Game Recap: As if There was Ever Any Doubt, Jets Beat Pats 28-21.
All week long, the talking heads tried to make this game sound like a fair fight. On every pre-game show, someone was assigned the unpleasant task of reminding the viewers that, among the Patriots two regular season losses, one of them was to the New York Jets. Every analytical discussion show featured washed-up coaches or ex-NFLers dutifully showing film of how well the Jets had played defense the week before against the Colts. They made sure to mention Mark Sanchez’s post season record of success, three wins against only one loss.
But, inevitably, they would then tell the other side of the story. Rex Ryan’s mouth was the first factor to be mentioned; followed quickly by allusions about his weight. “Blowhard” and “fool” were hinted at, but never said outright. Rex, or so it seemed, had poked the great bear with a stick, picking on the great Tom Brady; he had angered the Gods with his bravado. Stupid, they suggested, in quite reasonable tones. By the time the television presentations were getting into gear, they were showing film of the December 6 rout. It was obvious, wasn’t it, that the New England Patriots were an unstoppable juggernaut? New York would be facing blitzkrieg on Sunday afternoon, and the poor Jets had the misfortune to only speak French. Rex would build his line, but within minutes, the Wehrmacht would dismantle it; bypass it like it wasn’t even there. Nothing could stop Bill Belichick’s inevitable march to another Super Bowl.
No one really believed the Jets would win. They had been fair, because it was their duty to do so, but the Jets were just overmatched. Everyone knew that, didn’t they?
Well, for the entire CBS News crew every one of which predicted a Patriots victory; for the analysts of the NFL pregame shows on NFL network each one of which foresaw a Patriots victory; for everyone on Fox; every one on ‘Inside the NFL’ except for big Warren; with special mention to the part-time sports reporters who don’t normally cover the Jets, like Gary Myers, and Mike Lupica, and Mike Francesa, and especially for Joe Benigno who bails on his own team every season; sorry boys and oh by the way: if you will, please, at your earliest convenience: Go perform a drastically impossible sex act on yourselves. The Jets won 28-21 in Gillette, in front of a hostile crowd that wanted nothing better than to see the Jets run out of the building, in a game that the Jets dominated nevertheless virtually from start to finish. The Patriots, it would seem, never had a chance. I feel bad. But, I can live with it.
Before recapping the game, let me point out that I have no wish for harm to come to anyone. Reports reached my desk this week that Patriots’ fans would be sucking the gas pipe in large numbers if the Patriots failed to win, not just this game, but this year’s Super Bowl. For those Patriots’ fans still lucid enough to see reason, I wish to say that ‘it’s only a game.’ ‘Better luck next year.’ Don’t harm yourselves. For the others too far gone to reach, let’s hope for early and quick medical intervention.
As for the recap, this game was particularly hard to write. Most of us spent the entire game watching the Jets win the game, but few of us really noticed how the Jets won the game. There was a kind of unreal quality to it.
It looked bleak at the start. A stalled drive leading to a punt. Then the Patriots got the ball and started driving like we weren’t in front of them. Brady hadn’t thrown a pick in two months. They’ve scored thirty for seven straight games. They were eating up yardage in vintage style. It was going to be a long day. But, then, suddenly David Harris streaked the other way picking off Brady and running it back to the Patriots ten. Wow! But, he didn’t get in. We ran one play for a loss. Confusion. We ran another play for another loss and we were shooting ourselves in the foot. A running play recovered the lost yardage but we needed a field goal. It was a gimme, but Nick Folk missed it. Ugh! It’s gonna be a long day.
The Patriots, of course, got the ball back and started driving again, but I started to notice a difference. It wasn’t so easy for Brady. Near the red zone, the defense stiffened. A critical third and five didn’t get converted and the Pats had to settle for a field goal. It should have been 7-7, or 7-3 or 3-3; still it wasn’t so bad. Most of the first quarter was gone and we were only down by three. The biggest question going into the game had been, do the Jets belong here, playing the widely acknowledged Future King? The defense responded and the answer was becoming clearer. We belonged.
Then the Jets get the ball and did a little better on offense, but they stalled again. Sanchez, though, who had been inaccurate the whole first quarter seemed to be settling down. And, the defense held the Patriots to a three and out. A three and out! Then, the Jets’ offense started to roll. It began on a third and eight. The non-existent Patriots’ pass rush made Sanchez move his feet and in sliding to his left, he saw Braylon Edwards had outrun his coverage. He signaled him to the sideline, and hit him for 37 yards down to the eight. But, this time, the Jets finished with a nifty little option to LT in the corner. It was 7-3. The light seemed to be dawning in Jets’ fans minds. It was more than twenty minutes in and we were in the lead. Wow!
Then, Bill Belichick blundered! Trying to sustain a drive and frustrated at their lack of progress, he called a fake punt direct snap to Patrick Chung, a defensive player. But, as everyone knows, if they could catch, they’d play offense, and he bobbled it while the defense caught up to him and they lost a yard. Jets’ ball on the New England 37! They drove into the red zone and, on third down again, Sanchez hit Braylon Edwards again, and he dragged two defenders into the end zone. Wow! It was 14-3.
From there on, it’s all impressions to me. The half finished with that same 14-3 score. I expected the Patriots to run the second half opening kick off right into the end zone on five quick plays, but they didn’t. The defense kept making plays. Sean Ellis was a monster with two sacks. The Jets would collect five in all, a playoff record for the club. There were superb plays by Mike DeVito, David Harris, Drew Coleman who had a nice sack, the entire secondary who covered the Patriots like a blanket all game with special mention to Brodney Pool who played really well, and, of course, Revis. As a unit, they were stellar. They gave up over three hundred yards and a lot of first dwons, but not a lot of scores. They bent, but didn’t break, just like last week. As a matter of fact, in two week facing the two best QBs in the league and two top ten offenses, the defense has surrendered only 35 points. And, by the way, to my knowledge (I’ve been wrong before), it was the first time in the century that the Patriots have been defeated by the same team in the regular and the post-season.
On offense, Jerrico Cotchery had an impact early and late, nothing more important than a fifteen yard seam route up the middle, that he turned into a 58-yarder when the Patriots had closed the gap to three points at the end of a tense third quarter. That drive would reclaim seven of the eight points the Patriots had added to make it close. Santonio Holmes capped the drive with one of those catches he gets paid for, off balance, tapping his feet in bounds in the back corner of the end zone. It was a thing of beauty.
The Patriots would score ten more points, the Jets would add seven. The final score looked like a simple trade of touchdowns, but it was more gripping than that, and a lot stranger. Belichick would try two onsides kicks in the end, and convert neither of them. Every time the Pats scored, the Jets answered. It was tense, but it was never all that close.
As it happened, Belichick didn’t have the horses. Eschewing talented first rounders draft after draft, and letting proven Pro Bowlers leave for other clubs, Belichick was determined to make it happen with his squad of no-names. In the end, no names helped him win. As for the Jets, it was the playmakers who made the plays, like Sean Ellis, Braylon Edwards, and Holmes, and important contributions, too, from the lunch pail guys like Cotchery and Eric Smith and Pool. You need both, and Belichick has forgotten that.
So, we keep rolling. Next week in Pittsburgh for a rematch. It won’t be easy. They’re a great defensive club. But, if all goes well, well … I’ll just leave it at that.

