Jets Sign Holmes

by Steiny on July 27th, 2011 at 10:36 am

FOXsports.com’s Adam Schein is reporting it’s a five year deal, worth  $50 million, with approximately $24 million guaranteed.  In addition, Schein notes that Santonio left money on the table because he “Loves the Jets and Sanchez.”

As Rich Cimini points out the Jets took care of their first priority, and now they are focused on signing Nnamdi Asomugha.

UPDATE 11:36am – Adam Schefter is reporting the deal is worth $50 million.  The $24 million guaranteed, is the highest guarantee given to a WR in NFL history.

happy we got him,…. PLEASE bring in bray too. thats all i want for christmas

  2. avatar Ryan says:

    That seemed too easy

  3. avatar Tk says:

    yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  4. avatar Brendan says:

Whoops posted this in the wrong post:

“For the record, in a text last night I called a 5-year deal worth $51 mil with $30 mil guaranteed. Let’s get it.”

    Anywho, THIS IS AWESOME.

  5. we’re about to sign 2011′s two most coveted free agents… i think i’m about to order a Tannenbaum jersey

  6. avatar Zenlaw says:

How it was meant to be.

(Kindly ignore my “Negative Nancy” comment about the Skins stealing our WR’s in another thread.)

  7. avatar kennydajet says:

    YEEEESSSSS!!!! UP YOURS DAN SNYDER!!!!

Now lets get Nnamdi and Braylon

  8. avatar Jon says:

Its either the same gang green offense as last year – b.smith or Aso and just holmes. I love bray bray and i wish him the best but i just dont see it happening. I have a better feeling with getting Aso then resigning bray.

Sanchez still has Holmes, Keller, Cotch + McKnight and Kerley ( They can be great for us ).

Plus we still have our ground and pound. With Aso and Revis we would have the pass come to an absolute halt. However our run defense would need to be top notch also.

Ignore all these go for pass rusher people and get Aso!!!!

  9. avatar nyckage says:

Aww yeah, but I won’t be relieved until Friday util he can actually to sign, what’s to stop Dan Snyder to offer more money to Holmes from here to Friday.

    • avatar Bent says:

Doesn’t work like that. Once you’ve come to terms, that’s it. Filing the paperwork is a formality. This is how the NBA does it every year.

  10. avatar tyferraro says:

oh yeah baby now we need nnamdi asomugha!

    SUPER BOWL?

  11. avatar Mark "The Chosen One" Sanchez says:

Classy move by Braylon with a tweet sending congrats to Holmes. This could be a red-letter day. At least at this point we KNOW we have a playmaking WR to go with J-CO and Keller. Only the Lord and Tanny himself know what the rest of this day holds. And sign me up for a Mike T jersey as well :)

  12. I finally know what it’s like to be a Yankee fan, and it’s amazing!

  13. avatar bowlingjet says:

    Awesome! Very Happy!

  14. avatar Ed L says:

    SUCCCCEESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    bent,

now that you got terms…how does our cap situation look!!???

  15. lets not give tanny a big head he may hold out for more money lol

  16. avatar JayM says:

    TheJetsStream
I’ve been told #Jets Santonio Holmes will receive about $24 million in guaranteed money in his five-year deal. #nyj

  17. avatar RMC says:

Way to be Tanny! This is a Golden Age for Jets fans…AND IT FEELS AMAZING!

  18. avatar @Manolo_VMG says:

THANK YOU…that just made my day…next up Nmandi, then hopefully Plax. I’d rather Plax over Braylon, better hands, and better route runner, and will come cheaper.

    • avatar eric says:

oh please no plax of braylon he was just in jail for 20 months…ocho cinco is a better option or TO but he will miss some time from his surgery

      • avatar Ryan says:

TO is out for the year, or at least most of it.

      • avatar @Manolo_VMG says:

How in god’s name is 37yr old TO a better option than Plax??? I don’t want Ocho nor TO anywhere near Sanchez. Plax is/was a great teammate and never had any issues with teammates like TO and Ocho do every year, and now even with eachother.

Yea Plax just spent sometime in jail and soooo did Vick, AND HOW DID THAT WORKOUT???

