Here’s a chance for us (and you) to give out some game balls.
KR Brad Smith – Proving his worth yet again in those hard to quantify areas of the game, Brad Smith’s opening kickoff 97 yard touchdown allowed for the Jets to play with a lead for a quarter and a half, and helped spark the offense by getting them good field position during the course of the game.
DB Drew Coleman – The backup defensive back had a big day against the Steelers racking up the most tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles.
WR Braylon Edwards – The tall receiver accounted for 100 of Mark Sanchez’s 170 passing yards, including a textbook sideline catch for 38 yards and a gutty over the middle catch while he received a hit to the head while defenseless. Edwards has been a forgotten player of late, but he showed how valuable he can be to this team.
LB Jason Taylor – Taylor had two tackles for loss, but it was the one that we’ll remember. Taylor’s effortless safety in the late minutes of the fourth quarter was an impressive play to help deter the Steelers from driving the field, and making a field goal meaningless.
CB Darrelle Revis – He played his charges as a receiver well, and while he only had one pass defensed he made some great plays as a de facto safety, coming up with some crucial tackles on runners in space who might have made it for first downs or worse.
ST Josh Mauga – The backup linebacker has earned his spot on the active roster and accounted for another two special teams tackles yesterday. I think Mauga could be a core special teamer for the Jets in years to come.

I concur, the coaching staff made the necessary changes.
-
While I realize we won (the first game I was able to watch throughout with giving up and checking the score), we only scored one TD and thirteen points on offense.
Not exactly a juggernaut and not nearly as many as many as the team that lost.
While not disastrously broken; our offense is not yet fixed.
I am amazed at how many “experts” and fans are willing to forget that our offense did not score as many points as our defense gave up.
harlan
-
Well, the game isn’t decided by offense scoring more than your defense lets up, so I guess the Jets still won.
And it’s the Steelers. I could understand if they had yesterday’s game against the Bills. But the Steelers are the best defense in the league this season. The Jets scored 2 less than the Steelers give up on average. They held Atlanta to less than 10 points in Atlanta. They held the Ravens to 10 points in Baltimore.
For the Jets offense to score 13 and consistently control the football is a considerable success.
(And, yes, I realize that those other games had Troy Polomalu playing, but the Jets simply beat who was in front of them).
-
what i tell you some people are just ungrateful we beat the steelers in the snow in pittsburgh and they expect Sanchez to lite them up .we beat them whole team effort .
-
With a second year qb in those conditions after two ugly losses. They get my hat tip.
-

-
You sound like a real devoted fan. Why don’t you watch the games before you start commenting on how bad the Jets are even when they win.
-
Harlan is definitely a real, devoted fan (and I didn’t mean it sarcastically). And he obviously watched the game because he brought up a point no one else did.
I happen to disagree with it, but Harlan is the real deal when it comes to being a Jets fan.
-
Fine I’m just so sick of pessimistic jets fans. Everyone complains even when we win.1 more W and were in the playoffs. Making it 2 years in a row is a hard thing to do in the NFL. Everyone expects us to win the superbowl this year but let’s be happy that we have a good team that can win tough road games like this.
-
Trust me, I feel the same way about the pessimism, but Harlan isn’t that type of fan.
-
Fans like us need to keep up the optimism. I’ve been an active fan since the Rich Kotite years. We’ve come a long way since then. I really don’t believe in the SOJ we’ve made the playoffs a bunch of times in the last 15 years and while we haven’t made the big game we’ve come close two and a half times. Let’s be happy that we’re not Browns fans!

Game circumstances determine a style of play. Just because we got 7 points on Special Teams and not on Offense doesn’t mean Pittsburgh “out-played” us or played “better” or “deserved to win” or any of that crap.
What it comes down to is that the Jets were down 7 in the 3rd quarter. They had the drive and the talent to even it out and then take and hold the lead.
A great great win for this team against a tough tough oppoenent in a very tough stadium.
-
Unsung hero of the game: Steve Weatherford. Came up big in the clutch this time
-
-
I agree with you! And to the person who said, its the steelers not buffalo, what do you call the Miami game?
-
Steelers = #1 defense in the NFL
Buffalo = #25 defense in NFL
Miami = #7 defense in NFL
What do I call the Miami game? Tough home loss against a tough and physical team with a great defense?
-
miami always plays us tough as is a divisional game, always hard fought
-
-
-
-
-
Schotty
The OL: no sacks allowed
-
-
Add Nick Folk to this list. Two vital field goals in a tough environment. I had lost all confidence in him, this was big for Folk.
-
Yeah, coz you know, not many people could’ve made the 25 yarder. Folk’s the best kicker ever.
