With the news that the Jets front office and players are going to have some hard decisions ahead of them in terms of personnel. We wanted to look at the team’s most veteran players, and look into the crystal ball for 2011.
Mark Brunell (18 years) – Mark Brunell might like to stay, but the Jets might feel like at this point they can move forward without him. Brunell would only play in 2010 with the knowledge that he’d be the #2 on this team, and the Jets acquiesced to that stated desire to get his stability and influence for 2010. With that now in hand, they might want to utilize the roster spot more effectively (get younger) and use the spot as an insurance for Sanchez, or development / trade in the future. Kevin O’Connell might be in the hunt for that second spot again this year, but unless Brunell accepts a demotion, he might not be a Jet again.
Tony Richardson (16 years) – Richardson will be a free agent, and was dropped right at the start of the season before getting picked up again and helping the Jets on their season long run. Richardson was the heart and soul of this team, and could be sorely missed, but the Jets drafted John Conner for a reason, and Richardson might have a tough time battling him off for a roster spot again in 2011 if there were to even sign him to begin with.
Trevor Pryce (14 years) – Pryce was scooped up from the Ravens during the course of the season, and provided a big help to the Jets defensive line with the absence of Kris Jenkins and Ropati Pitoitua. Pryce is now a free agent, and will be a tough call for the Jets, who should be looking to get younger on their defensive front. The Jets might well try and keep Pryce on the team, or make a gentlemen’s agreement with him that if he gets an offer, that they’ll match/beat it. For now though, the Jets might let him dangle a bit.
Jason Taylor (14 years) – Taylor last night sure sounded like a man who is ready to announce his retirement. During his press conference, he struggled to keep back tears, but it’s hard to be so close and end on such a sour note. Taylor called it the “worst loss of his career” … maybe he’s not willing to go through it all over again. The team still has his rights for 2011 … so we’ll see what he winds up doing.
Shaun Ellis (11 years) – The Jets are going to have a very hard decision to make when it comes to what to do with Shaun Ellis. Ellis has been frank about his frustration at not getting a new deal, and now he’s becoming a free agent. The Jets made it clear they would not extend him, and also even tried to trade him this past offseason. Will the Jets be able to put an offer in front of Ellis that he’ll take? Hard to say right now, but I think it’s a 50/50 shot at best.
LaDainian Tomlinson (10 years) – Tomlinson has already stated he’ll honor his second year of his deal. He still has unfinished business in getting that ring and knows the Jets are his only and best shot. Even so, based on his statistics from last night, the Jets are going to have to work a third back into the rotation that can catch the ball and run more dynamically to complement Greene’s power style to effectively “double” the sort of output that LT can create. This is your year Joe McKnight!

What happened to Weatherford? He punted at a pro Bowl level in the regular season, and then turned around and was consistently awful in the playoffs.
I’d keep him to see if he can regain form next season, but have him on a short leash.
-
Of the people named I think only LT will be back next season, and that’s not a lock.
-
-
JennyVrentas
Nick Folk said Ryan’s talk with team addressed fact that many players may not be back next year. Plane ride was very quiet, he said.
-
Rex and Mike… We need an upgrade in three positions… Get Younger and Better at:
Defensive End
Free Safety
Outside Line BackerShaun Ellis and LaDainian Tomlinson should be KEPT out of the above Group of Players.
Rex… time to forget about brining in any more old Ravens! Those guys are done!
-
Bart Scott was very disappointing and David Harris was horrible yesterday, I would consider drafting an inside linebacker.
Trevor Pryce played much better than I expected and if he will return I have no problem with that.
Sean Ellis wants to paid, let someone else do it with all due respect. If he takes a discount I would allow him to return.
No one talks about Pace, but lets face it he has been a big disappointment.
Weird, with a top rated defense like this there could be a LOT of turnover.
Leonhard, Pouha, Devito, and Revis are the only locks to return. REX will never get rid of Scott, but I would.
-
-
Heard Ellis is gone too
-
What about Nick Folk? What are the special teams going to do when they realize that they have to run ALL the way down the field to make tackles on kickoffs rather than to the 30 yard line?
I’d like to see them make offers to all those guys with the exception of Taylor (he did ok this year but I think that’s it for him), with the Jets going hardest to retain Ellis. This is going to be tough. Ellis will demand a lot of money but the Jets also have a lot of needs and starting 3-4 DEs don’t grow on trees in the draft. I am not so worried about losing locker room leadership this offseason. I thought that the Jets made mistakes in that area last year, getting rid of Leon, TJ, and Faneca, but thanks to guys like Sanchez and Mangold they hardly missed a beat.
-
I agree completely. I think the need for strong leaders is diminished with Sanchez being in his 3rd year. He really seems to be a leader, which is great.
-
-
New kicker, punter, lets take a look at a decent veteran backup QB. Most importantly, lets go get a GD snack!
-
I’m not over it bad day at work. tomorrow sick day for me. I want to be the new OC for the jets….
-
Sorry, my seven-year-old daughter already applied for the job.
-
-
Shaun Ellis needs to stya here
-
no doubt
-
absolutely
-
absoltulely NOT if he wants big money, which he does. He is pissed that they did not give him a new deal, so i suspect he is a goner.
-
I hope the Jets can find a way to keep Ellis only because he is the longest-tenured Jet, and with the way the Jets have been playing, they will probably be right back in the hunt next season.

I would even entertain the idea of trading Pace.. Long off-season, should be interesting..-
This is ridiculous. I respect your opinion but this is out of control. How can you get rid of all those guys?
-
Thomas HArstock and Smith will be back, the others could all very well be gone.
Perhaps Woody moves to guard or sticks around at a redcued rate as a back up, but Ducasse should move in as starting RT.
The other guys are all logical subtractions.
-
Thomas counts 3.8 mm to cap and harstock 1.8mm. Both will be gone.

Why cant hunter be woodys replacment he seems to be doing a good job

They didn’t trust him enough to run behind him on Sunday. That’s pretty telling.

