Asomugha to Jets Looks Unlikely

by Bassett on January 11th, 2011 at 11:15 am

Out in the Bay Area … there was some speculation that maybe Nnamdi might want to play for the Jets, but Manish writes today that according to sources, he’s spoken with, he doesn’t expect for the Jets to make a play on Nnamdi Asomugha.

Despite speculation that unrestricted free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha may want to play for the Jets, it’s unlikely at this point that he’ll join Gang Green, according to sources.  [….] Although Asomugha joining forces with Darrelle Revis in the secondary is a frightening notion for offensive coordinators across the league, expect the Jets’ offseason priority to be re-signing their own players. Of course, never rule anything completely out with the Jets’ active front office.

While it’s probably true, “sources” here by Manish very general, when constituted as such.  “Sources” could be anything.  It’s not specified whether they’re “league sources” or “team sources” … just “sources.” … so … meh.

Adding Nnamdi to the Jets would be awesome.  But unless Nnamdi is looking to take a small deal to be on a “contending team”, there’s really no shot that the Jets could afford him.  Moreso with everyone else they’re looking to re-sign, let alone adding at any other spots.  While there’s no current cap, any smart team would have to plan for the contingency that the salary cap will be coming back soon enough, and a contract for a guy like Nnamdi could choke a python.

Jets need to spend that money on the pass rush. Cro is sufficient in the secondary. I’d imagine Cro would have to be cut, because otherwise you’d have Cro or Aso playing nickel?

  2. avatar tyrone says:

kind of to early dont you guys think.. we are in the playoffs .thats a march issue .you wont get anything from the jets until after the season.

  3. avatar Dylan says:

Lets just re-sign Cro for half the price, add a safety with coverage skills, and use just about all of our picks to improve the pass rush.

  4. avatar juunit says:

I won’t rule it out completely until he signs somewhere else but it’s not likely he takes a large enough pay cut. Some people seem to be wondering if we can even afford Cromartie, and if we can’t afford Cromartie there’s no way we get Asomugha. I’m sure that in the draft after this coming one we’ll probably draft another CB since Rex loves them so much anyway.

  5. avatar Marvel says:

If we replace B.Smith & J.Co with rookies we should be able to make up the balance & sign Aso over Cro.. F it, let’s do Dylans plan along with attaining Aso. Aim high..(I’m gonna get killed fir this)

    Death to the Wildcat…

    • avatar juunit says:

If they’d just utilize it correctly… like having Smith run the option in the red zone… then you might even like the wildcat. I feel like the wildcat is the key to this team scoring TDs instead of FGs. Sanchez is still too inconsistent to be a TD throwing machine, I don’t even know the last time he had a passing TD.

  6. You don’t think they utilize it correctly? It’s been a very successful play for us all season. I agree I’d like to see it in the red zone more, but it’s not like it hasn’t been working for us.

    Sign:
    Dh
    Holmes
    Edwards
Cro (unless aso would take about the same money which I can’t believe he would)
somehow scrape together enough to sign Brad Smith with a creative deal
With the $.67 we have left over (not counting draft pick money), buy a pack of gum and focus on the draft, where we pick:

a pass-rushing end or pass rushing LB
    a safety
Another pass rushing end (even if we took one before)
    DL depth
    OL depth

    • avatar juunit says:

It just seems to me like they use the wildcat at completely random times when there really are some strategic situations to use it in. Maybe this is the wrong post to have brought this up, maybe we should be discussing this on the method to his madness post.

      • I agree it has been mis-used, but seems to me like a lot of times they use it to get first downs and it usually works. Shotty does have a maddening tendency to try plays at the wrong time – wrong mean going against the percentages, like that 3rd and 5 bomb on the jets next to last series. But they hit it right a lot this season with the wlidcat.

        • avatar juunit says:

I think the wildcat is great, I don’t think they use it enough. Smith doesn’t have a strong arm by any means, but why can’t we have more plays with a pass/run/keep option? Every play out of the wildcat should have all those options and just keep the receiver running the route within 20 yards. We should be using it 8-10 times a game instead of 3-5. If we had Peyton Manning as QB I’d feel differently, but we’ve got Sanchez. Although maybe it has to do with Sanchez, I remember he said he didn’t really like coming off the field for the wildcat.

