Jets vs. Jaguars – Game Notes

by Tuchman on September 18th, 2011 at 4:05 pm

Some quick notes on the Jets crushing victory over the Jaguars 32-3, written on the train ride back from the game:

Defensive Dominance

First of all, it’s really really really good to see the Jets play this strongly against a weak opponent. Last season, they play close games against the Bengals and Texans, two teams whom they arguably should’ve crushed, so it was good to see them take such a commanding lead and confuse Luke McCown to such a great degree. Maurice Jones-Drew, who was the Jaguars’ only real offensive threat with Mercedes Lewis injured, was held to 88 yards spread over 18 carries. He had a couple of big runs, but the Jets’ “bend but don’t break philosophy” ensured they weren’t turned into points.

Mo Wilkerson, Eric Smith, and Antonio Cromartie all had very big games, the latter nearly pulling off a pick 6. The defense’s 4 interceptions were huge and took the pressure off of a offense that struggled at times. Which brings me to…

Offense
I can’t really complain about much after a 32-3 victory, but I’m a Jets fan, so here goes:

I know we were up by a great deal, but there were times when Brian Schottemeimer’s play-calling was baffling. We ended up with a field goal, but there was no good reason to throw twice with less than two minutes left in the first half.

Sanchez’s ability to connect with his newer receiver was also reason for concern. His only throw to Burress was a too-high pass the end zone. The Jets’ leading receiver today was Dustin Keller, who caught 6 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Again, can’t complain but on a 32-point day, but these are weaknesses that could be exploited.

Also, Wayne Hunter gave up 25 yards on two penalties, killing two drives. That was painful.

It was nice to see the running game, and Shonn Greene in particular, getting some action. He had 49 yards and a TD today, which is much better than last week.

All in all, the Jets launched themselves to 2-0 (at home!), firing up their fan base in the process. It’s hard to find many negatives in that.

sanchez ill be the first to say he is improving and i personally feel a bit more lax with him at the qb position and i’ve got to mention this
    …First quarter/drive touchdown!
but common sanchez its great that you’re spreading the ball around but he’s still forcing throws hence the two ints
decision making needs to be better he can make the throws

  2. avatar Private Jet says:

They only beat the Jaguars by less than 30 points. I wouldn’t call it a dominant game.

    • avatar bisfg says:

what a 4 td lead isnt dominating enough? you kidding me? your hilarious hahahaha

      • avatar Private Jet says:

They had to settle for a FG TWICE when they should’ve been TD’s. I’d call that pretty pathetic.

        • avatar Matt3222 says:

Hope you are kidding or you are the one that is quite pathetic.

Jets werent as sharp as they could have been but man I HATE the fans that are disappointed by 29 point wins

Do us all a favor and find another team.

          You=pathetic

Can a +1 from anybody that has been a real fan long enough not to be this negative today? Ugh our own “fan” base can be so frustrating

  3. avatar Jeff says:

    Another problem – Wayne Hunter

Against a team with some middling players at DE, he couldn’t hold his ground. Getting beat and giving up penalties effectively killing two drives.

Main question is how long until the team looks toward a viable veteran FA to spell him when he is struggling? We saw how our offense fell apart without Mangold. So at least getting a veteran in there could help with the depth. Was I the only one who saw Baxter consumed by pot-roast?

    • agreed!! great win! i’m excited about this team!! no major negatives about the win in my opinion. but when are we going to get a solid veteran to back-up the o-line? i know it’s nit-picking but when mangold went down i got real nervous! it’s after week 1 so no contracts are guaranteed. they have cap-room to spare…go out and get a vet back-up! with that i think we have all the makings of a division winner!

  4. avatar Roger Fortune says:

oh and Mo Wilks did what vernon could never do and a safety at that? love it

  5. avatar jon in bk says:

Hunter is not impressing at all, offense in general still has room for growth.

Great win, though, lots of positives to take (Cro, Keller, run D).

  6. avatar nyr2k2 says:

wayne hunter is simply horrendous. if he continues to play this way, sanchez will be sidelined by week 6. just awful, awful play.

  7. avatar David morgan says:

Any word yet on the seriousness of mangold’s injury? It looked bad. A mortal woulda been carted off

  8. avatar Tracker says:

I tell you, Shotty sure was determined to prove the Jets could run up the middle. Greene seemed to have more success running outside.

    • avatar Peter Shaw says:

I’m still screaming at the OC for this same thing! Can we get to next year fast enough so that we can be rid of this guy already? Even with 32 points you just can’t be happy with this OC!!

  9. avatar FJB says:

gr8 Win. Issues for the font office to deal with; Hunter (he must be a backup again) and Offensive line help. Back when parcells came in he changed the o-line and the team was immediate better. We live and die w/ the o-line. Anyone know the status of Mangold?