Brunnell- Gone
Tony Richardson- Gone
Trevor Pryce (14 years) – Here for one more year. My reasoning is simply Rex Ryan’s love for him, and also Ryan’s coaching style of mixing veterans with rookies to help develop the rookies, i.e. Brunell, Richardson, LT, Mangold, etc. He always has the veterans coach up the rookies, and the gets rid of the veterans once they have done that to make room for new bodies. All that said, we are gonna have alot of defensive front rookies.
Jason Taylor (14 years) – I want him gone, but I feel like he will be back.
Shaun Ellis (11 years) – Gone, we wil ldraft to replace him and as good as he did in the post season for us, long-term it is not worth it.
LaDainian Tomlinson (10 years) – One more year, he is not done coaching up Greene or in my opinion more importantly McKnight as he is heir apparent to the spot.
-
with a better pass rush i bet our safetys will perform alot better
-
Taylor didn’t make the hoped for impact in his role and is likely done. Ellis, though a great alll-time Jet, is showing the wear and tear and should only be kept as a part time player at a reasonable deal. We’ll see what kind of offers he gets. Same goes for Pryce. Gholston will be gone, Jenkins can’t stay on the field and Devito and Pouha are solid, though hardly dominant. Same goes for Bryan Thomas and Calvin Pace. They need at least one disruptive game-changer up front. Who doesn’t, though? the Jets will have their work cut out for them trying to upgrade the front 7.
Tough call on L.T., but I would let him go and hope McKnight can become the shifty speedster to compliment Greene. I also feel like L.T.’s presence made it harder to give Greene enough carries. Richardson’s locker room presence notwithstanding, the team went with more 2TE run sets and relied less on FB’s, so it’s a good place to cut salary.
Against conventional wisdom, I’d keep Edwards over Holmes. As good as Holmes can be, I just think that kind of shifty speed might be easier to find than another truly talented receiver with Braylon’s size and athleticism. Think he’s a better safety blanket for Sanchez’s continued development.
-
I would keep neither holmes nor edwards unless they give a big home town discount, which i doubt.
Would spend the money elsewhere, dont trust either of these guys once they get there money.
If i HAD to keep one it would be Edwards.
-
-
pass rush has to be the first concern, either a DE or OLB… but what are the chances we sign Cro to a long-term deal? or do u think we wait a year or two and hope kyle wilson develops?
-
i think Cro needs to go. Kyle Wilson deserves a chance to start and see what he can do. normally teams draft 1st round picks to start immediately. if we keep bringing in big named FA corners to play starting roles, Wilson will never get his shot and we will look at him as a bust..but for now he needs to get a chance.
-
-
We need Holmes for our Red Zone offense though. Edwards can muuscle in a long ball, but without Holmes Edwards gets doubled and nobody catches the tiptoe ball in the corner.
-
And without Braylon, Holmes gets doubled. You need them both.
-
Would certainly keep them both, if possible. Just don’t know that it is. Tough call.
-
This is true, but I think Holmes is more able to run past his corner, and cut under a safety then Edwards is. There is no question we want both of them, but Edwards has not shown the consistency that Holmes has through the whole season. Edwards decided to turn on the “jets” at the very end of the season almost like he was observant of finishing strong for a contract or something…
Holmes is a champion, Edwards is an athlete.
-
I felt Edwards was more consistent. I think he’s one of the more underrated/appreciated guys on the team. He must have only had one or two drops all year (haven’t looked up the stats, but i’m sure it must have been less than holmes), he’s a big target, a good deep threat, and does a very solid job in the run blocking game. I really hope he’s on the team next season
-
Edwards was far less consistent. He was much more of a boom-or-bust receiver. He finished strong, so that gives the perception that he was consistent, but he definitely wasn’t (partly because of Sanchez)
-
I was unclear. I just meant consistent in terms of his hands, which obviously doesn’t reflect the full picture. Holmes was more productive, which as you said was partly due to Sanchez. Still, i don’t thinks it’s fair to say he was FAR less consistent.
-
-
The Steelers replaced Holmes with a 3rd rounder and are headed to the SB. Edwards might create more matchup problems. Again, I think they both have great value and would love to keep them both.

its funny that i dont here the real person that should be gone this year and that is shotty. we should have been in no huddle midway through the third quarter.we would have saved at least 5 min…….goal line he desided to pass on third and run on fourth…in my opinion if you deside to pass on third your passing on fourth. im so pissed with this loss. i want shotty’s head by wednesday.
-
I agree Shotty needs to go, but got a gut feeling he will unfortunately still be around. But he is either good or bad and usually bad at important moments. Greene should have ran on 4th down at least since he is the power back, but the 3rd down pass call was bad, maybe a good idea to throw but wrong play to call. Another thing is we run the wildcat all year long and don’t do it in this game, bet if we ran it with smith throwing it, we would have caught them off guard.
-
This is something I was looking for all game. I thought for sure at some point I would finally see the Wildcat come out and for once I would get to see Brad Smith throw it, but it never came sadly. This leads me to believe they saved it for the Super Bowl (unlikely) or it never works in practice. Which is sad because either way we won’t know unless we see it in the Super Bowl next year, or it comes up in a press conference, Lisa help us please?
-
-
im with you sack. i want his head today!!!!

