It is never too early to start looking at the draft. With the Senior Bowl practice in full gear, I’ve been searching the internet to discover who the Jets are taking in interest in.
According to Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com, the Jets really like Arizona State Wide Receiver Gerell Robinson. At 6-4, 220, Robinson is everything Jets fans have been asking for. A young, physical, athletic, tall, wide receiver. Robinson is tall, physical, with above average hands. His speed is average and he’s come on the scene just this year. While he’s slated to be a 5th round pick, Campbell states that he’s been very impressive during this week’s practice, so I assume his stock will rise.
Scott Wright and Shane P. Hallam of DraftCountDown.com, have reported that the Jets have also been linked to Penn State CB D’Anton Lynn. Lynn is the son of Jets RB coach Anthony Lynn, so this could have been just an informal meeting between the two parties. Regardless, Lynn is projected to be 7th round pick. At 6’0, and 205 pounds, I can definitely see the Jets taking him in the last round or signing him as an undrafted free agent as a nice gesture to an important part of the team (see Mark Sanchez BFF Scotty McKnight drafted last year in the 7th round or 2010 UDFA Donovan Warren who is the godson of current DL coach Mark Carrier).
Right after I tweeted about these two guys last night, the amazing folks at GangGreenNation put together a scouting report on both of them. To read the report and their thoughts click here: GangGreenNation Scouting Report

The Jets may have up to 4 Comp picks, which will be at the end of the Sixth and Seventh Round. Jet Scouts are working overtime on late round picks
-
-
This is all gamesmanship by the teams. No team will ever reveal who they are really interested in.
-
I would hope that they are done using draft picks as favors to employees.
-
Assuming this is serious, this guy is S L O W–just what they need. Another receiver who can’t achieve separation. Take a look at Marvin McNutt instead, who might go even later than this guy. Great hands, good size, better speed, plus not a diva. A TEAM player with a sense of perspective. Like him a lot.
-
Braylon ran the 40 time generally in the low 4.5′s, he rarely ran the 4.45 time he was timed with at the combine.
Robinson is maybe a few hundredths of a second slower, so if he’s too slow for the NFL then so is Braylon.

leave it up to fatso and he will draft another cb in the first round, smh, someone in baltimore said all rex want is cb’s
-
You really need some material, dude.
Do you think drafting a 3rd CB in the first round is a waste? Because many teams have done it (including the Saints the year they won the Super Bowl).
There’s no way you actually expect Rex to draft a CB, is there?
-
He cant draft another corner, if he does that were not getting any better and he should be fired. Why draft someone to the position you have the most depth. The 1st rd pick must be a ot,safety, olb, or wr. I’m discusted that the giants are in another super bowl before we got there. The jets have to make the right moves this offseason and replace hunter, Smith, Leonard, and get a receiver and pass rusher. These things have to be addressed if not no Superbowl but like we see right now playoffs are a crap shoot. The best teams don’t usually get there and like this wkend showed the 2 teams that played the better games didn’t even win the games.
-
Yeah I in no way want a CB drafted in the first couple of rounds, but rounds 5-7 are a joke. A CB taken that late could be getting picked for STs as much (and probably more) than they are for defense.
-
Brendan:
“Yeah I in no way want a CB drafted in the first couple of rounds..”
You mean like Wilson with the #1 Pick!!!
Another thing referring to your” Ryan Starts with the D line first” comment:
FYI let me remind you that six out of seven Ryans’ picks were OFENSIVE players and with the Jets #1 Pick he used it to get a DB!!!
-
Hank. Just stop it. You’re looking foolish at this point.
I said, for the third time now, that Rex’s defense starts from the inside out FOR THE FRONT SEVEN. That means linebackers and D-line. It means everyone on the defense EXCEPT DB’s.
But, since you refuse to read my entire posts and just want to cherry pick out-of-context quotes…
Wilson was a #1 pick, yes. Last year. Which is why I don’t want them to spend one on a CB THIS year. Last year? Perfectly acceptable, given that offenses are routinely using 3-WR sets as their “base” sets.
Oh, and Ryan spent this year’s #1 pick (basically the exact same pick as 2010′s) on a D-lineman.
Please just stop this nonsense.
-
Brendan:
I’M looking foolish????? Then explain this to my answer that Rex used his #1 pick on a DB:
“I said,………that Rex’s defense starts from the inside out FOR THE FRONT SEVEN. That means linebackers and D-line. It means everyone on the defense EXCEPT DB’s.”
It starts with the front seven EXCEPT the DB’s…drafting OFFENSE in his first six out of seven picks????
And I’m looking foolish???
Know what? forget explaining, it’s not going to work any way with you!!!!

