Self-Scouting: Unrestricted Free Agents

by Bassett on January 17th, 2012 at 9:27 am

While free agency won’t begin until the end of February, we wanted to take some time to look at the Jets free agent lists, and write up some initial thoughts about their future status with the Jets.  Lastly, the Unrestricted Free Agents.

Bryan Thomas — Rex Ryan loves Bryan Thomas, mostly because of Thomas’s versatility.  Thomas might not be an OLB playmaker like a Terrell Suggs, but he can stuff the run, set the edge, cover the pass, and even rush the passer a little.  Mike Pettine and Rex Ryan both said repeatedly this season that they missed his versatility once he was injured and out for the year.  Thomas is in the late stages of his career, so the Jets might try and lowball an offer to him to see if he will stay.  Ultimately it might come down to Thomas.  Take the money elsewhere, or return to the Jets at a discount?
Likelihood of return — Moderate

Sione Pouha — Despite a quiet start of his career, Pouha has become an invaluable part of the Jets defense.  The Jets have drafted what should be his eventual replacement in 2011 in Kenrick Ellis, but the team could still use Pouha and his run-stuffing skillset for a few more years.  Pouha is a business man and is smart enough to know that this is his best chance at a high dollar deal, but seems to have the loyalty to want to return to New York. The Jets and Pouha will likely strike a modest deal to keep the NT around for a few more years.
Likelihood of return — High

Jim Leonhard — Leonhard took a discount to come play with the Jets in the first place, now two season ending injuries later, he’s a new father and staring at what will likely be his last bet shot at an NFL contract.  Leonhard’s a safety that plays bigger than his frame and who has been an important part of the Jets defensive successes in the past three years.  Leonhard will most likely have to take whatever the best offer is that comes his way, and for various reasons, I don’t know if that contract will come from the Jets.
Likelihood of return — Low

LaDainian Tomlinson — Tomlinson was clearly disappointed at the way his teammates treated their Quarterback, and that has to leave a bad taste in his mouth.  The Jets have three young running backs on their roster between Shonn Greene, Joe McKnight and Bilal Powell that would appear to have futures with the Jets.  LaDainian is contemplating retirement, and might do just that.  The way the season ended has to be hard, and Tomlinson is also still chasing that elusive championship.  He’ll either retire, or end up where the money and role is right and he thinks he stands a good chance of contending.
Likelihood of return — Low

Robert Turner — You have to feel bad for Robert Turner.  Turner wants desperately to be a starter, and this year would have been his best chance to showcase his abilities (with Mangold’s injury) it if he hadn’t been injured in the preseason.  The Jets seem set with Slauson and Moore at their Guard spots.  But the Jets are going to be cap conscious and Moore holds a $3 million savings for the team was to cut him this offseason.  Maybe Turner returns to the Jets as a starter, but as an UFA he’ll try his best to find a starting job, despite his injury, before returning to the Jets on a short deal.
Likelihood of return — Moderate

Kevin O’Connell — Greg McElroy might have made some questionable comments a few weeks ago, but in all likelihood McElroy will be vying #2 QB for the Jets in 2012.  There’s no need to pay a veteran backup like O’Connell whose promise has worn thin.
Likelihood of return — Low

Mark Brunell — Players have been anonymous, but open in saying that they thought Brunell didn’t pose enough of a challenge to Sanchez.  Brunell was a smart option when they needed a safe backup to not dangle over the head of their young QB.  If the Jets want to keep him on, they need to do so as a coach.
Likelihood of return — Low

Plaxico Burress — Plaxico might be physical and have a great span to reach out for passes, but it’s obvious he is past his prime and isn’t enough help to the Jets “star” receiver to bring him back.  The Jets need someone who can command the occasional double team, and that’s not Plax … especially between the 20s.  Plax was very helpful in the Jets red zone offense, but not enough to justify the price tag.  The Jets will be bringing back Jeff Cumberland and it’s likely Patrick Turner will return too.  For the Jets, that should be enough of the big-bodied targets … unless Plax is willing to retun on a veteran minimum deal as a third receiver … maybe.
Likelihood of return — Low

Nick Folk — Folk has been consistent for the Jets, and has been able to use the new kickoff rules to his advantage.  The Jets will likely try and bring back Folk on a short, low-money deal.
Likelihood of return — High