        • avatar Brendan says:

Because TO had nearly 1,000 yards and 9 TDs on a horrendous team last year?

Plax a great teammate? What planet were you living on while he was on the Giants. He skipped meetings, never practiced and just showed up for games.

TO had no issues while on the Bengals, btw. And how did Vick work out in Year 1? Plax would give little return until 2012 season.

          • avatar eric says:

bingoooo michael vick had a great year 2 obv but go back and look how he did in year 1 plax will not make big contributions this year…thank you brendan

          • avatar @Manolo_VMG says:

Plax had issues with Coughlin as did Strahan, Osi, and have the players that ever played under him. You have never heard a teammate say they wouldn’t want Plax back on the jints.

TO just had surgery on his knee and may have to retire, but you must have missed that.

Vick didn’t play much his first year, but then again, he is a QB and had to learn a whole new system. It’s a lot different as a reciever coming back, every team runs the same routes, but just use different terminology. Where ever Plax goes, he will contribute immediately. TRUST.

            • avatar Brendan says:

No, I didn’t miss it, but TO is also in better shape than 95% of the NFL. He’s not a typical late-30′s WR.

Vick, if given the starting job, wouldn’t have been effective in Year 1 because he didn’t have his football speed back. Neither will Plax. A 6’5 lumbering WR with average hands and no breakaway speed is already on the roster. His name is Ramses Barden.

Oh, and those other players didn’t skip practices/meetings voluntarily and publicly butt heads with Coughlin on a regular basis. Plax did. Strahan!? He was the team leader. Plax was a good player, but never a leader.

              • avatar @Manolo_VMG says:

Ramses Barden??? are we talking about the Jets or the Giants right now? Barden is on the Giants, not the Jets. Plax never was a speedster, but had GREAT hands.

and did Strahan miss practice or meetings?? UMMMMM??? yes he did, if you remember he was pretending to contemplate retirement so he didn’t have to go thru practices and OTA’s in one of his last years with the club.

You guys are hilarious, yea lets bring over TO and Ocho, who every qb in the NFL hates, and their present QB, rather RETIRE, then play with them.

                • avatar eric says:

how are you serious right now? you cant argue with stats and production these two can be divas yes but they produce….a diva is 10x better than a man with off the field problems who shoots himself in the leg and goes to jail and has been sitting on his ass for the past 20 months

            • avatar eric says:

plax issues with coughlin were way more than strahan and osi…and why not take a chance with ochocinco over plax…hes 1 year younger and had 67 rec 831 yards and 4 tds last year..while plax was sitting in jail

  19. avatar Bob Kole says:

I think this is the payoff for taking a player that no one else wanted last year due to off field issues. 5 years, his prime years. nice.

Hope Braylon doesn’t get jail time. Or maybe he does and we get to discount his salary for time lost and make it easier to get him back.

(Would love to know what QB’s would be thinking if we got Aso!!!)

  20. avatar PA Matt says:

From ESPN: Holmes’ deal, believed to be in the $10 million-a-year range, is so big that it probably means they can’t afford to re-sign Braylon Edwards, another high-profile free agent.

Would love to see it happen just to prove them wrong.

  21. avatar Justin says:

Awesome! At least we know Tanny wasn’t goofing off the last few months!

  22. avatar alex morizio says:

i just read on espn sidebar the edwards resigned with us. is that true????

  23. avatar jetsman24 says:

that was easier than i thought. EAT IT SNYDER!

  24. avatar deuce4417 says:

they’d be thinking ouch, because there would be nowhere to throw the ball and sacks would pile up!

  25. avatar Marvel says:

    Aso!!!!!!

    Randy Moss !!!!!

    Roth !!!

    Barnes !!!

    Gregg !!

  26. avatar M EaZii says:

Niiice, even tho i wanted both tone and bray bray to come back real bad but its not happening since we are gonna sign Aso… And im so sure about this because Aso and Revis been wanting to play together since last year, remember? Tried last year but couldnt but this year its GONNA happen… But anyways, i like tone as much as i like braylon, both bring different things to the offense but both showed that they are good receivers and clutch too (tone is more clutch). Im very happy with this news, just waiting on the Aso deal and a pass rusher (seems like barnes is our guy) plus Moss, or Burress, or T.O. and we will be ready to play some football!