JennyVrentas
Rex said he would love to have Holmes + Edwards back, just not sure how “feasible” it would be.
-
I also hate to say it, but besides when he lined up against a maybe not so great afterall Moss, when has Cromartie played any better than Wilson? If you ask me we would not be any worse off with Wilson developing as a corner as he might let more passes through, but he at least would nt be clearly hold-raping his reciever every other play.
-
JennyVrentas Rex said Schottenheimer will absolutely be back. Expects several assistants to be in high demand elsewhere though
-
shotty has sucked for at least four years now….he is horrible, anyone else that says different excepts crap
-
I could care less about the personnel right now. JUST FIRE SCHOTTY….WHY DOES THIS GUY CARRY SO MUCH CLOUT???
-
Why does this guy take all the blame every loss?
-
Thank you…
-
Brendan,
I don’t know about every loss and I don’t think he’s as culpable as every Jet on defense and special teams who performed below their capabilities, but Schotty’s coaching negatively affected the offense. His goal line calls were atrocious and there was simply no reason to call runs on the drive after the safety. The Jets had to conserve clock, but Schotty called 3 LT runs that netted 4 yards and cost 1:23, a lifetime in the NFL. Also, his decision not to start Tone was puzzling….the Jets best play was an improv by Tone after Taylor fell…that’s why you play Tone, he’s a playmaker. I could go on and on…Schotty needs to go for this offense to really take off.
-
I don’t think Schotty should be without blame. But find me one player on the team that can’t take some blame.
I am just so tired of the people who come on here without a genuine or original thought and just turn to the “fire Schotty” regurgitated rhetoric.
-
I guess that I’ve had enough from Schotty. I know who he is, I know his strengths and weaknesses and I just don’t want him as the Jets’ OC anymore. I’m just frustrated with him like I was with Chad. Sure, like Chad, Schotty could go to the perfect team for him and excel, but he really needs to hit the reset button on everything he does as an OC. He needs to work on KISS and KILL…keep it simple, stupid and keep it likable and learnable, which works so well on defense. He’s the Wile E. Coyote of OC’s, he loves his complex plans, when blasting the roadrunner with a shotgun would do the trick, with less risk of failure.
-
Exactly, we often only confuse ourselves. Sure, when run right his plays can work beautifully, but football is not played in a vacume!! It goes back to his lack of a feel for the game and his players. The man just can’t get out of his own way.
-
Schott is mediocre at best. If you consider all of the offensive talent the Jets had on their roster this season, they should have fielded a top-5 offense. No excuse.
The Jets should be able to score at will against almost any team. How many games did the Jets have this year with no TD’s??? It makes no sense.
-
-
Well, the same can be said for your thoughts. As they NEVER change despite the evidance.
Seriously though, were you or were you not screaming for 4 Green runs?
-
Did I say he didn’t deserve blame?
And in case you forgot, they had ONE rushing yard in the first half. So pardon me if I wasn’t flipping over furniture when the Jets didn’t run into a steel wall four straight downs.
And for every piece of “evidence” I’m given to show why Schotty sucks, I give ample evidence to the contrary. But sure, it’s his fault that the O-line was getting manhandled, or the RB’s couldn’t break a tackle, or Sanchez played like he had never seen a football in the first half. That’s all Schotty, right?
Again, he deserves blame, but having to deal with an infinite amount of “FIRE SCHOTTY” nonsense after EVERY SINGLE loss is a joke. I hope the guy gets canned simply so he doesn’t have to deal with that anymore. For those of you who watch only Jets games, there are many aspects of the Jets offense that other teams would (and should) envy. But that’s blasphemous talk after a loss, I forgot I’m only allowed to bash Schotty for putting up 19 points on the best defense in football.
-
It is interesting/ironic that the Jets are getting killed for using too much time running the ball on the last scoring drive – just like genius Belichick did in the Jets’ win. His point was that’s what the D was giving him. Same for the Jets?
I don’t love Schotty, but the D lost this game in the 1st half. If I were confident someone could step in and make Sanchez an All-Pro and add a hundred yards to the offensive average in his first year, I’d be all for it. Doesn’t seem realistic. Looks like he’s staying, so have to hope Schotty’s learning from his errors like everyone else.
-
subwayfare,
Problem was that Pittsburgh D wasn’t giving up running yards. In the series after the safety, LT’s 3 carries were: no gain, 2 yards, and 2 yards…hardly worth it. And, isn’t madness defined as doing the same thing repeatedly, but expecting the outcome to be different? After the first no gain, why 2 more unproductive runs when time was scarce?
Brendan,
In principle, I agree that an OC can draw up the best plays ever, but if there’s a lack of execution by the players, the plays won’t succeed. But, that wasn’t Sanchez and the passing offense in the second half or Shonn Greene running. They WERE executing, but Schotty took the ball away from Greene and Sanchez by running LT too much. Schotty didn’t let his playmakers make plays when they were playing well…isn’t that quite an indictment?
-
We can go back and forth forever on this.
Everyone thinks me as some huge supporter of Schotty, which isn’t true. He frustrates me like everyone else here. But I literally watch about a dozen NFL games every weekend in the regular season. There are so few legitimately good OC’s out there, that a guy like Schotty doesn’t seem so bad. Remember, 21 teams had a worse offense than Schotty, and he was hampered by Sanchez all year.
I agree that sometimes his playcalling gets sketchy, but I also think that if you run on 2nd down with Greene it’s going face first into a buzzsaw. Greene’s numbers were inflated, with 39 of his 52 yards coming on two carries.
Either way, they were facing the best defense in football in their house and I don’t think running head-on into them would have yielded a TD.
But my overall point is that Schotty isn’t great, but he’s not even close to the bottom of the barrel.
-
Brendan,
But on what ended up being the Jets’ last drive after the safety, Schotty called 3 LT runs right up the middle. You know football, so you need to deflect from commenting on those calls because you know they were indefensible. They wasted 1:23 of valuable time and, IMO, compounded the mistake of not hammering the ball 4 straight times with Greene at the goal line. Which was the better situation to try to gain a 2 yards via the run? At the goal line or when you are in the hurry up trying to conserve time? I’m not a serial Schotty-basher, but his play calling was terrible in the 4th quarter. And, remember, the Holmes pass was a play Holmes broke long because of Taylor’s slip…not a SLUGGO called by Schotty. So, I give him -0- credit for the 19 points because 9 weren’t because of his playcalling, 3 should’ve been 7 and the TD to Jericho came at the price of 1:23 just wasted.
-
Oh, there’s a reason I took a shot every time LT carried the ball.
It was like trying to watch the injured wildebeast try and outrun the lion pride.
I said plenty of times today that he had a bad day, and I’m not defending anything he did in the game last night. But people regurgitating talk-radio analysis and having no base from which they’re formulating these opinions gets tiresome.
Obviously, I don’t consider you in this group. But, like almost every Schotty game, he did some things well, did some things horribly, and he wasn’t the reason the team won/lost. He was part of the problem, definitely, but he isn’t THE problem, which is what most posters on here would have you think. -
“I said plenty of times today that he had a bad day, and I’m not defending anything he did in the game last night. ”
He=Schotty, not LT.
-
I say why not run 3 times from the one. Yea the steelers have a great run defense, but we already converted a 4th and 1 earlier. If we can’t get 1 yard on 3 tries then that’s on the o-line.
-
-
Also, the OC can draw up logical, theoretically effective plays, but if they’re not called at the right time, they’re rendered useless. Schottenheimer has problems with when to call what, which often negates any ingenuity to the plays he’s drawn up.
-
Brendan,
IMO, based on 5 years of watching Schotty call plays, he has an abundance of talent, but he doesn’t make his players better. Rex and Pettine make their players better and achieve more than they would if they played in other systems. Schotty limits the effectiveness of his players through his play calling. When he turned it around last year, I thought he finally understood that simplifying his plays brought more success than his complex play book. This year, with more playmakers and a maturing Sanchez, IMO, Schotty regressed. At this point, he’s too Jeckyll & Hyde for me. My only hope is that a confident Sanchez will go to Rex when he thinks Schotty is holding the offense back.
-
-
I hated those LT runs too. Can’t, and won’t, defend the playcalling there. And, I would have run Greene at least 3 times at the goal line. Like I said, I’m not a Schotty fan, but am concerned a system change could be a setback. Who/what’s the alternative?
-
-
-
They ran the ball pretty well on the drive that ended at the goal line so at that point I don’t think the first half is particularly relevant.
Also, Greene made progress running on first down. Everyone complains about throwing it on third but I still can’t figure out why they threw on second.

Totally agree Sackdance. The goal line calls were unforgivable, as were the idiotic hand offs to Tomlinson on the drive after the safety.
Those alone are deserving of a pink slip.
History on the line and we suffer a miscommunication on 2nd down which results in an off-kilter bootleg to Keller, then the mind-boggling slant call on third down – just not enough room to make that throw there. Then we don’t even put our power back in for fourth down. Just inexcusable.
And we’re running draws for LT with like four minutes left down by 12, haha, amazing.
When you make such AWFUL decisions with a precious chance to end a 40 year SB drought, you deserve to be fired instantly.
I’ve never seen the Jets make a SB in my life, and I constantly have Giants and Pats fans reminding me of it, forgive me if I want his head to roll today.
-
-
cuz he sucks!! if he had run the ball with our big RB we wound be in the game in two weeks
-
Honestly I do not know. It seems like he is the scapegoat. Sure he has had plenty of questionable calls, but he also has had some great stints as well. I think hanging on to Brian would not be a bad thing because right now Sanchez only knows Brian. If a new OC comes in with a new playbook…it may take time to develop that plan, and it may take some time getting used to. And patience and time is something that some fans do not have.