Brodney Pool — I get why Rex Ryan has mixed feelings about Pool, and didn’t make him the priority in the offseason at the safety spot.  Pool has the coverage and physical skills, but seems to more routinely blow coverage due to mental mistakes than their other safeties.  Don’t mistake me, Eric Smith gets burnt, but it’s not because he doesn’t know his role, he just can’t fill it.  Pool will be someone that the Jets might have to just “think of England” until they can come up with some better option.
Likelihood of return — Moderate

Donald Strickland — Strickland was a player that the Jets brought in because they lost Drew Coleman, not for any real love of his Strickland’s skillset.  With much more time to scour the free agent lists, they’ll find someone they find more suitable and with more upside to fill the fourth corner spot.
Likelihood of return — Low

are lowery and coleman under contract this year? i’d like to see the jets bring dwight back

  2. avatar deuce4417 says:

sione, leonard and turner are the only ones i’d bring back

    • avatar roof says:

      an Plaxico……..JK

    • avatar jerk says:

POUHA is a definit we desperately need him back, he’s a top DT in the league. That should be our primary player to bring back. You also forgot Maybin, we also need maybin very badly and I feel like he has taken some huge strides and will only get better with a full offseason. Turner should also be signed if healthy. As for everyone else I think let the rest of them go, LT will be missed and I would love for them to bring him back if he would take the minimum.Leonard is a liability in coverage and we need a fresh start at both safety positions. we get 2 new safeties and add a pass rusher to go opposite Maybin were back to being a top 3 defense.

  3. avatar JetsFan4Life says:

Having seen the FA safety lists (and currently available draft class) looks like market for a top end Safety is really thin. Would be nice to get Landry or Williams but wonder how much they’ll cost, and whether we’d be able to afford the cap space vs our other needs, e.g,. vet OL to replace Hunter.

  4. avatar deuce4417 says:

idon’t care what it costs get landry. he shou8ld be out top priority

  5. avatar Bent says:

BT owes us a year at minimum salary IMO.

Remember in 2007 he ADMITTED he got complacent and didn’t give it 100% despite getting a new contract after his 8-sack season?

I’d be devastated if Pouha didn’t return, but other than that, I actually feel like the ones Bassett said are low probability of returning are the more likely to return!

    • avatar JetOrange says:

BT made 3.7 last year, I’m thinking 1.7 would get it done. OLB is a real problem, I believe the Jets will use there first round pick, but still , no one could set the edge when BT went down

      • avatar Bent says:

I disagree. Pace moved into BT’s role and did it pretty much as well as BT had. The real issue was the downgrade from Pace to Westerman/McIntyre setting the opposite edge. However, Westerman (a big problem at first) got better as the season went along and by changing up Scott’s role and occasionally involving Mauga in 3LB sets, they overcame it and actually hardly gave up any big outside runs over the second half of the year compared to the first half.

        • avatar JetOrange says:

Thank you for bringing insight once again to this forum. I’m not sure that Westerman improved that much against the run, but I do believe that Mauga will have a bigger role. But once again you bring facts into the discussion. If the Jets were willing to bring Jason taylor in as reserve, OLB,wouldn’t Thomas qualify at a 1.7 level ?

  6. avatar Johnnyjetson says:

Thomas: only as depth at minimum salary

Pouha: show the man some love Jets!

Leonard: as a backup for minimum

LT: dude is done…when you start thinking aut retiring then your already retired

Turner: did i hear you mention cutting moore for turner? Do you really want wayne hunter 2.0? Leave moore alone if anything replace slauson.

    Oconnell: see ya

Brunnel: should have been gone last year

Plax: never wanted him from the start…waste of 3 mill.

Folk: no thanks. Im never confident when he lines up for a field goal.

Pool: as a backup at minimum

    Strick: see ya

Also is the punter signed for next year because he needs to go…

  7. avatar Johnnyjetson says:

Bent the jets are going t try to restructure sanchez contract…what kind of numbers do you feel the jets are going to try to accomplish and what will that do for the cap?

  8. avatar Nick says:

Other then pouha does anyone really give a damn if any of these guy’s return?

  9. avatar Led says:

I don’t think either Leonard or Thomas are going to get many big offers. They’re on the wrong side of 30, they’re not difference makers and they’re unlikely to create “buzz” from a marketing perspective. It seems to me they’re far more valuable to the Jets than to other teams. In a sane world, they’d be back with the Jets at a moderate price.