  27. avatar Paul says:

Sign Aso, and bring back Braylon and I’ll be thrilled.

  28. avatar MarkInIowa says:

With all the WR talent out there we should be able to pick up another WR to pair with Santonio pretty easily. With the likely suspension for his legal problems, Braylon may still be possible.

  29. avatar Bart Scott says:

Holmes “left money on the table”
REX RYAN IS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO THIS FRANCHISE SINCE SBIII.

    THANK YOU REX.

  30. avatar oakshades says:

    bray’s next.

bray loves NYC and he’ll take a decent pay cut to stay here.

  31. avatar C Low says:

If not BE then take Plax

  32. avatar Rudibager says:

I am absolutely giddy right now!

  33. avatar M EaZii says:

Hopefully, both Aso and Bray Bray leave money on the table too to play for Rex and the NY JETS! If that happens we are going to b a very dangerous team! Ahhh just fantasizing right now, lets do it Mr. T!!!!

  34. avatar tyferraro says:

HAHA this is funny on sportscenter the sidebar has been saying braylon edwards signed with the jets and not santonio…. Professionals

  35. avatar tyferraro says:

anyone have an idea how much cap space there is left after mark restructures and hunter and holmes sign?

  36. avatar Marvel says:

O yea, I’d like to give Brendan the win on this one. Holmes was not a greedy loser jerk.. I/ppl were wrong….. (but Revis was/may still be a diva lol)

    • avatar Brendan says:

Eh, not why I argued for the guy. Just hate people misrepresenting someone who is a good person, but made some mistakes, as a bad guy.

Holmes is a team-first guy who wants to win more than anything. I think leaving millions of dollars at the table should convince everyone of this truth.

    • avatar nyckage says:

Dude ofcourse Revis is a diva, nobody calls themselves the best even if they are, not even Peyton manning blatantly says he’s the best, Brady said Manning deserved to be number one on the top 100 list, Holmes is little bit of a Dive but the good kind, but Revis is a huige diva a he’s also very arrogant.

      • avatar Brendan says:

Jordan said he’s the best, he still says it.

      • avatar Brendan says:

And if he’s right, why not say it? He’s earned that right by becoming the best Cb to walk the Earth.

        • avatar nyckage says:

But dude MJ is MJ, he is his Royal Airness, you can’t use the great one in this argument, he’s at a whole another level, but yea MJ was arrogant

          • avatar Brendan says:

Revis is at a “whole other level” when it comes to CB, and football in general. When a defensive skill position player is top 5-10 players in the NFL, it’s special.

            • avatar Nick says:

Please stop now. I know your excited about Holmes, but don’t even think of comparing Revis to the greatest basketball player of all time.

Seriously, i know you like to argue (who doesn’t), but this is just a retarded argument.

              • avatar Brendan says:

That isn’t the argument. Someone is calling Revis a diva for being self-aware and calling himself the best CB in football.

I simply brought up another superstar athlete who knew he was the best and voiced it, just like Revis. I am not saying Revis, in regards to football, is better than Jordan, in regards to basketball.

          • avatar ramble914 says:

I would say Revis is the CB equivalent of MJ.

  37. avatar nyckage says:

    Hey Bent
I think we should go after Aso now, and if that fails immediately turn our attention to Braylon, not Cro. The fact is our Defense if run by Rex Ryan, Lito Sheppard played very well in Cro’s spot and he was a zone corner, the only irreplaceable guy we have is Revis. But with the Offense, we need to atleast keep status quo for Mark Sanchez at least with his options, but I personally think if we sign Braylon back that’s way to many options, Holmes, Cotchery and DK are way more than enough for Mark to take the next level, but I’m saying Bray should be a higher priority than Cro.

  38. avatar Nick says:

Were going to sign BE right arter he gets out of court. I’m telling you, he’s going to call Tanny and say “please bring me home”. Maybe he signs a one year deal for very small money….he blew his FA year with the DUI, he should just push off a big contract till next year.

  39. avatar Dylan says:

SBJLizMullen: NFLPA memo to agents: $120.4M salary cap per club is “soft cap.” Allows clubs to exceed cap in cash spent.