Why is it OK to call him “fatso”? Seriously, stop.

Agreed, it seems like the only thing left that is still socailly acceptable to make fun of anymore is someones weight.

40 times and game speed are usually different, it’s what makes it so difficult to really judge whether a receiver is quick off the line or not. We all want to see receivers with 4.3-4.4 times…i didn’t see many if any above 5’9″ in this draft. So even the receivers that guys have been writing about the last few weeks, they seemingly are all in the 4.5-4.6′s.
As for Lynn, too slow too be a starting corner? Would they project him as a safety and take a chance on him late?
-
I’m saying, just looking at his highlight reel against Boise St, that he looks slow, and never achieves real separation. Fully in agreement that numbers don’t always tell the full story but my opinion is that McNutt will be far superior NFL player. GREAT hands, good run after catch, shifty, and most important not a me-first guy.
-
That’s fair. I haven’t really delved into the WR prospects in the draft, to be honest. McNutt does appear to be a better player at first glance, but he also seems to be a little higher in terms of projected draft round. Definitely worth keeping an eye on, though.

Guys unless Trent richardson is avail when they draft all I want to hear about is a DE that can rush the passer or a Safety that can cover TE’s.
-
This is a pretty bad draft for safeties. An OLB who can rush and cover is the highest on my list. Sign the S in free agency.
-
-
Also Free agents come into play before the draft no?
-
I convince that a lot of fans do not know the difference between a 3-4 DE and a 4-3 DE.
-
Oh just about 80 lbs outta do it.
-
They dont, I sometimes get lost when it comes to other teams. Guys don’t understand that UpShaw = Suggs.
I’m good at picking stars but I was fooled with Gholston . Still think UpShaw is our guy.
-
Upshaw =/= Suggs
Suggs is taller, longer, and bigger. Upshaw is shorter and stouter. And Suggs in college was wayyyyyyyyyyy better than Upshaw was. Suggs was ridiculous, didn’t have like 23 sacks in a single season?
Suggs is closer to Mercilus than Upshaw, and that’s not because I like Mercilus better.
Mercilus is almost the same size as Suggs coming out of school, was super-disruptive in a “lesser” conference than the SEC, and is likely to measure up very similar at the combine (based on the predicted times for Mercilus).
I won’t be upset with Upshaw, I’m sure he’ll be a good player, I just think Mercilus has that rare potential to be an elite pass rusher.
-
-
-
As to the WR’s this seems to be a pretty good draft to get one.
I would still attack WR through free agency and draft one in the middle rounds.
BJ Cunningham, Tommy Streeter, McNutt etc are solid mid round guys that can develop behind a veteran #2 WR.
-
McNutt is a sleeper. He’s gonna be real good. I’d take him in the 3rd.
-
-
Whos your pick for OLB Drew? You always seem to keep up on the draft?
-
There are a few guys that possess a little different skills.
Ingram and Upshaw are similar to Lamar Woodley. Short, powerful compact edge guys that can become good pash rushers
Whitney Mercilus can easily convert to 3-4 OLB and probably has the most ready pass rush skills and upside but has to transistion from DE with little drop skills.
A name people like but I’m scare of is Nick Perry from USC. He shows little explosion and I would be nervous taking him.
Outside shot look for Bruce Irvin to make some OLB combine noise.
-
We absolutely need a WR in the Braylon Edwards/Randy Moss/pre-crisis Plax mold. Since Robinson is in that mold, we should absolutely be scouting him. Especially if we can get him in a late round.
But another CB? The Jets have a better pair of CBs in Cromartie and Wilson than about 2/3rds of the league. Of course, that’s before you include the biggest star on the entire team.
In the defensive backfield, we should be scouting Safeties. We need to pick up at least two between the draft, Free Agency, and resigning Leonard.
-
Marshall’s Vinny Curry and Virginia’s Cam Johnson will be around in round 2 if the #Jets go OL, S etc in round one. Both are good strong prospects IMO
-
Not that it matters, but I agree with everything Drew just posted about the pass rushers.
The one thing I would say is that Rex doesn’t use his WILL to cover very often (they’re essentially a DE), so Mercilus’ lack of experience dropping into coverage wouldn’t be too detrimental. Rex would likely just let him lineup and get after the QB (as he would probably do with any of these guys).
-
I just saw one Mock draft had the Jets taking Ronnell Lewis but couldnt find much about him. Whatcha think?
-
He hits like a beast, can rush the passer, & play STs. Doesn’t have the resume of some of the other guys @ 16 but would be a nice pick if we traded back.
-
-
-
Brendan
Agreed…His lack of playing in space wouldn’t hinder me from taking Mercilus at all. I think if people saw him on the stage that they saw Upshaw on they would be impressed.
-
Levi
Lewis is a good player. I assume they didnt have the Jets taking him in round 1 though right?
I know Lewis didn’t rush the passer a lot Oklahoma. I think he only had a handful of sacks but he can def play 3-4 edge backer here.
-
It did have him at 16 and I never heard of him so I thought it strange. I admit I dont watch much college ball.

