With the Jets getting their bye week this Sunday, we’re going to be doing a lot of analysis of the Jets so far this season. We’re going to take a look at the current roster and provide some thoughts about what we’ve seen so far. Up next, the quarterbacks.
Current Roster: Mark Sanchez, Mark Brunell, Kevin O’Connell
Football Outsiders:
Overall Pass Offense – 2nd
DYAR: Overall QB Ranking – 16th
DVOA Per Play QB Ranking – 18th
Analysis: According to FO, he ranked 38th overall his rookie year, 18th his second season, and is 16th this season. He’s lessened his interceptions to a respectable 2:1 ratio, getting better at making the right read or throwing it away and is taking off on the run only when the situation dictates. No small feat considering everything he’s had to put up with so far this year. The team facility was shut down all spring, he is working with at least two new members of his pass-catching group again, the running game was non-existent for much of the first five games, Sanchez has dealt with bad protection, inconsistent play from his wide receivers and the team has traded his slot receiver just weeks ago. Yes, he’s thrown behind his receivers too often. On the whole, while pundits will still gripe about his completion percentage and yards per pass, he’s done everything else to build the base to make the leap … and that will come with patience.
Moving Forward: Right now, Sanchez doesn’t need to be spectacular, he’ll have time for that. For now, he needs to continue what he’s already been doing so far this season, know his protections, make the right reads, look off coverages, don’t try and press. If he can keep those things together, then he doesn’t need to do more than what we saw last week against the Chargers. The Jets only face one top ten pass defense the rest of the season in the Redskins.
Time to pad those stats.

I think Sanchez is coming along nicely.
Although the td was called back can you post a pic of the Holmes diving catch that was awesome.

Off topic- T. Choice has been cut by the Cowboys.
Should the Jets bring him in? If Green goes down, who has what it takes to carry the load?

Choice highlights
-
If the highlights are a true reflection of his playing style, Choice looks like a physical runner with great hands. He could be a replacement for LT as the screen game running back.
-
if they pick up Choice, then what do they do with powell? he would serve no purpose and the Jets would have to give up on one of their draft picks 7 games into his rookie year.

On the negative side, he’s had some minor injuries lately and some people seem to think he wasn’t playing hard due to the fact that he knew he didn’t have a shot in the Cowboys crowded backfield. However, a change of scenery could be big for him.
-
He has also had issues with ball security and at times, lacked awareness of the game situation. For the most part, it seems that the flaws in his game could be fixed with coaching or by getting more carries and experience. He probably wasn’t helped by the fact that he wasn’t given the lion’s share of carries and, instead, was part of running game by committee.

im not a big fan of sanchito, however he is playing a bit better considering the fact that he has the worst offensive coordinator in football
-
The Cowboys would have liked to have traded him before the deadline, but he is in the last year of his rookie contract, so teams knew the Cowboys would probably just release him eventually.
-
Let me guess, you’re T. Choice’s agent? We’ve got what, 5 RB’s now? The last thing we need is another RB.

Sometimes you have to look at other factors also when looking at the stats. Sanchez is a clear example of this. He had an oline in disarray with no running game early on and Wrs that he had to develop a chemistry with. Yes, he is still throwing behind receivers and still not seeing the entire field but as the line gels with the running game and he is protected better and gains confidence in the line he will again start to make nice strides. We just have to hope that the line holds up as the depth is very shaky with 9 grueling games left and hopefully a post season!

The jets rank 24th in pass offense and 28th in run offense. Where did #2 come from?
-
Brendan fixed the stats up. As it turns out, Sanchez is already in the Hall of Fame.
But seriously, if you throw out his bad games, he’s an awesome quarterback.

Don’t be a knucklehead. I’m sure you’re familiar with the concept of statistical outliers. According to FO, the stinkbomb in Baltimore was the only game this year in which Sanchez had negative value. Not only that, but it was way worse than any game by Sanchez since he was a rookie. It also involved a complete collapse of his pass protection because a 3rd string, undrafted rookie was tyring to play center. It’s so far out there that it’s just not indicative of his performance or ability at this point. Let’s say you just replaced that game with Rex Grossman’s 4 INT game this year — a terrible, terrible performance but one more in the range of reasonableness for Sanchez (as opposed to, say, Luke McCown) — than Sanchez would rank ahead of Rivers and just below Ryan for the year. That’s what we can expect the rest of the year.
When faced with a statistical outlier, you don’t throw it out but if you just leave it in without any qualification or adjustment the results are completely misleading. Consider this example: put 6 janitors and a CEO in a room. The 6 janitors make $50k each (they’re union!) and the CEO makes $2m. So is it reasonable to say the average guy in that room makes over $720k a year? Of course not.
-
Bad math: it should be over $320k in the second to last sentence. The point is the same.

Sanchez suffered through the Ravens game and that game ruined his stats for the first 7 games. He also had a number of ghastly drops that further hurt his stats. IMO, he’s improved a lot over last year and the more chemistry he gets with his receivers, the better he will be this season. He has 2 huge games after the bye against 2 terrible defenses, so we’ll know a whole lot more about Mark, the offense and the Jets after week 10.
-
Funny stuff. Your best assessment of Sanchez is that he faces weak pass defenses in the coming games. That inspires confidence.
-
The sad part is we face 4 ferocious pass rush teams in the second half. Eagles, Giants,Broncos and the skins. All have close to 18 sacks if not more. This is what gives Sanchez trouble is the heat! As I mentioned, we are not out of the woods by far. As long as the oline keeps geling and we avoid the injury bug on the line and we can run the ball, we have a good shot, but I am not quite ready to pop the champagne.

Tomorrow,an excellent day of football.Go Skins and Steel men!

Bent/Bassett, why in the world is our overall pass offense 2nd? I don’t understand this statistic whatsoever!