  7. avatar Shifty says:

Very first order of business this offseason is to resign David Harris. After that we need to lock up Braylon longterm (a better blocker then Santonio and a bigger vertical threat). Then we need to see if we can work out a deal with Brad Smith that is good for the team. Then Santonio gets a look (unfortunately, after all the Tone Time garbage and merchandise they’re selling on NYJETS.COM, I think Braylon is the odd man out).

After that we MUST address defensive end and safety in the draft. Losing a 2nd round pick in the Cro deal is proving costly and we havent’ started building depth on the line in a long time.

Nnamdi is just too much money and doesn’t make any sense, especially when you have Revis for only 3 more years and we neglected to break the bank for him, a better player, and one of our own.

  8. avatar me & Jets says:

    Y Do Yall Want A.Cro & N.Aso Just Let A.Cro Go & Sign N.Aso..We Need To Resign D.Harris B.Smith, & B.Edwardsn & Or S.Holmes Dont Have Enuf Money..D Bags !!!!!

  9. avatar Marvel says:

The reason you draft/pick up guys like Joe McKnight, Kyle Wilson, Cole, & Cook is so you don’t have to pay a B.Smith.. The worst part about letting B.Smith walk this off-season would be the two weaks of Wallace Wright -esque posts.

    • Yeah, that marquis cole does run a mean wildcat, don’t he. I see your point that any of these 4 could develop into the special teams player smith is, but they aren’t there yet and smith has a unique skill set that makes him a threat (albeit sometimes a limited one) at several different positions.

Did you hear Collinsworth say in the broadcast on saturday night when Smith got hurt, that:

      A. Rex said that smith is irreplaceable, and
      B. That Caldwell said that they had to devote a whole session to preparing for smith?

I don’t believe that drafting/signing any of those 4 you listed has anything to do with them resigning smith, which I think they will. I suppose if McKnight explodes and becomes very diverse/dependable then maybe, but he’s not there yet.

  10. Nnamdi is going to be 30 this summer.. why waste $$ on him when we need to resign key players (harris, holmes, braylon) and pick up pass-rushers.. Nah mean?

  11. avatar JDB says:

not wanting to get ahead of the season, but If he was willing to take a on year deal to win a ring. Think Deion for the 49ers, then he might be willing to do it for less. Otherwise expect the Texans or Ravens to back the truck up for him

  12. avatar Jetnut says:

guys guys guys, if im not mistaken.

    we can let go

    Jason taylor (getting old man)
    cromartie
    drew coleman
    and VERNON GHOLSTON

and that can free up enough cap room to sign namdi to a contract similar to darrelle revis’s

if this is possible i am 20000000000000% agreeing to it, and we can just sit back and wait till the draft to draft a pass rusher and a safety while resigning most of our guys

    b edwards, holmes, harris, smith,

  13. avatar JayM says:

Trade Revis for picks or D help keep Cro and sign Aso, problem solved hehe

  14. avatar johhnyjetson says:

do you see a chance the jets dont re sign harris? tanny has said before that we cant keep everyone and ilb position being a easier position to find a replacement then corner, safety or wr there could be a possibility that they let him walk. it would be a stupid move and one i dont want but rex loves cb’s and if he has a chance to have 2 lock downs cb’s over a ilb then he might lean that way.

  15. avatar nj-e-t-sfx says:

The first order of business is to win Sunday, again the following Sunday, and again in Dallas.

If for some reason that doesn’t happen, we should address whatever the reasons are.

In the meantime, there are 24 other teams that can worry about this stuff.

  16. avatar jet 4 life says:

No way on adding Assi! We need to re-sign D.Harris and Braylon. Say goodbye to Tone. We cant sign both receivers. Holmes will cost more. Two great receiver is a luxuary. We need to lure a pass rushing DE or OLB. Will resign CRo if for right price. Safety who can cover is also key.

  17. avatar JCVD says:

Signing Braylon is a priority because he’s the only guy that can really stretch/jump for the high throws by the sanchize. I would say that 25% of the catches he’s made, cotch or Tone would never get up that high.

  18. avatar Frank A says:

Can he play DE? Otherwise we don’t need him.