  10. avatar lukeee says:

    you’re not really funny…

  11. avatar WW85 says:

Sanchez did not look good at all today. His accuracy & decision making didn’t look too hot. He’s obviously a good clutch QB, but his bread & butter in game stuff is pretty weak. I’d like to see a hurry up offense implemented throughout the game & see if Sanchez wakes up a bit.

    • avatar juunit says:

You serious? He completed most of his passes, he just completely didn’t see the defenders on the INTs. His passes were pretty much all on point today. Plus he was using his legs, which is something he needs to do more often.

    • avatar boogie down says:

He really only played poorly on the two INT’s. Both TD passes were extremely well-placed throws in traffic. It’s hard to go 17/24 if your accuracy is off. Also, on his last drive, the pass to Plax that went above his head was accurate, too. The problem was that it was a quick throw and Plax got caught in traffic, preventing him from being in the back of the end zone to catch the ball.

In all, I thought Sanchez played well, especially considering 2/5 of his O-line was inept. But, yes, his decision-making could certainly use some improvement.

      • avatar KenEB says:

Sanchez was locked in on one receiver prior to the deep interception on the left side of the field. The corner watched Sanchez’ eyes, and left the receiver he was defending along the sideline, and cut in front of the targeted receiver. Had Sanchez scanned the field even a little bit, he would have completed the pass.

    • avatar starz31 says:

yeah, im not sure what game you watched. he had some mistakes, but they were overshadowed by a very good game by him.

    • avatar Harvlis says:

I agree. The Defense was the reason for this score. Sanchez did his best to throw it away. Missing Plax, in the endzone, by ten feet was ugly. Schottenheimer was as ugly as ever. Not utilizing his wide receivers and running up the middle with no deception, over and over. Wayne Hunter is proving that he is a back-up, at best. The score does not tell the story of the game. I would like to see our offense impose their will, just once. With all of the talent on this team, their is just no excuse.

  12. avatar FireSchotty says:

Who said anything about the Brady Bunch first of all? ON a side note, I once new a Jim and he was also a complete moron

  13. avatar Jeff says:

The Chargers could have tied with New England and now they are down 13! Goddamn is there anyone besides us who can beat these smug clowns???

  14. avatar brad says:

Ducasse got some action once brunell went in. He didnt make any mistakes. If hunter keeps struggling like this ducasse will be our starting OT soon unless we pick up someone else.

  15. avatar Zenlaw says:

It was a very fun game to attend.

I’ve got to think that if Mangold is in danger of missing significant time, the Jets will look for O-line help.

  16. SD is nothin but a name they really suck.

  17. avatar starz31 says:

this isn’t the overreaction post like last week. haha

  18. avatar starz31 says:

Big game by Cromartie, Eric Smith, Mo, and Keller. Sanchez was exactly what we needed today , and then some. Led some great drives, had some tight throws, and only had a couple bad mistakes. You take that every day.
Defense was swarming and looked great.
Nick Folk had a solid game.

Oline, oline, oh-line. Wow. Callahan has his work cut out for him. Mangold has a sprain. I bet he misses at most 1 game. Wayne Hunter should be on a short leash. Much improvement needed before Pats game, otherwise he will be exploited bad. I don’t doubt Tanny is on this.

  19. avatar starz31 says:

What the he;l was Tolbert doing there?! oh my gosh

  20. avatar spent says:

They won a game they were supposed to win. Now let’s sit back and listen as to the media machine try to make a story out of it.

The punt coverage is in shambles!
The water boy position is a mess, even Bart Scott is pulling double duty!
The Patriots would’ve won this by 340!

    Oh well. Go JETS!

    • avatar starz31 says:

yeah but its good to see the jets steamroll a team they are supposed to. We’ve been missing these kind of wins in recent years, with the exception being the Bills rout a couple years ago.

  21. avatar Jeff says:

Wow. If the Chargers would just kick a field goal when they keep getting in NE territory they would be winning.

The NE defense gets these lucky turnovers, but they are just being steamrolled on every facet of the game

  22. avatar Reprocity says:

The running game looks inept? The first drive looked awsome but other than that the D gave them the ball on the 1 and had a safety, so the offence really scored 22 points. We played awsome on D but the score had very little to do with the offence.

  23. avatar DeRo says:

jets D came up big today! schotty needs to be replaced. I have wanted him gone since Manginas first season. worst play caller in the history of the NFL. There offense has wayyyy to many weapons for them to not score a TD everytime they get the ball. Any one wanna see if Cro can throw the ball on that end around?

  24. avatar Johnnyjetson says:

Great win no doubt but schotty still doesnt impress me with his play calling…

    1. Did he ever hear of a sweep run to he left or right? How about a delay draw play? Does every run have to go right up the middle?

