Cromartie’s Not Backing Down

by Bassett on January 12th, 2011 at 6:00 pm

While Lisa reported that Cromartie didn’t take his words back, Jenny Vrentas of the Star-Ledger, notes that Antonio Cromartie didn’t back down from his strident comments yesterday, actually amping up the rhetoric.

Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie dared Tom Brady to come after him, the day after expressing his hatred for the Patriots quarterback publicly.

"I hope so; I really do," Cromartie said. "I hope he’ll throw the ball 10 times my way. Make him pay. That’s the only thing you can do {…] Why would I regret them?" Cromartie said when asked if he regrets his comments. "That’s my opinion; that’s how I feel about it. There’s no reason for me to sit back and take back anything I said about him, and I’m not."

Asked what he thought Brady’s reaction would be, or if he cared, he dismissed the question.

"No," Cromartie said. "Don’t care. Next question."

The more this goes, the more I really do think that this is a calculated risk by the Jets.  Go ahead Tom Brady, you know you want to make him look bad.  Embarrass him.  Let’s see what happens.

oh boy. i hope that rex has some tricks up his sleeve and this is all planned.

CROW PISSED ABOUT LAST GAME AGAISNT THEM. GOOD FOR YOU ANTONIO STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE AND BEING A MAN!!!!THATS RIGHT.

  5. avatar SYJ says:

The problem with Brady isn’t that he’s smug, etc., it’s THAT HE CHEATS AT FOOTBALL. I’m surprised this isn’t a bigger story. A 10-1 TD/INT ratio is no more credible on its face than 70+ home runs in a season. This simply cannot represent a realistic talent/coaching differential between Brady/Pats and the rest of the league. You didn’t need ironclad proof to know Bonds was a steroid abuser. We already have ironclad proof Brady’s success has rested, in the past, on knowing what the defense is doing next. I have no doubt that, five years, ten years from now, the NFL is going to have a big PR problem. OK, rant off.

    • avatar toro rosso says:

it’s very obvious that the pats receive preferential treatment. that’s true of the pats having a disproportionate amount of success vs the rest of the league. they simply do everything right and nothing wrong ,which defies logic. i’ll be surprised if the pats are called for offensive holding at all on sunday, and if they do, the refs will find a way to rectify soon after. that’s kind of bias in the nfl, business as usual, and we’ve seen it for years.

      • avatar bilal says:

sorry but you guys sound like sore losers… or losers. either one

        • avatar SYJ says:

I hear you, but why should I get amped up for a game my team may have no chance of winning, because the NFL refuses to guarantee a level playing field? It’s true, I was a sore loser when Clemens beat the Mets, but it was also true, Clemens was shot full of illegal substances. I can say Waaa-waaa after the Pats win the SB this year; it doesn’t change the truth of whether they travestied the rule book to do it.

  6. avatar HHH says:

Tom before the season said he hates the Jets!! so unless a hatred for a team goes up, i dont see why we have to fabricate everything!

  7. I f’n love this! as a hardcore fan i want the players on the jets to hate our rivals as much as i do. F the pats and their ugg boot wearing qb.

  8. avatar jay says:

GOOD! IM GLAD WHAT HE SAID!F TOM BRADY.

  9. avatar Joe S. says:

    I hate the Patriots!

I am praying the Jets defence can pound Brady and Pick SIX him at least 2 times.

    J…E…T…S… JETS JETS JETS

  10. Hmmm, knowing all the shallow comings and goings of celebrity couples…

Is Tom in jeopardy of losing his lady if he’s merely an also-ran player on another losing team after Sunday, instead of a walking photo-op superstar?

  11. avatar michael says:

Why don’t we have Revis saying these things??? I’d love for Brady to try to get revenge on Revis. Cromartie couldn’t cover Branch for crap… this is a recipe for disaster.

  12. avatar HHH says:

I would trade what we did to Eli manning in preseason for that to be Tom!!

  13. avatar juunit says:

Uh-oh Cromartie’s getting amped up for this game. Maybe he’ll play angry and get physical for once. We can only hope.

  14. avatar david harris says:

this game has the makings to turn very nasty very fast. i predict quite a few injuries in this one. looks like there will be some snow as well… oh boy here we go.