  40. avatar oakshades says:

BENT I NEED A CAP UPDATE ASAP.

  41. avatar Jon says:

On espn it says Braylon Edwards agrees to terms with jets… I may be dumb but what does that mean?

  42. How about Roy Williams maybe a change to the jets will help make him what he could be a tall strong receiver hey look what they said about BE and he made out ok.

  43. someone told me that if Santonio gets busted for marijuana again that means a 1 year suspension… is that true?

    • avatar Bent says:

Yes, but I’m sure the Jets recoup any bonus money if that happens (and they wouldn’t have to pay him any salary for that year)

  44. avatar M EaZii says:

Bent do you think its realistic to say that we have what it takes to sign both Aso and Bray Bray?

  45. avatar SackDance99 says:

What’s not to like about this signing? Holmes gets less than market value, the Jets still have $$$ to go after Aso, sign Bray and get that elusive pass rusher. If Aso signs for less than market value and Bray does too (as he said he would), then there really is a “Rex effect” and that means that the Jets will get more value out of their cap money. That’s a huge competitive advantage going forward for this franchise.

For the record, I still think signing Braylon should be a priority over Aso, but if Aso is willing to sign for Cro money, then the Jets have to pull the trigger.

    • avatar Bart Scott says:

I’d sign Aso before a top flight pash rusher. Aso systemically gives you a two for one pash rush vs an expensive top tier pash rusher where you would still have a less reliable corner in the secondary.

Sign Aso and we can worry about the LeBron v Wade Miami Heat ego thing later

      • avatar SackDance99 says:

Fact is there isn’t a top pass rusher on the market, while Aso might be the 2nd best CB in the NFL. I see signing Aso as a target of opportunity. If say, DeMarcus Ware were available, I think even Brendan would agree that above Holmes, Aso, Bray and any other 100 UFAs out there, Ware would be the guy for the Jets to target. An elite pass rusher would raise the Jets D to an 85 Bears level. Since Aso is a Ware-type of elite defensive player, I think he’s a priority, but even if he’s signed, the Jets will still need a pass rusher. On the other hand, if a guy like Ware was available and could be signed, an average DB could play the #2 CB and the Jets would still lead the NFL in pass D.

  46. avatar C Low says:

Tanny is the best cap manipulating GM in the NFL. Given all of the GM’s limited time to structure FA and cap rom, Tanny is ahead of the curve.

Now that we have Holmes lets get Aso. He gives Rex 13 guys on defense, makes the opponent extremely predictable, and can bring the kitchen sink from any direction. It will be like the Jets/Pats playoff game only more confusing for the opponent. Rex would be dialing in on every play.

  47. avatar Dylan says:

I think Braylon is probably gone, but we will see. Its easy to forget that we already have an above average #2 receiver on the roster.

  48. avatar kennydajet says:

Tanny Jersey would out sell T Tebow LOL
I sent a tweet last night to @santonio10 to take the offer on the table and keep the flight boys together and the Redskins dont have a QB lol (maybe it worked)
I just sent a tweet to @officialbraylon that hes up next lets make it happen lollll

  49. yaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  50. avatar OldGuyJetFan says:

I’m now convinced that Edwards stays too, Brad Smith goes, Cro goes and we get Nnamdi.

Where is the Superbowl this year, gonna make Hotel reservations now!

  51. avatar Ryan says:

Has there been any talk on who the Jets migh cut? There is definitely some dead cap space to be cleared(Bryan Thomas…)

  52. avatar Bart Scott says:

DAMN, Pats on Aso’s tail as well. It’s as if they have no choice. They can’t let Jets get Revis and Aso so they are gunning hard for Aso. Inaddition if they don’t land Aso at least they drive up his cost. (I’m a Met fan but now know what it’s like to be a Yank fan with Red Sox trying to block signings.)

    • avatar nyckage says:

It would make sense if they are trying to get Aso to keep him away from us, but he simply does not fit there system, they play a zone dominant system, so it’s probably just to drive up the price so we may lose interest.

    • avatar cmart28 says:

If the Jets can make the Patriots overpay Aso so they can’t address their pass rush or lock up Mankins long term, I’m all for it. Aso doesn’t help the Pats as much as they’d be paying him other than the fact that they’d keep him off the Jets, who he’d help much more.