Tell em, us VS the World, and the Mother F’n Jets are back in the AFC championship game, oh those same ol jets ;p
-
What?
How could the pats have lost? They have WOODHEAD!
…And besides brady, they had a guy named Danny too! ;)
-
-
how about the final TD, when shonn greene not only sealed the deal but let us rub their face in it a little bit? totally worth the 15 yard penalty
-
He waved goodbye to the crowd!
Ohhhhhh it was glorious!
-
>>He waved goodbye to the crowd!
>>Ohhhhhh it was glorious!
LOL – I didn’t realize thats what the wave was :-)
-
he didnt wave goodbye to the crowd …he put out the light switch and then went to sleep :)
-
You are probably right.
That makes it even better
-
-
-
That completely erased that 45-3 win they had on us.When the crowd was chanting “Overrated” about us in that game..it felt so great for Greene to rub it in their places and for the Jet players to dance around all over their field after they did the same to us.I’ll take a playoff win over a 45-3 loss anyday.
-
-
I Have a list of all the people who said we wouldn’t win on T.V. and personal friends……. This is a Glorious Occassion
-
For those of us who don’t live in NY, how about Colin Cowherd of ESPN radio? For WEEKS he had already written off the rest of the season and given the Super Bowl to the Pats.
Claiming that “the Pats were just on a different level compared to the rest of the league” that “They had the best coach in NFL History”, “A QB that was better than Joe Montana”…BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!
-
Super T—
Cowherd is a clown. He spends countless airtime minutes sucking on Brady’s teat.
Cowherd knows as little about the game of football as Francesa or Cimini or Florio or Lupica.
-
Usually I don’t mind him, but I had been listening to other things the last few weeks as I couldn’t take his Brady worshiping anymore.
He even went so far to make a huge argument on one recent show that Brady (3 SB wins) was a better QB than Joe Montana (4 SB wins) – because WHEN THE PATS WIN THE SB THIS YEAR, Brady will also have “4 SB wins” and he will get at least one more after that.
He better seriously humble himself this week.
-
Super T—
I don’t listen to Cowherd on radio, I watch him once in a while on TV, but it’s only because his co-host is so hot.
Don’t know how he is on radio, but on TV Cowherd’s always saying stupid things.
As for humbling himself, don’t count on it. Just like all the other Aholes who worship at the altar of Pretty Boy Brady, they’ll just make excuses for Hair Boy, even though he was one and done in the playoffs, both this year and last.
-
I was the same way. For the last week I just listened to music until Tierney got on at 1.
Clownherd is a front runner. He’ll be all about Aaron Rodgers now. We’ll see if he has the guts to man-up and eat his words.
-
Revis Air—
Yes, you got it exactly: Cowherd is going to be all over Rogers now, like a little dorky boy gawking at the pretty girl at the prom. He’ll be singing Rogers’ praises now, over and over and over again, which will be his own way of changing the subject and not owning up to just how wrong he was about Brady, the Pats, and the focking Jets!

Cimini, Lupica, Francesa, Florio—they’re all major aholes. Just like Pretty Boy Brady!
I said it yesterday before today’s game (as did Sackdance99): a Jets win against the Patriots would be the second biggest win in franchise history—and it is!
I also said (as did Zenlaw) that a win against the Pats today would mean more to me than winning—or even getting to—the SB. And, you know, it feels that way now.
God, I love Rex, I love this team, I love being a Jets fan!
Three of the four teams I picked to win this weekend (on a previous thread) won—and one of those teams is the friggin Jets!
Wooooooohooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
-
>>I said it yesterday before today’s game (as did Sackdance99): a Jets win against the Patriots would be the second biggest win in franchise history—and it is!
I think its a huge win, because it shows how good the Jets can be.
Question – do you think the Jets chances of beating the Steelers are better than their chances of beating the pats?
Had you asked me at the start of the day who I’d rather face, it would be anyone but the Pats.
Full credit to Rexs game plan, and the Jets.
Well done!-
Brandon—
“Question – do you think the Jets chances of beating the Steelers are better than their chances of beating the pats?”
I swear to you, right now I don’t give a crap—this is the biggest Jets win in OVER FORTY YEARS!!!!
-
+100000000
-
Yup, who cares! This was the second biggest win in franchise history – to go on the road and beat your biggest rival in the playoffs a month after they smoked you by 42. Unbelievable.
-
This string proves my theory last week. The SB will be the best thing ever…when we get there.
For now, this game was as good as a SB win. I’ve never been more proud to be a Jets fan.

