Dunbar To Be Hired as Defensive Line Coach

Dunbar during his tenure at LSU

The New York Daily News is reporting that, barring any setbacks, former Vikings coach Karl Dunbar will accept the Jets’ offer to become the defensive line coach, he will replace Mark Carrier.

Barring an eleventh-hour change of heart, it is believed that Dunbar, who spent six seasons as the defensive line coach for the Vikings before he was fired earlier this month, will accept the offer. The Jets targeted Dunbar shortly after he and the Vikings parted ways, bringing him to the team facility in Florham Park, New Jersey, for an interview two weeks ago.

In spite of the Vikings’ woes, Dunbar built one of the stoutest defensive lines with help from the famous Williams Wall and Jared Allen. Though Carrier has done relatively well working with the likes of Pouha, DeVito and Wilkerson, Dunbar’s experience will be a valuable commodity for the Jets who are looking to put more pressure on the quarterback. Dunbar’s experience with the 4-3 scheme also opens up the possibility of the defense getting more looks from the set.

Carrier is likely to remain with the organization in a different capacity. Perhaps with the defensive backs given he spent his career as a safety with the Bears, Lions and Redskins.

Cap tip to JayM for the heads up.

Sounds like a decent hire if he knows the 3-4. But what is happening with the Sanchez mentor?

    • avatar boogie down says:

While I wish we had the QB coach in place so he could begin working with Sanchez, I don’t object to the organization taking its time, assuming it’s doing so in order to get the best guy possible.

      Tom Clements? Please?

      • avatar bob says:

does the fact that they havent got a QB coach for sanchez yet mean that they will pursue manning till he gets signed by someone??

        • avatar Brendan says:

Matt Cavanaugh is still the team’s QB coach.

          • avatar Revis Christ says:

            No idea why.

          • avatar andy says:

you are still this web sites gadfly.

            • avatar Weeks says:

              Andy,

Please refrain from making personal attacks, you have now done this multiple times in the past week and quite frankly its not very constructive for anyone.

And for the record, there’s no need to patronize us.

              • avatar andy says:

A gadfly is a person who upsets the status quo by posing upsetting or novel questions, or just being an irritant. The term has been used to describe many politicians and social commentators.[citation needed]

The term “gadfly” (Ancient Greek: μύωψ, mýops[1]) was used by Plato in the Apology[2] to describe Socrates’ relationship of uncomfortable goad to the Athenian political scene, which he compared to a slow and dimwitted horse.

During his defense when on trial for his life, Socrates, according to Plato’s writings, pointed out that dissent, like the gadfly, was easy to swat, but the cost to society of silencing individuals who were irritating could be very high. “If you kill a man like me, you will injure yourselves more than you will injure me,” because his role was that of a gadfly, “to sting people and whip them into a fury, all in the service of truth.” This may have been one of the earliest descriptions of pragmatic ethics.[citation needed]

In modern and local politics, gadfly is a term used to describe someone who persistently challenges people in positions of power, the status quo or a popular position.[3] For example, Morris Kline wrote “There is a function for the gadfly who poses questions that many specialists would like to overlook. Polemics are healthy.”[4] Oxford University professor Bent Flyvbjerg has talked about “gadfly social science,” emphasizing a key role for social science in identifying and challenging the abuse of power, whoever the perpetrator and whoever the victim [5] The word may be uttered in a pejorative sense, while at the same time be accepted as a description of honourable work or civic duty.[6
This is a wikipedia definition of a word used, I could not imagine as a personal attack as much as a statement of fact. I have a target on my back here and really if you think thats just its your “perogative”.
If you read the definition it pretty much describes what Brendan does. This is a blog not a Harvard lecture hall. Lighten up.

                • avatar Weeks says:

Judging by your response it would appear as if it is a lecture. You can think of representations of everyone on this blog until the cows come home but please keep them to yourself. It’s to the point where you’re not even bothering to comment on content but rather the charcter of everyone else. That is not what this forum is for.

