Picking Up the Pieces

by Daniel Marcus on November 14th, 2011 at 1:27 pm

Obviously there will be no game balls today as the Jets blew yet another golden opportunity to rise to take control of the AFC East standings. Now it is almost virtually impossible for the Jets to secure a home playoff game, barring some unforeseen collapse by the Patriots. I don’t want to dwell on the debacle that was last night’s game, although it was a lot closer than the score would indicate. There will almost certainly be some widespread panic among Jets Nation today but before any of you decide to jump ship, lets step back and take stock of where we are.

Despite obviously squandering a huge opportunity there is still a lot more football to be played and it starts on Thursday night in Denver. The Jets can’t spend too much time licking their wounds because the quick turn-around after a deflating Sunday night loss has all the familiar hallmarks of a “trap game.” The Jets next three games are against fairly mediocre teams (Denver, Buffalo, and Washington) and should, at least on paper, be able to win all three. Yes, last night was ugly but the Jets didn’t play terribly, in fact the defense was down-right dominant for the majority of the game. Having said that here are a few things that worry me about last night’s loss to the Patriots:

Neverland Sanchez:

This was the year the “Sanchize” was supposed to come into his own and take the reins of this team but it has yet to be seen whether he can do it. Sanchez has arguably taken a step back this year as he is still having trouble putting together four quarters worth of decent football and he still has a propensity for making dumb decisions. Over his three seasons as the Jets signal-caller, Sanchez has shown flashes of greatness but has been terribly inconsistent and has shown a lack of maturity in his decision making and taking care of the football. If the Jets are to have a shot of taking back this division Sanchez will have to start becoming more of an asset than a liability.

Pass Rush/Tackling:

I think Kyle Wilson needs to start giving private tackling lessons to his teammates because he seems to be the only guy who knows how to wrap someone up. Missed tackles has been an under the radar problem for this team for a while and it showed last night when the famously immobile Tom Brady was shedding Jets tackles with ease and that was when he had pressure on him. Brady felt virtually no pressure all night even when the Jets would send the house and he was able to use Rex’s aggressive play-calling against him as there was almost always someone wide open when the defense dialed up extra pressure. If you are looking for an example, look at both of Ochocinco’s catches, we’re talking about a guy that can’t run a route to save his life this year and he torched the secondary because he was WIDE OPEN.

Blueprint for Playing Rex:

Just as the Jets provided the league a blueprint for beating the Patriots last year in the playoffs, the Patriots may have returned the favor yesterday. The Patriots offense was stifled for the majority of the game until they began to run their “hurry-up” offense which kept the Jets off balance and did not allow Rex to use his sub packages. It could be that the defense was just worn down because of dumb turnovers and the offense’s ineptitude that put them back on the field after just forcing the Patriots’ offense off the field. This will have to be a wait and see type of thing but the hurry up was very effective yesterday but something tells me Rex and his defensive think-tank will find a way to get it corrected.

Mother Folker:

I know have one foot off the Nick Folk band wagon but that could just be emotions talking as he has only missed two field goals this season. I also admit that the offense should have taken care of business and put that ball in the end zone but if you are an NFL kicker, you have to make 23 yard field goals against the Patriots, its as simple as that. Folk is far from the problem here, but it may be something to keep an eye on (probably not).

*I know I said there wouldn’t be any game balls today and there won’t but Jamaal Westerman does deserve some type of recognition for his play yesterday so I’m going to give him a hypothetical game ball.

Kyle Wilson got BURNED by Branch on that last TD. Not a special move, KW took a terrible angle, dove too early, and completely whiffed.

  2. avatar deuce4417 says:

lots of problems yesterday,…. but…. we ran for over 100 without even trying. why in the world would you get pass happy when we were getting 4 yards a run?

shotty, here is some math for you if you run the ball 3 times for 4 yards each that gives you 12 yards, that gives you a first down.perhaps this newfound basic addition will help your gameplans

    • avatar David says:

Rushed well in the first half, and got a lot of garbage time rushing yards, but eventually when you’re behind and the clock it ticking down, you have to give up the ground and pound. Besides, this is the worst passing D in the league. They’ve other QB’s look like all-pro’s.

  3. avatar Private Jet says:

The Jets tend to go on a losing streak after a bad loss like this and it wouldn’t surprise me if they lose to the Broncos Thursday night. On the bright side, I think it will mean there’s less chance that Shotty’s coming back for the next season. One can only hope.

