10. I can deal w/ the Uni changes… but NO WAY do I want them to go back to the late-70′s/ 80′s Jets helmet logo… there’s just too much of a bad taste in my mouth whenever I see that damn logo!

  11. avatar juunit says:

What they need to be worried about, is redesigning the helmet itself and making it safer for the players on the field. That way we can put all this concussion crap behind us and get Goodell off his high horse.

    • avatar Brendan says:

You can’t design a helmet to prevent concussions. The aspect of fast-moving players and stopped momentum (because of big hits) will always be part of the game. The day they change that, is the day I stop watching. But you can’t create a helmet that prevents the brain from shifting inside the skull (the cause of concussions).

      • avatar juunit says:

Not completely, no. But you can definitely improve it and you can improve it very simply. They may not be fashion statements, but just add more padding to the helmets. It’ll make the helmets bigger, but who cares? So they’ll look stupid the first season, then they just become normal. They should also put padding on the OUTSIDE of the helmets to decrease the impact. Again, helmets aren’t fashion statements, and they could easily be made safer. Or maybe they could make disposable helmets. When a car gets into an accident, it crumples to take the impact and protect everything inside of it. Why not have helmets that do the same thing?

        • avatar Brendan says:

See that’s a risk/reward discussion as well. You’re making helmet bigger, meaning they’ll carry more weight and have more force on impact. You’ll protect the head but at the expense of potentially more injuries created by contact with a helmet. And the safety increase that comes with more padding would be limited.

It’s sad, but concussions will always be a part of this sport. If they want to prevent the amount of blind-side hits, make the dimensions of the field larger. The current dimensions were made when a lineman was 200 pounds, the players have grown but not the field they play on.

          • avatar juunit says:

No it doesn’t. The players control the force of the impact, not the helmet. A bigger helmet only creates a bigger target, but if the bigger target is also safer then it doesn’t matter that it’s bigger. It might lead to more helmet to helmet collisions, but it would make those collisions less dangerous. Obviously concussions are going to be a part of the game, which is why the NFL needs to accept that and either make a change safety wise or just back off and let them play the game.

            • avatar Brendan says:

I don’t agree with that at all. Bigger target would lead to more helmet-caused injuries. Players are always going to use it when they make contact, a bigger helmet just has more chance to do damage.

            • avatar Stewballz says:

Force = Mass(bigger helmet) X Acceleration(faster players)that will result in some crushing hits.

              • avatar juunit says:

The players aren’t running any faster, and the helmets are bigger because they have more padding. The padding reduces the impact, the more padding, the less impact. Go slam your head against a pillow, then put another pillow on top and do it again… see how it goes.

  12. avatar Merc20 says:

Keep in mind these aren’t Nike’s designs…. they are fan concepts of what they think Nike ‘may’ do. These have nothing to do with Nike though.

    • avatar Merc20 says:

And yes the old Jets logo needs to go away forever. And the black accents work but not a whole black uni top.

      • avatar simplysimon2 says:

I never liked those balloon style helmets that O’Brien and Norman (Boomer) wore but the logos of that time work for me on our current Namath SB helmets. Something old, something new, works for me.

On the other hand, the black doesn’t work for me on the uniforms. I’d rather see them go more white and less green on home unis although that may be confusing to the players in the heat of competition if both players are in white-ish.

    • When you’re dealing with corporate America, when items are produced, it’s too late. The time to slap them down painfully is in the design and planning stage, not when they’ve invested real cash in their hideous insane idea, that now everybody hates. They’ll just spend more millions convincing you that you REALLY DO love ugly things. Especially theirs.

We need to scream loudly to Nike. NOW.

You may be just floating these ideas. But trash them — NOW!

  13. avatar Ed L says:

    looks like arena football…

your pathetic nike…if it isnt broke dont fix it…

i like the nfl the way it is now.

  14. avatar Zartan says:

ESPN jar reported, Josh Cribbs dislocated 4 toes against the Jets. Don’t mess with this D, you’ll get your toes broken. Lol.

    • avatar Zartan says:

Lmao, seriously :’ D how do you dislocate not 1 but 4 toes.