  19. avatar Marvel says:

Random: If Braylon would have dropped the passes that Holmes dropped this season, nobody would want him back.

  20. avatar jim says:

cmon fellas, the focus should be on sunday afternoon at 4:30pm. you’ll have all spring/summer to debate who the jets should or shouldn’t sign. let’s concentrate on the task at hand and beat the pats! DALLAS OR BUST!

  21. avatar jet 4 life says:

Another good point on Braylon. He’s the one we keep. Brad Smith is also a luxuary. He is after Cro on the pecking order.WE NEED A PASS RUSH WITHOUT A BLITZ! That is where all available money after Harris, Braylon and CRo needs to go. Its been a glaring weakness which Rex has brilliantly masked for 2 years. Teams have now figured out our blitz. If we get 2 dominant rushers WATCH OUT for our D!

    • Keep bray and tone. It can be done (per bent many times) and tone won about 3 games for us. Funny, whoever is a hero this week, everyone wants the other guy gone!

    • avatar C Low says:

When this debate heated last week I said you were crazy to re-sign Holmes and not Edwards. I think last week’s game proved why. Bray does it all, just ask LT. Plus a 4 game suspension for DWI is less risky than a 1 more strike full year for smoking weed. Speaking of Holmes and weed, he had to be smoking something to pull that crap on the “punt return” in the opening minutes of the games last Saturday. Idiot.

      • If tone is gone and we do not replace him with another serious threat, bray is less effective, simple as that. Agree that that punt return was insane – has anyone asked tone about that yet publicly? Haven’t read a thing about it.

      • avatar juunit says:

The only problem with that, is if Edwards does get a four game suspension for the DUI, that will be his second player conduct violation as well. So both he and Holmes will be one strike away from a full year suspension.

  22. avatar jet 4 life says:

I am Jim. But a little multi tasking isnt a bad thing. Our team is only a contender now. We have the potential to be perrineal favorites for the forseeable future if theses moves are made correctly.

  23. avatar Marvel says:

    Cut/gone

    Ellis
    Woody
    Taylor
    Thomas
    Ghost
    Coleman
E.Smith-(I liked seeing him at LB)(him & Diggs could be …. Nah)
    T.Rich
    Kris Jenkins
    Holmes

We have replacements for some, obviously the others will be replaced with draft picks/FAs.. Look I play Madden Revis/Aso would be EPIC.. Lol

    • avatar johhnyjetson says:

      to add to ur list…

      clemens

pool (has played better as of late)

      hartstock

    • Without knowing the cap ramifications of each of your suggestions, I agree with all except holmes. Now, if any of your cut suggestions are dirt cheap to keep, I might re-think.

      • avatar johhnyjetson says:

according to nyjetscap.com if the jets dont bring back ellis/thomas/woody then they would be saving approx 10.5 mill

        • avatar Bent says:

          The saving is actually 8.2m.

Not bringing back Ellis doesn’t represent a saving because he’s not under contract next year anyway, so his salary isn’t included in their future cap charges.

          • But if we cut Thomas, are we drafting his replacement? I agree with drafting a push rushing lb, just might be a big assumption to suggest that we get the right guy to step in.

          • avatar johhnyjetson says:

ok but u still have to deduct from the cap the money he made this year which will not be on the books next year…am i right or worng?

            • avatar Bent says:

JJ- It’s customary to use the money on next year’s cap figure as your starting point.

If you want to treat every free agent as if they are all going to be resigned, then the starting position would be over the cap and having to make multiple cost-cutting moves just to get under the cap, let alone sign anyone else.

I prefer to look at available cap space and then deduct the likely cost of those you choose to bring back.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Woody probably has a replacement (Vladdy)

      You just cut:

2/3 of our OLB. Hopefully the draft comes with the Jets taking a pass rusher high, but that still leaves a run-stopping OLB as a need.

2 DE – Devito, Pouha, Dixon/Gilbert, Pitoitua, Jenks. They should be OK here, probably look for one more cheap body. Possibly keeping Pryce will make this a solid unit.

Nickelback – Wilson/Cole look ready to play this role.

Safety – 2nd biggest need outside of pass rusher.

      T-rich has a replacement

Holmes is our best receiver. We should hope they hold onto him, because Braylon/Holmes become much less effective without the other one there.