    • avatar Nick (Aflac Sucks) says:

I we lose 3-0 vs Denver would that be enought to get Shotty fired? NOT saying I want it to happen, just wondering if there is ANY situation which would get him fired in season.

Like, losing 3-0 to Denver should do it no?? I think even Brenden would call for his head at that point.

      • avatar Private Jet says:

I have heard that Shotty’s here because of his dad and that there’s no chance Woody’s gonna fire him mid-season. So, the best we can hope for is that he won’t get a contract extension.

        • avatar wunky says:

I would agree that it’s extremely unlikely that Schotty will be fired mid-season — because there is no way they bring in a new OC with a new gamebook anyway. So they still have to pay him if fired, you aren’t replacing him, let him stand there and look pretty — but marginalize his responsibilities to almost nothing. Playcalling goes to Callahan or Moore from the booth. Though on second thought, Schotty calls plays into his mic with the plays in front of his mouth — would he still do that for show?

      • avatar Nep Oznat says:

Nope. That wouldn’t do it either. He’d just say it was everybody else’s fault not Brian’s.

    • avatar wunky says:

The two biggest bridge jumping reactions by commenters I can remember both came after losses just like this. In 2009 the Jets were 4-5 and had a chance to get back in the race, but the Patriots went up 24-0 en route to a 31-14 thrashing, Sanchez threw four picks, and Rex cried after the game. Season over. Other than the fact that they won 7 of their next 8 games to get to the title game. The other was last year, when the same Patriots beat them down 45-3. Though the lost to the Dolphins the next week, they won 4 of the following 5 to get to the title game.

We can only hope that this year’s nail-in-the-coffin loss to the Patriots starts a similar streak as the first two years under Rex.

      • avatar Nick (Aflac Sucks) says:

Isn’t this what you said after the Ravens loss THIS year? Do you get two of these in one year??

        • avatar wunky says:

We’ll see. But yes, that was another lesser time that we were written off by our own fans and reversed it a few weeks later. Other times were the Falcons loss in 09 and the Bears loss last year — so it has happened multiple times, some — like the Ravens and Bears and Falcons each year — to lesser degrees than the three Patriot embarrassments.

  4. avatar hank/naples says:

Last year Belichick swore that he will never again be beaten by Blimpy….you can take that to the bank!!!!

And that is punishment for NOT kissing his rings!!!!

    • avatar JetsFan4Life says:

I’m convinced you’re a closet Pats fan, come out of the closet Hank, you’re no better than the Pat fan trolls that show up here occasionally …as bad as Rex got outcoached last night he’s done far more for this team, it’s standing in NY, and Jet fan base in general, in his short tenure, than any other coach in recent Jet history. Yeah, he’s a bit too loud and proud at times, but his record has been to date a winning one.

    • avatar njdpelc says:

Hahahahah. If you really think Rex will never beat bb again you’re a nut. Football can go either way everygame.

  5. avatar GlockNSoul says:

    Our needs:

    (1) New OC (I can’t help but think Schotty’s holding Sanchez back)
    (2) Safeties that have even a modicum of NFL athleticism
    (3) Someone (anyone?) who can rush the passer without dialing up exotic blitzes
    (4) OL depth

    • avatar JetsFan4Life says:

As to #1 I’ll echo that, although of course everyone was thinking again, “wonderful game Schotty” following last week…also agree to 2-4

      • avatar Brian says:

I for one was not thinking that Shotty’s game was great last week vs Buffalo. The only great things were, the defense being stellar, and the offense executed the piss poor plays our stupid OC called. He is horrible and I think Sanchez will be better when Shotty is gone. Lets hope Woody listens to the fans and tells Shotty to hit the road!

        • avatar Mark says:

I am not saying OC is good – but Sanchez IS NOT the real deal. He is not intelligent. He is not composed. He is not accurate with placement or pass speed.

  6. avatar OldGuyJetFan says:

Rage , disappointment , anger, now I’m at acceptance. Warts and all, this is the team I’ve chosen to support for 46 yrs now. Like me it has never fulfilled it’s potential, like me it has made really dumb mistakes, but like me it suffers the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and fights back against a sea of troubles. people in NY/Nj who root for the Dolphins/Steelers, Patriots did so usually out of an adolecsent need to identify with a winner.

jet fans root for the Jets because , they are us, flawed, yet maginificent in defeat and all to infrequent in Victory.
Will we ever win another Superbowl? Who knows? Will we fight back against outrageous fortune…. you bet your ass, because we are the J-E-T-S, JETS JETS, JETS, AND UNTIL I STOP BREATHING I WILL BE A NY JET FAN!

