Jets Looking to Trade?

by Steiny on July 31st, 2011 at 5:55 pm

Interesting.

I wonder who the Jets are dangling.  My guess would be Bryan Thomas who counts for $3.7 million against the cap.

Thoughts?  Who do you think the Jets are looking to trade?

trade? for cap room?! we had enough cap room to sign aso, but not enough for cro?! i’m confused.

    • avatar Ben Nevis says:

Oh, yeah, we must be shopping around Nick Folk. . .

Seriously, though, the FO already created tons of cap room by restructuring the contracts of half a dozen players, and we were already millions under the cap BEFORE that.

The FO would have to be out of its friggin mind to trade Thomas—who do we have to replace him?!

      • avatar Bent says:

Per Jason, the Jets may have cancelled the paycuts, because they were contingent on getting Nnamdi.

In any case, there were only three. The original reports that Brandon Moore restructured were false. Sanchez’ renegotiation was placed on the backburner. Scott, Pace and LT reportedly agreed to paycuts, but the Jets would have had to file the paperwork on Friday at 6pm, but which time they were out of the running for Asomugha, so some or all of these may not have been processed.

        • avatar wunky says:

But Plan B had to be signing Cromartie and a WR, so why wouldn’t they still file the paperwork to free up the space to get the players they would still eventually need to get once Aso went to Philly.

          • avatar Bent says:

Maybe they still did, but it could be that these players volunteered a paycut to facilitate getting Aso only.

            • avatar Ben Nevis says:

              Bent—

if the players only agreed to restructure on the condition that we sign Aso, that’s still the FO’s fault for not framing the conditions properly, not communicating to the players that we’d seriously need cap space even if we didn’t sign Aso.

              • avatar wunky says:

Unless their Plan B was another player that got away while waiting on Aso.

                • avatar Ben Nevis says:

                  wunky—

Still would’ve needed cap space to sign that hypothetical Plan B player.

If the Jets trade away someone like Bryan Thomas just to clear cap space—especially after giving a GUARANTEED 3 mil to a guy who’s been out of football for TWO YEARS—then this whole thing will stink of mismanagement.

              • avatar Bent says:

I’m sure they did, but maybe they wouldn’t have agreed to the paycuts if it was just to facilitate getting Cromartie.

The Jets do have some other options to create cap room, but seem focused on creating current year cap room rather than deferring cap money into next year. I’m sure there’s a reason for that.

      • avatar green says:

        Where is diggZ?!!!!!

    • avatar Matt says:

I’m going to assume that’s because initially we were all in on Aso with eyes on a WR who would go for less than Plax

      • avatar Ben Nevis says:

        Matt—

Well, that three million spent on Plax is without a doubt the riskiest move the FO has made in quite some time, even riskier than going into last season with Folk as our kicker.

To pay 3 mil to a 34-year old guy who’s been out of football for TWO YEARS is just friggin nuts. Especially when there were much preferable alternatives, like (best choice) Braylon, or (second choice) James Jones, or Floyd.

        • avatar Brendan says:

It’s only $3 million. It’s not that risky at all. If you want to say it’s “the riskiest $3 million”, fine. But it’s not that risky. If it doesn’t work it doesn’t hurt the team in the long run. If it does work they have the inside track at bringing him back next season.

          • avatar Ben Nevis says:

            Brendan

It’s a GUARANTEED three million—that’s just stupid. Not even an incentive-laced deal for a guy who may take the better part of a season, if not an entire season, to get back into the speed of the game.

And as far as hurting the team, the damage has already been done: the FO let Braylon walk. The guy who had the fewest drops in our WR corps last year, the guy who was clutch, the guy who carried two DBs on his back for ten yards into the endzone, the guy who is first truly solid TALL receiver we’ve had since Keyshawn.

Yes, I’m happy with the rest of the team—a great draft, great to have Bluntonio back–the only question marks right now (besides Plax) are at safety (we need a solid cover safety, but I don’t think the FO is going to spring for one), and CB (if we don’t sign Cro), and kicker & punter, just because they are unknown quantities (I’m assuming Folk doesn’t win the job, but, hey, you never know). And of course, as you know, it would be great to have a solid pass rusher.

But if the team trades away Thomas, then who in the world do they think is gonna replace him?

            • avatar wunky says:

I get that not signing Plax would allow us to bring back Cro, but signing Edwards would mean starting Wilson at CB, and probably not having enough money for a few other guys we signed.

              • avatar Ben Nevis says:

                wunky—

With all the cap space we cleared, I find that diificult to believe. But the point is there were several other preferable options to Plax—and not one of those other WRs had been OUT OF THE GAME FOR TWO YEARS.

                • avatar wunky says:

Agreed on Plax — we’ll have to hope he’s in great shape somehow. I was just thinking about how signing Bray, Holmes AND Cro was not likely.

            • avatar wunky says:

also, I think Plaxico is a few inches taller than Edwards. but I agree with you that he’s a major risk.

Thing is, I think people are forgetting about/not thinking about Cotchery, who says he is feeling better than he has in years. He’s 29 and if he can play like he did a few years back before he suffered the herniated his disc in that MNF game in 2009, everything will be fine and dandy at WR whether Plax is 100% or not.

              • avatar Ben Nevis says:

                wunky—

Yes, I agree about JCo, and if the choice was between signing Plax or trading Bryan Thomas for cap space, hands down I’d keep Thomas. Wouldn’t even have considered Plax—especially not for a GUARATEED 3 mil!

              • avatar miketaliaferro says:

                I [Heart] Ben Nevis—

I also hope & pray that Plax is NOT the stiff he may well prove to be.

To toss in $3 million guaranteed on a player sight unseen, is total business folly. You no longer can cry poverty from that point on. This off-season is all on Tanny now.

What galls me: If Plax had even done the simple Workout tour and shown the NFL what he had, I’d feel a tad better than I do. Tanny/Rex would have had SOME idea of what they were buying. But, of COURSE, his agent wouldn’t let that happen in a million years. I wouldn’t either. If it showed he could only run a 5.9 40, or had no wind, his future was shot. Better to be the Man of Mystery: “Do I have anything left? Do I not have anything left? Why don’t you bid against each other until I land somewhere, and Hey! We’ll all find out together!”

                • avatar Brendan says:

He has been working out with NFL players since June.

                  • avatar Ben Nevis says:

                    Brendan—

Come on, man, you know that “working out with players” is no substitute for real-time game experience. Plax is 34, and the last time he had that real-time, game-speed experience, it was three long years ago. This guaranteed 3 mil is just plain stupid risky.

                    • avatar Ben Nevis says:

And it’s especially stupid if we wind up having to trade someone like Bryan Thomas just to create cap space—space that’s being eaten up by that guaranteed 3 mil.

                    • avatar Brendan says:

It means he’s in shape. He admitted rust will be there, but he’s a 6’5″ receiver who has been working out for almost 2 months.

I’m not worried about his stamina or his motivation. He’s simply got to shake off that rust and even if he lost a step he’ll be a big target that will pull down balls in the red zone for Sanchez. For all the talk of Braylon’s size and strength I only remember him doing that once, in the Pats game (where he got the 15-yard penalty for dancing in the DB’s face).

                    • avatar Ben Nevis says:

                      Bendan—

RUST? Are you kidding me, RUST? There is, as you know, a HUGE difference between being in shape and being in football shape. This is not about stamina, this is not about his size, or being able to get up in the air–it’s about having the game-speed quickness and instincts to get into POSITION to go up in the air and get the ball. This is the NFL, my friend, not some kiddie came down the street. It’s not enough to be in shape, or to be tall, or to be working out—you have to be able to move within a split-second window, get position, and be able to focus while some of the best athletes in the world are trying to stop you from doing your job. And when you’ve been away from the game for TWO LONG YEARS, the likelihood that you’re gonna be able to compete within the first four game back, or the first eight games back, or even the first sixteen games back, is just not very high.