Jenks will probably be back. I want him back for an internal pass rush. But if he gets cut it’s for $ and hopefully he returns for cheaper.

Overall, good list. It obviously won’t be 100% accurate, but this list shows there are certainly savings to be found.

      • avatar Marvel says:

Thanks, the best part about it is the core is still rock solid.(assuming we sign the obvious keepers)

Sanchez, Keller, Greene, Edwards, Scott, Harris, Revis, Mangold, Brick, etc.. A lot of very good/above average players. Tanny has a chance to really take his name to a higher level this off-season. Hope he makes us proud.

      • and what is the over/under on how long jenkins lasts? Through training camp? Don’t get me wrong, I want him back too, just sick of planning around him every year to lose him early.

        • avatar Brendan says:

I think if they put him on the PUP list, which seems like the wisest thing, I think he can be healthy and come back.

He tore his ACL in Carolina, and while he was younger, he didn’t rush back and came back the next season healthy and his dominant self, going to the Pro Bowl the next season and made All-Pro the season after.

This season he rushed back, and for whatever reason wasn’t wearing a brace.

He hurt himself basically the second the season started. He has a full year to recover, and if put on the PUP list he gets at least 6 more weeks. Instead of blowing up and then hiring a dietitian, he’s been keeping his weight down since he got hurt. He should come back healthy enough to give them 30 snaps, hopefully more. How long he holds up? That’s anyone’s guess.

      • avatar johhnyjetson says:

can u take the chance on keeps jenks here and then week 3 hes on ir? he makes to much money for a player that in the last 2 years has played 6 games..i think its to big of a risk unless he re-does his contract i dont see him staying here

  24. avatar C Low says:

John Abraham has 1 year left of his contract, $8MM. If ATL goes deep or wins it all you think they would entertain a trade? Or should we go down the draft route again and roll the dice on another potential Gholston? I would take the one year band iad with ability to re-sign. (Plus, I still have his jersey)

  25. avatar neauone says:

The question isn’t who we should sign, but who should we let go to create room for the signings. Ellis,Taylor, and E.Smith should go. B.Thomas could go, as could B.Scott. Before I cut or release or let B.Smith go, I cut the rookie RB and sign Smith. He is an asset to the Jets. So the Jets could do alot of shuffling this offseason. Tanny has a knack of signing players, restructuring contracts and picking up players for draft choices. Edwards I would think is all but gone, Cro gets signed as does Holmes. Remember something about Tanny, he got Cro for a 2nd rounder, got L.T. for free, got Holmes for a 5th rounder and got Taylor for for nothing too. As always the league will be scratching their head at the personnel moves we make during the offseason. It happens every year.

    • avatar johhnyjetson says:

bart scott isnt going anywhere…calvin pace would be cut first before scott goes anywhere

    • Wow! keep bray, keep mcknight (not an either or with b smith) KEEP B SCOTT (does the dirty work and gets no credit)

      • avatar johhnyjetson says:

now u can make a case for calvin pace getting cut or taking a pay cut..he hasnt done much to warrant the kind of contract that he was given. hes suppose to be our best pass rusher and take away the bills game what did he really do all year long?

    • avatar Brendan says:

McKnight is the future. You cut him now and 31 teams call his agent.

What led you to name B. Scott? His stat line? Well, if you replace Scott with an average ILB that does the dirty work (like he does), Harris’ stat line is mediocre because he’s getting smashed by O-linemen all game.

    • Cut Bart Scott? I stopped reading after you made that idiotic question. I mean I refuse to even entertain such idiocy. Cut Bart! You must of lost your god forsaken mind!

  26. avatar Marvel says:

    BGA-
How many times did Cromartie play bump & run on Garcon as opposed to backing off, and what was the catch/yardage differential.

  27. avatar blueballs says:

nnamdi said he would play on the same team as revis in the offseason if you remember

  28. avatar Jason says:

I think speculating on players right now, other than our own, is probably a waste. If Cromartie and Coleman get lit up this week you can bet that the Jets will at least be interested in Asomugha. I still think the Raiders will make a move to keep him. His dead cap hit is insane and to not even have him on the team at the number is equally crazy.