  7. avatar subwayfare says:

Westerman’s failure to bring Brady down on a play where he got to him should prevent him from getting even a hypothetical game ball.

    • avatar wunky says:

      Which play was that?

    • avatar Nep Oznat says:

You might be thinking of when Maybin bounced off Brady like a gnat off an elephant.

      • avatar subwayfare says:

Check the tape. Maybin missed low, Westerman missed high. Lucky for Westerman people will only remember the end zone/safety play.

        • avatar wunky says:

To be fair, if that is the play you are referring to, it was 3rd and 11 and Brady threw to a guy who illegally caught it in the end zone. After the 5 yard penalty they gained 10 yards and kicked a 27 yard FG. So if he sacked Brady it might have been a 37 yard attempt instead of 27 yards — not exactly damaging.

  12. avatar MachoKing says:

I am so sick of losing to the patriots and playing down to our opponenets. Somebody on this staff needs to come out and say that last night was a complete F-up.

I feel like a jerk getting excited for a game that the Jets clearly were not ready for….

  13. avatar Jeff says:

Read this on Football Outsiders, makes a ton of sense. If we kept our team in a basic formation instead of 5 or 4 wide it would have done wonders.

“Sean McCormick: The Jets offense seems designed to keep the New England defense off the ropes. They are mixing plenty of runs in with empty backfield sets where they don’t block the edges. As a result, they are ruining good drives by taking major bad plays in the form of sacks or intentional grounding calls. If the Jets ran a short passing game out of base personnel or played predominantly three-wideout/singleback sets, it sure looks like the Pats would have a hard time stopping it. But instead they insist on perpetuating their schizophrenic “We are a power running team! We are going to spread the field and make something happen!” offense. Strange.”

  14. avatar M EaZii says:

what happened to ground and pound? were we down by 3 scores in the first half? why were we passing so much? wtf is wrong with you schoty? did you not see greene gaining 4-6 yards almost every carry? o0o and the only problem i had with the defense is tackling, we had brady sacked at least 3 times and he brushed off the tackles…and why the hell wasnt revis on welker all game long? ughhhh wtf mannn im so pisssed off! if we loose on thursday night we definitely are not making the playoffs

  15. avatar Eric says:

    Again with the Schotty stuff??

Guys… he doesn’t have a quarterback who can consistently complete passes. The first drive of the 3rd quarter against a defense with scrapheap DB’s he does what EVERYONE has been crying for him to do… he opened up the passing attack. It’s just too bad his QB goes through stretches where he can’t hit the street from the sidewalk.

You can replace Schottenheimer, but it’s just going to be the same script with the next OC. The Jets need a QB, because #6 isn’t the answer.

    • avatar M EaZii says:

i dont know what game you were watching but sanchez did not lose us the game, he played well, not good enough to get us the W but he played well.. our run game would have won us the game last night but schotty wants to make sanchez look like rodgers or peyton in that empty backfield…. he is mark sanchez, not aron ridgers or peyton manning

      • avatar joey boy 79 says:

        +1

      • avatar wunky says:

Yeah — we may have been calling for him to throw against this defense, but it doesn’t mean you do it with an empty backfield and five wideouts. That’s not Sanchez’s strength. Schotty tried to create matchup problems but it only put Sanchez back into panic mode when they sent a blitz. They were getting good yardage on the ground — where was the play-action? I would argue that every single pass Sanchez should make this season should be off play-action, other than the quick slants he is good at throwing.

    • avatar OldGuyJetFan says:

Unfortunately you are right, Sanchez is wildly inconsistent in his accuracy, good for stretches, sometimes whole games, but then he starts getting high and throwing behind. Gotta be a mechanics thing , hopefully correctable, but somethings gotta happen.