I agree we need to get younger, but we need to keep veterans around as well. LT will be back and hopefully next year 3rd times a charm for us. I would love to see Mcknight step up and be the guy Rex knows he can be. We gotta do our best to bring back Holmes and Braylon IMO.
Key players to keep:
Holmes
Braylon
B. Smith
LT
Harris
Cro
Pryce (for development of the rookie DE’s)
Woody will be back same with Jenkins(for his last year)I think Taylor is not coming back, but he may honor his contract for next year. I think TRich is done and Conner is the guy but I would like to see TRich come back as an Asst RB coach of some sort to help keep teaching (but thats a tough choice for him), Ellis I think is gone because he will want to much money and we can’t afford to pay him that much. I’d like to see Brunell back for one more year as our back up to keep teaching Sanchez who made big improvements this year but has more learning to do.
We need our rookies, Connor, Mcknight, Wilson, etc to step up!!
Draft needs are Safeties, DE, LB’s, O Line (backups).
The sky’s the limit for this team and I think we will be right back in the hunt again next year and for years to come. Despite the loss, I am happy we are finally turning things around as a franchise.
-
Agree on all points except that we should/will keep Cromartie. Time to let Wilson develop and Cromartie does not leave room for that. Im guessing we get rid of Cromartie, or maybe even sign him only to trade him early in the season.
Maybe my opinion is just influenced by how easy Revis makes such a demanding responsibility look, but Cromartie just looked plain bad last night.
Also, Id say that we need a DE before the safety, but DE’s are gonna be in short supply as it seems from the all-knowing ESPN/General TV watching that alot of teams need a DE, so we may just be screwed there. (Maybe a trade up again?)
-
i don’t see us trading up, we really don’t have ammunition to do so. we cant trade players away when we need to resign so many, plus without a second round pick i cant even see us trading back to get picks unless we trade our first for 2 seconds or something.
i think we just have to wait at 29 or wherever we are and hope someone falls to us.
-
-
-
IMO, Ellis is still performing at too high a level to let him go. If he signs at a reasonable rate, keep him. I’d also keep LT (maybe cut and re-sign) if Schotty were gone. Someone not as in love with LT would have played him less, allowed him to be a role player, worked Greene more and given McKnight reps. Now, I don’t have any idea whether McKnight is ready for the 3rd down back/passing situation RB.
Brunell, Taylor, T-Rich and Pryce can all be replaced with other (and younger) vets or guys on the roster. There will be lots of vet QBs available for back up duty.
The no. 1 need is a “rush backer.” Problem is that to get one, the Jets would have to trade into the top of the draft and, then, you have to worry about another Gholston-like bust. Where the Jets pick, the best value will be at RB, OL (not LT) and TE because those positions always tend to be undervalued. The Jets can hope a real stud falls to them, especially someone who drops on “character” issues. Failing that, I think the Jets will need to address “rush backer” by trade or free agency.
-
problem is that neither OL, RB and TE are a need for this team.
we need DL, S, and WR (assuming we lose either Holmes or Edwards)
-
-
Schotty can get ahead of himself at times but you guys kill him way too much. Between the dropped passes & the Sanchize throwing some horrible passes,(speaking on the entire season) Schotty isn’t that bad, Rex had just as much to do with yesterdays loss. I might even say it’s more Rex’s fault than it was Schotty’s.(let’s not forget about Westoff)
For the people who say “he calls runs when he should pass, and he passes when he should call runs”.. Please Stfu ..
Sanchez is a modern day vet IMO, he will have more say, will call his own audibles & will continue to evolve. Schotty is OK in my book.
-
Marvel is spot on, Schotty would not be catching so much flack if Sanchez did not think that his recievers were 10 feet tall. As much as Sanchez impressed me in the second half of that game he played his usual garbage football in the first half, and missed several open recievers that would have been game-changing catches.
If we had scored 10 points in the first half, which if Sanchez threw the ball properly we would have, Schotty would be a god. But because Sanchez got hit and kept playing Schotty is a facepalming failure, no. Schotty’s only real failure had nothing to do with his play calling, but his player calling i.e. using LT instead of Green. A retarded choice, but his to make none the less. But where is the scalp Sanchez/Edwards cry (How many catches did Edwards have in the first half again versus how manyt he was thrown to?)
-
-
Priority #1Pass Rush Sign Harris gotta keep Holmes and Edwards Let Go Tomlinson/Taylor/Ellis/Gholston/ Folk/Weatherford/Coleman/Brunell/Richardson/ Let the young guys play. Scott and Cromartie should shut up and tackle somebody
-
Bart Scott was the MVP of the defense. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, you shouldn’t be talking.
-
He’s dramatically overpaid.
-
Then you simply do not understand the defensive scheme the Jets run.

Sorry Master, you are always right and clearly God’s gift to football knowledge. Having not missed a home game, nor playoff game in the last 7 yrs and a pretty flawless track record for the 15 yrs before that, I trust my own opinion.
Is he a leader. Absolutely. Does he play well defensively and perform/handle responsibilites that won’t show in the box score. Yes. Was yesterday his best game. No. But not at all what I’m basing this one. He is going to be 31 yrs old, his guaranteed portion is now up and he is due an average of $6.5m over the next 4 yrs.
He is a leader and knows their defense, etc etc. Not arguing that. But at his age and overall production combined with the restrictions on salary, I think his number has to come down dramatically.
Farrior, who for all intent and purposes is that team’s equivalent has a cap number less than $3m. Granted, he is 5 yrs older but he signed that deal at effectively the same age Bart is now.
So, I’m not in anyway diminishing his importance, or suggesting he become a cap casualty. But I do stand very strong that he is overpaid and I would battle my wits against anyone, even you Oh Great One.
-
Ok, first, grow up. I never tell people I know everything, but I do know something. And having a top tier LB at $6.5 million/year (when the new market value for top ILB contracts is topping 10 million) is good value.
If you replaced Scott with James Farrior, the Jets wouldn’t be a top 10 rush defense. He’s the weak link in that defense, ask any Steelers fan. And he signed his current deal when he was 33, which is 3 years older than Scott is right now. So, no, his deal is not comparable since he signed it as a 33 year-old giving his team a hometown discount, when Scott was signed as a 28 year old when he was just entering his prime.
Scott is 30, but he also spent his first 3 seasons playing only special teams. He’s a young 30 (31 at some point during training camp).
There’s a reason he and Harris don’t switch roles very often, and it’s because Scott is one of the few players in the entire league that can do what he does. He’s a sledgehammer that crushes a team’s blocking intent before they can impose their blocks.
Call me a know-it-all if you like, but at least know what you’re talking about first.
-
I was talking about Scott’s age now, compared to what Farrior WAS (I thought 32 and using age 31 for Scott), so my apology for being 12-14 months off, I don’t think that is reflects me not knowing anything. And you did say, I “simply do not understand the defense”. That’s a pretty good implication that you said I dont know what I’m talking about- so why don’t you grow up. You do an awful amount sitting on this board from the ivory tower.
Of course Farrior is the weak link, he is surrounded by Timmons, Harrison, Woodley, Hampton, Polamalu- none of which the Jets can even closely match.
It’s all opinion and perspective pal. I think Farrior when he signed (and maybe still even now), is very comparable to Bart going into the 11/12′ season. That takes into account their on the field play as well as the intangibles and the recognition of the defenses.
Bart got $22m over the last 3 yrs, which is fine. Won’t argue that. But going forward at $6-8m annually, it is too high in a cap-restricted system. If he loves the coach so much, it would be even and more commensurate with his play that he collect $3-4m annually.
Sorry that’s my opinion and I know exactly what I’m talking about. I don’t sit on the computer and look up ages, etc, so I rounded about but my point remained consistent and just because you’re on the other side means very little to me.
-
Chill, Chris. I don’t understand how you can compare a contract that Farrior signed at age 33 for a hometown discount to signing a player at age 28 when he is very much still in the prime of his career. Sure, Scott’s getting paid twice as much, but that’s how it works.
Do you realize what the market is for ILB’s? You want one of the best ILB’s in football to make as much as, say, a late-first round rookie?
And I’m sorry if you’re upset that the Jets lost or something, but how about we grow up. I don’t sit in an ivory tower, I don’t judge, I simply look at something like calling the heart and soul of the entire team (not just the defense) “overpaid” for reasons that still are unclear to me as uninformed.
If you knew the defense, you would know that Rex’s entire scheme fails without a guy doing what Scott does. If you remove him from the unit, the team is middle-of-the-pack defensively, maybe close to top 10 if they have a great season. How that isn’t worth $6-$7 million is beyond me.
Have a good day pumpkin, I’ve got a long climb to the top of my awesome ivory tower to judge all the lowly imbeciles taking up space on this blog.
(sarcasm, everyone, before you take that personally).
-
Scott should renegotiate and accept a “home coach” discount then. Take 3 Million to stay, and he can stay, but I am not paying him $6M.
Yesterday Farrior was the superior player, no could argue othersise. Scott had a horrible game yesterday while Farrior had a superior game.