  29. avatar david harris says:

i think if we have 12 million dollars in open cap space (which is highly unlikely) we should use it on haloti ngata rather than nmandi. we need the pass rush, we drafted a high end cb prospect last year, we simply do not need nmandi… unless ofcourse this is another uncapped year and we sign him to a 1 year 12 mill contract…

    • No way the Ravens let Ngata go anywhere. Difference here is that Aso made sure that he had a “No Franchise Tag” stipulation in his contract.

    • From the Baltimore Sun:

“I don’t want to speak out of turn, but nobody would disagree with the fact that Haloti Ngata is a guy that we have every intention of making a Raven forever,” coach John Harbaugh said at the NFL owners meetings in March.

    • avatar runleon29 says:

      “so, you’re sayin’ there’s a chance…”

bart scott, jim leonhard, and trevor pryce all jumped at the chance to leave Baltimore and play for Rex in NY.

clearly, the money is on Ngata staying in Baltimore, but i’d give rex and tannenbaum a punchers chance to make it happen.

  30. If there is no 3-4 OLB pass rusher on the market we are perfectly fine and should just re-sign everybody. And Can you people please stop the madness, stop asking for a DE who can rush the passer that’s not what 3-4 DE’s main responsibility.
I don’t ,ean to be a jerk or nitpick but if you are going to demand something at least know what your asking for.

    • avatar Brendan says:

We are not “perfectly fine”. One of the signatures of an elite defense is pressure, and the Jets can’t generate any.

There are a LOT of pass rushers in the draft, and a few coming out in FA.

But even if there isn’t one “on the market” the team is not “perfectly fine”.

    • avatar juunit says:

The defense isn’t a 3-4 anyway, it’s a hybrid. If we signed two 4-3 pass rushing DEs then Rex would use the 4-3 more often. We’re not going to not sign a DE just because we run a 3-4 the majority of the time.

      • avatar Marvel says:

        +1

I was literally just thinking the same thing.. & if your rush OLB(Taylor) can’t cover what’s the difference..

      • If we sign a 4-3 DE he would get abused when asked to drop back in coverage which most 3-4 OLB’s do and if we asked him to rush the whole time he would get manhandled. Also QB’s would read us like a book if we brought him only on certain situations. “o the 4-3 DE is in it’s a blitzing play.”

        Brendan-
I dont understand how being a Top 5 defense isn’t “perfectly fine” and if we draft a 3-4 OLB he won’t contribute right away. Clay Matthews had so e sacks last year but he wasn’t the monster he is now and Green Bay got lucky with him. My point is if their isn’t a experienced 3-4 OLB in FA we just resign our people and try again next year.

        • avatar Brendan says:

          “and try again next year”?

No. Sorry, but I can’t simply go into the 2011 season with the same issues as 2010. That’s regressing, not improving.

They’re a top 5 defense, but it’s smoke and mirrors. They’re good, not great, and never will be great as currently constructed.

Really? 3-4 LB’s can’t contribute right away? Just because the Jets’ 3-4 prospect didn’t pan out, doesn’t mean that none of them will. Getting after the QB is in their DNA, it’s natural, and therefore the easiest thing for these players to do.

And your point about Matthews is what, exactly? He had TEN sacks as a rookie. How is that not a monster season?

Green Bay got lucky by trading up, back into the first round, to take Matthews?

Sorry, but the 3-4 RUSH LB is a necessity, not a luxury. They need one to remain deominant.

          • I meant a Rookie won’t contribute right away and what are the chances we get another Clay Matthews. If Rex and them find one I’m all for drafting him but taking on a project just isn’t smart to me.

        • Lantern – you’re acting like we are a 3-4 D – we’re not, we are a hybrid. We need a DE who can generate some pressure and a LB who is an edge rusher. Look at how teams have “figured us out” and approached us differently this year compared to last – if we do not improve our pass rush next year, we will start to get abused.

          • Y’all are missing the point. I’m not saying our Pass rush isn’t a problem. What I’m saying is we are mainly a 3-4 team and Id rather wait for a complete 3-4 OLB then get a 4-3 de who can only play in certain situations.

            • but you’re missing the point – we are not mainly a 3-4 team. We are a true hybrid that lines up as few as 1 and as many as 5 DL.