  16. avatar Dave says:

Schotty needs to go. The offense has made no strides in become more consistent since he has been the OC. I’m not exactly a football guru so i have no idea if its all the players’ fault, but still. its been the same story this many seasons in a row. maybe giving him the boot won’t fix anything, but i can’t imagine keeping him around will accomplish anything either

  17. avatar JAC says:

#1 – Did you really think the defense was dominant for the majority of the game? Were we both watching the same game? Did they ever generate any pass rush? Receivers and Tight ends were open all day long.

#2 – I believe that was Maybin who missed Brady, not Westerman.

#3 – Sanzhez HAS taken a large step backwards this year, which is further compounded by the fact that this is the year that most QB’s really start to blossom and “figure it out”. This scares me to death, because this is the QB we have all counted on to lead this team for the next 7 to 10 years. It would be devastating to have to start this process all over again.

    • avatar M EaZii says:

#1- the defense was not dominating the pats offense but they sure as hell did their job in holding the pats “potent” offense to 13 points at the half
#2- doesnt matter who it was, if you get to brady you got to knock him on his ass, nothing more nothing less
#3- Sanchez has not taken a step backwards, he is not losing us any games like he has in the past…he is just not ready to take full reigns of the offense yet

    • avatar joey boy 79 says:

It dont have to start over again. The team should just make up their mind what they want out of him and give the necessary tools and means, like a solid line, and another RB who can compliment green and pound ALL game long if necessary. Also another deep threat wr. As far as I am concerned, we have only one credible WR in Holmes who is always doubled. Plax days of being a threat between the 20S is over. Look at how much more effective Sanchez was with JC/BE! Also , we must stick to an offensive game plan that works into Sanchezs strenghs, play action, short to intermediate passes and a relentless ground attack.

  18. avatar JayM says:

If Schotty is so brilliant why was LT on the field at the end of the game?

After watching Sanchez last night his accuracy cost the Jets a TD. Holmes had to bend backwards to catch the pass from Sanchez. If the pass was halfway decent he could of walked into the end zone.

I’d rather change the OC then get a new QB right now, Sanchez is not improving under Schotty in fact he’s getting worse. Time to find out if Sanchez can take this team to the next level because it does not look he can right now

  19. avatar nickballs2000 says:

    TOM MOORE PLEASE

  20. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

I got to say after 37 years of cheering for this team I’m really starting to get tired of cheering for a bunch of losers! This collapse feels like the team has grown tired of the current coaches (and possibly Rex too).

Now I would hope Shotty goes by the end of the season or sooner (we can only hope), but if he does get fired who would be the best option for Rex to bring in because the coaches on staff are not good enough in my opinion otherwise we would have seen a change by now!

    • avatar wunky says:

I don’t think the reason the team has not replaced Schotty is at all based on there not being a better potential playcaller on staff right now. If he were to get fired they would 100% not bring in someone new, they would let Callahan (or Moore) take over in all likelihood, until the offseason.

  21. avatar G says:

I think the argument that this loss isn’t devastating because we showed we can rebound from last year’s 45-3 loss is misplaced. It totally overlooks the fact that the 45-3 loss last year WAS ultimately costly because it hurt our chances to win the division and gain home field advantage in the playoffs. You simply can’t expect to go on the road in the playoffs for 3 weeks in a row against teams like the Steelers and Pats and make it to the Super Bowl. It’s just too hard. People point to the Giants winning three road games in 07, but they didn’t have to go to Foxboro AND Heinz field to do it, and let’s face it, I’m sure the Jets would have to do that if they made the playoffs as a wild card this year. The Pats and Steelers are ALWAYS standing in the way to the Superbowl in the AFC it seems.

The Giants beat a lousy Bucs team, a choke-artist Cowboys team and an old man Favre in a coin-flip type of game. The Packers did it last year, but they have Aaron Rodgers, and I’d still consider their Eagles/Falcons/Bears route much more doable than any combination of the Pats/Steelers on the road.

In the AFC these days, you’re almost guaranteed to have to go through New England and Pittsburgh to get to the promised land as a road team, and thats too much to ask in consecutive weeks.

So, regardless of this team’s impressive bounce back last year, this loss last night was devastating. We NEED to win the division one of these years and get home field advantage, at least make it feasible to make the Super Bowl.

  22. avatar Mulligan take a mulligan says:

Schotty is awful the jets are the ony team in the nfl that don’t run screen passes

  23. avatar Nep Oznat says:

After 3 losses in a row everybody came to the conclusion that we can’t win slinging the ball around as we had Rodgers or Brady at QB. So we re-discovered our roots, began to play ground-and-pound and won 3 games in a row. Hooray! We have our identity! How stupid we were to think otherwise!! Everything is solved! The season looks bright again!