-
He was solid, and very good on kickoffs. That’s what you want from your kicker (Rex also didn’t put him in ridiculous spots like attempting 52 yarders in that wind or anything).
-
They had to punt a couple of times because Rex didn’t trust Folk kicking a 40 yarder. Is he the worst kicker ever? Probably not, but he certainly isn’t a good one either.
-
No, they passed on 45+ yarders with double-digit MPH winds and snow. That is a game of field position. If the Jets were playing a worse defense Rex would have certainly let Folk kick a 40-45 yarder, but against Pittsburgh, where your chances for a FG are few and far between, you play for field position.
-
They weren’t 40 yarders they were for the most part at the 30 or longer making them 48 yards which is too long for most kickers in the snow at Heinz field.
-
I’m not a huge Folk supporter, but please check your facts(or watch the game) before posting
-
You got me; I never watched the game. You know what? Lock him up for life, I don’t care.
-
-
-
-
-
-
Weatherford, great performance, again.
Has morphed into a terrific positional punter.
-
And what about Folk? Two FG’s in that environment and kickoffs with great hangtime all day. He’s hopefully righted his ship for the long haul.
-
Yep. And you might recall, this is on the field that Westhoff called “the worst in the NFL”.
-
-
+1
He punted the Jets into strong field position all day.
-
+2
-
Yup. And give Money McKnight some love. He’s played the gunner spot well.
-
Downing the ball at the goaline was a big play.
-
Yeah I’m starting to like this kid. Hopefully next season he can actually return punts and play more for the offense. I think he can and will eventually be a big impact player for this team.
-
-
Although Weatherford was great kicking from midfield, it seems as though everyone is forgetting about the horrid 36-yard punt he let loose after the Jets first offensive drive from deep in their own territory. It gave the Steelers the ball on their own 46 — if the defense hadn’t made such a great stand there, it could’ve been a disaster.
He has been great from midfield, but there’s been a couple of times from deep in their own territory when he has struggled.
-
agree here – think weatherford is a glaring omission in game balls. He played a great game
-
Totally agree. He might have single handedly won the game for us. Those two punts downed within the ten one leading to the safety clinched this one. Bet Giants fans wished they had a punter half as good as Weatherford!
-
-
How about the offensive line? They did a great job against one of the best defenses in the league.
-
yea…harrison and woodley were a non-factor..
harrison did have like 10 tackles but the protection was great
and correct me if i am wrong but i dont think sanchez was sacked once
-
The counted one of his scrambles as a sack, the one where he was tackled at the LOS (another bad spot resulting in a misleading stat)
-
ohh…well speaking of bad spots what the heck was going on when they gave the steelers a first down when he was clearly short by a full yard and a half…
the spotting of the ball yesterday was really bad…
-
Don’t forget the spike in the 4th. They tried to not count it.
Also, the Jets continue to get held with no calls! Our pass rush is bad but not that bad. -
this was actually good for us… 2nd and 1 is almost a sure conversion… 1st and 10 worked out better
-
-
-
There was 1 sack, but for a loss of 0 yards. I’d have to agree the o-line did a great job of pass protection against the best pass rushing combo in the NFL
-
-
-
how is sanchez not in here??
-
Could we actually hand a game ball to Taylor for the safety?
The concept alone is crazy…us Jet fans cheering Taylor. He definitely earned his stripes on that play though.
And dispite a couple of poor performances, I think Folk has been pretty solid this year.
-
First let me say that the safty was an awsome play by Taylor…..but,
but i actually don’t think the safty was important. If they had stoped him at the one half yard line (as opposed to the safty),l the Jets woudl have gotten far better field position after a punt then they got after the free kick. So, it’s just as likely that the Jets would have converted a FG, and there would been much LESS time on the clock for Pittsburger.
The individual play was terrific, but i do not think it had a great impact on the game.
Thoughts?
-
Who knows if we would have stopped them there, I mean it would have been 2nd down and we did have problems stopping them the whole game.
-
You’re assuming the Steelers would have had to punt. They were just as likely to get a first down.
-
True, but if they forced the punt it’s not likely that Pittsburgh would have had time for that last drive. I’m just saying that, even without the safty, I think the Jets would have won at that point.
-
How do you figure? The Jets got the ball back on the free kick after the safety. That took even more time off the clock. Without the safety and following free kick the Steelers would’ve had over 4 minutes to march down the field which they had already done twice before from within their own 5.
-
What are you talking about? If the Jets forced a punt the clock woudl have been way down because Pitt would have run 2 more plays. Additionally we would have had much better field position.
-
The Jets punted and pinned the Steelers on their own 2 yard line with 2:38 left. The odds that the Steelers ran down the clock on themselves? Unlikely. They would’ve ran the ball that play, but then gone back to the pass. No way you run the ball twice in that situation.