              • If we aren’t mainly a 3-4 teM then how does Harris,Scott,Thomas, and Pace stay on the field a majority of the time? Just be ause we play other fronts doesn’t mean that we aren’t MAINLY a 3-4 team.

                • avatar Bent says:

Thomas doesn’t play as regularly as you think. Sometimes less than half the game. 13 snaps on Saturday.

The ONLY time the Jets play 3-4 is when DeVito and Pouha are in, which is only about half the time (and both do also get time in 4-3 sets).

      • Also if If were not a 3-4 how come we mainly have 3 down lineman and 4 linebackers?

        • avatar juunit says:

Mainly but not all the time. There are times we rush four and have three linebackers and there are times we rush five and have two linebackers. Based on what you’re saying though if there isn’t a guy capable of rushing the passer and dropping into coverage that is worthy of our first round pick then we should get a NT. Which I don’t necessarily disagree with because we could use one of them too. But how often do we ask Ellis, Pouha or Devito to drop back into coverage anyway?

        • avatar Brendan says:

Because we use LB’s who can put their hand in the ground and become a down lineman. Hence the “hybrid” 3-4, which actually had more 4-man fronts than 3-man fronts last season.

        • You guys are talking about getting a 4-3 de though! There aren’t many 4-3 d lineman who can play in space and drop back. Making them 4-3 de’s. If y’all want to get a player who only plays on certain snaps and downs thats y’all.
I want a 3-4 OLB who can be on the field at all times.

        • avatar Bent says:

          We don’t.

We have 4 man fronts about half of the time on 1st and 2nd down and nearly always go 3-3-5 or 3-2-6 on passing downs.

  31. avatar Ed L says:

now that we are on the topic…

    bent,

what is your opinion and what will be done this offseason based on your cap numbers…

i want your opinion because it is much more objective when you understand the cap..

no offense to anyone else lol

  32. Looking at the Raiders, would you rather have Aso or Richard Seymour, who will be a UFA this offseason? He fits more of a need than Aso does at this point.

  33. avatar WW85 says:

The rest of this playoff run will go a long way determing what we do with all these guys.

When we win Sunday, I bet a lot of opinions about who stays/goes will change in a big way.

    • avatar Ed L says:

      very very true…

if holmes scores a td and goes for 100 yards and we win and bray bray has no impact then everyone will be calling for holmes again..

i like both wrs…they each have their own skill set…i honestly think braylon is a fantastic blocker and is one of big reasons are running game is so good to the outside…but holmes is really a playmaker and can break one on a slant route…

it is a tough choice…so why not keep both?

  34. avatar jet 4 life says:

Green Lantern. That is not accuarte. It is USUALLY the OLB in the 3-4 that rushes the passer but thier are ends that do to. See the guy where all talking about for instance Haloti Ngata.

Hypothetically….Who would you rather sign…Holmes or Asomugha?

  38. We really don’t even need to be talking about this until the season is over, right now we should be focussed on New England. I will say this though. Forget about Asomugha, we have other priorities. First we have to sign David Harris to a long term contract, then we have to keep Bray and maybe Santonio. I know you all LOVE Brad Smith, but he is replacable in IMO. So, is Santonio for that matter. How many Santoni Holmes-type players can you find in the draft each year. Maybe not as good as Tone but very similar skill types are all over the place in the mid-rounds. Gotta keep Cro too. Then we have to address the safety and pass rush. I miss Kerry Rhodes, last year was just an off season for him, he wasn’t accostumed to Rex’s style of defense. He absolutely flourished in Mangini’s first few years. Boy was he great in coverage, but we threw him away for garbage draft picks and now we need a new safety. Dwight Lowery deserves a shot though.

We don’t need Aso – we need a pass rush, that’s what made the secondary so effective last year. when we force bad throws we defend the pass. that’s simple logic.

Love to see Aso in a Green&Gold uniform next year. He would jump at the chance to play alongside his boy Charles Woodson. Couple him with Williams at CB and let #21 and Clay-maker wreak havoc at the line of scrimmage….Dom would have a field day next year!!

  41. I think we have a better chance to get Champ Bailey, who is also a free agent. He is older than Aso, and might be willing to take a discount to win a championship. Revis, Bailey and Cro would be insane, and a little more plausible, money wise, than Revis, Aso and Cro.