After draft day T. Y. Hilton will stand for: Thank You Hilton. Seriously ppl get on the bandwagon.

also they r looking at former lsu dt akiem hicks
-
Can we not draft a WR until round 3 the earliest?
IMO there are a lot more pressing needs.
Lets get a stud pass rusher PLEASE -
I would love to have pead I’m from Ohio so I always enjoyed watching him but I want Lamichael James more
-
Robinson developed VERY slowly at ASU. Seems mechanical to me. I don’t think he’d make the practice squad. Wasted pick-even a 5th.
-
Hey if Jets can get some Comp picks then I’m good with those players. I kinda like WR Gerell Robinson. I don’t think Plaxico Burries will be back I’m hoping they bring back Braylon Edwards. You never know what going to happened in the drafts Jets could end up taking WR, Michael Floyd who I think IF Safely Mark Barron or RB, Trent Richardson are gone. I also like WR, Nick Toon in the 3rd Rd, Others Safety I like are Kenny Tate and FS, Tramain Thomas.
-
I think TY is too short for chez.
I can’t tell if Mercillus is Vern.-
He’s one inch shorter then Holmes and could possibly have a top-3 40yd dash time at the combine.
If you watch the highlight film you’d see how explosive this kid is.-
i did watch and I immediately thought ” if tone was young and hungry he’d be TY”. I just think Chez needs a big strong fast dude that will outjump 90% of dbs.
-
I know what you mean, of course to get the prototypical WR you speak of means either spending big $$$ in FA or drafting a WR in the first round.
I have faith that Sanchez can re-learn the deep ball and this kid could help. Size is great but if you can get a WR that can get seperation (which I admit remains to be seen) and can get behind the defense in about 2 secs, you have to draft him.
Truthfully I don’t know why this kid is projected 3-4. If Al Davis was alive, this kid would be a first-round pick haha.

I think T.Y. is perfect replacement for Stupidio Holmes. Big target nice, but moves, hands, speed, Cruz-ness more important. Go get him.
-
I don’t believe Holmes is going anywhere, so I think TY could be his best friend by blowing the top off the defense.
-
Uh, a mid-to-late round rookie sleeper draft pick is not going to replace Holmes.
Down the road, maybe, if he pans out.
-
-
Good thread. This is what blogging is supposed to be about. Really solid info. Thanks, fellas!
-
How the Jets draft will be determined on one thing and one thing only. Who they sign in FA. If they sign say Texas’s Mario Williams, than don’t expect them to draft a pass rusher. If they sign an OL likewise don’t look for them to draft one early on etc.
-
hay hi im back its me tariq the jets need more speed dbs de qb they need to more points alot.
-
i hope they draft good no bust guys speed s=fast guys bring back airon maybin he fast.i saw the 2012 season games they will have they hands full

Ah yes, the Jets are scouting who they can draft in the 5th to 7th round. RIGHT!!! They are going to waist a pick gratuitously to appease one of their coaches, and pass on a player who could help them in the latter rounds. Now that is sound draft preparation!!! Forget the fact that maybe 20-50 1st through 3rd rounders are there. No the Jets are interested in the leftovers. Can anyone say SMOKESCREEN?