And isn’t the fact that the game went from a 3 point game to a 5 point game essentially what won the game for the Jets? If the Steelers only needed a FG they would’ve had that easily. The need for a TD is what kept them driving.
-
-
-
-
-
The safety was HUGE! Without it, all they’d need was a field goal. The Steelers proved yesterday that long drives of over 90 yards were absolutely no problem. Because of the safety they needed a TD, which they were close to getting.
-
I agree completely with junnit. Those 2 extra points made the difference yesterday. Had the Steelers only needed a FG, they probably would have easily converted an attempt from the 8 yard line with 0:09 remaining in the game. Who knows what would have happened in OT. I’m glad we will never know.
-
-
Umm if he didn’t get the safety how do you know that they don’t drive down the field for the tying FG or TD? Why would you assume that they would have to punt they drove from the 8 yard line on there last drive didn’t they?
-
never look a gift horse in the mouth. 2 more kicks at the can by pitt in that situation, who knows what would have happened, seeing they had already driven the field on us before.
-
-
-
seemed to me that ben picked on coleman all day, which is why he had so many tackles.
I remember 2 thrid downs in a row completeed to sanders against coleman.
i swilson still not capable of playing??? look at these other cbs there all starters, and wilson was said to be the best in the draft???
I no longer like drafting from secondary schools.
-
Wilson was playing yesterday, he had good coverage on one critical 3rd down pass late.
-
damn secondary schools like Boise State? one of the highest rated programs?
-
You can’t really blame him to be honest. He’s not Darelle Revis and the receivers had way too much time to create space. If there was any kind of pass rush I bet Coleman would not have given up as many completions.
-
Kyle Wilson also almost had a sack i believe on one play.
-
-
-
coleman is a great blitzer. probably the 2nd best DB blitzer on the team other than Diggs (when he is healthy). wilson is not a good blitzer, i do not understand why we keep putting him in that role. and Cro was terrible on his lone blitz attempt.
that said, coleman is still not a cover guy. we REALLY need wilson to step up his coverage skills. numerous times in the game the steelers would simply go 3 WRs and throw to the guy not covered by revis or Cro (or throw to the TE).
also – this may be a question for BGA, but it seemsd as though Revis stuck to one side of the field (LCB) and Cro was on the opposite side. why do this? it really limits his effectiveness. i noticed one time the steelers split their FB out to the near side and revis went out to cover him. makes no sense
-
Asking Cromartie to blitz is kind of dumb. He’s such a poor tackler he’d probably be afraid to hit the QB even if he was looking the other way… I like Cromartie more than I expected to, but he’s just a horrible tackler and there’s no way around that. I’m not sure he really fits for the long term because of that.
-
His tackling isn’t as bad as people were making it seem before the season. He is decent for a CB, he slows the guy down and allows time for help to arrive.
-
he isnt the worst tackler in the league, but he is a below average tackler for a CB. if there is a stat for miss tackles or yards after attempted contact by a CB, i would like to see those
-
Oh, he’s bad, my point is that most CB’s are bad. For every Revis there’s 5-10 Cromartie’s.
-
Perhaps that’s true but I still always close my eyes when the guy is the only one in the vicinity to make a tackle. If I were an OC for another team I’d figure out who Cromartie was covering and just call outside runs to that side of the field over and over. Luckily nobody has done that yet. But I imagine that may happen in the playoffs.
-
I’m sure that Rex schemes to compensate for Cro’s tackling. You have to.
-

-
How about Wayne Hunter? Nice quiet game.
-
Yes, Wayne had a quiet game — great for him!!
Funny, the one time he got called, he was too far downfield!! He must have vapor-locked and thought for a moment he was still a Tackle-eligible! Those TE lessons die hard… LOL!
-
-
what about Gholston. Great tackle on specials!
-
I remember that play. He didn’t tackle him so much as just stop him, then everyone else came and they blew the play dead.
-
That’s 98% of tackling.
-
-
never got the guy to the ground…but we’ll take it…the best we can hope for from our high 1st round pick
-
-
I thought Weatherford was a key player in this game. Yes, the opening punt was short, but it is tough to punt a rock very far. He has been clutch all season pinning teams at the goal line. His punt led to the safety and then he pinned them again with 2 minutes to play. For how important the punting game is to a team’s fortune, all you have to do is look at the team in Blue.
-
Except the Pats game.
-
-
Did anybody else see Rob Turner try to leg whip a defender in the endzone on the Sanchez bootleg? Fortunately, he whiffed or the TD might have been called back. What was he thinking?
-
haha i noticed that and almost had a heart attack.
-
i know me too…i couldnt believe he dove like that…he should have just stood there and done nothing lol
-
Personally, I hate watching Turner play. He is a stupid penalty waiting to happen.