-
I agree, but yesterday won’t be on his personal highlight reel and, for the record, Harris was just as disappointing and he’s a stud, too. Bad time to come out flat and tackle like Cro, circa last year’s Chargers playoff game.
-
pitt is not a bad team and our d only gave up 17 points as bad as they looked yesterday they still werent that bad…take away that fumble and that roughing the kicker call who knows we can all be talking about how are we gonna beat the packers right now…pitt is going to the superbowl yet they couldnt stop holmes cotch or keller
-
Rodgers and his receivers are going light up the Pitt secondary.
-
Plus cromartie carried several steelers drives onward for them… Bbut yah let’s get rid of Scott because he makes standard pay and won’t work for the pay of a rookie. Scott honestly did not even have that bad of a game if you paid any attention, but oh wait that’s right the announcers commented that he was getting owned so here you guys come regurgitating whatever they spit out.
-
-
-
Too bad my last reply to you was taken off the Blog The 2 mvp`s of the defense are Revis and Harris IDIOT. Try watching a game dummy and don`t be such a wise guy have a little respect for rest of us don`t know what we are talking about JET FANS. WOULD LOVE TO MEET YOU SOMEDAY
-
-
-
I agreed with Brendan. Scott is not overpaid for what he does on defense and for his leadership.
-
+1 Lets not throw the babby out with the bath water. I’d bring our entire team back as is, but add a few missing ingrediants (if it were possible).
With the obvious exception of the OC.
-
-
The Jets didn’t lose because of Sanchez, they lost because they don’t have an EFFECTIVE pass rush. If this game were against the Pack, Pitt loses. Pitt is going to have a rough go of it in the S.B. The secondary played well. The Jets are too old upfront and they don’t have legit pass rushers. Shotty is the worse IMHO, say what you want defending him. This is a team that hasn’t scored a T.D. in the first quarter in 15 games. If the Jets do it at Pitt we win the game. Shotty is spotty at best as an OC. Tell me if your honest, do you think any of the last 8 teams would rather have him than who they have right now? I thought so!
-
the only good thing the core of our players are young…we have to keep a couple vets for leadership and tutorlige…we do have to get younger on our defensive line thats a priority and if that means we have to waste a season to get that done than we have to…we are set on o-line for years not for nothing i really think turner and slausson did a total 180 from the beginning of the season…and i know im gonna get reemed out for this but id keep folk and weatherford one more year unless something for the same price falls on our lap…another guy who did a 180 from the beginning of the season i think was pool id keep one more year if his price dont go up
-
Shottenhimer (Too many years)
-
Keep LT, Taylor and Ellis. I don’t know what’s all this BS talk about Ellis being too old and done. Did you guys already forget about his two sacks on Brady? LT and Taylor still has some burst. And Bart Scott is NOT overpaid. He took over as leader of the defense when Leonard got injured. In my opinion, as long as Rex Ryan is the Jets coach, Bart Scott is on the team. When Ryan left Baltimore to come to New York, he brought Scott and Leonard with him, which should show his love (as football players) for them.
-
Moves have to be made and I think if you make them its chess not checkers they need to be calculated.
Jason Taylor is gone he is owed too much money and he is probably going to retire.
Shaun Ellis i would love to stay but i think he is gone as well.
Tony Richardson gone his replacement has been on the roster and under contract.
Marc Brunnell is gone time to groom a backup.
Ladanian Tomlinson is back he is going to honor his contract.
Vernon Gholston is a goner he better go to the wwe or something.
Trevor Pryce will be back mainly as a backup
Antonio Cromartie will be back he will show loyalty for fronting that money.
Kris Jenkins gone he hasnt finished a season and cant see him coming back unless its at a reduced rate and i dont see that happening.
Braylon Edwards i’d love to see him back but i dont think its happening.
Santonio Holmes will be back he is too much of a talent not to bring back…With that these are some of the faces i would like to see brought in…
Haloti Ngata HE IS THE GOLD STANDARD if there is any way to get him you have to make that move he is a difference maker and another Rex guy which helps.
Jason Hatcher (fa) Dal
He has a ton of upside and he played in the 3-4 in dallas so he knows the system.
Plaxico Burress Why not?
a new safety please!!!!! -
What bothered me with the defense was how does a RB dance 5 yards behind the line and no linemen or LB’ers get to him? Where was Harris,Scott, Pace or Thomas? It was a horrible time to come up with bad games by all of them.
-
agreed – horrible tackling that game. amazing how basic fundamentals can change a game.
-
-
I think the Jets could really go a number of ways and knowing T, he’s going to leave no stone unturned.
I will say this though. The game is won in the trenches. Protection and pressure are more important in ‘today’s NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE that favors the passing offense.’ However, I didn’t think either of our lines played terribly yesterday. Our big D line guys are supposed to eat blockers and lets 52 and 57 pursue to the ball carrier. They overpursued. Sorry Bart Scott and David Harris did not have the types of games we are used to seeing. I think it can be attributed to being a little tired after all the stress of consistently having to play on the road, but what do I know?
Also, Gholston was inactive the entire post-season and will ultimately be released contributing zero sacks. That blunder of a pick cannot be stressed enough. For the record I don’t hate the guy, who am I too, but you are talking about (nyjetscap please) umpteen millions of dollars just straight up wasted. Yeah he had some special teams tackles during his 3 years, but jeez you have to be thinking like 24 million for 10 tackles or something. Just terrible.
Man I gotta take a walk. -
I think that LT will be back, but I think next near the use of a 3rd back will come into play. McKnight has to step up and be that guy. Having a 3 back rotation can help keep people fresh. But Defense is what we should focus on in the Draft and FA. We need to get pash rushers and younger in the front 7. I agree that we need to try and Keep Holmes and Edwards, but I wonder if they will leave for the money or stay here because they love it here. The key work is younger. I think we have to keep pace with the pats. They are still the AFC East Champs, and they have a young team and got a boat load of picks as well. They will probably develop and have a run in them for the next 3-5 years pending on how long Brady stays.
-
The handwriting is on the wall. I expect a significant turnover along the defensive front. Last year they lost by being picked apart by Manning. They realized they needed to get better at corner and made that a priority. Look at what happened yesterday. Pittsburgh ran the ball down our throat on the first couple of drives and set the tone for the whole game. I think that Rex fundamentally believes that you need a dominant player at the heart of the DL. All year he has constantly praised Ngata and Wilfork. He wants a player like that to anchor his line. He thought he had one in Jenkins but we all know what happened with that. By yesterday, he was so desperate to have a true wide body DT that they activated an UDFA who had never played an NFL down. That tells me they had a feeling what was coming. I think Rex is a really good coach. He seems to understand what it takes to consistently win playoff games. I think being dominant on the defensive front is what is going to the priority this offseason. Try to find a dominant inside force who can consistently occupy multiple blockers and a rusher or two who can then exploit the edges. I don’t think anyone on the current roster fits the description for either of those roles at this point in their careers.