                    • avatar Brendan says:

                      Jesus, Ben. Relax.

Plaxico was incredibly gifted at getting off the line. His first step and ability to sell routes (mental skills as much as they are physical) were a major part of what sent him apart.

He was never a burner, he rarely ran past people. His routes got him open and into space. So when I talk rust, I talk route-running, mainly.

Can Plax shake off rust enough to be a crisp route-runner by Week 1? Yes, I believe he can. He’s motivated, in shape and spoke today about how he has thought about this every day for 2 years.

And you’re acting like this $3 million, which is less than 3% of the cap, is worth getting this worked up over. It’s not, not when the potential of an all-pro player is there.

                    • avatar Bent says:

Per Plax himself via Cimini, the Jets had to outbid five other teams. I expect that’s why it’s higher than expected.

                    • avatar Ben Nevis says:

                      Brendan—

If this GUARANTEED 3 mil to a 34 year old guy who’s been out of the game for TWO YEARS–an ex-con who not only shot himself in the leg, but also was brilliant enough to imagine that the band on his sweatpants would support the weight of a gun—if this GUARANTEED 3 mil forces the FO to trade someone like Bryan Thomas just to clear some cap space, this will go down in Jets history as one of the biggest bone-headed moves the FO has made under Mike T.

                  • avatar wunky says:

Thing is, no one has played real-time game experience in seven months, so I don’t think the extra time away is a major factor, if he has been working out the same way as everyone else the last two months. The five months before most of these guys were doing less than Plax in prison.

                  • avatar Brendan says:

                    Ben,

                    It’s $3 million. That’s it. It’s guaranteed for one season. It’s not a risk.

                    • avatar Ben Nevis says:

                      Brendan—

If the GUARANTERD 3 mil forces the FO to trade someone like Bryan Thomas just to create cap space, it’s not just 3 mil—it’s sheer, almost breath-takingly obvious stupidity.

                    • avatar Brendan says:

If they trade someone it’s because they want to, not because they have to.

                    • avatar Ben Nevis says:

Got to run out to work now, so will have to leave it there for a while.

Brendan & Bent & mike, It’s always fun to exchange with you. And it was fun exchanging with you too, wunky (I believe for the first time).

                    • avatar wunky says:

not the first time. Been away from the site for a year. Back under a new name.

          • avatar miketaliaferro says:

            Brendan,

I love you like a Jets fan, brother, but I and some others here have had that same crap tossed at us when it suited them to do so.

When I & others argued for keeping Leon or Thomas Jones and paying them their worth (as per their contract), Whoa! The sky fell—the thrust being: “How can you pay that extra money when you don’t know what you’re going to get back for it, and those dollars are the VERY greenbacks that are keeping us from addressing other needs around the field!” Same diff here, amigo. Every move Tanny has made has be intense cap moves, desperately fitting that contract or this contract under our cap. Cut, trade, slash, just to get things done.

Then he goes out and tosses $3 million to someone he never even saw work out???? You nor Tanny nor he have any earthly idea of what he has left, if anything. And if at the end of camp, it’s clear to everyone that Plax has lost his fastball, we’re on the hook for the FULL 3 MILL!

who would even be avaliable lol. bryan thomas?

  4. avatar njdpelc says:

Something has to be up. We have plenty of cap room.

  5. avatar PerfectPAT says:

while if we’ve learned anything this week, it’s that the experts know nothing…. this troubles me with the stink of desperation and lack of confidence in wilson.

  6. avatar JasonH says:

    Amen to that bubba.

  7. avatar Neal says:

The only player I think would be worth trading is BT.

  8. avatar Dobermite says:

We had all off season and a lockout to prepare for free agency, and now we’re frantically trying to trade players so we can re-sign our own corner?

It should be fun to hear the usual homers spin this one.

  9. avatar Jesse says:

    I dont trust this nerd.

  10. avatar Machoking says:

I don’t get it … so we are trading a player for a pick ? We got Holmes for a 5th …. what do we expect to do here ?

And what about signing an OLB ? I heard Manny Lawson or Roth ?

  11. avatar Shane L. says:

This is a head shaker to put it nicely. We better not do anything stupid but it seems inevitable.

  12. avatar Marvel says:

You guys do know resigning players costs money right…

I’d sacrifice Thomas for a Cro/Lawson combo, but at this point I don’t think the Jets and I are on the same page. I’ll see what happens.

    • avatar J-Kay says:

I’d take Lawson over Thomas regardless

    • avatar Mark "The Chosen One" Sanchez says:

I agree and I wish more people understood that they don’t know what the team plans on doing right now. Some people just want what they want, funny thing is they didn’t even know they wanted it before Tanny/Rex showed them what it was.
Rex/Tanny/Staff made this team! Just in case anyone forgot.

  13. avatar booskie24 says:

i think they’re looking at other options instead of signing Cro…thats just my guess. probably making sure there arent other options since cro’s agent is doucher!!!

  14. avatar Dobermite says:

BTW if you want the translation of what happened here it is very simple. Cromartie is making Rex & Tannenbaum pay the wazoo after they tried to kick him to the curb for Nnamdi, and who can blame him, anyone would do the same if their bosses tried to kick them to the curb, failed, then decided to keep you. I have no doubt Cromartie is flatout raping Rex and Tanny right now, asking for so much they have to unload players to make it happen.

    • avatar ToddtoBarkum says:

I am afraid that you may be right, Cro, I’m sure is pissed.

      • avatar jets1974 says:

I’m pissed that Cromartie discounted taking a hometown discount after the Jets forwarded him $500,000 last year to pay child support.

    • avatar Brendan says:

And this shows how fair-weather of a fan you really are. The team is never held hostage by a player since Tanny took over. Not even Revis.

    • avatar Dobermite says:

By the time Cromartie gets through with Rex and Tanny, he’s gonna impregnate the both of them and have two more kids.

      • avatar Brendan says:

You sound like a little kid thrown a tantrum because he didn’t get his way. Grow up, Peter Pan.

      • avatar Tuco says:

        best comment ever!

      • avatar patd says:

Dudes Cro is gone. The jets aren’t over paying for him. There are other and better options. If the jets are making a trade it isn’t to keep Cro. Cro is gone.

        • avatar wunky says:

Money talks, and we’ll (at this point) be the last team standing to offer him anything close to what he thought he was getting. He’ll sign and tweet something stupid along the lines of how he knew all along he was staying and was just playing games.

      • avatar Lush Greenery says:

Still crying over Bray Bray? You must watch selective highlights. Cro is an ungrateful knucklehead and Braylon just ain’t that good. They need to tell him to go scratch. Good luck in Oakland where Jason Campbell will make sure he earns his dough by keeping him on the field constantly. He’ll be too tired to procreate anymore, which on second thought,is doing the world a favor. #AmericasBabyDaddy

    • avatar Marvel says:

Remember when we fronted him a cool million ? Oh ok..

Aso is better than Cro, we went after the better player first, if a grown man can’t understand that…too bad

    • avatar jets1974 says:

      Oh please.

Cromartie is the one who said he wouldn’t take a hometown discount in the first place. This, after the Jets forwarded him $500,000 last year to help him avoid going to jail for unpaid child support.

Cromartie set the tone for this — not the Jets.

    • avatar armchairprof says:

Now look, that maybe feasible on the Jets front office. But not on other teams that are looking at him. And if the Tanny knows that no other team will pay the Jet-ransom, why should he?

  15. avatar ToddtoBarkum says:

Don’t like the sound of this. What happened to all of the players that want to play for Rex?

  16. Tomasj — You’re a disgrace to Jets fan, shush please.

  17. avatar jets1974 says:

    Clayton doesn’t know shi/t!!!!