-
-

-
Some unsung heroes for game balls:
1) Marquice Cole: I had to look up his story because I didn’t know a whole lot about him but he broke up both passes in the endzone on the final drive
2) Wayne Hunter: Woodley & Harrison were essentially silent.
-
I believe if you check you will also have to credit him for the other downed punt inside the five.
harlan
-
I think the other downed punt was mcknight
-
-
MARQUICE COLE is my Player of the Game!
Coleman, Hunter and Taylor are close 2A,B,Cs. All were great.
But for all of the other stunning plays made all day long, it came down to a shootout.
10 very long seconds of Ben at the 10 yd. line w/2 plays to work with and moving targets of his choice flying around the end zone.
COLE broke up both passes to the TE Spaeth (sp?), either of which would have won the game outright.
In fact, on the second play, as the TE flew across the endline towards Ben, Cole was right inside his shirt the whole way. The last desperate leap to tip it away saved what appears to be a certain corner catch to win it for Pitt.
The coverage is soooo good on that play, that through replay after replay, I thought it was Revis who made the play. That’s because from the main camera angle, you could only see the “4″ on the back of the jersey, so I assumed it was “24.” Au contraire…, finally I saw a different angle. As he rolled on the ground after falling, I could see Cole’s “34″ on the shirt.
Game Ball to Mr. Cole!! The Jets are well manned at Goalie!!
-
+1 thought it was revis also, at first glance. excellent coverage in a big spot, hopefully it earns him some more reps.
-
I’ve been calling for more reps for Cole. He’s one of those players who is always around the ball.
-
-
-
-
Sanchez. He looked like a different QB yesterday. Poised and on target. I still don’t like that he had, at least, 2 balls batted down yesterday. But, that’s a nit. He played maybe his best game as a Jet and, importantly, with his job and the Jets’ season on the line, he delivered. If Sanchez gets hot from here on out, this Jets team will have some legs in the playoffs. He rose to the occasion and that’s what franchise QBs do.
-
I think Bent said he leads the league in batted balls? Drew Brees tape, maybe?
-
i have a hard time believing that. every team has batted balls, it is part of the game.
we are only 15th in the league in passing attempts. for us to be 1st in the league in batted balls would be a major statistical abberation.
-
No, he’s the league leader. Bent posted yesterday that entering the week, Sanchez was 2nd behind McNabb, who didn’t play. It’s a definite issue for Sanchez’s game.
-
The good thing is it’s probably fixable—I just hope Schotty’s team is focusing on this.
-
That, of course, would be Matty C.’s job. Or lack of same.
-
Eh, I’m sure it will improve with time, but his height is something of a limiting factor unless he starts getting out of the pocket much more.
-
-
Not for nothing but Blady had two batted balls in last night’s game…
-
Brady…How did that happen?!? L and R are so far apart….
-
You subconscious took over and forced you to type the L, probably because Brady’s hair makes him look more like his wife than a football player.
-
Have an in-law in Mass., who claims to have a friend who knows the one who worked on Brady’s hair plugs. Said she, “remember when he wore hats ALL the time a while back??” Made me laugh, seeing golden boy in my mind, with little rows of plugs standing vigil across the top of that celebrity face, like an old picket fence.

Great game. It certainly exceeded my expectations. I felt as though we had a chance if our offense came out with energy and focus, but we all know that wasn’t a sure thing.
Thank god Brad Smith returns that kick to open the game, it definitely gave the team an extra shot in the arm.
On a separate note, how big does everyone expect the fine to be for the hits on Braylon. The one that drew the flag should definitely be a hefty fine, but the hit by Harrison on BE that wasn’t flagged was also a questionable hit.
-
Weatherford. He leads the league with 17 punts inside the 10, and he has 35 punts inside the 20 (2nd in the league, 1 behind leader).
Despite that, he only has 4 touchbacks on the year.
He doesn’t punt the ball long, which is a problem, but he’s a great punter from midfield, which is key for field position. 3 Punts inside the 10 and no touchbacks, that’s a great day for a punter.
-
Nice stats, Weatherford has been great
-
Shakeweights baby!
-
-
-
Marquice Cole, downed a punt on the one and had GREAT coverage on Ben’s last throw
-
He really is turning into a very good multi-use player. Cole was one of the guys I took note of and mentioned a lot in preseason, due to his incredible speed. Seems he’s starting to take shape.
-
Is he not gunner anymore on ST since McKnizzle is playing that spot?
-
They’re both playing gunner now, I believe. I think they each downed a ball inside the 5 yesterday.
-
Conjecture, but I think McKnight is picking up a couple of Cole’s ST duties as Cole has to concentrate more on DB duties.
