Jets are going to bring it! So glad we got to rest a few people. They’ll be raring to go!

all i want is a twitter update

  3. avatar Ferraro41 says:

Well, if we do in fact make it to Dallas as Rex has predicted, it won’t be without earning it. Manning, Brady and then (in all likelihood) Roethlisberger, all on the road. That’s hard core.

  4. That is the road to Mordor! I think we matchup well against Indy now that we have 2 corners, and they have less weapons (Clark hurt, Collie’s head dizzy). I really hate to beat a dead horse, but we NEED to hit Manning early and often. Force him to make decisions like he did mid-season. We will be rested, and ready for that task. But it needs to come all game long. Strickland and Greene going down last year killed us, followed by Peyton.

  5. avatar Brendan says:

Someone remind Clayton over at ESPN that the Jets are indeed in the playoffs, and have a better record than two of the teams seeded higher than them.

Clayton’s AFC preview, when you sift through the crap, is basically saying “Pats are winning, unless they play Balt or Indy, who have a limited chance at beating them, other teams need not even show up”.

You’d think the Jets didn’t finish with the 4th best record in the NFL.

    • avatar Ferraro41 says:

Jason LaConfora of NFL Network is pretty much the same. He tweeted this morning that he “could definitely see three wildcard teams winning next week: Saints, Packers and Ravens”. He thinks the Jets have no chance against Indy.

      • avatar Brendan says:

I know what they’ll say, too. That they stopped, Chris Johnson, MJD, McFadden, and Chris Johnson again.

Pardon me while I scoff at that list.

They stopped MJD with a torn meniscus (sat out two weeks after they played), McFadden with a turf toe injury (sat out week after Colts game) and CJ on a team that cared about winning as much as I care about Tennessee winning.

Great. Now stop a real rushing attack.

        • avatar Nick says:

The problem is that Manning torches every Rex defence he faces. Why does anyone think this one will be different? Sure Indy is missing weapons, but this is the weakest Rex Ryan D in a number of years as well.

I’ll hope for the best, but I do not expect to win this game.

          • avatar Private Jet says:

            One word: Pressure

If they bring it, they’ll win. If they don’t, there’s always next year.

            • avatar BamBam says:

Our pressure is of the manufactured and fool the QB variety because we can’t rely on the front four to bring it. Peyton is better than any super computer when it comes to recognizing pressure, coverages and mismatches. This is why he tends to beat Rex’s system with regularity.
We gotta hope that one of his inexperienced WR’s crumbles under the pressure or that we get some tipped ball interceptions. On the offensive side we need TD’s and not FG’s.

          • avatar Ferraro41 says:

Because I think that the matchup of their defense against our offense is far worse (for them) than the matchup is of our defense against their offense (for us).

Do I expect the Jets defense to shut Manning down? Well, of course not. But I expect us to hold them to more field goals than not. On the other hand, I think they are going to have a very difficult time handling our offense.

      • avatar Bent says:

If it’s “three home teams and the (exporting) Jets” then he’ll be 0-4.

I’m not sure that can happen again though. Seattle over New Orleans?

    • avatar Steve says:

Clayton also said that if the ravens win, they will play the patriots, ignoring that the jets are even in the tournament. He has been dogging the jets all year —he must be a Boston guy given his obvious bias.

  6. avatar Marvel says:

    One word: Coleman

    • avatar Brendan says:

Not too worried about him. He got exposed again yesterday, but that was because he was forced into a prominent role. With Cole/Wilson both playing very well, Coleman will be a specialty player this weekend, I think. Blitz, cover a little, but definitely blitz. Cole and Wilson showed they can cover the past few weeks, so the Jets have 5 CB’s on the roster that can at least contribute. I think the formula Rex was talking about in the offseason is finally coming into form.

      • avatar Marvel says:

If Pace wasn’t just pretending to know how to play football yesterday then I’ll be confident in our ability to get some pressure on Manning with a basic rush. But if he & Taylor can’t get it done, I want to see CB blitzes all day. When Coleman comes hot, good things happen.

I can still see images of Lowery getting picked apart by Manning last season. If we give him too much time he’s gonna find a new Lowery. (not blaming Lowery, he tried his best, and if I remember correctly he was slightly injured)

        • avatar Brendan says:

I agree. Manning’s been getting hit more than last year. Hopefully Pace can get a blind side blast on him (a la Painter, last season) and rock him early.

        • avatar Ferraro41 says:

And if Coleman is blitzing, that means he can’t get burned in coverage. A win/win!

        • avatar Bent says:

Lowery gave up a lot of catches in last year’s postseason meeting, but was actually in perfect position for all but two. Yeah, getting burned clean twice is still two times too many, but he wasn’t as bad as you might think. Coleman, Smith and Digs were the weak links in the pass defense in that game.