This is the same Clayton who spent weeks telling us that the Jets were $1.2 million over the cap, only to find out they were $10 million under the cap after signing Holmes.

Clayton has to be one of the most overrated “insiders” there are.

  18. avatar JetMetVet says:

Who’s vulnerable here for trade potentially? Whats Cotchery getting paid this year? Keller? I hate to even think of these possibilities….We did just secure a few WR spots…

  19. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

i bet the jets trade brian thomas & 6th 5rd pick for asante samuels, eagles and jets always do buisness together.

  20. avatar jets1974 says:

Shefter: There is an 80% chance that Clayton is right. There is also an 80% chance that Claton is wrong.

  21. avatar Machoking says:

Interesting idea but would trading for someone with a contract like Asante help out cap situation ?

I thought they were doing it to clear money so they can sign…

    • avatar Shane L. says:

Samuel only has like 5.8M cap hit this season so he’d be much cheaper than Cro. Only thing is he can’t play man coverage. His whole career he’s been able to sit back, let the front 7 pressure the QB into a bad throw, then pounce for the pick. He’d be burned alive in our system.

  22. avatar Shifty says:

GOOD GOD.. can we chill the hell out?? We’re trading for cap space because from the looks if it, we’ll have enough money to nail Cro and some fillers, and THAT’S IT. You don’t want to sit at 119 million with a 120 million dollar cap… who do you think we’re trading? Revis? Mangold? Get real, we’re most likely looking to see if we can trade someone like Bryan Thomas instead of having dead money if we cut him.. and in all likelihood, we’ll have even more cap room once David Harris gets his longterm deal next week.. don’t forget, he’s sitting at a 10 million dollar hit right now.

    Just relax.. we’ll be fine.

  23. avatar jets1974 says:

    Trade Schotty.

  24. yes i agree john clayton is wrong all the time……i bet there is trade chatter in the backround but its a trade that gets the jets better this season

  25. who would trade anything for brian thomas? a serviceable, but old linebacker. last i checked mangini aint around anymore.

i honestly dont believe anything these turd reporters say. i swear they make crap up just so people follow them on twitter.

  26. avatar Private Jet says:

oh well, there’s always next season.

  27. avatar Zartan says:

I think it may be J-Co. Why they sign Plax is perplexing .

  28. avatar kc. says:

I think MOST of you above are TOTALLY overreacting! Thomasj first comment is just absolutely ridiculous. So what were trying to TRADE someone?? As far as I’m concerned,it could be Ellis OR Thomas traded.

  29. avatar Jetsfan29 says:

Wouldn’t it be funny if the jets traded comartie and a scone round pick for nnamdi!? Yes it would never happen just think it would be funny!

  30. avatar kem pa sote says:

Its just to have more cap space even if we sign cro.they could be preparing for players cut by other teams or trades that’s about to happen.on who I think it is it could be jco or bt.fast forwarding to next off-season how much cap space will we have after we cut or release these players am gonna do it by numbers 36,57,99,97,89,21, 36 contract expires at season end. This off-season sucks that bad am looking forward to next year

  31. avatar jets0906 says:

I guess you all forgot how to Do math over the lockout as well. Yes we had 10 mil in cap space. We then signed Strickland. Burress. Brunell. Smith and digs. To sum iT up we no longer have a ton if cap space. Also with the asante thing. Rex will adjust accordingly to his personnel.

  32. avatar Shane L. says:

KC and jetsfan29 what the hell are you 2 talking about? We can’t trade Ellis or Cro since neither of them are under contract lol.

  33. avatar TOON2388 says:

cut BT – he is a steady player – we need more than a steady player at OLB in this scheme

And guys – do not pay attention to the media’s “opinions” – these are guys that do not know anymore than we do and I will say they know LESS than we do about our favorite team because they have to try and know 32 teams!

Anybody want to be me that Peter King fawns over the Ocho & Haynesworth moves NE made? If it were any other team he would tell you how it is not going to work.

  34. do we really need this guy that bad ??? go with wilson and give him safety help.

See, this stuff didn’t happen before the past two seasons. The fair-weather fans who forget how bad things can be now expect perfection 24/7. It’s just not realistic.

And when people come here to talk about the demise of our favorite team simply because an unfinished offseason/free agent signing period hasn’t worked out the way they wanted it, we take offense.

            • avatar Joe says:

Yea i get it trust me ive been on this site for years and i used to be a seaon ticket holder. Just turning on other fans get you no where is all im saying so ignore them and move on.

people are definitely getting a little carried away. hasnt even been a week since the nfl is back. all i’m sayin is “in Tanny/rex i trust”. we are not finished, whether its more signings or a trade, i’m sure Trader Mikes wheels are spinning at hyper-speed right now. be patient….

              • avatar juunit says:

I agree that everyone’s entitled to their opinions. But there’s still lots of premium guys available, the roster isn’t set in stone yet. As far as all the people complaining know, we’re about to trade for Antonio Gates and Demarcus Ware. Would the offseason still be a failure then? (Obviously, not very realistic, but the point is the same.)

      • avatar Zartan says:

No , we Jet fans have always been babies , we don’t want to go back to losing.

  36. avatar Jason says:

Few candidates- Lowery, Thomas, Wilson, and Id think an outside chance of Slauson and Cotchery.

  37. avatar Gtojets says:

I think we my be able to package Thomas and picks to get a big time 3-4 pass rusher

    • avatar boogie down says:

But how would that address our apparently rabid desire to re-sign Cromartie?

I know that that would make our D more formidable (assuming we got a legitimately good pass rusher), but it still doesn’t confront Cromartie one way or the other, and that’s allegedly the purpose of this maneuver.

      • avatar patd says:

If the jets had a rapid desire to sign Cro it would have been done. Cro is gone. Just because it is reported doesn’t make it true. The reports on Aso never mentioned the Eagles

        • avatar Brendan says:

          Can’t wait until he resigns.

        • avatar boogie down says:

It was also reported that we are looking to make a trade. If you are asserting Cro is gone, which he very well may be, are you saying that the search for trade possibilities is also a falsehood that is being mistakenly reported as fact?

If not, how can you put faith in one part of a report while questioning the veracity of another without anything definitive either way?

          • avatar patd says:

What I say isn’t based on any report but the teams needs and their past history. I say Cro is gone because we are not going to pay him what a team like Oakland will. Also if we trade for a pass rusher we won’t need Cro. I never understood the need to get Aso. Go after a premium pass rusher if you want to win a super bowl. Pressure on the QB is what stops the passing game.

  38. avatar tomg says:

OH MY GOD!!! THE EARTH IS BREAKING UP!!!! I swear some of you fans sound like dolphin fans, it’s unbelievable.

  39. avatar zack says:

  40. avatar Nnamdi says:

    8===============D~~~~~~

  41. avatar juunit says:

Keller and Thomas for a pass rushing OLB and sign Zach Miller who is at least twice the TE Keller is.

  42. which 3-4 pass rushers do u think would be available for trade?

  43. avatar Bklyn Tay says:

I would let Cro walk go sign Carlos Rogers decent cover guy and he would be half the price and then go get a pass rushing olb

  44. avatar Seanymakk says:

These reporters jump the gun so they are credited for bein the 1st one to report it.. I doubt they are trading for cap space, if they are trading its to make the team better, not a salary dump.. Man i wish we were smart like the texans, joseph would look pretty nice in green/white.. I really dont want that scum Cro back, ever since his comment bout the no hometown discount i really dont like him.. We helped him when he was just another broke hoodrat..now we need a corner and hes goin to get paid alot more then hes worth.. Hopefully they trade for a good pash rusher

    • avatar wunky says:

No GM calls these guys, their sources are ex-GMs or ex-execs who give their opinion on the situation, they poke around and hope to get a clue from a current GM or exec, but only are told what those people want them to hear, quite obviously. If I was a GM or exec and John Clayton emailed me, I’d write back what I wanted the other GMs to hear.

