No Surgery for Sanchez

by Weeks on January 6th, 2012 at 10:16 am

Right now, no surgery is planned for QB Mark Sanchez, I’m told. He played with a pinched nerve in his neck/right shoulder area for the final six games. Statistically, his efficiency on deep passes declined over the final six games, possibly due to the “burner.” Sanchez did have an MRI at some point, and the course of treatment for now is rest. — Rich Cimini, ESPN NY

This would explain some of the Jets’ offensive woes in the past six weeks, culminating with the Miami debacle, still it certainly does not explain how they lost five games beforehand.

Is Chad Pennington’s brain available for a transplant?

  2. avatar deuce4417 says:

duh! if you had half a brain you could tell he was hurting which def explains his decline. again, people never take in all the facts when talking about player’s production

  3. avatar mike francesser says:

Well let’s try to make sure this doesn’t happen again next season. Fix the line.

  4. avatar Brendan says:

I suffered a pinched nerve in high school. My entire arm would randomly go numb (sometimes in the middle of a play). Hopefully Mark’s wasn’t that serious, but it does confirm that he wasn’t 100%.

    • avatar spent says:

Yeah, I bet that numb arm wasn’t caused by a pinched nerve…

    • avatar greg sec 336 no more says:

I always wondered how the mildest of hits would send him to the sideline holding his arm, which dangled from his shoulder… I would think he broke his elbow, but then all of a sudden he was fine (numbess wore off). That had to hurt and hopefully it heals on it’s own.

We all saw there was something wrong. Why wasn’t Brunell given a shot in those games when it was clear Mark couldn’t throw df accurately?
I bet Brunell would have done a food job. But if the coaches don’t think Brunell can outplay Sanchez at half strength, then it’s more proof Schotty sux.

    • avatar deuce4417 says:

brunell whould have been in a caskit with that o line protecting. we don’t have a #2 QB on the roster we have a player coach. that needs to be fixed in the offseason. the team did the best with what they had to work with and that was sanchez alone

  7. avatar johnl says:

vlad gave up a half a sack this year….he also played about 37 seconds in one game this year

  8. avatar tish says:

Sack list is very informative, but it needs to be expanded to include pressures allowed to provide a more comprehensive picture. I’m afraid that the additional information will be even more of an indication of how lousy the line performed.

    • avatar Bent says:

35 sacks, 34 hits, 106 pressures. Last year was 24/30/93.

They actually rank in the top half. Miami was worse with 42/38/115. Chicago was much worse with 34/34/160. San Diego was 31/25/140.

PFF has Hunter with 11 sacks allowed and Brick with 8.

I do find that PFF’s stats (while I don’t always agree 100%) are more accurate than the official numbers because they often attribute the sack allowed to a direct matchup without taking into account a stunt or whatever. However, maybe the official sacks attributed some of Hunter’s sacks allowed to coverage or whatever.

      • avatar Bent says:

        Here’s some more:

        Rams 49/35/142
        Cards 44/28/176

Really the Jets weren’t that bad. In fact, if you go by sacks only, the Giants had five less so they were better in pass protection right? Nope, because they had the same number of QB hits and EIGHTY THREE MORE PRESSURES. That’s five times a game more that Manning was under pressure compared with Sanchez. And yes, they passed about the same amount (less than one attempt per game more).

  9. avatar Bent says:

I’m not sure that it’s true that his efficiency on deep passes fell off over the last six games, in fact, I’m pretty sure it didn’t.

Off topic: I was just thinking that I wonder if the Jets will pay Bart Scott’s $10K fine to the Can’t Wait/Eric LeGrand charity and that maybe it was no more than a gesture to stop the league stepping in.

  10. avatar Lam Jones says:

well, the flip side of this is another criticism of Tanny; there was no other QB in the building who could be more effective than a banged up Sanchez? I get the idea that he could play through it, and that bringing in other QBs would have tipped off their opponents, but this team was a handful of plays away from a playoff spot; and what if something else had happened to further incapacitate Sanchize?

    • avatar Bent says:

Again, like with the Turner situation, he lost a possible backup option to injury. Maybe if he was healthy, McIlroy would’ve got his shot.

      • avatar Lam Jones says:

Well, I do understand the concept of taking calculated risks with depth in a capped environment, and unlike some I realize that there is no way they can all work out. But McElroy was on IR the entire season, and we all saw what happened in Houston, how can there not be one credible alternative going into a game?

On another note, I went back to the Denver BGA:

This was a hugely disappointing performance by the offensive line. It starts with the tackles. Wayne Hunter – mostly matched up with Miller – gave up 7.5 QB disruptions, including 1.5 sacks and two hits (although both of these were blatant spearing/roughing the passer calls that the officials for some reason ignored).

Imagine the lost revenues, unhappy season ticket holders, player jobs lost etc. for a non-playoff season and then imagine that one of these hits Bent referenced caused the most important player to your franchise to underperfom. And James Harrison wonders why the NFL fines him; Woody Johnson is out millions!

        • avatar Jolly Green Mangold says:

This does bring up a good point. Wonder how much of his pinched nerve is due to him getting cracked in the spine by some of the league’s finest… ngata, miller. If it is the case the NFL should send a much longer apology note with a fruit basket. Not to mention a broken nose to boot. Come on, are we really questioning sanchez after the heaping pile of adversity he’s faced this season?

  11. avatar Bob Kole says:

OK!!!! Now if the above is true and not some attempt to deflect critism from Sanchez SHOTTY HAS GO TO GO!!!! your QB has an injury on this throwing arm and you call pass 67 times in a game?!!

    • avatar Bent says:

      71. Four ended up in penalties, but he still called those plays.

      • avatar starz31 says:

        71!? Brain = blown

        • avatar Brendan says:

Yeah, remember when Big Ben was in his first 3 years with the Steelers, the would sometimes take 4 or 5 games to pass that many times.

For instance, during Weeks 9-12 of his rookie year, he passed 75 times.

Year 2? He closed out the season with (no joke) 71 passes over his final FOUR games.

In Year 3 the Steelers went away from this model and tried to force a spread offense on Ben (who just wasn’t prepared for it yet). The result? A team that won the Super Bowl the previous season went 7-9 (6-9 with Ben starting), Ben had good individual stats (4000 yards, 21 TDs) but his QB rating was only 75.

I mean, the similarities to the Jets/Sanchez here should be very, very apparent.

The point? Schotty effed up big time.

  12. avatar brian311 says:

out of all our OL…when i look at the sack / pressure numbers i am most surprised with Brick. i wonder if he was also hurt this year, because the drop in production is stunning. he was one of the 3 best pass blocking OTs in football last year. what happened to him? to get beat by jason taylor’s corpse in week 17 is a real low-light.

  13. avatar greg sec 336 no more says:

I guess wunky’s conspiracy theory that an injury would be announced after the season was accurate

  14. avatar Screwup says:

So we got a franchise qb and in his third year play with a injury. Nice move to hurt a Career and all that money we put into him. Good move schotty when he hurts just throw a little more. It seems to work for us as it shows

  15. avatar greg sec 336 no more says:

Simms spent his first 3-4 years in the infirmary, and was largely booed and considered a bust until he was finally healthy (and started to study more).

  16. avatar Jetholes says:

How worried should we be about DeBrick? What happened to him?

  17. avatar karl hungus says:

I think you just chalk this year up to a failed experement and start building the team the right way. No training camp and a bunch of really crucial injuries to key backups and to Mangold early really screwed this team up, along with Shotty’s consistantly bad play calling.

Get rid of the cancers, get a new OC, get a new RT and lets go to training camp with a new attitude.