Then last night for some reason Schotty forgot all that, threw it aside and said “NO! Sanchez is Rodgers! We’re throwing the damned ball, boys! I’ll show you what a genius offensive mind I am! Forget that boring ground-and-pound crap!”

And what’s the result? One of the worst, most disgusting losses in recent memory.

All of you Sanchez bashers PLEASE keep that in mind! The poor kid is being mis-used. He is no Brady, Brees, or Rodgers. He can only give what he has.

How can a supposedly intelligent man forget what has worked just a week ago (when we all gave him props for a great game vs. Buffalo)? How dumb is it to revert to what was NOT working earlier in the season?

Schotty is CLUELESS and NEEDS TO GO! Enough already! And Rex will follow him out the door if he doesn’t stick to what he “re-discovered”. Get rid of him and pronto!

  24. avatar OldGuyJetFan says:

Levity– My 40 yr old son, showed me his Sanchez jersey at lunch time. Hey had a patch sewed over the name that simply said “PICK”
    then you saw his number
    “6″
Thats his new nickname to me, “Pick’ Sanchez

  25. avatar Just Plain Tired says:

A little perspective is in order. And I think they played horribly, but:

    1. Sanchez hit Holmes in the first half at about the 12. Holmes had a clear path to the end zone and fell. The Jets did not get in on that drive. Maybe a different game if he scores there.

    2. The Sanchez timeout at the end of the half. Turns out it burned them. Shouldn’t have, because the “vaunted” defense can’t let them go the whole length of the field for a TD with a minute and change left in the half. In my mind, the game was over right then. You just knew the Jets were not going to be able to stop them in the second half.

    3. The opening drive. Gotta get 7 there.

I think if those three first half events went differently, much different game. But that’s how it went, and they collapsed in the second half.

Failing to cover receivers at the line of scrimmage probably irked me more than anything else. That’s lack of preparation. That’s poor coaching. And that’s stupid players.

    • avatar Brian says:

I was at the game last night and I thought Sanchez played well for what its worth. He was definitely in the receivers ears in between plays and on the side, he is trying to lead this team and is struggling with it, because he can’t get over that hump just yet. Our OL was horrid at pass protection yesterday, how do we give up 4.5 sacks to one guy!! Mulligan and Eric Smith are absolute garbage and need to go now, if not then at the end of the season. Smith is like a deer in headlights, always behind in coverages and gets burned by a TE who is slower than he is. The secondary was completely confused in the Pats hurry up offense, and Revis was def getting pissed at them in between plays but nobody responded as we all saw. Greene averaging over 4 yds per carry and we don’t run, we don’t throw down field, we run the same dumb plays that everyone knows because they are predictable. Shotty must go no matter what because he is absolute garbage too. We can’t lose to Denver, we must win the next 4 games without question.

  26. avatar Real Jets fan says:

I’m usually the first guy in line to be critical of Schotty, but really, this lost wasn’t his fault. All our DB besides Revis/Cromartie totally sucked. No one could cover Rob and Wilson looked like a rookie yesterday. Defense is not Schotty’s fault The fact that our entire offensive line, including the usual mistake-free Ferguson and besides Mangold, sucked. Sanchez at times had 1-2 seconds to throw. Schotty can’t do much with his offense when the line is getting destroyed on pass plays. The fact that the Jets generated 0 pass rush most of the game and when they did, missed a lot of sack didn’t help the case anyways. Brady had about 9-12 seconds on that one throw, with two missed sacks. Disgusting play by DB besides Revis/Cromartie, horrible play by offensive line besides Mangold and no pass rush is why we lost, not Schotty. Didn’t think I’ll ever be saying this, but quit hating on the guy. He’s been great since the San Diego game, it’s just a matter of execution on the offense.

  27. avatar Just Plain Tired says:

I am perplexed by the last post. The defense was on the field most of the game BECAUSE the offense sucked. Who calls the plays where there are 5 wideouts and no protection? Who calls the plays that rely upon Mulligan blocking a DE, time after time after time? Who calls pass when it should be run, and who calls plays that telegraph the pass because there’s no back in the game? Give me a break. They saw the Giants have success throwing and they abandoned their strengths because of it. You like Shotty? How about this? The play caller has to go, whoever that is.