    2. I see this every game, we have 3 wr’s running the same route in the same location thats what happened in sanchez first int…burress holmes mason all in the same area with about 5 jag defenders around, could we spread out the wr’s?

I just dont see us winning a sb with him at oc…i hope im wrong

  25. avatar Mr Blint says:

Shotty really should not call plays. Runs up the middle were ineffective all day, and yet SHotty stubbornly called runs up the middle. In the rare occasion when he went wide – we generally got a good result. Last year Green was great on pitch outs – and yet we haven’t seen that yet. As for the trick plays – am I wrong or on these reverses are we not faking a sweep that we have yet to actually run. I mean how is a fake going to work when you don’t actually run the play your are attempting to make the defense to buy into? It is amazing the sanchez completed 70% considering he was continuously forced to hit guys through a tiny window. Is this because our receivers are lousy at route running – or could it be that the defense contiuously stays a step ahead of our playcaller? I can’t wait until Sanchez reaches a point where he calls his own plays – he can’t do worse than Shotty.

  26. avatar ramble914 says:

    You think Rex is sexy?

  27. avatar Brendan says:

Man, we’re the worst 2-0 team ever.

  28. avatar matt says:

like to see cumberland in a two tightend set…. the way the pats do it …buress i dont think is getting any seperation… he tore up third and forth stringers against dallas…. nothing against the starters

    • avatar Brendan says:

I was sitting in the end zone on the 2nd tier and they were putting a safety over top of Plax on the majority of plays. That’s no excuse for not working him in with slants and comebacks, but I don’t know if they are confident in the back-shoulder pass yet (for comebacks).

    • avatar Big A says:

I’d love to see some stats on how Plax is doing, such as how many plays he’s in, % of running/passing plays, thrown at, etc. compared to the other receivers.

  29. avatar C Low says:

Any news on Mangold? At the end of the game they mentioned a high ankle sprain. If that’s correct that’s a tough blow. Usually a grade III high ankle sprain puts a player on the shelf for 4-7 weeks.

Hopefully its only a grade 1 sprain.

  30. avatar C Low says:

I watched every play 4 times on my DVR. I notice that the more picks Sanchez throws the more tunnel-visioned he becomes. He stares down his receiver so much more after the first pick and even more after the second. He needs to have that CB forgetful mentality.

Cro and Pace had a hell of a game.

  31. avatar frank cin says:

well glad we won that but I’m worried about four things-(not three like the usual monkeys like to say)
1- Mangold-if they lose him it’s going to be tough going for a while
2-Hunter-I worried about him last year and he ok then but this year has been scary. long term he’s just a back up at best.
3-Schottenheimer-play calling was slightly better but I just don’t feel comfortable with him. Mr Blint wrote correctly-defenses anticipate his every move!!
4-well, the schedule-the Raiders should be a win but the Pats, Ravens, Miami (better win it) and Chargers could be a problem so we’ll see what happens. if they wind up 3-3 after six games it’s a huge disappointment.

  32. avatar C Low says:

    Hey Brendan,

Still think that Percy Harvin and Aaron Hernandez will suck in the NFL and be your typical over-rated Gator alumni in NFL?

  33. avatar Brian Sullivan says:

    GET HUNTER OUT NOW!!!!!!!!!!
Hunter in two games has done nothing but get Sanchez brutally hit. Sanchez is on borrowed time. Raider have Richard Seymore who will absolutely pound Hunter into the ground. If Sanchez survives, the next week the patriots will kill him. Make no mistake, bill belichick know hunter sucks n he will throw everything including the kitchen sink at him n there goes our season by the hands of the patriots. GOD HELP US !!! Anybody remember 1995 OL rookie Everett McIver getting beat by Bruce Smith n knocking out, poor Boomer Esiason with the shot heard around the shot heard around the league.Boomer Esiason was unconscious, not moving for two minutes.. Finally Esiason came around and was helped to his feet, suffering from a severe concussion. Its not too late !!

  34. rex should start ducasse at tight end and have him play next to hunter. maybe the both of them combined can provide adequate protection for mark.

anyways, good win. we beat down an inferior team just like we should have. on to oaktown!

  35. avatar Odovacer says:

Although his timing was apparently off on two plays, and he did get blown up on two occasions, I thought Baxter did extremely well considering we got him off of waivers and he had been here for what two weeks? Gave me a big confidence boost tbh.

Possibly Bent will touch on this im sure, but he seemed to do a very good job to me all things considered.

Hunter is an embarrassment, enough said.