  10. avatar Gee Dawg says:

Ok Who should go and stay?

    EASY…

Keep Pouha and Folk. Everyone else can leave their helmet at the counter. Thanks but we need to upgrade substantially. Looking at the Giants play, its clear that we need some more overall team speed and we need to start building through the draft to avoid cap issues.

We need a pair of safeties (probably a draft pick and a Free agent), a right tackle, a pass rushing LB, possibly a new ILB, and a good QB to push Sanchez who has not been challenged. This year we need performance to dictate who starts not what draft slot your were chosen at.

Also, its time to start rotating Bilal Powell and Kenrick Ellis into the starting lineups. Add to that Vlad..if the dude is a bust we need to know THIS year….if not then start him..he is a big dude. Hopefully a training camp will benefit him and get him to a starters role. He needs to step up and fill that gap on the OL.

    G_D

  11. avatar Andrew says:

If the Jets draft an OLB at 16, I can’t see BT being back at all.

Hopefully the Jets bring in a FA safety to take over for one of the three stooges back there, and then Poole goes bye bye and Smith goes back to STs. After Leonard missed the last two seasons end I’d offer him a minimum contract and that’s that.

Folk was terrible, and Conley was worse. Must upgrade.

  12. avatar JEFFDOLFINI says:

I think Leonard will be back for cheap, Sign Pouha for a couple million a year and Thomas should come back for cheap as well. Everyone else can leave.

  13. avatar nysackexchange says:

What are the chances of bringing Braylon back? He was sorely missed this season & I think his experience of being signed to a small deal by the 49ers and subsequently let go (with them going to the NFC Championship game no less!) might make him available on the cheap. He did great things for us, had great chemistry with Sanchise, loved being in NYC and in hindsight, would have been a better signing than selfish Santonio…Thoughts?

  14. avatar Zartan says:

It’s not that Pool doesn’t know his job, it’s because he’s too quick to help a teammate that was beat instead of playing the ball. I guess it’s kinda like not knowing your job.

  15. avatar Brendan says:

Pouha deserves a good payday, it’s the only one he’s going to get during his career. It’s impossible not to see how much the fans love the guy, any time he does something 80,000 people lose their minds during home games.

Pay Pouha, he’s the heart of the defense, IMO.

Bring back Leonhard and Thomas if they’ll take minimum deals.

I like Pool. I think he is inconsistent, but could be valuable as a part-time player. Depending on his demands, I’d look to bring him back on the cheap as well.

Turner? Yes, please. Need a viable backup lineman.

Plax? I’m in the minority here, but I’d like him to come back for a year or two. It’s doubtful, but if used properly he’s still a very effective player. Him and Cumby on red-zone packages would have the defense ready to quit.

I’m not against Strickland, but I’d like to seem them either give Cole a chance to be the team’s 4th CB, or get someone with experience like Strickland, but more speed.

    • avatar Johnnyjetson says:

I was with everything you said there brendan until we reached Plax. The guy has no speed and between the 20s hes a nobody. Now if he takes the minimum to stay then im all for it as a 4th wr not a number 2.

Agreed that turner should be back but as a backup not as a replacement for moore. I would like to see a upgrade at lg but if we find a good rt then i could live with slauson. But vlad needs to go…..sorry couldnt help myself since i wasnt invloved in the conversation yesterday.

      • avatar Brendan says:

        UghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

When did Plax have speed? Ever?

He didn’t. He was effective because he runs precise routes and he’s huge. Those two things haven’t changed.

“Turner? Yes, please. Need a viable backup lineman.”

Obviously I don’t want him to replace Moore, either.

Vlad will start in the NFL one day. Calling it.

        • avatar Marvel says:

The thing with Plax is that he’s so slow that he can’t get separation on a comeback route because there is zero threat of him out running a DB, they just stat in his hip. The comeback catches he did have were all spectacular because DBs don’t fear him at all.

There are so many 3rd round recievers we would be better off with. Add a “cheap” FA & we should be good.

          • avatar Brendan says:

But, he is maybe a half-step slower than he used to be. It was never the threat of him going deep that made him a force, it was basically the fact that he ran crisp routes (the threat of going deep was gone, but not running a post, slant, comeback, back-shoulder, fade). Plax is 6’5 and that gives him at least 6″ on every Cb he’d face. You can literally stare him down, and if you throw it properly he’d be the only player who could make a play on the ball.