This is good news for the Wilkshake and Ellis.

  3. avatar mikebe1 says:

I hope he brings some beef to our d line with him

  4. avatar Damion says:

This is good! We talked about a new D-Line caoch last week and now here we go. We can play 3-4 and 4-3 I like it. Can we swing a Trade for Jared Allen now???

  5. avatar pat says:

Yo what the F is with dudes hands???

  6. avatar Damion says:

    *Coach

  7. avatar pat says:

This is a good move and all but in all honesty, fans are cruel. Now we are just another punchline for Pats and Giants fans. You don’t think people are gonna mock this guys skin disease?? Bad timing Jets, we got enough problems.

    • avatar Brendan says:

      Are you kidding me?

      • avatar Dawg1331 says:

Pat your a dope. If they get on your case about it say this. You ever see coughlins face in the winter. He looks like a burned victim. There’s your come back pat.

        • avatar andy says:

Weeks where are you now, here is a poster calling another a dope?

          • avatar Brendan says:

Andy, do you see the post he’s responding to? It’s pretty shallow and could very well be offensive to certain people. Is this what it’s come to, you policing the board as if you’re some pseudo-mod whistle-blower?

            Wanna talk about the Jets!?

            • avatar andy says:

              Benndan,
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The post he is responding to is of no matter. Dope is a name call, far worse then my gadfly remark to you. What is needed is a level playing field. I most assuradly will point this out if I am constantly characterized as one who makes “personal attacks” while others post far more offensive posts and are unrecognized.

              • avatar andy says:

BTW the skin ailent is called “lack of pigmentation” or rosatia (sp). Certainly it has no bearing on a mans toughness or ability to coach or lead. I would like to see who ever mentioned it say it to his face.

                • avatar Brendan says:

So, you agree with all of us calling that guy out, but still use this conversation to trumpet your pointless and tired “someone is attacking someone!!!! LOOK!!!” stuff? Why? You AGREE with the sentiment of the post.

FYI, the disease is not known as rosacea, but is instead known as vitiligo.

I’m not even going to respond to your post below, it makes literally zero sense and I can’t stop laughing at the hypocrisy of calling someone else a “petchulant child” while typing in all caps and essentially screaming over the internet because of a difference of opinions.

              • avatar Brendan says:

TJB commenters like to think they’re capable of regulating themselves in cases like this. The original post was out of line, shallow, and offensive.

You make an attack because someone disagrees with you, this (while a mild attack, at best) is because the comment in question is low-class.

Stop playing the victim, you’re not a hot woman so no one will give you any sympathy.

Now you’re just acting like a little kid who got his wrist slapped and is trying to get everyone else in trouble so he’s not the only one.

Dude, talk about the Jets, and stop turning TJB into some free-speech platform or something silly like that.

                • avatar andy says:

                  DUDE
                  I AM NOT A VICTOM!
                  FREEDOM OF SPEECH? SILLY?
                  SOMETHING TO JOKE ABOUT?
                  GROW UP YOU PETCHULENT CHILD!
PEOPLE ARE GIVING THEIR LIVES FOR IT EVERY DAY.

                  • avatar Weeks says:

Before you start breaking out the picket signs and lecturing us all on free speech, may I direct your attention to this post Bent made a few days ago:

“You know we delete personal attacks all the time. We can’t be here 24 hours a day so maybe we don’t catch everything immediately.

None of our staff is paid for this and we try and keep personal attacks to a minimum, which is particularly labor intensive and a total pain in the ass (especially when we have to field a bunch of complaints in the comments section of a post about a freaking offensive line coach). We show more tolerance than other sites. In the interests of free speech (which we are NOT constitutionally obliged to uphold) there are people still posting here who would already have been banned at most sites.

I would remind that baiting, gloating and inflammatory comments are also banned.

You don’t like it, ask for a refund.”

    • avatar CTforNYJets says:

So we shouldn’t hire the guy because you don’t want to hear other fans making fun of his skin disease? Assuming you are serious, you need to get some thicker skin, buddy. Making fun of such a thing would only prove the idiocy of the person in question.