Unfortunate for the overall plan that this is even necessary, but, happily, it’s giving a great opportunity to both of these young men and they seem to be shining in each of their new roles.
-
-
-
-
how about wayne hunter…for his first start which just happened to be against the steelers, he played pretty well.
drew coleman played outstanding
brad smith…that’s all i can say
rex finally just acted and reacted rather than do to much overthinking and just coached
i still think schotty has to go…some of his play calling again was just ridiculous but now is not the time to dwindle on the negative, the jets won and that’s the most important part.
oh steve weatherford was pinning them inside the 5 on every punt. he forced the steelers to go the distance on the last drive but alas the they couldn’t get those last 9 or so yards.
great win but we have to keep up with the ravens n get that 5 seed so we can push off the patriots for on more round n who knows what could happen.
LETS GO GANG GREEN
-
I don’t know about any of you but I gotta say Sanchez was primo on target last night. Except some of the overthrows which in my opinion some were the result of lapses in WR routes. I mean, there were lots of short passes that were really on the money that Phil Sims was praising on a few occasions.
Oh and it was in hostile territory (Pitt) and in the cold weather (and snow). I love coming to this blog and NOT reading those comments that suggest Sanchez is not accurate or can’t play in inclement weather. And I don’t think this game was an aberration, it was a good statement game.
-
Sanchez definitely has the physical ability. And he also has a good head on his shoulders as well. There’s no reason he can’t become a more accurate QB. He’ll never be Peyton, but he can definitely be a top QB. I questioned drafting him at first (only 16 games in college? WTF?), but Sanchez has definitely made me into a believer. There’s a reason he got drafted so high despite only playing those 16 college games.
-
When I saw that draft and we moved up to the number 5 spot I was not on board (though my brother who watches alot of college really was happy)…
-
-
-
what shotty did in his game game plan was to have Sanchez throw to short routes which makes it easier for the QB to throw accurate.
-
EVERYONE VOTE FOR B SMITH TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
To me, Braylon Edwards was the best guy on the field yesterday. He had a huge game. He made tough plays at key moments. You’ve got to give him credit.
-
Absolutely!
In fact, I was going to post on here an All Points Bulletin for Braylon as a Missing Person!
He’s been little more than a decoy for weeks.
Not yesterday! Great game.
-
-
I would probably give game balls to Weatherford (those punts pinning them deep were key) and to Sanchez – simply for having such a bounce back game, mistake free, accurate and decisive if not spectacular.
Coleman did come up huge – and also was chasing guys he was not good enough to cover all day. He is a liability in coverage and we still don’t have a really good answer to what EVERYONE is doing to us week in and week out – attacking anyone in our secondary not named Revis or Cromartie.
Speaking of Revis, he did badly miss one tackle that led to an important first down late in the game, but I guess we can’t expect him to be perfect.
-
according to espn playoff machine even if we lose the final two games and the chiefs, jaguars and colts win thier final two we are in the playoffs with 6th seed so i guess we clinched already. although i did have baltimore winning thier last two so mabey that played into it as well.
-
ok its a little complicated when 3 or more teams are tied…….let’s just keep winning
-
I would vote for Braylon or Sanchez but I’m going to have to give it to Braylon. Sanchez had a very nice game but his qb rating was just over 80. If Bray Bray doesnt make that ridiculous 38 yard over the shoulder catch Sanchez’ qb rating is a pedestrian 71 (still a nice throw but a better catch). And he took a couple other vicious hits and bounced up and told the Steelers DBs ‘you can’t stop me’. I think we lose without those couple of plays.
Honorable mention to: JT, Weatherford, the O-line, LT (some tough early runs).
-
One of those hits wasn’t from a Steelers’ DB, it was from Steelers DPOY James Harrison a.k.a. the Headhunter. If that doesn’t show you how much of a beast Braylon truly is, nothing will.
-
-
Lack of pass rush…..lack of pass rush…..Do we really stand a chance at Indy or at Pats with a lack of pass rush?
-
Jets have a chance to beat anybody. Indy is a bad team.
-
Indy is getting healthier, especially on defense. And they are playing much better unlike your Bama Crimson Tide who you said were better than the 08 Gators. And just to bring this up again….yeah Gators had many flops that went pro. But look at that 08 Nat’l Championship team. Pouncey (rookie Center for Pitt), Percy Harvin (09 ROY), Aaron Hernandez (Pats ROOKIE TE), Louis Murphy (Contributing WR Raiders), Riley Cooper (Eagles Rookie #3 WR, catch a TD and onside kick yesterday), Dave Nelson (Bills Rookie #3 WR), Jermaine Cunningham (Pats ROOKIE OLB) Spikes (Pats MLB), Dunlap (Bengals promising starting Rookie DE), Joe Haden (Browns Rookie starting CB). And probably the only guaranteed bust out of college from that team was one of the best made for college QB’s ever to play. Mr. Tebow who had a college like TD run yesterday.