Sanchez threw balls to Plax that would be low for Jeremy Kerley, so I can see why people wouldn’t want Plax back. But in terms of how useful he’d be, I don’t think there’s any question he’d still be a viable threat for this team. Plus, in the ground n’ pound era his blocking would be a bonus.

            • avatar Marvel says:

The bigger issue is probably our #1 WR. If Holmes plays to his contract, you could probably live with Plax as your #2.

Personally, I don’t believe in Holmes. That Philly game will never leave my mind (like the Revis non-int in that Falcons game). For the money Plax will want, and his ability, I’m definitely thinking. 3rd round reciever + Braylon.

              • avatar Brendan says:

You mean the Philly game where the entire team played like garbage? You’re only going to remember Holmes in that game?

                • avatar Marvel says:

He got it started. Helped keep it moving. Not saying we would have won, but our 10 million dollar reciever played like a bum in a must win game. He doesn’t really scream #1 receiver IMO.

This would make for a greet pole question.

                • avatar Marvel says:

Also, I know you pretty much went “all in” on Holmes last off-season. So I won’t push the issue with ya, but the guy is not a top #1 IMO.

                  • avatar Brendan says:

After what just happened? Not a great poll question, I would think. People (not saying you) are pissed at the guy and he’s dealing with some scapegoatitis.

But Holmes is a #1 receiver. His peers view him as such, and they know more than we would, I think.

                    • avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

I was not a fan of choosing Holmes over Bray…if that is what happened.

I’ve long felt that Holmes’ strengths were easier to replaced than the height offered by Braylon or receivers of his ilk. 4.5 speed isn’t crazy good, but for a 6’5″ guy it was okay. .

                    • avatar Brendan says:

                      Braylon is 6’3.

        • avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

If we are looking for a 6’5″ receiver with mediocre speed (nearly identical 40 time at the combine) let’s go with Patrick Turner. Younger, one would guess faster at this point and knows Sanchez.

        • avatar Bent says:

So will Turner. Probably next year.

          Called it three years ago.

    • avatar Mike Battle says:

      Agree on above :

leonard and Thomas just Thomas, let leonard go and FA/Draft replacment

Turner but as you say as a backup, need a FA/Draft RT

      Poole as a situational player

Plax if you can get him, some contender might want to grab a hot red zone guy like him.

Big year for two guys–Ellis and Vlad, if either can make the jump, Moore and Pouha are on the bubble. If Vlad doesnt do it this year say goodbye,

    • Sure, bring Plax back if he’s willing to play for cheap AND accept a backup role.

Dude should never have been brought in as a viable #2 in a lockout shortened offseason after being out of the game for 2 years.

      Never.

  16. avatar Marvel says:

    Bryan Thomas- Pass
    Jim- Pass
    Pouha- obvious
    LT- Pass
    O’Conell- still don’t understand why he’s around
    Brunell- Pass x 10
    Plax – Pass
    Folk- Pass
    Pool- Pass
    Strickland- Pass
    Turner- Keep

We really need some new blood/talent on this team. I pretty much passed on everyone, but we did lose/replace about 10 or 11 guys last season so it’s possible. If any of the guys I passed on come back , it should be in a minimal role.

  17. avatar R in CT says:

If I’m not driving it, I’m right at the front of the “Bring back Pouha” bandwagon!

The guy may have been the defensive MVP this year, especially with all the changes and injuries (Devito) along the d-line. Great attitude, great teammate, great off-the-field intangibles and a fan favorite. This should be done ASAP!

The rest are open to debate.

  18. avatar Nickballs2000 says:

Pouha is a no brainer. If they dont sign him back we should riot (maybe). Everyone else on that list can walk.
Leonard- great guy, plays hard, but lacks the speed and ability that we need.
    Plax- who cares
Desperately need pass rushers , safety , RT. Who else available at safety other than Landry, Griffen

  19. avatar Marvel says:

    Wait Wait Wait…

Does this mean Eric Smith is still under contract..?