To people defending Schottenheimer:
The Jets were held out of scoring a touchdown an astounding 4 times this year.
In addition to those games, I can’t recall how many games Schottenheimer had a terrible game plan. Last night being one of them.
I’m not saying he deserves all of the blame, however he deserves a huge chunk. We need an OC which mirrors Rex’s mentality. Someone who goes for the kill, someone who has an aggressive game plan. Someone who has confidence in his QB to deliver, someone such as the Steelers coordinator.
Schottenheimer is too conservative and inconsistent to take this team to a Superbowl victory. The truth is that the defense bails out the offense. Last night, in the 1st half, the defense did not bail the offense out, and it was too late when the defense started playing well for the Jets to make a comeback. 3 1st half points, and I can’t see much blame for anyone else than Schottenheimer for that. Also, part of the 24 points were Schottenheimer’s fault too. How? With a game plan that sustained drives and held the Steelers to limited time on the field we would have limited the amount of opportunities they had to score and thus they would have scored less. Schottenheimer did not have a successful game plan.
Did the defense start the first half of the game poorly? Yes. Did it miss opportunities and take costly penalties? Yes. However, the offense did not show up for 3 quarters. The 4 play calls on the Pitt 1 were awful. The playcalling on the final drive was abysmal. There was no sense of urgency, and there were plays that shouldnt have been made at all.
Schotty deserves the majority of the blame. I’m sorry. I’m dumbfounded with his supporters here. There is a reason he’s never had a top 10 offense in the league. Fire Schotty, promote Callahan.
-
How many of those touchdownless games should have had a TD?
Pats game? Definitely. Team had deer-in-headlights looks on before the opening kickoff. But they were moving the ball, no excuse not to score.
Packers game? 100%. They only missed about 3 or 4 TD opportunities.
Ravens game? Maybe not, but they also **** the bed and Sanchez looked like he was seeing ghosts out there.
Miami game? Um, aside from the fact that Holmes dropped a wide-open TD, they should have scored at least one other time. But it’s Schotty’s fault!
And Callahan’s offense is more complicated with more motion and is more predictable.
-
Pats game? Who’s play calling it was it when Sanchez threw it into triple coverage? Given, it’s Sanchez’ fault for throwing it there to begin with. But wait, didn’t you say the entire team had deer-in-headlights looks? Why in the world would anyone call such a high risk play, being down 24-3, with a demoralized team?
Packers game? Given, Sanchez had 2 picks that should have been given to the receiver. Those killed drives. Only game I will give to Schottenheimer.
Ravens game? Probably some of the worst offensive play calling i’ve seen.
Dolphins game? Holmes dropped a wide open TD. Yes. Do you have an excuse for every other drive the Jets had that game? The Jets had 6 points against the 7-9 Dolphins… 3 of which were due to a field goal after Holmes dropped the ball. 6 points. You mean to tell me that Schottenheimer doesn’t deserve the blame in that game because he was fairly successful on 2 drives? You mean to tell me that we will have 2 successful offensive drives, in a playoff hunt, and that it would be satisfactory? Please.
And predictability? What do you call Schottenheimers 4 plays on the 1 last night? The Steelers were ready for each one. No surprises whatsoever.
-
But I guess it’s not Schotty’s fault, seeing as how you won’t respond.
-
-
-
-
just looked at a list of free agents this year was not impressed seems like we have sign our own and to have another draft like 2006 and trader mike has to do his thing
-
umm this is a perfect free agent pool for jets.
Pass Rushing DL/LB available:
Haloti Ngata
Cullen Jenkins
Mathias Kiwanuka
LaMarr Woodley
Tamba Hali
-
-
Now that I think about it, Keller deserves some of the blame along with Schotty. Yes, it was stupid to throw 2/4 times in the endzone. BUT, if you look at it, that first pass play was well executed and Sanchez threw it where Keller had a clear shot at catching it, but dropped it. Although Schotty is still to blame, Keller deserves some too.
-
Was this a serious comment? Keller came up clutch at crucial points in last nights game. Sanchez threw the ball too low and away from Keller for him to have a legitimate chance at it. The only way he could have caught it was if he made an all out dive for it and the only logical reason anyone would dive is if they had enough time to adjust and recognize that diving is required to have a chance at the ball. Sanchez gunned the ball, there wasn’t enough reaction time for Keller to realize that he needed to dive. Terrible comment.
-
Someone needs to explain to Keller the importance of going to the 1st down marker on his routes. I don’t know how many Jet drives were killed this year with Keller coming up 1-2 yards short of a 1st down.
-
-
If we don’t pick up 2 young DL this year and a dedicated pass rusher our D is toast next yearwe need to get a young NT under jenkins to groom. I say keep ellis. This offseason needs to be all about the D safety we need to drop cro put wilson on the outside where he is more comfortable and bring in a good proven nickelback and pace and thomas don’t cut it as either run stop or pass rush id rather have them good at one but suck at the other then be average at both. We just need to try to keep this offense group together maybe move ducasse to RT work mcknight into replacing LT late round WR maybe in the draft as a project, no more high draft picks where we change the players position thomas, gholston, etc. We need proven players to help out this team next year.
-
It’s great to be in the AFC Championship and all but the fall from the top is harder. It was easy being 7-9 8-8 or 9-7 but to be real good and expect more is tough when ther goals aren’t reached. It felt like a family member died last night adn today. Thats about the best way to describe my emotions. I love Rex best jets coach ever but we really need to re-tool some of these older never was players with some younger passionate players.
-
Just read on another site that Rex stated that Schotty will be back next year…. We will never win a SB if this guy continues to be the OC of this team…
-
Just wondering, what’s your area of expertise? Rex’s is coaching and winning NFL football games. That’s certainly not mine, and since you’re here commenting I doubt that’s yours either. I’ll leave the football decisions to the football mind.
-
And what indications are there that Schottenheimer will ever lead this team to a Superbowl? The Majority of our wins come due to strong defensive play, not strong offensive play. It’s ridiculous to think what this team would look like with a strong offense and defense. It would be virtually unstoppable.
For some reason you are blinded on Schottenheimer. It’s clear as day. Just don’t understand why you refuse to believe it…
-
The fact that Schotty creates all this controversy, combined with the less than stellar historical statistical rankings, indicates that OC can in fact be improved upon.
He is OK, but he is not a must keep. If there is a veteran OC available I would consider that person, and I would consider promoting Callahan rather than letting him leave and take an OC position elsewhere.
REX stated that he expects some of his assistants to be in demand elsewhere, I suspect that means Callahan.
I would promote him and release Schotty.
-
Callahan will be a lot more sorely missed than Schottenheimer.
-
true statement right there