      • avatar Stewballz says:

I did it wrestling in high school. I sprawled out in defence and my shoe just kinda stuck to the mat, then the opponent and my own weight drove back and down, the toes stayed curled under my foot. That was more painful than tearing my ACL and both shoulders injuries.

Its a very freak accident and one that nags you because the doctors cant mobilize it or stop you from using it. It just sucks.

  15. Well I do like how they incorporated the black into uniform and mostly the helmet. If you look close enough they have three different Jet Logos identified on the entire getup. If anything I would say stick with the current green and white uniform but incorporate some black some place (say the belt). Then what I would do is use this new image of the helmet “BUT” on the right side of the helmet use the current NYJ Logo and keep the 80’ logo on the Left side of the Helmet.

  16. avatar BKWRXWgn says:

I’m fine with the current uni’s but if there is to be consideration for a tweek I’d say go with solid green socks. If they wanted to do a drastic change I’d say go with a all green jersey and black pants. Bottom line the opposing team should always see green whether it’s their QB after a pile on or a JETS WR toasting their secondary…..

  17. avatar mrose says:

Hah, anyone notice the Vik’s uni is Moss? LOL

  18. avatar Ferraro41 says:

I guess I’m just a traditionalist. I was thrilled when Parcells took over and changed the Jets uni’s back to old school look. I love their current uniforms. When I see that 80′s/90′s Jets logo, I see Joe Walton. And Rich Kotite. And Bubby Brister. And Blair Thomas. And Johnny Mitchell. And……

  19. Our worst logo

Black is not one of our colors and gimmick black unis are always terrible

The current Jets uni (and Titans alternate) is one of the best in football

This one looks like a mediocre arena football team

If Nike does something like this I won’t be buying any more jerseys. Leave well enough alone. For the love of God.

  20. avatar DA says:

Love the 80′s logo. Sack exchange. Would love a throwback.

  21. avatar DA says:

Also its better than the titans / chargers uni.

    • These ugly unis have only 1, ONE, thing going for them…

They’re still better than the CURRENT TENNESSEE TITAN UNIS.

Them’s some UGGGGGGGLLLLLLYYYYYY unis. Perhaps the ugliest in all of sport.

The Houston Oiler unis were much better looking — they could have simply transitioned them to Nashville.

  22. avatar bonebreaker says:

I do not like all that black.

  23. avatar karl hungus says:

    Comic Book Guy says…..worst…..design…..ever…..

Our unis are perfect as is….leave them alone.
And any suggestion for the Chargers that does not have them immediately return to the powder blues with the old school helmets with the numbers on the side should be shot down without discussion. Hands down the greatest unis in sports…why they dont bring them back full time is beyond me.

  24. Aw, she stinks………burn it……send it back to hell.

  25. avatar Shawn says:

Looks too much like the Oregon Ducks.

I like the 80s uniform but the 90s like most Jet fans just gives us a negative feeling..

  26. avatar Dylan says:

I really don’t like the uniforms, except as throwbacks. It makes us look like an XFL team. The Jets uniform is classic. I love the green and white. Its easily a top 5 uniform in the NFL. At least our Nike uniform is one of the better ones though. The Vikings, Patriots, and Jaguars new designs (if they stick) are so hideous!

  27. avatar Bravo says:

I agree with all of you…. I bleed Green and white ! not black wtf? but i would like to see the old logo back … the Sack Exchange years…Cherbet and Keyshawn….

  28. avatar NJets says:

Its not like these are approved or anything. NFL purists would never accept the drastic changes. I do like Nike’s jerseys and helmets though. I think it would look sweet if our helmet logos grew in size (took up more helmet space). Id love to see our normal jerseys in the nike design (the green and white stripes). The black doesn’t bother me, I just think we we should stick to white helmets.

  29. avatar PIN says:

Thank God these designs are not the real Uniforms

    • avatar bono-zoffa says:

Wow. PFT actually came out w/ a good/relevant/accurate story? Oh wait, it wasn’t Florio. I’m sure if it was his story, he would eff it up somehow.

    • We knew this already. The link says they are just one artist’s guess of what Nike will do:

“many have wondered just what Nike might try and do, an intrepid designer took to the idea of creating his own Nike Proto “Pro Combat” unis”

      • avatar Bent says:

Yep, I think the PFT story is wrong. They aren’t “fake” it’s just that some people misinterpreted them and portrayed the images inaccurately.