-
Please never refer to them as “your Bama Crimson Tide”. I said it at the time: I don’t care, at all, about college football. I just dislike Florida.
-
-
Indy is by no stretch a bad team. They have dealt with injuries all season and are now getting healthy. They can be beat, but I really do not want to face them in the playoffs. If we play either Jacksonville or Kansas City, we should win any of those games.I’ll be rooting for the Jaguars and Chiefs.Yet again, you never know how the playoffs will position.Best case scenario for the Jets would be this..
Wildcard-Jets Defeat Chiefs
Wildcard-Ravens Defeat Indy/Jaguars
Divisional-Ravens Defeat Patriots
Divisional-Jets defeat Steelers
AFC Championship-Jets defeat the Ravens at the Meadowlands via 5th seed against 6th.Superbowl-Jets face Giants
-
Despite what yesterday’s box score says, the Colts can’t run. They can’t stop the run. They can’t stop the pass. They’re average at special teams.
Wayne, Garcon, Tamme and Collie are good, but with the line they have Peyton will end up getting killed.
I picked them to win the division, I never wavered on it, but they’re not good or even close to elite.
-
Ummm, you assume the Jets win out and Balt. loses somewhere in the last two weeks. A lot of ‘sumin’.
If they tie (likely), then Balt is home team. Remember September?
-
-
-
-
Weatherford. He leads the league with 17 punts inside the 10, and he has 35 punts inside the 20 (2nd in the league, 1 behind leader).—————- You can thank Schotty and the O for that. That stat is as important than a relief pitchers W-L record in baseball.
-
This game just perpetuates the belief that Drew Coleman has value playing on defense. IT’S NOT TRUE, PEOPLE!
-
Yeah, those two strip-sacks were completely valueless. The Jets certainly didn’t need those in order to win.
-
Two strip sacks mean nothing when you’re getting burned for big plays because of your terrible coverage skills.
-
Two strip means…two strip sacks. Strip sacks as a DB are “impact plays”. You can’t minimize the value of those plays and then say Coleman got burned all day. Without those plays the Jets probably don’t win.
-
It’s not too much of a impact especially if you don’t recover those strip sacks, it has the same impact as a regular sack… On that note I hate watching Coleman get picked on every 3rd down, we need either him or wilson to improve… Damn I wish we had McCourty right now
-
“Not too much impact”.
Ok. Well. The first came in the 4th quarter and ended a drive. So, I don’t know how you can say that his strip sack (that took a play on 2nd and 8 and put the Steelers in 3rd and 19) wasn’t an important play.
And his 2nd strip sack, while not recovered by the Jets, allowed the clock to run and took almost 10 full seconds off the clock in a 2-minute drill with the game on the line. Don’t sack Big Ben there and guess what? The “last play of the game” wouldn’t have been the last play of the game, they would have had time after that for another play, possible two.
NO IMPACT!
-
I didn’t say it didn’t have an impact at all, just stating that if they had been recovered then it would have a huge impact like you are saying, because then WE would have had the last play of the game and not worrying about big Ben having the last play of the game… Just saying
-
Yeah, and if Holmes catches a pass last week and against the Packers, the Jets are 12-2 instead of 10-4. What’s your point?
-
This thread isn’t about last week or against the packers is it …
But to answer your question my point is that Coleman didn’t really help that MUCH with those strip sacks because they were not recovered, if we did recover we most likely would have won easily, which wasn’t the point… The sacks did help stop them, but not recovering those strip sacks almost cost us the gAme which would have meant those strip sacks didn’t contribute to a W if that did happen… Oh and if Holmes catches those balls you are talking about then that wins us the game like, Coleman didnt win us this game…
-
My point is that without those two strip sacks, the Jets lose. Simple as that.
-
That is not true brendan…
How can you say that, you don’t know how things could have played out, what if instead of getting a strip sack we get an INT, do we still lose?
But basically you are saying Coleman won us the game, am
I right? -
You’re diminishing the impact Coleman’s two strip-sacks had on the game.
The flip side of the “what if?” coin says that those two plays could have also been TD’s.
But to say his sacks didn’t help that much is ridiculous.
-
Ok, you have a good point as so do I, but if you want to put it that way, to say if Coleman didn’t make those strip sacks then we lose is ridiculous also… as much as they had the chance to score on those plays the defense also has a good chance to get an INT or fumble…
My point is Coleman didn’t win us this game, special teams did and the fact that schotty called a good game that Sanchez could execute helped also

My Lucky Spreadsheet strikes again lol
I told all of you that last season I made a spreadsheet right before our game against the Panthers and we ended up going on a big run.I did it right after the Miami loss and we end up winning, as well as Miami losing to Buffalo. No I eliminated the Dolphins and Raiders since I started it and we are now just 1 win away from not worrying about
San Diego/Kansas City, or Jacksonville/Indianapolis.-
I guess you should get a game ball as well.