  45. avatar tomg says:

It’s possible the jets realize that Cromartie wants to much and have decided to look to trade for a corner back. It’s hard to believe the jets had 10 mil in cap room and enough to pay ASO but now they need to clear cap room, doesn’t make sense. I do believe though the wilson isn’t the answer, I didn’t like what I saw from him last year.

  46. avatar mike says:

trade or release thomas and sign lawson/roth to replace him. combine that with bringing westerman in on passing downs to attack the middle along with pace and one of the above mentioned and we should be good. why is more cap room needed we apparently cleared so much for nnamdi. is cody brown any good as an OLB? he’s hanging on our roster

  47. avatar Machoking says:

Trading Cotchery is a horrible idea. Do you guys think Plax is going to come in and just be our #2 ? We absolutely NEED Cotchery..

I would think the trade is about picking up some picks and clearing some space. Maybe a 6th fro BT or Slauson to the Giants cause I’m not sure they even have a line this season.

  48. avatar joey the jet says:

they probably gonna trade revis to the ebars for vernon gholston lmao

  49. this has disaster written all over it.

  50. avatar joey the jet says:

    *bears

  51. avatar TheRealRK says:

Its a tweet from John Clayton, so assume the complete opposite, meaning other teams are probably calling the Jets for trades because the Jets have so much cap room.

    • avatar Bent says:

If the Jets are creating cap room, it’s obviously not just for Cro…otherwise why would they have reached out to any other players (Heap, Ellis, etc). This would suggest that if any of those signings happened, the Jets would suddenly have to find even more cap room!

It seems like they have plenty of flexibility, so are perhaps maintaining cap equality by creating room for each move as they go.

  52. avatar joey the jet says:

i would trade slausson to the giants for osi to play olb for us

  53. avatar C Low says:

Is this a bluff that we have no money left since Cro’s agent knew how much we had during the Aso negotiations?

How the hell do we re-sign Brunell the same day we look to free up cap room?

Nothing make sense. I smell a bluff. I think Jets are trying to smoke out Raqiders and make them wait since their training camp started days before the Jets today

  54. avatar C Low says:

A tweet from John Clayton….lol. He just re-activated his twitter account two days ago. His last post was last february

  55. avatar neauone says:

It could be a WR or TE that they are dangling. Keller is a value as is Cotchery, another piece could be Shonn Greene. I mean really what is the value of a B.T.? It would have to be someone of value.

  56. avatar Ferraro41 says:

John Clayton is an idiot. Is it maybe possible that the Jets are dangling some players for reasons that have nothing to do with Cromartie? Like maybe finding a pass rusher? Or maybe getting some additional secondary depth? Or maybe finding a safety?

  57. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

i heard braylon have a 4 yr deal lined up with the bills.

  58. avatar Marvel says:

Nate Clements got 2 years 10 mill… *Sigh

  59. avatar jets1974 says:

Or maybe, just maybe, Clayton is wrong.

Wouldn’t be the first time. Wouldn’t be the last time.

  60. avatar jets0906 says:

We arent dangling keller, get that out of your head, even cotchery for that matter.

  61. avatar war machine says:

Wake me up when we sign a pass rush…

  62. avatar Wesleywalker says:

Thomas was one of the better performers last season last year… Very steady. Rex even said so. Why so down on the guy? Never understood why fans on this site and the overly critical opinion of Thomas. When i watch games he is in much of the QB pressures. Making tackles behind line scrimage. Much better than that bum we signed that used to play in Miami… and let’s not talk gholston… I doubt they would trade him and create a hole… Let Cro goto Oak. We dont need him! And all these games he and his agents are playing. I am sure we gave him FAIR offer. He has not signed. Tells you something. Let him walk. We gave Wilson. Just saying.

    • avatar bilal says:

because once a player develops a bad rep amongst fans its almost impossible for him to shake it. see drew coleman and eric smith.

      • avatar Marvel says:

Lol, Coleman sucks… Nice blitzes from time to time but come on already.

        • avatar booskie24 says:

plus strickland jacks people up!! hit a lot of people hard. obvioyusly he needs to stay healthy…but he played a pretty good nickle when he was on the field.

        • avatar bilal says:

the guy made plays marvel. i am not asying he didnt get beat once in a while but hes a nickle cb! how many shutdown nickle cb’s do you see in the nfl? you dont. otherwise they wouldnt be a nickle guy.

he made more plays on the field that brodney pool yet everyone is so upset that we arent resigning him.

having said all that, I have no problem with replacing him with strickland. i was just illustrating a point of how fans, like you just did, always look at the negatives of a player. its hard to shake perception on TJB and with fans in general

  63. avatar johnt says:

Holy crap, chill out guys. We went to the afc championship game with friggin lito sheppard at corner. lol

I dont care how much cromarties feelings are hurt, he said he was testing the free agent market first. Offer him a deal and tell him he has till tomorrow to take it. If not he can enjoy playing in SF where they have no QB and no chance of winning anything. He would come back hat in hand.

And for those crying about burress, Edwards is demanding way too much money. Why do you think not one Team has signed him yet? There is barely any interest in him at all. If we could have gotten him for 3 mil then of course we would have signed him.

Question for people that are familiar with asante S. Since he doesn’t play man, would there be any chance of him playing in our nickel on the 3rd wide out? Or even at safety? If we moved him to safety he could sit back and he probably would be able to ball hawk as much as he wants. Not sure we want to pay that kind of asking price for a safety though. just an idea.

  64. avatar johnt says:

also everyone is calling the eagles the dream team on the news. lol. I guess nobody in the media every paid attention to the washington redskins. How many times have they did exactly what the eagles are doing, and how many championships did it get them? LOL. My prediction, (and i dont wish any players to get hurt) vick gets hurt playing the giants, running like he always does, and the eagles season goes down the tubes along with him.

  65. avatar tomg says:

Even though it isn’t happening, for all you jet fans who keep posting to trade for OSI, which we all know isn’t a fit and isn’t happening, the GM of the giants today had a meeting with OSI and told OSI the giants would ask for a 1st round pick, so please no more “let’s trade for OSI postings”.

    • avatar Shane L. says:

Amen to that. Idk why anyone would want Osi to begin with. Would be a terrible fit for us. People just pick a name or 2 and whine about trading for them all offseason. Osi isn’t even worth a discussion.

      • avatar booskie24 says:

wow. i think osi is a great player. guy is very hard to deal with. has nack for stripping qb’s and recovering those balls.. we need a pass rusher. he’s very good at that. i don’t think he’d have a hard time in our 3/4-4/3 hybrid system. whats the problem?

  66. avatar jets0906 says:

What about a guy like Dumerville? ive heard he and fox dont see eye to eye, would probably be a dominant olb

    • avatar bilal says:

he was dominant two years ago as an OLB. but now hes coming off a big injury. i would definitely take a shot at him!

  67. avatar Brooklyn Dude says:

If we are looking into trades, maybe we should call the Eagles about Asante Samuel.

  68. any word on cro? any updates? anything?

  69. avatar Manny fresh says:

Trade for champ Bailey and while we at it let’s get Kim kardashing and Jessica biel as cheerleaders… Come on guy last year we were spoiled. We can’t do it every year

  70. avatar miketaliaferro says:

Also, I believe that much of what Bent and Jason have been schooling us on over time is correct.

But, if our cap situation is now soooooooo dire that Tanny is having to carve major holes in the carcass just to put a decent team together, not even INCLUDING Cinderfella, then our cap situation is a MESS.

If it’s THAT bad for ’11, when we knew it’d be tricky, what the hell gets ripped apart for ’12??? Looks like Tanny’s gonna have to cut 2/3 of the roster just to fit Mark & Revis’ payments in.

    • avatar Brendan says:

      Back away from the ledge.