Love the enthusiasm but I have to disagree with the more than a Super Bowl part. This was one more step towards the ultimate goal of respect.
-
MDGordon—
“Love the enthusiasm but I have to disagree with the more than a Super Bowl part.”
I didn’t say it was rational, or that is was a position you could reasonably debate. It’s a gut—the hatred of the Pretty Boy and the Pats runs that deep!
F you Brady! F you Welker! F you Patriots!
Top of the world, Ma!

This train is rolling. Get on or get out of the way.
-
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. This is one of the most satisfying victories in a long time. Not only do we get to shut up the Pats for the season, but we get the added pleasure of watching all the media hacks who said stupid things all week like “the Jets will have to find 43 points to win this game” (as if we’d start the effing game in a 42-point hole).
Rex, you are the man! I’d run through a wall for you, coach!
Thank you
-
“There’s a storm comin’ that the weatherman couldn’t predict…”
-
I love how the Jets celebrated and rub it in the cocky Patriots’ face. PURE brilliance right there. What really seal the deal in satisfaction was Shonn Greene resting, then Rex Ryan come running out and celebrating. Pittsburgh, we’re coming.
-
high fives all around..
2 straight afc championship games.. who’d think that would happen?
Let’s stomp the Steelers and take home the Lombardi!!!!!!!!
-
Rex Ryan is a genius. Has to be one of the best head coach in the game creating defensive schemes to beat Peyton-Brady back to back
-
Unbelievable game plan. His impact motivating players is unquestioned. And preparing for big games, the past 2 years? How do you explain it? Amazing.
-
-
This post is almost as good as the Jets played today…great recap Andrew.
-
Agreed, well done bro.
-
-
I need more Jet Football (used to be cowbell) just awesome
-
Keyshawn Johnson and Jane McManus were the only two I saw predicted a Jets win.
Wow is all I can say, and of course get ready for next week because as fun as this run is so far if they lose next week it is, as REX RYAN stated, same old jets, lose in the AFC Championship game every year.
The time is now, one more dragon to slay, one more domino to fall, one more cliche to overcome.
-
WOJF—
You’re right—nobody picked the Jets (well, I did on the Jane McManus thread)—and now I want to see those aholes eat major crap-laced crow!
Did you see Boomer E at half time—he was practically saying that the Pats had the Jets exactly where they wanted them, even though NE was down 14-3. Boomer kept harping on the way the Steelers came back against the Ravens, as if this proved that the Pats would come back against the Jets. He virtually predicted that the Pats would come back, and would score on the first possession of the second half. And this from a former Jets QB—he should be ashamed of himself!
-
Then after the game Boomer couldn’t stop praising Rex Ryan. They were in love with him after the game.
-
-
Actually, I know of one more man that predicted a JETs win today (even though I don’t want to admit it)
Herm Edwards
-
Big Bad Bob—
Yes, that’s right: Herm did predict a Jets victory, and should be given his due.
But the rest of the pundits, for the most part, were Aholes. Big time.

#corrections
In the paragraph describing the interception, you stated “But, then, suddenly David Harris streaked the other way picking off Sanchez and running it back to the Patriots ten.”
It should read, David Harris streaked the other way picking off Brady…
-
I was surprised when Harris picked off Sanchez. Didn’t see that coming at all.
-
LOL – you, I saw that type too
:-)Sanchez started off slow with his usually poor accuracy, but settled down.
Well done Sanchez!
-
-
Positives
-Sanchez settled down (after I was destroying him in my living room) and performed like a NFL quarterback should. Took care of business.-The WR play was superb. I apologize to Cotcher for my mid-season thoughts.
-Ellis played like a man possessed, never would have expected such an effort. WoW
-CB play was amazing. Coleman, I am not sorry for my past thoughts but I will admit that you playing in this game was a positive.
-Rex & Schotty
Negative
-slow start-Revis had no business playing soft coverage on Branch during that Pats TD drive.
-Poor tackling at various times
-Pool’s positioning when he’s the deep safety is poor.
-You have to fall on that Woodhead fumble, inexcusable.
Nobody gave us a shot, but we took care of business. It’s not over yet, but I will enjoy this for a couple days.. Go Jets
-
Marvel—
You write: ” It’s not over yet, but I will enjoy this for a couple days.”
I will enjoy this for the rest of my life—this is the second biggest win in franchise history, this is enormous, this is a watershed moment for this team! I am dancing in my brain, buddy, and the dance is going to go on and on and on and on!
-
Haha, I can’t disagree with your post. But I really want to be PIT (we all do). So I don’t want to make it seem like I’m satisfied with this being our last win. But trust me I will enjoy this W forever..
-
*beat PIT
-
-
On the money Ben. Second biggest win in Jet history. This win cannot be overstated. Keep hating haters.
-
Living in Boston and watching this game surrounded by Patriot fans…fans my roommate invited over because he was banking on celebrating a Pats win…amazing!!! It didn’t help the stress during the game, but the looks on their faces at the end while I’m jumping around was amazing.
-
starz—
Did you see the look in Brady’s eyes during the fourth quarter—that little-boy I’m-afraid-of-the-dark-and-I-might-cry look. It was like he could see that it was hopeless, and it was friggin priceless!
-
I still couldn’t believe they wasted 7 minutes on a drive they didn’t even score points on in the middle of the 4th quarter. I’m thinking, did the Patriots just drive the ball like the Jets should be doing?
-
starz—
I responded to this question of yours later on down the thread: the Pat ran the ball when they were down two scores in the middle of the fourth quarter—eating up seven minutes off the clock—because Rex was in their head, because Brady was spooked by our pass rush, and our DBs had all their receivers covered on almost every play. Running was the only way the Pats could move the ball, which played right into our hands.
-
Still amazing it had to come to that.
-
starz—
It came to that because our D was just that friggin good. And, yes, it is amazing!
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
The defense was amazing. That’s the best pass rush we’ve have all year, without blitzing.
But Folk has got to hit 30-yard field goals more than 50% of the time. We’re going to need them against Pittsburgh.
-
KenH—
You’re right, but right now I don’t give a crap—WE BEAT THE PATRIOTS IN THE PLAYOFFS! WE BEAT THE PATRIOTS IN THEIR OWN STADIUM! WE BEAT THE PATRIOTS WHEN NO ONE GAVE US ANY CHANCE OF BEATING THEM! And right now I’m friggin lovin it, man—I’m gonna love this win for the rest of my goddamn life!
-
+1000

Our pass-rush was definitely at its best today. It was exciting to watch. It has to be the veteran impact. Jason Taylor gets flack at times but I don’t we can question his desire and dedication. The guy wants it bad.
-
starz—
It was Ellis on the pass rush who was so phenomenal. He had two sacks, and I believe some hits or pressures as well.
-
Oh I know I wasn’t trying to diminish Ellis’ impact, I was just pointing out Jason Taylor has been contributing recently.