All this hypothesizing is fun, but until the terms of the new CBA are released(fingers crossed there is one), there is no way of knowing what the Jets can and can’t do. I will say that I trust Mike T completely to manage the roster appropriately and not hamstring the team going forward. Almost every single move paid off this year, and I expect him to continue his aggressive ways this offseason.
The one thing that I will say is that the Jets will and probably should let go of antonio cromartie if the price tag gets too high. It is rare for rookie CBs to come into the league and develop into pro bowlers in their first year(devin mccourty aside) and I think Wilson has the ability to develop nicely. Revis/Leon and DeAngelo Hall/Woodson all were solid in their first year, but had their ups and downs. I think the Jets have developed a nice stable of DBs (outside of Revis) with Wilson, Coleman, Cole, Lowery, and I like Trufant.
Its this depth that leads me to believe Mike T will sign both Holmes and Edwards. They are GREAT COMPLEMENTARY receivers who I think will be willing to structure their contracts to allow the Jets to keep them both. IMO, keeping Edwards and Holmes is the key to the Jets offense going forward. When you look at most successful QBs in the league they always have one or two guys who they know. With one more full offseason together, I think the trio of Holmes/Edwards/Keller can be really special.
The only other no-brainer I see is David Harris. You hold onto that guy for dear life. He is a team player who does all the litte things. He should get paid first.
-
Harris was terrible yesterday, but yes he is a keeper but not at some incredibly high rate.
-
-
Holmes, Edwards and Harris all need to come back with Long-term extensions.
-
That will cost a lot of money that may be needed to sign a pass rusher.
I am very afraid of Edwards or Holmes self destructing once they get paid, and Harris is very solid but not pro bowl caliber.
-
It all depends on price, of course. I let Taylor and Cromartie go for sure and possibly Ellis and LT
-
-
-
this is the way i see it
Gone/Cut
Ellis – some other 3-4 team will give him a big contract and i dont see the jets re-signing him unless its the vet min.
Taylor – anytime someone thinks about retiring hes already retired.
D. Woody – older and makes to much money. hunter, who is also a FA, proved that he can handle playing rt or they can move Ducasse there. either way the jets have option.
Ghoston – well the guy just flat out stinks! maybe a change of scenery and a 4-3 team can help his career.
B Thomas – hasnt lived up to the contract. makes to much and is older..we need some fresh legs
Eric Smith – i think that was smiths 3rd or 4th stupid penalty in a big spot this season. he cant cover, can sure hit, but hes a liability in coverage.
Coleman – i think everyone knows where i stand at with him. he cant cover a school text book never mind a wr. good at blitzing but we need more then just a blitzing cb.
LT – the jets can decide to cut him. he showed alot of wear and tear late in the season. greene is much better and should be the main focal point in the run game next year.
Bray Bray – i hate the fact that im writing this but bray bray is probally a goner. holmes is the better WR. even though bray played great downthe stretch i can see the jets going with holmes.
B Smith – someone out there is going to offer him some decent cash to be a wr/rb/qb. may be to expensive for the jets to keep.
Weatherford – great reg season and took a nose dive in the playoffs.
Folk – way to much up and down with this guy. we need more stability at the kicker position.
Richardson – time to hang it up…bring him back as a position coach of some kind. great leader and person.
k clemens – i can see teams like the cards, vikings, 49ers, fins signing him. never really got a chance if u look at it so maybe getting out of ny will benefit him
Brunell – to old…i would like to bring back penny in this position. at this point chad can be a tremendous tutor for the sanchize. think about it, where does sanchez struggle with the most??..accuracy..and who holds the nfl record for most accuarcy?? thats right pennington.
C Pace – i know some people will disagree here with me but what has pace really brought to the table this year?? he had some moments but for the money he needs to have a lot of moments. he disappears way to much in games and he missed/whiffed on at least 5 tackles yesterday.
Pool – im going 50/50 on this guy. at times he played poorly and at times he showed he can be good but ultimately it will come down to $$$ at the right price he will be back.
Jenkins – i love the big fella but 6 games in 2 years while holding a big cap number doesnt favor him coming back unless a pay cut is going to happen. knowing jenks hes not taking the pay cut. he knows that another team will offer him some decent cashola to play.
Hartstock – 1.25 mill for a back up te who doesnt catch doesnt make much sense.
Resigns
Cro – the jets wont give him a long term contract maybe a 2 or 3 year contract to keep him hungry.
Harris – duh….enough said
Holmes – big play wr who will get a nice deal from the jets.
Pryce – he loves rex!! i cant see him playing for anyone else….
FA’S
Woodley – the jets probably can sign one big FA and who better then woodley. the steelers are usually very cheap and let players go. they signed Harrison to a big deal so i don’t see them spending a lot of money on another olb.
Pennington – look at notes above
Cadillac Williams – hurt alot but stayed healthy last 2 seasons. still young and can be a nice 1-2 punch with greene. wont get alot of money considering health record.
stockley – with holmes back and bray gone cotchery can move back to the outside and stockley can move into the slot position were he is effective. another low cost move that can pay dividends.
David Thomas Te- Can block and catch better then hartstock. wont command alot of money
Olindo Mare – better then folk…
Alan Branch – big NT, 6’5 339lbs, who didnt get much play in arizona. Rex can get something out of him.
marcous stroud – play him at de
michael lewis – safety help
ok thats what i think
-
Little extreme to gut the entire roster so we can sign Lamar Woodley dont you think?
-
ok so on my list who are you keeping?? is every player on there that much of a stretch??
-
None of your FA’s are likely to get signed.
Your cuts aren’t off base, although I doubt they get rid of all 3 of their OLB’s in one offseason, so I would expect at least Pace to return.
And after the breaking news that just came out about Cro & Bart getting into it on the flight home, I doubt he’s coming back either.
-
emotions were high…they just lost a big game…i wouldnt put to much stock in it.
pace makes alot of money..they will ask him to take a pay cut for sure if not then who knows what will happen
-
Eh, I would. Scott/Ellis aren’t just veterans on the team. They’re the vocal leaders of the team (Bart especially). For them to openly call out Cro on a team flight is not a good sign, and rumors are that Rex is not happy with Cro at all. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone.
-
well if rex isnt happy then hes gone. after back to back afc champs games rex can call some shots here with tanny.
if cro is a goner then wilson becomes that much more important…time for him to step up…
-
-
-
-
They aren’t cutting Bryan Thomas and Calvin Pace. MAYBE, BT, but he is paid appropriately, so I expect him to be around. I expect they will try to restructure Woody’s contract. Unless they see something from Vlad Ducasse that suggests he is ready, I think they need Woody as insurance. I dont see them cutting both BSmith and Braylon. I would be suprised if Braylon is gone quite frankly.
Side Note: Tanny is not an idiot, if/when he signs Holmes/Edwards he is going to provide himself of a ton of protection if they do something stupid. This probably goes for any team that will offer them a deal.
Also, ESmith is a great contributor on special teams, if he gets around the edge instead of westerman yesterday, we’d be talking about the Packers today. I dont see him commanding big $, so the Jets will try and retain him IMO.
Same goes for Drew Coleman…not gonna command big dollars, it is very important for DBs to understand rex’s schemes. Rex likes him, he’ll be around too.
You just can’t underestimate the importance of keeping guys around that understand the Jets philosophy. This team has gone to the AFC championship two straight years…can’t gut everything as an emotional reaction.
-
BT counts $3.8MM against the salary cap with a $0 hit if we cut him. Say goobye to BT!
-
-
-
-
-
With Schotty as our OC, we’re gonna win 10 straight Super Bowls!!!!1
-
thats the first time i cracked a smile all day
-
Only if the team signs Woodhead to a lifetime contract first.
-
And sign Thomas Jones and Faneca back because we need their leadership.
-
-
-
Ellis: Showed life in the playoffs. One more year.
Jenkins: Too much, too injury prone: Done
Taylor: Don’t get me started: Done
T Rich: Unfortunately, should retire. Shame to go out without a SB.
Brunell: Probably retiring
Pryce: Keep as an emergency option.
Gholston: Duh. Unless he wants to work for free. Nah, never mind.
LT: One more year. I see limited carries and maybe 500 yards and a few receptions next year. Time for Greene and Mcknight.
Obvious resigns IMO: Edwards, Cro, Smith, Harris
Folk’s a goner, possibly Weatherford
Holmes: If possible, BE should be the priority
FIRE SCHOTTY!
I think Pool is better at SS then Jimmy. I love Jimmy to death, but he’s not as good in coverage, largely because of his size. Doesn’t mean we have to get rid of Jimmy though.
Get a FS! And pass rush.
If we can’t get Holmes, draft a speedy wide receiver to work the slot.-
u dont need a speedy wr at the slot position..u need a guy who can run routes and find the soft spots in coverage …leave the speed guys to the outside.
-
Holmes is much better than Braylon, but without the other neither will come close to their effectiveness from this season.
Jenkins is already working on coming back, and this time he didn’t balloon up to 400 lbs. after surgery. Give him a chance to come into camp in shape and healthy before writing him off.
-
-
Jets NEED Ellis, who else could sack brady so much