The cap stuff was reported by none other than John Clayton, he who predicts salary cap hell every offseason for this team. Until the season starts and there are glaring holes on this team, I refuse to panic.

    • avatar Bent says:

All the cap saving moves they’ve done so far have been current year reductions rather than deferrals of cap hits into next year. In that respect, 2012 and beyond are looking a lot healthier than we expected right now.

Maybe they’re going to resist the temptation to go “all in” and try and ensure they can make some moves next year too.

Ultimately, I think it boils down to maintaining flexibility.

  71. avatar MikeB says:

Bent. Now that the jets signed someone can you get a striker for tottenham?

    • avatar Bent says:

They’re scouring London jails for impending releases they can guarantee millions of dollars to as we speak.

(Actually, I’m hopeful Plax will upgrade the Jets in the redzone – a major weakness – and I expect that’s what the Todd Heap flirtation was about too).

      • avatar booskie24 says:

i think they are just kind of joining the new two TE set craze. very effective for some teams, including the colts where our new offensive consultant just came from.

  72. avatar MikeB says:

P.S. cimini thinks cro is getting done.

  73. avatar Joe says:

Any updates from camp? I wish i could watch Hard Knocks every year on this team. SNY should do a makeshift version

  74. avatar frustratedjetfan says:

We corralled Plax (2 yrs out of the game) & brought back injury prone Strickland (lasted only 1 yr as a Jet) for the backfield and some fans still want more? I hear Chrebet, Johnny Lam Jones & even Wesley Walker are feeling better; maybe they’re next. And for D help, how about Greg Buttle?

Yeah, just kidding, but is this any way to build a perennial contender?

After reading what is going on I had to re-watch the Monday Night Miracle just to calm down.

Bottom line: They don;t look like they have their act together this year & time’s running out. Too soon to panic, but if they don’t get moving this year will suck big time.

    • avatar Jets0906 says:

Once we sign cromartie how do we not have our act together? should we have gone out and signed mario williams? Demarcus ware? Peyton Manning?

    • avatar Brendan says:

He’s averaged 13 games over the past 4 seasons, and if you take out the season he played for the Jets (where he played only 9 games) that jumps to nearly 14.5 games.

His injury concerns are overblown in my opinion.

    • avatar joey the jet says:

joe klecko and marty lyons and gastineaux, victor green, terry glenn, and otis smith are all gonna sign tomorrow,so we pretty set on defense and offense now, there is also a rumor that testaverde is gonna be the backup this year as well, lets go and win the superbowl now frustrated jetfan

  75. avatar frustratedjetfan says:

I hope they keep the Braylon communication open. With no other suitors, he just may come back to earth money-wise.

    • avatar Joe says:

what # would he wear now that 17 is going to be on Plax? imagine they bring back edwards but hes got a differnt # because Plax signed first

  76. avatar jeffjr807 says:

found this site about Jets salary cap. http://nyjetscap.com/salary.html

according to this the only trade/cut that would save a decent amount of cap and not hurt the team as much would be Thomas.

  77. avatar Rexecutioner says:

Please let Thomas go, westerman will do just as good as Thomas at a fraction of the cost, Thomas isn’t a great pass rusher and he’s horrible in coverage, you would think we were talking about Lawrence Taylor the way people are freaking out! He was a typical have a monster year before contract was up,, got rewarded and has been invisible since

    • avatar bilal says:

you obviously aren’t really paying attention. hes extremely versatile. he’s great against the run. He’s rarely used in coverage so I’m not even sure what you are talking about.

it was already confirmed by this site that he was used in more positions than anyone else on the team.

but on westerman, i think the jets FO think he will help out in the pass rush this year. bart scott was talking about him a month ago

  78. avatar NamVetJet says:

Thank god none of us are part of the FO—let’s allow them to make the decisions—they have not done badly since the signing of Rex. Relax all will be well. Just 6 more weeks before we kick some Dallas as….

  79. avatar juunit says:

I think Dumervil could be potentially available, if we blew away the Broncos with an offer. They just added Miller in the draft. That gives them a great defense, but it also allows them to trade Dumervil to upgrade other areas, plus get some salary relief since the deal with Miami for Orton fell through. It would easily cost a first round pick and then some, but it would be worth it. The only other top guys are on top teams, or they’re named Orakpo and their team thinks they’re a top team.

    • avatar bilal says:

exactly. everytime someone says we need a pass rusher i’m always asking who? you can look around the league and none of those teams are going to get rid of em.

otherwise the jets and patriots wouldnt be sitting on their asses and not going after those pass rushers! i wonder if patriots fans go crazy about them not getting pass rushers either?

  80. avatar JetMetVet says:

I’d love to see where this past week’s TJB website visits ranks with earlier years (Comments and/or website visits). Must be insane this week.

Also, in a larger context, have the recent changes to the CBA hurt the Jets overall, since more teams are forced to pay 90% of their cap? (I think thats the number I heard) It just seems more teams are willing to get involved in these bidding wars, which is making it a wee bit harder for Tannenbaum to work his magic.

  81. avatar matt says:

The Jets didn’t need to change WR personnel to score in the red zone, they needed to change OC’s. And as someone who has been a Jet fan as long, or longer, than anyone on this site-I criticize the philosophies of Tannenbaum throughout this FA period; and I still am a great Jet fan.

  82. avatar Rexecutioner says:

BT is never in coverage? Go back and watch some of the games from this past year and you will see #58 reaching for a TE cuz he just ran past him, pace is the one who never drops into coverage, an olb in the 3-4 who can only plAy the run is a waste of money, do t forget they drafted this guy out of UAB to be a big speed rusher on the edge

    • avatar bilal says:

forget what they drafted him for. think of the player hes become in this Rex system.

You can like the jets run a 3/4 system like the steelers. Thomas is often playing on the line as a DE and Ellis moves to DT.

In fact, I have been going back and watching some of the games and have not really seen a play where BT got beat. BT is almost never covering the TE on this team!!! It’s usually bart scott or a safety.

People who follow the ravens love what Jarret Johnson does for them in a their “3/4″ and he doesnt rush the passer either.

      • avatar matt says:

If you want to see a LB get his brains beat in, go back and watch what heath Miller did to BT in the first half of the title game. Should have called a TKO.

        • avatar bilal says:

if you want to see a great football play. go to the jets patriots playoff game where BT knocked welker and a rb off their routes on the line scrimmage, then rushed brady, fought through two blockers and force brady into an incompletion.

  83. avatar batwings says:

So far tanny has not steered us in the wrong direction. Can everyone stop acting like the GM. and lets see how this pans out.

  84. avatar matt says:

Can you stop singing in Tanny’s Amen Choir? Anyone who thinks Burress is an upgrade over Edwards is nuts. Yet, that’s where we are, isn’t it?

    • avatar Brendan says:

If he plays like he did before he went to jail, he’s an upgrade.

I doubt he gets to that point, but even 75% of that version of Plax will be plenty for this team.

    • avatar JetMetVet says:

I think Tanny’s history allows us to do a little singing in the choir… He’s been good to us. Remember, it’s “a process.”

    • avatar bilal says:

i don’t necessarily think hes an upgrade but didn’t we all realize that we would lose some players going into this offseason? we had three major players as free agents and a salary cap was brought back into play.

  85. avatar BrayBray17 Fan says:

These fake fans really gotta relax!

  86. avatar bilal says:

these ‘real’ fans calling out ‘fake’ fans need to relax as well.

  87. avatar Levi says:

Would if they trade D.Harris for a good pass rushing OLB? Just how far should we go for a pass rusher?

  88. avatar Man-Gold says:

“As part of the Jets hectic pace on getting Antonio Cromartie under contract, they are calling around on trades to clear cap room.”

Is that a subliminal sign? The usage of the word “pace”. Are we shopping Calvin Pace?

Probably not. But its interesting nonetheless.