  36. avatar CGB says:

so the Jets win 32-3 without arguable their second best player – Mangold and NOT one peep on the job his two-weeks in the system back up – Baxter provides. I understand the moron Dierdorf questioning the Jets running… but not guys on thsi site. Mangold is the core of that line and the engine of the run-up-the middle attack. If the Jets fell into a pit once mangold left the high-holy heavens would open with how poorly Tanny prepared for the season on the O-line depth chart. 2-0, glass more than half full. How about some props for Baxter?

  37. avatar Paul says:

There O-line is the biggest concern at this point, with the primary focus on Hunter. Obviously if Mangold is out, than that definitely weakens the line. You can’t truly judge the running backs yet, due to the struggles of the line, but we need to establish a running game.

  38. avatar War Machine says:

They should let me play for Hunter….

  39. avatar nicko says:

damn…some of these so called Jets fans crack me the hell up….
if they won 14-3 you all woulda been killing them…they win 32-3 and a bunch of you guys still killing them..craziness
do we have soem question marks, of course…but what team doesnt? the Pats defense has given up 400 plus yards in 2 games….and didnt we beat them twice last year, and once on the road in playoffs? i cant believe people on here saying we better be scared of them.. gimme a damn break …you might as well put your Pats jersey on and screw off, we dont need clown fans like that….oh and i think we should definately look into signing Shaun O’Hara if he somewhat healthy

  40. avatar Jack says:

I think it’s funny that no one is calling for Ducasse yet. Hunter is a backup. Ducasse was drafted to be our long-term starter at RT. He’s bigger, stronger, faster, younger, and has much more upside. He just needs the reps and practice. If it is between him and Hunter, we should give Ducasse the start and see how he does. If it’s a disaster we pull him for Hunter and look for a veteran. What do you guys think?

  41. avatar NYJBeast89 says:

A little late to the thread but I need to get this out there. Hunter needs to be CUT! No excuses this guy committed two HUGE penalties, 10 and 15 yards respectively. He also got Sanchez roughed up on several occasions. The play where Greene was knocked back and nearly knocked out of the game was entirely a missed assignment on his part. Seriously I hope they can find anybody to replace him, even Ducasse would put up more of a fight based on his size alone. Callahan and Rex need to address this and soon, or else it might cost us our Quarterback.

  42. avatar Jeff says:

The lockout was a huge problem for our O-line. Before Woody retired, we had 2 capable backup linemen and a raw 2nd round rookie awaiting.

The problem was that once Woody left we gave the job to a guy who played adequately when he was in, though gave up numerous sacks when he was in. Our 2nd backup who could arguably start on a number of teams broke his fibula, and because of the lockout our very talented and raw RT did not get the coaching throughout the off-season that he desperately needed.

So right now its like we are down 2 players in our depth on the line. We very well need a veteran lineman who can start some games if need be.

  43. avatar joey boy 79 says:

Sanchez was running for his life most of the game, but due to his ability, was making plays. Against the better defenses, he won’t be nearly as effective. Wayne Hunter is just an average back up at best and a major liability as a starter. It don’t take a football PHD to see this.I dread when we play a top pass rushing team. MS is also just a backup but only slightly better. This is the reason for our weak running game, (3.1 yds/carry today), in my opinion. It can’t all be blamed on Green as the run blocking is atrocious. If we don’t make it over the hump this season, the culprit will be the oline as the primary reason. The lack of depth as the season goes on will even be a bigger problem. I still can’t believe we are into the season without having acquired a solid veteran lineman. Do you know how close we were in getting Sanchez knocked out in our first game? Also, today Roth almost buried him! How long can we tempt fate? It is too early for all these incidences to be happening. You can only defy the odds for so long. Tanny, Rex, wake the hell up! Did you see Baxter get thrown out of the way like a rag doll and almost get another one of our players killed? This is getting scarier by the game. Thank God, the last several minutes of the game were all handoffs, but we will not always have a lead to do that.

  44. avatar Bob Vopat says:

Yes, I think our OL is in trouble. Sanchez does stare down his receivers and has to run too often but he also has no chemistry with his wide receivers. I also agree with one Jet fan who said Greene seems to do better when starting outside and cut back if he sees an opening. These plunges into the middle is great if you line can dominate but we are not dominating anybody yet.Shotty for the most part is very predictable.

  45. avatar deuce4417 says:

sanchez’s ist pic was a bad one but really you can’t put the secong one on him. ist adn 25 and shotty runs twice for 3 yards adn put mark in a no win situation. did anyone notuice the play call? all 4 recievers ran 20 yrd hitches and there was no place to throw the ball. as usual the creativity is not there when the offence needs it to be.
you really can’t blame mark for that one. a sack really changes field position so throwing a 20 yrd pic ain’t that bad. shotty get your head out your ass, even your father was watching that one wondering what the hell you were thinking