I imagine Brunell WOULD accept a demotion to third QB. It’s not like he’s going to start anywhere, he’s built a relationship with Sanchez and other guys on the team. And why would he want to go play for another team when he could stick with Rex? I think there’s about a -5% chance Richardson comes back. Having 2 FBs just isn’t necessary. That roster spot would be better served on another WR so that we could use the spread offense. Ellis should come back, no questions about that. If you question whether or not Ellis should be back next year then you aren’t a Jets fan.
-
Did you guys watch the Packers v. Bears game? Did you see the ease with which the Packers marched down the field on that first drive?
Granted, Rogers is a terrific QB, but Sanchez is perfectly capable of making those same throws. You can’t tell me the combination of Jennings, Driver, Jones and Nelson is any better than Edwards, Holmes, Cotchery and Keller. I think we also equal out with GB’s o-line.
Perhaps the difference is execution; perhaps it’s coaching. I know the Jets will never drive up a score with a ground and pound philosophy, but I still expect to see more explosiveness from these players.
-
Zen,
Reel it back in bud. Rodgers > Sanchez. There is one very obvious reason Sanchez isn’t marching right down the field like Rodgers, and that is because Rodgers is playing as well as any QB in football right now.
-
The highest QB rating in NFL history during the regular season AND during the playoffs. So basically, according to QB ratings, Aaron Rodgers is the best QB ever. But he’s also in his sixth year now and Sanchez is in his second. Rodgers rode the bench for 3 years before he became the starter. Comparing him to Sanchez isn’t a fair comparison.

Guys, go to this site http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary11.html and you will get your answers who will be cut based on salary cap hits. Based on this sitethe following players will be gone:
Big Jenk (Cap Savings of $4,600,000) unless he sings an incentive laden deal.
Gholston: Cap Savings of only $400,000, but a salary and bonus of $3MM.
Woody: Cap Savings of $3.2MM. Would bring him back for $1MM just to tutor Ducase and let Hunter walk who will be more expensive.
BT: $3.8MM Cap Savings.
Taylor: $2MM Cap Savings (bring him back for $1MM).
Hartsock: Cap Savings of $1.650MM.

Why aren’t we saving 2mil by getting rid of Brian.
Brian is the last link to the SOJ.
Break the link.
We need a offense.
-
The fans are the last link to the SOJ.
-
That is true, and no matter what there will be fans out there who will think that no matter what happens until the Jets get the SB win. It is dumb to think that way, but there are people out there. I wish that would change.
-
-
I would be concerned about getting Rid of Brian. I just think that Sanchez and Brian have a good chemistry, and I don’t want to break that just yet. Bringing in a new OC and a new playbook may take time to get adjusted to. I could be wrong, but it is just a thought.

What you think bout the jets gettin rid of cro, woody,t rich, pryce, both the smiths, thomas, hartstock, clemens, ihedigbo, tht frees up some cash, you still got jenks taylor vernon ellis devito revis pool lowery wilson slim shady scott harris pace, coleman, pouha. sign nnamdi asomugha, he already got his pay day with the raiders, he wants to play for rex these guys want to win, on offense you bring back holmes and edwards they both want to jets, they both will be back, what yall thinkk
-
Don’t forget about Potty (Ropati Pitoitua) who is a behemoth and was destroying offensive lines prior to rupturing his achilles.
-
Dunno. I would keep Brad Smith he is a big part of special teams. Cromartie I would keep as well. We do not need another CB. We need to address the pah rush and the D-line and OLB first and foremost. The other guys Im up in the air about…Mr. T has got a lot of work to do.

i cannot emphasize how great it is to be a pro athlete. just look at erik ainge–guy got paid 600k this season. for what? to chill in the leagues substance abuse program, presumably for smoking weed.
i hope he’s a savvy investor and has planned adequately for his future, because lord knows he won’t be in this league too much longer.

I think we need to make a clear commitment to ONE of our big name receivers and let the others go. We need to keep in mind that Sanchez has a history with passing to Patrick Turner and if we try to bring him along with Jerricho we will have a clear 1, 2, and 3 wide receiver (I personally think Braylon will offer the most value and least consequence IMO). Then we need to cut Hartsock and develop Mulligan to block and Cumberland to duo with Keller. This will allow Mark to grow chemistry with a good group of YOUNG talent. If we move on from Woody, then we need to extend Hunter and let him battle Vlad. for the RT spot next season (the loser backs up). Also, bring in another veteran receiver to bring new knowledge to offer Sanchez and let Brunnell and Clemens go. OK, so we let Holmes and Smith walk, thank them for their work and wish them luck, then get over it. We’ll look good on offense.
Now, one late-round offensive draft pick (RB, WR, OL, QB), we need to draft 2 OLB, one DL, one ILB and one DB (Jeremy Beal-1, Marvin Austin-2, Deunta Williams-3, Nate Irving-4, Lawrence Wilson-5. We will need this b/c I propose we do not resign Cro, Coleman will get too much $, Eric Smith, Laury, and cut Pace and BT, and let JT stay on to groom the young OLB’s. Most importantly, we need to try to secure Ellis and Pryce, use Jenkins wisely=sparingly until playoffs+renegotiate, and buy/sell Gholston (who knows/cares). This my friends=Gang Green success IMO -
A big part of which free agents we bring back should be based upon the amount of money and years they would be willing to accept to come back.
I want Edwards, Holmes, and Cromartie all back, but only if they’re willing to take contracts that won’t stymie the team in signing other players.
If all these players really do love playing for Rex and truly want to win, they won’t be trying to make the Jets pay top dollar for them.
-
Matt Higgins (exec VP) said on Twitter that there was absolutely no truth to the Bart/Cro rumors. And as far as releasing Cro goes, I personally love the guy, but if he is let go, you have to think that ups the chances of the FO targeting Asomugha. Rex loves his corners. He wont be able to resist….
-
Please Mike T. find a way to bring in Nnamdi Asomugha if you can’t find a legitamate pass rusher via free agency or the upcoming draft!
-
Revis and Nnamdi would be awesome together.
-
-
I’m guessing that Jenkins comes back if only bc he provides depth at. the position. Of course, they also could let him go, let Ellis go, and sign Ngata, but he is going to cost TONS.
Taylor, BT, Trich, Woody, Cro, one of Edwards/Holmes (un
ess both take discounts), should all go.Pick up either Ngata (drop Jenk), Richard Seymore, or Woodley or Tamba Hali, or Namdi, as a big time free agent acquisition.
Depending on whether you signed a DE or LB, draft the other one.
IMO the biggest issue we had this year was our OLB were terrible in the Pass Rush, and liabilities in coverage, and in some games like yesterday, our ILB can over pursue and miss tackles.
And so yes a pass rushing DE would be nice, but Give me three horses on the line and ELITE LBers. That’s what the Steelers do.
-
I hope Nnamdi was serious about the possibility of one day teaming up with Revis, because the opportunity is right in front of him.

From Rod Boone
Trevor Pryce said Rex asked him to come back for another season, but he’s going to take some time off and think about it. #Jets
Steve Weatherford said he hasn’t had much beyond a very preliminary conversation with #Jets. Sounds like he’s not going to be asked back.