“O HAPPY DAY”
-
Same Old Jets. Back to back AFC Championship games.
Same Old Pats. Bounced in their first playoff game at home.
-
I love thats what Rex keeps saying. Changing the culture! And doing it too!
-
While we’re patting everyone on the back, let’s not forget about the architect of this team. The Big T. TDs by Braylon, Santonio and LT and let’s trade up for Greene and Sanchez. We had a terrible draft this year, no starters or steady contributors, but the trades and pick ups have been the difference between last year and this one. Mr. T, take a bow.
-
I’m not ready to call this years draft “terrible.” I still think Wilson will be a good corner (he’s looked better of late) and I like McKnight as the successor to LT.

-
man, with the way Smith was popping Wes you could almost say Welker put his foot in his mouth
-
LMFAO
-
I like that BB sat him for a while to send a classy message. Bill stuck Wes’ foot in his rear.
-
-
Super T that’s true he did say that, well now he will say Jets got lucky keep Hateing everyone we will just keep winning!
-
Rex the Savior!!!!!
-
be real…
it would have been tough to pick the jets outright with what the pats had shown lately, homefield, their performances off byes, etc.alot of people were on board with taking the 9, but even that shows what the common wisdom was across the country to get action on the jets.
and benigno doesnt deserve to be lumped in with those others. he took the pats on the straight jinx angle that he took the colts and wasnt going to do anything to change, even if it meant picking the seahawks over the jets in the superbowl. he’ll happily be picking the steelers trying to continue the run.
-
Agreed on the Benigno part, I LOVE Joe Benigno, hes the only radio guy, I go out of my way to listen too. Hes a JET, MET, Ranger and Knick fan like myself so he is saying what Im thinking usually despite the 38 year age difference between us.
I picked the jets to win 27-17 so even though the score was wrong, the outcome was right. JETS win, second biggest win in franchise history, BRING ON pittsburgh and to quote Bart Scott “CANT WAIT”
-
-
i loved the way we popped welker and he played almost the whole second half with half a patriot logo on his head because smitty blasted it off of him…
I LOVE IT!!!
-
Welker got hit hard 2 or 3 times this game! They were clean though and he deserved them.
-

Exactly 1 penalty. And they kept containment. That’s fantastic discipline, and it’s all due to Rex.
-
Sanchez was tremendous. I’m never doubting him or this team again.
-
Jets fan living in Pittsburgh for school.
1. I hate steelers fans so much. They’re infinitely worse than giants fans, patriots fans, or eagles fans combined.
2. They have all crowned the steelers AFC champs already just because Jets beat the Pats.
3. They wanted the Jets, they got them. Hope the Jets put up and shut them the hell up.-
and the pats wanted the jets too =)
-
Jets fan living in St Louis for school
There’s a Steelers fan on my floor. He’s from LA, roots for the Lakers (understandable), Yankees (wait, what?) and, once again, the Steelers (yeah). Can you say frontrunner? I’m looking forward to next week’s game in hopes that we shut him up
-
There are good and bad fans for every team, but to say that we’re worse than Philly and New Engerland is absurd. And what’s more absurd is for a NY fan to call ANYONE’S fans out.
That said, THANK YOU… The looks on Brady’s, Belli-Cheat’s, Welker’s etc.. faces was priceless. And the hit on Welker at the end had to be the cherry on top.
And yes, we did want you guys. We’d like another shot when we have Troy and Heath. And you won’t need to shut us up, we do our talking on the field.
-
-
@Ed L excatly but still no one has made an lol or something at my foot in mouth joke? c’me on man thats funny
-
We’re all scared Bart Scott might come after us man.
-
-
haha.. Ellis had to be the player of the game.. he was in the backfield more than Brady was today.
-
He looked beastly. Thats fantastic to watch too; couldn’t happen to a more deserving Jet player.
-
-
Tonight is a good night to be a Jets fan. What a great game.
Sanchez settled in after a rough first quarter and really contributed positively to the team. I hope he continues the way he played the last 3 quarters of tonights game next Sunday.
Keys and thoughts for the Pittsburgh game:
-Pittsburgh has a better defense than the Pats but their offense is not as potent. The last game we dropped 7 and 8 into coverage. It worked. However, it must be mentioned that their offensive line has holes. I believe a similar defensive game plan to the one we had tonight would be successful against the Steelers.
-Hopefully, Brad Smith will be back and fully operational for us on Sunday. The wild cat will be bug for us next week, because our running game might not be as successful as it was this week.
-Sanchez is going to have to make bigger plays for us next week than this week. Let’s hope the momentum he gained tonight carries over to next week.-
Agree on Smith, but what about Kick Returns? Cromarties looks great out there and has been getting to the 40 repeatedly with that potential for more every time. I don’t want LT running the wildcat though.
-
Didn’t Smith lead the league in KO avg??? And, maybe you didn’t notice, but Cromartie was catching most of those KOs around the 20yd line.

THANK YOU! PLease email me if you would like me to join your convey to Pitt (from Long Island)….