  20. avatar neauone says:

NEWS FLASH : Tannenbaum to address team needs prior to the draft. I don’t expect the majority of these players back with the exception of Pouha

  21. avatar Boozer up the Middle says:

It would be interesting to know who of the guys above performed well in the locker room. Would be worth a little extra to rebuild or build on chemistry. I suspect Pouha is good chemistry guy and he’s really good on the field. Bring him back. Turner, I think not having him for the year was a much bigger problem than people think, depth on the O-line is IMPORTANT. Bring him back. BT, for the right money. I’m with Brendan, this is Vlad’s test year. I think he’ll end up replacing Moore.

    • avatar juunit says:

Doubt it. Guard is more confusing than tackle because you’ve got to work things out with the center and the tackle on either side of you. I think tackle would be easier for Ducasse to manage.

  22. avatar jvsvn says:

I expect Pouha back but I think everyone else is questionable. We had a bad year, there will be changes. Particularly on offense. Why would Sparano have any loyalty to players that underperformed this year. That’s not what he was brought in for. I expect they are going to be spending a huge amount of time evaluating the offensive FA market in an effort to bring in the guys that Sparano thinks are best suited to run his system. As a start, I would expect some new faces in the WR, OL and TE spots.

  23. avatar Thomas says:

hey brian, what would it cost to get via. trade forTamba Hali? i defiantly think that the jets should get this guy.

  24. avatar Massive says:

We should keep Pouha, Turner, Nick Folk, and maybe Brodney Pool. I’d like us to go after Michael Griffin to play safety instead of Laron Landry or resigning Jim Leonhard. We need a receiver opposite Tone that will keep him effective, and sadly, Plax isn’t that guy. Adding a good WR like Colston (I could see New Orleans letting him go to sign Carl Nicks) and Kerley improving should give us a pretty good receiving corps.

  25. avatar Nick says:

The list of things I’d like us to do before resigning Jim “ah my leg” Leonard includeds restocking the vending machines at the team complex.

  26. avatar RJ says:

Idk if anyone else agrees with me, but in the draft, if DeCastro is not available I’d like to trade down and grab Vontaze Burfict or Mark Barron. Burfict is an animal on the field; great motor. As for a rush LB, I really like Bruce Irvin from WVU. He’s a little raw but can definitely be coached up. As for a WR I like Jeff Fuller from Texas A&M or Brian Quick from Appalachian State. Both are big targets who can replace Plax (if he ends of getting let go.) Thoughts anyone?

    • avatar juunit says:

Don’t like Burfict. No football IQ and he’s really more of an athlete than a football player. No way does he tackle well enough. He gets the occasional big hit which makes people overrate him. If going ILB I’d take Hightower or Kuechly first.

Sorry Jimmy Leonard but your heart DOES NOT cover Hernandez and Gronkowski…your smallish body does and that is not good enough. Thank you for your contributions but we need height and speed for the safeties or else we will continue to play second fiddle to NE year after year…

ANd PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF God…DOn’t make any more SB proclamations….we know you predict the SB but does it have to be so public. All it does is make us targets..

  29. avatar oldskool says:

In a foolish attempt to bring out the haters I point out that almost all of the Jets best players were drafted or developed by Mangini. Out of this list of FAs, the most important are pouha and Thomas, both of whom were Mangini projects who worked out very well. Ditto with the rest of the team. Let Mangini handle player personell.

  30. avatar Brendan says:

I would just like to take this opportunity to hop in my time machine for a moment.

    The time: 12 months ago.

The discussion: “Pouha is old and needs to be replaced”

My argument: TREAD ON THE TIRES BROOOOOOOOOOO

    I win.

  31. avatar PG says:

We should spend all our FA money on Goldson from the 49ers and Griffin from Titans, maybe try and keep Leonard as a cheap backup if we can..cut smith, let pool walk happily.. safety has gotta be one of the cheaper positions to address via FA compared to our other glaring needs, mainly OT and OLB.. With the safety position addressed via FA we can focus on drafting either an OT or OLB rounds 1 and 2 depending on how the chips fall.. then WR and RB in later rounds.. we should not invest high picks on skill players cause they will be worthless if we don’t upgrade over Hunter somehow at tackle, that much was proven this year..

  32. avatar oldskool says:

I think if you compare Mangini’s drafts to Rex’s drafts there is going to be no argument about who is better at evaluating pro potential. Mangini’s onr big mistake was Gholston,a huge bust, but under the circumstances it was unavoidable.