  53. avatar Brendan says:

    “TheJetsStream Manish Mehta
How badly does @Santonio10 Holmes want to win another SB? Well, he turned down more $$ from another team to sign w/ #Jets, per source. #nyj”

    The defense rests.

    You’re up, Braylon.

  54. avatar cmart28 says:

The big negative about $10 million for Holmes instead of $8 million for Edwards is that, unless the Jets go with a cheap 1 year corner this year, and then go in house with Wilson at corner and Lowery and Cole behind him, there will need to be more money cut at LB.

Thomas this year is obvious, but I think Pace gets cut after this year now, saves 2.3 million next year (about the difference between Holmes and Edwards) and over 9.5 million the year after according to nyjetscap. It’s also even more possible now that Scott gets cut (saves 4.35 million for 2012, then 8.65 and 8), or at least gets cut 2 years from now.

    • avatar Brendan says:

You’re looking at 2012!? Hahah comeeeeeee on bruh. Let’s get through this week first.

      • avatar cmart28 says:

I know, I know, but signings are never made with just 1 year in mind. Sanchez getting less money this year after restructuring to make this work, combined with Holmes making more than Edwards would, has huge ramifications on 2012. Jets will pretty much be forced to work exclusively from the nickel, with Wilkerson, Ellis, Pouha, DeVito, Harris, and probably their 1st round pick this year up front in 2012 if they need to cut Pace and Scott.

  55. avatar nyckage says:

Oh and Redskins got one of our “coveted” FA, Kellen Clemens, oh cruel world, why did you let this happen, how will we make the playoffs now????

  56. avatar CG says:

great job, now lets get Aso!

  57. avatar sublime says:

Bent is it possible to add Adam schefter to the twitter feed on this site I know its not only jets news but he seems to get news first

  58. avatar Dylan says:

This is a great time to be a Jets fan. As crazy as it sounds, I honestly believe that we can sign basically any player we want as long as we have the cap space. This team has it all right now. A super bowl caliber roster, an incredible coach who players love playing for, a genius for a GM, and maybe the largest market in the NFL. Signing Rex could end up being the best move Tanny ever made. The guy completely changed the culture around here.

    • avatar Yo yo says:

All the Jets have done so far is re-signed Holmes which they were expecting to. RELAX PEOPLE!

I still would be surprised if Aso came here. If he got more than Revis then I can see Revis holding out again. It’s worse than Miami Heat because Wade and Bron were both making the max.

  59. avatar jsa says:

Great signing, very glad we keep Holmes.

Though I hope there’s some clause inthe contract protecting the Jets if Holmes gets another suspension.

  60. avatar oakshades says:

my clients are gonna be so disappointed with my production today.

  61. avatar BrayBray17 Fan says:

Forget Nnnamdi and sign Bray. Once we do that THEN we can start talking about Asomugha which as I’ve said before would be a LUXURY to have on our team NOT a neccessity. BRAY BRAY BRAY!!

  62. avatar cmart28 says:

Well, by the evening, we’ll know if Edwards is joining him. If Edwards’ hearing doesn’t go well, I think he ends up back on the Jets for a very cheap deal. If nothing happens he’s out of their price range.

  63. avatar Jake D. says:

    Bent,

I wanna know YOUR thoughts on signing Aso.

What do you think? Do we have enough cap space to sign him? What are the chances we sign him? If they do sign him, how much do you think his contract/salary will be?

  64. avatar oakshades says:

i think that bray is going to do everything he can do to stay a Jet. He went from CLE to NYC. He wants to be a star, and this is where he can do it. He’s been to Greenhouse post Jet victory, he knows that no city is competing with NYC. He’s not making the same mistake LBJ made.

  65. avatar MachoKing says:

    OHHHHHH YEAAAAA!!! DIG IT !!

    Sign Braylon and Namndhi….

and the Beat goes on and the Beat goes on !!

  67. avatar NamVetJet says:

Thinking they should do free agency like this all the time—-better than draft day.

  68. avatar OldRich says:

Guess this overshadows the Wayne Hunter signing. But, why is Kellen Clemens going to Washington the top story?