    • avatar JetMetVet says:

“As part of the Jets hectic pace on getting Antonio Cromartie under contract, they are calling around on trades to clear cap room.”

Within this one tweet, the word “R E V I S” can be found 4 times if you shuffle the letters around. Coincidence?

      • avatar Man-Gold says:

Revis and Cromartie both play CB and the Jets are trying to lock Cromartie up by trading Pace?!?!

        It makes perfect sense.

  89. avatar Jets babyyy says:

I don’t know if we need a LB but Seattle just released Lofa Tatupu.

Can anyone shed any light if the Jets might be interested in him?

  90. avatar matt says:

Look at it this way: If MT played this situation as well as the Houston GM, he could have signed CB Joseph and WR Sims-Walker for a little over $10M. He’s now put himself in the position of guaranteeing Cro and a 34-year-old Wr who hasn’t played in two years $about $14M.

And before you tell me Sims-Walker suks, he’s big and has put up 14 TDs in the last 2 years. And he will put up huge #s with Bradford.

    • avatar Brendan says:

      Sims-Walker is on St. Louis.

      • avatar matt says:

        Yeah, he is now-not then.

        • avatar Brendan says:

You tried to bash Tanny by saying “look at what the Houston GM did”. The Houston GM didn’t sign those two guys.

          • avatar matt says:

The Houston GM realized he wasn’t getting a deal and turned around and signed the next- best corner on the market. I know you’d rather have Joseph than Cro because you agreed with me when I said it before the FA period started.

      • avatar Brendan says:

        And Sims-Walker is injury-prone.

Also, I don’t see how a $3.7 million deal and a deal that is $48.5 over 5 years (a $9.7/year average) is “just over $10 mil.

Seems to me they could have gotten them both for $13-$14 million, which is probably around what they’ll get Cro/Plax for.

        • avatar matt says:

Sims-Walker’s contract is guaranteed for a little under $1-M. He has incentives that could bring the deal to $3.7M, but if he gets hurt all the time as you say, then you should believe he won’t reach them, Brendan.

He still played enough to score 14 tds in 2 years.

  91. avatar Boomer says:

If I as Cromartie I would string the Jets along for a few days as leverage and than sign the best offer that was available from another team. He should have some self respect. They spent a week treating him like a dog.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Yeah, those animals fronted Cro $500,000 so he could avoid being taken to court for missed child support payments. What dogs.

    • avatar OMAR MINAYA says:

      Like a dog?

His agent is Aso agent and the #1 domino almost always falls before the rest. Aso was the #1 domino. That’s how it ALWAYS happens. They set the market and help out the rest. And the fact that Cro’s agent was Aso’s made it a no brainer. I’m 100% positive Cro’s agent told him that he has to hammer out Aso’s FA before he gets to Cro since it would benefit Cro as well.

Even if Jets had no interest in Aso because of $$$, Cro’s agent would not let him sign anything without Aso locking up first.

    • avatar batwings says:

Cro was the one who said he wants to test the market. He had no loyalty to the jets.

  92. avatar orjetfan says:

Lets trade Mangold for Abraham, he is a pass rusher! Hahaha

  93. avatar OMAR MINAYA says:

    GREAT IDEA!

Lets trade Revis so we can free up some cash for Cro.

  94. avatar JetMetVet says:

    According to Roto:

The Cardinals are in discussions with free agent Braylon Edwards about a “short-term” deal.

The Cards don’t want to commit long term to Edwards, which makes plenty of sense. He’s got too many off-field interests for a team to assume he’ll stay motivated. Edwards could try to have a big year in Arizona and hope the free agent wideout market isn’t as deep next year as it was this year. It very much hurt Edwards’ free agency value that four-year free agents became unrestricted.

  95. avatar orjetfan says:

Brendan thanks for being one of the voices of reason on this site.

    • avatar Nick says:

Dont thank him too much. He has never found fault with any FO move ever. No matter the outcome Brandan will spin the positive.

Listen, I still love RR, but can we stop with the “everyone wants to play for Rex” crap? I also think Mr T is a top five GM, but we screwed the pooch so far this short offseason.

      • avatar Brendan says:

I don’t love every move unconditionally. I just don’t see the point in bashing the FO when they’re not finished. I guess patience is a scarce virtue.

        • avatar frustratedjetfan says:

This is not church, it’s a sports blog and the fun of sports is debating it so let’s keep it real!

You can be a devoted fan & still disagree with the company line.

          • avatar Brendan says:

I never said you couldn’t. But to call for the failure of a season in the last week of July because the free agency period didn’t go how people wanted it to is immature and premature.

      • avatar Ed L says:

        such a novel idea….

        being positive

      • avatar TJBFan says:

I don’t see it that way. In less than a weeks time:

Signed Holmes, Plax, E Smith, W Hunter, R Turner, ENTIRE Rookie DRAFT and countless undrafted players.

LT took paycut, Brunell was cut and resigned for less.

Offer is out for Cromartie and Diggs. Reached out to Ellis.

Word out that DH long term contract talks have been in the works

-Failed but attempted to sign biggest free agent this offseason, which most wrote off as a dream. This included countless negotiations for restructuring contracts. Also had talks with Moss, J Jones and T Heap as possible acquisitions.

The man is extremely hard at work for us! Don’t forget he had to deal with rules made last minute…the signing of undrafted players and rookies vs free agency is typically months apart not days before camp at the same time.

    Brendan,

I must admit, that is a good point. I forgot about that.

But if u are Cro, how do u walk into that locker room again? They tried to replace him in front of the entire NFL world… If it was me, I would play for Oakland. But that’s just me.

    • avatar jets1974 says:

Oh, come on. Cro started this when he said he wouldn’t take a hometown discount, after the “hometown” busted out $500,000 to help him pay his child support.

This is business. Show him the money, and he’ll get over it.

    • avatar Brendan says:

You would spite a team that took you in with open arms and fronted you 1/2 a million dollars, all while going from a team with Super Bowl aspirations to one with “just don’t suck” aspirations, just because they wanted to replace you with the 2nd best player at your position in the NFL?

Look, I get that pride is a huge part of this business. But if Cro wants to make money, you do that by becoming a star in NY, not a good player on a crappy-to-mediocre Oakland team.

I hope he’s wired in a way that he has a competitive spirit and doesn’t want to go out like that. Only time will tell, though.

  97. avatar jets1974 says:

I stopped taking Clayton seriously — especially on salary cap related issues — when he spent the past month telling us that the Jets were $1.2 million over the cap.

  98. avatar C Low says:

Even if the Jets had zero to little interest in Nnamdi becaus eof price tage and wanted to re-sign Cro first thing last Monday there is no way Cro’s agent would let him decide before Aso was off the board.

If Cro is pissed off at the Jets then he’s a freakin idiot.

  99. avatar C Low says:

I honestly think that if Plax never played for the Giants and remained in Pitt before his prison sentence that there is no way Tanny and Woody get Plax over Moss.

For Woody, Tanny, and Rex its all about Superbowl but also about gaining market share of NYC fans.

  100. avatar Phil says:

Bent- maybe you can shed some light for me because I am confused. I see people on here bitching that Plax got guaranteed money as opposed say a sims-walker. Am I wrong to believe this all counts the same against the cap? Who cares if it is guaranteed or not (assuming it affects the cap equally)? We have an owner who can spend money and isn’t afraid to. I’m sure if there was no cap we would sign everyone…

  101. avatar karl hungus says:

I am not upset yet at the FO, but if Edwards signs for about what Plax signed for on a one year deal, I am going to go ballistic……

I still think they should have tried to move to keep all 3 of their guys, losing smith was not a big deal, but IMO it would have been smart to keep their own this time around, especially with a shortened/condensed offseason…..

    • avatar jets1974 says:

No way Braylon signs a 1 year, $3 million contract.