    • avatar Brendan says:

I think the big mistake you’re making here is assuming either coach is that much responsible for their picks.

      • avatar oldskool says:

I think you can see their influence in the picks. Mangini wants intelligent players who are leaders on their teams. There is a strong “character” component, which often makes a difference in the games. Rex doesn’t get that. You can see it in their picks.
I think Mr T has a big role to play. When Mangini told him that Revis was the best player, Mr T had to find a way to get him.

    • avatar juunit says:

Mangini’s only mistake was being a crappy coach.

  33. avatar oldskool says:

Regarding RT, if you remember it was a weak spot for the Jets a few years ago. Mangini picked up Damian Woody, a guard/center, and converted him to tackle. A big risk in the minds of many, Mangini figured it was a fit.
My point is that some people got the knack and others don’t. Rex has many strengths but this is not one of his best skills.

    • avatar Brendan says:

      Tannenbaum, I would assume.

      • avatar oldskool says:

Come now B. He wasn’t even a tackle. They looked at him very closely, M thought he was a good fit, Mr T had to go get him.

        • avatar Brendan says:

So, a defensive backs coach was so good at evaluating players that he saw a lifelong C/G who played one season at tackle in the opposite conference was the reason the Jets signed Woody? Dunno, isn’t that what teams have a scouting department for?

  34. avatar Gee Dawg says:

Who cares about Mangini v. Rex. Let’s concentrate on the future.

Bottom line is we need mega safety help…we need two new starting safeties. To keep any of the three (leonard, pool, Smith) is basically maintaining a status quo that did not work. Gronk and Hernandez will CONTINUE to rape the Jets year after year unless we concede that Leonard and Smith/Pool are not the answer. Once conceded, we may then move on and replace both safety spots with faster and taller options. As currently constructed, TEs will continue to kill us.

    G_D

    • avatar Kyle says:

Gronk and Hernandez are killing everybody. Not sure anybody has the ability to cover these guys. We’ll see what Reed does this weekend. I think it’s more up to Rex and Pettine to scheme a way to take these guys out. So far, no dice.

  35. avatar oldskool says:

I was playing golf one day with a guy out of the Giants front office and I mentioned my theory that in some ways the Jets miss Mangini. This guy shook his head and said only that Mangini is a very difficult man.

  36. avatar ryan says:

i think they should bring plax for another year because he has help us alot with the tds and the redzones, we also need l.t. back, he was a excellent 3rd down back, im not liking greene right now

  37. avatar Dooley51 says:

Should we try and sign Kareem McKenzie to replace Hunter?

Schotty divided the offense. The defense wasn’t divided.

            • avatar Nick says:

True, they were united in hating the offence.

            • avatar joeyboy79 says:

OK Holmes was a team player lol. He quit in the huddle and dissed Sanchez at team meetings, PLEASE! He was a cancer.

              • avatar Brendan says:

Hey! An inaccurate summary of pre-existing events! New territory!

Holmes did NOT diss Sanchez in meetings. Their argument (the one where Holmes stormed out) was about SCHOTTY.

Holmes likes Sanchez. If he didn’t he wouldn’t have signed a contract to play for 1/2 a decade with this team.

                • avatar davidus1 says:

Where did you get the idea that the argument was about Schotty? The disagreement as I understand it is Sanchez tried to push the WRs to work harder or stay later in practice, or something to that effect, and Holmes said “Do I have to be here for this?”

Obviously that’s being interpreted as Holmes being a premadonna who doesn’t want to work hard.

Personally, I’m not going to rush to judgement without knowing all of the facts on Holmes.

                  • avatar Brendan says:

The articles I read all said that Holmes and Sanchez started arguing during a players-only film session, and then didn’t show up to the next days players-only film session.

Holmes is not against extra work. I am fairly positive that stories came out last year how Sanchez and Holmes stayed after practice pretty often to work on their timing.

I to this very second do not believe Holmes dislikes Sanchez. Why would he sign a deal that goes through the prime of his career if he didn’t believe in Sanchez? He’s said himself how his greatest goal is to make the HOF, so he’d likely need to pick a QB he felt gave him that chance, right?