  15. avatar Lafflin says:

Cromartie…if only he was good, but he’s not. I love Rex, and all the things he says. Cromartie doesn’t have the leverage Rex does caused he’s not very good.
Cromartie often looks like a horse trying to cover a cat. I hope to god that Cromartie somehow rises to the occasion. I pray that he does’t look clumsy and confused again.

    • avatar WOJF says:

lmao, horse covering a cat, exactly!

He has trouble with small quick receivers, and has no right to be talking trash.

      • avatar Bent says:

Maybe, but he said nothing about Brady’s on-field ability…even if he was the NFL’s worst cornerback and even if he gives up five TDs on Sunday, that doesn’t mean what he said was wrong.

As MTF pointed out earlier, there is a bit of a double standard with the golden boy image for Brady and the scorn poured upon Cromartie.

        • avatar jon in bk says:

Eh, i’ll call BS on that. There’s a substantial difference, whether you acknowledge it or not, between saying you hate a team (which most of us would agree is how things should be in the NFL) and calling out one guy to say he’s an a**hole (one difference is that you can say only one of these terms on this blog).

Plus, fair or not, you have to keep in mind the images that the two guys have in the league.

      • avatar KenEB says:

Of course, if Cromartie stomps the cat with his hoof at the line of scrimmage, it might make the job of covering a lot easier.

  16. avatar mikebe1 says:

It’s hard not to say ignorant things with posters like don around but ceo needs to relax he did give up 5 catches for 117 yds last week I hope he does better this week.I don’t think Rex has a plan I think he’s just being honest and as far a cro he seems frustrated with Brady

  17. avatar Jay in NYC says:

When asked if what another team says can have an effect on the outcome of a game, Brady said: “We’ll see Sunday at 7:30.”

The game is at 4:30, Tom.

  18. avatar WOJF says:

Just when there was a tiny little chance that the Pats could take the Jets lightly after the blowout last game, they just had to go out and open their traps.

Couldn’t just stay humble for a week and try to sneak up on them?

  19. avatar JETS says:

he is claiming it will be clear after the game whether it had an impact.

    • avatar Bent says:

He’s wrong though. If the Pats win, nobody will be saying “I bet the Jets would’ve won if Cromartie didn’t call out Brady”.

Is Brady going to say “They’re a better team than us – thank goodness they talked trash”? No.

  20. avatar Joe S. says:

Brady will run off the field without shaking anyone’s hand.

His standard move when he gets his ass kicked!

    • avatar Bent says:

Actually, with the focus on him, he’ll probably be on his best behavior…which would make this game the exception that proves the rule.

  21. avatar f brady says:

cro held his own on garcon how many corners can cover that guy he is way better than any pats wr cromarite will finally play pump in run. jets must see something in the film room a pats weakness they might expose

  22. avatar WW85 says:

Why would the Jets hope for Brady to challenge Cro? I guess because Cro will have safety help all day & we have some plan for the safety to jump routes?

This trash talk is fine & good…as long as Cro can back it all up on the field. Brady backs it up every week–ass….or not.

  23. avatar Matt E. says:

Let’s recap, Mr. 7-6-5, seven kids by 6 mothers in 5 different states, says he hates one of the best qb’s to ever play the position.
I’ve been a Jet fan since prior to SB III, 42 years ago today, but we’ve had nothing to mouth off about since then. Cromartie, shut up!

    • avatar 51 Year Jet Fan says:

I’ve been a fan longer than you and the SOJ’s died last year. Get with the new era. We shall never fear any opponent, anymore. We will maintain the swagger forever more(as long as Rex is the Coach)!!!! GO JETS !!!!

    • avatar geoff says:

how many times has this kind of talk come back to bite you in the arse? I thought the plan is for Rex to do the talking and let the players play? tim not happy that cro said that, i will never be happy with a player mouthing off. stfu and do your job.

    • Matt,

Those of us who’ve been around since the beginning, such as 51 and myself and others, have spent way too many years following neat, clean, soft-spoken teams that proved fatally mediocre as they colored inside the lines at all times.

That Supe III team you seem to have jumped on the bandwagon for was one of the very few times that the freshness of swagger and trash talking have been allowed in this franchise, and Oh, My! seem also to coincide with on-the-field excellence.

I’ll take that combination any day of the week. Happily.

We all thank you also for taking the opportunity to rehash, and craftily re-insert, Cro’s personal off-field situation to use as simple invective when it has absolutely no bearing on this game. Plus, by omitting Brady’s equally non-germane personal off-field woes, you’ve successfully re-established the ugly double-standard many of us have been railing against all day.