  28. avatar joey the jet says:

some of you guys are unbelievable,i see some are actually saying that taco had a good game, really?were we watching 2 different games?cause the game i saw lat night,he stank up the whole stadium,he sucked last week too but we played the bills, this weak he was exposed for the phony that he is,he is simply not good, not even average,it pains me to see guys like dalton and that kid from carolina,2 rooks who are playing much better than this bust of a qb you guys call the sanchize.

  29. avatar Real Jets fan says:

What excuse do they have for leaving a man wide-open during no huddles? What excuse do they have for being unable to block Rob the whole game? Never said I liked Schotty, and I have bashed him a lot over the years, but I’m not just going to bash him for the sake of it. There’s no such thing as “passes when it should be run’ or vice versa. There’s also little a OC can do about a offensive line that sucked during the pass. It doesn’t matter how beat up the Patriots secondary is if the receivers don’t have enough time to run their routes since a defender is in Sanchez’ face within 1-2 seconds. Mulligan completely sucks, I agree, but so did the usually flawless Ferguson and Wayne Hunter was even worst.

  30. avatar Geoff says:

jet moment: murder the down down the field in the opening drive, stall calling stupid plays and miss a 24 yarder. classic

set the tone for the entire game

i do have one question. holmes tore it up first drive and i dont think he saw another ball for a quarter and a half (i was in my cups). does schottenheimer script his first 30? i heard something to that effect.

snachez looked wobbly and im not defending him but our receivers, especially shonne green treated the ball like an hand grenade, same for mcknight on the punt return. and unsportsmanlike IS a cuttable offence.

  31. avatar Geoff says:

sorry, simply dyslexia on my part, s(an -na)chez)id never call sanchez that

  32. avatar Real Jets fan says:

Did you see Andy Dalton throw that INT? Or Cam Newton getting blown out 30-3? Just like all the Josh Freeman “fans”, you’re talking about good other young QBs are, despite the fact that you’ve never watched them play, just to hate on Sanchez. I’m sure you’ll rant about Sanchez if he got blown out 30-3 by the TITANS

  33. avatar Real Jets fan says:

However, I will be critical on Schotty for one thing only: The disappearance of Dustin Keller, again.

  34. avatar Just Plain Tired says:

There’s no such thing as “passes when it should be run”? When your strength is the running game, you run. This teams’ strength is not a 5 wideout offense, which I saw too much of. Sanchez didn’t read the blitz; the blockers were outnumbered; there was no back to pick it up; there was no “hot” read. It was terrible. Run the damn ball, or at least give the defense something to think about by keeping a back in there.

  35. avatar Just Plain Tired says:

I have been a Sanchez supporter, and will continue to be until he is no longer our quarterback. the fact is that he is not making any significant progress. His mistakes are repeated. He does not recognize defenses. He has no sense of where the rush is coming from. He does not make good reads. His physical talent is ahead of his mental progress at this point. And I gotta say, his demeanor gives him away like no quarterback I’ve ever seen. He is uncertain of himself.

  36. avatar Real Jets fan says:

When you’re against the worst pass defense (and makeshift defense overall) in the league, you throw the ball. Especially if their #1 corner is out.

  37. avatar Just Plain Tired says:

didn’t you just make the point. Worst pass defense in the league. No starting corners. Third string safeties. Backup coverage linebackers. And the offense STILL could not get it done in the air.

Run the ball. Kill the clock. Pass off of play action. Play to your strengths.

  38. avatar jetsman24 says:

This falls on coaching. rex, pettine, westhoff, and schotty need to take the blame here.

For some reason it seems that Schotty refuses to play teams straight up, as if we always have to use some sort of trick to beat teams. we have the guys to run the ball, so we need to run the ball. He also needs to be able to recognize which Sanchez he has in the early goings of a game. It was clear from the outset that we would see the bad Sanchez tonight, so Schotty needed to adjust his playcall to take the game out of his hands.

Westhoff: Poor kick coverage, the fumble wasn’t his fault, but it looked like we weren’t prepared for the 2-man return packages that NE used.

Pettine: Especially after last years MNF disaster, you think Pettine would know that Gronkowski and Hernandez needed to be contained. They needed to double at least one of those guys, but instead he let them rip Smith, Leonhard, and Strickland to shreds.