  69. avatar revis christ says:

  71. avatar Tim Cowlisher says:

    JETS SIGNED ASO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  72. avatar Tim Cowlisher says:

    …..i think…..maybe

  73. avatar Bernie says:

That is too much $$ for a WR with a high risk of drug suspension. Plus we now have far less $$ to address the pass rush, which is still the difference between getting to a SB or not.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Okay, rewind 5 hours. You now have $10 mil in cash. What are you doing to fix the pass rush with it?

This money was as well spent as you could have asked for.

      • avatar Bernie says:

Well, I would rewind 3 months and actually *draft* a pass rusher, or two or three. But what’s done is done. If we can’t make a trade, then we wait until next year. Why tie up ridiculous money in a very good, but not great, WR, when that is not even close to our greatest need? Cotchery is solid and Braylon probably could’ve been had for much less. Santonio Holmes is not Jerry Rice, or even Andre Johnson. Simply not worth that type of contract. When Brad and Cro both walk, we will have taken a big step backward as a team, IMO.

        • avatar Brendan says:

I suggest you look at the market value for a top-tier WR (which is what Holmes is), then remember that Braylon is facing suspension.

Holmes is making the franchise value for a WR for the next 5 seasons. By the time his contract nears its end the franchise value will have raised considerably. Overpay a bit in the beginning to get a net savings over the 5 years. Good business, and a good deal.

And if you seriously are trying to say the team will suffer as a result of paying Holmes and not Brad Smith, than I guess this discussion is pointless.

  74. avatar C Low says:

    David Clowney

  75. avatar Bart Scott says:

Does Holmes get his guaranteed money if he gets a third strike?

  76. avatar Jeff Dolfini says:

How could we possibly have 20 million in cap space after we just overpaid for Holmes? 10 million a year are you kidding me? How did he take a pay cut?

    • avatar Brendan says:

Market value. He had bigger offers on the table.

And they have a ton of cap space if they need it, it’s literally a matter of making a phonecall and restructuring some deals.

      • avatar Nick says:

I don’t understand why other GM’s don’t do this as much as the Jets do….

        • avatar nyckage says:

well they probably do, we only follow and know about Mike T, probably Pats fans look very highly on Bill Belichick, Ravens fan probably think Ozzie Newsome is the best GM in the Galaxy, same with Falcons fans with Dimitrof, there are alot of good GM’s out there and Mike T is one of them

    • avatar Bent says:

17m under as of yesterday not including Harris
      6.5m possible incentives
      7.5m if they restructure Sanchez

That’s 31m. Less 5m for Hunter and the rookies leaves 22m.

Harris will cost about 6 or 7m in year one, leaving over 15m for Bray/Cro or Aso which could leave them with 5m

Attitude and NE Pats roots aside, he coulddddd be good as a red zone target, opening santonio, but still.

Anyone hearing anything about Plax & the Giants? If we lose Bray, I’d rather have Plax than Moss.

Agreed. PS – hearing Jets ready to offer Nnamdi 12 mil per. Others will offer 14.5 per. I know its millions but thats not toooooo much to come play for rex/contend is it?

Also, as the name suggests here, I’d love to sure up Diggz on the cheap for Special Teams/run packages…solid/big hitter

Lombardi on NFL network said expect Nnamdi to be signed somewhere within 8 hours. Buckle up people.

  84. Awesome. If we can sign Aso, Bray and Barnes, the jury should rest (even for Hank) that Tanny is truly an amazing GM (of course the Rex effect makes it easier on Tanny, but still gotta give the man his credit).

via SI’s Peter King: “I think the Jets and Nnamdi Asomugha is a real story. For those who think the cap would prohibit it, understand this: The Jets could let free agents Antonio Cromartie and Braylon Edwards walk — those two would be $10 million to $12 million on the cap, potentially, in 2011 — and they could re-do the contracts of Mark Sanchez and Darrelle Revis, and they could whittle linebacker David Harris’ 2011 cap hit from $10 million to about $7 million by turning his one-year deal into a multiyear contract. If you don’t think Rex Ryan is pushing for this, you’re crazy.”

      My. Dear. God.