-
Haha..Seriously though Game ball def goes to Shotty!
-
-
You’ve gained the thanks of a grateful Jets Nation.
-
-
The biggest thing the Jets got from this game is that they beat a good team. Now, nobody can say the Jets are the worse 9 win team because they only beat bad teams. As far as the schedule goes..you can’t look at teams you beat at the end, but rather the time when you beat them.Minnesota was very much alive when we beat them.Miami was 2-0 before we played them.Cleveland as coming off a big win against the Patriots. We beat the Patriots, and they were still a very good team at the time. And I don’t care what anybody says, any win “in Denver” is hard to come by with the loud environment they have over there.Jets are a good team and this game proved it.
If any team is overrated, it’s the Steelers. The only good teams they beat were Atlanta,Baltimore and Tampa if you think they are a good team. They lost the first meeting with the Ravens, and they lost to the Steelers,Jets and Patriots.Look at some of the teams the Steelers have beaten.
Titans,Browns,Miami(Should have lost),Bengals twice,Raiders,Bills
That is 7 wins against Sub Par teams and they face Carolina and Cleveland to end the season so they will finish 12-4 with 9 of those 12 against average and bad teams.
-
I agree and if we go into Chi town and get another W to clinch the playoffs no one can say we have not beaten good teams. Probably will have beaten as many good teams as anyone else in the league.
We’re a good team and when and if we make the playoffs and get lucky in terms of match ups and get a few breaks on the field I can’t see why we can’t get to Dallas.
Green bay almost beat the Pats without Rogers and in NE. I don’t want to see them again but we may not have to, a team like the Ravens or Steelers may match up better against them and knock them out like they’ve done in the past.

-
Marquice Cole had a hand in each of the final two attempts by Ben, preventing a touchdown. Plus he had a few good hits and downed that punt before the safety.
-
Yeah him and Coleman aren’t great corners but they certainly made some huge plays sunday. They are what they are, decent backups but not starters.
-
-
Ray Lucas said it best in the post-game show on SNY…Braylon Edwards played like a BEAST!!!!!!!!!!
Man did he show toughness and heart for his boy Sanchez!!!! He held onto everything after taking such big hits!!!!! I loved it when Harrison lit him up, yet he held onto it and started talking smack back to him and Harrison looked puzzled.
Coleman showed how to breakdown under control when making a sack!!!! He made up for some bad play the rest of the year!!!!
Brad Smith!!! Just gotta love this kid!!!!!!!!
-
Weatherford didn’t suck yesterday. 2 drives for Pit began inside the 10. Luckily, the defense stopped 1 of them.
In bad weather games, field position is key.
4 punts, 3 inside the 20 & no touchbacks is solid.
-
Defense stopped both drives dude.
-
-
I would give a gameball to bray bray like some of you guys have said… I’ve noticed when he is involved in the gameplan heavy, the whole offense looks better especially Sanchez… He is such a big target and he was running those intermediate routes very good and catching most of them! He is focussed when he is getting targeted alot, and is simply a beast and hard to stop… We just need him to be more consistent, remember how consistent he was and how many points we were putting up b4 Holmes came back, Braylon was beasting! And involve him in the gameplan more from here on schotty!
-
Can someone explain to me how the Steelers converted on the 26 when they needed to get to the 25 on that early drive? Simms called that out immediately when Moore was downed short of the marker.
-
Weatherford is very good at putting the ball inside the 10 but he leads the league because SHOTTY SUCKS!!! WHat other team has had as many drives stall right outside field goal position? Our offense sucks in the red zone but we also suck in side the opposing 45. Shotty has a QB that is extremely elusive and thows very well on the run… a team that has had problems on third down…. So why is it that we don’t rollout more on third down – maybe with the specific option of running being the first option once in a while. And why won’t he let Brad Smith throw the ball… is he saving that fro the Superbowl? His play calling was adequate yesterday… but it could have been much better.
-
They rolled out quite a few times last night.
Brad Smith sucks at throwing.
And yesterday they stalled in the redzone because (once again) the players kept messing up. Slauson’s holding call wasn’t Schotty’s fault, but that stalled the team on a drive in the Steelers territory, right?
It’s unreal how much fans of this team whine.
-
Yea that holding call was a killer, we would have scored a TD with 4 downs inside the 5 yard line, at least I believe so
-
-
-
Robert Turner. A KOR for a few yards, logged some time on the OL, made some great blocks, logged time on the DL, and lead Sanchez to a TD run (even though Mark could’ve gotten to the goal line walking and twirling a cane).