Rex: This game falls directly on him. It felt like the Jets simply didnt care last night, and that is inexcusable, especially for a game like this. its rex’s job to motivate this team, and if he cant motivate them for a primetime game that will likely decide the winner of the East, he needs to go. If youre going to challenge the fans to get loud and motivated, YOU NEED TO HOLD UP YOUR END OF THE BARGAIN and motivate your own team. They should refund the fans money, because the least we deserved was to have them motivated to win the game. How much does this team really want it?

Losing the division isnt the worst thing in the world, and it isnt over yet. Right now, were the first team out, and since baltimore or cincy has to lose, a jets win would have us in the playoff picture.

rex needs to step up this week and get this team ready.

How many times can we talk about Sanchez being inconsistent and having to take the next step before realizing that THIS IS WHAT HE IS.

His entire career has been us waiting for him to take the next step.. he is who he is right now.

This is one of those games where its hard to get really mad over when you stop and think, even though i was furious. After Holmes stumbled and Folk msised the FG, it just seemed like one of those nights where everything that could go wrong, would, and it did. The botched punt, and the botched recovery, missed sacks, a bogus PI call on Plax, dropped int’s, and of course the awful timeout. The one big thing I take is that after all of those mistakes, there we sat down only 7 with almost a full quarter to play. Yes the Patiots romped us after that, but with all of our mistakes and blown opportunities that we beat ourselves more than the pats beat us. Being without Pool was also a huge factor as the TE’s killed us all day.

Important to remember…assuming Pitt/Balt are both going to make it, I don’t see anyone else who will challenge us for a playoff spot.

    AFC West is a joke

AFC South we are tied with the Titans at 5-4 however they are at Atlanta this week, and also play the Saints, Texans, Bucs, and Bills. So I do not see them better than 8-8

The Bills have been exposed in my opinion, and also face a tough schedule on the road against the chargers jets and pats, although they do get miami twice, but they are certainly capable of winning one. Bills will be 9-7 at best and even that is a stretch.

So it’s left to the Bengals to beat us out, and quite simply I don’t see that happening either. They still have to face baltimore twice, travel to pittsburgh, and play the texans.

Bottom line guys, keep it in perspective. Very tough loss, but we are NOT missing the playoffs. We have two difficult games left against the Giants and Eagles (still think they can turn it around by the time we play them) 6-1 the rest of the way is more than likely, and who knows, maybe we get lucky and the Pats drop 2. All I care is that we get in, preferably the 5th seed, where we can face Oakland/SD rd 1, likely a young houston team rd 2, and then revenge vs the pats or pitt in the afccg. Have faith guys.

    • avatar brian311 says:

guys, the division race is over for all intents and purposes. i think 10 wins gets us in, and 5-2 realistic with the schedule we have. but that means we will likely have to win road games at NE and Pitt again, after an opening round game at Houston/Oak/SD. tough sledding there, that is why this game was so important.

  41. avatar Kevin says:

Also a question…If the Bills sweep the Pats, and we sweep the Bills, and somehow we end in a 3 way tie, who would take the division if miami doesn’t beat anyone?

    • avatar Brendan says:

Assuming each team goes 2-2 vs. the other two…

Next would be division record. Assuming each team beats Miami twice….

Next would be common games. This would make things messy for the Jets, since they lost to the Raiders and both the Billdos and Patsies beat them. Now, if the Jets beat the Giants, that changes things since the G-Men beat both the Pats & Billdos.

Remaining common opponents: Philly (Bills beat them; Pats/Jets yet to play), Washington (same as Philly), Denver (no one has played them yet).

I’m sure that post is all over the place, but the information’s all in there…I think.

    • avatar jetsman24 says:

does that mean we’re rooting for the pats over the bills? I couldn’t bring myself to do that.

  42. avatar Hesh says:

One thing is a certainty if the jets win a game the fans over react and if they lose they do he same. 5-4 seven games to go, all winnable, all lose able. My sense says 10-6 and the same 3 road trip to the super bowl. It’s not what we want, but I’ll sign up for it today. This is not a great team, just have to be glad the afc has no great team

  43. avatar Shetty Jets says:

Here is why Schitty is to blame: Early in the game, first down, Greene 5 yards. Second down, Shotgun 5 WRs. Wtf? You should be building the run and do play action, not resorting to a position that can have Sanchito sacked! Moreover, I would agree with this type of playcall once in a while to keep a defense honest, but this happens way too often.