We assume that you feel that your personal foibles are equally germane to this discussion. We would respectfully disagree.

      • Well said. Brady is not a saint. People often look at me in horror when I recount dancing and cheering when his leg (knee?) got mangled a few years ago. I couldn’t have been happier.

I was only sad that it didn’t end his career. I hate the guy.

  24. avatar zach jet says:

We are so screwed. There’s no way we’re gonna win now. Cromartie is soooo bad! I hate him so much. He does the stupidest stuff when he’s playing. And now he want Brady to throw at him. He’s gonna get burnt on sunday.

I sure do hope we win, dont get me wrong, but its gonna be tough without woody. It really hurts are ability to run the ball.

    Lets go jets!

  25. avatar johnnyreefer says:

if we play our football, we will win.

if we let them play their football we will lose.

    that is all.

  26. avatar Joe S. says:

I Love Rex and what he does. I Love that it’s Jets talk 24/7. If you’re a true Jet fan get with the program and stop whinning.

Rex will make the Jets the New Americas Team with several Superbowl wins before it ends! Those Dallas guy’s and Jones in particular have pissed all their glory away.

Rex will be the Jets coach for life just like Jeff Fisher (16 Years & counting)is with the Titans!

    J…E…T…S… JETS JETS JETS

  27. avatar Matt E. says:

I love the Jets, but the ultimate prize is still the Lombardi trophy, for what takes place on the field. Until then, under the “new era”, Rex’s Jets have to settle for the Linda Lovelace award, for having the biggest mouth.

    • avatar ssx tricky says:

Her mouth had nothing to do with her fame lmao! but seriously jets will win tom brady will be an average qb next year and so on for the rest of his carrer he’ll prolly end up a back up qb for the rams when its all said and done.

  28. avatar Joe S. says:

I don’t think you’re a true Jets fan. Giants fans make comments like that.

  29. I am a Jet’s fan since 1968. And this bunch frankly embarrasses me. Bunch of moronic thugs.

  30. avatar Joe B. says:

    I have a question:

What kind of fantasyland do you people live in where the Pats were going to go less than 100% all in against the Jets this week? This trash talk, if you can call it that, makes absolutely no difference. They want to kill us and the Jets want to kill them. Nothing anybody says or does before gameday is going to alter that.

Some of you Jet fans make me sick. Rex’s one message since he’s come here is that we shouldn’t have to be the bridesmaids and little brothers anymore. Not for the Pats, not for the Giants, not for anyone. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough of having to speak about the Pats with reverence all the damn time. I respect their success, but I hate them more than I hate any team in all of sports, and it’s a GOOD thing that the guys on my team do too. I don’t want there to be friends between the two teams. I don’t want my coaches and players to be tiptoeing around them for fear of angering them. That’s a sissy attitude and it’s part of what keeps you in the cellar while they’re in the penthouse.

Obviously, if the Jets get beaten on Sunday, I’ll be upset. But I’ll take some solace in knowing that this team isn’t afraid of the Patriots or what anyone thinks of them, nor should they be.

  31. avatar BigBadBob says:

Its pretty easy to see that when cross backs off the reciever he’s not going to have safety help, when he plays up and jams the guy at the line he is going to have help. Its how garcon beat him on Saturday for the TD. I would give him help every play. Cro works better when he uses his God given talent (long arms). Otherwise you’ll see cros reciever running post patterns across the field where Brady just has to place the ball over our lbs all night. All this talking cro is doing, set him up to physical at the line.

  32. Let them talk. Let them curse. Let them behave poorly.

Just let them win. None of this matters if they go out and win.

They CAN win. It’s the WILL I am not sure about.

  33. Bassett, if you are right and this is a calculated risk, wouldn’t it have been smarter to have Revis diss brady and not cro? It might not be in character for revis to curse brady out, but he could certainly say that brady knows he can’t throw on him, that he won’t even try and use peyton as an example.

    • avatar Brendan says:

If Revis disses Brady, given his calm demeanor throughout his young career, it would be picked up on immediately as a mind game. Everyone thinks Cro will get eviscerated by Brady, everyone except Cro and Rex. That’s telling. Brady will try to pick apart Cro just like he did to the Steelers safety from a few years ago.

      Let’s GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