          • avatar Ferraro41 says:

And if memory serves correctly, didn’t the wheels sort of fall off in the slot once Strickland got hurt? I seem to recall they were doing ok until then, but once he got hurt, Manning started attacking Coleman, Digs, etc.?

            • avatar Bent says:

That and Bart Scott’s injuries happened pretty much at the same time (well, Scott came into the game hobbled, but that was the point where he had to start rotating out and was used mainly as an edge rusher when he did re-enter).

I tend to think Scott was a bigger loss, but defintely a healthy Strickland (oxymoron not intended) would have fared better than Coleman did.

      • avatar Bent says:

I don’t think he was in a prominent role. I think he was still the third CB and probably got less reps than he has in 75% of the games this season (unless I am mistaken and it changed later on – I’m only up to the middle of the first in my review process), although he did end up matched up with Steve Johnson and gave up a couple of catches to him.

However, he had another strip sack, which more than cancels out giving up two first down catches, especially when one of those turned out to be a turnover too.

It was interesting that he began the game top of the CB depth chart out of those that played, but seemingly ended up being the weakest link.

        • avatar Brendan says:

You’re right, it wasn’t a major role. I just let the plays where he ended up one-on-one with Johnson stick out in my mind.

And my overall thinking with coleman is that as a dime-CB he can be extremely effective as a blitzer.

I would expect Rex uses all 5 of his CBs this week, as the Colts will abandon the run early and try to use the same blueprint as last year.

      • avatar BamBam says:

        Hey Brendan
You noted that Wilson was playing very well. Unfortunately I didn’t get the game in my area and I wasn’t able to see this. Anything specific? Are they still working on him being a man-on-man press cover guy or are they using him more in zone? Thanks and this is good news to me.

        • avatar Brendan says:

Played a lot of man coverage. As was the case early in the season, he was always right with the receiver. But his improvements were in terms of technique.

On one play in particular, he was covering Steve Johnson. Johnson ran a come-back curl route, and Wilson appeared to have lost Johnson after Johnson’s cut. Wilson turned the wrong way (Johnson moving toward the LOS and left, Wilson was on Johnson’s outside and turned right), and with Johnson working back to the LOS and slightly left, Wilson went around Johnson’s back and came up underneath him on the left (showed good recovery speed). In Weeks 1-14/15 this is 100% a catch for Johnson. But Wilson came right up into Johnson’s body, pinning Johnson’s left arm between the two men, thus giving Wilson a perfect angle to make a play on the ball and defend the pass.

Was it a PI penalty? Possible, but it was a bang-bang play and it went along with how the refs were calling the entire game.

Overall the past couple of weeks I have seen Wilson showing a vast improvement in ball skills and route-reading.

I know I probably don’t even have to say it, but it’s obvious working with Revis he has picked these things up, as they’re staples in Revis’ game.

          • avatar BamBam says:

            I hope you are right!

The Jets need someone that QB’s fear to be located inside the numbers. If Wilson is up to the task, I’d love to see him outside on the #2, Cro on #1, and have Revis move inside to thwart teams attacking us there.

  7. LOL this is the same as last year, no respect from the media.

    • avatar njdpelc says:

I love it though. Motivate the team. Just hope they all don’t jump on the bandwagon this year though.

    • avatar BamBam says:

      +1

You are dead on with the lack of respect comment but I kind of like it when it’s us against everybody.

Did anybody hear Dan Patrick on Football Night in America dis Rex and the Jets? After the highlights they had a snippet from the Jets press conference that had Rex saying (I paraphrase) “we can beat anybody”. Dan released a sarcastic drone and went immediately to the next highlights. Basically the message was: A) I don’t believe him B) I’m not going to bother commenting on this.

    #NFL #Breaking News #Browns fire Eric Mangini #FanaticVice

    AWWWWWWWW… the ‘Mangenius’ is gone!

  9. avatar deuce4417 says:

lowery is comingt up wit hbig plays when he has gotten chances this year. wouldn’t supprise me if peyton goes after him and gets burned, pick 6 baby

  10. avatar Pete57 says:

Brendan, why is Mangini’s firing unfair?

    • avatar Brendan says:

His team is horrific? It’s one of the worst rosters in the league, but he was very competitive with it (even beating the consensus best team in the NFL when they were the “best team in the NFL”, the Pats).

I didn’t like him when he was here, like many others. But he was trying to fit into the Belichick/Parcells mold. That’s not him. He’s his own person now, and won as many games with that roster as almost any other coach could have.

Holmgren will make himself Head Coach, and watch the team move sideways instead of rise up the ranks.

      • avatar Led says:

Agree with this. Aside from Hillis, the skill players on that team are abyssmal. The only NFL-caliber QB on the roster is a second round rookie, and he only played half the games. The starting receivers would be special teams players at best on most teams. The coaching staff squeezed a lot out of that team.