They were on lulzimg.com for goodness sake! Is that the outlet Nike would use to leak designs?

  30. avatar GangreenTed says:

absolutelty love it!!! The old jets logo is awesome regardless of the heartache we suffered with them…Ive always hated the current logos..and the black is also awesome..its about damn time, our unis need a change.theyre way too stale! Go nike!!

  31. avatar wyojim says:

HID-E-OUS! Spare us, please. Green and white forever.

  32. avatar ajpiano says:

green and white’s gotta stay forever – that black is terrible, but i am REALLY partial to the 80s/90s logo. even though it was a dark time in jets land, it’s when i grew up, so i have fostered a relatively strong attachment to it.

when we switched back to the 60s logo with parcells, at the time i was psyched because it was cool and throwback, but after another 12 years, i think the current logo is feeling rather dated. it’s also much busier than your average NFL team’s logo, which is probably why you see the jets pushing that new NY (italic) logo all over the place, along with the 1962 “Jet Plane” logo, which has gotten a renaissance of sorts the last few years after being a complete throwaway for 1 season!

  33. they are fake and photo shopped… some of them are ridiculously stupid.

  34. avatar Team JCo says:

Those Nike Pro Combat uni’s in college are god awful.

  35. avatar bono-zoffa says:

Thankfully they are fake. Because they are HORRIBLE! What the eff is this, “Any Given Sunday”?

No way to the black and definitely, absolutely no way to the mid-80′s Jets logo. Our luck started to change once we got rid of that….somewhat.

    • Not somewhat…almost totally. I can’t think of a single infamous play that has happened against this team in the new/old Uni’s since the switch.

Before? Shovel Pass, Clock Play…etc. There are many more.

      No 70′s symbol ever again!

  36. avatar Brad says:

It would be interesting to put it to a vote on whether the fanbase would like return to the old 80s jets logo. I think it would be pretty 50/50.

I like that logo a lot, I just don’t like the black at all. We’re green and white, plain and simple.

  37. avatar Broski says:

Hey does anyone remember they entertained this idea back in the 90′s when terrance mathis was still a jet? They had it on Jets Journal they had Black helmets with the old 80′s logo and black jerseys with green numbers and green pants I thought they looked pretty bada** then again I was in my early teens back then.

  38. avatar average joe says:

hate it… hated the sack exchange uni’s ..and hated the blair thomas era uni’s too…. love the original style..

  39. avatar karl hungus says:

the only thing worse than that is our green pants look….god I hate the green pants.

  40. avatar Rafael says:

man… i like the old logo but…the actual logo is much better!

and we must be green and white, can’t be black at all

  41. They are fun re-imaginings, but in no way do I want to see those unis, or that old Jets symbol rear it’s ugly head again.

There is too much losing associated with those for me. The switch back to the current uni’s (though slightly different than the originals) was the best thing the franchise could have done.

We now have one of the best, classiest looking Uni’s in the NFL. No need to change.

  42. you add a cape and a bowtie that spins to these new jerseys and i think nike got something here

  43. avatar Wormfather says:

My wife and I happen to like this concept.

  44. avatar Broadway12 says:

I like the design but instead of the the black replace it with white and the unis would look good

  45. avatar Randy says:

I have a better idea..why don’t we just use the Jets 80′s Jerseys as alternate throwbacks once a while? It would make things interesting and would be something different for a change.I am fine with our current jerseys, but a few games a year would be nice to have a throwback that isn’t the New York Titans jerseys.Patriots wear their throwbacks once a while and so does every other NFL team.Bring back the Jets Green 80′s jerseys and helmet for a few games.

    • Why not? Because the stench of losing will never be washed out of that Uni. Want throwbacks? Lighten up the green, muddle up the current logo a little bit and you have the original Jow-Willy era throwback.

Heck, use the throw away “airplane” logo.

      No to the 70′s.

  46. avatar johnnyreefer says:

i think most are pretty dope looking.

just because its flashy don’t make it bad.

  47. i don get why people are hating these jerseys these jerseys are sick looking!!!!!!

  48. the cardinals jerseys are by far the sickest ones out of all of them than the panthers