Anyone with a picture of Braylon’s flip or Braylon’s suit in the post game interview?
-
GOD, I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!!!
-
best recap ever.
-
You know how when the Jets lose a game there are so many negative comments here. Well I was just looking through the messages on the Boston Herald site, and here’s what a PATS fan is saying about one of the half dozen greatest QBs of all time…..it just made me chuckle….
“Here we go. My sixth annual review of the “golden boy”
’06 all of Denver’s points were from Brady turnovers
’07 a Brady turnover late in the 4th qtr sent the Colts to SB 41
’08 SB 42 – enough said
’10 Brady won the game in the 1st qtr for the RAVENS
’11 Mr. MVP decided that a PLAYOFF game was the time to end his no interception streak
Maybe BB should draft another QB. This one’s washed up.”-
Snack—
“Maybe BB should draft another QB. This one’s washed up.”
LOL!
Maybe we should start calling Pretty Boy Brady Mr-One-and-Done!
-
Most fans have the attention span of a gnat.
-
kdbart—
Yeah, but I just LOVE it when Pats fans are rolling around on the ground and crying their little eyes out!
-
-
-
Eric Smith was huge. Seemed like every opportunity he got, he was laying a big hit on someone, or making an open field tackle, or doing something else clutch to help the Jets win. Seemed fitting to me that he recovered the decisive onside kick.
Also, Cromartie in the return game = revelation.
What a game. I live and work in Boston. After a week (make that a season… actually, make that several seasons) of getting it from all angles, tomorrow is gonna be a GREAT day in the office.
-
I’m in pitt and i’m dreading this coming week, but hopeful about the subsequent week
-
Smith has to start next year over Leonhard.
-
Are you kidding me??? Leonhard is the heart & soul of the Jets defense.
-
-
He popped Welker twice real hard. Loved it.
-
-
Marshall Faulk also predicted a Jets victory. Lets go all the way just one game at a time. I knew the Jets would have a go chance to go far and win it all. The reason is we have excellent talent and in the playoffs you need to be able to take it to the next level. GO JETS!!
-
All this, Rex’s game plan. He was playing a SEASON, not a f ing game. He set up the Pats, and they bit. He’s playing for the superbowl and it will be J E T S
-
Wilbon on Friday’s PTI predicted a Jet win.
-
Wheres the guy that predicted a pats win before the game in the gameday thread. Oh, I predicted a jets win over the Steelers, then to lose to the bears, I know everything.
-
-
Phenomenal win!!
Steelers are tough,BUT they are not as hungry for Superbowl as JETS. Not as an organization, coaches, or as players. They have SB rings. the Jets want it more, thats gonna make the difference next week.
-
One thing that seems to be going unnoticed however in all of this elation:
Nick Folk’s missed 30 yard field goal.
Unacceptable. We put him in the best possible scenario. And he misses? He can’t hit distant field goals, and then he botches up a 30 yard field goal? Yes, it’s 1 field goal. But how would you have felt if the Jets had lost due to that 1 field goal?
Problem needs to be addressed immediately.
-
The punting was terrible too. Weatherford is usually better. Westhoff’s gonna keep them busy this week.
-
Yeah I gotta give Weatherford a pass because he’s been great most of the year. I think he figures it out.
Nick Folk on the other hand is alarming. Doug Brien-alarming.
-
We can give Weatherford a pass.
What is the nfl record for most punts inside 20 for a season?
Steve Weatherford of the New York Jets had 42 punts inside the 20 in the 2010-11 season.

Replay showed that it might have actually been good. Still, he should have made that!
-
-
Hey Bill Cower, guess it must be cold in hell huh? You gave the Jets a snowballs chance in hell. Yeah, from a coach who won 1 SB in 15 years. LOL
-
Cowher—- What a classless act! Eat your prediction on today’s game. I will be in Pittsburgh to see gangreen walk on the terrible towel.
-
LOL… Please, walk all over the Towel:
The Terrible Curse refers to a sports superstition that holds that desecration of the Terrible Towel causes misfortune to befall the offending team. The Terrible Curse is a relatively new phenomenon, as the curse has only been noted recently.
The curse has appeared on several occasions in recent years. In 2005, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh shined his shoes with a Terrible Towel during a regular-season game between the Bengals and Steelers. The Bengals went on to lose to the Steelers in the first round of the playoffs. The Bengals let go of T.J. Houshmanzadeh before the 2009 season. Once they played the Steelers again, they were able to beat the Steelers without Houshmanzadeh.[1] The Curse followed Houshmandzadeh to Baltimore, where he dropped a fourth down pass to end the Ravens’ season in the 2011 divisional playoff against the Steelers.
The curse allegedly appeared twice during the 2008 NFL playoffs. During the Baltimore Ravens’ 13-10 win over the Tennessee Titans, Titans running back LenDale White fumbled in the red zone and cost his team a field goal opportunity that ultimately proved to be the difference in the game. White had stomped and spat on a Terrible Towel a few weeks earlier, at the end of the Titans’ regular-season win against the Steelers.[2] The Tennessee Titans went on an eight-game losing streak immediately following the incident, including losing to the Steelers in the NFL Kickoff game after the Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII. In November 2009, the offending players sent an autographed towel to the Allegheny Valley School, a special needs school supported by Towel creator and long-time Steelers broadcaster Myron Cope, with a written request to “lift the curse”. [3]
The curse allegedly showed up again in Super Bowl XLIII. During a Super Bowl pep rally Phoenix mayor Phil Gordon blew his nose into a Terrible Towel and threw it on the ground. The Cardinals’ mascot wiped its armpits with the towel. Although Gordon later apologized, the Cardinals lost the Super Bowl.[4]
Several Blue and White “Terrific Towels” were made for the Indianapolis Colts’ in the 2009 season playoffs, one of which received some airtime during their AFC championship victory.[5] The Colts subsequently lost Super Bowl XLIV to the New Orleans Saints.

