The New York Time mentioned recently that Left Guard for the Jets Matt Slauson is saving for a new home, and made the decision (registration required) to move his family back in with his parents until everything is settled.
Matt Slauson, the starting left guard for the New York Jets last season, has already scaled back. He said he feared that next season could be canceled, depending on how and when negotiations between players and team owners are resolved, and that influenced his wedding plans.
“I didn’t feel comfortable having this grand wedding, which would have been great,” he said. “I’m constantly working with my budgets. I know that this week could be my last week in the N.F.L., and then I won’t have any more checks coming in.”
While he has a four-year, $1.8 million contract, he still has to make the team each season because his contract is not guaranteed. That is why he, his wife and their baby are living with his parents while he waits to see what will happen next year.
It may seem absurd for a person who made $390,000 last year, as Mr. Slauson did, to move back home. But it reflects a sense that the good times may not go on forever. He said his primary financial goal was to be able to buy a house, and this would help him save for it.
Slauson’s a smart dude, and I applaud him for making good financial decision that will help him over the long term. Keith Fitzhugh turned down a cup of coffee with the Jets this fall to support his family, so while some people might think Slauson’s move is a punch-line, I believe that Slauson will have the last laugh.
As far as living with in-laws? I can now speak about that from personal experience. For the past few months while we’ve been looking for our new home in Virginia, my family has been living with my in-laws and while we’re excited to get into our own house finally at the end of this month (YAY!) living at their home has been a great experience for all involved. The grandparents have loved seeing their grandchild every night, and my wife and I have enjoyed the lower bills to save towards renovations and down payments on our next house – and hey – the free babysitting perq doesn’t hurt either. While it’s not a long-term solution, it’s been a great experience I wouldn’t trade and will have helped out my family in the long run. Slauson clearly gets long-term financial planning and is willing to make some smart financial decisions.

In the metro NY area $390K isn’t a lot of money (after taxes) especially if it has to last two years. A starter home in the Florham Park area is over $500K, you need to put $100K down and still have a huge payment, takes in that area are over $15K, cars, utilities, food, living expenses… He’ll be renting the basement to some Jet fan.
In KC he’s king of the hill, in NJ not so much.

The average household income in NJ is just over $70k per year. Considering he made more than 5 times that last year I have a hard time being concerned he may have to make it last for two years. If he is moving in with his parents he is living in Nebraska. How much does an apartment in Lincoln, Nebraska go for? How much do you think his parents are making? I would guess his mom and dad aren’t making $390K/year.

Just keep plowing the roads, Matt. You’ll get that payday and the adoration that comes with being a Jets trench warrior soon enough.

really pulling for this guy, he was a very big supprise this year and i see him only getting better
plus, my good buddy hates him so i love rubbing it in his face that he is playing well

I can’t believe that his parents require him to register just to live with them !
(sorry couldn’t resist it)

Congrats on your new home Bassett! I’ve been living at home since I moved back after college 3 years ago and will finally be able to buy an apartment this summer.

why am i not surprised that Johnny Reefer is back home wiht mom?
Can we all stop with the “in these tough times” crap. You guy’s are acting like it’s the great depression. At worst 5 more people out of every hundread are unemployed now then in “good times”.
He wants to move home, fine, but it’s becasue it’s eaiser then getting an apartment for the next 6 months before the season, not becasue he’s worried about paying rent.
-
Even if that number is accurate (which I doubt, nothing personal, but those numbers are always reported with bias and spin), that’s still 15,000,000 more unemployed people in this country than in “good times”.
And in either case, what the situation is for the majority does not necessarily have anything to do with individuals. Perhaps Johnny has a highly specialized field that has yet to recover from the recession. Perhaps he lost a job to downsizing that was eliminated completely from an industry by a technological advance (which happened to many people, considering how many companies were researching ways to eliminate the need for certain jobs).
My point is, it’s not as cut and dry as “the recession’s over, move on”. The recession, technically speaking, has yet to subside, it’s just leveled off.
I will now go back to the Nerdery with the other Nerdlings to talking about Nerdy things.

I completely agree about the stats, they may or may not be accurate. Really who the hell knows.
I’m just tired of the daily doom and gloom. 10% unemployment means 90% of the people are working, yet every move anyone makes is digested in view of “these times”. Like it’s the only consederation peole have.
Johnny could indeed be all those things…but he could just as likely be a pot head(not that there is anything wrong with that)!!
-
The thing is, the way the numbers are reported can falsely skew the numbers up or down. And the economic “experts” are wrong as much as the ESPN “experts” are wrong about…well, everything.
I feel about complaining in real life the same way I do about it on here, which is fairly well documented. But I also am understanding to the fact that no two people’s situations are the same, so I should give people the benefit of the doubt, at least until Ben Bernanke comes out of his coo-coo clock, shouts “RECESSION OVER” a few times and scurries back to his hole.
And you can function at a high, management-level job and still partake in Johnny’s namesake, trust me.

The criticism for this is kind of ridiculous. Remember he had a baby a few months ago. I’m guessing he didn’t buy a place in New York, since he was a 6th round draft pick and certainly wasn’t guaranteed to make the roster last season.
He probably rented for 2010 as well, and I’d guess he renewed around this time for 2010. So now it’s 2011. There’s no clear picture when there will be another check, he’s renting right now in NY/NJ, but his family is in Nebraska. He has a new baby, until things get settled, I don’t see the harm in living at home. The common idea of moving home is that he’s on the couch not helping out with bills or anything. But he’s got an unsettled situation and a new baby and a very close knit family.

This is criticism for no good reason at all.

Welcome to Virginia, Bassett. You might recognize me because I’m the only guy wearing a Jets hat.