WR core- NO DROPPED PASSES
Ben Hartsock- An entire game WITHOUT being flagged.
good work, everyone. ON to Chicago!
-
And WHY exactly did Hartsock let that KO go right through his legs w/o even attempting to catch it, knowing Twinkle Toes Turner is right behind him?
Does it say much for the team’s faith in his TE receiving skills if the game plan is for Turner to be the receiver behind him?
That said, ANY game w/o a Hartsock Holding Call is a GOOD game!
-
If I had to guess, I’d say because it was about to short-hop him. What I was always taught is that you avoid the ball if you think there’s even a chance you won’t field it cleanly. So maybe he was judging the ball coming at him (very quickly, for a squib kick) and realized it was an in-between hop (meaning it would have landed right at his feet and been awkward to field.
-
Obviously, if you’re on the first line of the hands team, that doesn’t apply to you. But it did apply to blockers on the 2nd/3rd lines.
-
That’s what I assumed watching it live, but on replay, it appeared to be a very catchable ball for him.

Just a quick word of praise about the interior DBs & LBs last night.
Everyone on Planet Football knows that this is the soft underbelly of the Jets D. This is where we can be hurt and this is where OCs & QBs aim their weapons. For us, they shelve their main game plans and celebrity studs, and shift game plans to highlight their 3rd & 4th line receivers and backs, knowing we can’t stop a clock over the middle. DR & Cro lock down the sideline routes, so they’re gone.
But the middle has killed us all year. The Groper was no different. So seeing Coleman, Pool, Cole, Lowery and the LBs (aside from Harris’ miserable TE coverage on the Pitt TD), stand and be counted was a great thing of beauty to watch.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, they got burned plenty on 3rd down, but consistently, when it was finally time to make a big play and be counted among the stalwart, they were there.
Congrats to them all!

Schotty for giving help to hunter, Turner played quite a bit as at TE, mostly helping out Hunter.
Nice adjustment, albeit one week too late to help us vs. Miami.
-
Game Ball to the bootleg on the Sanchez TD.. great call, even better execution.
-
Bent, I know you get a lot of requests, but is there a website that tracks passer accuracy by yards downfield? For example, a very surprising statistic during the Penny years was that Chad was actually extremely accurate on throws over 20+ yards, he just didn’t do it a lot. If I look at both Peyton and Brady, they take advantage of YAC as much as any 2 quarterbacks in the league, while Brees and Rivers tend to throw longer passes. Does Football Outsiders track this? The reason for my question is that I believe that if we could give Sanchez the shorter routes, then some timely go routes once you’ve pulled the safeties down, you create easier chances for him and better efficiency. Any thoughts?
-
i killed schott last week (schitty) but he called a great game. exactly what I wanted to see. more passing on 1st down. beyond that we need to stop having Smith wildcat and not throw the ball. he was a QB and sometimes he should throw it. great play action yesterday. I’d still like to see more Keller but otherwise great job against the toughest D in the NFL. without Troy wasn’t as tough but still rough.
-
coleman is absolutely dreadful in man coverage and this one game doesnt change the fact that i cant stand him. if hes on the field he should blitz every team, no coverage anymore…badbadbadbad
-
That would take away from his effectiveness as a blitzer. With a better pass rush he wouldn’t be as much of a liability because he would have to cover for less time. But if you do nothing but blitz him, teams will always look for the blitz.
-
-
Ding Dong the losings end, the giants lost, I’m going to bed
-
when hes in coverage, hes not even remotely close to the guy hes covering. hes always turned the other way. and so is cromartie. we have 1 real defensive player and thats revis, everyone else can go. harris and scott only good against the run and horrible in coverage too. this D pisses me off, so inconsistant. and brendan i specifically said “man coverage” and ment to put “man coverage” at the end too. put him in a zone thats fine, but mans a nono.
-
“It’s Alive” (from Frankenstein the movie). “The report of my death has been grossly exaggerated”. I almost fell of my chair when Schotty called a boot leg. Maybe the fans and the media calling for his head prompted a “fluss of creativity in the offensive play calling”. I hope so…
-
i was on the game thread and once again just reading reality jets fan’s comments and i swear he is the most irritating and the biggest jet hater of all time… Bassett please if there is a way to band this guy from posting on this website you will be doing everyone a favor because he doesnt even have a clue what he is talking about when he tries to trash his “favorite team”
-
and what do you know reality jets fan has nothing to say on this thread because he has nothing to say now that the jets won… thank god no one should have to hear his stupidity

I’m giving one to Schotty and the coaches as well..
Come on boys.. Let me have it!