I would bet it would be more like 2 years, $13 million type of deal.

  102. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i hope the jets dont get desperate and trade scott or pace

  103. avatar Joe says:

I dont think a trade will happen. I think Tanny was just calling to see who was available and for what cost. Clayton’s word on cap space is moot to me. didnt Shefter say the Jets have 10mil room like two hours after Clayton said the Jets had no room?

  104. avatar Boomer says:

I can’t imagine they would trade any of their LBs. They have no depth. The next guy on the depth chart – Westerman – is an undrafted free agent.

  105. i just don’t get it. a couple of days ago a few guys restructured their contracts. so what the heck happened?

  106. avatar MikeB says:

Cimini expects s Ellis to sign we’d night as he can’t practice until thurs anyway. Also to whomever asked, about 5 hours ago he tweeter they are working on cro and tomb patient. His words. While cimini also indicated he expected high fives over aso he is usually on the money

  107. avatar The Green Hornet says:

Screw going for Cromartie. Fool me once shame on you(Asho). Fool me twice shame on me(Cro and the brady bunch).

    Get Carlos Rodgers

If we have to trade then send the McKnights to NE for Woodhead.

We should not by any means get screwed by this agent again.

    • avatar Brendan says:

      Carlos rogers routinely gets burned.

And what would that trade accomplish?

      • avatar The Green Hornet says:

The point is we don’t need to trade , but if we are looking to let’s geta good player like Woodhead. Joe Mcknight and Scotty Mcknight will not be on this team next year.

I have faith in our coaching staff so Rodgers would be a good pickup.

Cromartie and his agent are going to screw us just like they did with asshomuga.

We need a pass rusher, cb, and a safety and we are set.

I havent heard a peep about any other team being interested in Shaun Ellis. It’s probably the age.

  116. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i still cant believe that cro and bray are not signed by anyone yet…especially after this mass spending on free agents…what does the jets and every other team know about these 2 that the jets didnt panic and make them top priority like holmes???

  117. avatar Jets0906 says:

Cromartie wasnt going anywhere til the ASO situation was resolved. By tomorrow morning Cro will be a jet along with Buchanon

  118. avatar Boomer says:

I’ll tell you what is going with Cromartie:

He has offers from a couple of teams but is holding the Jets hostage for a big contract because he knows he can do it.

Without Cro, the Jets’ starting corner is either D. Strickland or K. Wilson. Combine those 2 guys with no pass rush, and the Jets are in trouble. Cro knows this (and his agents certainly understand this dynamic). So Cro is holding the Jets hostage for a big new contract. B/c he KNOWS he has a ton of leverage.

  119. avatar JETS#1 says:

But with Abraham he might cost just a 3rd pick and he can redem himself

    • avatar jets1974 says:

Abraham is a 4-3 defensive end.

      • avatar bilal says:

when we first had abraham we were a 3/4 team and he was great as a rookie.

I’m sure hes become a lot bigger and used to 4/3.

and why would the falcons, a legitimate playoff team, trade their best pass rusher???

        • avatar JETS#1 says:

@bilal cause a 3rd, 5th rd pick is good constalation and besides there is a more likely chance the Flacons trade us Abraham then the giants trading us Osi

  125. avatar orjetfan says:

The Abraham comment was a play on the fact that we got an all world center for him and went deeper into the post season more times than when we had the all world pass rusher.

Leads me to believe that I would take defensive run stopping ability over pass rushing ability in a defense if I had to make the choice.

I was proud to be a jet fan when we could actually stop the run. It seemed to start with our nose tackle. First it was Klecko, Ferguson, Jenkins and now Pouha/Devito. The pass rushing thing is important but seems to be secondary.

  126. avatar matt says:

I like Hayden, but he’s an injury gamble. Can probably get him for about $5-M plus incentives.

  129. avatar Jets0906 says:

Ok so since im the only one not on suicide watch, if we lock up Cro,Buchanon and ellis will you people calm the hell down?

  130. avatar C Low says:

We should just F Cro and his agent. Tanny should lob a call to the Raiders and say the Jets are pulling out, then the Raiders can low ball Cro, and Cro can cry he left million on table for his baby mommas

  131. avatar Dylan says:

Don’t understand why people would prefer guys like Rogers and Buchanon to Cromartie. Does anybody ever watch the Redskins play? Their cornerbacks are all extremely overrated, and are constantly getting burned. Rogers was pretty good a couple years ago, but he got beat a lot last year. Buchanon had some nice years for the Bucs, but he is nothing more than an average 3rd CB now. Cro is WAY better than both those guys. Plus he is familiar with this system.

    • avatar Bklyn Tay says:

I would have to disagree the skins gave up 1,000 passing yards more than the jets. D. Hall gave up over a thousand yards to wr alone with a completion percentage of about 70% so he was targeted often and leads to the numbers the skins have as a team. I’m not saying Carlos or Philip are better man to man cover guys but they both do tackle and are physical and play better in zone which seems to be a issue for Cro. Basically I would take Philip/Carlos and Lawson/Roth over resigning Cro because what he wants in salary you could fill 2 needs.

      • avatar Dylan says:

The Jets cornerbacks hardly play any zone defense though. There isn’t much of a reason to, because Revis and Cro both play great man to man defense. Zone D is generally something that coordinators use to make up for bad cornerbacks. It isn’t nearly as effective, because good QBs can usually find holes in it fairly easily. Cro is an essential part of this defense imo. The Colts killed us in the AFC Championship Game a couple years ago, because Lito and Lowery were getting abused by the Colts receivers, and Manning can pick apart a zone better than anyone in the NFL.

  132. avatar JETS#1 says:

@C Low YES YES A THOUSNAD TIMES YES next to our secondary taking such a step backwards we would have to really trade for a good passs rusher I would love to do that

    ANALYSIS

It will be a miracle if this guy even makes it to opening day without pulling something, tweaking something or worse, and that figures to be the pattern all year, and even if by some miracle he manages to stay healthy, its highly unlikely he can ever again compete at a high level verses world class athletes, the kind you find in the NFL

In short, this move was ill conceived from the get-go, based solely on name recognition and ignoring the circumstances and harsh realities, and as such this move has KING SIZE FAIL written all over it.

    • avatar Jets0906 says:

Good one, now go be an eagle and Miami Heat fan and leave us alone

I’m a Jets fan, was born a Jets fan and will die a Jets fan, but I call it like I see it and we would have put that 3 million to better use had we just given it to charity, and by that I mean those who really needed it, not someone who simply needed to make a quick score so he could payoff some of his legal bills.

  134. avatar johnnyreefer says:

    still?

HANK, stop pretending to be somebody else.

    • avatar Dobermite says:

Yeah still, because I get the feeling we’re about to double down on this debacle and replace Antonio Cromartie with Phillip Buchanon too. After replacing Braylon Edwards with Plaxico Burress, IMO that is a genuine fear.

  135. avatar JetMetVet says:

    Interesting,

    ESPN:

LaDainian Tomlinson’s pay cut reduced his 2011 allotment from $2.625 million to roughly $1.1 million.

  136. avatar Ryan says:

If the Jets are able to get a CB(preferably Cromartie at a reasonable price) and re-sign Ellis(which would allow them to go $3M over the cap), do you think the Jets could go out and get another WR. As much as Plax could help, he is still a question mark until we see him on the field. I wouldn’t mind them getting someone else who could spread the field. I would prefer not to rely too much on Kerley. And as for Scotty McKnight, I have very low expectations because he most likely would not have even been drafted(by anyone, let alone the Jets) had it not been for Sanchez.

  137. avatar Jon says:

How are we all of a sudden low on the cashflow????

  138. avatar Joe says:

    @ClaytonESPNJohn Clayton

Just checked on Antonio Cromartie. No deal tonight. Raiders are in mix, but Jets working hard to get it done.