Look, I know Holmes is not the greatest person to play football. Not even close. But he does care about winning, and Rex has gone on the record as saying Holmes is the team’s “biggest cheerleader” on Sunday. The dude got frustrated, he’s an elite playmaker who doesn’t get to make plays because he doesn’t get the opportunities. How is Holmes’ incredible route-running skills, his elite close-space quickness, and his big-play ability being effectively used by running 4 yard stops and dummy fly routes?

Sparano wants to run the ball and take shots deep. Holmes is capable of thriving in such an offense, as a play-action fake that gets the CB to bite for .0000001 seconds leaves Holmes with the window he needs to get open. He really is that good at running routes and reading the defenders covering him. But Schotty refused to use his receivers in their most fitting roles. Holmes is a big-play game-changer. He was being used as a possession slot receiver, basically.

This is what leads me to think it was Holmes and Sanchez battling about the offense. Sanchez completely supported his coordinator, so when Holmes openly questioned him in a players meeting (and let’s be honest, does anyone think Holmes could watch more than 5 plays where he was a decoy without saying something), Sanchez probably supported his coach. Now that element has been removed, and replaced with a guy who is going to make the offense toe the line, I expect there to not be issues like this anymore.

You ever hear of the phrase quit when your behind?

that said, agreeing with joeyboy79 is starting to feel like agreeing with hank. Things are bad and suddenly the guy is here posting 20 times a day.

    Braylon > Plax

  40. avatar joeyboy79 says:

Lets just have a good draft and plug some holes in FA. Whats done is done. All we can do is learn and move forward.

  41. avatar oldskool says:

2011 was a great year for TEs. Gronkowsky is a monster. Also Graham on NO. Vernon Davis had a super game last week. I remember when he was drafted. A Gholston type guy, off the charts physical abilities, but very limited pro-player skills. Multiple coaches tried to tease out some game day productivity from him, and… we have a winner!
I like our TE. We could use him better. I think Tom Moore helped this year. I expect Sparano will use him. Wish he was 6’7″.

  42. avatar JEFFDOLFINI says:

Brendan would rather have our team keep Holmes instead of doing what is right for the team, just to prove a point. Braylon stretches the field and Holmes obviously does not. We WAY overpaid that guy. This could end up being almost as historical as Ghostman.

  43. avatar bob says:

Bryan Thomas was a first round pick and he,s still can play at a high level just like the jets… really are this dumb not to resign him…….and what will we replace him with some one new in this defense…. no wonder with this kind of thinking we stink!….this is not the year to draft an olb.dammit.

    • avatar Nick says:

BT is past his prime, hence he is dead weight to Mr. T. He will be offered an insultingly low contract, that he will feel compelled to reject, and that’s that.

Shortly thereafter Brendan will tell us how much he currently sucks.

This is how it is with jets vets….unless they think they may want to take a closer look at the whole leadership issue.

  44. avatar damion says:

The draft is loaded with DE/OLB prospects this is the best year to draft an OLB with SPEED. Lavonte David! makes plays all over the feild.

  45. avatar Tommy says:

how can we pass on jim? yes maybe health issues but the jets defense is totally different (in a bad way) without Jim in the lineup. defiantly need to keep him

  46. avatar Jeff says:

Let me see- undersized white player, fits well in a system. A sort of coach on the field. Good character guy- sounds like Jim Leonard is a BB type of player

  47. avatar Kyle says:

BE was cut before the season was over. Couldn’t have been that good. Are people here saying they know more than the 9ers front office and coaching staff who are currently going to the NFC championship?

  48. avatar YOOOOOOOOOO1 says:

I would love to know the FO plans on fixing the lockroom situation? Whether what was said is true or not, where there is smoke there is fire. Sanchez cannot possibly take control of the locker room. LT gone another vet leader disappears! The only possible leader on this team left is Mangold! I think we are in for big trouble? A lot of holes to fill! Tanny sucks in the draft!

  49. avatar rusty sanchez says:

at least gronks and hernandez contracts are both up at the sametime and will be hard to sign both… i dont think hernandez is even getting a mil a year at his current contract so im hopin hell be askin for more money before the 4 years are up

  50. avatar Nick says:

I think they won’t keep gronks. He is going to go for an INSANE ammount of money. THat is not their style.

That said….how do you NOT keep him?

  51. avatar Andrew says:

To say Bryan Thomas, a guy drafted in the first round in 02, (ahead of HOF Ed Reed btw) was a “Mangini project” is just a BIT of a stretch.