I got a huge laugh out of this just now.
-
“Sanchez is just not ready for the real-life drama that awaits him Sunday in Foxboro.”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa
-
“Maybe in the movies the nice-guy quarterback can go on the road and be a hero and beat the best team in football. This ain’t a movie.”
“This is football. This is Foxboro. No one said it would be fair.”
XD
-
-
That article is much funnier now than it was when I read it earlier in the week.
-
Yeah, it looks like the cameras are still rolling to me. Gives me more reason to want the Jets to win it all. Sanchez can hold up the Lombardi trophy and say, “This is for you, Aiden!” And then, hold up his middle finger, and say, “This is for you, Gerry Callahan!”
And, maybe they will make it into a Broadway play, so Brady can see it.
-
-
Doesn’t anyone know what Brady was snorting out of the Gatorade cup before the game? I thought that was really odd.
-
Probably smelling salts. Not that uncommon.
-
smelling salt? Players often are clearing their noses so they can improve their breathing. I was more interested in the gray liquid he was drinking.
-
-
No one did any real analysis of the last Jets/Pats game. They had just lost the fulcrum of their defense days before, AND the coaches were incredibly tight. The missed long field goal and the subsequent shanked punt gave Brady a short field and put the Jets in a hole early, making them rely on Sanchez too much. The game just spiraled out of control.
The Jets were far more disciplined and focused this time.
-
You are the first person who said what I have been saying for weeks.
Thank you
-
Just to clear things up, i stated that JL loss at the time in the week when it happened will be big.
-
Buyaha—
You write: “Just to clear things up, i stated that JL [Jim Leonhard] loss at the time in the week when it happened will be big.”
Yeah, so did I, and in detail, in thread after thread on this site.
I even had a long debate with Bent about it.
Leonhard was the QB of our DBs. And there was no one on the team, I said, who could step in and take over that role from him, especially so close to game day in Foxboro.
But the loss that week to the Pats wasn’t just the result of losing Leonhard. The offense, for instance, stunk it up big time, and the loss of JL had nothing to do with that. The Jets played like crap in every way imaginable that day.
Which is why everyone and his mother picked the Pats against us this third time around.
Which is also one of the many many reasons why this playoff win against NE is just so deliriously SWEET—the second biggest win in the history of the franchise!
-
-
-
So happy, I was on the edge of my seat but so confident the second half….let’s take it to banged up Pittsburgh..
-
I was reliving the Giants SB win by shouting: “Its not over yet! Brady’s still got time!” Jets held on for a tremendous win. We’ve already beaten Pitt. We can do it again. Take out squirrel-head and minimize Ward. We’ll be SuperBowl bound!
-
You did it when we didn’t have Troy. The single most dangerous defensive player in the game. Looking forward to the rematch. Oh, Heath Miller isn’t too bad either. We’ll have him this time too.
-
-
Yeah, I thought if we were within 1 score at halftime (who knew we’d be up 2 scores) that we could put pressure on their young defense and restless crowd and take control of the 2nd half like we’ve done so successfully the past 2 years in big games.
-
-
Salute to my jets!!!!
-
you no I like the steelers the play football the way you should, having said that I would like to beat them for the following reasons:
1. the constaint targeting of Ed Reed during last week by Ward and that lineman
2. Ike Taylor pulling that whole helment stuff with T.J. I have a really hard last name-ata
3. the refs. being clearly bist for them last week
4. if we beat them we are in the SUPERBOWL -
Shaun Ellis and Jerricho Cotchery do it again.
-
jets put an end to shady brady and bill billacheat…..sucks when u dont have the fil to watch the other teams plays huh?? brady can stick it! billacheat can go jump off a bridge!! and the pats can all sit around the camp fire this weekend singing kumbaya while holding hands!!!
-
Marshall Faulk picked the Jets. Always knew I liked him.
-
Marshall and Sapp were the main two with Confidence in us. I cant believe actually read somewhere that we were going to lose because The Pats “Want It More”. Really? There is no one in the NFL that wants this more than the JETS.
-
-
That picture is Epic. Cotch, Braylon and Tone. Al three came up huge and showed everyone why we are a force when we have to be.
How about Shonn Greene Putting it away and LT starting us off? Then Big Kat with Sacks while we were rushing 3? If our Offense and Defense Keeps this up SUPERBOWL!!! -
How about this Cimini Tweet:
Santonio Holmes walking to locker room yells: “Business is done!” Brandon Moore to me: “Not a chance, huh?” I eat crow. #Jets
-
Maybe brady shouldve been watching the Jets-colts game instead of watching broadway shows
-
+ 1000