    • avatar Dobermite says:

Sounds too me like the Nnamdi/Cromartie agents are using the same playbook with Cromartie, taking their sweet time and using the Jets to drive up the price, and I have a feeling this one will be ending the same way, with Cromartie eventually signing elsewhere.

I’m sure the Jets learned a lesson from the Nnamdi debacle and would love to cut bait with Cromartie if there was someone like Jonathan Joseph or Nate Clements still on the market, unfortunately that ships done sailed and all thats left at CB are scrap-heap guys like Phillip Buchanon, so the Jets have no choice but to wait for Cromartie to make a decision … and pray.

  139. avatar Jetfan in Miami says:

    ClaytonESPN John Clayton
The market is picking up for Jets WR Braylon Edwards although nothing is close. Cards are interested.

    • avatar Dylan says:

He isn’t really a Jets receiver anymore lol. I hope he gets a nice deal with an NFC team, since its pretty apparent he isn’t coming back. I’m a bit scared that the Dolphins will end up with him. A Marshall/Edwards combo would be pretty scary, and he is familiar with Henne (who only seems to play well against the Jets).

  140. avatar Jetsfan29 says:

Just thought I’d throw this out there, I heard k wilson d Strickland, where’s lowery? Am I saying he’s lockdown? Clearly no! However he has played cb and safety and is serviceable! Just food for thought though!

    • avatar Jetfan in Miami says:

He will probably see time at Safety since Pool won’t be back

    • avatar Dylan says:

It wouldn’t surprise me if he was our starting FS this year. He doesn’t really have the speed to start at CB, or guard shifty slot receivers. Safety is a much better position for him imo.

      • avatar Jetsfan29 says:

Agreed on both replys, however if it came down to it I’m sure he can be thrusted in and do ok

        • avatar Dylan says:

I like Lowery. He is a very smart player, and he has made some big plays for us. He has gotten exposed at times when he has been asked too much. But we could do a lot worse than him in an emergency situation.

          • avatar Dobermite says:

Lowery is not a total experient or projection at Safety either, because he did play some Safety in college as well, and a lot of scouts at the time thought that was his better fit in the pros.

  141. avatar Dobermite says:

BTW, what I would like to see the Jets do if Cromartie slips away or even if they sense his agents are pulling a Nnamdi and he’s on his way out, is maybe sign Buchanon or Rogers as a Nickel on the cheap, but use the bulk of the money they had in mind for Cromartie on SS Michael Huff instead, because we can’t count on Jim Leonhard coming off a severely broken leg and Eric Smith is not starting material either.

Therefore I would use Michael Huff at one Safety spot then let Dwight Lowery and Jim Leonhard compete for that other spot, with Lowery offering more athleticism and ball skills in my view.

As for the other CB spot, let Kyle Wilson have it if Cromartie leaves, and Buchanon or Rogers or Hayden can be the Nickel.

    • avatar DirtySanchez6 says:

      FS Dwight Lowery
      SS Michael Huff
      CB Kyle Wilson
      Nickel/Dime Phillip Buchanon
      Nickel/Dime Donald Strickland

That has the potential to be a pretty good secondary if Wilson can step up his game in year two, and he should, aftrall he was a first round pick.

      • avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

If Cro flies (sorry couldn’t resist), I would think that Buchanon should be the target. He actually fills multiple needs as he can start opposite Revis and he can return punts (3 career TDs) and the occassional kick-off (hasn’t since 07).

    • avatar Jetfan in Miami says:

agreed! Wonder what our cap looks like now.

    • avatar Dobermite says:

Honestly Mike, its too much for Antonio Cromartie, he’s a good player but IMO he is not an 8 million per player, but really the Jets had no choice, they are a win now team and Cromartie totally had them over a barrel, first because there was nothing at CB left on the open market that even approached his level, and second because his agents knew exactly how high the Jets were ready to go for Nnamdi, seeing as they are also Nnamdi’s agents, and third because I would imagine Cromartie was hurt over the Jets pursuit of Nnamdi and willingness to kick him to the curb, so the Jets had to show him the love with CASH MONEY, otherwise there’s a good chance he signs elsewhere for equal money.

      • avatar jets0906 says:

Everyone on here speculated 10 mil…So this is a very fair deal, less than Aso and Joseph. Great contract

        • avatar Dobermite says:

Yeah I agree, under the circumstances I thought this would be even more costly for the Jets, so they got off cheaper than I expected even if 8 million per is a lot for Cromartie.

Anyway I’m just glad we got it done, I feel like we really dodged a bullet, I just had a bad feeling about this, I thought Cromartie would get a similar top end offer elsewhere and take it to spite the Jets, but he proved to be a bigger man than I anticipated and the Jets are lucky, IMO most guys would have been pissed off and signed elsewhere.

Too much. Kyle Wilson is going to be CB3 for at least four years now? I mean, potentially, that’s a hell of a trio if Wilson steps up. That might be doubtful with him playing the slot though. I never really liked Cromartie as a long term fit, especially not for $8m a year. He played really well in coverage last season, but that was with Revis covering number ones. I just hate the lack of physicality Cromartie plays with. Oh well, either way, he’s a solid player, and he makes INTs, which the defense really lacked. Things could definitely be worse in Jetland.

      • avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

Depends on the guarantees in Cro’s contract and how well Wilson adapts. There is a chance that Wilson is CB4 this year as well, as he has to earn rex’s trust, which Strickland did 2 years ago.

  155. CROMARTIE :) I’ve been critical of him, probably too critical. Don’t know what you have until it’s gone… and I’m glad Cromartie isn’t gone

  156. avatar Dylan says:

Awesome news! This has been a very successful off-season imo. We re-signed our two most important free agents, and we found a nice replacement for Braylon. I really think we will be an even better team next year, as long as Sanchez continues to improve.

  157. avatar Jetfan in Miami says:

Antonio (No Hometown Discount) Cromartie gets 4 yrs, $32 mil, a source confirms — $4 mil a year less than Asomugha. #Jets

    • avatar Dylan says:

It sounds like a very fair deal. He makes a lot less than Aso, and nearly 2 mil per year less than Joseph (over one less year). Obviously we need to see how much of the contract is guaranteed. But on the surface, it seems like a very reasonable deal. Especially considering how badly we needed him.

  158. avatar Dobermite says:

Gland we got Cromartie done, this was huge and it would have been a colossal blow had we lost him and Braylon Edwards, but now that its done I’m still worried about Safety, what with Jim Leonhard coming off a broken leg and Pool cut loose.

I actually like Dwight Lowery and I think he’ll be good at Safety if Leonhard is not ready, but IMO we still need another quality starter back there and Donte Whitner is still available.

Any chance we can afford another piece, Donte Whitner?

  159. avatar Matt says:

Hey Bent, just a suggestion, hire an over night blogger. The story on Cromartie just broke and would love to hear what you guys have to say instead of having to scroll down on this comment section. Love the work you guys do and Lets go Jets!

    • avatar Bent says:

I don’t do the hiring and firing! However, I am in England, so the gap between you guys hitting the sack and me waking up is pretty small.

  160. Lol yeah.. we’re talking about Cromartie all over this thread. I think this should shush all the negative Jets “fans” after we signed Holmes/Cromartie/Plaxico… Ellis anyone?

    • avatar Dobermite says:

      “Ellis anyone?”

We just drafted two stud DL’s with our first two picks, and I like some of the other young players we have at DE like DeVito and Ropati.

I like Ellis and have no problem with bringing him back, but IMO thats a luxury while Safety is more of a necessity, so that money would be better spent on Donte Whitner.

  161. Ellis sacked Brady in the playoffs twice. Ellis is a great run stopper… he can only help the Jets

    • avatar Dobermite says:

I agree and I’m not opposed to bringing Ellis back, I’m just saying I think Safety is more of a priority so all things being equal I would rather sign Donte Whitner.