  52. avatar frustratedjetfan says:

The only one who’s a must is Pouha. The rest are piece-parts that float about the league every year in a game of musical chairs. Unfortunately, because of two years of season ending injuries Jim Leonard now falls into this group.

IMO if we can find younger talent with a higher upside to fill most of these positions, that would definitely be the way to go. The GM should gather the best combo of heady vets who can be steady roll players & a bunch of speedy kids who are hungry and be done with it. The name of the game is building for the future w/o mortgaging the present.

  53. avatar Frustrated Jets Fan says:

Why retain Nick Folk? Is there anyone here that can say they are comfortable with him kicking a 45 plus yard field goal? The Jets are a team built on defense and field position, I think one of the biggest things the Jets fail to place importance on is a not decent, but really good, to great field goal kicker. We need an accurate kicker. Take a game like the Giants game, you need to hit that field goal before half-time. You can’t build this team the way you do and have a kicker that you gotta pray will hit a 43 yarder that isn’t directly down the middle.

  54. avatar Frustrated Jets Fan #2 says:

Lol, and for the record me I am not the same frustrated Jets fan that posted 4 minutes ago.

  55. avatar Real Jet fan says:

At JEFFDOLFINI: Please explain how keep Holmes is not right for the team and Sanchez. Yeah, Sanchez REALLY needs another year of two brand new targets.

  56. avatar nickballs2000 says:

i dont care what stats or ranks or ratings there are to defend BThomas…anyone that watches this team year in and year out, knows that hes not a high impact player. is he a nice player to have, sure i guess. But hes getting older, coming off an injury and needs to move on. We need to get younger and faster. BThomas and even Pace to an extent, havent shown me enough

  57. avatar nickballs2000 says:

we can probably stop with the “get rid of Holmes” talk… the guy aint going anywhere. Hopefully a new coordinator will get him to play nice with Sanchez.

  58. avatar jetsman24 says:

There are four real possibilities here:

    1. Pouha, BT and Jim Leonhard stay, Plax goes.
In that scenario the Jets would likely draft a receiver in Round 1 (Jeffery, Floyd).

    2. Pouha, BT and Plax Stay, Leonhard goes
We would then draft a safety (Barron)

    3. Pouha, Plax and Leonhard stay, BT goes
We would then draft OLB (Upshaw, Mercilius)

    4. Those four all stay
We would then draft an OT (Sanders, Martin)

  59. avatar frustratedjetfan says:

I’m glad Bassett has given most of these players a slim chance of remaining with us. Teams make a major mistake if they overspend on marginal roll players instead of devoting the big bucks to difference makers.

Don’t get me wrong, every team needs these guys. But always take a real hard look at how this group can be upgraded. Collectively this group can make a difference down the stretch, but don’t go giving them long term contracts for big bucks. The Jets need to upgrade this group.

    Signed the original frustratedjetfan

  60. avatar nickballs2000 says:

Folk sux as well…..he can go and take Conley with him. ridiculous

  61. avatar Randy says:

    Wish list

    1-Bring in Mathis
    2-Bring back Braylon
    3-Draft a Right Tackles 1st round draft

Those 3 moves alone make this team better. We could also use another Runningback such as Hillis.Defense will be revamped, but mostly drafted talent will fill in.We have a younger defensive line and they all need chemistry and time.

    • avatar nickballs2000 says:

i love the Mathis move. and with that team rebuilding (kinda), maybe we can get him. Love it. Mathis, 2 safeties that arent 5’7″ and White, along with a rusher….lets roll

  62. avatar kem pa sote says:

Off topic but we now have our starting Fs.alabamas. cb see kirkpatrick arrested for weed he now slips into the 16 spot were we convert him to fs.athen we trade back in the late first round on draft vontaze, hightower, curry,or whitney.it sucks if the ravens get vontaze ,the steelers get hightower,it like the d won’t miss a beat.pats draft barron,an wright our 3 biggest rivals r gonna get great value in this draft we need to hit a homerun on our first 6 picks this draft . It’s do or die in this draft

  63. avatar JEFFDOLFINI says:

    At: Real Jet fan says

Bringing back Braylon would not be a new reciever. Braylon and Mark had great chemistry and he plays hard the WHOLE GAME, imagine that………

  64. avatar Thomas Hahn says:

I would bring back Thomas and Pouha