Does anyone know why the Patriots were running the ball in the middle of the 4th quarter eating up over 6 minutes of clock, down two scores? I don’t think they even scored on that drive, didn’t they turn it over on downs.
-
starz—
Yes, that’s right. They held the ball for something like seven minutes, and didn’t score!
Why, you may ask.
Well, maybe it was because Rex got into their heads. Because Brady was spooked by our pass rush. Because our DBs were covering everybody on almost every play.
But I like to think it’s because the Pats friggin suck!
-
-
@Matt which is why he needs to get into the hall of fame with Curtis” he’s the best around, nothing is never gonna bring him down” Martin. p.s. J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS
-
Love the Maginot Line reference.
-
and some pats fans saying that today was almost worse than SB 42
-
Thanks. That’s delicious.
-
-
BTW what happened to the pat fans that usually troll on here, have not seen or heard a word from them, when they said the Jets had no chance, must taste nice eating your words, now go post on whatever website they have for recovering bloated chowder heads
-
Trevor Pryce on Tom Brady: “I could see some of the horror in his eyes when nobody was open.”
-
hahahaha….i believe it. it showed. it was amazing. we just rattled the two best QBS of the modern era.
-
belvey & starz—
Yeah, I said that earlier on this thread: that you could see that lost-little-boy look in Brady’s eyes during the fourth quarter.
God I loved seeing that.
-
-
-
Where is that Patriot fan who was posting here last week? Bring on the Steelers cuz we beat them before and we will do it again!!!!! GO JETS JETS JETS
-
Biggest JETS win after SB69. Just like the 45-3 loss was the biggest Jets game of the season, this one is going to resonate for a long time in NEP-NYJ rivalry. This will put a scare in their minds for the next couple of seasons. This is the change of guard in AFC East.
Biggest JETS win after SB69 no matter what happens in Pitt. -
NFL Networks Marshall Faulk also predicted the Jets win
-
how sweeeet it is…….nothing better than shutting up all the haters….reggie jackson, bill cowher, tony dungy, trent dilfer, mike fatcessa, michael kay………they can all suck it
-
What a great win. I’ll enjoy this one for quite a while.
-
Love it when the Jets win. Love it even more when ALL the pundits are wrong. – Great win!
Can’t wait ti hear what Fat Man Mike, who knows it all, has to say tonight. – Let’s serve up a 50 lb slice of humble pie and see if he eats it.
-
Mike doesn’t do humble.
-
-
I think Brady wanted to get back to Giselle and I don’t blame him. We wanted it more today on all sides. Re-sign Braylon. He is a Jet.
-
Same ol’ Jets huh? Way to unanimously select the Patriots by the
CBS sports crew! Oops. Go Jets! -
Can’t wait to hear Mr Know it all Mike Francesa talk his way out of this Jets win! Plus I’m sure mr miked up will talk about the Bears, the Packers,Brady, Manning, and Tom Coughlin for most of the show, and then talking about 5 minutes on the Jets win!
-
So great to see two longtime Jets — Shaun Ellis and Jerricho Cotchery — turn in such clutch games.
Again, Braylon = $$$.
And Santonio, too, but everyone knows that.
TWO MORE TO GO!!
-
yeah, i hope we can find a way to keep both of them. They’re both in their prime and are proving to be clutch (Holmes kinda already has). Sanchez growing with 2 elite WRs and another very good underrated one in Cotch would do wonders for the future of this offense.
-
I disagree. I think for Sanchez’s growth it is important to keep one and let another one go. Id rather keep Braylon. Not having enough balls to pass along in a run dominant team can be bad for the young QB.
-
Your off on that, Bray is tougher(today’s TD) Holmes get the quicks must get balls and the not a chance TDs. We will need Holmes more , until Sanchez learn to let plays develop.
-
-
-
REX/SANCHEZ 2 championships in 1st 2 years — has it ever been done before?
-
conference championship games
-
-
I just want to say I’m sick of hearing about how great Joe Flacco and Matty Ice are from the same geniuses who constantly question Sanchez.
-
Damn right. Great point. They were both horrible this weekend. Sanchez already has as many playoff wins as both of them, combined. (Flacco has 4, Ryan 0).
-
+1
-
-
Now the question is after such a big win and in some eyes an upset, what are the expectations for next week? It’s hard to say anyone thought we could get this far just a month ago and while I really really hope we can pull it off next week, and I believe have proved we can, if we play hard and go down next week we still gotta be proud of what we are building here.
-
Are you a Jet fan? With no injuries, we have the best team in the league.
-
-
would like to know what belicheat told rex after the game.rex was asked and he said he is not sharing it. I think he told him go win one for the jets organization.
-
He asked Rex for a job. ;)
-
-
……Wow.
I mean, wow. I’ve sobered up from the absolute insane asylum that was MJ Armstrong’s in Gramercy. I was so nervous before kickoff, that the pregame Jameson “no matter what we’re still friends” shot with my Pats buddy almost sent me over the edge.
I’ll admit, I never stopped waiting for the Tom Brady “hey, remember I’ve won 3 rings” drive. But instead, I saw the Mark Sanchez “hey, everyone thought I’d lose this game” drives. He is so obviously hurt, and I’m so proud of how he’s learning to cope with it. I’m so proud of the O-line, who kept chipping away at that Pats defense and eventually cracked the hull.
Can we all join hands across America to show we’re united in bringing both Holmes and Braylon back? My GOD. Talk about prime-time players. We got them for this game, for those plays. We got LT and Greene to grind out the clock.
And my MVP of the game, a guy we all adore, Shaun Ellis. I’ve been watching him since his first play for the Jets. That was the best game he has ever played, given the circumstances. Maybe Rex had an inkling, maybe it was luck, but Ellis played like he was in his prime and led a courageous and prideful effort from the defense.
Go Jets. No one thought we’d make it this far, one more game boys…then anything is possible.
-
By the Sanchez drives comment I meant he stuck to all those people that thought he would lose it.
-
Don’t forget Smith and Cro, and obviously the Island.
-
And Cotchery! My God, in Rex’s own words, a “herculean effort”.
-
True team effort, most complete game of the year. Hell, maybe of this decade!!!!
-
-
-
-
Looks like everything in my Jets Rap came true:
-
Still feeling an all time high in confidence after this game. This will literally be the hardest road ever to a Superbowl, if we can get past Big Ben and Pitt. But we matchup nicely against them, so I am confident. Our D will need to step it up, and make Ben uncomfortable!
http://fanaticvice.com/jets-hand-patriots-agonizing-de-feet/
-
That’s my new background… so epic.
-
Hey jameson
Your coach had a bad game- he got outcoached- fake punt, 7 minute drive of runs in the 4th qtr with no score ?. Your QB looked scared
Shut your pieholeKING KONG AIN’T GOT NOTHIN’ ON ME!!!
-
Great win! Great team effort. eric Smith deserves the game ball. But I dont get Tannenbaum – the game is called FOOT – ball…can we really expect to win it all with arguably the two worst kickers in the leauge??