  8. avatar Rich R. says:

Pat, for the sake of the human race, I hope you’re kidding.

  9. avatar Damion says:

the QB coach is gonna Be Peyton Manning…crazy but it just might work similar to how the jets hired Parcells as consultant back in ’97. If peyton still isnt ready to play and the jets arent ready to part with sanchez why not??? If snachez is stinking up the joint and the jets have a sub par recored it would be intresting to say the least. Jets should try to land Manning one where or the other just to keep in away from the fish and cards, who are both on the 2012 schedule. just might be crazy enough to work

    • avatar __fense says:

This is the only Manning-to-Jets scenario that wouldn’t instantly be a bad idea. I’m not sure how good he would be as a coach, but it could work out.

      • avatar mike francesser says:

Not sure how much of a teacher he is given Painter’s awfulness. Yeah. That’s right I said, “awfulness”.

  10. avatar Longshot says:

Pat, I am going to hope that your comment is nowhere near the word “serious.”

  11. avatar Damion says:

    peyton manning
    quaterback coach/ passing game coordinator

  12. avatar Jet says:

Lets forget about dunbars condition for a moment…how can we play 4-3 if we dont have the right personnel? We need speedy guys off the edge..you we can make a run at allen?

  13. avatar Damion says:

WE don’t have the personnel for the 4-3 you say???

Pouha and DEvito at the tackles wilkerson at one end we can find the other and a OLB in free agency and the draft? Rex says it all the time “we have to be multiple and from the sound of it he’s cleaning house.

Already we have 3 new offensive coaches and Dunbar so its on!

  14. avatar Damion says:

Jared Allen would cost the 16th pick 3rd 76 overall and next yrs 1st…IF you ask me thats a no brainer no questions asked done deal! Lets Go

  15. avatar jetsetradio says:

Maybe he will bring in tommie harris he coached him his rookie year with the bears I think he would be a nice addition to our d line

  16. avatar Docdrodro says:

Can’t argue with that Vikes DL. btw, the 46 defense, you know that sing Rexs dad invented, is a 4 man front. One NT, two three techniques, one rush end.

  17. avatar Wolf says:

    SOLID HIRE.

  18. avatar TOON2388 says:

somehow some way, some media fool will write something about JETS staying in news blah blah blah and then fools who comment will say “won’t this team shut up….”

I find it amusing that the Media is already portraying Giants as “talkers”….anyone who plays NE is always the bad guy….these fools have so much credibility, same people that wrote Pats got steals with Albert and Ocho

  19. avatar mattm says:

Love this hire. Carrier isn’t a DL coach. He is one of Rex’s guys who he brought in figuring Thurman could be hired away as a DC, and Carrier could step in with the DBs. It was also protection for Pettine being recruited for a HC position-so Thurman would move to DC under that scenario-and Carrier could move to DBs.

Pretty smart move by Rex with the way the Jets defensive coaches were being viewed by the league and the Jets’ success the first two years. But it left him teaching not only the DL but the DL coach, and gave critics of Rex caring only about defense more fodder. as Massive said above-this is great news for Ellis-
    especially.

I think Carrier will now move to OLB coach to replace Weeks-who with almost no fanfare at all-was Rex’s punishment for losing the team this year. WoodBaum forced Rex to fire his best friend and college roommate. Very petty, and something they will have to pay for when Rex brings this team back.

  20. avatar WOJF says:

Good to see them bring an accomplished position coach in from outside the Parcells/Ryan coaching fraternity, can only be a positive.

  21. avatar JetsMets4ever says:

We need to rush the passer. Hopefully will fall into Upshaw in the draft. We”ll be fine stopping the run and think Ellis will improve. Resign Pouha (for the right price) and hope Westerman can take the next step. Maybin should be back and hopefully will beef up a liitle. I think our defensive line will be dominant next year with a few adjustments