In addition, I believe(or at least it seems) the Jets have yet to complete a 30+ yard pass this season.

So basically, the over-hyped defense has no offense to defend.

The Jets suck, and I can’t believe how much time I waste watching the crappy games. Eff the Jets.

  44. avatar Just Plain Tired says:

Like I said, I support Sanchez. But why make excuses that relate to his age? the Jets drafted him with little starting college experience. They annointed him the starter on day one. They pay him star money. they have no plan b as there’s no way Brunell ever plays. So they’re stuck, good day or bad day. He has no fear for his job, not that fear would force progress. But he must progress, and I just don’t see it happening.

  45. avatar NYJBeast89 says:

So I have a bit of a dilemma I have tickets for the Jets/Giants Xmas Eve game but I hardly think the Jets will be in the hunt by then so should I still pay through the nose for these tickets? After last night I’m considering passing on these tix.

  46. avatar Shetty Jets says:

I hope Fat ass Rex eats Taco.

  47. avatar joe mac says:

Our QB doesn’t look like he’s going to work out.
Colts go 0-16, draft Luck, Jets trade 3 years worth of 1st rounders, plus Sanchize and Mulligan for Manning and we win 2 SB in 3 years. I sell my HD projector, cancel DirecTV NFL package and retire to the Dutch West Indies after watching the Jets for the last 46 years.
    I can dream, can’t I?

  48. avatar Shetty Jets says:

Trade B. Schitty, Sackchez, Mulligan, Eric Schitt, Ducasse, Keller, Burress and 2 second rounders for Peyton Manning. We need this guy. Not only does he exponentially increase our chances for winning SBs, but he can mentor the young QB who is next in line. He will be come like an Aaron Rodgers, and we will have our first Jets Dynasty.

  49. avatar BGK says:

Why do I see this game thursday night ending up like our second miami game last year? we lost to the pats on that monday night massacre 45-3 and then lost to the phins 10-6, a game we were suppoe to turn it around and should have won

  50. avatar John says:

I don’t think Mark Sanchez will ever be an elite QB. However, on the right team I think he is more than adequete. But dear lord Schotty needs to start playing to his strengths. Sanchez plays best under center, using play action. He is exceptional at it and clearly feels more comfortable with it. Also, it allows the Jets offensive line a better chance with protection.
Every time the team lined up in the shotgun with an empty backfield, you could see the defense get ready to tee off. And they constantly were in Sanchez’s face (actually it was usually in his back).
In addition, why can’t any of these receivers EVER get seperation. Since both Holmes and Burress have long histories of success, you have to look at the design of Schotty’s plays and the route design.
Even when the passes are complete, the DB is always right there for the tackle.
When this team ran the old fashioned pro set last night they were gaining big chuncks of yards. It fits their personal. When they run the spread, it usually leads to disaster. What doesn’t Schotty get. It is time to stop trying to fit your personal into a scheme, and time to fit the scheme to the personal.

  51. avatar mark watson says:

WOW! You Jests fans r really wound up!The Jets did not play a terrible game,it sort of could havr gone either way.Brady won thegame just as he did last week!Oops, defense! The jets r a good team and will be heard from! The nfl is the most competitive league there is,that is why we watch it! See you in Foxboro.

  52. avatar Kevin says:

I’ll be the first to admit Schotty’s playcalling was suspect last night, as he just constantly seemed to be doing the opposite of what we should be doing. After a 3 and out to start the 2nd half, how we throw 3 straight incompletions is beyond me. IN FAIRNESS in week 5 everybody said how bad the pats pass d is and it was dumb for running so much. This week we threw it more and people complain we didn’t run enough. Bottom line we need to execute.

  53. avatar mikebe1 says:

Simply put rex was out coached 4.5 sacks by 1 player and the no huddle is what lost us the game o yea gronk 2

  54. avatar F 16 says:

Against a team we play twice a year, how is it we don’t have an answer for their no huddle? If you want to say they didn’t have the right personal on the field, how, as a coach, can you not call a time out and get the right people out there, instead of sitting back and letting the the other team gain chunks of yardage?

Sadly, it’s a blueprint to score on the Jet’s.

  55. avatar F 16 says:

P.S. Calling a timeout is cheaper then the other team scoring points.