-
Truly one of the most satisfying victories the Jets have had since I’ve been a fan! It will be our 4th trip to the AFC championship game and I have a really good feeling that it is finally our time. Me and the boys are making the trip to Pittsburgh ………..from Hard Knocks to the Super Bowl. Wow what a season for the ages. Enjoy it Jets fans……our time has finally come Go Jets!!!
-
Loved the celebration at the end and best of all deon branch called it classless
-
Just some thoughts that make this win so satisfying:
The advantage gained through SpyGate is becoming more evident:
1) It’s obvious Belicheat and Brady can’t win SB’s when they don’t know what your defensive calls are.
2) If there weren’t any advantage, Josh and his crew wouldn’t have taken it to Denver
3) Pats are paying a heavy price: best record in FB for 2 years after SpyGate and no SB wins; 11-5 record one year, no play-offs
4) Would they trade those “cheated SB wins” for legitimate ones after SpyGate?
5) Would Brady have developed that quickly if he didn’t have an advantage? He didn’t pay the price like other QB’s (Mannings, Flacco, Rodgers, Big Ben, Sanchez, etc). They did it the old fashioned way: they earned it.
6) Brady has a lot more time now to watch Lombardi, again. He didn’t think he needed to study to beat us. (No respect. Most players would be watching their next potential opponent) -
just saw some of the highlights. brady’s face after green’s td is freaking priceless.
i f’n love this jets team so much!
-
I did not get to watch the game thhis evening, but am catching up now. As someone who vividly remembers watching Super Bowl III and being amazed at the outcome, this IS without a doubt the second greatest victory in Jets history.
Side note – I was watching some of the replay vidoes on my PC, and when Shonne scored that last touchdown I was struck by how bored, maybe disappointed, Jim Nantz sounded on the call. Maybe it was already remarked upon here. Anybody else notice that? Where’s Gus Johnson when you need him?
-
Thats probably bc Nance is an ex Patriot.
-
-
I really need to go to sleep, but I’m so psyched. Watching Chris Berman’s wrap-up, yet again. This is fun.
Thank you Keyshawn for having our backs and picking the Jets to win.
-
Clearly if the Jets go on to win the Superbowl..REX RYAN may go down as being the Greatest Sports figure in New York.He would be right up there with Namath and Ruth, etc..
Any coach who talks as much as Ryan and backs it up with wins, deserves it.I can almost guarantee you that if Rex Ryan wins the Superbowl, his brother Rob will become a head coach someday because some other team will want to model what Rex Ryan has done with this Franchise.
-
Side note..Braylon Edwards is an absolute Beast in the playoffs. He always comes up with a big play and it seems most of the guys who stepped up for us in the playoffs are doing it again this time around.Greene and Edwards have been outstanding.
-
How awesome is this win & having Dennis Byrd give a speech to the team! What a great season so far & hopefully we can put the cherry on top and win it all! Were all the Rex naysayers now? Who cares if he likes feet, i love Rex and his bravado..FFF all the haters!! Green & White baby!!
Pitt up next
Go Jets -
Cloud *****NG Nine!
-
We still need two more. This one feels great for all the crap people were talking after 45-3. Stay focused. Beat Pittsburgh than like the Guns and Roses song “anything goes tonight”!!!!
-
Great win still can’t believe it. For all the talking Rex does when at the podium he was asked what Belichick said and he basically said none of your business. I was shocked when I saw Belichick shake hands and actually speak to Rex.
-
http://www.patsfans.com/new-england-patriots/messageboard/10/712308-who-did-jets-pick-2000-a.html
I’m going to sleep good tonight.
-
sme old jets aint out the door till we win superbowl..but a step closer
-
Every player played “Like A Jet” tonight! They talked the talk, and walked the walk. Meanwhile, I saw Wes Welker on ESPN with his FOOT in his mouth. LOL
Everyone says how the Jets are always ‘trash talking’. But, this was actually the first game all season that any of the players said anything. And, I don’t consider what Rex says as ‘trash talk’. He doesn’t say anything negative about the other team. He just says his team is better. Which his just his way of inspiring his players. The jets talked trash this week because of what the ‘Perfect’ Pats did in the 45-3 game. They were the ones talking crap and mocking the Jets. But, of course, the media never mentioned that, because the Pats are such good little boys! I’m tired of hearing how Belichick is the best coach of all time, and Brady is the best QB. They haven’t won a playoff game since they got caught filming other teams’ practices.
Rex clearly outcoached Belichick this game. And, I’ve always said, if you hit Brady a few times, he gets scared and rushes his throws. You look at just about every game they lost, thats what happened. He’s an overrated little baby. The same with Belichick. In close games, he always does something stupid. Remember the Colts game last year? I loved that!
Now, The Jets have to beat the REAL ‘Best team of the decade’, the Steelers. We did in week 15, we can do it again.
J-E-T-S! JETS JETS JETS!! -
I agree Jr. That was the biggest shock of the game.
-
Great damn post Andrew. Well written and appropriately looking a nod toward the ultimate goal.
-
I am so proud to be a Jets fan. Not because we won, because every f**king NFL pundit said we couldn’t or wouldn’t. Only Jet fans knew better. I am so ready to play Pittsburgh! Go Jets!
-
WATCH ON 1ST AND TEN…. SKIP BAIL-LESS WILL SAY HOW THE PATS “LOST” THE GAME AND HOW THE JETS “DIDNT WIN IT”
-
Skip is right more times than not. But not Last night :) as his pick the Pats got Manhandled by the as Skip calls them “the notyets”. NOW he’ll call them The JETS
-
-
Very dangerous having an excessive celebration penalty handing the Patriots 15 yards then letting Brady drive down the field in under a minute. It’s not over til it’s over. You can’t give away yards on stupid penalties like that and then go to sleep because you’re up 14, not against Brady.
-
Not with 24 seconds left, and not with Brady as scared as he was. By the look on his face in the 2nd half, he didn’t even want the ball in his hands.
-
-
Sorry for being so negative. It was a great win besides that. The defense was amazing. Sanchez played great. Glad to see him comfortable.
-
Two awesome things happened yesterday:
Good triumphed over Evil WTG JETS!!!!!!!
Jay Glazer exposed the Patriots tripping a player with their wall on the sideline.
Best Sunday ever…so far.
Great write up Andrew.
-
What a great defensive game plan. Holding back on the constant blitzing and covering everyone like glue. Brady was confused, and showed it. Sanchez stepped up again. Great win! I agree, beating the Pats in the playoffs is as good as a SB to me. Everything else is icing….
-
What am I saying? Super Bowl!
-
where is “patsfan” today?
-
The victory yesterday was SWEET, second best win in Franchise history.
Today, listening to EVERYONE that picked against us try to tip toe around the fact they were wrong has been AWESOME

PREACH!