  11. avatar Pete57 says:

He went 5-11 both years. Last year he ended on a high note. This year they were very bad the last few weeks. Losses to the Bengals and Bills!! I would turn the Patriots game around on you: They have the ability to beat anyone! Yet they stumbled badly the last 4 weeks, and didn’t show up for the last game.

  12. avatar Jet 4 Life says:

Its obvious the stuffy “media elite” types like Lupica, Myers etc hate everything about the Jets. They put together these molded negative stats while ignoring the good stats. They hate Rex and the swagga. We will beat Indy getting a creditable win on the road right off the bat. That will shut thier stuffy, hating as*es up for the rest of the playoffs!

  13. avatar Jack says:

I hope for media comments like these which downplay the Jets chances. This is what the Jets thrive off of. This team does not need their confidence to be fed to them by the media. They brew their own confidence in house and then bring it on the road. Let teams look past us, focus on tape of old games, and then get blasted when we come in to Lucas Oil and then Foxboro baby!

  14. avatar tyone says:

the crazy thing about this playoff run is if we beat indy then NE will their be anything left to beat baltimore or pittsburgh.

  15. avatar Pete57 says:

Well, The Pitt Balt game will be a war. The winner should be pretty beat up. And although Indy and NE will be tough to beat, they are not anywhere physically as tough as Balt and Pitt. If we are fortunate enough to get to the AFC Championship, I’m not worried about our squad being physically spent.

  16. avatar bowlingjet says:

Well the good thing is that the Jets are in the same poistion as last year pretty much. Everyone saying that we don’t have a chance yada yada yada and write us off. I think we can suprise some people again. I think the key to the Indy game of course is to pressure Manning, but also get the running game going. I think if we can develop the running game and have it be a strong suit in the game it will limit Mannings time on the field which will be key. But the D has to step it up. I think that Having LT, Greene and now I could see some McKnight sprinkled in to get a variety of RBs against Indy. You guys think we could see a little of McKnight?

    • avatar juunit says:

Only on something like a screen pass or a toss to the outside. If they leave McKnight in to pass block for a single play during the playoffs I will put my foot through the TV. Basically if they do anything but hand the majority of the runs to Greene I will put my foot through the TV.

      • avatar bowlingjet says:

That is what I was thinking. No way McKnight should be in the game alot except for Special Teams and screen passes or something along those lines, but not to three way split the carries.

        • avatar Brendan says:

If you only put a player in for certain packages, you tip off the defense and make your offense predictable and, ultimately, you take away the offense’s greatest advantage (element of surprise).

Much how Schotty brings in B. Smith as a decoy on random plays to keep defenses from gearing up for the Tiger Cat whenever he comes in. You have to have McKnight do multiple things if you want to use him effectively.

Bringing him once every 20 plays to run a screen will rarely, if ever, produce a positive play.

          • avatar juunit says:

You are right. Except we have the advantage of McKnight being an unused rookie. So they don’t really know what we’re trying to do with him when we bring him in. Any smart team would assume it’s not to pass block but then we could have him run a delayed route out of the backfield to confuse them. If Schottenheimer saves it for the right spots we can still have the element of surprise on our side.

            • avatar Brendan says:

Oh, I completely agree McKnight should be used, my comment was about the “just throw him screens” comment. You can use him in so many ways that they should definitely work him into the game, and utilize that versatility. But to just limit him to a certain play (like a screen) would lead to him becoming ineffective.

          • avatar bowlingjet says:

I was curious on whether he would be used a little more. I was thinking how greene was used more in the playoffs and being a rookie he was fresher than Jones so I thought adding McKngiht to the mix because he should be fresher could help out.

  17. Raven fan here. First time poster, long time reader. Congratulations on the playoffs and thank god we aren’t playing in indy. I went last year and it is the loudest stadium in the league. I remember sitting next to Demetrius Williams’ dad who was complaining that his son didn’t get the ball enough to which we responded because he sucks. I hope you guys can do this, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Similar to my Ravens, Peyton just does it. You all don’t have any playmakers on defense, and I don’t see how you will be able to stop him. Revis and Cromartie are good, but to think they will stop Peyton is absurd. I need a Ravens/Jets AFC championship game. It would be a great game, but I am confident we would win though our teams are virtually the same. The reason is we have more playmakers on defense (Reed, Lewis and Suggs), and Flacco is further along than Sanchez. Happy New Year everyone. I can’t wait for the playoffs to start.

  18. avatar Pete57 says:

Raven, welcome aboard. Just to counter some of your points: We have several playmakers on D. You mentioned a couple, but you missed David Harris. He was voted Team MVP. Although Ray Lewis has had a great career, right now, David Harris is better than Lewis. I agree, you should be happy about Flacco, but please compare his playoff stats to Sanchez. Sanchez has done a better job. I think you will be very surprised at the outcome of the Jet Colt game. Please come back after it is over to discuss.
